Who Were We Running From? (2023) s01e05 Episode Script

Episode 5

[mother] Okay. We're just gonna go in,
withdraw our money, and stay calm.
Let's get this over with.
[Bambi] Yeah.
[tense music playing]
Hi there, good morning.
- [man] We'll be done once I sign, right?
- [clerk] Thank you, you're all set. Okay?
Do you see that nice lady in the glasses
way down on the end?
Yeah, good eye. She's perfect, Mom.
Okay.
[man] Thanks, have a good one!
[clerk] Good morning.
And how may I help you ladies today?
Please, have a seat.
Uh [mother clears throat]
Do you I talked with someone yesterday.
Uh, I'd like to completely withdraw
from my checking account.
- [clerk] All of it?
- Mm-hmm.
[clerk] All right, let's check it out.
Oh, that's a huge amount to withdraw.
I'll have to ask my colleague
if your money's here.
[tense music continuing]
[audio grows distorted]
[keyboard clacks echoing]
It looks like we've got it.
Are you positive
you want to withdraw all of it?
I am, yeah.
All right. I'll have it prepared.
I'll complete your transaction.
Would you ladies see our manager?
Why's that?
Uh, well, you have papers to sign.
With your manager?
Yeah. It actually says
she's interested in meeting with you.
[music swells]
Let's go sign those papers. Come on, baby.
BRANCH MANAGER
[manager, faintly] Oh, I know, right?
[laughing]
And then this man says,
"I'll talk if he calls me!"
No, but seriously,
you gotta check this place out!
Really, you should reconsider
and come out with us tonight!
If you're paying for me, then I'm in.
- [woman 1] Wow!
- You believe her? [woman 2 laughs]
Pardon.
How can I help you today?
I don't wanna intrude.
We can just wait there
while you finish this chitchat.
You can get around
to dealing with us whenever you like it.
Listen, we want our money, that's all.
They said we have to see you.
Ah, that's why you're here?
I specifically wanted to meet you!
Why's that?
I was curious because I wanted to know
who would withdraw
so much money before it matured.
Do we look the part?
Pardon? I don't follow.
You're inventing procedures
to satisfy your curiosity? Is that right?
No, that's not it, ma'am. It's just
I wonder why you'd risk losing interest.
It's probably best to let it grow.
- It'd be a pity.
- I don't think so, ma'am.
You just want the money
to stay here in your bank.
And I shouldn't
have to deal with your attitude.
Just give me what you want me to sign,
and you and your sorority sisters
can return to being real parasites.
Uh
- We should get going.
- Sure. I'll call you in a bit, huh? Okay?
- Yeah, okay then.
- See you. Okay.
Just so you're aware,
in order for you to withdraw your money,
it needs to be cleared with me.
[suspenseful music playing]
Listen, lady.
I'm just curious, you know.
As a parasite, do you thrive greatly
on sucking the life out of others?
Hmm?
Let's go, Bambi.
We'll take out our money
from another branch.
Listen, miss, wait a sec!
Come back, lady,
and we'll give you your money!
Look, it's your money,
and you can withdraw it if you want to.
Please, you've got me all wrong.
All right?
- Fine then.
- Guys, bring the papers and money at once.
Let's not keep them.
Why don't you come in my office
for some coffee now?
No, thanks. Just my money.
Come on. We'll bring you
the papers and money.
Just have a seat, please. Go ahead.
I'll take a little more of your time
and be right back.
Get the police, it's the mother
and daughter from those hotels.
- I'm sorry, ma'am?
- Get me the police!
It's the mother who's that Snipper lady.
[music intensifies]
I'm gonna need you to lock the door.
It's an emergency.
Stay cool.
WHO WERE WE RUNNING FROM?
The mother and daughter are at the bank.
Yes, sir, text me the location
and we're there.
Got it, sir, got it, yeah.
Step on it.
[laughs] We got 'em cornered now!
[siren wailing]
[suspenseful music plays]
- So, where are the cops?
- They should be arriving here shortly.
Great.
Just a sec!
Can you open the door please?
Hey, sir, please let me in.
[Bambi knocking on door]
Can't you hear me? Open it!
Hey, please let me in!
My mother is in there.
Hey, open up! My mom's inside.
- The cops haven't shown up yet.
- I can't keep her waiting.
I'll just have to stall her.
Well, just be careful.
Well, here's all of your money.
[sirens wailing in distance]
[music intensifies]
[guard knocking]
[guard] Ma'am? Are you all right in there?
[guard continues knocking] Ma'am?
Open the door, now!
What's going on?
[guard knocking]
She's up to something.
She's up to something in there.
Hey! Open the door!
[sirens wailing]
Secure the perimeter!
[banging on doorknob continues]
[clerk screams]
- [officer 1] Let us in, guys.
- [officer 2] Right here.
Hey, Bambi.
Mom!
My baby. Let's get to our island.
Yes, please.
Our boat leaves in 15 minutes.
We'll make it. It's close.
We'll go this way.
Quick, but don't run.
Yes, Mom.
[siren blares]
AMBULANCE
[tense music playing]
[Bambi] We're out of the woods.
There's no one around, Mom.
[mother] We did it, baby.
- You see that pier over there?
- Uh-huh.
They've got our boat to the island.
Hey!
- Stop right there! Stop running!
- Go! Hurry!
- [Bambi] Mommy!
- [mother] Run!
What's going on?
[mother] Wait. Stay calm and stay close.
[mother] Excuse us!
[music intensifies]
Run now, baby!
[music trails off]
[man on radio] We're in pursuit
of the suspects. We're onto them.
Looks like they're trying
to get downtown from the pier.
[man 2 on radio]
Copy that. We're in pursuit.
[officer] This is the police! Freeze!
I said freeze!
[mother] Run!
[officer] Stop! Stop right there!
Bambi, why don't we show them
what great swimmers you and I are?
- Let's show 'em.
- [officer 2] Freeze!
- Great idea!
- [officer 2] Don't move!
[music intensifies]
[officer 1] Move, move, go!
[overlapping chatter]
- [Bambi] Can I have a water, please?
- No problem.
Thank you.
[Bambi] We're on our island.
But we barely made it to our boat.
I hike up this hill every day now
and look at those daisy fields
we left across the water.
It was supposed to be a sweet memory.
I wish we could have signed
those papers without any trouble.
I really wish
we'd never met that bank manager.
In an alternate universe,
Bambi and his mother might be
watching the daisy fields peacefully.
But we're not them.
We're the alternate version,
where everything
that could get screwed up, did.
Absolutely, of course
I can go ahead and give you her name.
I'm ashamed to admit it,
but I happen to be related to that woman.
If I recall correctly,
when you came to the hotel
I gave her name to you.
That's what I heard.
If you don't mind,
is there any other information?
Go ahead, ask your questions.
I'll give you anything you need
on that unholy woman.
Along with the disgusting acts
she went and committed.
[Turkish pop song playing]
[song continues faintly over earphones]
[Bambi] Good morning, Mom!
It's so beautiful outside.
Good morning.
Would you like me to run you a hot bath?
Then we'll have breakfast
together downstairs.
I would rather stay in.
Mom? You haven't taken a shower for days.
You haven't left the room.
How long are you going to be feeling down?
I'm not just feeling down.
It feels like I've hit rock bottom.
It's worse this time around.
If I take a shower, or brush my teeth,
or comb my hair, even,
I'd be caring for myself again.
I might even accidentally feel better.
- That would be amazing!
- I should just feel miserable.
Miserable and defeated for what I did.
Babe, I screwed up, royally.
Because you were reckless, right?
Mm-hmm.
You were hasty in selling
whatever was left from your mother.
You're right. And because of me,
we're penniless and broke.
Look.
This is all we have left.
And it shrinks every day.
[Bambi] That really is
all that's left of our money.
As soon as we got to the island,
we sold my mother's ring
from her grandmother.
All right, baby, honey,
the ring has to go.
Here you go.
Are you kidding?
Is that all?
What'd you expect?
That's all this is worth.
I mean
Let's go, baby.
No land to sell,
and our bank account's almost empty.
And I haven't worked a day, babe.
So what'll happen to us?
How can we live here
if we can't make a living?
[Bambi] You feeling
close to hitting rock bottom
scares the hell out of me, Mother.
Do you know what I think, hmm?
I'm listening.
I think I could push myself
to go as deep as possible,
like a diver who's testing the limits.
But I'm talking really deep.
Yeah?
And I'd still be able
to get back up to the surface.
Assuming I can get back up,
with without a problem.
So we have to be extremely prepared.
I need you to leave me alone now.
No, don't ask me to do that.
This is all your fault, Ice Queen.
You can't live off your savings.
You can't sell anything.
How are you gonna eat?
[suspenseful music playing]
I'm not even sure
if my mother's actually dead.
Or
Or did I just make that up
so that I could make it through?
She's having me tailed, I bet.
That way she can show up
just when I thought
I was at last free of her.
All so she can terrorize me
in that moment.
Then I realize, that doesn't work.
All of that inheritance money?
If she was alive, we wouldn't have it.
And we couldn't have sold
all her stuff either.
We should get some sleep.
Mm-hmm.
All right, let's sleep then.
- [steady tapping]
- [foreboding music playing]
[shoe tapping steadily]
[woman] She won't even hold that baby.
I'll make it disappear soon as it's born.
I will if have to.
And her too, if she resists.
- I'll make 'em both disappear.
- [man] Absolutely not, that's way too far.
Are you kidding?
She's a disgrace.
Look what she's done to us.
Okay, well, you're right about her kid.
I mean, it's not one of us anyway.
But she's ours.
I won't give up my daughter.
[foreboding music playing]
[door creaks open]
[door opens]
[door closes]
[tense, dramatic music playing]
[delicate music box tune playing]
[tense music builds]
[music intensifies]
[ominous music swells]
[delicate tune playing]
[ominous music continuing]
[music box tune continuing]
[brakes screeching]
[car crashing]
[relative] At the funeral, everyone had
the same question on their minds.
How is it possible that the brakes
could fail on a luxury car?
Especially one so well-maintained.
Hmm. It seemed quite obvious to them.
That woman's what happened.
She was even seen
entering the garage the night before.
But at that time, no one suspected
she was going in to attempt murder.
[suspenseful music playing]
[bird caws loudly]
[cawing continues]
You? It can't be you.
I tricked you. I was hiding.
I faked my death.
Just so I could punish you.
Won't you forgive me now, Mother?
Could you love me for just one day?
You can't even care for me
like that mother crow.
You'll be punished soon.
Very soon.
But you already punished me.
You punished me enough!
Mother, you already punished me!
[crows cawing distressingly]
[Bambi] Mom?
You all right?
Did something happen?
You can tell me, Mom.
We could go on a walk?
Fresh air would be nice.
[somber music playing]
[Bambi] This feels good, doesn't it?
[Bambi] It terrified me
to see you like that.
You were talking to yourself.
[mother] I thought I saw my mother.
I thought she was in the room.
It was really just in my head.
I get that the feeling
of hitting rock bottom is
a lot worse than feeling down.
You're right about that, baby.
But you know if we don't destroy it first,
it will destroy us, right?
It will surely.
You have to do something now.
You have to get us out of this.
- Bambi, the place.
- Otherwise we're headed for trouble.
Bambi, I'm telling you!
The Ice Queen had land like this
she never sold,
something I completely forgot about!
Are you serious, Mom?
I am! This place was a reminder.
- It's super similar!
- And where is the property?
It's a place that's made up
entirely of vacation homes.
Acres and acres!
Is it worth a lot?
Let's just put it this way.
For the next few years,
we don't worry about money!
See, Mother? You're so incredible!
You saved us again. We're okay!
We'll sell that land, Bambi,
and cross the shore to Türkiye.
The police are looking everywhere though.
We've been here for two months.
I'm sure they forgot.
I don't think so, Mom.
[shuddering breath]
Try listening to your gut.
Your gut is something I trust always.
It says it's dangerous.
It doesn't want us to do it.
Tell me, do we really have any choice?
[dramatic music playing]
[Bambi] We rushed back to our room.
Then we started making calls
to every realtor in the area.
Yes, I'm talking about
that place by those steep rocks.
[realtor] Yeah, I know the place.
That's a pretty nice plot of land.
And we're trying to sell that nice land
as quickly as we can.
Can you find a buyer?
- How quickly are we talking?
- As fast as you can.
Sure, we could, but it's not gonna be easy
finding a buyer so rapidly.
I'll call you when I have a decent buyer.
Tell you what, ma'am,
give me your number and I'll call you.
[tense music playing]
[Bambi] My mother was
on the phone until it got late.
Everyone wanted to dismiss us
as soon as they heard the word "quickly."
[phone ringing]
Hello.
[operator] Hello, I'm connecting
the number you wanted me to call.
Please hold the line.
[phone ringing]
- Hello?
- [mother] Hello.
I'm calling again
about the property by the rocks.
Ah, miss, where have you been?
You didn't leave a number,
so I couldn't call you back,
and I have a buyer.
- Oh yeah? Really?
- Yeah, really!
I have power of attorney from the buyer,
so I can handle everything.
You don't need to deal with anyone else.
The buyer wants to put villas there.
No problem. I'll be in soon
to close the deal then.
Yes, ma'am. Sounds good. Come on in!
I can't wait to meet with you.
Do you hear that, Bambi?
Türkiye awaits us.
[intense music builds]
[relative] Her mother?
Well, she was
the epitome of a classy lady.
She fully embraced the concept
of keeping everything,
and I mean everything,
in the family.
- [woman] Welcome.
- Thank you.
Right this way.
Her father was a distinguished gentleman.
Really tall and good-looking.
Like an Adonis!
But, naturally, at the funeral he was
nothing like that charming man we knew.
He'd changed.
Hang on a minute.
Wasn't he killed in the accident?
[relative] What are you talking about?
Only the mother and chauffeur died.
- This way.
- Thank you.
Hello there!
Sir, congratulations. I'm happy to say
the land you're buying is quite valuable.
Plus, I arranged everything.
I talked to the lady selling it.
She's on her way.
[dramatic music building]
We'll see about that.
[dramatic music continuing]
[dark, intense outro music playing]
