Who Were We Running From? (2023) s01e07 Episode Script

Episode 7

[suspenseful music playing]
[interviewer] If you're ready,
I'll start recording.
POLICE
All right, we're rolling.
This, uh, is our police-issued
submachine gun.
It usually shoots nine millimeter
parabellum-style rounds.
Magazine holds 30 rounds.
The initial velocity is
1,300 feet per second.
A shot from 160 feet
could pierce its way through
a board at least four inches thick.
[gunshots]
I'm gonna level with you here.
Doesn't matter how tough of a man you are.
With this bullet,
you're never coming back.
Now imagine
the damage it could do
if a lady or a little girl is the target.
[music swells]
WHO WERE WE RUNNING FROM?
[mother] Each person has
their own book of prayers, Bambi.
Everyone does.
[Bambi] Well, ours would have to be Bambi.
[mother] That's right.
Don't we find everything
we're looking for in its pages?
It always gives us signs.
It's like our personal
danger alarm, right?
I bet it could show us
our destiny if we wanted it to.
I know it could!
We're able to see anything
if we look carefully, right?
That's right!
You know, most people think
the mother dying is the end of the story.
But that's the middle of the story.
I guess that's just the ending they want.
It's not right. It's the middle
when his mother is killed.
He grows up
after he's been left all alone.
And then he builds
a new life in the forest.
He grows older.
And falls in love.
And he's full of joy.
He grows older.
And falls in love.
And he's full of joy.
A shooting star! Did you see, Mother?
No. I missed it, Bambi.
I missed it.
[gentle music playing]
Come here.
[uneasy music playing]
Let's go, Bambi.
[Bambi] This is a very crowded place.
Packed with people. Too many people.
At the beach,
they're stacked on top of each other.
- On the streets, too.
- [mother] Check out that store.
And there's nothing but jewelry
and rug stores on these streets.
My mother takes me in and out of
this particular shop constantly.
These are so gorgeous, Mom.
I love them.
[vendor] That's an original Hereke,
woven from the finest silk, ma'am.
- [Bambi] Are these all silk, too?
- Yes, those are silk as well.
[Bambi] Absolutely beautiful.
Let's go baby. Now.
- Uh, have a good day.
- You too, thanks!
[tense music building]
Doesn't this dress look nice?
Absolutely, it does.
Try this one on.
How great are these colors?
- Mother?
- Hmm?
Why am I trying these on?
We don't have any money.
Try it, and we'll come back when we do.
[foreboding music plays]
[foreboding music continues]
ALTUN HOSTEL
A/C, SATELLITE TV, WIRELESS
[Bambi] We're staying at a hostel
with a lot of young tourists.
We went with cheap and off-the-grid.
We eat street food now.
My mom is always busy writing things down
and drawing in her notebook.
[door opens]
I didn't get you your own,
but are you sure you don't want any?
We can share.
No, you just enjoy it, baby.
Maybe we'll dye your hair
a different color some other day.
You used to say
you liked the color of my hair.
You don't anymore?
Your beauty gets a ton of attention, baby.
Because even in the largest crowd,
you immediately stand out.
Is that the reason
you don't braid my hair anymore?
Just a single bun
or a double bun or a ponytail.
You used to do such pretty things.
I need to make sure you're safe, Bambi.
I have to get you a lot of money somehow,
and I need to give you
as much room as I can.
[Bambi] These aren't
just any old words, Mommy.
They're words from the middle of the book.
And what does that mean exactly, Mom?
How are you gonna make room?
You're the best thing I've ever created.
The only good thing.
I've lived just for you.
And I'm glad.
I'll have to call you back. Okay, later.
Look, you're off
the mother-and-daughter case.
They think it's above your pay grade.
- And you're taking too long.
- Who's the case been assigned to, sir?
You know that cocky captain
you went on that hotel raid with?
That guy.
Sir, wait a minute.
I'm telling you, if that guy finds them,
they're dead for sure.
I see. That's what they want, right?
I don't get why anyone wears jewelry.
The ice queen did not go
a single day without wearing any.
[dance music playing faintly
over car stereo]
And why do they drive
these expensive cars?
Why do they want to be in crowded areas?
Well, that's what they are.
Pinned-on souls and evil crowds.
Right now we need those evil crowds, baby.
They can help us blend in
and become invisible.
Come with me.
How come you're rushing?
Where are we going?
Over there.
Oh, I just love this thing! I'm buying it.
Mommy, are you all right?
This is really out of character.
The color and the scarf alone,
it's not you.
At this point, our list has been
reduced to three stores, baby.
Mmm, okay. Let me guess which.
- All right.
- Um
The little jewelry place,
the big jewelry place,
and the rug store.
Great job, baby.
But I don't want
to deal with the jewelers.
It could end up costing more
in the long run.
Just tell me, okay? Which one?
Over there.
[foreboding music plays]
So, when are we gonna do it?
Like tomorrow?
We do have a hard day tomorrow, bay.
And we know that better days will follow.
[tense music playing]
I want all of you to take a good look.
You should know full well
exactly who we're dealing with.
Let's see those photos.
[interviewee] Our captain
wasn't taking any crap.
He was determined, fixated on it.
And he was obsessed with the mother.
This whole thing
Well, it's
it's left a void inside of me.
If you'd just heard about it,
it would sound insane.
I don't know. I mean
It screwed with me.
[interviewer] Um, we can take five,
if you need a quick break.
ALTUN HOSTEL
[mother] You don't need
to know everything, Bambi.
I never wanted you to know
about the dark times.
I tried so hard to hide it.
I know, Mommy.
You were always protecting me.
With your on-off switches.
[mother chuckles]
"Hit your delete button, babe.
Bambi, forget about it, baby."
[laughs] Sounds just like me!
Watch this. Ready?
[imitating mother] Bambi,
stop asking me all these hard questions.
Seriously, babe, you're killing me!
[gasps, laughs]
I understand everything now, Mother.
Together, we're a team.
You know that night
in New York in the snow storm?
Mm-hmm.
[gentle music playing]
I just
I just wish you were still
that little girl
with the cold, red cheeks.
I do, too.
I think we should get ready.
I'm parched.
Will you get me some water downstairs?
Sure, let me just get ready.
[foreboding music playing]
- Hey, who's that?
- 207. They checked in while you were off.
- I updated the list for you.
- Thank you.
- These are all good, right?
- Mm-hmm.
I got the water.
So you're all ready?
And don't leave the room
until I get back here.
But I don't get it.
I thought we were going together.
No, I want you to stay in the room
and get our stuff packed up.
Hey, no, Mother. We are the moon unit.
- We have to stay together.
- Oh, no, baby.
Your hands need to stay clean.
You know I'm stronger now.
Yes, you are,
and it's only because I never let
the bad memories stay with you.
Because I never wanted for you
to turn out like I did, Bambi.
- No, wait, just
- Bambi, just hush!
Now, you're a happy girl.
And you're my daughter. You hear me, babe?
But I'm like my mother.
Because my childhood
was the opposite of yours.
And we can never be compared.
Our lives were built on
rules that can't be broken.
I won't let it fly, babe.
So you have to stay right here.
Okay, Bambi?
Yeah, Mom. I'm sorry.
Come here.
Do you want to do something to help us?
Yeah, I would love that, Mom.
Bambi's our prayer book, remember?
Yes.
- And you remember it all?
- Yes, of course.
Then you start praying.
And you pray for us both.
[suspenseful music playing]
Don't leave me alone in the forest, Mommy.
Baby, you really believe
I'm as dumb as his mother?
"Bambi was often left alone."
"His mother would disappear,
and though he cried out for her,
she didn't come."
"The sky was already dimming
and turning a pale grey."
"The forest was beginning to grow dark."
"Suddenly, his mother
sprang out from the bushes."
"She screamed in pain."
"Someone was after her."
"Bambi thought she was playing at first,
and then suddenly it occurred to him that
that his mother was screaming in fear."
That's enough praying.
I can't do this.
[suspenseful music building]
[siren squawks]
[Bambi] Go to sleep, Bambi. Sleep now.
Sleep.
[suspenseful music intensifies]
Oh, there you are, beautiful gazelle.
[bell tolling]
[horns blaring]
Who are you? Who?
- Shh.
- Who are you?
- You're a freak.
- [phone ringing]
Do you take blood in your coffee?
[laugh echoing]
[music swells]
[music trails off]
Mommy?
[foreboding music playing]
Do you see? I didn't leave you
out there in the forest, did I?
You're not Bambi's mother.
You're my mommy.
Uh, Mom?
Here, let me wash your hands.
[Bambi] Poor Mother.
Now you're my baby.
You have money
and a bag full of valuables.
It's enough to sustain you for years.
Was it all really that horrible, Mom?
This is the first time
it wasn't for protection.
Because I did it all for money.
Just stay put.
[mother] It was horrible, Bambi.
- It was excruciating.
- Press delete, Mother.
Forget everything,
starting with the ice queen.
Let's start over, all right?
Erase all that.
No, baby.
You can forget, but I'll still remember.
My penance will be to remember.
It's time to leave.
- [groaning in pain]
- Mom?
[Bambi] What happened?
You're hurt. How did that happen?
It's just a deep cut, baby.
You should've said sooner!
Come on, lie down.
Careful.
Let's apply some pressure.
Soon you'll have to go on your own
and blossom,
because I got you
all the money that you need, Bambi.
If you're making room
by giving me yours, then I don't want it.
Look at all that money.
It's plenty for the both of us.
We just need to leave, Bambi.
But we can't leave yet
because we have to treat your wound
and stop all this bleeding.
- Look, we can't go to a hospital.
- I know that.
Leave it to me. I'll take care of it.
I'll be right back.
[foreboding music playing]
What's all this?
What's going on here?
[siren droning in distance]
PHARMACY
Good evening. Can I help you?
Uh, yes. I need some gauze.
Um, and some alcohol and iodine.
Uh, it's urgent. And some cotton balls.
[pharmacist] Is someone hurt?
And something for the pain.
Yeah, someone is hurt.
I can give you directions to the hospital.
Well, that would be helpful,
but I'm probably
just gonna dress the wound.
You're gonna go about a mile and a half
straight down this street.
You can't miss it.
Um, is this enough to cover it?
That's too much.
- Let me grab you some change.
- No, keep the change.
I'm here, Mommy, I'm back.
Look, I got it.
I got everything we need here, Mom.
- Are you all right?
- I am, baby.
[dialing]
[line ringing]
NATIONWIDE SEARCH FOR THE HOTEL KILLERS
It didn't hurt, did it?
No, I'm all right, baby.
For the pain. Here, take it.
Baby, what?
Baby, what's wrong?
The guy at reception is
making me uncomfortable, Mom.
We received a call.
Otherwise we never
would have known they were around.
It's true, we knew a robbery happened.
At the time,
we didn't know it was the mother.
The guy at reception gave us a call.
He was suspicious of them.
He had looked into it
and done some research,
so he called us about it.
We have to leave now.
Will you be okay?
As long as you can hold
my hand and be my eyes.
The street looks clear.
Yeah, it looked clear to me.
I was super careful the whole way,
just like you taught me.
Wonderful, baby.
We're not in the middle of our book.
See, Mom?
That's right, we're not, Bambi.
Because every time, you somehow save us.
[foreboding music playing]
All right, listen.
No one fires until I say so, okay?
- [Bambi] Are you okay?
- I'm okay.
Come on.
This way.
There's a taxi stand up ahead, Mom.
And after that,
we'll have to look for a boat.
Bambi,
do you sense that?
Yes, Mother. They're here for us.
They're too close this time. Go faster.
Go on.
[upbeat music playing in distance]
[crowd clamoring]
Okay, we gotta go blend in
with the evil crowd right now, baby.
Let's go.
[mother] I have a good feeling about this.
We're way past the middle of our book.
Mommy, we passed the harsh lines,
didn't we?
We can't give up, right?
We won't surrender.
Never.
We'll get off of this street, Bambi.
We always seem to find a way,
don't we, Mommy?
Bambi, you know what to do, don't you?
I do.
Bambi.
Even if we wanted to, we couldn't go back.
[ominous music playing]
- Run, Bambi.
- Yes, Mother.
Run! Run, Bambi!
Freeze!
[rapid gunfire]
[somber music playing]
[mother] "'Now, ' said his mother,
'get out of here,
and don't get close to me.'"
"Bambi jumped out with one last leap."
"He began to run,
and snow went everywhere."
"All of a sudden,
he felt his mother had been shot."
"But he didn't know if it was his mother
who had fallen to the ground."
"He was so frightened
to hear the explosions
that a curtain had
come down over his eyes,
and fear had completely enveloped him."
"Bambi continued
running through the forest,
without stopping or looking back."
[interviewee] He didn't even hesitate.
He shot her with the submachine gun.
But you know what?
She stayed behind on purpose,
so the girl could escape.
She said, "Run" Something.
Well I know I heard her say run,
and I didn't hear the rest.
"Baby" was how it sounded.
And she was looking at us
like she was telling us
to go fuck ourselves.
As for the girl,
she didn't even stop to look back.
She had a trash bag in her hand
and a duffel bag on her back,
and she vanished into the darkness.
We canvassed the whole area that night.
The hotels, the hostels,
the airports and bus stations
were all searched thoroughly.
But
that night was
the last time that anyone saw her.
[mysterious outro music playing]
