Can we just put all our cards
on the table and hash this out?
- There's nothing to hash out.
- You still don't trust me?
Why should I? It's late.
You shouldn't be here.
- You're not even on this case.
- I know it's hard.
Birthdays for loved ones
who aren't here anymore.
Thanks for sticking
with me on this case.
It was actually really nice
not to be alone yesterday.
We'll never go back
to the way things were.
It'll just be something new.
You know, something
I've been thinking about
is how we call ourselves artist.
But of course, our creativity
is not the kind that produces,
say, a magnificent work of art
or a breathtaking symphony
that lasts forever. No, no.
The ultimate irony for us
is that if we pull off the perfect con,
no one will even know
that we were there.
We came, we scored, we evaporated. Poof.
Or as someone much
smarter than I once said.
"Our revels now are ended.
These are actors, as I
foretold you were all spirits
and are now melted into thin air.
We are such stuff as dreams are made of.
But if this life is but a dream,
it's been a wonderful one.
And I'm left to ponder what
I'll find on the other side.
- When I awake."

[NOTIFICATION ALERT]
[THUNDER CRASHING]
[NOTIFICATION ALERT]
I'm glad I'm inside.
Hey, Chief, is this a
sleepwalking butt dial?
Now?
So what was so important about this case
that it couldn't wait until daylight?
There's been a murder on
a private island off shore.
We're heading to the marina
right now. Take the boat over.
The victim is a Serena Pendragon.
Thirty-nine year-old medium.
The psychic? Oldest scam in the book.
Come on. You're not a believer.
Psychics are the lowest of low.
They prey on people at the
worst times of their life.
And since you said private island,
I'm assuming the mark was rich.
You ever heard of the Hawksmoor family?
As in Hawksmoor Frozen Seafood?
- Yep, that's the one.
- I love their fried shrimp bites.
Mm. Me too. So bad, but so good.
Yeah, well, the founder,
Alistair Hawksmoor,
disappeared seven years ago.
His boat was found adrift at sea,
- but his body was never recovered.
- Let me guess.
The dead psychic put her touch
on Alistair's wealthy widow.
Sweet gig that must have been.
Isn't that island
supposed to be haunted?
Yeah, I remember hearing
stories about it as a kid.
The haunted Hawksmoor island.
Children think everything's haunted.
And then we grow up and we realize
there's no such thing as ghosts.
This coming from the person
who believes in aliens.
Aliens are people.
They just live on a different planet.
Ghosts are just puffs of smoke.
Come on. You don't actually believe.
Let's just say I want
to keep an open mind.
[WAVES CRASHING]
I can't see anything.
The ferryman said left over the bridge.
Look.
You the police?
Yes. Detective Ellis.
Derwood. I'm the caretaker.
Derwood the caretaker. Great name.
Very spooky.
Can you take us to the body?
You found it.
[TENSE MUSIC]
She was stabbed in the chest.
Knife likely.
Specifics TBD.
What about the time of death?
The body's still cooling.
Ballpark, roughly 2:00 A.M.
Well, you were the one
that found the body,
did you see anyone or hear anything?
- Not a peep.
- What were you doing wandering around
in the middle of the night?
Wicked storms brewing
and we could lose power.
I was out collecting extra firewood.
All right, let's start
sweeping the area.
We're looking for a
knife and footprints.
Although all this wet grass,
I don't know how many footprints
- [THUNDER CRASHES]
- [SCREAMS]
What? I thought you
didn't believe in ghosts.
I didn't until I saw that.
Alistair's killed Serena!
Oh, no!
Alistair?
As in Alistair Hawksmoor?
Yeah, except he's been
dead for seven years.
♪
Wow. He must have sold a
boatload of frozen fish fingers
to build this joint.
Dorothy
You're not supposed to
wander about on your own.
It's Alistair. He's back.
He killed Serena.
This is Clara, the housekeeper.
And now he wants to kill me too.
Now, now everything is fine.
Just let me get her back into bed.
Come on. Come, Dorothy, let me help you.
Oh.
Alistair's back. Oh, no.
Up until a few weeks ago,
she was sharp as a tack.
Who else is on the island?
Usually it's just the four
of us, including Serena.
But this weekend, Dorothy's stepchildren
and granddaughter are visiting.
And you keep track
of who comes and goes?
I keep a close watch on the dock.
So when Serena was killed,
there were only six people on
the island, is that correct?
That's right.
[THUNDER CRASHES]
Better fetch some more wood.
There, there. Nothing to be afraid of.
- You're safe.
- Ooh! Chocolate.
Do you mind if I have one? Ahh!!!
It's my chocolates.
Well, someone's never learned to share.
Okay, now, Dorothy, try to sleep.
Mmm.
Do you mind if I ask
you a few questions?
Mm.
I didn't want to talk about
Alistair in front of Dorothy.
It'll only upset her.
Does she really believe her dead
husband is trying to kill her?
Grief can do strange things to
people's minds, I can tell you.
To have your husband disappear at sea
and never find the body
She never got a real
chance to say goodbye.
That's why Dorothy first
contacted the medium.
She was desperate to know if
poor Alistair was at peace.
Well, did she get any answers?
Serena said all the usual things like
he's in a better place
now and he still loves you.
So why is Dorothy
suddenly afraid of him?
I don't know.
A few weeks ago, Dorothy's
mind began to wander.
She believed that Alistair
was angry with her,
wanted to hurt her.
That's when she invited Serena
to come live here full-time.
Is there any reason why Dorothy
would want to harm Serena?
- None.
- So can I ask you,
do you think Alistair's ghost is real?
Until recently, I would have said no.
Then what changed?
Alistair used to smoke
a particular kind of expensive cigar.
Lately, I swear, I've
smelled that smoke again.
[DOROTHY] Alistair
- Another nightmare.
- [DOROTHY] Oh!
So we got one dead medium
and a total of six
suspects, all on an island.
It shouldn't take too long.
Unless you think there's a smoking ghost
- going around and stabbing people.
- Of course not.
Our killer is obviously
somebody in this house.
I think it's time we met the
rest of this Hawksmoor family.
They're supposed to
be in the drawing room.
Hi. I'm Detective
Ellis, and this is my
I am Cassandra, special
police psychic consultant.
A conduit for the other side.
Another psychic?
Yes, and we only bring Cassandra
in on our very special cases.
And judging by the dead
medium on your lawn,
you guys need my special gifts.
Only if you can help wrap it
up sooner rather than later.
I have an open house on
the mainland tomorrow.
Someone is dead, sister dear.
I know, brother dear.
Don't use that scolding tone with me.
There are more important
things right now
than another one of
your real estate deals.
We all know you have
the more important job
- running the family business.
- All right.
Enough.
Let's not forget why we're here.
What does bring you
all here to the island?
It's been seven years to the day
our father went missing at sea.
His body was never found, so
he couldn't legally be declared dead.
Until today, that is.
Wait, I see something.
A paper.
A document. It looks official.
A will. I see a will.
Our family lawyer is
arriving on the morning boat
- to hold the reading.
- And as if today wasn't sad enough,
seeing how our dear
stepmother's declined,
and now poor Serena's murder.
Who would harm that sweet woman?
[CHUCKLES]
- You guys are too much.
- Ivy, quiet.
[SIGHS] Oh. Come on, Mom,
who are you trying to kid?
My finely tuned instrument
is picking up on some negative energy.
I'm sensing tension within this family.
- Tension, my ass. Try hatred.
- Ivy!
They pretend they're sad Serena's dead.
But the truth is, they've
bitched about her for years.
- Can't you control your child?
- When you have kids,
maybe then you can give an opinion.
Oh, wait. You can't have kids.
No, I can't have kids.
Don't bring that up again.
- I can bring up whatever
- Charming family.
Maybe they'll invite
us for Thanksgiving.
Oh, this is getting us nowhere.
- I think we should divide and conquer.
- Okay.
be quiet right now.
Clearly, that psychic
was out to score a payday
preying on the bereaved and vulnerable.
I can't imagine sinking as low
as to conning somebody
out of their money.
Mm. But fraud or no fraud,
she brought great solace
to my dear step-mama.
It's been very hard on her
since Father disappeared.
And where were you this
morning around 2:00 A.M.?
In bed asleep.
- And you didn't hear anything unusual?
- No.
But I take a sleeping pill
so I wouldn't wake if a
train went through my room.
But you know who wasn't sleeping?
I have insomnia.
When Father disappeared, I
took over the family business.
I had trouble sleeping ever since.
Must have been a big responsibility.
We sell $11 million of frozen
fish fingers every year.
Okay, so if you're up at 2:00 A.M.,
I mean, you must have heard something?
Surely some voices, a scream, footsteps?
Just the sound of waves.
Any idea why somebody
would want to kill Serena?
None at all. At least not
if the motive was financial.
- What do you mean by that?
- I'm afraid Dorothy doesn't have much time left.
When she's gone, then Serena
would have been dismissed anyway.
So why kill her now?
Honestly, I'm surprised
it took them this long.
They were both afraid
that Serena was trying
to take control of the
money through Dorothy.
But your grandfather's
will is being read today,
and they're all gonna leave
here multi-millionaires.
If money was the motive,
how does killing Serena make sense?
You're the psychic. You tell me.
- You're probably in the will, too.
- I don't care.
I'd give all the Hawksmoor millions
for just one more day with Grandpa.
I'm sensing you two were close.
He was more like a father to me,
loving, kind.
Which is why I don't see
what he ever saw in Dorothy.
But everyone, your mom, your uncle,
they speak so fondly of Dorothy.
They hate Dorothy.
Alistair and his first wife
couldn't have children of their own,
so they adopted Gil and Holly.
This house was so
full of love back then.
After she died, Alistair was devastated.
Then Dorothy swept into
his life and his home.
- And the kids resented Dorothy?
- Of course.
Not without reason. Dorothy
can be a demanding woman.
Can't abide anyone who doesn't
measure up to her standards.
That would include her own stepchildren?
I'm afraid so.
I've never seen a more spoiled bunch.
Those kids are always running home
when they're short of money.
How did they feel about Serena?
They called her terrible
names behind her back.
Some to her face as well.
So I'm guessing they weren't
too thrilled when she moved in.
The last few weeks, Serena wouldn't
even let them talk to Dorothy.
Do you think any of them
could be capable of murder?
I wouldn't doubt it.
If you ask me, the
Hawksmoors are cursed.
Hello.
That must be Dick, the lawyer.
- Hi. I'm
- You must be Dick, the lawyer.
- How did you
- I'm Cassandra, the psychic police consultant.
That's how I sensed you
were the dick lawyer.
I mean, Dick the lawyer.
Tell me, how is Dorothy?
She's upstairs resting.
But the housekeeper said
she's been asking for you.
Well, I'm here for the will reading,
which we should do immediately.
It was a rough crossing,
and I really don't want
to miss the next boat back.
[THUNDER CRASHING]
My team is done.
We're taking the body back
for the full spa treatment.
Any preliminaries you can share?
Vic was stabbed between
1:00 and 3:00 A.M.
No murder weapon turned up as yet.
- You're sure it was a knife?
- Roughly six inches long.
And judging from the entry wound,
it had a flat edge.
I'll call with further details.
[THUNDER CRASHES]
Storm's getting closer.
And one of these lovely
people is a killer.
You kids have fun.
Rolling in.
Look who I brought.
Everyone's favorite person.

And Olive said the murder
weapon we're looking for
is a flat-edged knife, six inches long.
Okay. So money-grubbing kids, check.
Evil stepmother, check.
And conniving fake medium, check.
Serena was killed on
the exact same morning
that Alistair was to be declared dead.
There's no way that's
a coincidence. I just
haven't connected all the dots yet.
We're doubly grieved today.
Aside from the tragic death of Serena,
we are here to legally recognize
the passing of Alistair Hawksmoor.
[THUNDER CRASHES]
Wounded in service to his country,
beloved husband to Dorothy
and father to his adopted family.
And well, very dear friend to me.
Time is money, Dick.
Let's cut to the chase.
Now that Alistair is gone,
the only one whose
fingerprint can open this safe
is Dorothy.
My dear.
[BEEPING]
I could cut the tension in here
with a six inch, flat-edged knife.
- Ah!
- What the hell?
[SCREAM]
Alistair! He's come back from the grave.
He wants to kill us all.
Maybe I am psychic.
This matches the coroner's
description of the murder weapon.
That's impossible. It's
Dad's fishing knife.
Gil, please.
[BEEP]
[BEEP]
Great. So you two couldn't open it,
and Clara and Derwood failed as well.
We always assume the knife
went overboard with him.
Dorothy's back in bed.
What's the game?
I'm gonna need you to put your
thumb on the scanner, please.
Why would I stab Serena with a knife
and then hide it in a safe I
knew would be open in the morning.
Just do as he says.
Don't talk to my daughter like that.
[BEEPS]
Well, there's still one
person who's yet to try.
I've known this family for 40 years.
I mean, you can't honestly believe.
Look, we just need to be sure.
[GROANS]
[BEEPS]
Well, that settles it.
Dorothy has to be the murderer.
For once, I agree with you.
I had no idea she was so far gone.
There's no way Dorothy
could stab anyone.
She can barely muster up the
strength to brush her own hair.
Well, unfortunately, facts don't lie.
She's the only one that
could open that safe.
Max, what are you doing?
We've lost cell service.
Please, could we
continue with the reading.
Yes, but not here. We'll
continue in the dining room
until I can get a
forensics team in here,
this room is off-limits.
Oh, and needless to say,
nobody will be leaving
this island until I say so.
I, Alistair Hawksmoor,
being of sound mind and body,
do hereby declare this to be
my last will and testament,
revoking all previous wills made by me.
Here it comes.
To my two children, Gil and Holly,
and my granddaughter, Ivy,
I leave
- Nothing.
- What?
- Is this a joke?
- I may be psychic,
but I didn't see that coming.
I realize I have spoiled
them far too long,
and it is time for them
to make their own way
- in this world.
- What the hell?
Therefore, I bequeath my entire estate
to the one individual
whose love, companionship,
and support I found
lacking in my family.
To my beloved wife
- [GIL] No way.
- Dorothy Hawksmoor.
This is ridiculous.
We'll take this to court.
She doesn't deserve any of this.
We're going to fight this.
You're free, of course,
to contest the will.
But the last thing Alistair told me
was that he trusted Dorothy to
do the right thing with his money.
To think of all the
sucking up I've done.
He loved that woman more
than anything in the world.
[GIL] This is ridiculous!
You know she has done
- nothing for this family
- I wonder if Dorothy knew about this.
Okay, let's just say that Dorothy knew
that she was going to inherit her
husband's entire estate, right?
How does killing your trusted
spiritual advisor make any sense?
I mean, what problem is that solving?
[EERIE VOICE]
Is that a man's voice?
Yeah, but everybody's downstairs.
[DOROTHY] Get out! Leave me alone!
Go away! Please go away!
Hey, hey, hey. It's okay.
You're safe now, all right?
- Who were you talking to?
- Alistair.
He won't leave me alone.
Don't worry. There's nobody here but us.
Oh
Look, you know, we both heard something.
This is the classic spiritualist con.
There must be something hidden
in this room, like a speaker.
Okay, you keep her
calm. I'll start looking.
Oh
Alistair would never hurt you.
He loved you.
He's very, very angry.
Why would he be angry?
He wants to kill me.
[CRYING]
It's okay.
Hey, come check this out.
A speaking horn?
A what?
I used to live in an old
brownstone that had one of these.
Before the days of intercoms,
you would speak into that horn,
and you could talk to

- Pinky swear.
I've never told anyone this before.
It's about Daniel.
Daniel was your brother
and you are his brother.
Yeah. That's right.
You know, when Daniel
was about five years old,
he started sneaking
into my bedroom at night.
- He was too scared to sleep alone.
- Aww.
He said he kept hearing these
noises coming from the walls.
So I told him I'd sleep with him
and we could figure it out together.
And sure enough, he was right.
There was something.
What was it?
It was a cricket.
Like, ten feet long, with huge eyes.
No, no, just a regular cricket.
So, of course, I told him there
was nothing to be afraid of.
If anything,
it was the cricket that was afraid.
I told him that crickets make that noise
when they're trying to
find a partner or a friend.
That essentially, that's
just a cricket saying,
I feel alone.
So then Daniel leaned
into this little hole
that was in the wall,
and he just whispered,
it's okay, you're not alone.
I'll be your cricket.
That's so sweet.
And then the sound just stopped.
It was the strangest thing.
So anyway, after that day,
if either one of us was
ever upset or sad or alone,
we'd just whisper,
I'll be your cricket.
I feel like I'm crying. Am I crying?
Cricket became like a code word for us.
You know, if you said that,
you didn't need to say anything else.
You just knew that
whatever you were facing,
you weren't going to
have to face it alone.
On the day of Daniel's funeral,
I went back to my apartment.
I never felt so sad,
so alone.
I was really missing my cricket.
And then all of a sudden

I heard this noise so I followed
it to my bedroom. And then,

Well, according to the marina manager,
Dick's boat wasn't docked
the night of the murder.
And that weird marina guy said
that he saw Dick leaving at 1:00 A.M.
and get this, not returning
until just before dawn.
Okay. So what are you waiting for?

We found recordings of Dick and
Alistair's legal conversations.
Dick spliced them together. I texted

death is between 1:00 and 3:00 A.M.

the marina at 1:00,
we're roughly 45 minutes by boat.
So what, he docks on the
other side of the island,
kills Serena and then leaves
without anyone knowing.

the Hawksmoor fortune.

But when Serena discovered
that you were drugging Dorothy's

See, she figured out that you were
going to declare Dorothy incompetent

Yeah, the skeleton's missing an arm.
This is Alistair Hawksmoor.
He was never missing at sea.
Unless he crawled in there
and walled himself up.
He was murdered. Look,
there's a piece of metal
launched between his ribs.
Looks like the tip of a knife to me.
Well, it's a perfect fit.
Whoever killed Alistair seven years ago
used the same knife to kill Serena.
We always assumed Dad
was dead, but murdered?
We're sorry to break
it to you like this.
Does this affect the will?
We just found out our
father was murdered.
Can you stop thinking about
money for a single minute.
Dick, answer the question.
Legally, no. The will stands.
What's all the commotion?
I just put Dorothy to bed for the night.
I'm afraid we just
discovered Alistair's body
in the basement behind a wall.
Oh my God.
Dorothy finds out, this will
really put her over the edge.
You're right.
No way she can handle the estate.
She's not in her right mind.
If she's examined and declared unfit,
a conservatorship would
revert to one of you.
- Which one?
- Well, I've run the family business
- for the last seven years.
- And run it into the ground you mean.
- That's a lie.
- I should be conservator.
You're the one who's up
to her eyeballs in debt.
- How dare you?
- As entertaining as all of this is,
it's getting us nowhere.
She's right. What about you, Dick?
Me?
You want me to manage
the conservatorship?
I need to test out a theory.
You've been managing our
legal affairs for years.
We trust you.
Dick, as long as I get my fair share.
[KNOCKING]
Oh, excuse me, I have allergies.
I know you worked for
Alistair for years.
His murder must be a shock to you.
But your tears tell a different story.
How did you know?
I'm psychic, remember?
Does anybody else know?
When Alistair and I first fell in love,
we decided to keep it a secret.
At least until after
he divorced Dorothy.
To this day, she has never found out.
So he was going to end his marriage.
So that we could be married.
These are his love letters.
All these years, I thought
that he got cold feet,
decided to run away.
I feel so ashamed.
I should have known better.
Since you've been here,
have you felt anything from Alistair?
Maybe if I could hold his letters.
Oh.
- He's here.
- Oh.
It's Alistair. He
He says he loves you, but
But what?
But he wants you to move on.
He wants you to be happy.
You've been sad for too long.
When he disappeared,
it was like a piece of me went with him.
I guess I've hung around all these years
hoping he would somehow return.
He said, you have such a big heart.
You just have to give
it to someone else.
Thank you so much.
Do you mind if I keep these letters?
It might help with the investigation.
Of course.
I have nothing to hide anymore.
No, listen, I'm telling you,
rice has no place in a burrito.
It's just filler.
Look at all that space that
could be going to beans, look.
That's what should be in there.
The last thing you need is more beans.
[PHONE RINGS]
What the hell is that supposed to mean?
- Hello?
- [ELLIS] Hey, what are you two up to?
Well, apparently one of us is
contributing to global warming, but
Ignore her. What's up?
Look, the signal is
hit and miss out here.
I just texted you a bunch of
names I need you to check out.
Send me whatever you can, asap.
The storm's really kicking up out here.
I don't know how much longer
Hello?
[CALL DROPS]
I don't
Damn.
- [THUNDER CRASHES]
- Jesus.
You're not leaving this house.
What do you mean?
Well, the tides are too rough.
No more crossings tonight.
- So what, we're stuck here?
- Together.
Alistair used to come down
here when he wanted some quiet.
That there's a sofa bed for two.
Right. But it's such a big house.
Surely there's got to be at
least two bedrooms available.
The upstairs bedrooms are all occupied
and the old wing is prone to flooding.
Okay.
You'll be nice and warm here.
Call if you need anything else.
[ELLIS SIGHS]
- You can take the
- I'll take the bench.
Okay, so Alistair was
planning on divorcing Dorothy
because he fell in love
with the housekeeper.
Right. But the lawyer said
that Alistair changed the will
because he loved Dorothy so much.
So why leave everything to a
woman you're about to divorce?
Are you sure that those
letters back up what Clara said?
Oh, yeah, these letters got any hotter,
they would burst into flames.
Oh, I forgot, I scored us some snacks.
Snacks?
- You stole Dorothy's chocolates?
- She'll never know.
I was getting kind of hungry.
Mm caramel.
Nuts.
Oh.
- You got any more?
- Yeah.
[THUNDER CRASHES]
And to think we were under
the same roof for so long,
I was afraid to tell
you how I really felt.
Aww, he was shy.
I still remember our first
kiss in the back garden
under the blue glow of a full moon.
But now I've come to realize
that I never really started
living until I found you.
Huh? That's weird.
Huh? It's kind of sweet.
No.
Why did he write that in neon green ink?
You're crazy. The
letters are bright red.
Look how big the letters are.
Yeah, you're right. It's
like they're growing.
Wow.
[GASPS]
[LAUGHTER]
[LAUGHTER]
Wait, wait, I forget.
Why were we laughing?
I don't remember.
[LAUGHING]
I'm only crying because
I just love him so much.
- He's just such a pure soul.
- Yeah.
I'm gonna be away all night.
I know he's got food, but
what if he feels scared?
- You know, am I a horrible father?
- No.
Why are you so far away?
What do you mean, I'm right beside you?
When you said you wanted
to keep an open mind,
what did you mean by that?
No.
I don't know. You're
just gonna laugh at me.
I promise I won't.
- Pinky swear.
- Pinky swear.
I've never told anyone this before.
It's about Daniel.
Daniel was your brother
and you are his brother.
Yeah. That's right.
You know, when Daniel
was about five years old,
he started sneaking
into my bedroom at night.
- He was too scared to sleep alone.
- Aww.
He said he kept hearing these
noises coming from the walls.
So I told him I'd sleep with him
and we could figure it out together.
And sure enough, he was right.
There was something.
What was it?
It was a cricket.
Like, ten feet long, with huge eyes.
No, no, just a regular cricket.
So, of course, I told him there
was nothing to be afraid of.
If anything,
it was the cricket that was afraid.
I told him that crickets make that noise
when they're trying to
find a partner or a friend.
That essentially, that's
just a cricket saying,
I feel alone.
So then Daniel leaned
into this little hole
that was in the wall,
and he just whispered,
it's okay, you're not alone.
I'll be your cricket.
That's so sweet.
And then the sound just stopped.
It was the strangest thing.
So anyway, after that day,
if either one of us was
ever upset or sad or alone,
we'd just whisper,
I'll be your cricket.
I feel like I'm crying. Am I crying?
Cricket became like a code word for us.
You know, if you said that,
you didn't need to say anything else.
You just knew that
whatever you were facing,
you weren't going to
have to face it alone.
On the day of Daniel's funeral,
I went back to my apartment.
I never felt so sad,
so alone.
I was really missing my cricket.
And then all of a sudden
What? What?
I heard this noise so I followed
it to my bedroom. And then,
when I swung the door open,
right there on the windowsill was, uh
Your cricket?
Yeah.
I'll be your cricket.
Ellis.
Ellis?
Yep. Yep. I'm right
here. Jeez, stop yelling.
What are you doing under the bed?
I don't know.
What happened last night?
Derwood turned on the fire,
and we read Alistair's letters.
And then
[IN UNISON] Did we?
- No.
- No.
- We did, didn't we?
- We did. We did.
How did that happen?
Dorothy's chocolates.
I think we were dosed.
Oh God.
You know,
this reminds me of my long lost weekend
in Joshua Tree, circa 2019.
I met this wandering
group of yoga masters,
and when I say we stretched the limit
Okay, Max. TMI.
Wait, you know what? That explains it.
Dorothy isn't losing her
mind. She's just on drugs.
I guess grandma still
knows how to party.
I think someone's been drugging
Dorothy without her knowledge.
And I guess we were
caught in the crossfire.
Look, I think we should
probably talk about, um
Yeah, we probably should.
Agreed.
But maybe we should
find that killer first.
Yeah, you're probably right.
Okay, I'm gonna go outside
and see if I can get a signal.
Simmons and Yates might have an update.
Yeah, I'm gonna go check
out those chocolates.
- You good?
- Yeah.
I'll just put this. Okay.
No hits on the handyman,
the housekeeper,
or any of the kids.
[ELLIS] What about the lawyer?
Funny you should mention him.
Turns out Dick's been living
on his boat in the marina
ever since separating from his wife.
Last time I checked, that's not a crime.
Well, according to the marina manager,
Dick's boat wasn't docked
the night of the murder.
And that weird marina guy said
that he saw Dick leaving at 1:00 A.M.
and get this, not returning
until just before dawn.
Okay. So what are you waiting for?
- Go check out his boat.
- Yeah, we already did.
We found recordings of Dick and
Alistair's legal conversations.
Dick spliced them together. I texted
you a sample of the audio file.
[AUDIO] I have returned from
the grave to take you with me.
That sounds like the voice we heard
coming from Dorothy's room.
What the hell is going on over there?
Have you guys been slimed yet?
Normally we would bring Dick in,
but until this storm lets up
- Ellis?
- [CALL DROPS]
Game's up, Clara.
We know you're drugging Dorothy.
What are you talking about?
The chocolates, they're
laced with something.
- What are you putting in these?
- Nothing.
I just opened the box and
put them on Dorothy's tray.
But they're not drugged.
Dick's been sending them for years.
- The lawyer is sending these?
- Dorothy loves them.
Always has one in the
morning and one at night.
- There's a pinprick in the bottom.
- [GASPS]
And in this one, too.
Looks like it was done
with a hypodermic needle.
That's so strange. Serena was
asking about the chocolates too.
- The medium?
- Hm.
What did she say?
Just that she wanted
to know who sent them.
Come to think of it,
that was the day
before she was murdered.
[DOROTHY] Leave me alone!
[CRYING]
All right, all right.
Hey, what's going on?
She's heard the voice again.
- It's okay. There's no one here.
- [CRYING]
- [VOICE] I know your secrets.
- Alistair?
- Oh!
- I'd know his voice anywhere.
Clara, get Dorothy out of here, please.
- Okay. Come on, Dorothy.
- Make it stop.
- That's okay.
- [VOICE] I know your secrets.
There's no way that could be
Alistair's voice. It's impossible.
Not unless you know
how the trick is done.
It's coming from over here.
[VOICE] I know your secrets.
Huh.
[VOICE] I know your secrets.
So it wasn't coming from
the speaking tube after all.
Set to a timer meant to go off
several times throughout the day.
I knew it was a scam.
The family lawyer.
[IN UNISON] That dick.
Serena was asking about the chocolates
before she was murdered.
So she must have figured
out they were dosed.
Well, the coroner said the time of
death is between 1:00 and 3:00 A.M.
Now, we know Dick left
the marina at 1:00,
we're roughly 45 minutes by boat.
So what, he docks on the
other side of the island,
kills Serena and then leaves
without anyone knowing.
- Yeah. It tracks.
- So Dick was drugging Dorothy
to make everyone believe she was crazy
and then he takes over
the Hawksmoor fortune.
So did Dick kill Alistair, too?
If only the dead could talk.
Maybe they can.
- I don't get it.
- Why are we all here?
Is it about the will?
Has there been a development?
You can say that.
We have been summoned by the other side.
Are you ready to speak to the dead?
May I get you your robe?
Oh, leave me alone and don't fuss.
But the will has been read,
why am I not rid of all of you yet?
Alistair has something to tell us.
Could you all close your
eyes and hold hands, please?
Alistair Hawksmoor, your
family is here to help you
cross to the other side.
Are you here?
Knock one for yes. Twice for no.
If he's not here, how
can he knock twice?
I said, are you here?
- [LOUD THUD]
- Oh!
Thank you, spirit.
- Do you smell that?
- Is that?
- It's Grandpa's cigar.
- Oh my God, I smell it too.
Alistair has a message for us,
but he says he needs a human vessel.
Please don't be alarmed about
what you're about to witness.
Ooooooh-oooooo!
Ooooooh-oooooo!
I am here.
Uh, Alistair, why have you returned?
To seek justice.
I know who killed Serena.
- Is it someone in this room?
- Yes.
- Dick killed Serena.
- [ALL GASP]
What? [CHUCKLES]
That's that's crazy.
Serena knew he was drugging Dorothy
to try and take over my estate.
You little rat!
I mean, do you seriously believe
He killed her with the same knife
that he tried to kill me with.
I thought you were my
friend and you killed me.
I'm not taking the fall for this.
I didn't kill you.
- She did.
- [ALL GASP]
Shut up, you fool!
Oh, that's right, I remember now.
Dorothy killed me.
She found out you were
going to divorce her.
- You bitch!
- She killed you.
She called me in to clean up the mess.
Just like I'd been cleaning up
the messes of you spoiled brats.
I bet she always knew
Serena was a fraud.
She was just keeping a psychic around
to help her play the grieving widow.
And after you walled
up Alistair's dead body
in the basement, you forged a new will.
But when Serena discovered
that you were drugging Dorothy's
chocolates, she confronted you.
See, she figured out that you were
going to declare Dorothy incompetent
so you could swoop in and
take control of the estate.
Therefore, Serena had to die.
Dick, you've ruined everything!
- Dorothy, you killed our father!
- You tried to steal all our money!
You killed Grandpa!
Do you admit it?! You killed my father!
After all of these years,
you lived in this house!
Well, I did not see that coming.
I guess I'm not so psychic after all.
[GIL] so many years taking
care of this family's company!
All I get is this! You killed
So Dorothy paid Dick to hide
the body and keep his silence.
Rather than chance a
murder investigation,
he decided it would be safer
to just conceal the murder
and wait out the years until
Alistair could be declared dead.
But Dick got greedy and
decided to double-cross Dorothy.
He was the one who
originally installed the safe,
so he knew the master code to
bypass the fingerprint scanner.
And Alistair's will that was read?
Dick forged that.
But luckily, Alistair's intentions
were clearly spelled out
In these love letters.
He planned to marry you
and change his will to make
you the sole beneficiary.
He was too generous. I told him
I didn't want anything but him.
[CHUCKLES]
Thank you both for everything.
Of course.
Well that's that.
Yeah, I guess, uh, I guess that's that.
- We should probably
- Yeah, we need to talk about it.
- Go ahead.
- No. You first.
Look, I just don't want to do that thing
where we pretend like
something didn't happen.
- Of course not.
- Because
something definitely happened.
But I don't want it to be
weird between us, you know?
- Well, me neither.
- Because we work together
and I thought we were finally
- getting to a good place.
- Me too.
Okay, good.
Yeah. So you can just
put this behind us.
It's already fading so fast
in the rear-view mirror.
Friends?
Friends.
Okay.
By the way, it was really cool what
you did back there in the séance.
What do you mean?
Alistair's cigar smoke.
I didn't do that. I
thought that was you.
Okay, don't play with me.
I'm dead serious, Max.
I didn't do anything.
Well, then who was it?
[THUNDER CRASHING]
Max.
This arrived this morning,
must be for the office.
P.S. We're out of coffee. Love, Max.
You know, no one's
stopping you from buying
more coffee once in a while darling. Mm.
Mm. Say cheese.
[CAMERA SHUTTER SNAPS]
I seem to remember reading
somewhere that Tequila
has a natural source of caffeine in it.
