Witness (2012) s01e03 Episode Script

South Sudan

Original air date November 19, 2012 All right, where are we gonna start? We'll have to start in Afghanistan, because that's where I started, isn't it? Two years after I came to the newspaper, I decided to take all the money I had, buy myself a computer-- I had a little camera-- try myself as a freelance, and went to Afghanistan for three months and ended up staying there for four years, actually.
In France, I've been accused of being unpatriotic for taking these pictures of Taliban, but as a war reporter, you have to cover both sides, and that's just what I did.
For me, it was the first time I've been in this kind of conflicted country, and I was amazed and fascinated.
So I worked in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sudan, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Somalia, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Libya.
Bonjour.
Salaam alaikum.
What? So we go walking? Let's go as far as you can with the car, then we'll do the rest walking.
Salaam alaikum.
You speak English? Arrow Boys? Salaam alaikum.
Yes, Arrow Boys.
Where? Can you just ask if the Arrow Boys are this way or this way? - Yeah.
- Yeah? Take me there.
Salaam alaikum.
Salaam alaikum.
Samuel is working? - He's there in the garden.
- Oh, he's in the garden.
Samuel is coming.
- Hello.
How are you? - How are you? I'm fine.
And you? It's nice to see you.
Yes, and you.
- Look what I brought you from last time.
- Yeah.
- And you are here.
- Yeah.
Mm.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And what did-- what did they do? Do you think next time you go on the patrol, us two can come with you? - Yeah.
- And I will take pictures also.
- Yes? - Yes.
How are you? Okay, yeah, yeah.
- In August? - Yeah.
If this is, like, South Sudan, and this is Congo, yes, where are they now? - And that's where they are very active? - Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, of course.
- Abel.
- Yes? You call us if there is anything important.
- Yeah, I will give you information.
- Okay.
- Thank you very much.
- Thank you so much.
Okay, yeah.
So we are looking for recent refugees who moved around because of LRA.
Merci beaucoup.
Tell us the daywhen you were abducted by tongo tongo.
Okay.
And did you want to kill many people? So, I am a journalist, a photographer, and I wanted to go on patrol with you and your Arrow Boys.
Of course.
Which Arrow Boys would you suggest we should go with, like, the most active place? Whenever we are going for one operation, we just make like this and say, "This is our land.
We are now going to fight for our land.
" Then we go.
- Peter.
- Peter.
Okay, I'll try to remember most of you.
- Okay.
- Yeah.
- So we stay here.
- Yeah.
Okay, very good.
This is good enough for me.
Was he abducted by the LRA? Yes, he was abducted by the LRA when he was 12 years old.
What does he want to do now? He wants to go to school.
- Because he didn't go to school before, did he? - No.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Was she presented to Kony when she arrived? How old was she when she--? Was she scared to come back to her family with a-- being pregnant? You know, me - Baby? - Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Hey, stop it.
We have authorization.
Who are you anyway? Can I see your papers first? - Who? - You.
- I? I am authority.
You should good behave, eh? And you too.
You should watch your language.
- I am in my country.
- Yes, that's why.
I am your guest.
I don't like people shouting at me and asking me for my paper when they don't have any uniform or paper.
Who is he? He's not going to slap me, is he? It will look very bad for him.
It's still okay, 'cause I can get away with a lot of things, since I am a woman.
Here we are.
From here they enter Sudan.
We came in contact with them on the 13th of September.
Okay.
And from-- that's where we got those guns.
So this one was supposed to be - for the personal security of Kony, right? - Kony.
Exactly.
That's how you know that last week you nearly got Kony, right? So where do you think they are now? Well, they're still in the general area in the Central African Republic here.
And for us to have some contact, where do you think it would be the best to go? Right now, of course, I don't know exactly where.
I'm not very sure.
If this signal is certain, that in one or two days there will be contact.
That's when I will take you.
- Sadi.
- Sadi.
Sadi.
Why? So he's deaf now? I see.
So he can't remember how many people he killed, but what he does remember very well is he killed.
In some situations it's helpful to look through the camera to make it more bearable, to have this filter between you and what you're photographing.
These things that people go through here-- parents burying their children-- for us seems impossible, but I think in our world we completely forgot that death is part of everyday life.
But, you know, two years ago, um, I lost my boyfriend-- like, somebody I really love-- of a heart attack.
He was only 33.
Yeah, I don't know.
It's really hard.
Like, he died in my arms.
I saw him going.
And I never see that-- I hope I will never see that again, ever.
After, I just thought I would be more touched by other people grieving, but I don't think it's true.
It's just, like-- makes you feel a little bit better because suddenly it's becoming normal again-- you know, you're not the only one.
That's all.
- Want to go back? - Yeah.
Salaam alaikum.
- Yeah, this man.
- Okay.
- This one.
- Okay.
Oh, okay, I see.
That's reassuring.
And you trained all the boys here? - Yeah, yeah.
- They are good fighters? - They are good fighters, yes.
Because you don't want to have a fight at--? Yeah.
Here.
What's happening? What is his name? Justin, Justin, don't fall asleep.
Justin? Yeah? Keep yourself-- try to not go to sleep, yes? You'll be fine.
We'll take you to the hospital.
You'll be okay.
You'll be fine, yeah? So don't be-- yeah? Don't be too scared.
You'll be okay.
Okay.
Okay, Justin, don't sleep, huh? Darling, you don't go to sleep, huh? Justin? Yeah.
Keep there, yeah? I'm there.
Does it hurt? Does it hurt a lot? Is it painful? You okay? Keep there, keep there.
All right.
You okay, Justin? Justin? Sorry.
Here.
Okay.
Let's keep focusing.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
