Wolf Lake (2011) s01e00 Episode Script

Unaired Pilot

Man: There are those among us who can move at will between the world of the wolves and the world of the humans.
My people call them skinwalkers.
Many of these settled here, in the deep forests.
For hundreds of years after the great war of the clans, they lived in peace with both wolves and humans.
Now the clans have come to war.
( safety clicking ) ( gunshots ) ( whimpering ) How'd this girl get in the way, Carl ? Where'd she come from ? Where's the other one-- I know I hit it.
We gotta get her to the hospital.
Hospital-- What are you talking about ? She's dead, Harvey, can't you see that ? Come on, help me get her out of here.
What are you talking about-- We gotta tell the sheriff.
- It wasn't our fault.
- Of course it wasn't our fault.
She got in the way.
But I'm not gonna lose my ranch and everything I have 'cause some damn girl got in the way.
Carl, the others ones are gonna find out for sure.
- Who's gonna find out ? - Them.
The ones in the woods.
I don't ever want to hear you talk about them, you got that ? ( Growling ) ( growling ) ( growling ) I'm getting out of here.
Harvey, keep yourself together.
We're gonna get 'em and that'll be the end of it.
Get back here, you stupid son of a bitch ! Man: No, no.
( Screaming ) (Music plays) You got my nose ! ( Phone ringing ) Hello ? Hey ' Aw, Russell.
Okay, well, I'll wait to eat with you.
All right, bye-bye- When is Daddy coming home ? Daddy has to work late at the firehouse, sweetie.
He won't be home 'til after dark.
He better hurry.
Hey Dad.
Hey, sweet girl, I figured you'd be home by now.
I'm waiting for Davi.
She's really late.
What do you think ? It's kind of red.
I've never seen you wear that color.
Maybe this is the real me.
I have to work late tonight-- about time you're getting home.
Dad, it's the weekend.
Don't stay out too late, okay ? Good night, Dad.
They're gonna know something's wrong.
They're not gonna know anything unless you tell 'em.
I feel sick.
We're gonna go in there, we're gonna drink a couple of beers, and shoot some pool like we always do after hunting.
And you're not gonna say anything about wolves or the girl, not in this bar tonight, not ever.
- What are we gonna do ? - Just shut up.
Evening, boys.
Evening, Jack.
It's Saturday night and I don't see a deer draped over this truck.
No luck, Jack, not today.
Didn't even get a shot off.
What about you, Carl ? You get a shot off ? You ought to go out with me some weekend, Jack.
Maybe I'll get lucky.
I don't hunt anymore.
Say, listen.
You hear anything from Hannah lately ? No, no I haven't.
Not for years.
Of course, you already knew that, didn't you, Carl ? ( Wolf growling ) ( wolf growling ) woman: Lily ? Lily ? Lily ! You can't have her.
You'll never have her.
- ( Gun cocking ) - No ! - Honey, no ! - What are you doing, Alex ? Why didn't you stop me ? Call the sheriff's office ? Call Jack ! Woman: Sheriff-- Jack, you're net gonna believe this.
Your sister-in-law just called.
She says there's a wolf in her yard.
I'm on it.
(Music plays) Don't worry, honey.
We're gonna catch that wolf.
She's gone, Daddy.
She ? How do you know it's a female ? She told me.
You have a nice sleep, sweetie.
Russell: when I came out on the porch, I heard you talking to the wolf.
Come on, Russell, I was trying to scare it away.
I was worried it was gonna hurt Lily.
Yeah, but the tone in your voice, it sounded like you were-- I I was never so scared in all my life.
( Knocking ) Couldn't find a wolf anywhere in town.
Get in here-- You're off duty.
I need my family around me.
Jack: Why are wolves coming into town ? It's like a line has been crossed.
You should have seen the look in that wolf's eyes, Jack.
They're not afraid of us.
Maybe the answer's right here.
Right here in town.
I don't want to talk about it anymore.
It's over.
We're all fine.
How are things at home, Jack ? God, it's tough.
Sophia and I, we don't talk as easily as we used to.
I'm gone a lot and sometimes I wonder if I lean on Sophia too much, taking care of the house and me.
I don't know if she's had enough time to be a teenager.
Hey Jack, we all know it's not easy to raise a kid on your own.
Sophia's a great girl, you've done a great job.
My sister left you a long time ago, Jack.
- You deserve better.
- Don't start, Alex.
Hannah was a wild one.
She should have stayed and taken care of you and Sophia.
Just as well.
She made it pretty clear she didn't want the job.
Well, it's late.
I'll have a deputy stop by every half hour or so during the night shift, check in on things.
Good night.
Good night.
(Music plays) ( wolf growling ) Carl, is that you ? ( Growling ) I know it's you, Carl ! You're one of them ! Ahh 1 Ahhh ! ( Wolf howling ) (Music plays) Morning.
Can I get something to eat ? Grill's not hot yet.
Just looking for a warm place to sit.
Maybe some coffee ? Man: We don't often have hikers this far out.
Yeah, I've been hiking around these woods for a couple of weeks.
I really could use a decent cup of coffee.
The one I make backpacking, it ain't that great.
It's not too safe out in those woods at night.
Why not ? Most folks just stay away when it gets dark.
I'll keep that in mind.
Just trying to be friendly.
What's the antenna for ? Tracking wolves.
- Yeah, we hear 'em at night.
- Shut up, Billy.
Aren't you one of those government agents ? Yeah.
Bureau of Wildlife Management.
You folks have any troubles with the wolves around here ? Last one I seen come close to town got hisself shot.
That's his pelt up there on the wall there.
Hello, boys.
Haven't seen you in awhile.
Sums up.
Need a beer ? I don't drink anymore, Carl, you know that.
Forgot.
Something I can get you ? Yeah, how about the specialty of the house ? One of your delicious hard-boiled eggs.
( Rhythmic tapping ) The wolves have come back.
There weren't very many wolves around here for years.
'Til you government geniuses started setting them free in the woods, and if you think us ranchers are gonna be feeding your wolves with our livestock, you guessed wrong.
Well, see, that's one of the reasons I came down here.
We have a livestock predation program.
Ranchers will be compensated for their losses, but our studies show that only one percent of all ranchers are gonna have a problem with these wolves.
Bull.
Cattle been tore apart.
Men gone missing, good men.
Friends of mine.
I got a truck outside-- You want a ride to town ? Yeah, I wouldn't mind a ride.
Maybe you can tell me where I can get a good cup of coffee.
Yeah, well, seeing as yours didn't work out too good.
Boys.
Real fun group of guys.
You saved my ass in there.
Now you know what it's like to be the only Indian in the joint.
I'm Noah Cassidy.
I know.
I got your e-mails.
I figured you'd be coming out of the woods at the trail heads, so I kept an eye out for you.
You're Professor Duke Joseph ? In the flesh.
I found three cases in the county of people reported missing one way or the other just this past year.
Runaway kid, lost hunter, and a tourist who stopped here, never got home.
Normal stuff.
Hunters get lost.
Kids run away.
What if none of that's true ? What if What if the wolves got all of 'em ? We would have found the bodies, Jack.
Not if they were eaten.
The question is, what kind of wolf would come all the way into town ? I mean, what are they after ? I'm tracking the wolves we collared and released.
The pack's we reintroduced up north suddenly started drifting down here, no one knows why.
I was hoping we could work together on this, Professor.
Call me Duke.
I think it's possible that we're gonna be friends.
I reserved you a cabin at the Wolf Lake Lodge outside of town.
We'll go into the woods tomorrow.
Good.
With a name like Duke I wasn't sure what to expect.
Oh, I get that a lot.
My mom figured I was behind the eight-ball from the start, being from the res, being Indian.
She says she named me Duke so that when I went out into the world, I'd be royalty already.
But my dad says it's because he loved John Wayne, who, as you know, is a renowned Indian killer, the irony being lost on Dad.
He just liked westerns.
And beer.
So it depends on who tells you the story.
I tell people that I'm named for Duke Ellington.
It's classier.
My whole family's just a bunch of liars.
I'm looking forward to tracking collars with you.
Not often you get to work with a legend.
Oh, well.
Didn't know the wildlife department issued guns to its guys.
I'm out in the woods a lot.
Gives me a little protection.
I didn't know you came from around here.
I didn't.
My res is east of here.
But I like this town.
It's the last real place.
I'm gonna need a lot of support for the reintroduction program, starting here with the law.
I think I'll come in with you.
I want to hear this.
( Door opening ) Jack: Duke.
- Jack.
- Can I help you ? Yeah Sheriff, my name is Noah Cassidy, I'm from the-- The Wildlife Bureau, I know.
Bad news travels fast.
I'm just gonna plow right ahead here.
I'll accentuate the positive.
So Sheriff, I was hoping to discuss with you our program for the reintroduction of the wolves up north.
Let me make myself clear.
I'm gonna shoot every wolf I see inside the city limits, radio collar or not.
Then I'd have to arrest you.
A wolf came into the backyard of my family last night, right here in town.
Almost attacked my niece.
And that little girl, she means a great deal to me.
I'm very sorry that happened, Sheriff.
You probably have a sick wolf on your hands.
Now, I can help you find out why this wolf would go against all its natural instincts and come into close contact-- I didn't ask for your help.
Wolves that are healthy don't attack people, Sheriff.
In the whole history of America, there's never been a single case of a healthy wolf killing a human being.
They don't feed on us.
But we've managed to poison, torture, maim or kill almost every single one of them, so let me ask you a question, Sheriff.
Who's the beast ? US OI' them ? ( Doors opening ) Hey, Doc.
What's going on ? My girl Davi.
She didn't sleep in her bed last night.
Her car is missing.
I've looked everywhere, I can't find her anyplace.
Okay, Doc, don't worry, we'll find her.
Man: Davi ! Davi ! Woman: Davi ! Jack: Over here ! (Music plays) Jack: So they covered her up.
Must have been feeling some kind of remorse.
It's a high-powered rifle, maybe a .
30-06.
Probably from somewhere over here.
( Doc crying ) (Music plays) Sophia: You found her.
Are you gonna tell me, or do I have to hear the other kids talking at school ? We found her by the lake, covered by a blanket, shot through the heart.
She was my only real friend in the whole world.
(Music plays) man: Luke.
My sister is dead because of you.
He didn't do anything, Travis.
Trying so hard to take her place, aren't you, Tammy ? Luke: Hey Travis, listen, man, that's-- You left her lying there alone so they could find her.
I wouldn't.
I wouldn't do that.
Someone found me laying there and took me home, okay ? Excuse me ? Everybody listen up for a minute.
I know you probably already heard that one of your classmates, Davi Sokolov, has been killed.
We're gonna find whoever did this.
Until then, we've closed the road around Wolf Lake.
Don't go anywhere in the forest, especially at night.
Stay out of the woods.
Luke, where were you Saturday night ? Just running around.
How come you always come after me, huh ? I think it'd be a good idea for you and I to go down to the station.
Yeah.
See you at home, Sophia.
Luke.
I'm sorry about Davi.
I know she loved you.
Lét v S 90 r Luke Don't tell anyone.
You didn't seem too surprised when we found Davi naked in the woods with a bullet in her heart.
That Jeep outside the cafe, is that yours ? I don't walk to school, man.
Good, so if I look inside, am I gonna find anything of Davi's ? And I'll impound the car if I don't like your answer.
She may have some clothes in the back of my car.
- She may ? - You can't bully him like that, Jack.
Luke, you don't have to say anything.
I-- I can't afford any lawyer.
Don't worry, it's been taken care of.
You have a lawyer.
Around here, it's me.
Uh, my lawyer here tells me that I don't have to talk to you anymore.
Half the town was in the woods looking for her, Luke.
Where were you ? Davi was one of our own.
Doc's kids grew up on my street.
Luke was there when she was shot and you know it.
Look, Jack, if you want to talk to Luke, you're gonna have to talk to me first.
- What are you doing ? - My job.
Who hired you ? Doc called me.
Davi's dad hired you to defend the kid who might've killed her ? (Music plays) Alex: Duke ? Duke ? (Music plays) Why did that wolf jump my fence ? Curiosity.
Don't tell me that.
What does she want with Lily ? Is that why you're afraid ? You think the wolf came for your little girl.
I want Lily to have a normal life, like any kid.
But even here, we're not safe.
A girl's been shot in the woods, wolves are coming into town.
Well, maybe they came to see you.
I feel like I am just standing right at the edge, that the ground is caving in under my feet.
Duke: The medicine bundle I gave you, is it still outside your door ? I took it down-- I'm not a kid anymore, Duke.
I don't believe in those things.
It'll protect you.
I am not gonna lose the life I have, you tell them that.
You remember wolves visiting when you were a little girl ? You marry a good man, a strong man, a fireman.
You have a baby.
You put a picket fence around all of it.
I have to go.
You can't run away from what you are.
You must have known that one day it would all come back.
NO.
When you saw that wolf in your yard ? What did you think ? What was your first thought ? Hannah.
How long have you been standing there ? Not long.
Duke was kind enough to give me a desk to work out of.
Noah Cassidy.
You're the one setting wolves free in the woods.
That's right.
I went by your house.
The animal that left those prints is not one of the ones that we released, I'd like you to know that.
How do you know ? Every animal has a slightly different print.
Your wolf is a female, and very big to leap that fence.
Interesting coincidence, you showing up just when the wolves come into town.
It's very unusual, what's happening.
I promise you, I'm going to find out why.
( High-pitched static ) Things must have changed at the bureau.
Since when do they outfit you guys with all these high-tech toys ? Well, the times here are changing, Duke .
Try over there.
I think I hear a wolf through all the spam static.
Go off that way about 20 feet.
( Beeping ) Hold on, I got him.
Show me how all this stuff works.
These are the two packs competing for territory around wolf lake.
This is the wolf we just located.
This is her path for the last 24 hours, these are her GPS coordinates.
Let's take a look at the other pack.
You see there ? The paths of the two packs seem to be converging.
(Music plays) We have to let this pass.
- Not a chance.
- Luke I loved her.
You loved her ? That's my daughter lying there.
There's a war coming between the families.
The war is already here, old man.
She's lying there right now because they tried to shoot me.
I promised your father I would look after you until you could take your place.
I'm getting too old for war.
We need you to lead now.
I didn't ask for this.
For any of it.
Did you attack that hunter Harvey ? Someone did me a favor.
But I'll get the other one.
No, you won't.
I'm really sorry.
Don't trust that one.
If we lose, the other families will begin to attack the humans and the witch hunt will start all over.
Duke: You have to be careful in these woods.
The people hunted here, but they avoided the woods around the lake.
They said that Wolf Lake was visited by skinwalkers.
Skinwalkers ? Witches who could shapeshift themselves into wolves.
You don't really believe that, do you ? They say that in the beginning, my people sent someone, a shaman, into the forest, to speak to them.
There had to be someone who could go between our world and the world of the skinwalkers, to keep the peace and the balance.
Now that's been handed down to me.
I mean, don't get me wrong.
I respect the fact the native peoples used myths to teach life lessons, but ( chuckling ) Well, people still don't come down here alone, with a moon like that.
What is that ? - Huh? - Oh my God.
(Music plays) Must have just crawled here.
I'm not finding a pulse.
You got your cell phone ? Yeah, it's in the truck.
Hello-- Can you hear me ? Hello ? ( Speaking foreign language ) (Music plays) Did you see that ? Help me get him in the truck.
(Music plays) (Music plays) man: Sophia ? Sophia ? Sophia ? Sophia ? Sophia ? Sophia ! Man: Sophia.
Sophia.
Sophia ! Sophia ! Sophia ! ( Wolves howling ) What are you doing ? It's cold and it's wet and you're out here in this flimsy little thing.
I'm not cold at all.
All right, here's your glasses.
I don't need them anymore.
All right, I'm gonna get you home.
Come on .
Can I talk to you ? Sure.
Talk.
Alone ? YOU You look different.
I feel different.
Something's happening to me.
Maybe you're just trying to be like Davi.
Why did she have to die ? Why ask me ? 'Cause I think you were there.
You think I shot Davi ? Yeah.
So does your daddy, the sheriff.
No, I believe you.
Sophia.
You're gonna have to choose.
You can join us and be free or you can just go home with your safe life-- that way you don't end up with a bullet in your heart.
There are others ? If you're scared, maybe you should stay out of the woods.
How do you know about that ? What about you ? I think you know.
Hannah.
I've come home.
Mom ? Excuse me.
Oh, you have a message, Mr.
Cassidy.
This has been opened.
Oh.
In the future, I'll be sure to seal all messages properly.
I just tried to make a call and the phone in my room just clicked and went dead.
I'll dial it for you.
That's okay.
Thank you.
( Beeping ) ( phone ringing ) woman: Director.
This is Agent Cassidy, is he in ? Director: Yes ? You were right, they're using the real wolves for cover.
The clans are gathering here.
