XIII: The Series s01e05 Episode Script

Training Camp

Previously on XIII" Nobody in the government knows about this place except for me.
I did some checking into Santos.
You know that Ryan Flay was recruited by a company called Transcom which is a CIA front operation right? What you don't know is, he wasn't the only one recruited.
I asked Santos about Ryan Flay and he kept saying shame.
Seamus Seamus O'Neil.
O'Neil was definitely a CIA asset and his intake date was exactly the same as Ryan Flay's.
I don't have to agree with the president's decisions in order to protect his interests.
We believe that he has knowledge, potentially dangerous to the United States.
The data XIII delivered was incomplete.
O'Neil or someone like him might be able to lead him to the other pieces.
These are letters sent to Ryan Flay.
Seamus discussed the mission in detail while he was waiting for a go.
So they wanted to train him with a bunch a mercenaries in a terrorist training camp in Montana.
The CIA sent an operative to a terrorist training camp? Seamus died before he was activated, and Ryan went in his place.
You're telling me that you're Seamus O'Neil? In regards to that mission, yeah.
You are not a terrorist, Ryan! How do we know that? Where did you grow up? Who are your parents? I don't need to rehearse it anymore.
I got my back story down.
They're going to try to trick you.
Thomas Rech is obsessed with family.
Nothing says family like running a mercenary training camp.
Humor me.
I grew up in Tucson, where my parents Alex and Virginia Bryan still live.
Alec and Virginia.
Alec.
Right.
Westville high home of the spartans and then went ooo-rah after graduation.
You are going to be under scrutiny every second of the day.
Physically tested, psychologically manipulated.
Your legend can't be something you've memorized, it has to be reflex.
I'll be ready to go as Kelly Bryan, prepped to answer any questions on my background that rech can give me.
For the record, this level of detail? Is crazy.
This isn't a background check for some civil service desk job.
These guys dig deep, rech vets every one personally.
So he'd have a file on me from when I attended the camp as Seamus O'Neil.
Even though I came in through CIA.
Exactly.
Rech is very thorough and very paranoid.
And in bed with the CIA.
Yeah.
In exchange for training a few agents for special ops, his camp doesn't exist.
And as much as you think this is overkill, it will stand up to everything but a DNA test.
What happens if they run one? With rech's connections and lab time, you're looking at Now, rech may know where Seamus O'Neil went after he left the camp, but he is not going to give up the intel that easily.
Well then we'll have to motivate him.
I think I might have a lead on something.
Rech was a mercenary himself.
He went freelance after special forces, a couple of his buddies double-crossed him killed his wife and daughter in the process.
What happened to the killers? Nobody knows, rech nevercaught up with them.
Now he puts out the word to all of his trainees you find the intel on where these guys are located and I'll pay.
Get out of the car! Let me see your hands! Stay calm and do as we say.
You must be the welcoming committee.
You Kelly Bryan? Your file says you saw some serious action in Iraq.
Yeah, it was a ride.
With the 112? Bravo company.
Easy.
Just need prints.
Sodder city.
112 got fragged pretty good doing sweep and clears.
What was your gunny's name, McQueegan? McGill was the lt.
The gunny was some Mexican kid, I don't remember his name.
He bled a lot.
And the 112 wasn't down Sodder city way you must be thinking Tekrit.
Well I suppose you're right.
The name's Matt.
You come back wrong in the prints, we'll be sending your head back in a box for mother's day.
Finger prints, sir.
Well did I pass? Prints say you're Kelly Bryan.
What do you say? Prep him.
Let's go.
I was a secret agent betrayed by my own people robbed of my face, my memories, my history.
Hidden in my past is a secret that threatens all humanity I search for answers with nothing to hold onto but the tattoo that has become my name I am XIII.
XIII's fallen off the grid.
If he was making any moves that were concerning, agent Jones would tell us about it.
You and I both know that any move that he makes is concerning.
Okay what are you driving at Frank? She's close to him.
That is the point.
Yes, until she crosses the line.
I made it clear to agent Jones that she is not going to let her feelings get in the way of the assignment.
Like the way she did in Green Falls, and Ireland? The president wants her on XIII.
I understand that, but what I want to know is who's on her? Kelly Bryan, you're at bitterroot.
Anything you see here or do at this camp remains in this environment and in your head.
Anyone you encounter that you might come across in the future yeah, they're strangers.
Got it.
Good.
Because if I so much as hear that you even mentioned that you were in the state of Montana this week the head in the box thing? You're a quick study.
This way.
You don't have a written contract.
So I'm going to give you the waiver.
We're not responsible for any injuries or anything else that might occur during your stay.
Copy that.
Rech designed the program based on the arms infiltration mission.
With elements of hand to hand, close combat, small arms, ied instruction and implementation as well as recon and security bypass strategy.
When do I get to go over it with him? You don't.
Rech designed the plan, and I oversee it.
Well if I have questions? Keep them to yourself.
The less you deal with rech, the better.
Let's go.
Yes, can I speak to a detective Barbara Poland, please? Speed, endurance fitness and reflex drills.
A fraction of a second of your assault time or your defensive attack will make a world of a difference.
Bulletproof vests, how much of your weapons training is live fire? All of it, even with a vest it hurts like hell if you get hit.
You got a problem with that? Only if one of your instructors misses.
They don't.
Unless instructed to.
Why would they be instructed to? What are you, Katie Couric? Target down! Go to the next station! Go! Go! Go! Get to the Ridge quick! Move! Don't try to memorize anything, we tailor the experience to your mission requirements.
People who make it through bitterroot tend to stay alive wherever they go afterwards.
Let's get started.
Grab a vest.
* The hand-to-hand training in his file was impressive, wasn't it? Yeah it was.
Not that impressive.
He's better than advertised.
Walk with me.
Skills don't match the file and you don't pick that up? I don't know I don't know doesn't work.
How many times have I told you, keep your eyes open or they or they get cut out.
Yes, sir.
You keep your eyes on him.
You keep digging.
Yes, sir.
Thank you, sir.
* Make it quick.
We flagged him coming through the airport in Helena, on his way to a mercenary training camp.
An Irish arms deal, a mercenary camp, what the hell's he up to? We have to assume he's still following the trail of his past life.
They must do serious background checks at a camp like that.
XIII had help getting inside.
Jones.
If he finds anything that might lead him to the missing part of the file from that memory chip we need to have it.
We need someone inside that camp.
We have that person.
Frank agent Jones is a big help to XIII.
To paraphrase, the friend of my enemy, is my enemy.
I have a feeling your stock is about to plummet very soon.
This is the president.
XIII is in a mercenary training camp in Montana, anything you'd like to tell me about that? Well history repeats itself.
He's looking for answers.
Where hopefully he'll find some that lead to the missing part of the weapon information.
I'm putting my pieces into play.
It would help if I knew more about what this weapon was capable of so I could plan more effectively.
There have been three major advances that change the game of world power.
First, the invention of gunpowder.
Second, the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
And third, the rise of terrorist groups blending into civilian populations.
And this will be the fourth.
And I guarantee you it is that big.
Cover your side of the board, Mr.
president, XIII will lead us to the rest.
Detonator construction is critical.
Doesn't matter if you're using a cell phone, garage door opener, or delay timer.
Mess it up, your ied goes off anyway.
It completes the mission, whether you're dead or not.
You've had fifteen minutes to rig something stable but usable.
Should be all the time you need.
Might actually be all the time you have.
It's good.
It's good.
Tightly packed, which is important.
You have an efficient explosive, shrapnel ratio, this should he seems a little young to be an instructor.
Rech's kid Duke.
He can build and blow up anything.
Or anyone.
Stop, stop.
It'll get the job done if you can get it into place and avoid detection.
Unfortunately concealment might be a problem.
Here's a trick someone taught me.
Using an extra blasting cap and a two inch length of pipe you get better height on your spatter.
Sturdy.
Destructive.
Not a very efficient use of space.
I was in a bit of a rush.
Well your intended target's not gonna wait for you to get it together.
That's a load of crap I was blowing off steam.
With a local woman? We didn't do much talking.
The rules are pretty clear.
No personal contact with the locals.
All right.
Okay.
Did you have a good time? Oh yeah.
That's good.
I think he gets the point.
I don't think you do.
Nobody challenges my authority in this camp.
There's no reason to kill him.
Oh there's a reason for everything I do.
What is the message here?! Duke! Don't break the rules! And if you do? Don't get caught.
And what is your reward for giving a man the benefit of the doubt? Loyalty.
Duke? Vulnerability.
Suspicion! Paranoia! These will save your life every time! Now as for you son, you made a big mistake.
I don't care who you are, I don't care who paid for your training, you make another one, I'll kill ya.
Infirmary.
That's it for now! Pick up the rest tomorrow morning.
Here let me help you.
No, it's good.
That was stupid.
He'll be gunning for ya now.
I couldn't just stand by and watch him kill the man.
A lot of people would have.
I saw you fight today.
Where'd ya get those moves? I spent a few years in Taiwan.
A friend taught me.
What were you doing there? I thought nobody asked questions around here.
Yeah.
Forget it.
But if I were you, I'd keep my head down.
* * Dead.
* * Sir, this isn't training, this is a beating.
He came for an education, and he's getting one.
If he learns anything he won't be able to use it on his mission if they kill him first.
If they do I'll give him his money back.
I asked you to do some digging, find anything interesting? I looked harder into his files and his prints.
Reached out to alternate sources they all checked out.
I'll come up with some other areas to look into.
Yeah you better move your ass, kiddo.
Or he won't be the only one taking a beating.
* * The guy's good.
Most trainees use brute force against their attackers, I've never seen anybody switch up tactics like that guy.
I have.
Drive this to the university lab.
Ask for Dr.
DeFranchesco.
Tell him we need a quick turnaround and to push it to the front of the line.
It will stand up to everything but a DNA test.
If they run one? You've got eighteen to twenty four hours.
Thanks for meeting me Detective Cohen.
I don't have a lot of time.
What are we meeting about, agent Jones? An old case of yours, a homicide.
Victims were Suzie and Alice Rech.
What about it? I know the husband was a mercenary of some kind, but beyond that I'm getting closed doors.
Now you know how I felt.
The killers were picked up by a couple of marshalls and that's the last I heard of them.
Every request for information went unanswered.
Any idea why? No, usually you feds give a reason.
This time not a word.
You think they were hiding something? Look, what are you asking me for? The file's classified outside of my security clearance.
Stinks for you doesn't it? I found out something about one of the perps.
A Todd Curney.
He rolled on his partner.
Partner went to prison, was killed there by a guard.
Any idea where Curney is now? I gotta get back to work agent Jones.
Detective this is really important.
Rumour has it he was put in Witness Protection.
Witsec.
Of course.
Thank you.
Thanks.
Saw you on the course today.
Seems like you've been watching me on the course quite a bit.
Yeah well your fighting style certainly stands out from everyone else.
Thanks for the compliment.
Yeah you don't stick to a singular defense.
You mix rare martial arts with street tactics.
It's not unusual to me.
I know lots of guys who do the same.
I don't.
At least not like that.
In fact there's only one other guy I've seen who thought outside the box like you did.
Seamus O'Neil.
Oh yeah, what was he like? Oh he's a total sociopath.
Yeah.
Kind of guy you just couldn't trust.
People here hated him.
He survived the training, but that guy should have slept with one eye open.
Never heard from him again after he left for his mission.
Well why would you? I suppose you're right.
Why would you? You don't know what his mission was? Where people go isn't something we're told.
I guess someone must know, like rech.
I wouldn't advise askin' him.
You know, I think he secretly likes me.
Rech liked Matt.
You saw what he did to him in IED class.
Do you always call him Rech? Good work on the course today.
I'm here.
What do you got for me? Okay, two guys killed the wife.
One's dead, the other one Todd Curney was disappeared by the government.
Witsec.
What did he have to trade? I'm looking into it.
Curney was a mercenary that served with rech.
He was trying to kill rech and got the wife instead? No idea, but his record's full of attempted homicides and aggravated assaults, so when he wasn't working as a merch he was an enforcer.
Where did they move him? The high security file is locked up tight I don't even know where to start.
Well if he needs a new name Kelly Brian's gonna be available sooner than later.
They're running the DNA.
Yeah.
Look, I'm hopin' what we're lookin' for is in Rech's office.
I'm goin' in tonight.
No, listen to me, it's too dangerous okay? Just, just give me a couple more hours.
I'll call if I find anything.
Okay.
* * Whack * * Irina.
What the hell are you doing here? I have a strange feeling we're looking for the same information.
How'd you get inside? You're not the only one with Scantex.
Sheridan.
What did you find? Sorry, I don't play well with others.
It's never too late to start learning.
You fire that and the whole camp's gonna come runnin'.
By the time anyone gets here I'll be gone.
And all they will find is your dead body.
Don't flatter yourself, you're not that good.
Better than you.
Stumbling around in the dark with no clue what you're looking for.
If you were better than me, you wouldn't have that now, would you? Man down! We got a man down! When I say form up, you don't miss a breath.
Screw up again, soldier, you won't be breathing.
Now, being prepared to die for a mission, isn't heroic.
And we don't do heroism here we do survival.
Now we know each and everyone one of you and what you're capable of.
We knew that before you set foot in this camp.
But we also know what will break you.
Muscle memory! Repetition! Your finger coiled around a trigger or a throat a split second faster.
That will save your life! Not your principals.
Not your cause.
Not your God.
Now one of you won't make it that far.
One of you will never see the outside of this camp again.
Because you have betrayed me.
Betrayal is death.
But like hounds on a scent we are closing in.
And I promise you I will cut you in half.
Run them hard! Extend training to fifteen hundred hours, no morning mess.
Cut out their water rations, then light fire and psych ops.
Today is going to be a very bad day.
You know where you're supposed to be so let's move! Results, back from the lab.
Jones.
Can't talk long.
Neither can I.
Irina's here.
Doing what? Looking for the same thing I am.
Where I go.
Where I you don't sound good.
Uh, deprivation drills.
Counter interrogation.
Injections.
Laudnim, GHB, and the other one.
Ryan, are you compromised? Rech knows someone broke into his office, but he doesn't know it's me.
They're inside the window it's time to get you outta there.
We'll send in a team to get rech later, get the intel some other way.
No, there is no other way.
You send in a team it's gonna be like another Waco.
If rech goes, the intel about my past goes with him.
What have you got for me? I think I finally got a witsec location on Todd Curney.
Where? Oregon.
Give me the address.
I have to make sure it's really Curney.
It'll take me 2 hours, can you wait? I don't have much choice.
* * You and Kelly got a problem? I just want to finish my training.
I don't want to cause any trouble.
If there's something up with Kelly then maybe he's the one causing trouble.
For all of us.
I saw him in his truck a couple of hours ago.
What was he doin' there? He was on a cell phone.
Giordino: Take a look at this.
Problems with Jones and XIII.
Brian Fitzgerald, director at witsec.
He reported his ID card missing an hour ago.
* Jones lifted it from him.
She used it to access secure files.
My agent saw her leaving area that housed your agents are not authorized to be following Ms.
Jones.
She is illegally tapping Witness Protection.
She's looking for intel on a man named Tom Rech.
He runs a mercenary training camp in Montana.
Which is where XIII is right now.
I'm shutting her down.
I want to debrief her.
This is domestic, it's not your play.
Most of the people who come out of those camps end up on foreign soil.
I want a full report.
Thank you, sir.
Ahhhhhhh! Bring him down! The Pentagon.
So proud of their enhanced interrogation techniques.
Well let me tell you something son, within the hour you will pray to be waterboarded.
Just tell him why you're here.
My name is Kelly Brian! We tried to trace your call you made.
Someone tried very hard not to let us.
It was my employer.
I was just getting an update on my mission.
It looks like they'll have to find a replacement.
You tape that mouth shut.
I told him to stick to soft tissue damage and psychotropic manipulation for the first two hours, but I don't really see any point in being careful anymore.
You're leaving on a slab tomorrow morning anyway.
Get creative.
But keep him alive.
Duke you did a hell of a job flushing this traitor out.
So tomorrow, I've decided to let you finish him off.
It would be my honor, sir.
Good.
He's all yours, son.
You know what to do.
I'm sorry you're involved in this.
Shut up.
I'm not tryin' to harm your old man.
I'm only looking for more information, I just need more time.
That's definitely something you don't have.
It's about Seamus.
You don't have to do this, Duke.
Why didn't you tell me? Tell you what? DNA doesn't lie, Seamus! Well considering the kind of man I was I didn't think you'd really want to help me.
You were the only thing that kept me goin'.
I don't understand.
Stop with the lies already! I told you, I know! Duke, look at me my hair, look this discoloured part.
Look! After I left here, I got shot.
It grazed my left temporal lobe, and I lost my memory.
They changed my face for a mission.
I was just tryin' to find out who the hell I was, Duke.
That's all.
Now, I couldn't just walk in here and ask.
I lied.
I lied.
To trick you.
To see how'd you react.
You aren't the man I told you about.
You're the closest thing I've had to a real family in a very long time.
Well now, I'm just askin' for some help.
GPS has her moving too fast to be on foot.
Pick me up at the corner of 18th and Kay.
It's boothed.
Untraceable.
You were supposed to call me three hours ago.
What's going on? I ran into some complications.
How complicated are we talking? The situation's stabilized.
Temporarily.
I was about to call in a raid.
No, don't press the panic button.
I'm making the call from rech's phone.
Is he there with you? Well not yet.
Are you sure you can handle this? That all depends on what you got for me.
* * Well, well I guess I'm going to have to revaluate my relationship with my son.
I was just comin' to see you.
About what? Your funeral arrangements? Questions I have about Seamus O'Neil.
And you're gonna give me the answers.
And then, you're gonna let me walk out of this camp.
Unharmed.
Well you got balls kid, I'll give ya that.
You got exactly five seconds to say something that gets my attention.
Or I'll do something that gets yours.
Todd Curney and Brian Wilkins, broke into your home, one night in September, five years ago, looking for you.
And you weren't there.
But your wife, and your daughter were.
They entered from a side door, Wilkins took out your wife first, but not before torturing her for your whereabouts.
But she wouldn't talk.
Post-mortem said she bled out slowly and painfully.
How do you know this? At some point, your daughter woke up and went downstairs in time to see her mother die.
Then they tortured and killed her.
She had just turned six.
Curney rolled on Wilkins, who died in prison.
Curney went into Witness Protection, where the government is still protecting him.
Todd Curney is now Jordan White.
Seven fifty eight.
Thirteenth street, Cincinnati.
Now I'm supposed to believe you? You give me an email address and I'll have surveillance photos to you in five minutes.
There it is.
You have visual confirmation.
Quid pro quo.
All right what is it you want to know? Seamus O'Neil, what kind of training did he receive? Corporate infiltration.
High tech security bypass.
Alarms.
Closed-circuit systems.
Physical perimeter.
Any idea what he was after? They don't give us that kind of intel.
Take a wild guess.
All I know is it was some kind of secured intel extraction.
We also trained him in stealth assault.
Silent termination if necessary.
If someone spotted him he had to take them out quickly.
Quietly.
CIA send him to you? The benefactor chose to remain anonymous.
Where was his mission gonna take place? Costa Verde.
You learn your Spanish in Costa Verde? You don't learn that accent in a book.
You crossed the line.
Yes, sir.
Your actions compromised the integrity of the entire witness protection program.
I didn't feel there was any integrity to the files I accessed not your call to make! I did what I felt was necessary under the circumstances.
The circumstances were that you arranged for XIII to be in a mercenary training camp.
Yes I did, in order to find out more about incomplete information that ex-president Sheridan is desperate to have.
And I thought that's what we were after, sir.
That is based on the assumption that he is actually telling you the truth.
Let me make something perfectly clear.
This is not the Jones and XIII show.
You work for me.
You will brief me on every move either one of you makes.
Well then, let me brief you on my move at the witsec office, sir.
Would you like to know what I found? What you found out is not important.
Your disregard for protocol is the issue.
They were CIA.
The men who tortured and murdered Rech's family.
Were CIA.
You have no proof of that.
I saw the files, sir.
Agent Jones.
You are not fresh off the bus from Nebraska are you? This is a very difficult business.
And as such, there are times when we are entrusted to make difficult decisions.
To protect the safety and greater good of this nation.
The greater good? Tell me what part of torturing and murdering a little girl and her mother made this country safer? Agent Jones, you're suspended indefinitely.
Your security clearance is revoked.
You will surrender your weapon and your badge.
All right, over to the Ridge! So you're just gonna leave? I have to.
You know I think Rech wished he'd been there when my mom and sister were killed.
Even if it meant he'd died as well.
I guess in a way he did.
What about you? You just gonna let him drag you into the grave with him? It's not like I've got a lot of options.
You know who you are.
That's more than I've got goin'.
Nothin's stoppin' you from just walkin' away.
You said that before, six years ago.
What's going on in here? It's complicated.
There are three surveillance cameras for every square foot of this building.
So you can make whatever you want disappear from them.
Did my expedition yield anything useful? You familiar with ranier garehart? The industrialist? He hired Seamus O'Neil out from under the CIA's nose.
And based on the photos you took of the camp, the funds for his training came from an offshore account, which I traced back to him.
So what about him? I have a feeling he's Sheridan's mysterious friend.
Now if we get to him no more begging for scraps from Sheridan.
And the problem is? According to the research, he's currently in China, and Boston, Belgium, Bolivia, Geneva, all at this moment.
Garehart doesn't like to be found.
Well lucky for me I've got an entire bureaucracy at my disposal.
See? Those cameras won't be such a problem then.
I'll be in touch.
I hope it paid off.
My mission was corporate intrusion.
We were goin' in to steal some sort of intel.
Where did they send you? Costa Verde.
What was worth stealing from a corporation way down there? I dunno.
Maybe you could probe the homeland files, see what was going on in Costa Verde on the radar from five years ago.
I don't think I'm gonna be probing any files related to the United States government any time in the near future why not? Because I don't work for them anymore.
Amos? Found out about me accessing the witsec files.
I really appreciate that you put yourself on the line for me.
After what I found out, I'd do it again.
Todd Curney and his friend.
They were CIA.
That's who bought Curney a pass.
Tom Rech should be cancelling that pass right about now if that's any consolation.
CIA Witness Protection for child murderers.
Sending agents down to mercenary training camps for corporate intrusions in South America.
I just wonder what part of the sales pitch I responded to when they recruited me.
That assumes they were telling you the truth at the time.
At least I'm getting closer to finding out what that was.
I couldn't have done it without you.
No, you couldn't.
How you feelin' about South America this time of year? Do you ever stop? Never.
Costa Verde was in the middle of a revolution when I was last there.
It's still unstable and volatile.
On the plus side, there's no rules and regs to worry about.
For you or for me? Well I'm going to Costa Verde, but I don't know what I'm going to be walking into.
But I'm goin'.
Why don't you just say it? Is it really that hard? Well, I need you.
Okay.
Then I'll think about it.
