The Voice US (2011) s07e09 Episode Script

The Battles, Part 3

1 Daly: [ Echoing .]
The battle starts right now.
Last week on "the voice" I'm a survivor I'm gonna make it I will survive yeah! Keep on surviving Daly: The heated battle rounds began.
I'm amazed I'm amazed the performances were the best our coaches had ever seen Wow.
That may be one of the most perfect vocals I have ever heard.
Both of you guys should have record deals.
Daly: Making their decisions of who to keep I wish I could put you guys in a blender and make one person.
The winner of this battle is I don't know.
Daly: The most agonizing God.
Daly: They have ever faced.
The winner of this battle is Adam: Chris.
Blake: James.
Gwen: Sugar.
Pharrell: Luke.
Daly: With incredible artists available to steal Oh, no, you didn't! Our coaches fought hard for the ones they wanted.
[ Groans .]
I'm the coach for you.
Please don't say no to me twice.
Whoa! Yes! Daly: Pharrell gave two deserving artists a second chance using both of his steals.
I'm totally impressed by the artists this season.
I didn't expect it to be as dramatic as it is.
Daly: Blake and Gwen each used a steal Unbelievable.
Thank you while Adam has yet to add anyone new to his team.
I got two steals, so I'm waiting to be inspired and then grab them up.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Whoa! I knew he would do that to me, but you did it to me?! Oh, it's on now.
Blake: We got two new coaches with two different styles, and it changes this game altogether.
Daly: Tonight, 12 more artists take the stage with a spot on their coaches' teams at stake.
It's go time.
Daly: To help prepare them, our coaches enlisted some of the biggest names in music.
Gwen invited her husband, lead singer of the multi-platinum band bush, Gavin rossdale.
Pharrell brought in grammy award-winning superstar Alicia keys.
Y'all are standing there like background singers.
And y'all are stars.
[ Sighs .]
It is overwhelming.
Blake enlisted the help of the chart-topping country band little big town.
And Adam recruited music legend Stevie nicks.
I think it'd be more fun for you if you turn and look at each other.
The way you love me is frightening daly: The artists have to deliver.
I think you better knock knock, knock, knock, knock, knock on wood whoo! Daly: And our coaches will do whatever it takes to steal the artists they want.
I can see your halo I don't know how I can't have you on my team now.
That could make it not happen.
Daly: The battle rounds continue All the girls stomp your feet like this Whoo! [ Laughs .]
That's not fair.
Daly: Right now.
Let's check in with our coaches backstage at universal studios Hollywood.
Okay, listen, guys.
To win this show, you got to upset Adam.
I mean, that's really what drives me.
He's, like, so competitive.
Sometimes I get a little bit worried about upsetting him.
No, no, no, no, no.
Keep that going.
That's very important.
And you're already doing a great job of it, by the way.
You try to act like you're a nice guy.
[ Laughs .]
But you have slipped in there many times and yanked the rug out from under him with the blinds and now stealing artists from him.
I mean, it kills his soul, and killing his soul is what gives me life.
What's the motivational force behind him being hurt? I can't relate to you not understanding [ Both laugh .]
Not wanting to hurt his feelings.
You just keep doing what you're doing.
I love you for it, okay? Okay.
Okay.
Perfect.
Perfect.
Thank you, Blake.
Thank you.
All right, I'm getting a special latte.
[ Laughs .]
Y'all got the stuff that I like in there? Woman: Of course.
Okay.
Daly: While our coaches head to their chairs, let's look at Adam's first battle pairing of the night.
35-year-old Damien from Los Angeles, California, versus 31-year-old Kelli Douglas from Dallas, Texas.
Damien, a tsa officer, came to "the voice" after surviving a life-threatening ordeal.
Guy just decided he wanted to come and shoot tsa employees.
One of my co-workers was killed.
After the shooting, it made me want to pursue my music career even more.
To be my sunshine Daly: His heartfelt performance during the blind auditions moved all four coaches.
Adam: The possibilities with your voice are endless.
In the way that we said yes to you, I'm asking for a yes Oh, my God from you.
Adam.
Yes! Daly: Single mother Kelli Douglas came to "the voice" after leaving a teaching career to pursue music.
Kelli: I want my son to know he can go for whatever it is he wants to go for.
I'm so in love Daly: Her soulful performance of "Danny's song" turned three chairs.
Everything is gonna be all right You were ner-vous.
Oh, my gosh.
And we'll work on that, Kelli Douglas.
Adam.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Adam: Hey.
Hi.
Hey.
Kelli Douglas.
Thank you for turning around for me.
Are you kidding me? You turned around first, and I was so nervous, and I really, really appreciate that.
It's just the beginning.
Good to see you, man.
Come here.
Thank you so much.
Hey, man.
I'm super excited.
This is my dear friend Stevie nicks.
Damien: Right now, I work for tsa, so when I walked into the room and you see Stevie nicks sitting alongside Adam Nice to meet you.
To me, it's an indescribable honor.
It's really nice to meet you.
My dad's not gonna believe it.
Thank you.
I can't wait to tell him.
Well, hello to your dad.
Thank you.
These pairings that I made this season were impossible.
For this, I need to see some chops.
I need to see how you guys handle some adversity.
This is gonna be a real test.
Yeah.
This is one of my closest friends.
Yeah.
Oh, man.
Great.
Now I feel even worse.
Adam: Gave them "knock on wood," Carla Thomas, Otis Redding.
Never been done on the show.
It's a great old classic.
Kelli and Damien are both very soulful singers.
It could be a showstopping moment.
I don't wanna lose this good thing Damien's passionate.
He can kind of wear his heart on his sleeve.
I said it's like thunder thunder lightning And Kelli's a little more mysterious.
The way you love me is frightening I like both of those things, so we'll see what prevails.
'Cause your love is better than any love Mnh.
I don't know if that's right.
The fun part is figuring it out.
It's the people who enjoy themselves the most up there that have the most success on the show.
Okay.
To me, the biggest challenge in this song is the performance area, because I think this is going to make me step out of my box.
Think I better knock Uh On wood I forgot I forgot where to come in right there.
That "knock, knock, knock" thing is really important.
Oh.
I think you better knock on wood That is what brings you in at the right place.
The great r&B stars, they all had that really good timing.
Kelli has that, but she needs to stop worrying about everything else and just concentrate on her singing.
You guys can bring the house down.
All I will say is, by tomorrow, you know, you got to eat this for dinner tonight, you got to wake up and have it for breakfast.
Damien and Kelli are both naturals.
They both have the same kind of raw ability.
There's more work to be done, but it's gonna be a really great performance, so it's gonna be hard on me.
Daly: As their battle nears, Damien and Kelli meet with Adam and Stevie nicks for a final rehearsal.
I said it's like thunder thunder lightning lightning the way you love me is frightening I think you better knock Got to have a plan.
Kelli: This song is tough to me because everything's so quick, and I'm just trying I'm probably thinking too hard.
I am a little nervous.
Doing a duet is not something that I'm used to doing.
I actually really wanted to be an r&B singer when I was little.
I think that you, Kelli, should really listen to all the great r&B hit songs.
Those girls were definitely having fun.
Yeah.
And it'd be a great inspiration for you.
Stevie nicks was able to give me a clear picture of how I need to execute the song.
I was a teacher, but I don't want to go back to teaching, so I'm gonna have to do a little bit of studying so I can channel that era.
I can't do what you can do, Damien.
I'm not saying don't embellish, but it's got to become part of your DNA.
It doesn't even matter what you're saying.
I was surely, unh That's when my ears perk up, when I hear someone singing real solid and real nice.
And then they throw in a little embellishment.
And I'm like, "oh, and they can do that, too.
" If you want to be like other-level great with this, that's what it's got to be.
Damien: I'm really grateful that I'm on Adam's team.
He gives me genuine advice from his heart, and I'm definitely gonna take that and I'm gonna run with it.
I think it'd be more fun for you if you actually were able to turn and look at each other.
Any love I know Kelli: I said it's like thunder whoo! Thunder lightning lightning Adam: Damien and Kelli, they need to just get lost in it and sing the song with confidence baby This battle is gonna be like watching the great r&B duos, like Marvin gaye and tammi.
Whoo-o-o Damien and Kelli cannot go.
They must stay.
I will personally come back and steal them.
Daly: It's the night of their battle, and Damien and Kelli make their way to the stage.
Damien: I'm battling somebody that I've become close to, but at the same time am gonna do my best to make it all the way to the end.
I'm 35 years old, and it's time to move forward.
Kelli: Tonight, I just need to perform without stage fright so I can give my son a better life, and I want him to always know that he can pursue whatever gifts he has.
Entering now from team Adam, the soulful Los Angeles tsa officer, Damien [ Cheers and applause .]
Whoo! Versus the Texas teacher with a powerful voice, Kelli Douglas! [ Cheers and applause .]
That's your mom! Whoo-hoo! Aww.
Hey, sexy.
Hey.
[ Cheers and applause .]
The battle starts now.
I don't wanna lose this good thing, baby that I got 'cause if I do, eh I would surely surely lose a lot oh, 'cause your love, ah is better than any love I know I said it's like thunder thunder you know it's like lightning ooh, lightning the way you love me is frightening I think you better knock on wood, baby yeah, yeah, ah I'm not superstitious about you about what? But I can't take no chance you got me spinning, baby spinning, baby darling, I'm in a trance, yeah hey, 'cause your love is better than any love I know I said it's like thunder thunder ooh, lightning ooh, lightning the way you love me is frightening I think you better knock on wood, baby baby yeah yeah, yeah, yeah it ain't no secret, this woman of what I do baby, ow! Damien: she fills my love in cups and she got me seeing she really sees that, that, that I, I, that I get enough Hey! Just one touch from you, baby from you, baby you know it means so much I said it's like thunder thunder you know it's like lightning ooh, lightning the way you love me is frightening I think you better knock knock, knock, knock, knock, knock on wood, baby yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah you better knock oh, I'm gonna knock knock on wood on wood yeah [ Cheers and applause .]
Daly: And that is how you battle! Whoo! Yes! Kelli Douglas and Damien in a fight for team Adam! [ Cheers and applause .]
Adam, tough one coming up.
Let's see if your fellow coaches can't help you.
We'll start with you, Blake.
I think this is gonna come down to just a matter of taste for you, Adam, because Damien has this explosive voice, and he can jump out there with it and do all these tricks and things with such accuracy.
And Kelli has this very smooth, very warm voice that's not as explosive.
It's two different types of singers, you know? Thank you, Blake.
Pharrell? Pharrell: It's tough.
Damien, you were just singing so effortlessly.
It took me immediately right back to the late '60s.
Like that ah, ah, ah, ah When you were doing that, I was just like, "this guy's like a straight-up soul singer.
" But then you have Kelli.
Like he said, you have this smooth, amazing tone.
I just felt like you're reincarnated from the '60s or something.
You guys are really honestly really good singers.
Daly: Thank you, pharrell.
Thank you, pharrell.
Gwen Stefani, what'd you think? Gwen: I have to be honest.
I was so distracted by your body, that I was like [ Laughter .]
Thank you, Gwen.
[ Laughs .]
You look so Blake: Ah, dreams do come true right here on "the voice," don't they? [ Laughter .]
Sorry.
Go ahead.
You are so gorgeous, but maybe it's not, like, the perfect song for you, so it was getting overpowered a little bit by him.
But you're so talented and natural, and you had that, so that was overpowering that.
[ Laughter .]
I'll take that.
You're in love with Kelli Douglas.
[ Laughter .]
Oh, but no, let's just get kind of serious for a second.
We worked really hard on this, and, you know, Damien, the explosion that Blake was talking about happened, and it was pretty hard to deny.
And, Kelli, I wanted you to step up to this, and so I'm I'm proud of you for doing that.
This whole song is all pocket, and there was not one moment where either one of you guys were off.
I told you guys, if you don't have fun performing this song, you're in a lot of trouble, and you did exactly that.
I really am so proud of the both of you.
I have to make a decision I don't want to make.
That's the reality.
All right, Adam.
It's time.
We need to know, who is the winner of this battle? The winner of this battle Is Damien.
Damien wins it for team Adam, moves on to the knockouts! Congratulations, Damien! Adam: Damien became immersed in the song and didn't question himself for one second.
Congratulations, brother.
Damien killed it, and that's the mark of a real pro.
Your voice is amazing.
Damien: Being on team Adam means a lot.
It's like my dream is slowly coming to reality.
I'm just praying that it won't end any time soon.
Daly: All right, coaches, let me remind you, Kelli Douglas is available to steal.
Kelli, anything you'd like to say to your coach? Thank you, Adam, for turning around at the blinds.
I've enjoyed myself, I've learned a lot, and I thank you for your expertise.
Daly: A big thanks, everybody.
Kelli Douglas.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Come here.
Come here.
Come here.
Thank you.
You did an amazing job.
Gwen: She's got a great voice.
I just think because I only have one steal left, I have to be so picky.
It was a good experience, and I'm glad that I did it.
I'm just gonna go home and continue to work on my music.
She needed to go a little more crazy.
He got lost in the song.
He was killing me.
He was like, ah-h-h ah, ah, ah, ah That's why he took it.
Daly: Coming up The battles are just heating up Ohhh halo I need your love I need your time Daly: And our coaches are floored.
They're so cute! Daly: And later Whoa! We got a steal! A steal gets our coaches fired up.
[ Laughs .]
I love your spirit.
I love your attitude.
Putting you two together was never a good idea.
I solemnly swear, you're so unique, I think you can win this freakin' thing.
Thank you! [ Laughs .]
Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Let's head over to Gwen and her adviser, husband and rocker Gavin rossdale.
I'm excited that we're sitting here.
It's like a surreal moment.
It is surreal.
Gwen: For the battle rounds, I brought in my husband, Gavin rossdale, from the band bush.
He's an amazing musician, songwriter.
He does everything from choosing what the set's gonna look like on a stage to the set list.
I was kind of nervous about it because we've never done anything outside of, like, make out and have kids.
I'm really pumped up.
This is gonna be fun.
Yeah.
Daly: Here's a look at Gwen's battle pairing.
18-year-old jessie pitts from Birmingham, Alabama, versus 20-year-old Ryan sill from sterling, Virginia.
Jessie overcame a childhood injury and discovered her love of music.
Jessie: In order to recover, I had to scrub every night.
It was painful, but I was just happy to be alive.
I was a happy kid.
So many stories Daly: Her emotional performance during her blind audition got two chairs to turn.
Your voice is like a bowl of lucky charms Marshmallows only.
I loved how you could wiggle your way up into these other little notes.
I think I'm gonna choose Gwen.
Oh, my God! Daly: Ryan followed in his father's footsteps and went to college to be an engineer.
Ryan: I was also in an a cappella group.
I started realizing that engineering was not the path for me.
I'm gonna give all my secrets away Daly: His compelling performance moved two coaches.
I would love to work with you.
You surprised me with some of your high notes.
I'm gonna go with Gwen.
Oh, my God! [ Cheers and applause .]
This is Gavin rossdale.
Nice to meet you.
Hey, how's it going? Ryan sill.
Nice to meet you.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Oh, this is gonna be awesome.
Jessie: They're the cutest couple ever Gwen Stefani and Gavin rossdale.
I've jammed out to his songs in my car, as well as Gwen's, so having both of their advice, it's an honor.
I'm so excited for this.
Gwen: So, you probably want to know why I put you guys together, right? Yeah.
You had, like, similar pop sensibility.
Your voice is stronger, and your style is, like, delicate.
But I think your voices are gonna go really nice together.
I need your love I need your time I gave them Ellie goulding's "I need your love.
" I thought that Ryan was gonna think that I chose this song to favor jessie, but it's a love song, so it can work for a girl and a guy.
And I know that he wants to be a pop singer.
I need your love I need your time when everything's wrong Gavin: Jessie you can feel her sensitivity.
She's very magnetic.
She can draw us in.
I need to be free with you tonight Gwen: Wow.
Ooh.
Wow.
Honestly, I have tears in my eyes.
Really? I literally had, like, tears in my eyes.
I was, like, so I'm getting them again.
I was, like, so, like, happy for them.
Your voices sound so good together, but I'm gonna be interested to see how you guys work together on the stage.
'Cause it's awkward.
You don't even really know each other, right? I mean, just a little but.
No, we're actually in love, so We're actually best friends.
Oh.
I'm just kidding.
No, I'm just kidding.
Oh, my God.
I was like, "I called it!" No.
[ Laughs .]
We make it seem that way, though.
Yeah, you complement each other really well, and you can lean on each other because you, Ryan, project a little bit more.
And one thing that jessie does have is I really feel the words.
'Cause it's really desperate.
I need it, I need it, I need it.
Yeah.
And you're dripping with that.
Our goal is to just be so good that one of us has to get stolen.
Yeah.
That's a good goal to have.
Daly: With their battle approaching, jessie and Ryan meet with Gwen and Gavin for one last rehearsal.
I take a deep breath every time I pass your door what I mean to you do I belong? I try to fight this but I know I'm not that strong Is that harmony a different harmony? We changed a few things.
It sounded weird 'cause it was a bit quieter, and it kind of drops off a lot.
Don't disappear too much at the end.
Yeah.
Just 'cause he drops away doesn't mean we want you to drop away, too.
Jessie: One of the biggest challenges for me on this song is gonna be singing out so I can match Ryan's volume and projection.
Ryan, I feel like in your body language, you're just a little bit stiff.
I would like to help you to not be put in a category of being in a boy band only.
Then you do that chest stuff.
Yeah, yeah.
I do that a lot.
Gavin told me that I had kind of boy-bandish moves, and I think that definitely stems from being in an a cappella group and kind of a ca-bopping around to the beat.
It's a dance song, right? Yeah.
So it's also like anthemic sounding.
I don't even know how you dance.
Not much.
I can learn, though.
See? Positive.
This guy is, like If there's a way that you could go [ Vocalizing .]
And you move a little bit to the beat.
You can look out to the audience, as well, because you're bringing them in.
Gavin: And also, jessie, you know, that's the perfect time to make sure you're looking dead out into the audience and choose someone to find.
It just helps.
That's what's really good and what Gwen is amazing at live.
If you do that with an audience, they're gonna follow you.
I need your lo-o-o-o-o-ve Whoo! Gwen: If Ryan can look a lot more relaxed on stage and get the body to go with the voice, I'm hoping he's gonna shock me that he has that in him.
I feel so high When I look at jessie, I just see, like, a sparkle, but she's not straight-ahead, like, pop girl.
She has an edginess, too, that I really like.
This is gonna be an exciting performance.
I think this one's gonna just come down to whoever makes me feel like they have potential to be a star.
It's gonna make me cry.
[ Chuckles .]
Daly: It's the night of their performance, and jessie and Ryan prepare for battle.
Just think about the music, the song.
Think about your guys' chemistry that you had, and just be in the moment of the song.
Just relax.
Relax your body.
Loosey-goosey.
Yeah.
Loose.
Loosey-goosey.
Loose and just feel the music.
Congratulations.
Have fun.
Thank you.
We will.
I'm so proud of you guys.
I'll see you out there.
Let's do it.
You ready? I took a year off of school to pursue my musical dream, and right now, I'm living it, and I don't want to give this up.
Jessie: I work at a record label back home, and I'm constantly seeing other people chase after their dreams.
This is my time, and I'm gonna take advantage of that.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Daly: Still to come Hold me in your arms daly: More incredible performances Do I do look how they shine for you daly: Have our coaches competing for a steal.
[ Cheers and applause .]
We got another steal! Your voices are both so beautiful and powerful.
You guys slayed the dragon and then slapped it in the face to make sure it knew it was dead.
[ Chuckles .]
Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Entering now from team Gwen, the inspiring 18-year-old indie artist from Alabama, jessie pitts [ Cheers and applause .]
Versus the ex-engineering student from Virginia now pursuing music, Ryan sill! [ Cheers and applause .]
Whoo! Ready? I'm ready.
You're gonna kill it, right? Let's do it.
Let the battle begin.
I need your love I need your time when everything's wrong, you make it right I feel so high I come alive I need to be free with you tonight I need your love oh, oh, oh, oh, oh I take a deep breath every time I pass your door I know you're there, but I can't see you anymore and that's the reason you're in the dark I've been a stranger ever since we fell apart and I feel so helpless here watch, my eyes are filled with fear tell me, do you feel the same? Hold me in your arms again I need your love I need your time when everything's wrong, you make it right I feel so high I come alive I need to be free with you tonight now I'm dreaming will I ever find you now? I walk in circles but I'll never figure out what I mean to you do I belong? I try to fight this but I know I'm not that strong all the tears, all the lies I've been trying to make a change now my eyes are open I need your love I need your time when everything's wrong you make it right I feel so high I come alive I need to be free, yeah I need your lo-o-o-o-o-ve I need your lo-o-o-o-o-ve [ Cheers and applause .]
Daly: Ryan and jessie in a battle for team Gwen! [ Cheers and applause .]
They're so cute! Daly: Nice job, you two.
Coach Gwen's standing up.
I love you guys! Daly: You look like you're about to cry.
We're gonna start with Blake.
Man, Ryan, your your voice is so, like The pocket, it just cuts through like a razor.
I mean, every note just lands exactly where it's supposed to be.
His pitch.
His pitch is perfect.
Pitch is perfect.
But, man, I got to praise jessie here, too, because she has such a unique voice, and to try to fit it into that style of a song, it it may have been I'm just guessing More of a challenge for you.
And, man, I thought you did a hell of a job.
Thank you.
Crap, man, I'd probably vote for jessie on that one.
Daly: There you go.
Thank you, Blake.
Thank you so much.
Pharrell, what'd you think? Man, I mean, that's, like, the most dramatic performance that we've seen thus far this whole entire season.
They were standing all close to each other.
Yeah.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Thank you.
Like, I know your mom and dad are here, but I was like I was like, "wow, are they, like, totally gonna make out on the stage?" It was such a dramatic moment, I'm commending you.
And I mean that in a super-positive way, mom and dad.
But I do have to say that [ Cheers and applause .]
Jessie, yes, you have, like, that Fluffy, powdery voice, but a song like this, Ryan's voice was super cutting through.
But I feel like the song is suited for someone like him.
I think I would have chosen Ryan.
I-I would like to respectfully disagree with Blake.
Respectfully, Blake.
[ Laughter .]
That's news already.
With a little shred The last shred of respect I have for you, I'm gonna use it right now.
[ Laughter .]
It's an Ellie goulding song, so actually I thought the opposite of what Blake thought.
I thought that that was much more suited for jessie and less suited for Ryan.
You're disagreeing with me and pharrell on that.
Okay, fine.
Pharrell, too.
I disagree, respectfully, with pharrell, too.
I think that the song was was teed up for jessie, because when you listen to Ellie goulding, you can strike some sort of comparison it's a female artist.
And Ryan seemed like that was a bigger challenge for him because it's a female vocal, it's very different than what he's used to singing, I can guarantee you that.
And I thought, all of that being said, that he was the one that prevailed, so She really does have, like, that angelic tone.
You really do.
Absolutely.
Thank you.
I disagree less with you and more with more with Blake, actually.
[ Laughter .]
Okay.
Shutting up.
Allow me to clarify that.
Daly: Thank you, coaches.
I'm not sure that helped you, Gwen, but you do have [ laughter .]
The final decision.
Gwen: You know what? Working with you two really touched my heart, and it really inspired me, because both of you were open to trying anything.
Me and Gavin both, we just had a great time working with you.
I have to tell you, Ryan, your attitude is just beyond amazing.
It's very infectious.
Thank you.
And and with jessie, what I love about you is what pharrell's saying.
I love your uniqueness, you know? I love your spirit.
I love your sparkliness.
You have such a great feeling about you.
Thank you so much.
I love you both so much, and this is really devastating.
I have to pick somebody, and it's really hard for me, and you really touched me in my life, and thank you for that.
And the winner of this battle Is going to be Ryan.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Ryan's moving on to the knockouts, representing Gwen Stefani! Congratulations, Ryan.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Gwen: It's so crazy.
Whoo! Thank you so much.
Ryan: It was definitely worth taking the year off school, because I'm here now, and this journey just keeps getting better and better.
I mean, it's just been amazing.
It's been amazing.
I love you.
I love you.
[ Laughs .]
It's awesome.
Daly: Coaches, let me remind you, jessie pitts is available to steal.
Jessie just said the sweetest thing.
She said, "I'm so happy for him.
" Aww.
See what I'm saying? She's an angel.
You said the nicest things, and I never imagined this.
And I'm so blessed and thankful for everything you've said.
Thank you guys so much, and thank you.
Give it up for jessie pitts, everybody! Thank you so much.
Oh, we got a steal! Blake Shelton is not letting jessie out of here! Yes, yes, yes, yes! Daly: It's a steal from Blake! Yes, yes, yes! I knew it.
I love you, Blake! [ Cheers and applause .]
You all right? I'm so lost for words.
Thank you so much.
Listen, I solemnly swear to learn who Ellie ghoulding is at some point.
It's Ellie goulding.
Goulding.
Ellie goulding.
That's what I meant to say.
Ellie goulding.
See? I'm already on the road.
[ Laughter .]
You're so unique.
I think you can win this freakin' thing.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Daly: Well, there you have it.
Blake steals jessie pitts.
Congratulations.
We'll be seeing you also now in the knockouts.
I'm gonna learn who Ellie ghoulding is.
I promise.
[ Laughs .]
Oh, my goodness.
Thank you! [ Laughs .]
Thank you! Thank you! Oh, my gosh.
I have tears on my face still.
I'm sorry.
I am so excited.
I don't even know what just happened.
I did not see that coming at all.
I have no more steals left, and it's because of this girl right here.
Oh, my goodness! [ Laughs .]
Blake.
You're so good.
You're so freakin' good.
Is this the parents? Thank you! Thank you! How you doing? I'm Blake.
What's your name? Becky.
Good to meet you, Becky.
Danny.
Nice to meet you.
Hey, Danny.
Family hug.
Oh, we're so excited! Daly: Coming up Ahh! [ Laughs .]
Daly: Pharrell and Alicia keys join forces to bring out the best in his artists.
This isn't like the high-school talent show.
I want you to occupy this whole space.
When I see you on the street Y'all are standing there like background singers.
And y'all are stars.
Join me in that process of really challenging ourselves.
This is, like, your moment.
Come on! Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Let's head over to pharrell and his adviser, grammy award-winning superstar Alicia keys.
I'm so honored to have my team, including her.
Sister keys in here.
Amen, amen.
Daly: Now let's meet pharrell's first battle pairing.
25-year-old blessing offor from New York City versus 15-year-old katriz Trinidad from San Diego, California.
After losing his sight at an early age, blessing channeled his efforts into music.
Blessing: I've played at the Kennedy center, and I received an international soloist award.
"The voice" is the closest to what I think music is about, which is sounds.
Just the two of us daly: During the blind auditions, his soulful performance got all four coaches to turn their chairs.
With a voice like yours, you know, that's undiscovered real estate.
That's right up my alley.
Pharrell.
Blake: Whoa! Daly: 15-year-old katriz Trinidad came to "the voice" inspired by her family.
My love has come along daly: Her version of the classic "at last" impressed three coaches.
I never thought that I would find something that I usually look for for my own label Like, I've been dreaming for an artist like you.
I'm going to pick pharrell.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Hey.
Ahh! [ Laughs .]
Okay.
I'm sorry.
Okay.
How's it going? Walking in, I heard this voice.
I even know who you are.
How do you know? You know my voice? And I was like, "oh, my God.
That's Alicia keys.
" Are we gonna hug? Yeah.
[ Chuckles .]
Alicia keys oh, my gosh.
I love her so much.
So glad to see y'all.
This is fun.
Blessing: I am so excited.
Pharrell is the best artist in the business right now.
You may wonder why I chose to pair you guys together.
Yes.
Yes.
Both of you guys sing from the heart, and it's all about expressing where you come from and what this opportunity means to you.
Pharrell: I gave them "do I do" by Stevie wonder because the dynamics in the song just go so many places.
When I see you on the street my whole body gets weak I am a huge Stevie fan.
Like, I grew up on Stevie wonder.
When you're standing in the crowd Hey.
Yeah.
Katriz, you just showed everybody that you can really sing well.
But you didn't, like, let go.
And the only way you're gonna let go is when you know it so well.
I'm not really familiar with, like, singing Stevie wonder songs 'cause I'm used to singing those, you know, diva songs.
You're more than just a balladeer.
You should know that.
Honestly, if you take the drums out of "do I do," it's a ballad.
That's the magic of Stevie wonder.
And then, blessing, you sang mostly in your false register.
And I want you to push it.
Alicia: Your approach can have a little bit of that aggression, a little bit more of that You know, that feeling.
When I see you on the street Katriz: I do have a lot to prove because blessing has more experience, and he's older than me, so I just really have to step up my game.
When you're standing in the crowd your love talks to me so loud Alicia: Okay.
girl, do I do Someone's loosening up.
Someone's getting nice and loose.
Okay.
And, you see, every time people react, it's not just technically what you're doing.
It's because we can sense the feeling.
Okay.
And, blessing Blessing: Yes, sir awesome.
So happy you guys are on my team.
[ Chuckles .]
Thank you.
Blessing really has a good feel for the song.
You can tell it's a little bit more a part of his DNA.
Katriz needs to really know that song.
She needs to listen to it all night long.
If she's not comfortable enough, she doesn't seize it, then he'll run over her.
And he has to be careful not to oversing it, because it it starts to be one note.
Daly: With their battle approaching, blessing and katriz meet with pharrell and Alicia for a final rehearsal.
When I hear you on the phone your sweet, sexy voice turned my ear all the way on my heart has been waiting for your love my arms have been waiting for your love to arrive Blessing, on that last one, it's important to hit the the right note yes, sir.
So that you guys harmonize.
When you're listening to a Stevie tune, there are a million places you can go melodically.
I'm having to learn to just make a map in my head and stick to it.
Katriz, I want you to sing without a Mike stand.
I want you to occupy this whole space.
So, when you're singing, you know, when I see You can come around.
You on the street And then kind of start to My whole body I just want you to play with this area, too, just so you can, like, feel it a little bit.
She's right.
I know you're 15.
Yeah.
But this isn't like the high-school talent show.
This is, like, your moment.
Okay.
And then, blessing, when you sing this song, you wouldn't stand in one place.
You know what? I'm I'm trying to get used to all the ambience.
When I hear you on the phone Katriz she obviously is more aware of the space than I am.
While she can move around, I think I have to rely more on my voice.
Yes, I got some candy kisses for your lips Pharrell: Katriz and blessing They're both really good singers.
It's gonna come down to who executes with technique as long as they surrender to the moment.
Click.
That's how boxers do it.
Daly: It's the night of their performance, and blessing and katriz get ready to battle.
Katriz: My parents moved down here to America so I can live the American dream.
I would love to really win this to thank them for everything that they've done.
Blessing: There are obvious comparisons between me and Stevie, but I have always strived to be my own person and my own artist, so I'm gonna try to show that today.
Daly: Coming up When I see you on the street Hey! Artists fight till the end to stay in the competition.
halo, halo And later Oh! We got a steal! Gwen Stefani gets in on the action! Our coaches face off to steal an artist.
I don't know how I can't have you on my team.
Uh-huh, all the girls stomp your feet like this Whoo! [ Laughter .]
That's not fair.
Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
On the battle stage from team pharrell, Nigerian soul singer blessing offor [ Cheers and applause .]
Taking on 15-year-old Filipino American pop artist katriz Trinidad! [ Cheers and applause .]
This battle begins right now.
Do I, do I, do I, do I, do I, yeah ah, yeah when I see you on the street Hey! My whole body gets weak ohh when you're standing in the crowd your love talks to me so loud girl, do I do whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa what you do [ Scatting .]
When I do, yeah my love to you, ooh, yeah when I hear you on the phone your sweet, sexy voice turns my ear all the way on just the mention of your name seems to drive my head insane boy, do I do shoo-be-de-bop-bop-bah you do, yeah when I do my love to you, yeah, yeah, yeah yes, I got some candy kisses for your lips yes, I got some honeysuckle chocolate dripping kisses full of love for you yes, I got some candy kisses for your lips yes, I got some honeysuckle chocolate dripping kisses full of love for you ah, my life has been waiting for your love my arms have been waiting for your love to arrive my heart has been waiting my soul anticipating your love, your love, your l-l-l-l-l-love yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, whoo! Hah! Do I do ooh, yeah, yeah what you do [ Scatting .]
When I do yeah my love to you Daly: That is a battle for team pharrell! Give it up for katriz and blessing offor! [ Cheers and applause .]
All right, coach pharrell.
We'll give you a second to think about that battle.
Gwen Stefani, what'd you think? Both of you are shocking for different reasons.
Katriz, you are shocking because you're like a little, miniature, beautiful porcelain doll, and then you have this bold, beautiful, acrobatic voice.
Thank you.
And then, blessing, your tone is so rich and thick and Thanks.
I mean, it was so effortless and natural, and it was really incredible.
Thank you so much.
Daly: Thank you, Gwen.
Adam levine.
This was a big challenge for you, katriz, because I would say for sure this is more blessing's kind of thing.
Yeah.
And you did such a great job at rising to that challenge.
There were moments that were kind of lower than you probably wanted to go, but you still had precision.
It was a lot of fun.
I was smiling.
And we were just dancing and having a great time, so congrats to the both of you guys.
Thank you.
Thanks, Adam.
Blake Shelton.
It says a lot about both of you that pharrell would hand y'all that piece of music and have confidence that you could perform it the way you just did.
I mean, you guys did it incredibly well.
I don't know how you're gonna make this decision.
It was pretty damn equal, and I'll say, katriz, you really had to step up there.
I mean, here's a guy who's a very accomplished vocalist Yeah and for you to go toe-to-toe with him like you did, that's very impressive.
Thank you.
All right, pharrell, the final decision is yours.
It's a tough one because I sent them both back with notes, and I feel like they both rose to the occasion.
But we got to make a decision.
We do agree that they both did a really good job, right? [ Cheers and applause .]
So you guys are both winners, but I'm gonna go with katriz.
Katriz moves on to the knockout round! Nice, nice, nice, nice, nice.
Well done.
Pharrell: I chose katriz because she does have a beautiful voice and she's had a lot of training.
That's gonna be the beauty in her potential.
Thank you.
Great job.
Katriz: It was definitely a tough battle.
As you can see, blessing's really talented.
And I've grown so much.
I can't wait to see what else happens, and I'm just so excited.
Coaches, let me remind you blessing is available to steal.
Blessing, now is your time.
Anything you'd like to say to coach pharrell? I just want to thank you, 'cause this has been really amazing learning from you and hanging out.
Oh! We got a steal! Adam levine! Ah! Nice! He got new life! Whoo! Adam levine has pressed his button and stealing blessing offor! Thank you! [ Laughs .]
Honestly, I thought you were killing it, and my wife's name she's from Namibia.
And her name is behati, which, in Swahili, means "blessing.
" Blessing: Hey! So it makes me love you a lot more.
We're like family already.
So I don't know how I can't have you on my team now.
[ Laughs .]
That could make it not happen.
Daly: Oh, no! Another steal! [ Laughs .]
Perfect.
After that? After all of that? Gwen Stefani gets in on the action! Oh, my God! After I said that sweet thing about my wife.
Is "Stefani" Italian for "blessing"? I think it is.
"Stefani" is Italian for "team Adam.
" Gwen Stefani, what is it about him that you want on your team? I love your voice, and just being around someone as talented as you is gonna be inspiring for me in my life, so I just want to get to know you and see what you go.
Oh, man! I'd like to say one more thing, though.
Now that I got to fight for you, I got to fight.
I'm positive that I know what we can do because I know what you like.
Oh, okay.
I can tell.
And I can.
I just know.
[ Laughter .]
I got to sing with Stevie once, and I just could tell by the way you sang that song that you have part of that spirit in you.
[ Cheers and applause .]
All right, blessing.
It is up to you.
Pick your new coach.
[ Laughs .]
[ Audience shouting .]
Thank you for saving me, because I truly love being here.
Um I pick Adam.
Yeah! Daly: Adam levine! Yeah! There's your new member of team Adam, everybody blessing offor.
Thank you.
Dude, I appreciate it.
We're gonna have fun, man.
We're gonna have a great time! Yeah, we're gonna have a great time.
Oh, my goodness.
I got saved! Whoo! I'm so excited to go to the knockouts.
I'm just beyond thrilled.
I-I-I want this so bad.
I'm so proud of you.
Blessing just has a natural ability to sing the lights out.
I love his voice.
Yes! It was even stronger tonight than previously.
And the dude just knows what he's doing, man.
He's a great singer.
Ohh! Ooh! That was close.
[ Laughs .]
Daly: Coming up Two team Adam artists take on a rock classic It's kind of your little "landslide" moment.
Yeah.
Look how they shine fo-o-o-r Daly: And our coaches are impressed by incredible talent.
Halo I can see your halo It's just so mind-blowing that you guys can do that with your voices.
That was bonkers.
You could be a duo.
You're at a whole other level, and I was amazed by that.
Daly: Welcome back to the battles.
Let's head over to team Adam to find out how his next battle pairing matches up.
25-year-old Ethan Butler from Chicago, Illinois, versus 23-year-old Matt mcandrew from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
As the son of a pastor, Ethan came to "the voice" to break free of his gospel roots.
See beneath your beautiful tonight? Daly: His smooth sound during the blind auditions got both Adam and Blake to push their buttons.
When I hear you sing, I think to myself, "I need this guy.
" I choose Adam.
Yes! [ Cheers and applause .]
Daly: Matt, a guitar teacher, came to "the voice" hoping to change his family's life.
Matt: Having the opportunity to give back to my mom That's the whole goal.
Nobody's really taking care of her, so that's kind of what I'm trying to do.
I'll love you for a thousand mo-o-o-o-re Daly: His unique vibe got three coaches to turn their chairs.
I was really moved by what you did.
I'm gonna go with Adam.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Adam: Hey, gentlemen.
Hey.
How's it going? Good to see you, man.
What's up, dude? You guys may or may not know, this Stevie nicks, rock legend, everybody.
Stevie nicks, hello.
So nice to meet you.
Great to meet you.
You too.
I walked into rehearsal, and I saw Stevie nicks.
This is crazy.
This is gonna be totally life-changing.
I'm so excited to get to work with rock royalty.
I love this song.
I love coldplay.
They're doing "yellow" by coldplay, which is, I think, one of my favorites.
It's such a gorgeous freakin' song.
I mean, Chris Martin was on the show.
He's such a wonderful guy.
Matt: I think the song's great.
I've been a fan of it since my high-school days.
It just it makes you feel something.
You know what I mean? It's it's one of those, like, powerful songs.
Definitely one of my favorites.
Adam: Ethan and Matt I think that they belong together.
They can understand this song.
And the beauty of that vocal is in that's it's very simple and broken down and sincere.
I came along I wrote a song for you Stevie: Ethan has just a beautiful, choir-like voice.
You can tell he has sung in the church.
Beautiful.
And it was called yellow Matt has a very compassionate voice, and I think that he has the ability to make you cry.
For you, I'd bleed myself dry Ethan, let me tell you this.
I would commit to doing a full voice.
Okay.
Because you have a little more command of it that way.
And, Matt, Chris Martin's thing, he specifically is cracking into his falsetto.
You lean towards doing that more.
Really commit to doing the falsetto.
You're a quieter singer, so you need to stay around the Mike.
Cool.
Right there.
And you need to Just a little bit, pull back a little bit.
You're just louder.
Right now, you're the dream team, so you have to be really watching out for each other.
For sure.
Daly: Before their battle, Ethan and Matt have one last rehearsal with Adam and Stevie nicks.
Look how they shine for you Adam: Ethan and Matt came in with their own interpretation of the song, where they play acoustic guitar.
And I was thrilled.
I loved it.
You can tell that they're doing it for the purity of what they're doing.
Look how they shine for you Where do you guys harmonize? Oh, "I took my turn.
What a thing to have done.
" If you guys master that, it's such an incredible tool 'cause it immediately can give you some subtlety and some dynamic and some range.
Just remember to not get louder.
You know what I'm saying? I do.
Remember, you're more important than just getting out there and being rockers.
You're also trying to break hearts.
Yeah, and you guys sound so good in unison.
Yeah.
Cool.
Like, that is, like, such a hard thing to sound good doing.
It is.
And it happens in my band.
Christine and Lindsey sometimes sing in unison together, and it creates another voice.
It's kind of your little "landslide" moment.
It's really beautiful.
Yeah.
It's so pretty.
I almost want to hear a little bit more of it.
Look how they shine for you Adam: I think that Ethan, his strength is his big voice that he can take all the way up to the top without going in falsetto.
Matt's soul kind of emanates from everything he does.
You have to kind of just see how they put their own stamp.
I don't want anyone to be cookie-cutter this season.
you do Daly: It's the night of their battle, and Ethan and Matt arrive prepared to go voice-to-voice.
Matt: Going home now means going back to working at a grocery store and teaching music to help support my family, so there's a lot on the line when I step out on the stage today.
Ethan: I have been working at the church, and this is an opportunity to dive into the secular industry.
I'm gonna do what I can to come out on top.
Daly: Still to come Ethan and Matt take the ring with an emotional performance Look how they shine for yo-o-o-o-u Daly: And the steal of the night.
Whoo! [ Laughter .]
[ Cheers and applause .]
Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Going voice-to-voice from team Adam, it's the smooth-singing preacher's song from Chicago, Ethan Butler [ Cheers and applause .]
Versus the hardworking pop artist, Matt mcandrew! [ Cheers and applause .]
Come on! [ Cheers and applause .]
Let's do this, man.
Yeah, man.
[ Cheers and applause .]
The battle starts now.
Look at the stars look how they shine for you and all the things you do yeah, they were all yellow I came along I wrote a song for you and all the things you do and it was called "yellow" oh so then I took my turn oh, what a thing to have done my love and they were all yello-o-o-o-o-o-w your skin oh, yeah, your skin and bones turn into something beautiful do you know, for you, I'd bleed myself dry? For you, I'd bleed myself dry look how they shine for you look how they shine for you look how they shine for you look how they shine for you look how they shine look at the stars look how they shine for you and all the things that you do [ Cheers and applause .]
Daly: Give it up for Ethan and Matt! Good job.
Yeah, man.
That was awesome.
In a battle for team Adam! [ Cheers and applause .]
All right, Adam.
We'll give you a second to take that all in.
Let's start with coach Blake.
Great job, guys.
I don't know the last time we've seen people just get lost in the moment like that.
In this situation, it's tough to do.
And you guys approached this like your own concert, and you could be a duo.
I mean, you guys work that well together.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I don't know what the hell you're gonna do.
Thanks, buddy.
They dumped their hearts out there on on stage.
Good luck, buddy.
Thank you, Blake.
Thank you.
Daly: Pharrell.
Pharrell: The way you sang the song, Matt, was so amazing that it would just obviously be you, because it's your wheelhouse, but I have to say that, Mr.
Butler, like, you definitely surprised me.
Yeah, dude.
Thank you.
[ Cheers and applause .]
I appreciate that.
And two different approaches, too.
You know, the way that you guys approached that top note differently, but it was equally as beautiful, so It's a draw for me.
And, I mean, that's a compliment to you both.
Thank you.
For sure.
Thank you, pharrell.
Really appreciate that.
Gwen? I, uh I loved that.
You both really did great.
I felt like it was a little more suited for you.
I felt like you were way outside of your zone, but you were, like, taking it like a man.
You were like, "I don't care.
I'm gonna do it.
" And, Matt, there's something magical about you.
I can't believe you're only 23 years old.
I love your voice.
It was giving me shivers.
Anyways, it was great.
And thank you.
I totally enjoyed every bit of it.
Thank you, Gwen.
Thank you, coaches.
Adam, the final decision is yours between these two.
I'm so happy with you guys.
The whole you kind of going for the note, full voice, versus Matt going for the falsetto That was a huge subject when we talked about it in rehearsals.
And it worked, and you did a fantastic job.
Ethan: Thank you.
Matt, dude, there's something about what you do that kind of goes beyond having a great voice.
It's something that is intangible.
And, Ethan, you are an accomplished, talented, skillful, soulful singer.
Thank you.
You know, this is a really tough thing.
Putting you two together was never a good idea for me 'cause I knew that it was gonna really be apples and oranges here.
All right, Adam.
It's time.
We need to know, who is the winner of this battle? Uh [ Audience shouting .]
This winner of this battle is Matt.
Matt moves on to the knockout rounds Great job, dude.
Representing team Adam.
Matt: I really wanted to go into this and be more confident and more calm, and I felt like I was.
I'm ready to check this off as a success.
You got me choked me up there, so thank you so much, man.
You're amazing.
It was just it was awesome.
All right, coaches.
Let me remind you Ethan Butler is available to steal.
Ethan, anything you'd like to say to coach Adam? I feel like this experience has been something that has allowed me to fall in love with music again.
And I have a newfound confidence, so I want to thank you for just giving me this opportunity.
Thank you, man.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Give it up for Ethan Butler, everybody! [ Cheers and applause .]
Whoo! Pharrell: As great as Ethan was, he was holding onto something.
But at some point, you have to let go, and I don't think he did that.
That kid, Matt he's a star.
Oh, my God.
He's so rad.
That dude is ridiculous.
I just believe that this this kid has a real career ahead of him that's gonna be really special.
This guy could be a big deal.
I think you better knock Daly: You can download full versions of tonight's battle performances I come alive I need to be free, yeah Daly: And Gwen Stefani's new single, "baby, don't lie," on iTunes.
Here's the world-exclusive sneak peek at her new music video.
Baby, don't, baby, don't, baby, don't lie I don't wanna cry no longer baby, don't, baby, don't, baby, don't lie I'mma need a love that's stronger I'll tell you now, I'll tell you now I'll tell you now why Daly: Coming up Blake brings in country super group little big town You're no good, you're no good To prepare his artists for battle.
I mean, this could be, like, showstopper.
Crap.
I shouldn't have paired y'all together.
Daly: And later Meet your brand-new coach, Adam levine! Get over here.
A steal no one saw coming.
Blake: [ Laughs .]
Daly: Welcome back to the battles.
Let's take a look at Blake's next battle pairing.
25-year-old Bree fondacaro from orange, California, versus 21-year-old Taylor brashears from Nashville, Tennessee.
Bree works in a family business with her father.
Bree: My dad is a little person, and he's a piano and vocal teacher.
He brings me in with helping his students.
You want to make sure that your diaphragm you're expanding out.
But it ain't me, babe daly: Her blind-audition performance of a Bob Dylan classic got Blake to turn his chair.
I loved the originality in your voice.
Your voice has a-a rawness to it that reminds me of someone like Bonnie Tyler.
And I think that you're completely unique to this competition.
Thank you so much.
Daly: Taylor came to "the voice" hoping to escape her day job.
Taylor: My brother is in charge of the food truck.
I'm mainly the cashier.
Thank you guys so much for coming out.
For you to get to him, I'd have to move over but I'm gonna stand right here daly: Her classic performance got three coaches to push their buttons.
[ Laughs .]
Your tone is so amazing.
Go with somebody who knows where your heart is.
I know how to get you there.
It's in my heart.
I pick Blake.
Yes! Hi.
Hi.
Hello, girls.
How are you? Come in here.
Come here.
Good to see y'all.
Good to see you.
Come meet my friends, little big town, over here.
Taylor: Coming from Nashville and seeing little big town at the piano there was just amazing.
They have these powerhouse vocals, and I'm very happy that I chose Blake as my coach.
Having a total of five superstars coaching me is kind of insane.
I'm so humbled and honored right now.
How y'all been? Super good.
Very good.
When it comes to being able to divvy up parts and make something incredible out of a lyric, there's nobody better than little big town.
And these guys are extremely powerful singers.
I mean, they have it all.
I'm real excited, because you two are absolutely nothing alike, and that's what always makes for the best battles.
I gave Taylor and Bree "you're no good" by Linda ronstadt because it's a song where these girls can have some attitude.
And it's cross genre, too.
I mean, this is a song that you may go to a country concert or a rock concert and hear.
You're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good Smoky.
Yeah.
Now I see how you really are you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good Vintage.
Bravo! My gosh, we got everything.
Hey, Taylor, I think you really got to push on some of those things.
I know.
Yeah.
It sneaks up.
Because I was listening to you.
Good I mean, it gets up there.
Blake: Taylor can sing so high, it blows your mind.
But she's gonna have to learn how to take a big breath and push out some of these notes that can impress the coaches.
And you, too, really, because a lot of air comes out to make that smoky sound that you have, which is money.
But be sure that you got plenty of it when it's time to reach for those notes.
I mean, this could be, like, showstopper.
This is gonna be show that front, if you keep those phrases tight, it's gonna suck people in right from the get-go.
I like that you took a little liberty with the melody but you still stayed true to it and and didn't go too far away from it.
Appreciate that.
Crap.
I shouldn't have paired y'all together.
Taylor: I'm nervous about going up against Bree in this battle just because of her amazing, unique voice, so I definitely have a lot of work cut out for me to step up my game.
Nice to meet you.
Kimberly: They're great.
I love the texture of both of those girls' voices.
Philip: Really cool.
So cool.
Yeah.
They got the goods.
Daly: Bree and Taylor have one last rehearsal with Blake and little big town.
You're no good, you're no good you're no good you're no good ohh, ohh, no you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good Karen: Bree, I think you want to go, you're no good, you're no good you're no good you're no good Yeah.
Yeah.
And, Taylor, the you're no good, you're no good you're no good Is your note on the front.
Yeah.
Baby, you're no good Y'all are landing on a unison right there, and it's supposed to be a harmony.
Yeah.
But I think you're just creeping down to what she's singing.
The biggest challenge I have for this song is I have to know how to reach those notes without, you know, giving up in the middle of the song.
I'll tell you where each of you have the edge on each other.
In the choruses, she is so pissed off when she's singing it, and she should be.
She just sounds mad about it.
It's so believable.
But in the verses, she's got that sultry thing.
Taylor needs to be a little sexier and sultry in the verses.
Bree needs to be a little bit more angry in the choruses.
Y'all need to find somebody in your head that you're angry at.
Bree: I have a lot of style in my voice.
I just have to remember when to really bring my stronger, more gritty voice at the forefront.
You're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good Yeah! Karen: This is a range-y song, and you've got to have control.
And they both approach it in a different way, so Bree takes all this texture and smoke up there.
Now I see who you really are you're no good, you're no good Karen: And Taylor just takes purity, power.
You're no good, you're no good Karen: It's gonna be interesting to see what Blake responds to, 'cause it's very different delivery.
Baby, you're no good Daly: Still to come Oh, you're no good daly: .
.
.
Powerful performances, tough decisions I loved seeing the difference approaches that were happening up there.
Both of you guys let go, but I have to make a decision.
Daly: And the artists get new life with the steal.
[ Laughter .]
Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
With their performance moments away, Bree and Taylor get ready for battle.
Taylor: I've worked so hard.
I have a lot riding on this battle.
Thank you.
I don't want to go back to Nashville.
I don't want to get back on the food truck.
Bree: I just need to let it all go and come out of my shell, and getting up there, up on that stage, is gonna get me that much closer to that dream.
Battling tonight from team Blake, it's the pop singer from a musical family, Bree fondacaro [ Cheers and applause .]
Going head-to-head with the food-truck cashier and country singer Taylor brashears! [ Cheers and applause .]
Go tay-tay! Do good.
The battle starts now.
You're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good I'm feelin' better now that we're through feelin' better 'cause I'm over you I learned my lesson it left a scar and now I see who you really are you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good I'm gonna say it again you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good I broke a heart that's gentle and true well, I broke a heart over someone like you I'll beg his forgiveness on bended knee I wouldn't blame him if he said to me you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good I'm gonna say it again you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good I'm telling you now, baby, I'm goin' my way forget about you, baby, 'cause I'm leaving this day you're no good, you're no good, you're no good baby, you're no good ohh, ohh, no you're no good, you're no good you're no good baby, you're no good [ Cheers and applause .]
Whoo! Daly: Give it up for Taylor and Bree in a battle for team Blake! [ Cheers and applause .]
Bree! Yeah, Bree! Nice job.
Let's start with pharrell.
What'd you think? I'm gonna start with Bree.
I would loved to have seen you just lose yourself a little more in it.
Yeah.
Technically, are you a great singer? Yes.
But I usually just go for, like, when people just have that conviction, they don't even have to be the best singer in the world.
I mean, look at me.
I mean, like, come on.
I get away with it because I believe in it and I'm having a good time.
Yeah.
You know? And I wouldn't just rely on the fact that you can sing.
Like, have a ball.
And, Taylor, you're just so damn confident.
And you're just like, "well, okay.
Wait till you see me.
" And you just dive in, and I relate to that.
I-I would choose Taylor.
Thank you.
Thank you, pharrell.
Gwen? The problem I have with the performance with both of you guys was I loved the song so much, and neither one of you did the original melody.
It's so simple.
You know, do, do, do I wish I could write a melody that simple and that catchy, you know? And then you changed it, and it was like, "ah! No!" Because I love the song.
So that distracted me in the performance, and that's where it fell for me.
Adam.
Adam: Performance-wise, I felt like Bree was singing the song alone in her bedroom, being like, "he's no good.
Oh, I hate this guy.
" But then I felt like Taylor was, like, talking to the dude and being like, "yo, you're no good.
I hate you.
Ugh!" And and I loved seeing the different approaches that were happening up there.
Personally, I think that because the more self-assured vibe that Taylor gave off, I-I would go with Taylor.
[ Applause .]
Thank you.
All right, coaches, thank you very much.
Blake, you have the final decision.
Well, first, let me just say that I'm proud of both of you.
You know, Bree has this lower register.
I mean, she is so good at that.
I mean, it draws you in to what she's doing.
It's almost, like, hypnotic.
But Taylor's upper register and just the strength of her voice will suck you in just as much and her personality that comes through.
And Bree gets lost in herself when she's performing.
And Taylor gets lost in the song.
I don't know if that makes any sense to either one of you, but That's a great point.
It's it's what I just saw happen.
And because of that, moving forward The winner of this battle Is Taylor.
Taylor's gonna move on to the knockouts, representing team Blake, everybody.
[ Cheers and applause .]
Thank you.
Congratulations.
Taylor: I feel so good.
This is amazing.
It's so unreal.
I'm one step closer to making music my career, and I'm so ready to go on to knockouts.
Let's do it, like, right now.
Let's just do it.
All right, coaches, let me remind you, Bree fondacaro is available to steal.
Bree, anything you would like to say to your coach? Bree: This is what I love to do, and I put my heart and soul into it.
And you encouraged it all the way.
And so, I thank you.
[ Cheers and applause .]
A big thank you to Bree fondacaro, everybody.
Thank you so much.
Good luck, sweetie.
Thank you.
Daly: Bree fondacaro, thank you.
Taylor's just so confident.
Blake: Mm-hmm.
She's got an old soul.
She has that.
So much attitude right there.
Yes.
Blake: Taylor is definitely a serious threat to the other coaches.
I can see her being one of those strong women in country music and a little bit more traditional than than what we have out there right now, and that makes me very excited.
Daly: Coming up [ Voice breaking .]
I'm just so happy to be here.
It's seriously crazy.
I want the feeling in that performance.
Pharrell and Alicia keys get to the heart of the matter.
It is overwhelming.
You cried because you felt something.
That means it's in there.
It's in there.
Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Let's see where the teams stand.
Whoo! Adam picked r&B vocalist Damien and pop artist Matt mcandrew and stole soul singer blessing offor.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! Daly: Gwen kept pop singer Ryan sill.
Pharrell chose powerhouse katriz Trinidad.
And Blake picked country hopeful Taylor brashears and stole indie artist jessie pitts.
Now let's take a look at the final battle pairing of the night.
25-year-old danica shirey from York, Pennsylvania, versus 29-year-old toia Jones from Montgomery, Alabama.
Danica, a stay-at-home mom, found the courage to hit the stage after losing her biggest supporter.
Danica: My dad was pushing so hard for me my whole life to do music, but he ended up passing away.
I haven't stepped on a stage in 3 years.
I'm going crazy daly: During the blind auditions, her soulful voice got the attention of three coaches.
You have such incredible technique.
Will you please be on my team? [ Laughs .]
Pharrell.
Oh, man! Daly: Toia came to "the voice" hoping her years of hard work would pay off.
Toia: I started my band with my boyfriend.
For years, I was struggling.
I sing at casinos, parties, clubs.
Until the e-e-end Daly: Her powerful performance turned two chairs.
I felt your spirit, like, somebody that was singing for their life with their life.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Pharrell.
[ Cheers and applause .]
God bless you.
No, God bless you.
Hi.
Hi.
Hey.
Hey.
Danica: Walking into rehearsal and seeing Alicia keys was insane.
For me to be able to get advice from her personally is just a dream come true.
Today you guys are gonna be singing "halo" by Beyoncé.
Because the topic is so deeply personally, it can mean really anything to each one of you separately.
Pharrell: I paired danica and toia together because I felt like their voices were similar in terms of tone.
But at the same time, they both can really relate to the lyric.
Toia: remember those walls I built? Baby, they are tumbling down Toia: It's a Beyoncé song, so it's overwhelming because I don't want to mess up.
You're still thinking a little bit.
I am.
I am.
I tend to doubt myself because so many others have doubted me.
Pharrell: Yeah.
Not time for that.
Those others where are they? Not here.
They're not here.
Hello.
[ Laughs .]
I would like toia to put her own instinct before those other voices in her head.
Baby, I can see your halo you know you're my saving grace Because it's such a specific way that b.
Sings this song, I want to make sure that we're getting your uniqueness.
And even deeper, whose halo can you feel? My father's halo.
Whose halo do you feel, danica? [ Voice breaking .]
Every time I sing this song, I think about my dad, so it's, like Toia: I felt an even stronger connection with danica because, just like me, she lost her father.
He would want you to feel.
Your father's watching you.
I'm just so happy to be here.
I want the feeling in that performance.
Absolutely.
Right? Yes.
I just need to make sure that I really, really feel each and every word of the song.
Daly: As their battle nears, danica and toia meet with pharrell and Alicia keys for a final rehearsal.
Halo halo, I can see your halo halo, halo halo, oh Okay, so, look, you guys are great singers.
You're not doubting, and you're not holding back.
But want me to be honest with you? Mm-hmm.
Please.
Yes.
Absolutely.
Y'all are standing there like background singers.
And y'all are stars.
Pharrell: Singing with emotion is is very important because you're at the center of the stage.
What you're doing is so much bigger than the background.
And then, toia, on "I can feel your halo," feed to her a little bit, go to the audience, wherever you want to go, you know? Like, you are anywhere you want to be.
[ Crying .]
[ Sobbing .]
I'm sorry.
It is overwhelming.
It is a lot.
You know? It is overwhelming, and it's But you know what? Toia, you got to understand that this is not the only moment This is the moment.
You cried because you felt something.
Mm-hmm.
That's the great news.
It's in there.
As a woman, I personally would look so much for people's acceptance.
Join me in that process of really challenging ourselves to listen to what we feel first.
Seriously, I want you to sing this song again like you are in the bathroom.
I pray it won't fade away Danica: halo I can see your halo We really got to the heart of it all, and that's when we had the breakthrough.
And suddenly, that song, it was just a whole different world.
Halo Whoo-hoo! See what happens when you surrender to the moment? That's what I'm talking about.
Mm! That's what I'm talking about.
Mm.
This is such an incredible battle, and honestly, this is the beginning of both of y'all's lives.
It's gonna be very tough to see who I choose, because they both are struggling with the same thing.
It's a tie between those two.
Daly: It's the night of their performance, and danica and toia get ready for battle.
You're not really singing against each other.
You're singing against yourselves.
What I'm gonna probably side with today is the person that just unzips and goes, "you know what? Here I am.
"I might screw up a couple notes, "but, man, I'm going for it 'cause this is my moment and I deserve it.
" Danica: I know this is what my dad would have wanted for me.
This is my chance to get back and do what I love to do.
Toia: It is very important for me to let go and show emotion in this performance, because I'm not a background singer.
I am singing for my life.
Daly: Coming up Halo I can see your halo halo, halo An unbelievable performance [ Laughs .]
Leads to a moment you won't forget.
[ Laughter .]
No.
No.
Stop with that.
That was nice.
[ Laughs .]
Daly: Welcome back to the battle rounds.
Battling from team pharrell, the stay-at-home mom returning to her music dreams, danica shirey [ Cheers and applause .]
And the Alabama powerhouse with strong church roots, toia Jones! Whoo! Whoo! Whoo! Whoo! [ Cheers and applause .]
This battle begins right now.
Remember those walls I built? Well, baby, they're tumbling down they didn't even put up a fight they didn't even make a sound I found a way to let you in but I never really had a doubt standing in the light of your halo I got my angel now Hey! it's like I've been awakened every rule I had you breaking it's the risk that I'm taking I ain't never gonna shut you out everywhere I'm looking now I'm surrounded by your embrace baby, I can see your halo you know you're my saving grace you're everything I need and more it's written all over your face baby, I can feel your halo I know you're my saving grace I can feel your halo halo, I can feel your halo halo I can see your halo halo, halo ooh ooh, ooh Crazy.
Whoo, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh, ooh, ooooooh halo halo halo whoooooo halo halo oh, oh, ohhh halo halo ooooh [ Cheers and applause .]
Daly: That is danica and toia battling down to the last note for team pharrell! [ Cheers and applause .]
We'll get to your coach, pharrell, in a minute.
Let's see if your other coaches can't help you out.
Gwen, what'd you think? Gwen: That was crazy.
Your voices are both so beautiful and powerful and [ Cheers and applause .]
It's just so mind-blowing that you guys can do that with your voices.
It's it's so inspiring to sit here and watch you do it.
And thank you for that performance.
It was incredible.
Thank you, Gwen.
Adam? Okay, so, doing a Beyoncé song, it literally It is literally like trying to slay a dragon.
[ Laughter .]
And, you guys, you, like, slayed the dragon, and then, like, you just slapped it in the face to make sure it knew it was dead.
[ Cheers and applause .]
It was like, ba, ba, ba! That was bonkers.
There were two winners up there, man, there really were.
So congratulations, ladies.
Thanks, Adam.
Blake Shelton.
Gosh dang it.
I mean, the performance was on 10 the whole time.
I think that, between the two of you, danica kind of displayed a little bit more of a softer edge, but, toia, man, where did you come from? Man, that's that was incredible.
That's a tough one, man.
All right, coach pharrell Williams, you have the final decision, sir.
Give me some thoughts first.
Each one of you recognized what I was talking about in terms of, like, the importance of conviction.
You sang for yourselves.
Yeah.
And I'm telling you, both of you guys let go.
Both of you let go.
But I have to make a decision.
Pharrell, who's the winner of this battle? [ Audience shouting .]
I wish I could choose both of you.
I can't.
So I'm gonna choose danica.
[ Cheers and applause .]
The winner of this battle is danica, moving on to the knockout round! It was such a tough decision, but I had to go with danica.
Thank you.
You just don't expect that voice out of her, and she went out there and she just shed her skin.
Thank you so much.
Incredible job.
Thank you.
Oh, my gosh.
I'm so excited to keep working with pharrell because I get to learn more stuff, new stuff.
I'm so proud of you, baby! Your daddy's shining on you! Coaches, let me remind you, toia is available to steal.
[ Cheers and applause .]
We've got a steal! Adam levine gives toia new life! Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Toia Jones, meet your brand-new coach, Adam levine! Thank you so much.
Adam: You deserve it.
You're so, so welcome.
Thank you.
Oh! [ Laughs .]
Daly: We got another steal! Gwen Stefani! Victory lap.
Two! Two! All right, toia, make a decision.
It's time.
[ Laughter .]
I mean, don't betray your family.
It's cool.
You're on this whole other level, and I was amazed by that, so I just wanted to You got Gwen Stefani.
You got Adam levine.
Please pick your new coach.
Toia: I love you both.
I love you both so much.
Uh-huh, all the girls stomp your feet like this [ Laughter .]
That's not fair.
No.
Stop with that.
That was nice.
It's okay, toia.
Just go with your heart.
I think I'm going to choose [ Audience shouting .]
Adam.
Yes! Daly: Adam levine steals toia Jones! I was scared.
Adam: I don't have anybody on my team that sings like toia.
I played dirty.
I made friends with the family.
And I'm like, "toia, don't be seduced by Gwen.
" But both my steals came from team pharrell.
Thank you, pharrell.
Appreciate it.
Looking forward to hearing you more.
Thank you.
Adam turned around for me on the blinds, and I'm so, so happy that I got a chance to actually experience team Adam.
