Invasion (2021) s03e01 Episode Script

The Ones We Leave Behind

1
[WDC general]
Repeat, do you copy, Trevante Cole?
- [officer] Signal's dead.
- [machine beeping]
From the mothership.
All his vitals.
[machine beeping]
[machine beeping rapidly]
[doorbell rings]
- [guest] Hi.
- [homeowner] Just come on in.
Everyone's in the living room.
[rustling]
All right, Trevante.
Today's mission is to save the world.
[homeowner] Armstrong, no!
Armstrong, Armstrong!
[reporter] President Zhou will be giving
a speech shortly commemorating M-Day…
…the fall of the mothership
just two years ago.
[homeowner] Human ingenuity.
I'm telling ya,
we are the dominant species.
A stubborn bunch of assholes.
[spouse] Steven, language.
Sorry, hon.
[child] Follow me, Caspar.
Ready, Chief Cole.
I've got your back, big guy.
Our planet needs us.
Two years ago, two brave human beings,
Trevante Cole and Caspar Morrow,
sacrificed their lives to save ours.
They toppled the mothership from our sky
and the aliens haven't been…
Allie, run upstairs and grab your brother.
[Zhou] These men demonstrated the very
best of what mankind can accomplish
if we stand together as one.
[Toby sighs] There it is.
A master alien.
Let's go save the world.
Toby!
[Toby] No!
[sighs]
Well, now it's more like the real thing.
Destroyed.
Come on. Mom says it's starting.
Now we adapt.
And while our foundations were shaken
again and again from attack after attack,
they remain.
So today we celebrate two years
without alien aggression.
Two years since the fall of the
mothership and the end of the invasion.
I ask that every human, as one,
remember those we've lost.
- [spouse] Did you see the M-Day sales?
- Hon.
[spouse] What?
- Not about the sales.
- Come on.
[spouse chuckles]
Where's Armstrong?
Armstrong? Armstrong.
Here, boy.
Honey. Did you forget to close the door?
I will go look.
- [groans] I'll go look.
- [laughs]
- Thank you. That's a yes.
- [Steven] It's not me.
[chuckles]
- We should go this weekend.
- [guest] Yeah.
- [Armstrong barking]
- Of course.
[sighs]
Armstrong!
[sighs]
Armstrong?
[sighs]
Armstrong.
[fireworks whistling, popping]
Armstrong?
[Armstrong barking]
Armstrong.
Get over here.
[ominous music plays]
[leaves rustling]
Armstrong?
[barking continues]
[Armstrong whines]
Armstrong.
- [low snarl]
- [gurgling]
[rustling]
- [growls]
- [footsteps approach]
[screams]
[thunderclap]
[low snarl]
[low snarl]
[chiming]
[person] It's just chicken.
Then why don't they say chicken?
Every time I hear mystery meat,
I think of some hunter-killer carcass
they fished up.
[chuckles]
You ever had alien meat?
It doesn't taste like chicken.
It's more tangy.
[rumbling]
[computer beeping]
It's probably just another death rattle
from the mothership.
Wish my mother stayed this dormant.
I'll file the report.
- [rattling]
- [beeping rapidly]
Yeah… That doesn't feel
like a death rattle.
[rumbling]
Command, this is portal control.
We have a reading of 100 and rising.
Yes, sir, I'm sure.
It's at 200 now and it's still rising.
When did the tremors start?
I don't know. Uh, like a minute ago.
- [Jensen] Is this a drill, sir?
- Does this look like a drill?
- [beeping]
- [rumbling]
The portal is activating.
Spread out and surround the hatch.
If you see any alien life form,
fire on sight.
Opening the hatch in three, two, one.
[alarm blaring]
- Captain.
- [captain] Hold. Be ready for anything.
[alarm blaring]
[hatch clanks]
Holy shit.
- [captain] What do you see, private?
- It's Trevante Cole, sir.
[thunderclaps]
[gentle music plays]
The show is in six days
which means we need all work
for the install in four.
No exceptions.
- [commentator speaks indistinctly]
- [patrons cheering]
Half the countries in the world
don't know what flag to fly.
The world is all muddled
and those tossers are right ready
- to fight for their teams.
- [friends laugh]
I think it's nice. It means things
are getting back to normal.
I will say I do support the men
in shorts part.
Drink to that.
- I think the shorts need to be shorter.
- [friend laughs]
You can die too for all I care.
[grunts]
As you wish!
Oh, my sweet Westley. What have I done?
Oh, my… Love it. I love it.
It's… It's…
What is it?
[Jamila] It's not anything specific.
I mean, it's a feeling I guess.
The way I used to feel before.
Yes. Yes. Now I see it. Ugh, a genius.
It's beautiful. Really.
Well, you have to say that.
You're my boyfriend.
What? I didn't see that part
in my contract.
Hmm. It's in there.
[laughs]
Did anyone see that one?
Probably just some toff
who knows art shite.
- No offense.
- [scoffs]
None taken.
I'm gonna go have a look.
[murmuring]
Just gonna go get some air.
[machine beeping]
[sighs]
[sighs]
[clanging in distance]
What?
[grunts]
[mysterious music plays]
[softly] Hello?
Hello?
[machine beeping]
[inhales sharply]
[sucks teeth]
[beeping stops]
Anyone there?
[mysterious music plays]
[groans]
Hey.
Hey, can anyone hear me?
[hatch opens]
[voice] You need to eat.
Who said that?
I said who said that? Who was that?
Where am I?
Am I on the ship?
Do you think you're on the ship?
Uh, no.
I don't know.
Are you sure?
I said I don't know. [groans]
Do you know your name?
What the fuck?
My name is Trevante Cole.
What's your name?
My name doesn't matter. What's your rank?
- What's this?
- What's your rank?
Chief Warrant Officer.
Mmm. [breathes heavily]
Family members?
Why are you asking me this?
To prove you are who you say you are.
[Trevante] Who else would I be?
They have a way of learning our memories.
Getting inside people's heads.
No, no, no.
Listen, I'm not one
of those fucking aliens. Okay?
All right?
Hey, listen, if you're human…
If you're human,
just let me out of here, okay?
Not until we're sure.
Sure? Sure about… I'm standing…
I'm standing right here.
I'm standing right here.
Which is why I'm asking you questions.
What are you talking about?
What does that even mean?
Where the fuck am I?
Caspar.
Where's Caspar?
Hey.
Hey, I asked you a question.
Where's Caspar?
You asked a lot of questions.
Where is Caspar?
Morrow. Caspar Morrow.
Where is he?
Caspar Morrow died two years ago when
the alien mothership crashed to Earth.
As did Trevante Cole.
Your vitals… His vitals…
showed no signs of life.
So I ask again, family members?
Surviving family members?
[reporter] In a stunning development,
history's greatest soldier, Trevante Cole,
is alive and back on Earth.
Two years ago, Trevante Cole
and Caspar Morrow
entered the alien mothership
in a heroic effort to stop the invasion
and the onslaught of the hunter-killers.
Neither were believed
to have survived the mission.
Jamila.
- …government sources have confirmed…
- Are you okay?
…that Cole has returned.
The exact circumstances of his return
are classified…
Yeah.
No, I'm… I'm…
…to WDC Headquarters
for a medical examination and debriefing.
Cole was assumed…
[Zhou] So how the hell did it get out?
I have no idea.
It didn't come out of here.
I told you we needed
to keep this airtight.
Yeah, well, there's a lot of air between
here and the site they fished him out of.
We can't sit on this any longer.
We have to get him ready.
Ready? Ready for what?
Ready to face the world, Jack.
That man is the biggest hero
in the history of the planet
and now they know he's alive.
We need to get him out there.
I think that's a mistake.
That was an order.
You hired me to run intelligence
to help protect the world
from all possible threats.
Mr. President, I am telling you I am not
sure the man we have here isn't a threat.
So make sure.
Twenty-four hours and he's on a plane.
[call ends]
[beeping]
[Trevante] Come on, let's go.
One, two, three, four…
[Caspar screams]
[pants] Hey!
Listen, I need to talk to someone.
Hey! Look, there's something…
There's something in the ship, okay?
There's some… Hello? H-Hello?
Hello? Can anyone hear me?
Hey. Listen, I saw something, okay? I saw…
There's something on the ship.
Some… Some thing.
[stammers] I saw it.
Hel…
Hello!
Where are you?
[door opens]
Who are you? Are you…
Are you the voice? Are you… Are you him?
No. I'm taking you out.
Come with me, please.
[door buzzes, opens]
Please.
[door closes]
[door buzzes, opens]
My name is Jack Hollander, WDC.
This is General Bryant.
He heads up our military, such as it is.
You're the one.
I know your voice.
Yes, I am.
And now I'm two, much to my delight.
It's an honor to meet you, soldier.
I apologize for your treatment.
It wasn't the military's decision.
Now let's get on with it, shall we?
Just a few questions.
[device whirring]
This is for the record.
State your name.
This a polygraph machine?
Trevante Cole.
Do you remember
how you brought down the mothership?
No.
What is the last thing that you remember?
I saw something.
Something in the walls.
[Hollander] In the walls of the ship?
Yes.
That ship is dead.
It's been dormant for two years.
The hunter-killers
have been retreating there to die.
There's hardly any of them left,
and they're not attacking anymore.
Look, I-I know what I saw. Okay?
I know what I saw and I know how I feel.
What you saw or what you feel?
I… Look, I… [sighs]
We have had two full years of peace
since you brought that ship down.
[Trevante] It's not over.
The threat, the aliens. They're not done.
There is no more alien threat.
I feel it, okay?
It's like some sort of fucking itch in
the back of my head that I can't scratch.
[Bryant] After that ship came down,
after you took it down,
we located all 12 alien portals
and sealed them off.
And apart from your return
through the Atlantic portal,
there has been no activity.
Nothing.
And as I mentioned, the hunter-killers
have been retreating to the dead zone.
[Trevante] Dead zone?
[Bryant] Toxic radius around
the mothership crash site.
Uninhabitable.
We lost land, but thanks to you,
we didn't lose the planet.
You've been through
extraordinary hardships.
It is only natural that you
would experience difficulty in re-enter…
I know what PTSD is, General.
And I know your history.
And I know that losing Caspar, a child,
would be especially difficult
given what happened with your own.
This is not that. Okay?
I just… I can't remember,
and I need to, General, please.
We will help you remember.
We'll get you all the help that you need.
As long as it takes.
We will help you scratch that itch
at the back of your head,
and we will help you figure out
what happened up there.
You have my word.
Soldier to soldier.
But we need you to do something first.
[sighs]
I know that you don't feel
like it right now, but you're a hero.
That was your funeral,
watched by more people than anything
in the history of our species.
They mourned you.
Now you're back.
And the world is ready to celebrate you.
That is what the world sees.
That is what the world wants.
And it is what they need.
[reporter] The WDC has announced
that Trevante Cole will be giving
his first public statement
at WDC headquarters in the Americas
where he will be receiving
the highest medal of honor.
Tickets to this prestigious event promise
to be hard to get.
[partner] Maybe you can call
your contacts at the WDC.
Get a ticket to the event?
Or two tickets.
Why would I wanna go to that?
I don't know.
To find answers.
Peace?
I don't need answers.
I don't need anything.
I have peace.
Jam…
You toss and turn
in your sleep some nights.
If this man can help chase away
your nightmares, it's the only chance.
I don't wanna go back to the past.
I don't think you can be fully present
till you finish
whatever's back there first.
- [thunder rumbling]
- [rain pattering]
[Jamila] I held on
to the drawing you made.
I used to think it was
so I wouldn't forget you.
But after a while, I think
really it was so I wouldn't forget me.
The way you saw me.
[sniffles]
[doctor] Step back.
- Madam, step back.
- What's happening to him?
[Jamila] Well, do something.
Stop it. Help him.
[machine beeping]
Casp, come on.
[doctor 2] I'm sorry.
[announcer] Ladies and gentlemen,
if everyone can please get settled
and take their seats,
the event will begin shortly.
[announcer 2, speaking French]
[announcer 3, speaking German]
[announcer 4, speaking Spanish]
[announcer 5, speaking Italian]
[camera shutters clicking]
[in English] Yes, of course,
Prime Minister. Excellent to see you.
Good to see you too.
Why'd you say yes?
Why do you care?
Well, it's my job to care.
To ask questions
when things don't seem… quite right.
All possible threats,
be they alien or…
human.
What is that supposed to mean?
It means when I look at you,
I don't see a hero.
[Zhou] When I first took
office two years ago,
I never dared imagine this day would come.
Trevante Cole and Caspar Morrow were sent
on the most important mission
in the history of the human race.
I see a soldier who came home alone,
having lost one of the world's great
intelligence assets in Caspar Morrow.
It was a mission with
the steepest possible odds of success,
let alone survival.
Yet, succeed they did.
I know your file, Chief Cole
and lo and behold,
you have a history
of being the sole survivor.
[Zhou] Please welcome home Trevante Cole.
[Hollander] Just like
back in Afghanistan with your unit there.
[Trevante] Hello?
Hello!
[aide] We're ready for you.
Thank you, President Zhou.
Thank you to the WDC doctors
who helped ensure my health.
Thank you to everyone here,
everyone watching.
Thank you for the support.
You see, I volunteered two years ago
to go on a mission.
A mission to save our species
because I care about humankind.
And like many of you…
I lost loved ones.
But I did not lose hope.
I did not lose the will
to keep fighting for what I believe.
And today, seeing the world at peace…
He's acting strange.
[Trevante] I can only think of something…
Caspar once said to me.
He said…
[audience murmuring]
[Trevante clears throat]
[breathes heavily] What Caspar said to me…
[breathes heavily] Caspar said…
"You're a soldier…"
"…help us."
[audience gasps, murmurs]
Who said that?
Who said that?
Jamila?
Sir? Sir.
That was me, by the way.
I was the one who said that, not Casp.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry that I couldn't help him.
I'm sorry.
[audience murmurs]
[wistful music plays]
- [audience cheering, whistling]
- [applause]
[door closes]
[Trevante] What are you doing
here, Jamila?
[sighs]
I moved on with my life.
Made my peace
with never knowing what happened up there.
To Caspar.
Never knowing if I could have helped him.
But I have these dreams.
Well, nightmares really, of how he…
The worst possible versions of it.
But now you're back.
You're here, and I thought maybe
you could tell me what really happened?
So that I could sleep easy.
[clicks tongue] I can't. I just…
I can take it. I swear.
[Trevante] No, it's not that. I just…
[sighs] I can't tell you
'cause I don't know.
I don't know what happened.
I… I don't know.
You're saying this because I'm a kid.
You have no idea what I've done.
What I've seen.
There is nothing you could tell me
that would do me more damage
than what I've already been through.
I just… I can't. I can't tell you.
I came all this way for answers.
You're the only person alive
who can give them to me.
So just tell me.
Tell me the truth.
Just tell me the bloody truth!
That is the truth!
Okay?
It's the truth.
I don't remember. All right?
I don't.
You think you have it tough because
you don't know what happened up there?
Imagine how I feel.
Imagine that I got this itch in the back
of my head that I'm never gonna scratch.
And I gotta try my damndest
to fucking live with that fact.
So I suggest that you do the same
because I don't have the bedtime story
that you're looking for, Jamila.
I'm sorry I can't help you.
And I'm sorry I couldn't help Caspar.
- [knocks on door]
- [aide] Time to go.
Coming.
Give me a minute. Thank you.
I'm sorry too.
Caspar…
He would have been
right chuffed you made it.
Actually I think he'd want you
to have something of his.
I've been holding on
to this for years now.
I think it's time I finally let it go.
[Trevante] What is this?
Caspar's EEG readout when he died.
The doctors let me have it.
[screams]
What did you see?
There's something in there.
There's something.
I saw it.
I saw it this time.
I gotta tell the general.
I gotta tell the general.
Just wait here. Don't move.
General!
General.
I'll catch up with you in a moment.
[Trevante] Sir.
I was right. It's not over.
There's something.
Okay? I saw something on the ship.
What do you mean?
I remembered what I saw in there.
Okay? It's some new kind of alien.
Their ship is not dead.
It's… I know it. I know it.
There's been no movement.
Nothing in the portals,
nothing in the dead zone.
- Listen to…
- Chances are
whatever you saw is no longer active.
Listen to me. I heard it.
The sound.
The sound. It's the same sound I heard
when my unit got killed.
When they first came.
And it's happening again.
I know it in my gut.
[partner] This was a bad idea.
Let's just go, Jam.
This was all my fault.
I tried so hard to act normal,
be normal.
For you.
For me. For everyone.
But there's a part of me
that's been trapped in that book
with Caspar's drawing all this time.
[Trevante] Come on, General.
Come on. You know the feeling you get
when you know something's about to happen.
- I do know that feeling.
- Yes.
More soldiers than I can count have come
back from war
and can't shake that feeling.
- No.
- Can't adjust to peacetime.
No. It's not PTSD.
The sound that I heard, it means "attack."
It means something is coming.
It's happening.
You lost your unit
and you lost Caspar Morrow.
This will take time.
And I promise you that I will make sure
that you have that time.
You've upheld your end of the deal,
and I'm gonna get you
the best medical help there is.
To help me remember?
To help you adjust.
I need answers,
and Trevante has them in his head.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's all good.
[partner] Okay.
Okay, let's go get him.
I can't drag you into this.
I've dragged people
into my madness before,
and I can't do it again.
Not to you.
Shit.
I'll, um…
I'll tell them I don't know
where you went.
Because I don't know.
- [Trevante] Fuck.
- Listen to me.
Look, kid, go back to your boyfriend.
You don't wanna come
anywhere near me, all right?
You don't know what I want.
Listen,
anyone that comes near me, they die.
All right? Your friend, Caspar, dead.
My friends in my unit in the desert, dead!
Just stay the fuck away from me.
[Jamila] Listen to me.
- Stay with me.
- [screaming]
Come on. Listen to my voice.
Stay with me.
I've got you, Trev.
I've got you.
[whimpering]
Just breathe.
Hey! No!
- Let go of her!
- [Jamila screaming]
Let go!
[Jamila] Trev.
I know you think you can do this alone,
but you can't.
Setting aside whatever is happening
to you, which is still happening,
what are you gonna do
when you get out there? Huh?
Just walk out through a crowd of people
who came from all over the world
just to get a look at you? Then what? Huh?
[Jamila] Even if you hitch a ride,
take the bus,
you're the most famous face
on the bloody planet.
I have a car.
Okay, so what now? Do you actually have
a plan for how to get answers?
- Where are we going?
- Someone who knows about aliens. Okay?
[line ringing]
- What the hell?
- [Trevante] The WDC could track us.
That's my only connection to Jahan,
my friends, my whole bloody life.
If you're in it, you're in it
all the way and you're off the grid.
You got it?
Didn't need to snatch it
out my hand like that.
Yes, I did. Yes, I did.
Focus on the road.
[phone buzzes, beeps]
You got him?
How the hell could you lose him?
[Hollander] Don't you dare
let them leave the city.
Shut down every airport, train station,
bus stop,
freeway, dirt road
and sewer pipe within a 30-mile radius.
Your big hero just became
the most wanted man on the fucking planet.
["Moonage Daydream" plays]
