100 Code (2015) s01e04 Episode Script

My Only Friend

Detective Conley is tracking a serial killer.
He may have another girl, right now.
You'll thank me, when you save them.
Where is he? - It's the dentitst.
- It's just the beginning.
I trust you.
Hank.
So the brute force crackers are still running at the flash drives, but in the meantime, I found a common link on their computers that took me to the deep web and this message board called Temptations.
I went back and searched the dentist and professor's computers for the name Temptations and found their usernames.
Another round.
Hm Like the one on the kill kit.
Turns out both our guys were probably talking with a real psycho that goes by the username L.
Hoor.
Hoor? Yeah, we say hoor.
Who? In Sweden we say H as hoor.
So it's L.
H.
? Talkin' about what? Your everyday fantasies of torturing, maiming, and killing people.
What, so this is like a support group for serial killers? It's more like a forum to discuss fantasies.
Nobody actually admits doing anything, but it looks like this L.
H.
guy is you know, like, encouraging these weirdos to follow through on whatever fantasies they have and basically do them.
So L.
H.
shows up on these message boards and he tells you those fantasies that you have, they're normal, you should follow through with them, - act upon them, do them.
- Bingo.
All right, we need to track all these users that are interacting with this L.
H.
guy and build a profile on him.
I could take that.
I'd like to get this message board over to a friend of mine at the FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit in Quantico.
Have him build a profile for us.
He'll cut through the red tape.
Do it.
Do we now if L.
H.
is meeting any of these users, these people? You mean make physical contact? - Right.
- I don't know.
We think so, but every time the question comes up the thread ends.
Obviously it has to be picked up somewhere else, so it could be anywhere.
Another message board, chat room, cell phone.
it could be anywhere in the world.
So how do we find him? That's a little tricky.
If you're on the deep web using Tor you can do, like, anything you want without anyone seeing you.
What's Tor? It's a software first made by the American military with the purpose to be anonymous on the internet.
On the deep web it's pretty much impossible to find anyone or any site that doesn't want to be found.
Impossible for most people.
I'll get this fucker.
Just give me time.
There's months of message productivity here but we can't track the conversations all the way back.
There's no way of telling how any of these users were invited to join or how it all starts.
Let's check all these handles with anything we have on record.
Yup.
So these message boards, how many of them are out there? There are probably thousands of them.
Thousands? Yeah, maybe hundreds of thousands even.
Fuck.
A report just came from Lidingo.
There was a couple found.
Mikael, Mikael I think you should see this.
Diamond knots.
Conley, let's go.
Bye.
Killer comes in through the window, subdues Mr.
Soneby with the ligatures then goes after the wife.
Not exactly.
Ms.
Soneby was forced to tie her husband up.
The killer held a karambit knife to her throat.
Took his time to teach her the diamond knots.
Threatened to kill her if she didn't do it right.
He had her to stack plates on Mr.
Soneby's back.
If he moved, if even one plate fell he will kill them both.
Then he took Ms.
Soneby up to the bedroom and did what people like him do.
What's goin' on? What'd he say? It was good, very, very good he says.
So he left this to taunt us? He plays God, that's what he does.
Hey, open.
You think I'm gettin' in this car before you tell me what's goin' on you're back to bein' the cop I thought you were before you went all Sherlock in there.
23 years ago a husband and his wife were killed in the same manner as what happened in there and the killer was a monster by the name Christian Hellstrom.
And he also left a message on the answering machine.
Then he was caught just a couple of days after that.
He left his bloody footprint and then he was tried and sentenced for life in prison.
I was just a young cop.
It wasn't my case or anything, I just started.
Where is he now? First year in prison he killed an inmate, nearly sliced his head off with a piano wire.
So the court found him criminally insane, sent him to a mental institution where he was supposed to stay the rest of his life.
You think he's still there? I don't know.
Could be copycat.
Maybe, but a copycat can only mirror what they know and Hellstrom's messages were never for public.
I only knew about this because I knew the detective on the case.
- Hmm - So whoever did this must have spoken to Hellstrom directly or had an access to the police files.
All right good, let's go.
He still in prison? He's in a mental hospital for criminal insane.
He's been in isolation for four years.
It's L.
H.
You don't mind if I continue to investigate until we have some solid evidence? Yeah, do whatever you want, but it is L.
H.
Mr.
Hellstrom, do you feel any remorse, any shame? See, you keep saying that I killed two innocent people but that would imply that they were alive to begin with.
If one has a life there should be joy and beauty in it, but if one doesn't have that they don't live.
They're nothing.
They hoard and they squander, but they don't live.
You can't kill someone who's already dead.
Yes, but you must understand how people would think that that is insane.
Well, I understand that sinners never see their sins.
You're an intelligent man, educated, a librarian, well read.
You can't honestly believe that what you were doing was a good thing.
If you saw what I saw you would know that what I did was a good thing.
It ends there.
When was this recorded? Five years ago as part of a British study.
It was the only footage I was able to find.
Good job.
- Where was Hellstrom a librarian? - Mariefred.
- And his victims lived in? - The same town? I'll print out the addresses.
Where did the Sonebys live? Lidingo.
See if Hellstrom spent any time in Lidingo.
Ebb and Johnsson, got to Mariefred, interview anyone that remembers anything about Hellstrom and crosscheck everything between Hellstrom's victims and the Sonebys.
Thank you.
What do you think? Mm.
He said, "If you saw what I saw.
" I'm wondering what he saw.
What makes you think that this copycat is one of the others that the dentist was talking about? There's no asphodels, there's no tubes.
There's no connection.
But if we're right about L.
H.
there will be no connection.
The mythology is different, the methods are different.
It's someone else's fantasies.
He's helping them to realize.
In this case it's someone who's trying to be Christian Hellstrom, but the common link is gonna be L.
H.
And what are you asking for? Full access of Hellstrom's correspondence.
Email, phone records, visitor's log, plus you need to make arrangements for us to speak to him.
English.
I said the last thing we want is the media to connect these killings.
Well everyone has been informed that this case is highly classified.
Okay, protect me on that I'll work on it and I'll have it done today.
Hopefully he'll agree to speak with you.
We can't make him.
Pretty posh for a mental hospital.
The garden is for the general population.
Mr.
Hellstrom has been in isolation.
Does he have access to a computer, internet? Not in the last four years.
So it's only two phone calls and no visitors since his mom died, both from the same man, Kevin Sundqvist.
That's correct.
And one on the night when the Soneby's were killed and one about a week before.
What's the protocol on calls? Mr.
Sundqvist sent a virtual request.
We reviewed it, showed it to Mr.
Hellstrom and he wanted permission for the call.
Run a background check? For phone calls we run a check for the name through the database.
As long as there's no criminal background, we clear the request.
Can't fuckin' believe this.
Do you monitor the calls? Even inmates have privacy rights.
Now am I gonna have you a subpoena and monitor all calls.
Now here we are.
This is his cell.
This is a visiting room.
Let's speak English.
I know you speak English.
I suppose my English is much better than your Swedish.
The man you're after, he called me two weeks ago and then again two nights ago well after.
I assume that's why you're here.
Why did he call you? What did he want? Well, on the first call he made it perfectly clear that he knew who I was and that he admired what I had done.
He had wants and needs and he was very passionate about them.
He said he found someone who showed him the way.
Who was this person that showed him the way? I have no idea.
The way to what? Well, the way to be me I suppose.
He wanted to know how I did what I did and why I did it and I told him.
And then I told him about the call afterwards.
You see the importance of the call was for people like you to see that it was a good thing, righteous thing, a blessed thing.
The second time he called was much shorter.
He simply said, "It was good", "it was very, very good.
" Uncomfortable feeling you have.
You're sitting here in the same room with me.
I'm not in the least uncomfortable, just trying hard not to rip your heart out.
I like you.
You're angry, huh? Passion is a good thing, isn't it? - It keeps us alive.
- More than you know.
Oh, I know.
I know very, very well.
Can you tell us more about him? Why would I want to help you? If I helped anyone I would help him.
Did you help him? Well if I did that would make me an accessory to a crime, wouldn't it? Well, what are you going to do? Lock me up? Put me in prison? Take me away from all this? You conducted an interview five years ago and in it you said, "If you saw what I saw," "you'd know it was a good thing.
" What did you see? You're not interested in me, you're interested in him.
But he wants to be you.
If I learn about you, I learn about him.
I'm done talking.
You know I haven't had a visitor for a very long time.
I'm all out of practice.
It's Friday, isn't it? You know, I love Fridays.
All the people who have done nothing all week look for a vacation for having done nothing.
Like the people you killed? Like the Sonebys.
Dead end on Sundqvist.
Big surprise that is.
He said Sonebys.
Sonebys like he knew them, like he knew who they were.
Like he knew them closely.
How did he know their name? Hellstrom tells the copycat to kill the Sonebys Because they were going to be the next victims if he hadn't got caught.
But what if the Sonebys were not the only people on the list, if there are more? Find out why he killed these two and we could work out who the next victims are.
Yeah.
I believe there should be joy and beauty, but if one doesn't have that, they don't live.
They have nothing.
They hoard and they squander.
Stop there.
But they don't li He said they hoard and squander.
Who's he talkin' about? Dante.
You think he talks about Dante? No, no, that's where the hoard and squander comes from.
It's from Dante's Inferno, the fourth circle.
I'm putting it up now.
Their howls were loud while they struck against each other.
At that point each turned and cried, "Why do you hoard?" "Why do you squander?" Who the fuck uses the word squander? He's talking about the greedy, the materialistic, those who take the blessing for granted and those people should be punished in the fourth circle of hell.
Apparently loving the library's a good thing.
So who's greedy and materialistic? Rich people.
Who has enough money to hire a piano teacher without even caring about the piano? And they don't have beauty and joy in life.
If I'm Hellstrom and I love the piano as much as that lady said he did, and I'm watching these rich people hoard and squander instead of enjoying the beauty of music, maybe I think they don't deserve to live.
Sorry, I got something here.
I've been crosschecking victims' family histories and it turns out the Sonebys didn't always live in Lidingo.
Anybody wanna take a guess where they lived 23 years ago? Mariefred? Mm-hm.
His colleague, Mrs.
Ahlmstedt, was the only person we could find in Mariefred who even knew Hellstrom.
They had to pay cash, credit card.
Cash.
If there was a transaction record it would have been found in the initial investigation.
So how do we do it? How do we find who's next on Hellstrom's list of hoarders and squanderers? We ask him.
Ask who? Hellstrom.
But why would he tell us? What's the one thing Hellstrom wants? He wants beauty, he wants joy.
He wants a fucking piano.
You want it? Bring a little joy and beauty into your life? How did you get the hospital to agree? Pulled some strings.
Lie to us, there is no deal.
The only question now is who are you? Are you someone who really would like some joy and beauty in their life or are you just another low-life scumbag who gets off on making people beg for mercy? Which of course is what people think you are.
Well, the Dalbecks were the only other name I gave him.
Dalbecks? You tutored them? - Yes.
- You know the address? Of course.
You might want to hurry.
There's no answer.
We'll try again on the way.
I'll drive.
- He's in there.
- I'm goin' up.
You fuckin' stay.
Stay! Conley! You got it? He's goin' out back, in the woods! Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop! Get away from him! - Get away from him! - Shoot him! I got him.
Call the paramedics.
He's gone.
What? - No.
- He's gone.
Fuck! Are you okay? Yeah.
Yeah.
Como? J'ai un livres un pour vous.
Merci
