[gasps.]
Oh-ho! Aha-ha! Come here! [giggling.]
Gotcha! [screams.]
[panting.]
It was just a dream.
Hmm? [screams in panic.]
[takes deep breath.]
It was just a freaky-deaky dream within a dream.
Still, I should have Clover shark-proof this room.
Yes, you're right.
That morning was the last time I ever saw my parents.
[creaks.]
Oh, well, now that you mention it, I suppose their disappearance has kinda, sorta haunted me relentlessly every day of my life.
But they're here now! I don't think they're ever leaving.
Mother! Big Papi! - I'm so excited you guys are back! - [both squeal.]
Ugh, yes, good to see you too, old boy.
As you know, your mother and I have obligations elsewhere.
What do you mean? Maurice, what do they mean? [clears throat.]
Your parents and I have negotiated our agreement for their monthly allowance.
Everything should be in order by tomorrow and they are free to go.
You're leaving? [sobs.]
- Your Majesty, are you all right? - [blows raspberry.]
What a silly question! Of course I'm all right.
My parents who I haven't seen in years are leaving before I've even gotten to know them.
Why wouldn't I be all right? All right! Why? Tell me! Please, 'cause I really want to know, Maurice! Oh, now.
Stiff upper lip, old boy.
Can't have you blubbering like some Italian widow.
[whimpering.]
But, you haven't even tried the waterslide.
You can't leave without getting your butts wet.
There, there.
We've had a wonderful time.
Truly.
But we hate it here and wish to leave.
- Mark? - [rings bell.]
[grumbles.]
It's "Maurice.
" And I'm standing right here.
Please pack our things so we may go.
Huh.
[sarcastically.]
I thought you'd never ask.
Maurice! I know saying goodbye is hard, but trust me, everybody will be happier when they're gone.
And I mean everybody.
Like, literally everybody.
Everybody! Even Willie? Everybody.
Even Dorothy? Everybody! Even Hector? Every Actually, Hector really seems to like them.
But other than Hector, everybody! I understand.
You're not going.
- What? - What? You are not getting your allowance until you read me a bedtime story.
I have no idea what that is, but it sounds like it requires us to do something.
I want a bedtime story like I never got as a child.
I read you a bedtime story every night when we were kids.
And a couple of nights last week.
[grumbles.]
Maurice! This is a family A-B conversation.
So could you family C your way out of it? Huh? Oh.
You're reading me a bedtime story! I'm the king, that's the law! Shaboosh! "And then the wolf says, 'All the better to see you with.
'" Cut! Cut! It's all wrong.
Where's the passion? This is the Big Bad Wolf we're talking about here, peoples! We need to feel the bigness and the badness! Going again from the top.
Back to one.
Eh Ugh.
"'Grandmother, what big teeth you have!' And the wicked wolf replied, 'All the better to eat you up with!'" [laughs maniacally.]
[gasps.]
Oh, snap! Girl, that ain't your grandmother! Get up out that house! Get up out that house! No, no, no [Clover grunting.]
Your Majesty, I've been looking all over for you.
And you found me here in the place that I live.
[sarcastically.]
Wow.
Way to close the big case, detective.
[chuckling.]
- Very well done.
- [chuckling.]
Ooh.
Aha! You have a full slate of royal activities this week.
Hold, please.
Important state business I have to see to immediately.
Postpone all my royal activities.
[laughing.]
I'm gonna have the childhood I never had.
Oof! [sighs.]
Ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha-ha! I am doing it! I'm learning to ride a bicycle! [groans.]
I am invincible! Let go, Papi, I'm ready to fly! Good show, old boy! Now you're on the trolley! Ding-ding, dear.
[laughing.]
[screaming.]
[crashes.]
Perhaps we might try something a bit simpler.
[laughing gleefully.]
Higher! Higher! Ha-ha! Higher! - Tally ho, then! - [screaming.]
[crashes.]
Good form, boy! [giggling.]
[giggling.]
Oh, Barty! You simply must try this, dear.
Room for one more? - Whee! - [screaming.]
[crashes.]
[Julien.]
Why do we keep doing activities next to this cliff? I can't believe we've never played catch before.
[groans.]
Imagine that.
Give me a long one, Papi.
I want to go deep.
Deep it is.
[screaming.]
[crashes.]
My, that sounded painful.
- Are you injured, old sport? - [groaning.]
Oh, dear! Do you have a fever? [sighs in relief.]
You're touching me, Mommy? Of course, sweetie.
Just don't expect me to make a habit of it.
We're just glad our little captain of industry is A-OK.
You're resting your hand on my arm, Papi! Yes, well, in all the excitement I seem to have misplaced my touching stick.
Ever since King Julien reunited with his parents - it's like there's nothing to do.
- [Mort humming.]
It's quite amazing how much of our time is spent keeping him out of trouble and cleaning up his messes.
I still don't like him getting this close with his parents.
Sadly, not much we can do about it.
We could get rid of them.
Make it look like an accident? I know a guy No, Mort, we're not [sighs.]
What is wrong with you? Probably lots of stuff.
Maybe this free time will be good for us.
We can do the things we've never had time to do because we're too busy protecting King Julien from himself.
- Like what? - I don't know.
Hobbies.
Catching up with friends and family and stuff.
I like to make wigs out of stolen hair.
[sighs.]
Unfortunately, my hobby as far as I can remember has been taking care of King Julien.
He's pretty much the only family I've got.
And I've outlived all my relatives! [giggles.]
Okay, forget family.
We're all friends, we should hang out.
I heard about this great show tonight we could go to.
- [Maurice whimpering.]
- [bell rings.]
[crowd cheering.]
- [grunting.]
- [groaning.]
Oh.
Don't you just love community theater? [chuckles.]
Gouge out his eyes! Gouge 'em, you Pollyanna! [Mort.]
Kill him! - Hu-ya! - [groans.]
They're hurting each other for our enjoyment.
Yeah! [laughs.]
Yeah! Okay, it's been fun bonding, but it looks like the show's over.
- Dang.
Just when it was getting good.
- [giggling.]
Looks like the next match is starting.
- [grunting.]
- [crowd cheering.]
- Well, ahem.
Wish me luck.
- Eh - Did you know Clover was fighting tonight? - Yeah No.
Wait, who's Clover? - [bell dinging.]
- [squealing.]
- Tah! [grunting.]
- [groaning.]
- [Clover.]
Hai! - [groaning, whimpering.]
- [Clover squealing.]
- [groaning.]
- [groans.]
- [screams.]
[crowd gasps.]
Oh, my I think I had a little accident.
Hmm? A big accident.
I had fun today.
With practice, you two could be totally out-of-control party monsters.
Yes, today was, uh not the worst day of my life either.
Aw, you really mean it? That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me! Sleep tight, dear.
Well, the boy's a good egg.
Yes.
Though I fear he may become attached, if we stay much longer.
We should hurry to collect our allowance from that nincompoop Mark.
Maurice! - Did you hear something? - Never mind that.
By this time tomorrow, we'll be back to our fabulous lives.
And we'll never have to interact with these ugh normal lemurs again.
[whimpering.]
[speaking gibberish.]
[continues speaking gibberish.]
Mort, why are you talking backwards? [humming.]
Huh? [continues humming.]
Seriously? You care about his dancing, but not mine? Watch me dance! Please! It's all I ever wanted from you.
[humming.]
[exclaims.]
[screams.]
[panting.]
[sighs in relief.]
No shark.
- [roars.]
- [screams.]
[panting.]
I've called you here today because I had a crazy dream last night.
No good conversation has ever started this way.
Oh-ooh! Was I in your dream? Hmm? Unfortunately, you were.
What? Do you really mean I [stammering.]
I'm okay.
I just need to take a knee.
Ah-oh So, because of this dream, I've had a brilliant idea in my mind junks.
An idea so ginormously epic, it will make up for every moment of my life that my parents ever missed.
We're gonna re-create the dance recital they missed when I was a kid! [mimicking.]
"Oh, man, that's great idea, King Julien!" "You're really handsome, smart and everyone looks up to you!" "You inspire me every day!" Okay.
Calm down, everybody.
You're embarrassing the king.
Perhaps seeing your son dropping booty to the floor and making the ground quake will help you to realize this is where you were meant to be.
With me.
[Maurice clears throat.]
You two are probably looking forward to getting back to your lives, right? Away from all us normal lemurs.
Well I suppose if that's what's important to you, we could watch you "drop booty to the floor.
" And it's not as if we can go anywhere until our finances are squared away.
Yes, yes, bring on the "ground quake"! Huzzah! Perfect! Mo-Mo, this performance has to be special if it's gonna impress my parents.
I need the best choreographer in the kingdom.
I'll be honest, I'm gonna do what I can to train you.
But I'm a choreographer, not a dad-gum professor at wizard school! I cannot do actual magic.
I can't! Let's see what I'm working with.
You got weird thumbs.
The way you're standing right now makes me wanna puke and sit in it.
You smell like ear wax! Your feet are ridiculously small.
[Julien giggling.]
Whoa! And you.
I see a lot of potential in you, is something I would never say! Because you're awful! Five, six, seven, eight! Do you think King Julien's parents will show up this time? I sure hope so.
They've made it clear the only thing keeping them here is their monthly allowance.
But if you don't give them their allowance until after the dance recital, they'll have to attend.
Exactly.
And this guy's got that under control.
They aren't getting a thing until I say so.
Up top! Maurice for the win! Yeah! Mort, I've already told you everything.
Please, King Julien.
I must hear more about this dream.
You danced around and made everyone uncomfortable with how weird you are.
Ah! Pretty crazy, huh? You dreaming about me.
My, how the tables have turned.
[laughs.]
Huh? [groans.]
- Maurice, I have good news.
- You've called off the recital? I said "good news," Maurice, not "the most horrible tragedy that has ever happened to our kingdom.
" Maurice, how could you even suggest such a thing? Ow! You know how you've been dragging your feet on getting my parents' monthly mango allowance sorted out? Well, I took care of it.
Why would you do that? They asked me to because you were taking too long.
Your Majesty, that was a huge mistake! Well, I'm sorry if we're not all Stingy Stephanies like you, Maurice! But they said they really needed those free mangoes to support their extravagant, child-free lifestyle, whatever that means.
Your parents are only staying here long enough to get their allowance.
I heard them say it last night.
Wait.
You're saying, the only reason my parents are spending time with me is so they can get their mangoes and move on? I'm sorry, King Julien.
Wow.
Really? You're so threatened by them that you'd make up all this drama to drive a wedge between us? Uh ugh Pretty low, Maurice.
Even for you.
Ow! King Julien, Maurice might be right.
[exclaims in disgust.]
You too, Clover? I'm surrounded by haters, doubters and second-guessers! I am not a hater, King Julien.
I am a lover.
[grumbling.]
Mort, that's almost worse! [screaming.]
Ow, ow, ow, ow [groans in pain.]
Ow! My parents love me! And if you two are jealous, too bad.
I don't need you.
I'm a grown-up lemur with a mommy and daddy who love him and read him stories! [stammers.]
You've got this all wrong.
No, Maurice, you've got it all wronger! They'll be at my recital.
[Barty grunting.]
[screams.]
- Mark? - My name's not Mark! Barty, what's Mark doing here? Did we ring the bell? [laughs.]
Old sport, if this is about the little soaps and shampoo bottles and the robes and the selection of mixed nuts we took from the room, I'll have you know we believed those were gifts.
While you're here, perhaps you could lend a hand in packing.
We need to get these into these.
As quickly as possible, Mark.
You can't leave until after you watch King Julien dance.
This was special to him.
He went to a choreographer and everything.
She hit him.
Like, a bunch of times.
Oh, the boy's been fine without us all these years.
I doubt he'll even notice.
He's pulled himself up by the bootstraps and made something of himself.
A true riches-to-more-riches story.
[laughs.]
I'm begging you.
Please stay for Julien's recital.
It would mean the world to him.
Well, when you put it that way, what choice do we possibly have but to say no, it's still a no.
Wha-what-what! Da-da-dub-dub-dub-DJ Glitterbuns! If y'all are ra-rup-rup-ready to get funky! Make some noise! - [crowd cheering loudly.]
- [upbeat music playing.]
I can't hear you! [electronic voice.]
It's an invasion, you snitches! [horn blaring.]
[sighs.]
They're not coming, are they? [both sigh.]
They said they would be here.
Why would they get the royal hopes up and then stomp all over the royal dreams? [whimpers.]
I'm sorry, King Julien.
Me, too.
[sniffles.]
- Well, I'll go scatter the crowd.
- [sighs.]
No, my peoples came to see me stomp the yard, and it would not be very kingly of me to leave the yard un-stomped.
[grumbles.]
You ready, King Julien? I don't know.
Bless your heart, but I wasn't really asking.
You get out there right now or you're gettin' the paddle! [indistinct chattering.]
[sighs.]
[humming.]
[whimpering.]
[screams.]
[Mort humming.]
Oh-ho Hoo Shark! Oh [groans.]
Oh [whimpering.]
Whoa! Argh! [crowd murmuring.]
[sobbing.]
This is not what we practiced.
Get back out there or I will put you up for adoption! What? It's how I motivate Todd.
But seriously, you're embarrassing me! I can't do it with my parents' empty chairs out there.
Look again, honey, they ain't empty.
- Yay! - Mwah! Huh? Aww.
Yay! Yeah [funk music playing.]
[humming.]
[crowd cheering.]
[upbeat music playing.]
[laughing.]
Ah.
Ah, ah.
Huh? Uh - [screams.]
- [crashes.]
Eh, yay! [crowd cheering.]
[exclaims.]
Aha-ha-ha! That was fantastic.
Your performance got a bit inappropriate in the middle, but otherwise, fantastic.
Don't listen to her, the middle was the best part.
Hey.
Did I get eaten by a shark earlier? Thanks for being there for me, you guys.
Making that booty clap just wouldn't mean as much without you there to share it.
I'm sorry you didn't get the kind of family you deserve.
You're right.
I didn't.
I got you guys.
Oh.
You're the best family a king could ever have hoped for.
- [Mort screams.]
- You make me tingly all over, for reals.
Especially you.
Hmm? When I was up there on that stage today, I realized you've always been there for me, even when my parents weren't.
What's everybody looking at? Are your eyes getting a bit moist, Maurice? Oh, you getting a little lump in your throat, buddy? No.
Why? Whoa, hey.
[chuckles.]
If you're trying to imply that I'm overly emotional or that I cry at the drop of a hat, then [giggling.]
Guys, guys, check it.
Say, Mo-Mo? Did I tell you that I had a near death experience when the Mega Gecko exploded? Oh, yeah! Your face was the last thing I saw before I lost consciousness.
My dying wish? That I could hear your laughter just one last time.
[cries loudly.]
There! You happy? You got me crying! [continues crying.]
What do you want from me? I'm an emotional lemur! I have feelings! [giggling.]
Maurice has feelings.
[laughs.]
Your Majesty, I know it [clears throat.]
I know it hurts that your parents are gone, but, personally, I'm very happy we won't be seeing Barty and Julienne for a very long time.
- Huh? - Huh? Eh Mother? Big Papi? You came back! Your jitterbugging was tip-top out there, old boy! Oh, thank the gods! If you had missed the recital, it would have been completely meaningless.
What about all that stuff you just said about us being your family? That was back when I thought they were gone forever.
Now they're back, and I'm free to blow off the valuable lesson I just learned.
We forgot a few items.
But then we thought, while we're here, we may as well attend this pointless thing our son is excited about.
So we slipped in the back and saw the whole shebang.
We realized if our son wants to debase himself like some Vaudeville guttersnipe, we need to respect that.
Well, that's great.
I guess you can just be on your way, then.
Buh-bye! No! We thought we might extend our holiday.
I don't know.
King Julien's pretty busy.
And I'm sure you guys have a lot of nothing to get back to.
Oh! Bring it in! [both groaning.]
Little less.
Not so good.
Okay, that's enough.
Oh.
You gotta be kidding me.
[giggling.]
[jazz music plays.]
