Baywatch (1989) s01e20 Episode Script

The Big Race

1 - Some people stand in the darkness afraid to step into the light some people need to help somebody when the edge of surrender's in sight don't you worry it's gonna be all right 'cause I'm always ready I won't let you out of my sight I'll be ready I'll be ready never you fear no, don't you fear I'll be ready forever and always I'm always here 'Cause I'm always ready I won't let you out of my sight I'll be ready I'll be ready never you fear no, don't you fear I'll be ready forever and always I'm always here -Woo hoo! -Good morning.
-Morning.
-An hour late, I think you're starting to make a habit out of this.
-Sorry.
I took lunch over to Jill's parent's house, and I guess we just got to talking.
-So how are they? -They're okay, I guess.
-Do me a favor.
Next time, take them breakfast.
That way you'll be on time.
-Very funny.
-Thank you.
-Help! Help! -Call it in.
Hey, lifeguards! A little kid's drowning out here.
Help! -Are you okay? All right, next time, don't go out so far, all right? Okay.
Hey, what's up? -My leg cramped up.
-Let's get you back to the tower and stretch it out, all right? So you want to tell me what this is all about? Nope, my business, Eddie.
You do know how to open this, don't you? -Hey, hey, hey, I didn't volunteer for this job.
You dragged me, remember? -Just hurry, okay? -Who is she? -Sorry.
New help.
So you were saying? -Well, we lost federal funding last year, and now the state's cutting back.
We applied for a Grant, but that takes months.
We just can't keep the home running any longer.
I thought of the one decent man I knew who could help me.
So here I am.
-So what do you need? 10,000 dollars.
Excuse me.
-I realize that's more than your usual contribution, but, you know, we have 27 patients with nowhere to go if we shut down.
Unless you have room in your mansion.
-You'll get the money.
Of course, I will have to run it by my accountant first.
You have no idea what a burden this has been.
-Well, you just put your fears to rest.
John Cort III will get you that money.
Yeah.
-10,000? Where are you gonna get that kind of money? -I don't know, but I'll get it.
I've been donating five grand a year up to now.
I've always found a way to get that.
-5,000 dollars a year? -Yeah, it's for a good cause.
You know, it might not hurt you to find one either.
-Yeah, but five grand? You can't afford that.
-Come on.
When has that ever stopped me? We'll figure something out.
-Listen, why don't you just tell her the truth, huh? -I can't do that.
It would crush her.
Besides, those old folks need me.
-They don't need you.
They need John Cort III.
We should get out of here before the owners return, huh? Mm Not a word about this to anybody, please.
No one.
-You got it man.
-Thanks.
-Oh, yeah, I got some friends downtown that have a boat in that race.
Goes to Catalina? -And back.
60 miles.
-60 miles in under an hour.
On a water ski.
-Close to do 100 miles an hour.
-Man, you couldn't pay me enough.
-No, I bet its safe.
As long as you don't fall.
-You know what? I need to know how much equity I've got in.
-Seriously, a guy fell off and fractured his skull.
-Guys, could you all hold it down, please? I'm trying to make a phone call here.
-Well, look, I gotta go anyway.
I'll catch you guys later.
-What encumbrances? Look, if I sell the shop, how much is left over? 3,000 dollars? That's only a start.
Yeah.
No, it's okay.
Thanks.
-Swimmers only.
Move to the next tower.
-Miss, could you get our ball? -Got away from you, huh? -Right there.
-Yeah.
-Where's my ball? -The current's taking it away.
-But it's right there.
-I'm sorry.
-Hey! -Just in time.
I hope you guys brought your paint brushes.
-No, we brought something else.
-What's that? 3,000 dollars? What is this? -Take it.
You need it.
That's all we need to know.
We hope it helps.
-Uh, I can't take this.
I mean, this is incredible, but I can't take your cash.
-Don't take it.
Borrow it.
Besides, we're kind of paying you back for taking the fall after the fraternity trip.
-That was eleven years ago.
-Seems like yesterday.
-My point is we all took the boat.
-And brought it back.
-With girls.
-You know, I can think of a couple of reasons why you ought to pack up and leave, believe me.
But, uh, we've been talking.
We kind of like you to stick around a little longer.
-We'll charge you interest if it makes you feel any better.
-Yeah.
-I'm good for this.
You guys don't have anything to worry about.
-Fair enough.
-What should we charge him? 15? 20? -Excuse me.
It's okay if I hang this up in here? -Yeah, depends on what it is.
-Oh, it's for the avalon ski race.
Whoa, 15 grand! -Yeah.
There's some tape right over there.
Hang it on the front window.
-Thanks.
Fifteen-grand.
-Speedboat? You took our money and you bought a speedboat? -Not just any speedboat.
I mean, this sucker's got a customized engine like you've never seen.
-Ooh, cool boat! I bet it's really fast.
-There's not a boat on the water that can touch it.
-It's too bad you're going to have to take it back.
-Can't do that.
It was a used boat.
The sale was final.
-Great thinking.
That way you have to keep it.
-Truth is I need more money than what you gave me, and I'm gonna get it.
-By buying a boat? -I know what I'm doing, trust me.
Okay, gang.
-Well, it's colorful.
-Yeah.
-Do you mind if I go aboard? -Sure, go right ahead.
Oh, you guys, when hear this baby run, you're gonna be choking on your words.
-This is a totally awesome boat, dad.
-Yes, that's the Terminator right over there.
That's the one we gotta look out for.
She's won it two years running.
-Makes the baywatch boat look like a steamer.
At least one guy here knows what he's talking about, right, Hobie? -Well, John, you've really done it this time.
This is the most ridiculous scheme you've ever gotten me into.
-It's a grueling race, you gotta know what you're doing.
Guys go out and get smashed up every year.
-Come on, guys, for 15 grand, I can do anything for an hour.
Let's go, this will be fun.
-Hurry up, stoker, we got to gas it up.
-Woo, music to my ears! Yes! Hobie, get out, get out.
Look at that.
-What have we got here, boys? A good fire, and I didn't bring any weenies.
-So what are we looking at out here? -You got a blown head gasket.
You're down to about 15 pounds in two and three.
-How long is it gonna take to fix it? -Depends.
What you really need is an overhaul.
This engine's packing a lot more power than it was meant to.
It's bored out way over spec.
We'd want to get it blueprinted? Of course we send the heads out to get machined.
Probably have you fixed up in four, five weeks.
-Terrific, the race is in five days.
-Great boat Cort bought.
I can't wait that long.
-You're gonna have to.
I got lots of work ahead of you.
-I just bought this boat yesterday.
-So take it back.
-It doesn't have a warranty.
-I'm surprised.
-No warranty.
-Guys, for three grand I wasn't going to get the queen Mary.
I had to take my chances.
And what's the absolute minimum it's gonna take to get this thing running? -Well, I could replace the head gasket and the few burned out wires, but it's just a patch up job.
You'd have to take it real easy.
-I wanna be in this race.
I'll figure something out.
Get out of our boat.
-Well, now it's our boat? -Our boat.
-Yeah, tower 18 just found him.
He's crying for mama.
Thanks.
-I thought you had a tower assignment today.
-Yeah, I traded with Newman.
-McClain, I'm a little concerned about you.
Lately your work has been less than satisfactory.
You've been late, you've been getting out of assignments.
And that rescue with Kramer.
-My leg cramped up.
-Yeah.
You know, it's funny what the mind can make the body do.
Shauni, you're not the first lifeguard to lose a friend.
I know you and Jill were very close.
And you were there when it all happened.
See, nobody could possible expect you not to be affected.
-I am fine, really.
-Sure.
But maybe it'd be best if you stayed off the beach for a while.
I will have you reassigned here to headquarters.
Give yourself time to work things out.
-There's nothing to work out.
McClain, you're a good lifeguard, but you're not a machine.
Just give it some time.
-I'm about set to pull the head off here, I could use a hand.
-You could use a brain, maybe you wouldn't have bought this boat.
-We're never gonna get this thing back together again unless you read this, look at this.
-Let me see that.
-So what do you think you're gonna do with all the money you think you're going to win? -Besides paying us back.
-Told you, you guys, it's personal.
-Personal? -It was personal until you spent our money and made us partners.
-We're not letting you out of our sight until this race is over.
-Great, I could use someone to tow me anyway.
-Well, there's nothing I'd rather do than drag you to Catalina and back.
How about you? -Give me the book.
I'll do the reading.
-All right.
-Is there a picture of this thing in there? -That looks familiar.
-I think it goes like that.
Wait, wait, no, it's like-- -it was a great dinner.
-You know, he acted like I was being irresponsible.
It made me so mad.
-He doesn't think you're irresponsible, Shauni.
He's just worried about you.
-Then why do I have to stay at headquarters? -I don't know.
Maybe he just wants to give you some time away from the beach.
I don't know why you're complaining.
I thought you wanted to work at headquarters.
-What is that supposed to mean? -Every chance you get, you've been working there.
-So you agree with captain Thorpe? -You have been late a lot.
-I've been busy with school.
-Shauni, you've been taking your workouts at the y, not the beach.
-The pool is heated, Eddie! Hey! Baby, I'm on your side.
I just want you to be happy.
-And I just want you to believe me.
Look, I miss Jill.
I miss her a lot.
And I think about her, but that's all.
I'm fine, okay? -Okay.
-Good.
-Good.
Here you go big guy.
Pink? -Yeah.
Hey, it's a nice one, right? -Think you'll make it out of the Marina this time? I hear you guys signed up for the big race.
-Yep.
-That's too bad.
I was kind of hoping for some competition this year.
So how far do you think this pile is going to take you? -Only gotta go to the finish line, my friend.
-Oh, really? Then you better pack some oars.
Row, row, row.
-That is a funny man.
-He wants a race.
We'll give him a race.
-Come on, macho man, give me the ski.
-Trust me, my man.
Trust me.
Okay, let's test this baby out.
-Hey, he looks great.
-Woo hoo! Yeah! -It sounds good.
-Yeah.
-Come on, hit it! Come on, baby! Woo hoo! -Come on! He wants more speed.
Let's give it a run.
-You got it.
-Woo! Yes! -Yeah! -Up, up, up! Come on! -Watch out for it! -Oh! He's down.
Yeah! -I don't see him.
-There.
On the right.
-He must've hit hard.
There's his life jacket -I'm going in.
-All right.
-I don't see him.
-There! Over there, right there! Okay, I got him.
Okay.
One, two, three.
He's breathing.
Dr.
Fitzgerald to ccu.
Dr.
Fitzgerald to ccu.
Hey.
I heard what happened.
How's he doing? -He's with the doctor now.
-You're a lucky man.
Somehow I don't feel so lucky.
-Well, a couple of cracked ribs, some bruises, but not bad for the spill you took.
I've treated some skiers that weren't so fortunate.
-Yeah, well, when can I get out of here, doc? -Anytime.
Here, you'll want that for the pain.
And you won't be doing any skiing for a while.
Terrific.
-Thanks, doc.
-No problem.
-Hey, buddy.
How you doing? -Oh, looks like I really screwed up this time.
Guys, I'll do whatever it takes.
I'll sell the boat, I'll sell the shop, whatever.
You'll get your money back.
-We're your friends.
You got a problem, talk to us.
-Not this time.
-Wait a minute.
You just can't walk out on us.
Did you hear what he said? We're your friends.
Besides we got a stake in this.
We got money in this man, and we are in.
We're in.
-Wait, wait, wait.
We got a problem.
Who's going to take the place on the ski? -You are.
-Are you crazy? -Come on, Craig, you're a great skier.
-To Catalina and back? -You can do it.
-I'm a weekend skier, recre-- piece of cake.
-You're in terrific shape.
You run every day, you swim every day, you got great balance on the surf board.
Besides, you're the only one of us who will look really good out there.
-He's got a point.
-What do you say, Craig? -I know I'm gonna regret this.
-All we need is a little bit more power, just enough to give us the advantage.
-Look, I'll tell you the same thing I told my boys down at the station.
I don't know anything about boats, I don't wanna know anything about boats.
Now leave me alone.
-Wait, wait.
You don't have to know anything about boats.
This is about engines.
You know engines.
This engine just happens to be in a boat.
-This is not like you, Mitch.
I don't understand how you let Cort talk you into this.
-Cort says he needs the money, that's all I know.
-Cort says he needs the money? -Yeah.
-What? -I used to work bunko.
You know what we call guys like you? Victims.
-He's serious this time, and so am I.
Now I need your help.
What do you say? In it to win it in it let's go and yeah in it to win it when we're representing in it to win it so let's go and get it now Everybody needs a second chance or third for a start a do over again oh, yeah everybody wants to rule the world while playing the part of more than a friend oh, yeah no holding back now that the stakes are high oh, oh in it to win it when we're representing in it to win it so we're unrelenting in it to win it so let's go and get it now in it to win it when we're representing in it to win it so we're unrelenting in it to win it so let's go and get it now let's go and get it now Let's go and get it now -yeah.
-It didn't even have the throttle wide open.
-Really? -It's got a lot of power pumping me right up on the ski.
It glides in a nice smooth way.
-I'm telling you, gang.
I think we got a winner here.
-I'm telling you, I think we got a chance against this stoker guy.
-John? -Gwen? Hi.
It's not easy finding you.
I went down to your yacht, but some people there said that they owned it.
-Yacht? You mean his boat.
This is a boat.
It's a fast boat, though.
-Uh, I was in the area.
I just wondered if you talked to your accountant yet.
-Look, why don't we, uh, go over here? -Aren't you going to introduce us to your friend? -Yeah.
Gwendolyn Pierce this is-- -hi, I'm Mitch Buchannon.
-And Craig Pomeroy.
Nice to see you.
We all work together.
-Oh, in real estate or at the record company? -Uh -Uh, maybe we should let John explain that.
-It's real complicated.
-It's getting more complicated by the moment.
-Seems to be.
-Yeah, sure is.
Why don't I call you later? -I just wanted to ask you about the donation.
Donation? -To the convalescent home.
John what's going on here? What are you doing here? -Oh, he owns the place.
-He lives here.
-Yeah, I live here.
-The Beverly Hills tycoon, Mr.
John d.
Cort III lives here? -Yeah.
All those years you lied to me? -Well, i-- Come on, Shauni, it's a piece of cake.
There's nothing to worry about.
I'm gonna be there.
Come on.
This is really stupid, Eddie.
-Uh-huh.
See I told you.
-A little more.
You know, come on.
You know, I had a friend.
He's afraid of flying, right? So we went to this airport.
A little airport at our place-- -Eddie.
I hate to break it to you, but I'm not afraid of the water.
-How about a workout? -You serious? -Yeah.
-Well, actually, I already took mine.
-So why don't you go ahead? -Okay.
-Okay.
Knock yourself out.
-Eddie.
Eddie? Eddie! Eddie.
Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! -It's okay, I got you.
-All right, just relax.
Relax.
Everything's going to be fine.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's all right.
It's okay, it's okay.
Oh, baby, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
-Let me get some ice on that.
-No ice.
-Heating pad? -Gwen, I'm fine.
-What is this? A minute ago, you were going to kill the guy.
-A minute ago, I wasn't thinking.
If you weren't who you said you were, I don't know how you could afford to make those contributions? -Guys, I'm sorry.
I owe you all an explanation.
I've gone about this whole thing wrong right from the beginning.
-Why that much money and why her convalescent home? -You don't have to answer it.
And if you tell me you can't help out right now, that's fine too.
I mean, 10,000 dollars is a lot of money, and you've done more than enough already.
-Is that why you wanted to sell the dive shop? Why win the race? -Yeah.
Yeah, for Gwen and And for my uncle Stan.
-Mr.
Cooper? -Yeah.
Yeah, you guys never knew him, but Uh, he raised me.
He didn't do a very bang up job of it.
I mean, we never got along.
We fought like cats and dogs, and I finally left.
A few years ago, I got like a word that-- well, he was starting to lose it.
I couldn't afford to put him in a fancy place.
And I didn't want to stick him in some state-run warehouse.
So I found this little convalescent home run by this Very nice charity.
-Ours.
-Yeah.
-When was the last time you saw uncle Stan? Listen, Mitch.
I really appreciate you coming with me.
It's okay.
Go on in.
-I thought you'd be down at the Marina with everybody else.
-I got some stuff to do here.
-Going on vacation? I'm leaving baywatch.
-What did Mitch have to say about that? -I haven't told him yet.
I haven't told anybody except you.
-This doesn't have anything to do with Jill, does it? You know, I really thought I could handle it.
I can't even go in the water now.
I keep thinking about her.
-I lost my partner about ten years ago.
Routine traffic stop, middle of the day.
Went up to the car, guy came running down the street, pulled a gun, bam! The next thing I knew, my partner was dead.
The guy came out of nowhere.
He was loaded.
Thought we were after him.
We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Simple as that.
Everywhere I went after that, I thought someone was going to kill me.
Finally, I had to get off the street.
I just couldn't take it anymore.
I kept thinking about my partner the same way you keep thinking about Jill.
-So what did you do? -Well, people told me to just climb back up on my horse and try it again.
But it's just not that easy now.
I guess I just gave it time, Shauni.
And put it behind me as best I could.
I still think about him, though.
He was a great guy.
-I miss Jill.
-I do, too.
Just remember, whatever you finally decide, you have not failed here.
You have made a difference.
-Thanks, garner.
Sure.
Welcome to the 42nd annual running of the avalon ski race.
Gentlemen, start your engines.
- Start the engines, time to fire it up bring it on, fire the gun rising up and the crowd erupts bring it on, here I come yeah oh I'm gonna race you to the finish line I'll take the win and steal the spotlight I'm gonna race you to the finish line go the distance 'cause we're made for speed here I come, number one ain't no one out there to compete with me bring it on 'cause I'm the one and now oh I'm gonna race you to the finish line I'll take the win and steal the spotlight I'm gonna race you to the finish line woo ooh Woo ooh oh I'm gonna race you to the finish line I'll take the win and steal the spotlight I'm gonna race you to the finish line yeah yeah I'm gonna race you to the finish line yeah I'm gonna race you to the finish line I'm gonna race you to the finish line -Hello? What am I doing? Help! Somebody! Please! Help! There.
It's my little girl.
She went out too far.
Can you help her? Please, somebody.
Hurry! Is she breathing? -I got a pulse, but she's not breathing.
Way to go, newmie.
-You're gonna be okay.
-Truly, amazing.
One minute, you're trying to stay away from the beach and the next, you're working somebody else's tower.
That's good work.
-I was so scared, Eddie.
What if I am always gonna be scared? -Hey.
There's plenty to be afraid of, you know.
Listen, Shauni, I blew it the other day.
I pushed you to go in, and you weren't ready.
I'm really sorry.
How about a lift to headquarters? I'm supposed to be at the lost children's desk at ten o' clock, and I don't want to be late.
Let's go.
As the field enters the half way point at avalon harbor, it's still anybody's race.
And as they round the buoy and head back to San Pedro, about a dozen boats are fighting for the lead.
They are still bunched together with boat number 26 going to the lead.
That's Craig Pomeroy.
-Here we go.
Come on, baby! He's down, he's down.
-You went down.
-There he is, right there.
Stoker, grab the line.
-You okay? -I'm caught in the net.
Come cut me loose.
-Okay, hang on, I got you.
-I'm free.
Come on, let's go.
-One more.
Okay, okay.
-Hang on.
-You all right? -Yeah.
-Here's the rope.
-Come on! Hit it! Come on! Come on! -Turn it down a little.
We need more speed.
-Come on baby, come on.
-Come on.
All right! Coming in! -Turn it down more if you can.
-Come on! Come on baby! -I see them.
It's a full-fledge sprint to the finish with boats 26 and 99 pushing to the lead.
-Come on.
-It's all the way down.
-Take the wheel.
-Come on! Yes! Boat 26 has done it.
Craig Pomeroy has crossed the 25-mile gorge and is the winner.
What a race this has been.
Yeah! All right, yeah! -Congratulations.
-Told you so.
15,000 buckers.
-Do we get to keep the boat, dad? -No, we don't get to keep the boat.
What doesn't go to the rest home buys us out.
Thank you very much, John.
-Sorry, guys, there's another race in San Diego next month.
Winner get five grand.
We're already registered, yes! -Already registered? -Uh-huh.
-Really? -Yeah.
-Really? -Yeah.
