-Lifeguard! -Are you hurt? -My leg! I can't stand up! Reach over my neck.
-Hobie? Hobie! -I'm right here, dad.
-Are you all right? -I don't know, I can't move my legs.
I'm stuck.
It's gonna fall, hurry.
-Okay, okay.
Hold on.
Hang on.
Hang on, pal.
Take my hand, now slide out.
Easy.
Ow, my legs! It's gonna fall.
Oh, no! -You all right? It's okay, just hang on.
Hang on, pal.
A car is buried under a landslide, reports of a woman and children inside.
Give me that.
Here.
I called in.
Here, give me a shovel.
Come on! Faster.
I hear something.
Can't you go any faster? -I'm going as fast as I can.
-I've hit something.
Hold this.
-Got it.
-Hand me that crowbar.
-Help us! Please! -Get down, get your heads down.
You'll be all right.
Come on, we'll get you out.
I've got it.
Give me a hand.
Okay.
-Come on, it's okay.
Okay.
Come on, I've got you safe and sound.
Okay, your turn.
You all right? Come on.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Come on, come on.
I'm getting told in my ear, that you're looking, obviously, at a live picture.
This is the ten freeway, and this is at Fairfax, I believe.
I know that we had several collapses on the Santa Monica freeway.
One near Washington and one near Fairfax.
And the entire freeway is shutdown.
You can see from this that the freeway has buckled.
We have several injuries.
The freeway is going to be shutdown.
-Hello? Yeah, we're in here.
-Everybody okay? Yeah, we're all right.
-Any structural damage? -Well, we held up pretty well considering the rest of the city.
We've been getting phone calls from a lot of people, here at real news, as we continue to look at videotape being sent in from various different areas around Southern California.
-You heard from Stephanie? -I radioed for one of the units, nothing.
-Stay on that, will you? - All right.
- What's in our zone? -Deerfire and del Rey.
-We had landslide on pch, buried a car.
We were first on scene with four units.
I sent a scarab to the pier to back up.
-That's good work.
- Where's Hobie? - Ah, he's still on the beach, he won't go near anything that'll fall on him.
-Don't blame him.
-You don't know the half of it.
Newmie, he was almost killed.
This was way too close.
- Mitch! - Yeah, we're in here.
-I got a guy who's got a broken leg who needs first aid downstairs.
-I'll take care of it.
-Thanks, Newmie.
-You're all right? -Man, the beach just opened up and swallowed my truck.
I couldn't believe it.
-Believe it.
It was a seven point two.
-You think it was the big one? -Just hope it wasn't a foreshock.
Any power on it yet? -I'm almost online.
-All right, contact the pd.
Let them know we're available for emergency response.
And give me a damage assessment on the northern and Southern sections.
-Okay.
This is L.
A.
country lifeguard.
-Is everybody okay? -Caroline.
You guys all right? -Yeah, has anybody heard from Stephanie? -Not yet.
But that doesn't mean anything.
Hey C.
J.
! Stay here.
-You okay? It's all right, it's all right.
-Did you feel this one? -They felt this one in Las Vegas.
Looking at a live picture now of newscopter 13.
I can't tell you exactly where it is, but that's what Debra snell is onboard newscopter 13 for, and she can let us know what the situation is.
This is indeed balboa boulevard past mission.
-There's so much destruction.
It's like a nightmare.
-All right, now you listen to me.
The only way to the Marina is by the water.
I want you to get a couple of wave runners, and bring back two scarabs.
I'm gonna stay here and make sure the land-based operation gets up and running.
I'm going after Stephanie, all right? -Okay.
-Okay.
-Caroline, stay with Matt.
-No, I want to help Stephanie.
-No, no, no.
Matt, look after her.
-I got her.
-Whoa, hey! Whoa! Careful darlin'.
I do not want to survive my first shaker, and then be sent flying down the stairs by you.
-Sorry, I was in a hurry.
-I was wondering where you were.
But I can see why you would rather be here than getting your hands dirty saving lives.
Can't say I blame you.
-There's a lot of lives to save at this point, pal.
And this happens to be Stephanie's sister.
-Oh, beauty runs in the family.
I'm Logan.
-Caroline.
-Hey, Matt! I need you in here! -I'll be right back.
-He didn't want to let you go.
Are you his gf? -What? -His girlfriend? -No, i--Matt and I are just friends.
-I've only been here three days from tasmania.
Just trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together.
-I've got to get under this boat and get our life vests.
-Why doesn't anybody come? -They'll come, they know we're here.
Now hold on to him.
I'll be right back.
-I got it.
Hang in there, Tom.
Come on.
Grab a hold of the boat.
Here she comes.
-Put this on.
-Geez, we're all gonna die out here.
-Nobody's gonna die, Max.
-Riley's already dead.
-Hobie, I gotta go help Stephanie, and some people she's with.
Caroline will stay with you.
You'll be all right? -Yeah.
Dad, come back soon.
-Okay.
-Hi.
Debra snell reporting live from newscopter 13.
We have just flown over what could be a very dangerous situation.
As you can see, there's a car that is literally dangling over a cliff.
Now, the trailer, which it's attached to, is the only thing that is keeping it from actually careening onto the seafloor.
-Mitch, Jackie's trailer, it's hanging off a cliff above paradise cove.
There's no rescue underway.
-All right, ten-four, we're on it.
Matt, you and I will head up there.
C.
J.
C.
J.
, listen up.
Matt and I are heading to Jackie.
Newmie, go with them.
Newmie's gonna go with you.
You're gonna need him.
All right, head around the point.
Go, go! Go! Go! Good luck! We have not determined at this point in time if there's anyone in the car or in the trailer.
But if there is, I can only hope that help comes very soon.
-Another aftershock just moved the trailer farther on the edge.
-We have just seen the trailer move slightly which is not good news considering how close it is to actually falling off the cliff.
Now, this movement may be a signal to us that someone's actually trapped inside.
We don't know, quite frankly, how the rescue teams are gonna get through, because the highway is blocked at this point.
Preventing anyone from reaching this area.
We now have confirmation as to the owner of that car and that trailer that is really hanging precariously off that cliff.
It is Jackie Quinn, she is from Pittsburgh.
Oh hold on, wait a minute.
We now see a lifeguard boat coming this way.
The only thing I can guess is that maybe they're going to try to quite possibly scale the cliff.
I can tell you this much, that's gonna be extremely dangerous.
-Forget that, I got a better idea.
Hey! Come down! Down! -Oh, hold on, Ross.
Well it seems that one of the lifeguards is trying to get my attention.
Hold on a second.
But the lifeguards do have their climbing gear with them right now.
But it appears they're trying to signal us to fly lower.
You know, in a situation like this when every second counts, we really need to do what we can, so we're gonna go ahead and go down.
-Stop! -You got a harness? -Yeah.
-You think you can get me out over the car? -We could give it a try.
-His name is Matt, watch him.
He'll give you the signal.
-Okay.
Jackie! -Mitch! Jackie, it's Mitch! We're here! -It keeps slipping! The car has taken a spectacular plunge down the cliff, leaving the trailer above, but still in a precarious position hanging over the edge.
-Oh god! - Okay.
All right.
Jackie.
Jackie? Come to the door slowly.
-Don't look down, don't look down! Jackie? -Mitch! -Hang on.
- Mitch! - We'll get you out.
-Mitch! -Take it easy.
- I'm all right.
- One, two, three.
You're on! You're on, you're on.
I got you.
-Wait a minute, that guy.
-What guy? -A homeless guy I met yesterday.
He lives under the pier.
Jack! Jack, are you in there? -Okay, let's go.
-No, I can't go in there.
He lives right there.
I can't.
-Okay, wait here, all right? Wait there.
Hobie! Hobie, I need your help, now! -I'll go get somebody.
-No, we don't have any time! We need your help.
Get in there now! -It's heavy.
-I want you to push! All right, when the waves come, push! -All right.
Can't move it.
-Okay, this is it.
When this wave comes, push.
-All right.
Okay, push.
Push! -All right! All right, I got it off! .
-Come on, help me.
All right, on this wave.
Take him on the wave.
-What are you doing? -I'm gonna go down after Riley.
-He's over 100 feet down there.
You wouldn't have enough air to get back up.
You can't leave us alone here.
-Shut up, Max.
-Don't worry, help is on the way.
I'll be back soon.
-Where's Stephanie? -Down there.
Take care of these two guys, will you? - Okay.
-Newman, get me a tank.
-Stephanie, you're in no shape to go back down there.
-I'm fine.
Riley doesn't have much air left.
-Forget your gear, Logan, stay with them.
-No way, I'm a lifeguard not a babysitter.
-Lifeguards follow orders.
-You gotta retrieve that seismometer, it could've recorded some vital information.
-If we can, we will, but it's not a priority.
-You gotta make it a priority.
You don't understand-- -no, you don't understand.
We're trying to save Riley's life.
Logan, take care of Mr.
Edelman.
- Okay.
- Okay, let's go! -What's it worth to you? -What's what worth? -The seismometer or whatever is down there.
-Oh, it could contain some very valuable information.
-Then you'd be willing to pay quite a bit to recover it.
Hey, I'll be defying orders and may be risking my life.
I'm sure that's worth some sort of compensation.
And you'll guarantee not to disclose our dealings.
-That lifeguard that was up here, he went up after the seismometer, didn't he? -I tried to stop him, but he said if there was some information in it that could possibly save lives during a future earthquake, it was his obligation to get it.
-It was his obligation to follow orders.
-I was afraid you didn't make it back up.
-I had a great freediving coach.
-I hope you can recover what's in here.
I know how valuable it is.
-Thank you, I'm grateful.
-I need to have a talk with my exchange lifeguard if you don't mind.
Give me one reason why I shouldn't exchange you back to Australia? -You're right, I disregarded orders.
But if one life is saved by the information in that device, it was worth it.
I'll accept whatever punishment you think I deserve.
-Now that's a job you're suited for.
What is your problem, huh? -Lifeguards have to trust one another, and I don't trust you.
That's the bottom line.
And stay away from Caroline.
-What's the matter? Are you afraid of a little healthy competition? -Look, she was hurt once, and I don't want her hurt again.
Especially by someone like you.
-I am not interested in Caroline, and if I was it'd be none of your business.
No, I intend to find a rich, beautiful Malibu woman who'd take care of my every need.
After all, this is the land of opportunity.
-Yeah, well I wouldn't want you to miss the opportunity in cleaning the rest of those bathrooms.
-Okay, I want you to take this, and put it on your knee to keep the swelling down.
Everything's gonna be all right.
-Caroline, are you all right? -Oh, Stephanie.
Me? I was so worried about you.
Oh, how are you guys? I'm so glad you're okay.
-Is everything else okay? - Yeah.
- Patrick.
-Mitch! -Take her downstairs and make sure she's comfortable.
Yeah? -I just wanted to let you know how proud you would've been of Hobie.
He was incredible.
He went under the pier to help save a man's life.
He was so scared but he did it anyway.
-Caroline, I've been looking all over for him.
Where is he? -Hey, wow.
Best one you've ever done.
-Thanks.
-You know, Caroline told me about that guy under the pier.
And how you were scared to go back under there, took a lot of courage, buddy.
-I was scared the whole time.
I'll never go under there again.
-Ah, sure you will.
-No, all right.
No, I won't! I'm never going under there again, ever.
-Hobie, I know that's how you feel now, but in a couple of days-- -in a couple of days, what? I'm leaving, I'm out of here.
I'm gone.
History.
You have to come too, dad.
I mean, we can't live here anymore.
-Just pack up and leave? -Yes.
-Pack up and leave and start a new life some place else? -At least we'll have our lives, we won't be crushed by falling buildings.
Dad, I can't stop shaking.
-Hobie, you're still scared.
It's normal, pal.
I'm always gonna be scared as long as there's earthquakes.
-No you won't be, I'm telling ya.
It'll go away.
-But the earthquakes won't.
There's always gonna be earthquakes, you know they won't go away.
So you can't tell me there's nothing to be scared of.
-There's stuff to be scared of every minute, every day, anywhere we live.
But if we're prepared-- -prepared for what? How can you be prepared for an earthquake? It can happen at any time.
I mean, the news says there's gonna be 5,000 aftershocks.
This wasn't even the big one.
-I know, Hobie, I know.
I understand how you feel.
A lot of people are feeling the same thing.
-Yeah, but they weren't almost killed, were they? Dammit.
-It's okay.
It's okay.
-How can you keep saying that? -I promise, look at me.
I won't let anything happen to you, okay? I won't! -Do you really mean that? -Of course I mean it.
-Then let me go live with mom.
