Criminal Minds s14e04 Episode Script

Innocence

Prentiss: Previously on "Criminal Minds" Spencer, just shoot her! Shoot her! You need to let us go right now! Get me out of here! Hey, I meant it when I said you should take some time off.
You've just been through a lot.
Garcia: I am here before you today hoping that you will forgive the man who killed my parents and grant him parole.
Carlos, talk to me.
Talk to you? I can't even look at you.
[Insects chirping.]
[Rustling.]
[Sobbing.]
Where are we going? Why are you doing this? I just want to go home.
Take me back home.
I won't tell anybody.
You won't get in trouble, I promise.
It's not too late.
We can go back.
Please, let's go back.
[Muffled.]
Please let me go! [Muffled scream.]
Oh, no.
Your poor mug.
Ah, you really like this one.
But, you know, it's not that bad.
I bet it could be glued.
No.
It wouldn't look the same.
I'm sorry, Penelope.
Why are you sorry? It's just a dumb mug.
It's fine.
I'm fine.
- Are you sure? - Yeah.
Absolutely.
Uh I did some work on the Florida case, some cyber-sleuthing, some really interesting things.
I put it on your tablet.
Yes, I got it, and I have reviewed it.
Great.
I will round up the troops.
This can wait.
Everything can everything can wait.
No, no, wait.
Slow down, ok? Just take a minute and deal with this.
- But - No, no buts.
I'll brief the team, and I'll fill you in if there's anything you miss before we fly.
[Sighs.]
Our victim is Melissa Wallace, 39, a wife and mother who lived in Tallahassee, Florida.
Local law enforcement referred the case to us due to the ritualistic nature of the kill.
Her body was discovered in a wooded area not far from where she lived.
She was found barefoot, wearing a nightshirt and bound to a tree.
'Cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
No signs of sexual assault.
And the back door was wide open, otherwise there were no signs of forced entry.
Looks like she was lured or abducted from her home.
The kids, aged 10 and 13, they were both asleep in the house.
Neither one woke up.
Well, threatening to hurt them could be how the unsub got her out of the house.
Why leave the house with her when he could have just bludgeoned her to death in bed? Maybe he didn't want one of the kids to find her body.
Is Tallahassee sure they need our help? I mean, everything about this says that the husband is their prime suspect.
Except the husband, Danny Wallace, has an alibi.
He was in Tampa on business.
That's about a 4-hour drive from Tallahassee.
We're sure it checks out? Yeah, Garcia confirmed everything with Danny's employer.
She also pulled time-stamped CCTV footage of him on the I-10 heading back to Tallahassee from Tampa.
It cover the time-of-death window.
Plus, Garcia accessed Danny's phone and financial records.
Nothing indicates he hired someone to kill his wife.
Well, Garcia's nothing if not thorough.
That essentially rules out our prime suspect.
Well, looks like Tallahassee does need our help.
The Wallace family moved to Florida roughly 4 months ago.
Before that, they lived in Arlington, Virginia.
Do they still have roots up here in our backyard? Lots.
That's why you and I are gonna stay back while the rest of the team heads down to Tallahassee.
Wheels up in 20.
[Gun cocks.]
Prentiss: "We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion.
The great task in life is to find reality.
" Iris Murdoch.
So victimology's tricky.
On the surface, Melissa led a low-risk lifestyle.
Oh, yeah, she was the poster child for clean living.
She met her husband Danny Wallace in Bible study when she was a freshman in college.
They got married in 2005, two kids, boy and a girl, 13 and 10.
Nothing out of the ordinary except that she started homeschooling both kids when they moved to Florida.
Well, that's consistent with the role of faith in her life.
77% of parents who homeschool do so out of a desire to offer greater religious or moral instruction to their children.
Rossi: Before the move, she worked part time as a paralegal.
Homeschooling two kids is a full-time job.
Yeah, that could have been isolating for her.
It takes time to build up a support system in a new town.
Especially since Danny's job takes him on the road a lot.
Garcia: Her social media footprints revolves around the planets of family, homeschooling, homeschooling activities, and her Evangelical church.
The way Melissa was killed, it was very personal.
Someone wanted to punish or shame her.
Well, there's got to be more to her story than this squeaky-clean facade.
I mean, if this was all there is, she wouldn't have ended up tied to a tree with her head bashed in.
We're gonna need to take a look behind the facade.
Luke, JJ, Matt, go to the crime scene and the family home.
Tara and Spence, see what turns up at the church.
Dave and I are gonna dig through the life she left behind in Arlington.
We get our fair share of homicides here, but something like this, something that requires profiling, not so much, you know.
Yeah, we understand.
I pretty much grew up watching all the "CSIs," so, uh, yeah, definitely influenced my choice of specialty.
We appreciate that, Dr.
Choudhury.
So what can you tell us? Time of death was about or between 1:00 and 4:00 am.
The soles of her feet are dirty with several abrasions.
So the unsub walked her out here from the house.
Alvez: Yeah, it's only a quarter of a mile, but still, he had to risk being seen in public.
Yeah, he'd need to control her with something.
A gun would be most efficient.
Interesting he didn't use a gun to shoot her.
I mean, cause of death was clearly blunt force trauma to the head.
I mean, as far as I can tell, he didn't use any of the rocks, either.
What rocks? These.
I'll show you.
Choudhury: I just figured it was the killer who left them there.
Definitely looks like it.
JJ: These rocks, the victim bound to a tree, blunt force trauma to the head.
I mean, this looks like a scene from kind of ritual.
But you said she wasn't killed with a rock.
At least not one of these.
These are limestone, which is a relatively soft stone.
Crumbles pretty easily, would have left residue at the point of impact, but there's nothing on the victim.
Any idea what it was? The material used to bludgeon her was definitely much harder.
My best guess is metal, maybe the butt or barrel of a gun.
Let's get these to M-Vac for testing, see if we get some DNA off of them.
We get lucky, we might get a CODIS hit.
Thanks.
When Lizzie called, I was still sound asleep.
She had to call 3 times before I woke up.
It was late, and I'm sure you were tired.
Every parent can relate to that.
You got kids? Yeah.
I do.
Did Lizzie see or hear anything unusual? Only that the back door was open.
Melissa was gone when she woke up.
Melissa would never ever leave the kids home alone like that.
I knew right away it was bad.
And Lizzie didn't wake her brother up? Not until after she called me.
Jacob, he He sleeps like a log.
And does your daughter wake up like that in the middle of the night a lot? Only when I'm on the road.
She goes to sleep in her bedroom but climbs into bed with Melissa in the middle of the night.
Danny, do you have any firearms in the house? - Guns? - Mm-hmm.
No, no, I've never been a hunter.
[Exhales.]
I didn't even get to say good-bye.
I tried to call earlier in the day and she didn't answer.
Was that unusual for her not to answer her phone? A little.
She does these lunches once a week at our church with some other moms who homeschool.
They're real informal.
Usually she picks up even when she's there, but yesterday she didn't.
[Door opens, closes.]
Woman: Danny? Excuse me.
I can't believe my baby sister's really dead.
I'm so sorry.
I don't know what we're gonna do.
Aunt Laura, mom's dead.
She's dead! I know.
I know, baby.
I'm so sorry.
Jacob, honey.
I'm so sorry.
[Lizzie sobbing.]
Lewis: So, Pastor Hollis, when did you last see Melissa? Melissa stopped coming about a month back.
Reid: Are you sure about that? Her husband said that she was here yesterday.
Hollis: I'm sure.
I keep a close eye on my flock.
She also stopped coming to Bible study and to Sunday service.
Lately it was only Danny and the kids.
- Do you know why? - Why do any of us stray? Because the devil paves our way with temptations.
I meant to check in with Melissa, but I didn't get to it.
That was my lapse.
Melissa lied to her husband about where she was yesterday.
Any idea why? No.
She had two beautiful children, and Danny's a good provider, God fearing.
They seemed happy.
You didn't think it was odd that she stopped coming? It's the nature of sinners to stray.
I only hoped that she might stand as a warning to others.
You think that what happened to Melissa is some kind of punishment from God? Not punishment, no.
But she gave up the lord's protection when she left his flock.
Prentiss: Brian, you worked with Melissa in Arlington? I'm the one who hired her.
She reported directly to me at the firm.
[Sighs.]
Just can't believe she's dead.
The poor kids.
And Danny.
How are they doing? I'm sure they're devastated.
It's just so horrible.
You were close.
We were friends.
Good friends.
Brian, your relationship with Melissa, it was more than just professional, wasn't it? [Sighs.]
Yes.
But it's not what you think.
We weren't having an affair.
We were, uh I don't know, kindred spirits, you might say.
At least she helped me when I was going through something really difficult.
What was that? The truth about myself.
I'm married, and my wife, she's a great person, but I'm gay.
It's because of Melissa I'm able to admit that to myself and others.
She understood my struggle.
I only wish I'd been able to help her.
Help her with what? Whatever it was that was making her so sad.
Was there trouble in her marriage? Honestly, I don't know.
She was very private.
And there was a sadness about her.
[Sobbing.]
Hey.
You ok? Yeah, totally.
Fine.
Thank you.
Sure.
Hey, talk to me.
What's wrong? It's nothing.
I'm ok.
Really, I'm fine.
Thanks for the coffee.
[Sniffles.]
[Typing.]
Prentiss: Do you have any idea what that was about? I wish I did.
Believe me, I tried to get her to open up.
And I think she wanted to confide in me.
She felt very alone, that much I do know.
Officer: We found this in the woods about a mile from where we found Melissa Wallace.
That nightshirt was hers.
Simmons: Well, this is definitely the work of our unsub.
Now, he could have taken this the night he killed Melissa.
Whatever release he was expecting to get from killing her wasn't enough, so he did it again, symbolically.
The weapon was clearly a shotgun, but there weren't any spent shells in the area.
And we searched the Wallace home and didn't find any firearms on the premise.
Well, Danny said they didn't have any guns in the house, so that's consistent.
He also said that they were happy, but we know that Melissa was lying to him.
Wouldn't be the first wife to do that.
The question is why.
She stopped going to church, she stopped socializing with the friends she made there.
She was hiding something.
An affair? Prentiss: She wasn't physically cheating on him while they lived in Arlington, but her relationship with Brian sounds a lot like an emotional affair.
Well, either way, Danny could have been suspicious.
Brian thought she was sad and lonely.
And if Melissa was lonely in Arlington She would have been lonely in Tallahassee, too.
She was even more isolated down here.
Church was pretty much the extent of her social life.
It's possible she met someone and started having an actual affair.
So if Melissa really was cheating on Danny, it's most likely with someone she met from the church.
All right, we'll talk soon.
Bye.
I know Danny has an alibi, but that doesn't mean he didn't play a role in his wife's murder.
Especially since Melissa was lying to him.
According to Emily and Dave, something was troubling Melissa back in Arlington.
Whatever it was, it seems to have followed her here to Florida.
Well, we need to figure out what she was hiding.
Hey, Garcia, what can you tell me about the church of the Holy Redemption? The pastor of the congregation encourages its members to call out sinners and shun them.
Whatever happened to love thy neighbor? Not if you're a sinner, not if you're Pastor Hollis.
And he doesn't stop with the shunning.
I'm afraid to ask, but what does that mean? That means a few weeks ago, Pastor Hollis preached about Deuteronomy, those verses about how adulterers should be put to death.
Hmm.
Well, Melissa had stopped going to church, but Danny was still attending services, so what if he took Pastor Hollis' sermon literally? [Woman sobbing.]
Please! No.
[Muffled screams.]
Pyramid of rocks, just like at the first scene.
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
" Could be a sign.
Maybe the unsub believes he is without sin or that he felt his victims had transgressed in some way.
Whatever the message, it's definitely our unsub.
So if Danny did kill Melissa, why would he target his wife's sister? You know, Emily and Dave called the family back in Arlington today.
They all say that Laura and Melissa were best friends, confidants.
They weren't able to talk to Laura 'cause she was already on her way out here.
We were supposed to sit down with her today.
And now we're too late.
Matt was at the house when Laura arrived, and he said that Laura gave Danny the cold shoulder.
She comforted the children, but rejected Danny when he tried to hug her.
She probably suspected that he killed her sister.
If it was more than a suspicion, that would have been a powerful motive for him to get rid of her.
And he doesn't have an airtight alibi for this murder.
We need to talk to him.
Simmons: Ok.
Yeah.
Thanks, Garcia.
[Phone beeps.]
So the car parked out front is the one that Laura rented from the airport.
I pulled the GPS, and before coming out here, the only place she drove yesterday was the church of the Holy Redemption.
She was probably just making funeral arrangements.
Well, maybe, but she went with Danny earlier in the day to do that.
She drove back later without him.
They were here to select verses and hymns.
Yeah, that was the first visit, but we know Laura came back alone later in the day.
Reid: She wanted to talk to you about Melissa, didn't she? Laura wanted to pray with me.
I think she wanted answers, answers that only you could provide.
Reid: It's the nature of sinners to stray, right? And that included Melissa, didn't it? Of course it did.
Nobody's above the battle.
Were you having an affair with her? No.
I think you were.
And I think that that sermon from a few weeks ago about adultery was actually about your own guilt over your affair with Melissa.
That's ridiculous.
Lewis: Laura knew about that affair.
That's why she was here yesterday.
She confronted you, didn't she? No.
You don't know what you're talking about.
Did she threaten to expose your hypocrisy to the church, to your wife? Is that why you killed her? I didn't kill her.
Where were you last night? At home.
Where was your wife? She was at an all-night prayer vigil.
I was alone.
Pastor Hollis is lying.
So then we have two viable suspects, the pastor and her husband.
But not enough evidence to arrest either one of them.
Well, there's a good case for both of them as our unsub.
Well, Danny's been suspicious of Melissa's fidelity since back before they moved to Florida.
Well, he may have believed that moving them away from Arlington, away from whatever was going on between Melissa and her boss would wipe the slate clean.
Lewis: But it didn't, and they got down here and the same thing started happening.
She was distant.
She was lying to him again.
And the church with all the fire and brimstone sermons only fueled his anger, made violence seem like a righteous answer to his problem.
And our only problem is his alibi.
Ok, well, Pastor Hollis doesn't have an alibi for either murder.
And if he was having an affair with Melissa, he'd also have motive.
Well, he's the leader of his church and his community.
If Melissa would have gone public with their affair, that would have threatened his whole world.
What we need now is something to tip the scales in the favor of one of our suspects.
Dave.
Medical records, more specifically, emergency room records going back 4 years for Melissa, Jacob, and Lizzie.
Everyone accept Danny.
Melissa turned up with a bruised rib and a broken wrist, Jacob broke his arm, and Lizzie was treated for burns on her arm and a broken foot.
Individually they seem innocuous enough.
No two injuries ever happened at the same time, and they were all treated at different hospitals.
We were operating on the assumption that Melissa started homeschooling her children because of religious reasons, but what if wasn't about that at all? You think she was worried that the injuries might raise suspicions at school? It's possible.
You think Danny did this? It's hard not to.
This might be what she was hiding from Brian, from everyone.
Except his alibi is rock solid.
Well, I'm tired of slamming into that rock.
Let's go talk to Garcia.
Garcia: Oh, no, no, no, no.
I can't believe I missed this.
Penelope, what is it? I screwed up.
What do you mean? The CCTV footage, it's wrong.
I wasn't wrong, but the time is off by an hour.
Prentiss: Are you sure? I'm positive.
It's because of daylight savings time.
The Florida highway patrol doesn't reset the clocks on their cameras to account for daylight savings, and that means You didn't screw up.
And Danny's back in the hot seat.
You got to let me call my brother.
I don't want the kids to be alone.
Simmons: The kids are fine.
There's a female CPS worker at the house.
That's not enough.
I need to call my brother.
I want them with family.
Please.
You said you have kids.
I need to do this for them.
Ok.
We'll let you make a quick call.
That was smart of Simmons.
He's building trust.
I got a Pastor Hollis here.
Won't talk to anybody but you two.
Reid: Chief Burrows said you wanted to talk to us.
I do.
I know how it looks, and I want to tell you the truth.
That's what we want as well.
Melissa came to me privately for ministry and counseling, but she had so much shame she couldn't bring herself to tell me what was burdening her.
I'm a sinner, Pastor Hollis, and I'm being punished for my sins.
What's troubling you? I can't talk about it, Pastor.
Please pray with me.
I know I'm wretched.
I know I'm a sinner, but I can't continue like this.
I need the mercy of Jesus in my life.
Please help me.
I don't want you to suffer.
[Sobbing.]
See, I want to help you, Melissa.
[Sobs.]
Please.
[Gasps.]
What are you doing? All right, let me get this straight.
Melissa rebuffed your advances? I took advantage of Melissa's trust.
I was weak.
But she didn't want to betray her husband, her vows.
Did she threaten to tell Danny or your wife? Was she gonna expose you? No, she didn't.
But after that, she stopped coming to church.
She came to me for spiritual help.
And instead, you took advantage of her.
I wanted to save her, I wanted to comfort her, and I slipped.
I drove her away.
I can't prove to you that I didn't kill her, but I didn't.
Are you gonna arrest me? You are a hypocrite, but we believe you.
You're free to go, Pastor.
My brother's an hour outside Tallahassee.
He's heading to the house now.
You feel better now? Yeah.
You know, all this concern for your family, it's touching, Danny, but where was this concern when you were sending your wife and kids to the E.
R.
? What are you talking about? Bruised ribs, broken wrist, broken arm, broken foot, and burns.
Alvez: That's one hell of a temper, Danny.
Does that make you feel powerful, beating up your wife and kids? I never Those were accidents.
He seems surprised by the accusation, but that hesitation He's lying.
Alvez: Was it an accident when you murdered your wife? What? You accused her of having an affair, didn't you? Back in Arlington.
What are you talking about? But she was always putting up walls, wasn't she? - Never letting you in.
- No, we loved each other.
You made her quit her job, you moved her away from her family, her sister who's her best friend.
Did you think it'd be easier to control her if you isolated her from her entire support system? We moved because I got a new job.
It was a promotion.
It was more money.
She didn't have to work.
It's what we both wanted.
Alvez: But the change of scenery didn't change anything.
Same show, different channel.
Didn't you wonder why she stopped going to church? Pastor Hollis, he paid special attention to her, didn't he? She loved me.
Melissa loved me.
Nothing meant more to her than her family.
Who told you these lies? He didn't know.
Well, maybe he's just reacting to hearing the accusations out loud for the first time.
I don't think so.
If he didn't suspect her of cheating, he had no motive to murder his wife.
Simmons and Alvez are gonna have to push him.
Laura knew everything.
Yesterday she went to your church to talk to your pastor because she thought that he killed Melissa, just like it commands in Deuteronomy.
That was before she realized you knew that Melissa cheated on you, before she realized you're the one who killed her sister.
[Sighs.]
Ok.
Ok, what? I'm ready to talk.
I'll tell you whatever it is you want to hear.
What do you think we want to hear, Danny? The truth.
I did it.
I killed them both.
I'll write a confession.
I'll sign whatever you want me to sign.
You can take my fingerprints, my DNA.
Anything you need.
Reid: He's lying.
Usually when abusers lie, it's to deny the abuse, but he's lying about murdering his wife.
He's protecting someone.
We need to figure out who.
[Typing.]
Hey.
Hey.
[Sniffles.]
Are you ok? I don't think so.
Ohh It wasn't your fault.
You didn't screw up.
We had no reason to doubt the time stamp on that footage.
I should have Double, triple, quadruple checked the metadata, and if I had, maybe Laura Nygard would be alive right now.
You are not responsible for the unsub's behavior.
I'm responsible for my behavior.
And don't tell me that this has to do with my abduction, because I already know that.
Penelope, listen to me.
What happened to you was awful, traumatic, and yes, it impacted you, but the way you're feeling, it's about a lot of stuff.
Like what? Everything.
A lifetime of accumulated trauma, your brother Carlos, the drunk driver who killed your parents.
No, no, no.
That accident was a long time ago, and I have forgiven the man who killed them, and I've gotten over my anger.
And I'm glad you did, but it didn't fix everything.
It didn't make the pain go away.
It cost me my brother.
I forgave the man who killed our parents, and he can't forgive me because I betrayed him.
Oh, Penelope, no, you didn't.
You did the right thing.
Carlos will come around.
He won't.
He really won't.
He doesn't want anything to do with me.
Ohh.
Danny is sticking with his story.
He signed a confession.
Still says he killed Melissa when he found out she was cheating on him and killed Laura because she figured out what he'd done.
He just pulled a complete 180.
That doesn't make any sense.
And we can't ask him anymore questions because he lawyered up.
It's the M-Vac report.
They were able to get DNA off the limestone rocks.
There wasn't a match in CODIS, and they tested it against the sample from Danny Wallace.
Let me guess, - not a match? - No, it's not.
Danny's not our unsub.
All right, let's go back over what we already know.
Well, one thing's for certain Melissa Wallace had a secret, a secret that weighed very heavily on her.
Whatever that secret was it put a strain on her marriage.
Danny believed that moving cross country would give them a new beginning, so they pulled up stakes and moved to Florida.
Even with a change of scenery, Melissa was still troubled.
She was no longer working outside of the home, but she was homeschooling both of their children.
That's sort of strange, isn't it? What, the homeschooling? Yeah.
Normally when people move to a new town, they want to make ties in the community.
Sending their kids to school would have allowed them to do that, but instead they chose to homeschool.
So maybe their school back in Arlington has some answers.
[Bell rings.]
Penelope's really hurting.
Poor kid.
I'm surprised her brother hasn't reached out to her.
I know, but he hasn't.
Carlos has no idea what she's been through the past few months.
No wonder she's feeling isolated.
You wanted to know about the Wallace kids? Yes.
They went to school here.
Do you remember them? Absolutely.
Jacob and Lizzie.
I can't say I was upset to see them go.
Why's that? The family had issues.
I know that sounds terrible, but it's true.
Actually, it wasn't the whole family.
Lizzie was a sweetheart.
And the parents were lovely, but Jacob, he was a handful.
He had behavioral issues? That's putting it mildly.
Usually boys start settling down around third grade, even the spirited ones.
But Jacob didn't? Just the opposite.
He became more and more unruly, to the point that he was injuring other students.
His impulse control was non-existent, and he was extremely disruptive.
I encouraged Melissa and Danny to have him evaluated, but they resisted.
Some parents worry their children will be stigmatized by a diagnosis.
That might have been a rational fear in Jacob's case.
If he'd stayed, I was prepared to require him to have a shadow for the protection of the other students.
I was relieved when Melissa said they were moving out of state.
Woman: Ma'am.
If you'll excuse me, I have a minor brushfire I need to put out.
- Jacob.
- Mm-hmm.
That was Melissa's secret, Danny's, too.
And it explains her shame, the guilt.
Even if it was irrational, she felt like God was punishing her by giving her a son she couldn't control.
Even if he was violent with other kids at school, even with impulse control issues, why would Jacob kill his own mother? [Cell phone rings.]
Hey, Penelope.
What do you got? Garcia, on phone: I have the DNA results from the rock at the crime scene, and I pulled it through some other databases, and I got a hit.
- Alvez: You got a name? - Not yet, 'cause it's not a law enforcement database.
What is it? It's one of those recreational genetic sites.
It's called My DNA Map.
So our unsub spit into a tube and sent away for a profile? Garcia: Yeah.
I'm in.
You got a name? Oh, my God, it's their son, Jacob Wallace.
That can't be right.
Jacob's only 13.
Why would Jacob be looking for DNA relatives? Garcia: Oh, looks like he was trying to make a family tree to give to his parents.
He tried to connect with DNA matches, no Wallace cousins on his father's side.
Oh, Jacob Wallace isn't Danny's biological son.
That explains why the DNA on the rocks didn't match Danny's.
That'd be one hell of a trigger.
There's another DNA sample in Jacob's account.
It's Lizzie Wallace.
His sister? His half-sister.
Simmons: Wait, is Danny her biological father? Yeah, he is.
Jacob must have sent in another sample for Lizzie to see if she was the biological child of both of his parents.
Well, the results are live, so he knows she is.
DNA results mean that Lizzie is his next target.
[Cell phone chimes.]
When's Dad coming home? He said he'd be back before we went to sleep last night.
Let's go for a walk.
It'll take your mind off things.
I don't want to.
I want to wait for Dad.
Come on! [Jacob grunts.]
Open the door, Lizzie! Open it! Woman: What are you doing? Where's your sister? [Rifle cocks.]
Woman: What are you doing? No! Please! [Gunshot.]
[Grunts.]
Let's go! Simmons: Clear! JJ: Clear.
Too late.
[Sighs.]
All right, where would he take Lizzie? He's on foot.
He's decompensating.
We're close by the spot where he killed his mom.
Back door's open.
JJ: Jacob.
Stay back.
- I'll shoot her.
- Ok.
Ok.
Hey, I don't want to hurt you.
I just want to talk.
You just want me to put the gun down.
I do.
I do want that.
I don't want anyone else to get hurt.
Jacob, I know about the My DNA Map test.
I know what you found out.
- Jacob: My mom lied.
- I know.
She's a liar and a sinner, and she made me a bastard.
I know how angry that must have made you.
She was an adulterer.
At church they told us adultery was punishable by death.
It says so in the Bible.
I understand how angry you are, and you know what, it was not fair of her to lie to you.
She lied to my dad, too.
She tricked him.
My aunt Laura helped her trick him.
- Your mom told you that? - Yeah.
After I got the My DNA Map results.
She said sorry, but that is not enough.
It's not enough.
She took my dad away from me.
Jacob, your dad loves you.
He's not my dad! A family is so much more than blood, Jacob.
It's so much more than DNA.
You know, he loves you so much that he confessed to both murders to protect you.
That's only because he thinks that he's my dad.
No, Jacob, no.
He he knows the truth.
He's always known.
And it didn't matter to him, it didn't.
Because, Jacob, he loves you.
[Grunts.]
[Handcuffs click.]
Ok.
You ok? Yeah.
[Sobs.]
[Sighs.]
[Elevator dings.]
Are you sure she wants to see me? Oh, yeah, I'm sure.
[Knock on door.]
Enter at your own risk.
My unicorn mug.
I threw that away.
I know.
I rescued it.
I hope you don't mind.
No, I don't mind at all.
Oh, good, 'cause I couldn't help it.
I wanted to put it back together for you.
And when I was fixing it, I realized something.
You are not the mug.
You're the glue that holds the mug together.
Come on.
Thank you for listening to me and for understanding me and for being my most special friend and my boss at the same time.
Ok.
Well, I hope you still feel that way when I tell you there's someone here who wants to talk to you.
Dave and I asked him to come.
Carlos.
Hey, sis.
Did David Rossi make you come here under threat of bodily harm? No, I'm here 'cause I want to be.
Prentiss: I'm gonna leave you two alone.
- I wanted to - You look good.
Look, I know you're mad at me about what happened at the parole hearing, and I don't know how to make you not be mad at me.
Look, do I understand how you could forgive the man who murdered our parents? No.
I don't.
I might never understand.
But I know you, and I know it came from a good place.
Thank you.
Emily and Dave, they told me what happened to you.
- It was bad.
- I know.
I thought I was going to die.
I'm so sorry.
It's part of the job.
It's ok.
No, it's not ok, 'cause I'm your brother.
I'm supposed to know when you're in trouble.
Hey.
