FBI: Most Wanted (2020) s02e01 Episode Script

Rampage

1 Thought he said he'd be here by 9:00.
- He did.
- It's almost 10:00.
It's called Byron time.
- Dad, what's wrong? - Nothing.
I just don't want you to be disappointed if Grandpa doesn't make it today.
He has a habit of forgetting his obligations.
Well, he remembers my birthday every single year.
And he doesn't just buy some stupid card and stick it in the mail.
He always writes his own message.
That's because he feels guilty he hasn't seen you in four years.
Marilou, you don't have to go to all this trouble.
It's no trouble, it's family.
So what's the occasion for the visit? I don't know, he's lonely, I guess.
He's been in lockdown in New Orleans for the last six months.
He's got cabin fever like the rest of us.
[CAR HORN HONKING.]
There he is! Tali, put your mask on.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Grandpa! Hey, there she is! Well hell, you turned into a regular teenage monster! Almost.
Hey, Grandpa.
Everyone, this is Marie.
That's my son Jess, and that's Nelson, - and Mary Lee.
- Marilou.
- Oh.
- Right sorry.
- Nice to meet you, Marie.
- Thanks for having us.
Byron's told me all about you, Tali.
And you too.
He is so proud to have an FBI agent in the family.
I can't wait to settle in and hear some of your stories.
That's a lot of stuff for just the weekend.
Well, it's a long drive.
I thought we'd stay a while, get to know each other.
- Did you bring masks? - Don't need them.
We were tested last week.
We're both negative.
Dad, that's not how it works.
Yeah, I thought you might want some forensic evidence, so here you go.
[LAUGHS.]
- Good to see you, son.
- Oh, don't mind if I do.
- Come on, we made breakfast.
- Let's have some breakfast.
- I made it purple.
- Oh, that sounds amazing.
I'm ready.
Did you make it? - Uh, yes, I did.
- Oh, my goodness.
- Now I'm really excited.
- [LAUGHS.]
Thank you.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
Yeah, it's pretty busy here today.
Just find a place to park.
I'll try to get as close to the front as I can.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
This okay? Just watch and enjoy.
[GUNSHOTS RINGING.]
[CROWD SCREAMING.]
- Get down! - Down, down! Stay down! [CROWD SCREAMING.]
Let's go, let's go! No! [TIRES SCREECH.]
[WOMAN SOBBING.]
Terry! Terry! That's the house roast from Cafe Du Monde.
Best coffee in New Orleans.
It's even better than the café Au lait in Paris.
- Wait, you've been to Paris? - Mais oui.
We should go together, when things get back to normal.
You didn't tell me you were plus one.
Well, Marie and I have been together two years now.
- I forget not everyone knows.
- She's half your age.
Really? I had not noticed.
[CHUCKLES.]
Hey, wait you're making us sleep in the barn? I thought it was just you.
There's a pull-out couch and a full bath.
You're just gonna have to make do.
Hey, they got a pull-out couch for us, Marie! Not a problem.
I can sleep anywhere.
[CHUCKLES.]
She's a trooper, right? Unlike your mother.
- How is she, by the way? - She's fine.
Arizona got hit pretty hard but she's staying safe.
Yeah, well, tell her I said hello.
Maybe leave out the Marie part.
[CELL PHONE RINGING, BUZZING.]
- Hey, Clinton.
- We need you here.
All right.
On my way.
I gotta go.
- Oh.
- Well, wait, we just got here.
Ah, this happens all the time, Grandpa.
Don't take it personally.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Come on, I'll show you around.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
Breathe easy now.
You can do this.
Let these rich bastards feel some real pain for once in their lives.
[MEN SHOUTING, GROANING.]
[WOMAN SCREAMS.]
Fugitive's name is Kyle Dennison, 17 years old.
Witnesses reported a slow-moving green van at both locations before the shooting started.
We've got 6 dead, 14 wounded.
Kid's barely old enough to shave.
How'd we get the ID? Local PD found shell casings from an AR-15.
He left spent ammo behind? It's a rookie mistake.
If his prints were in the database, he must have priors.
Yeah, one sec.
Yup.
One juvie arrest for petty larceny two years ago.
Now he's being tagged as a domestic terrorist by the director.
Needless to say, I think everyone in Wilkes-Barre is freaking out.
Just got this in.
It's a cell phone video from the shopping mall.
[GUNSHOTS RINGING.]
[PEOPLE SCREAMING, SHOUTING.]
Two sniper attacks in the space of an hour.
Both locations he hit are upscale.
Soft targets, easy access, with no street video.
- Agreed.
- Except for the sniper part.
Agreed again.
Look at all these missed shots.
Looks like he was firing wildly, causing mayhem with no intended target.
Still, some thought went into this.
He's either familiar with these places or he scouted them in advance.
What do we know on background? He was placed in a group foster home after his father died of COVID in March.
His mother Lisa was killed in a car accident when he was 15.
Loses his mom, then orphaned by COVID in the space of two years.
That had to be rough.
It's not that easy to drive, shoot an AR-15, and actually hit two dozen people.
There's probably an accomplice.
Could be a Columbine-type dynamic: A sociopathic narcissist mixed with somebody who has low self-esteem.
Crosby's dating life exactly.
It's a lethal combination, a dynamic that gets a rush out of killing, which means more bodies.
You guys start with the victims and the murder weapon.
Barnes, you and I go check out Kyle's foster home.
Kyle landed here in March after his father died.
He has no other family? An aunt in Idaho who didn't want him.
It's nearly impossible to place a 17 year old with a foster family.
We were just trying to keep Kyle safe and get him through his virtual classes for senior year.
Kids must be climbing the walls these days.
Yeah, it was hard enough before COVID.
Now, it's a daily battle just to keep them from killing each other.
When was the last time you saw Kyle? July.
He had some problems here.
The new kid always has to prove himself to his peers.
We know there was some bullying, and it finally got to him.
He took off with another one of the residents.
- Who's that? - Kid named Billy Ray Jackson.
Kinda surprised me they ran off together.
Billy Ray was a handful from the day he got here three years ago.
Cocky, stubborn.
Sounds like Billy Ray was the alpha male in that duo.
Definitely a bad influence.
So no contact from either one since July? Billy Ray called us the day after they left to say that he and Kyle were visiting his grandmother in Philly.
We checked it out.
No grandma, fake address.
We classified them as absconded, filed missing persons reports.
Thanks, Mr.
Nash.
We appreciate your service here.
Get Clinton and the cool kids on Billy Ray.
I'm gonna find out Kyle's last known.
FBI's looking for runaways now? We think your son might have information on the shootings in Wilkes-Barre.
You think Billy Ray did them? Hmm.
How do you like that? Boy always did light up when there was a gun in the house.
Ms.
Jackson, we need to find him.
Hopefully he doesn't have anything to do with this.
Well, I don't know where he's at.
I've been locked up for seven years.
Me and him ain't exactly Facebook friends.
What about his father? [CHUCKLES.]
Chuckie? That's a good question.
Yeah, I lost touch with that scumbag after I shot him six times, and then they checked me into this fine establishment.
I learned my lesson, boys.
Stay away from the good-looking, smooth-talking ones.
They get you into bed one night, and stab you in the back before breakfast.
Let the warden know if you have any idea where your son is.
Let's go.
I didn't know the original owners.
When I bought the place, all the Realtor told me was that they lived here for ten years till one of them got sick, and then moved out.
Did they leave any of their personal belongings behind? No, place was vacant when I moved in.
One strange thing, though.
For the first few months I'm here, this teenager used to come by and sit on the curb across the street.
Stare at the house, like he was waiting for somebody.
Him? Yeah, that's him, all right.
[CELL PHONE CHIMES.]
- Thank you.
- Thanks.
- What's wrong? - Nothing.
My dad's visiting with his girlfriend who's half his age.
- Something wrong with that? - [LAUGHING.]
No.
He just wants to take everybody out for a fancy dinner tonight, and somehow I know it's gonna end up on my credit card.
You haven't talked about him much lately.
It's complicated.
Sounds like him visiting might be an olive branch.
Usually means he wants something.
- Hey, Barnes.
- Yeah? K.
D.
plus L.
C.
- Kyle Dennison's girlfriend? - Maybe.
Whoever it is, it could be who he's holed up with right now.
Hana just got a location hit on Billy Ray's cell.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
- [MAN SHOUTING IN VIDEO GAME.]
- Direct hit.
[KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
FBI, open up! Hey! Hey! Hey, stop right there! - [SCREAMS.]
- Hey, get back here! Freeze! I said freeze! Stop right there! [GRUNTING.]
- Hold it right there! - Stop! Put your hands up.
Hey, whoa, whoa.
I give, I give.
Where's Kyle? Who's Kyle? - Where's Kyle? - Swear to God.
I haven't seen him in, like, months.
Where were you this morning? The public library in Scranton.
Researching your PhD dissertation? They have computers and the Internet is free, so There was, like, 20 people there and security cameras, so you can't steal nothing.
I'll check it out.
I like a good movie.
Don't smile.
It's not a selfie.
When was the last time you heard from Kyle? When we bounced.
We went to Duke's Thrift Shop on River Road where he and his mom used to shop.
And then we split up.
He tell you where he was going? Not to me.
Then again, we were baked out of our brains.
- [LAUGHS.]
- Good for you.
Was he dating anyone with the initials "L.
C.
"? Kyle? Are you kidding me? I don't think he ever dated anybody.
Librarian confirms he was there all morning.
Has him on security footage.
- I told you.
- You're still a truant.
These officers are gonna take you back to the group home.
A waste of time.
I'm just gonna book it again, but whatever.
The girl he was with doesn't know anything.
Said they just met a couple hours ago.
- Love so fleeting.
- [CHUCKLES.]
Sergeant mentioned there's been an unusual number of stolen license plate reports around the area.
We're gonna head over to the station, - see what they have on video.
- All right.
Why don't we head to the thrift store? See what this Duke can tell us.
Yeah, he used to come in with his mother and they'd pick through things.
Nice lady.
Haven't seen her in a while.
- She died two years ago.
- Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
Maybe that's why he Why he what? Well, I remember seeing him out front a few times last summer.
Hanging around, hitting people up for money.
And sometimes he'd come in, but he never had more than a few dollars in his pocket.
[CELL PHONE CHIMES.]
Is he the sniper? Oh, we just need to talk to him.
- Just got this from Clinton.
- Excuse us.
Video from local PD.
Same make and model as our sniper van.
Mm-hmm.
And that right there is Kyle's accomplice.
Adult accomplice.
Changes the whole dynamic.
Well, thank you.
I appreciate your [SOFT TENSE MUSIC.]
Can I have a look at that picture back there, the one on the bottom left? And that check too.
Thank you.
Can you show me your phone again? - That's him.
- Mm-hmm.
Same guy.
Harris Folger.
How often does Folger shop here? All the time.
I never had a problem with him till he bounced that check.
Haven't seen him since.
Have you ever seen these two together? I noticed them talking outside a few times.
Maybe this is where they met.
Maybe.
Question is, where are they now? You became a man today, my friend.
How's it feel? [TENSE MUSIC.]
Honestly? Not that much different.
It's 'cause of all that dope you smoke.
I told you dulls the mind.
I would much rather be around someone who's high than Oh, this? - Just a little speed, man.
- [LAUGHS.]
You try working a graveyard shift without it.
Just another thing they do to you Get you addicted and they screw you when it counts.
Hmm? It's a good thing you did today.
A righteous thing.
Watching those golf douchebags take bullets Gave me the chills.
I heard some, uh, some ladies screaming their heads off.
No.
Listen, man.
Don't feel guilty about that.
Those are the same big shots that kill us by degree, day after day.
We're only doing to them what they do to us.
Look at me.
I get fired, kicked to the curb, nobody gives a damn.
The people we eliminated from the equation The equation? Yeah, the equation, like we said.
I'm just sorta lost of where we're at in that.
I mean, my dad died Yeah, look, and I'm real sorry that he did, but that just means that the equation is you and me now.
And them.
Your father died because he was serving them.
These people, this pandemic It's just a minor inconvenience to them.
They're out there playing golf, they're buying their Yeezys, while we're standing in line at the food bank for a damn loaf of Wonder Bread.
We're the us and they're the them.
- The answer part.
- That's right.
You get it, man.
You freaking get it.
You always have.
Hey, grab that crate over there.
Brothers in arms? Yeah.
Yeah.
[LAUGHS SOFTLY.]
Harris Folger, age 38.
Grew up right here in Wilkes-Barre.
He worked as a shift supervisor at a chemical plant until May of this year.
That's when the virus hit.
He and Kyle both got screwed by the pandemic.
If he's local, he knows the roads.
Shortcuts, hiding places.
He have a criminal record? Not even a parking ticket.
The only thing is, is point-of-sale background check at a local gun shop.
He bought an AR-15, a Glock 9-millimeter handgun, and a big haul of ammo.
- When? - First week of October.
Well, something triggered him.
That's when the killing spree started coming into focus.
I found the name of the chemical plant where he worked, and an address for an apartment in Miners' Mills.
All right.
Why don't you two see what his former employer can tell us? Rest of us will run down his apartment.
[SIGHS.]
I changed the locks a few months ago.
He was five months behind on the rent.
You know that's illegal, right? Folger lost his job because of the pandemic.
You were supposed to cut him some slack.
Hey, I got a family.
We gotta eat too.
Plus, in the middle of the summer, he brings a teenage boy here to live with him.
- Him? - Yeah.
Harris said he was his "stepson.
" You're saying there was a sexual relationship? I didn't really see anything, but whatever was going on in here, I didn't wanna know about it.
Cupboard's pretty bare in there.
Looks like Folger was living off ramen noodles and Hot Pockets.
Rental notices, utility bills piling up.
Folger was an everyman who was getting pushed over the edge.
Clinton's calling.
I'm gonna take this.
Hey, Clinton.
Yeah.
- What's that down there? - Spare bedroom.
Help yourself.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
This must have been where Kyle stayed.
- Real classy place.
- Yeah.
I got it.
Thanks.
I got some Intel from Clinton about Folger.
His former boss said he worked there for about ten years before he had to let him go 'cause the plant shut down.
- The virus? - Yeah.
Also, his marriage ended a year ago.
Apparently Folger was really pissed off about that.
What happened? Guess his ex-wife decided she didn't wanna be with a blue-collar guy working the night shift, so she left him for a finance guy who has a country club membership and a house down in Miami.
First he loses his wife, then his job.
He's holed up in this shoebox during the pandemic with barely enough food to eat, and the last insult hits.
He's homeless, and living out of his van.
That's when he goes to the gun shop.
Exactly.
All that misery broke him, and he wants somebody to pay.
Well, Folger and Kyle each had their lives destroyed by the pandemic in totally different ways.
Now they're fueling each other's disillusionment, their rage.
They latched onto each other when there was nothing else left.
The perfect storm.
Yeah.
These are good.
Kid definitely has some artistic talent.
An alien abduction scenario.
It takes a lot of time and commitment to make something like this.
Oh, my God, it's happening again.
Lakeview Marina and east Wilkes-Barre.
At least three people are reported dead in a mass-casualty shooting there.
[CELL PHONES CHIMING.]
The authorities have issued an active shooter alert for the surrounding area, and are warning both motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area near the marina.
A green van pulled up near the dock.
Then there's gunfire everywhere.
People were running, screaming.
I took cover, got a couple rounds off.
Can't say I hit anything with this peashooter they give me.
Yeah, maybe you turned them away.
Could've been a lot worse.
Four DOA, six in critical condition on the way to the hospital.
Could be time for a shelter-at-home order.
We got people running zigzags from their cars - to the grocery store.
- Yeah.
Get with the sheriff's department, compile a list of upscale public venues within a 50-mile radius.
We'll beef up security as much as possible.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
What you thinking? I'm thinking that Folger's the one who's driving this.
He's smart, and he's careful.
Kyle's the one thing that Folger can still control.
The boy's the weak link.
He's the one who's gonna make a mistake.
He doesn't have any family in the area to reach out to.
When I was a kid, my sensei at the dojo knew more about me than my mom and dad.
- Those flip books.
- Yeah? Kyle is into making art.
The last time I saw Kyle was in my art class, the day they shut the schools down.
Has he communicated with you since then? Or in Zoom class? I doubt the family has a laptop.
How well do you know Kyle? I had him for two years.
Super talented.
He would come to my classroom after school to work on his projects.
He had his heart set on going to art camp this summer, but it didn't happen.
- 'Cause of the pandemic? - Even before that.
His father didn't approve.
Kyle told me his dad said art is for losers.
Folger's more supportive of Kyle's creative side than his own father was.
He told me that his mom had passed.
She's the one who taught him to draw, took him to museums.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
I really don't see how he could be involved in this.
He is.
He is such a sensitive kid.
A gentle soul, really.
He made me a sympathy card when my grandmother died last year.
It was so sweet it made me cry.
And now you're telling me he's out there shooting random people? What is going on in this world? If he reaches out to you, please give us a call right away.
One last thing, Ms.
Diaz.
Was Kyle close with anybody with the initials L.
C.
? Kyle didn't have many friends in my class.
He did work on a mural with Lamont.
Lamont Carpenter.
Thank you.
In the wake of this second sniper attack, the Wilkes-Barre police are inviting people to stay vigilant and avoid any nonessential travel to the area.
[INDISTINCT NEWS REPORTING.]
Hey.
Kyle.
What are you doing? Nothing, just listening to music.
- Well, come here.
I wanna show you what's next.
[SIGHS.]
You got a problem, Kyle? What, what? Spit it out.
No, just, um, I don't know, maybe we should Maybe we should stop.
You gonna walk away from me like everybody else did? No I'm the only one who gives a damn about you, Kyle.
I took you in when you were roaming outside of that thrift shop begging for quarters.
You got somewhere better to go, get the hell out of my van.
[SNIFFS.]
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Hey, hey.
Sorry.
[LAUGHS.]
I'm just messing with you.
Look, I'm over this, too.
But it's just one more mission.
This one's personal.
After that, I got a bud in Texas Gonna get us into Mexico.
He has a ranch there, there's horses we can ride.
Or you can draw.
We good? Yeah? Yeah.
I mean, yeah, me and Kyle hung out a little.
It's not like we were best friends.
Are you more than friends? [SCOFFS.]
I'm not gay.
- Is Kyle? - I don't know.
And even if I did, why would I tell you guys? To save his life.
Kyle's in a lot of trouble, Lamont.
If you know how we can reach out to him or where he might be, now would be a good time to say something.
- What'd he do? - He shot some people.
No way.
I know one or two kids who would do something like that.
But Kyle? Not even close.
We once tagged a pillar under a bridge and he was paranoid about it for months.
He thought his own father would turn him in to the police.
They didn't get along, did they? Yeah, his father wanted him to work out and play football.
Kept promising him this used Camaro that he didn't even want.
After his father got sick, Kyle told me he was glad there couldn't be a funeral so he didn't have to go and pretend to be sad.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Tell me we got a break here.
Everybody within 100 miles has eyes out for that van.
Not one sighting.
They're hunkered down somewhere secluded.
- They only come out to hunt.
- We've run the table on all their friends and acquaintances.
Nothing.
The sheriff's department pulled some strings to unseal the paperwork on Kyle's juvie arrest.
He was busted for shoplifting art supplies.
Following his passion.
His mother encouraged it.
He lost her.
His father ridiculed him.
He reverted to stealing.
An alien abduction The creature at the end of the story is a female.
Maternal representation.
It's as if the boy who's transported to the spacecraft is being welcomed back into the womb.
This is a child longing for his mother, like Tali after Angelyne passed.
- [KEYBOARD CLACKING.]
- This is interesting.
Kyle's juvie report lists his dead mother as Lisa Calhoun, not Lisa Dennison.
Calhoun was her maiden name.
The "L.
C.
" in the heart on the sidewalk is his mom? Kyle hated his father so much he refused to pin the Dennison surname on her when he gave his family information to the police.
We have a kid with a mommy problem.
I think I know someone who might be able to reach him.
Is this via social media? No, no, no, this is gonna be broadcast live and then replayed on the news in the hope that he sees it and he responds to you.
I don't know what to say to him.
We'll help you with that.
But I'm just his art teacher.
Whether you know it or not, you're important to him.
You're the closest thing he has to family.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
I don't know.
I wouldn't ask you to put yourself out there like this if we had another option.
Kyle's under the influence of a man hell-bent on self-destruction.
Now if we don't change that dynamic, it's not gonna end well for Kyle.
You told us he made you a condolence card.
That shows me this is a kid with empathy, with a good heart.
We need to appeal to that, appeal to his humanity.
Okay.
When? Now.
We've arranged to do it in your classroom even though the school's shut down.
It's a familiar place to him, and one with good memories.
Hopefully he'll see you and remember you had a connection there.
Hi, Kyle.
It's Ms.
Diaz.
I know you're in some kind of trouble.
I don't know if you did what they say you did, but it's important that you turn yourself in before anyone else gets hurt.
Call the number on the screen, and I'll be the one who picks up.
Or you can tell me where you are and we'll come get you.
You and I shared something special, right, Kyle? We both love art.
You probably don't know this, but the reason I teach at this school is kids like you.
I know how much your drawing and your sketches meant to you.
I remember when you told me what your father did to punish you when he found out you stole those brush pens from the art store.
How he went into your room and tore up every drawing on your wall.
But you didn't let that stop you.
You were strong.
You didn't let him defeat you.
And that's what you need to do now, Kyle.
Be strong, and follow your heart, and do what you know is right.
Hey Katz, what's taking so long? Well done, Ms.
Diaz.
I'm sorry I went off script.
No, thanks for reaching down and being so open.
- You were great.
- I gotta take this.
Excuse me.
Louise, what's going on? You're calling me at work about that? I just hope he was watching.
Fine, send it.
[CELL PHONE DINGS.]
[SIGHS.]
Okay, I see it.
That's his girlfriend.
I can't get into this with you right now, okay? I gotta go.
I'm sorry.
Your father again? No.
My sister, about my father.
Ms.
Diaz, do you have any of Kyle's artwork? I'd love to see it.
I should.
[SIGHS DEEPLY.]
I was saving these student projects for the art fair, if things ever get back to normal.
These are Kyle's.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
L.
C.
Lisa Calhoun.
I remember that one.
He sketched the spot where his mother died.
A shrine he made, by the road.
You mind if we hang on to these? - Sure.
- Thank you.
One teacher who believes in you can change your life.
Or save it.
Let's hope she got through to him.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
Your clip is full? Yeah.
Go for it.
[PANTING.]
- Do I have to shoot them all? - No.
Just make sure you hit Charlene.
Why don't you do it? Because it is your turn, Kyle.
Hey, she threw us out, man, like we were garbage.
Doesn't that piss you off? Yeah, but her kids won't have a mom.
Well, who cares? You'll be doing them a favor.
Look at her.
She's taking down that fried chicken like a fat cow.
Go on.
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
What what what's wrong? - I can't.
- Yes, you can.
Ready? Three Two - Come on.
- No.
Don't you turn on me now, man! Just line her up, be a man, and pull the damn trigger! Go! [GUNSHOTS RINGING.]
[PEOPLE SHOUTING, SCREAMING.]
- Clear the park? - Yes, sir.
Any casualities? Kid sprained his ankle running away.
Also, a lady who was picnicking here told my guys she'd already spoken to the FBI because she knew one of the snipers.
Charlene Bukowski.
- Folger's landlady.
- They were gunning for her.
Any activity inside the van? Nothing we can see or hear.
But we also didn't wanna get too close until you guys got here.
Thank you, sergeant.
Good job.
You and your squad were on point.
There's a sniper slot cut in the back door behind the license plate, but I don't see any weapons poking through.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[LOUDSPEAKER FEEDBACK.]
Harris Folger, Kyle Dennison.
I'm Agent Jess LaCroix of the FBI.
We have your van surrounded.
I want you to open the doors, come out slowly with your hands first where we can see them.
Hey, we got one heat signature.
Looks like a person laying face up in the back of the van.
Whoever that is, they're not moving.
We can see you in the van.
Move forward to the front seat.
If you need help, raise your hand.
[MIC HISSES.]
Hey, we can't wait.
We gotta get inside that van.
It could be an ambush.
Or whoever's inside could be dying.
It was only a matter of time before there was tension between those two.
One of them must have snapped, shot the other one, and got away.
We're moving on the van.
Two gunshots to the chest.
Close range.
- He's gone.
- AR-15's here.
- Where's the Glock? - Kyle must have taken it.
Carjacking just got called in.
Diner parking lot, about three blocks from here.
White teenage male with a gun, took off in a black Volkswagen Jetta.
Get a BOLO out, armed and dangerous.
I want every available unit you have and an airship Before he gets too far.
Lisa Calhoun's car accident, where was that? State Road 415 near Harveys Lake.
- About ten miles from here.
- Why would Kyle go there? Dying men on the battlefield cry out for their mothers.
Kyle's run out of options.
He killed his accomplice.
His last impulse will be to seek comfort from his mother.
And he might use that gun to join her.
I'm sorry.
I know it's been a while.
Things have been kinda crazy lately.
So that foster home I was telling you about last time? Yeah, most of those kids were jerks.
I met this older guy.
He took me in, and treated me pretty good Better than Dad, even.
And I know that's not saying much.
[MELANCHOLY MUSIC.]
But at least he let me do my sketches and my flip books.
And I wish you could've seen some of those.
I'm sorry about what we did, him and I What I did.
I don't know if God can ever forgive me, but I hope that you can.
'Cause I'm really not a bad person.
Am I? I miss you so much, Mom.
I'm just so scared, and there's nothing you can do to help me.
I'm in so much pain.
I just want it to stop.
Hey, Kyle.
I'm Agent LaCroix.
You can call me Jess.
You mind if we talk for a minute? Why? I don't want you to hurt yourself.
You don't care about me.
That's not true.
I've learned a lot about you these last few days.
I know you got dealt a bad hand in life.
I realize now how difficult that's been for you.
I know you struggled after your mother passed.
You don't know anything about me.
So just leave me alone so I can do this.
No, no, no, no.
Okay, Kyle, Kyle.
Right.
I don't know you.
I don't know you.
I'm sorry.
Just hear me out.
I know about loss.
That's something we share.
Someone I'm very close with lost their mother at about the same age you did.
Broke her heart.
Mine too.
But we had each other to hold on to.
- I don't have anybody now.
- Now that's not true.
That's not true.
Ms.
Diaz, she showed me this.
She's not gonna let you down.
I can call her right now.
She kept it? She kept a lot of the work you did in her class.
It means a lot to her.
But you pull that trigger right now, and all the beautiful work you did is just gonna be ugly reminders of what happened here today.
I want you to do something for me, Kyle, all right? I want you to think about what matters to you most.
You have your talent.
You can create and get joy out of that.
Nobody can take that away from you.
Nobody.
Except you.
I know this is a sacred place for you.
You can honor your mother's memory by respecting that.
I'm not gonna lie to you and tell you you're not gonna be punished for what you've done.
But some day you can come back here, and you can speak to her just like you did today.
Don't give that up, man.
[SOBS.]
That's good.
Just put the gun down.
Please.
And put your hands on your knees for me.
That's good.
Thank you, Kyle.
Come on, let's go.
You mind if I call Ms.
Diaz, let her know you're okay? Okay.
[SIGHS DEEPLY.]
It always comes back to family.
For better or for worse.
I don't see what the big deal is.
I have a friend on the backstretch, he got us a tour of one of the barns.
You should've seen her face light up when Tali got on that race mare.
It was cool, Dad.
They even let me ride him a little.
Her.
Mares are usually female.
[LAUGHTER.]
You do any betting when you were there? Here comes the FBI interrogation.
One little bet, okay? It was right there.
It's never just one.
Like when you gambled away my college funds.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[CLEARS THROAT, COUGHS, SIGHS.]
Tali, come on.
Let's go help your grandfather in the kitchen.
Boy, you really know how to clear a room.
When was the last time you went to a Gamblers Anonymous meeting? I don't know.
When was the last time you went to AA? That's not the same thing, Dad.
I haven't had a drink in over three years.
Well, maybe you should.
Loosen that stick up your ass.
- Byron.
- What? He started it.
You used to love it when I took you to the racetrack.
No, I never loved it.
You just dragged me along.
I would rather be with my friends.
- What friends? - Guys, guys.
Can we please not do this? [SIGHS.]
You haven't seen each other in so long.
This is supposed to be a happy time.
[SIGHS.]
I think we should tell him.
Tell him what? Your father and I are getting married.
[LAUGHS SOFTLY.]
