FBI: Most Wanted (2020) s03e12 Episode Script

El Píncho

1 This is the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
Happy are those who are called to His supper.
The body of Christ.
As this holy oil anoints your forehead, may God's spirit dwell in your heart and give you peace.
Close all the fire suppression doors.
I want all cells locked down except D block.
Carnahan, Walsh, get these prisoners in order.
Give me a head count now! Inmate, stop right there.
On the ground, now.
Code 99, prison break.
Code 9-9.
Let's go, let's go.
Let's go.
Do not let that helicopter leave the yard.
Open fire on the chopper.
Open fire.
Yeah, I'll be right there.
- Kristin, hey.
- Hi.
- How's everything going? - Fine, thanks.
Come on, it's not fine.
You haven't talked to me in weeks.
- Yes, I have.
- Text messages don't count.
Are you mad because I have a girlfriend? All right, you want to know why I'm mad? Because you tried to hide it from me.
And worse, you put the kids in the middle, telling them to keep secrets from me, Nick.
I mean, what kind of example is that setting? It's not like that.
I was gonna tell you.
- I just - You just? I don't know, I guess I was worried you might be jealous.
Okay, Nick, look.
You're the father of my children.
I will always love you for that.
But I'm not in love with you anymore, all right? Understood.
Maybe I was more worried about Meredith.
Okay, you know what? What does that have to do with me and the kids? See, you do this.
You twist the conversations.
I'm not twisting anything.
You don't have to tell me how you're feeling.
You were always reserved, but ever since you went undercover and got in that car accident, you've been inscrutable like a vault.
Inscrutable? Good, well, guess what? You know what? You don't have to worry about it anymore.
I'm not worried.
I just want to talk to you.
Or listen, whatever you need.
Right now I need to go.
Have a good day.
All right, this is Maldonado's third escape from prison His first here in the States.
What was he doing in Allenwood? DEA writted him there from the supermax in Florida for interrogations.
His escape was well-coordinated.
Contained explosion Enough to clear a cell block, but not start a riot.
And a hole pre-cut into a fence.
- Oh, yeah, and a helicopter.
- Clearly, El Píncho was still running the Zapotec cartel from prison.
- El Píncho? - Yeah, his nickname.
When he was coming up, he impaled a guy with a broken end of a shovel.
Body stayed like that, exposed for days.
Way to send a message.
He tortured and killed an undercover agent in Monterrey.
To us, he's Estevan Martín Maldonado.
We won't deify him with his nickname.
His cartel is responsible for half the coke, heroin, and fentanyl on the East Coast.
Did you work his cartel in Miami? Miami's run by the Colombians.
Zapotec gives them a wide berth, but Maldonado's very much a disciple of Escobar, right down to the exotic animals.
Well, I heard the first time he was arrested, they found chunks of stash lining his cheetah's cage, but the money was meant for the cheetahs in case anything happened to them, like they were his family.
Family is very important to him.
He didn't have one growing up.
His mother abandoned him when he was seven years old.
He bounced around Catholic orphanages till the cartel took him in.
So he'd make sure everyone in the cartel, right down to the cheetah, is provided for.
- Money breeds loyalty.
- Yeah.
You know, he had MexFeds on payroll.
That's how he escaped the first few times.
Where did he go when he escaped then? The Sierra Madre.
It's where his network is.
All along the 700 miles of the range, so he makes it there, we don't see him again.
Well, let's make sure that doesn't happen.
Now we don't have Ortiz this week, so I need everybody to step up, make him proud.
He'll be drunk on a beach at his brother's wedding by the time we crack this one Probably take all the credit.
- Is he in California? - Yeah, where it's 80 degrees.
Sir, can you confirm the number of dead - in El Píncho's escape? - Not at this time, but assume that Maldonado and his accomplice are armed and extremely dangerous.
If you see anything or suspect anything, call 911 immediately.
We need your help.
- Agent LaCroix.
- Yeah.
I'm Captain Roland, head of Tac-Ops Division.
Our search turned up nothing on foot so far.
Stay on that.
What about the helicopter? Eye witness places it heading east.
Same direction as New York.
Check your firearms, please.
Descriptions are consistent with a Twinstar chopper.
Those have a top speed of 150 miles per hour.
Max range 450 miles.
Must've been just under three hours.
That's the bird's max range.
Let's put some eyes in the sky.
Gonna do the best they can to stay off of radar.
So we're looking for a drop off area where Maldonado can access a different type of transportation A clearing or whatever Where they can either land the chopper or at least get low enough where it's safe to exit.
We're looking for tire tracks.
We're looking for witnesses.
- Scent.
- How y'all doing? Greg Galson.
DEA Philly Field Office.
You stick with us.
We're gonna need your expertise.
What do we know about the guard - who escaped with Maldonado? - Name's Charlie Simmich.
He never popped up on the radar as part of the cartel.
On paper, he's the opposite of El Píncho.
- Happily married, steady job.
- The perfect wingman.
- Where's the warden? - She's waiting for you.
- You're all coming? - That's how we roll.
Tell us about the guard who helped him escape.
Simmich had been on the job four years.
No disciplinary action.
What kind of access did the guard have to Maldonado? Directly? None.
Simmich was assigned to the east tower the whole time Maldonado's been here.
Thank you.
PD's at Simmich's house.
His wife was found stabbed.
No sign of forced entry.
Preliminary time of death, early this morning.
He's cutting old ties to his life here.
Nothing left to play on his conscience.
Who else had access to Maldonado? Well, he's a supermax transfer, so we took extra precautions.
Same set of guards.
They're being detained and interviewed.
I've also called back all the guards to help aid in the search.
And the explosion in the furnace? - Someone brought in the C4? - It seemed that way, yes.
Any changes to Maldonado's routine lately? No, he gets one hour of exercise a day.
An old TV in his cell.
No access to computers.
No visitors allowed except for clergy.
- How often? - Once a week.
Father Ashton did his communion services this morning.
Is Father Ashton assigned to the prison? Yes, but he doesn't live here.
He's got a parsonage in Turbotville.
Let's grab his background and go see him.
I assume you have surveillance on the cell blocks.
Yes, we're pulling it now.
They found the helicopter.
They didn't get very far.
Shots fired must've brought it down.
Yeah, but no signs of Maldonado or Simmich.
They only found the pilot's body.
I can try and run facial rec, but there's not much left after the impact.
Let's get the dogs over there.
This crash obviously wasn't part of the plan.
Bad news for them, but good news for us.
- They'll be forced to improvise.
- So will we.
No tail numbers.
No black box.
All we got right now is the on board navigation.
I can hack the on board navigation system.
- Footprints.
- Two sets.
They're still traveling together.
Come on.
Police are on the hunt for two fugitives at large after a prison break earlier this morning.
I mean, we spent the 4th of July with Charlie.
Decorated his hubcaps for the parade.
What happened to him? Why would he do this? Don't open the door for anyone.
Not even Nance and Stella.
Stay inside.
I love you.
- Love you too, Katie-did.
- Love you too.
Come home soon.
Authorities are asking for the public's help.
The governor will be going live in 30 minutes to announce a substantial reward for any information leading to the capture of El Píncho and prison guard Charles Simmich.
Now these men are armed and extremely dangerous Katie, go hide now.
Who else is in here? Watch her.
Charlie, please.
I'm sorry.
Could've been dead since yesterday.
Want to give me a hand? I'll send a photo to Jess.
- I'll go get ERT here now.
- Okay.
Kristin, what's happening? Priest is dead.
One shot to the chest.
He's been here a while.
I just sent you his photo.
That's him.
That's Father Ashton.
That's the priest that works here? Yes, why? Well, I wanna show you something, okay? I'm gonna rewind this footage.
You see that? Oh, my God.
- What is it? - It's not the same person.
There was a different priest here this morning.
How would he have gotten in? Well, he could've killed Father Ashton and stolen his credentials.
Yeah, but he'd still need to get through security check.
Unless, of course, Simmich got him in.
I need to talk to Danny.
This guy's a ghost.
Yeah, holy ghost.
Hana just got the coordinates of where the helicopter was headed.
She and Galson are headed there now.
It's an airport in Scranton.
Maldonado must have a plane.
- You two meet her there.
- Yup, we're on it.
This is the FBI.
Cut your engines.
Everybody off the plane now! Show us your hands.
I said everybody off the plane! Now! El Píncho, the kingpin of the Zapotec cartel, pioneered the use of long-ranged tunnels to import drugs into the United States.
We've had two tips come in.
They were spotted at the Walmart between Harrisburg and Scranton.
Could be stopping for clothes, looking to change their appearance.
Pull down the cameras from the store and from the parking lot.
Copy that.
Let's dispatch two teams there right away.
Think we should consider a second set of roadblocks up around Scranton.
That's a good idea.
Let's do it.
- You Agent LaCroix? - That's me.
US Marshal Samuels.
We'll take it from here.
Take what from here? MOU says we have authority on prison escapes.
Last time I checked, this was a federal crime, and you're about four hours late, my friend.
We'll call DC, see what they say.
All right, you go ahead and do that.
We're gonna keep looking for the fugitives while you make your phone calls.
I know the feeling.
Ugh, it's all just wasting time when the man who killed my nephew's out there roaming around free in the world right now.
Maldonado killed your nephew? My nephew OD-ed on El Píncho's heroin Heroin, by the way, that was mainly fentanyl.
What was his name? Joby.
And he died in a crappy car in the parking lot of a mall.
He was 20.
- I'm sorry.
- Yeah.
Screw it.
I'm not gonna sit around and wait for this to sort itself out.
Besides, they're not even gonna know I'm gone.
Hey, Jess, I think I've got something.
I'm gonna head out for a minute.
Good, go.
Any lead helps.
I'll go with you.
Before we "Cagney and Lacey" this, you should know that I'm gonna do whatever it takes to get El Píncho, legit or otherwise.
I won't hold you back.
- Let's go.
- What's your name? - Tara McPherson, you? - Kristin Gaines.
- Can we take your wheels? - Sure can.
Maldonado's girlfriend is here.
I'm not Estevan's girlfriend.
I'm his wife.
Really? Because as far as we know, he's been married to the same woman in Mexico.
He calls me his wife.
He loves me.
Tell us who you're working with.
Who's calling the shots on the operation? You know, you'd be doing yourself a favor by talking to us.
You gave up a lot today to be there with your husband.
- He's the love of my life.
- Oh, really? Not your child? - I don't have any children.
- Boy or girl? I don't know what you're talking about.
You're lactating.
My wife has the same stains on half her shirts right now.
Our son is two months old.
How old's your child? Estevan Maldonado has been in since 2019.
There's no way your child is his.
There's no baby gear on that plane and no baby.
So what that tells me is, you're willing to leave your child behind to be with your husband.
If you tell us who you're working with, we can make it possible for you to see your child again.
You're a new mom.
I know you want that more than anything.
I can't.
Are you really that afraid that you're willing to walk away from your own flesh and blood? I don't have a child.
- She's obviously terrified.
- And I don't think we're gonna get anything else out of her.
Pilot's not speaking either.
The MexFeds have him based out of Puebla.
It's an honor to fly the boss back home.
Did we get any information off Emiliana's or the pilot's phone? Nothing.
Okay, we need to figure out who's in charge of this operation.
Not Emiliana.
Not the pilot.
Well, someone's obviously improvising with Maldonado and Simmich.
What about the fake priest? We have his DNA, but it's not in our system.
Let's check the tip lines, see if there's anything credible coming through.
Okay, sure.
The one advantage that we have is that Simmich and Maldonado don't know that their plane has been compromised.
I don't know if we can count on that.
Local authorities remain on high alert, and the FBI intercepted a plane sources say was bound for Mexico minutes before it took off.
Please continue to be aware of your surroundings, and if you see anything suspicious Maldonado and Simmich are real time with us now.
They know exactly what we know.
All right, what do we know about these two guys? I'm just surprised they're still together.
Simmich definitely seems like a liability.
But Simmich proved his usefulness.
That's how they got to the Langtry house.
I'm not sure what the arrangement is between these two.
I don't understand their relationship.
Look, we can just take her car and be on our way.
Where? Gabriel's? He can get us to the city.
They won't know we switched cars.
Come on.
We'll make it.
We're gonna have everything we talked about, everything we dreamed.
That's over now.
I can't have that out there.
I was just trying to survive, to get the hell out of there.
Take off your clothes.
What did you do before you became a marshal? Uh, I helped my dad mostly.
He was a biologist a researcher.
He actually studied snakes in Costa Rica.
- A snake researcher? - Right.
Worm snakes.
It actually perfectly prepared me for a career in law enforcement.
Well You trust people? Uh, you have to, you know? On this job Especially out in the field.
Well, we're out on the field.
You trust me, Kris? Kris? We're at Kris now? 'Cause I think I trust you.
It's just you feel a bit holed up inside.
Like you've spent a lot of time out there on your own.
Well, I, um, did a lot of undercover work in Miami before I came out here.
Something went sideways on you, didn't it? I had to be extracted.
- Did you get hurt? - No.
- But you feel like a failure? - I'll put it this way.
It was an abrupt end to years of work, and it resulted in no arrests.
So the people are still out there that I was investigating.
You ever think about going after 'em? All the time.
Thank you.
Simmich is dead.
The silver Nissan Rogue from the Langtry house was found at a Lucy Allans' place.
Simmich was found next to the body.
She'd been sexually assaulted.
It's a risky move, taking the time to do that on the run.
- Did he change up the cars? - Yeah.
She drove a 2008 blue Honda Fit.
I'll put a BOLO out.
Maldonado's still gonna try to get to Mexico.
You don't think he'll head north to Canada, do you? That's Sinaloa, not Zapotec.
Not a lot of resources for him up there.
He'll probably just follow the drug lords he knows where the infrastructure already exists.
Can you lay out the supply chains for us? Yeah.
It starts with the tunnels.
Zapotec moves drugs from Mexico into the States underground.
Drugs land, then they're bricked into semis that then head up the seaboard.
Semis lay over at rest stops outside of Philadelphia and Manhattan.
The drugs are transferred into smaller cars then taken to safe houses where the drugs are broken down and then distributed.
But the nitty gritty of these supply chains, I mean, what's happening when and where, that's not upper management.
So Maldonado won't know how to get to the supply chains.
On his own? Nah.
And the fake priest that gave Maldonado communion? Is unknown quantity.
I've never seen him before.
He could've been pulled in to this job as a one off by the cartel.
May not even have communication with Maldonado.
Well, let's say that's the case, Maldonado's on his own.
What does he do? Where does he go? - Emiliana has a brother.
- I have him here.
He has a sheet at least a mile long.
Gabriel Fererya.
Petty theft, indecent exposure, two arrests for sexual assault A real model citizen.
Well, maybe Emiliana's child is with him, and that's why she keeps on denying it.
Where do you go when you're on your own? You go where you know.
So if Maldonado knows this guy He could be headed to him for help.
I say we find him and start radius searches from there.
Easier said than done.
I mean, I don't have any last knowns for him.
Well, keep digging.
Not all these people can be ghosts.
You know, if you ever wanna bug out and go hunt down the people you were after, I got your back.
I know Bogota.
Caught more than a few snakes down there.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
Just putting it out there.
Good to know.
There he is.
Hey! FBI, stop.
Come on! Hold still.
- Who are you? - I'm Joby's aunt.
- Oh.
- Oh.
And your drugs killed him.
I didn't make him take them.
Oh, thanks for the confession.
Now the location of your stash house.
I ain't giving you nothing.
I don't like to ask questions twice.
Where is it? Listen, you're looking at 20 to 30 years, man.
Where's the stash house? Kristin, you're on speaker.
What's up? We got the location of Maldonado's stash house.
- Tara had a source.
- Who's Tara? Tara McPherson.
She's with the marshals.
I left with her earlier to chase that lead I mentioned.
Yeah, but you didn't say she's a marshal.
Can we trust the source? - Yes.
- You sure? Emiliana has a brother in Newark, and we're headed that way right now.
Jess, the info's legit.
We need to hit the stash house first.
Those things change locations all the time.
Look, this one's active right now.
They just got a new shipment in.
If we hit this house, we give up any chance Maldonado goes to see his brother-in-law.
Okay, well, we're heading there right now.
We're gonna need backup.
All right, we cover both places.
You two take the brother in Newark.
Okay, the rest of us are coming to you, Kristin.
Send me the address.
You two cover.
We'll take the back.
You good? Put down your weapon.
On the ground! How long you been working for Maldonado? You tried to steer us to the brother's house, but Maldonado was never headed there, but you were in contact with him the whole time.
Is that right? So where's he headed to now? - I don't know.
- Stop lying.
He'll kill me if I tell you.
Don't you have a child to protect? The baby that Emiliana had Isn't that yours? So where's the baby now? He's safe.
Wait, let me get this straight.
You're baby daddy to the boss' wife? I didn't mean to fall in love.
So why didn't you just kill Maldonado when you had the chance? Because to go after the cartel boss is to Is to have a target on your back your whole life.
Well, you've got one there anyway.
They're gonna come after you in prison.
I I can't go away.
I'll never make it.
Can you help me? Can you can you help me? Please? All right, we can help you.
We can help secure your child.
Neither you or Emiliana can take care of him from behind bars.
We can give him a shot at a decent life.
I can't tell you where he is.
No one can know.
Then you're on your own.
Look at this.
Okay, that's heavy.
- Yeah.
- That's too heavy.
Wow, drugs inside a Virgin Mary statue? I mean, that's like an express ticket to hell, right? Yeah.
I saw one of these at Father Ashton's parsonage.
Maybe he was connected to the cartel and found God on his way to helping Maldonado escape? Yeah, I'd say God's got some fingerprints in this operation.
Okay, check this out.
It's a few miles from here.
Is that some kind of compound? It's a convent.
It sits at a intersection of hidden mine shafts.
So it's a network of tunnels.
That's a Zapotec signature.
Tunnels that lead to highways, highways that lead to New York.
So you're saying this convent is the distribution hub for the Zapotec cartel? Trace it backward Highway to tunnel, tunnel to convent, convent to stash house, stash house to street.
- It's perfect.
- Let's go find the boys.
Who are you? Píncho.
El Píncho is in prison.
I escaped this morning.
You haven't seen the news? No.
We deal with Luís only and Luís alone.
Luís sent me here.
He's on his way.
How do I get to the tunnels? You said Luís is on his way? Let him show you.
Back up.
I'm not here to hurt you.
I just want to get the hell out of here.
We're on the same side.
Look at my face.
It's me.
- FBI, nobody moves.
- Freeze! - FBI! - Hold right there.
Don't move! Drop your weapon.
Don't do anything stupid.
You can still get out of this alive.
I'm not going anywhere.
Hey, listen to me.
Píncho, look at me.
You were raised by women like her Good women, decent women, doing God's work.
You let her go.
- Luís! - Píncho, this way.
Let her go.
Back off.
Back off or I'll kill her.
Move! Keep moving.
Okay, there's a possible entrance two miles from here.
Take a squad and head back down that way.
Barnes and I are heading in.
- Let's go.
- No.
- Move or I'll kill you.
- No.
No, no.
You want to live, you need me alive.
There's nothing you can do to me that I haven't already survived.
Not a damn thing.
I'll kill you, bitch.
Go ahead.
Oh, you got nothing to live for? Oh, I got plenty, but I'm not gonna be your dog.
Come on.
Come on.
Go ahead, I'm right here.
Kristin! Move.
Move! - Take the shot.
- We don't have a shot.
Take the shot! I don't have the shot.
Kristin! Roll over.
Get him out of here.
You sure you're gonna be okay? Yeah.
You are my hero.
I'm just glad I made it through.
Of course you made it through.
'Cause you're a rockstar and you've been through hell.
Offer stands.
Thank you, US Deputy Marshal.
You know, I actually feel like I should have a sign over my head that says, "in it for the pension.
" You feel me on that? I do.
Yeah, I do.
You can just drink straight from the bottle if you want.
I won't judge.
Listen, I haven't been forthcoming with you about something About the year I was undercover.
I was taken hostage by some pretty nasty people who, um, figured out I was on the job and they wanted me to give up the people in the operation.
And, uh They had me on a boat.
They took my clothes.
They injected me with I have no idea what.
And everything that you can imagine happened to me in that room.
So the scars on your back? They're not from a car accident.
It took my team three days to find me.
And thank God they did 'cause I was so close to talking.
But they got me out.
And a month later, I was home.
Why didn't you tell me? Because I didn't want it to exist in the space between us.
I know that's really hard for you to understand, but When you're on this job, it's like home is the escape, right? It's the only place where you can just put it all away.
We could've talked about it.
I didn't want to talk.
I just wanted to keep it inside.
Look, Nick, I could've died today, and I made myself feel nothing.
Like nothing.
Just feeling nothing is how I survived the boat, but feeling nothing is Is keeping me broken, and I'm tired.
I'm so tired.
What do you need from me? You're already doing it.
You are.
Just be their father.
Um You know, you keep asking me how I'm feeling.
You wanna know the answer? Yeah.
I feel free, Nick.
Like I'm finally free.
