Hawaii Five-O (1968) s09e16 Episode Script

Elegy in a Rain Forest

Must be a hundred thousand cops looking for me by now.
Why aren't you out running instead of standing here rapping with us? Nature Boy here is gonna show me the shortest route across those mountains.
And you're going with us.
For God's sake, that's my daughter up there.
What if something happens to her? What if Lucien finds her? McGarrett? Hi.
I never hurt nobody.
[SCOFFS.]
Hold it.
You get on the intercom.
Tell the driver to pull over.
Tell him I'm sick.
I'm tossing my cookies.
Frank.
- Yeah? - The prisoner's sick.
- So? - Better pull over, he's throwing up.
Okay.
- Okay, Pak? - Yeah, okay.
CHIN HO: Hey, Steve! Steve.
Hey, Steve.
McGARRETT: Yeah, Chin, what do you got? CHIN HO: Marcus Lucien just escaped.
McGARRETT: Escaped? How? CHIN HO: Broke out of a prison van, killed a guard.
McGARRETT: Has H.
P.
D.
Been notified? CHIN HO: Yeah, Steve.
- Search teams are standing by.
- Okay, let's move.
[CHATTERING.]
All right, all right.
- Hey, all right.
- Flowers in the rain! KAREN: Picking flowers in the rain! Okay.
All right, all right, all right.
Hey, everybody listen.
Everybody listen, okay.
Now, remember, we have to be back here by 2 sharp.
Two sharp.
We wanna get back before dark.
So who wants to get back before dark? - I do.
- Ha, ha.
Remember, Dean Willis is expecting big things from us.
He wants one unclassified species of at least the sesbania or the tomentosa or the amaranths.
Uh, think he'd settle for a poinsettia? [ALL LAUGH.]
If you'd settle for a failing grade.
Karen, a failing grade? That'll be the day.
Hey, I tell you, rain or no rain, get the flowers, okay? - Let's go.
- Okay.
Hey, Karen.
Hey, uh, why don't you and I make a team of it.
[KAREN CHUCKLES.]
- A team effort, know what I mean? KAREN: Mm-hm.
Uh, you know, besides not being able to pronounce them, I don't even know what those lousy flowers look like.
Ha, ha.
That's because they don't grow on football fields.
There are pictures of them in there.
Good luck, Rich.
Picking flowers in the rain.
McGARRETT: Two years of dogged work to find that butcher.
Another year of delays, postponements and appeals.
We finally get a conviction and we can't even deliver him to prison.
What about that rumor we picked up on? The accomplice who was gonna help him off the island? There is no way he's gonna get off this island now.
No way.
If there is an accomplice, I'm gonna know about it.
All right, you've all been briefed.
Remember, I want each team to stay on its respective coordinate.
Now, this is our present position, approximately three miles from where Lucien escaped.
Any idea where he headed, Mr.
McGarrett? Well, a witness saw him heading for the mountains.
So I would assume he'd try to get over them.
Probably come out over here at, uh, Waipi'o or Haleiwa.
Other teams will be closing in from that side.
Now, any questions? All right, gentlemen, let's move out.
CHIN HO: There he is, Duke.
DUKE: Right.
CHIN HO: Looks like Sancho dropped his jug.
[KNOCKS.]
Lighten up, will you? You guys are leaning on a minority person.
Get up, Sancho.
- We wanna talk.
- About what? About what? Well, give us straight answers and we'll forget we saw you.
I got this feeling I ain't gonna like the questions, the questions.
You heard about your old pal Lucien escaping today? I told you I wasn't gonna like them, like them.
You and Lucien were pretty tight.
Used to be right.
Till he went squirrelly.
You know what I mean, I mean? Word's out that somebody's gonna help get him off the island.
Could be.
Maybe, I don't know, I don't know.
Well, take a minute and think.
With your record, if it turns out you're withholding information, you're back in the slammer a long time.
In the slammer.
Maybe I heard something, something.
Only you gotta forget where you got it.
We already have.
Guy's name is Homer Wamano.
Lives on Kapulu.
That's all I got, got.
I swear.
[SHRIEKS.]
[WOMAN SINGING OVER RADIO.]
Hey.
You're under arrest.
[LAUGHING.]
Let's have a party.
[LIGHT JAZZ MUSIC PLAYING OVER RADIO.]
Wonder if they don't find her.
I said, wonder if they don't find her, Jerry.
Just quiet, okay? Just quiet.
JERRY: Is there any sign of her? Nothing.
What are we gonna do? Better get down to the Coast Guard relay station, report her missing.
MAN [OVER RADIO.]
: We interrupt this program to bring you a special news bulletin.
At 7:35 this morning, Marcus Lucien, recently convicted of multiple rape-murders, made a dramatic escape while being transferred to state prison.
An extensive manhunt under the direction of Five-0's Steve McGarrett is underway in the mountains due east of Kaneohe Bay.
That's just over the ridge.
All campers and hikers are being evacuated out of this general area by park rangers.
Lucien has been described as armed and extremely dangerous.
More on this dramatic manhunt as the news comes in.
- Karen.
- Now back to our music.
Let's go.
[JOHNNY CASH'S "BIG IRON" PLAYING OVER RADIO.]
Steve.
The butcher was here.
McGarrett to Central.
[MOANING.]
Oh.
Oh.
KAREN: Who Who are you? [GROANS THEN CHUCKLES.]
[CHUCKLES.]
How did I get here? Did you bring me here? What's your name? David.
Can't you talk, David? My name is Karen.
Oh.
Does this mean something special to you? Did somebody give that to you when you were a little boy? Your mother? No? Your mother died when you were a baby? Oh.
Well, did your father give it to you? Oh.
[KAREN CHUCKLES.]
Your father was a fireman.
He died fighting a fire.
I'm sorry.
That's strange.
I didn't order a chopper.
But we did go back and look for her, Mr.
Manicote.
We must have covered half the mountain.
And you didn't see any sign of her? No, sir.
John, what are you doing up here? Got a call from the police department saying that my daughter disappeared while she was out here on a class field trip.
Steve, it's been several hours.
And with that maniac running around loose, I had the helicopter bring me up here.
I'm sorry to hear that, John.
We'll be on the alert for her and I'll inform the other teams to do likewise.
That's not good enough, Steve.
I'm going with you.
John, I'm not authorized to take civilians on a mission of this type.
Now, in your position, you should know that.
Steve, for God's sake, that's my daughter up there.
What if something happens to her? What if Lucien finds her? - Or, God forbid, already has.
- I don't have time to argue, John.
Steve.
Please.
Please.
She's my only child.
All right, let's go.
So the people you were sent to live with never could understand why you couldn't talk, huh? And they teased you.
So you ran away.
You came up here to be free.
You know, David, in a way, I envy you.
There are times when I feel like I'd just like to live alone with just my thoughts.
[CHUCKLES.]
Nobody around to hassle me.
Mm.
How long have I been here anyway? The kids are really gonna worry about me.
I gotta get back.
I'm all twisted around.
Uh Hey, think you could, uh, show me the way to the road leading down to the relay station? If you can get me that far, I can make it the rest of the way by myself.
Okay? All right.
Okay.
CHIN HO: According to DMV, that's his car.
Homer Wamano? [HONKING.]
Central, this is Officer Kelly.
Request H.
P.
D.
Tries to locate vehicle, license number Chicago-4027.
Last seen at Plum and Vineyard.
Which way? What way? How do you know? I know, I know, I know.
So when his parents decided to move back to the mainland, Tommy and I were faced with a tough decision.
Neither of us could stand the thought of being separated.
Whoops.
Oh, we thought about getting married, but both our parents were against it.
Ha, ha.
I don't know.
I think it had something to do with our ages.
Tommy was only 11 and I was 10.
So he did the only decent thing.
He left without saying goodbye.
But he did leave this little box of Juicy Fruits on my doorstep.
And this little note that said, "From me to you.
" God, it took me nearly a week to get over Tommy.
Of course I had my Barbie dolls to comfort me and somehow I pulled through.
Whoops.
Ha, ha.
Well, you wanted to know about the big love of my life, didn't you? That was it.
That was it, really.
Hey, uh, can we, uh, take a little break here, fearless leader? [KAREN SIGHS.]
I'm still a little dizzy.
Oh.
Uh, we'll call this an injury time-out.
Mm.
I've been thinking about you.
And Well, I mean, I know how you must feel.
Like you've been betrayed, and no one has really understood you.
But do you wanna spend the rest of your life up here? I mean, without any Without any friends or anything? What I'm trying to say is David, is that my father is attorney general, and, well, we could talk to him.
And I'm sure something can be arranged.
Something could be arranged till you find a place to live.
Some people But No, some people that will care for you.
I guess that means the time-out's over.
[SIGHS.]
Okay.
You two.
Stay right there.
What are you doing here? I came with some students from school on a field trip.
Where are they now? I don't know.
L I got separated from them.
I guess they went back.
You're a pretty lady.
What about you? - I'm talking to you.
- He can't answer you.
He's a mute.
He ran away from home a year ago and came up here to live.
What's this? - What's this? - Don't touch that.
That's very special to him.
- Special? - Yeah.
I need something special.
You live in these mountains.
I bet you know them pretty good, don't you? That's fine.
I don't know my way too good.
Must be a hundred thousand cops looking for me by now.
Why aren't you out running instead of standing here rapping with us? Nature Boy here is gonna show me the shortest route across those mountains.
And you're going with us.
The police wouldn't shoot a pretty like you.
Well, what if we don't want to? Hold out your hand.
Hold out your hand! Put them on.
Put them on him.
Come here, David.
Let's go.
Let's go! What are you stopping for? Let's go.
Let's go.
Hold it.
LUCIEN: Keep moving.
[KAREN PANTING.]
LUCIEN: Faster.
Keep moving.
Come on.
- Come on.
- No, wait, wait, wait.
Wait.
Which way? I said which way? If you're leading me in circles, they'll find you buried up here.
If you shoot that gun, the police will hear it.
[GROANS.]
There's lots of ways of dying, pretty girl.
Lots of ways of dying.
[GROANS.]
Looks like H.
P.
D.
Got the right car.
DUKE: We're looking for Homer Wamano.
CHIN HO: Hold it! Stick your hand out.
[YELLS.]
[WAMANO GRUNTS.]
[WAMANO YELLS.]
MAN [OVER RADIO.]
: Search Control to McGarrett.
Search Control to McGarrett.
Over.
Yeah, this is McGarrett.
I just got a radio message for you from Officer Kelly.
- Yes, go ahead, please.
- Message: Steve, have in custody Lucien's accomplice, Homer Wamano.
Meet set for Waipi'o then to boat at Makaha.
Advise, Chin.
End message.
Notify Officer Kelly to hold suspect in custody until further notice.
Thank you.
Waipi'o, eh? Looks like we guessed right.
LUCIEN: Hey, you come back here.
Hey, slow down.
Hey, you come back here.
Slow down.
[KAREN SHRIEKS.]
[KAREN GROANING.]
[SCREAMING.]
That was Karen.
I know it.
What do you think you're doing? Hold it, John.
Hold it.
If that was Karen, at least we know she's still alive.
God knows what that maniac might be doing to her.
John, if you lose your head and go running up there blindly, you could get her killed and yourself.
Now, listen to me.
You go with Danno and we'll hit him from both sides.
Okay, let's go.
Over here.
LUCIEN: Running back there was your idea, wasn't it? You try it again, I'll blow you to a million pieces.
Hold it.
Hold it.
[KAREN PANTING.]
I won't be needing a guide anymore.
I'm home free.
Unlock yours.
Just yours.
Get over there.
Hook yourself to that big limb.
Hook yourself.
Go all the way back there.
Come on.
You can't leave him here like this.
You wouldn't want him looking on, honey, when we get to know each other, would you? Hmm? Thank you.
[LAUGHS.]
[GRUNTING.]
McGarrett.
Hi.
[LAUGHS.]
You wanna see what a shotgun can do up close? Just twitch.
Where are they? Where the hell are they? [GRUNTING.]
LUCIEN: I ain't forgot who it was that put me up here.
I ain't forgot who tracked me like some wild animal.
That was you.
Have you forgotten the six girls that you killed, Lucien? I didn't kill nobody.
You and the rest that pranced through that courtroom, y'all lied.
Tell me you lied.
Tell me you lied.
Nobody lied.
There were eyewitnesses.
- Nobody lied.
- They was wrong.
It must've been somebody that looks like me.
It had to be somebody that looks like me.
- That's not true.
You know that - Shut up, just shut up! I don't wanna talk about it anymore.
I won't talk about it anymore.
[WHIMPERING.]
McGARRETT: I'll make a deal with you.
A trade.
Me for the girl.
There ain't no way.
McGARRETT: Think about it.
Think about it.
All I have to do is push this button.
I could pull every police team off this mountain.
You can be on your way to wherever it is you wanna go.
- I can make you do that anyhow.
- No.
No, you can't, because I'm not gonna call anybody.
Not until the girl is released and safe.
[LUCIEN SOBS.]
What if after she's gone, you change your mind and won't take the cops off the mountain? You still have that gun.
I'll take my chances with the girl.
[LUCIEN CONTINUES SOBBING.]
Hah.
Turn around.
Turn around.
Turn around! [LUCIEN CHUCKLING.]
Go get your gun.
You wanna get it here? You wanna get it there? Go get your gun.
I asked you a question.
Answer me.
Answer me.
Go get your gun.
Go get your gun.
Go get your gun.
Answer me.
Go get it.
Come on, I want an answer.
[GROANING.]
McGARRETT: Get down, get down.
It's only a matter of time before he spots us.
Now, I'm gonna try to draw his fire.
When I do, run down the hill as fast as you can.
Danny? John, you stay here.
There's nothing you can do.
Let us handle it, please.
All right.
John, get back! Daddy! McGARRETT: Karen! Karen, get back! Get back! LUCIEN: All right, freeze.
Hold it right there or you go now.
Let her go, Lucien.
Let her go.
McGarrett.
Come out or I'll kill her right now, I swear it.
Let the girl go and I'll come out.
Let her go.
All right, pretty.
Get Daddy out of there.
Get him out of there.
Karen, quickly.
Move it.
Move it.
[GRUNTING AND GROANING.]
All right, McGarrett.
It's my turn now.
Judgment day is here.
Come up here.
Come up here.
Come on.
[LAUGHING.]
Come on.
A little closer.
That's it.
That's it.
Honey, he didn't He didn't hurt you in any way, did he? No, Daddy.
Your leg, is it bad? I'll be all right.
[SIREN WAILING NEARBY.]
The important thing is that you're safe.
How is it, John? Lt'll be all right.
Steve, I lost my head up there.
I'm sorry.
Next time, leave it to the pros, huh? Okay, fellows.
Have you ever seen this before? KAREN: Yes, it's David's.
David? He lives up there.
Is there anything you wanna tell me about him? Yes.
Okay.
Come on.
