Chapter 6: The Forgotten Lake

[uplifting opening theme music playing]
[car honks]
[sighs] Oh.
Why is this bus so late?
[gasps] Mum, look!
Look at what?
- Hey!
- Huh?
Oh, sorry.
I thought you were someone else.
[gentle sad music playing]
What was that all about?
The man over there looked like Dad,
so I thought maybe
- Oh.
- [bus approaching]
Bus is here.
[music fades]
- Maybe I'll practice before bed.
- [whimpers]
Oh, let me just
[breathes in, blows]
[playing loudly]
What is that racket?
Pan pipes. I brought them back
from Auntie Astrid's.
May I see those?
- Sure.
- Thanks.
[Tontu] Good night.
I see you've kept this
from Aunt Astrid's too.
Well, I made that one.
I never liked these when I was your age.
Aunt Astrid made what seemed
like hundreds of them for me.
She'd slip one in my backpack
or under my pillow.
She even put one in my sock drawer.
That's madness.
A sock drawer is for socks.
Sounds like she was overprotective,
like you are with me.
I'm not overprotective.
Well, not like that.
[Hilda sighs]
If you say so.
Oh, not again.
[car honks]
[tires screech to a halt]
Need a lift?
What's this?
Our new car.
Well, it's not brand-new. It's used,
but the price was right. Get in.
What do you say we celebrate
with a road trip and go camping?
It's finally supposed to be nice out.
Are you feeling all right?
We'll have an adventure.
Just the two of us.
The three of us. [chuckles]
Let's get home then.
We have packing to do.
[engine starts and stops]
I don't remember our old car doing that.
[engine starts and growls]
There we go. Nothing to worry about.
[upbeat adventurous music playing]
[upbeat music playing through car radio]
[radio interference]
Well, we aren't picking up much out here.
Now that we're out of the city,
can I drive for a bit?
But I've driven before.
Please don't remind me.
[sighs] So, where are we camping?
I reserved a spot
at the Tree Spirit Campgrounds.
- I've been there with the Sparrow Scouts.
- Me too. It's great, isn't it?
I guess I thought
we could explore somewhere new.
Well, we're not in a rush
to get to the campgrounds.
If you want to stop and look at something,
we'll stop and take a look.
Hm. I like the sound of that.
[inspirational music playing]
[laughs happily]
[music continues]
[music fades]
This car isn't built for speed.
That's for sure.
- But we're not in a rush, right?
- [engine sputters]
Now what?
[drill whirs]
Wow. I had no idea you were so handy.
You're looking at a Sparrow Scout
who earned her Level 3 Auto Repair badge.
What's this thing?
It's my portable rotating saw.
It's cool, right?
- Very cool!
- [saw roars]
Ooh. Yeah, maybe,
maybe put that back though.
C'mon, boy. Let's see
what there's to see around here.
Don't go too far. I'll have us
back on the road in no time.
Okay. Let's see.
[gentle suspenseful music playing]
[engine starts, roars]
Hilda. I fixed the car. Let's go.
[gentle tense music playing]
- Mum!
- [gasps]
Oh, Hilda, you gave me a scare.
This place is great.
We should just camp here.
We've got a spot booked
at the campground already.
Yeah, I know.
Although, it is getting dark,
and who knows
when that car will break down again.
You mean it?
There's a perfect spot
just a little further in.
Let's get the tent.
I win.
Well, the winner gets to choose
what to do next.
Music time.
You wanna try?
Sure. Why not?
[playing gentle mystic music]
[music continues]
[music fades]
[menacing music plays]
[gentle mystic music ends]
Huh? Mum, that was lovely.
I didn't know you could play like that.
Neither did I.
- [yawns]
- Let's get some rest.
We have a whole day
of exploring ahead of us.
[birds chirping]
I'm glad we stayed here.
Come on. I want to get painting.
Let's find a good spot.
There's a nice path through those trees.
But this one looks more fun,
wouldn't you say?
[Hilda] Hm.
I would say that.
Mum, look. A lake.
This is weird.
What's weird about it?
This looks like the scene I keep painting.
I didn't think it was a real place.
Are you sure you've never been here?
I don't think so,
but I suppose I could've come here
with my parents when I was very young.
Maybe you didn't hold on to the memory
of this place, but it held on to you.
[mysterious music playing]
Are you okay, Mum?
We can go somewhere else if you like.
No, no. We've been wandering around
all day. And it's lovely here.
Hey, boy. What have you got?
Ooh. Where did that come from?
[sighs, gasps]
Look. There's more.
A lot more.
[wind whistling]
[inhales, exhales]
Mum. Look what we found.
I wonder what these things are.
Looks like an old fishing net.
They were probably lures
to help catch the fish somehow.
Well, I don't think
fish appreciate being caught.
But it is a cool souvenir for us.
This tree is much bigger
than I've been painting it.
You paint it. I'll climb it.
Then you might just end up in my painting.
I'm fine with that.
[eerie music plays]
Mum, watch this. [grunts]
I'm watching.
[menacing music plays]
[Hilda grunts] Whoo!
Hey, Mum. Check it out!
[laughs] Be careful on there.

[monster in a guttural voice]
You regret that you freed me?
I'm grateful.
What are you talking about?
I'm also hungry,
and I'll feast
just as soon as I catch the other one.
[Hilda] The other one?
[Hilda grunting]
[monster growls]
[Hilda] Mum, in here! [echoing]
[gasps, grunts] Come on, Twig.
Ow. [sighs]
[exhales] Hilda?
Mum! Are you all right?
Yes. But I can't get through this stuff.
Just hold on,
and I'll get you out of there.
[moans, whimpers]
And you too, boy. I'll be right back.
[Hilda] Be careful.
That thing is after you.

Did you get
the Dangerous Saw Safety badge?
Nope. Never did get that one.

This is all my fault!
That thing said I set it free.
I don't know how.
The charms!
Take the wheel.
[upbeat adventurous music playing]
Mum, what are you doing?!
[tires screeching]
That was amazing.
How did you know what to do?
Mums always know what to do.
- [loud thud]

[whimpers, barks]
- [snorts]
- [whimpers]
[monster roaring]
You're human. [burps]
Too human to eat.
We'll take that as a compliment.
[gentle sad music playing]
I'm surprised you came back to wake me
with that ancient song.
I'm sorry. Have we met before?
I tried to eat you
when you were small.
Smaller than her.
Your parents trapped me
at the bottom of the lake.
Are you sure?
I I don't have any memory of that.
It was you.
And you smell much the same.
[music fades]
But the important thing is
that we taste terrible. Never forget that.
Since you're not food,
we can now be friends.
Good to know. But what are you?
If you don't mind me asking.
I'm from a time
when creatures didn't have to be
so clearly one thing or another.
I have no word for what I am.
I just am.
But I guess you two understand
what that's like.
- [Hilda grunts]
- [Johanna] Ugh.
Nice to meet you!
Speak for yourself.
If that spider frog, or frog spider,
or whatever you wanna call it
Mum, he prefers not to be labeled.
Fine. If that thing is correct,
then my parents made
these charms to protect me.
There's so many of them.
They must have loved you a lot.
[gentle music playing]
I'd like to keep these.
I really hope this is the last time
anyone in this family needs to use them.
I'll never forget
this camping trip with you.
I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
Hm. It's definitely good.
[engine sputtering, roars]
I like our new car.
It's totally unpredictable.
[Johanna] Just so you know, that's not
what most people look for in a car.
