Ice Road Truckers (2007) s04e11 Episode Script

A Rookie's Nightmare

Tonight, on Ice Road Truckers Dragging that [bleep.]
strap Again.
Lisa and hugh do Battle with their loads.
Tell 'em to stuff it up their Ass if they try to blame me for It.
Tensions soar Stupid freaking dumb laugh he's Got.
And ray faces Every truckers' nightmare.
These are the Truckers who make their living On thin ice.
Deep into the ice Road season Trying to make that money.
That's what it's all about.
The battle to be King of the load count That's what it's all about.
Dash for the cash.
Is getting fierce.
Are all fighting to be the New king of the haul road.
At the top of the World in prudhoe bay, alex Debogorski has just delivered His 11th load of the season and Now, he's praying for a Backhaul.
Alex.
Morning.
How you doing, sir? Pretty good, pete.
I don't suppose you'll give Us a backhaul? Is there any? I have no backhaul to give You.
Okay, no problem.
I just thought I'd check since This is a new day.
Very good, sir, thank you.
All right.
We'll see you See you in a day or two.
And we're back on the kamikaze Trail.
Alex heads south With an empty trailer.
It won't bring him any money or Any closer to winning the load Count.
Alex.
I believe you're behind us, Aren't you? Yeah, it's me.
We're pulling two trailers Stacked on top of each other.
Take that back to fairbanks.
Rookie ray veilleux beat alex To the punch.
It's a light load, but it's Better than going home Empty-Handed.
I should get points for Trying.
Stupid freaking dumb laugh he's Got like it's his trademark on The haul road.
Ray didn't particularly have Much of a liking for me there Ever since the beginning of the Season and whatever way I upset Him was something silly.
I don't know exactly what it Was.
I even introduced myself to Alex.
Shook his hand.
Introduced myself.
And he slams me right away with Something.
Gives me the big ol' dumbass Éaugh and then he slams me again With something else and gives me Another dumb laugh.
So I had to freaking walk away From that.
I was like, "all right, I can See how we're gonna play the Game now.
" But with only one Road back to fairbanks, all ray Can do is keep alex in the Rearview mirror.
Go back to canada.
Was I voicing my opinion way too Much there? I don't know.
Hugh "the polar bear" rowland Barrels into the yard to pick up His next load.
Looks like a bunch of heaters To me.
On the oil rigs, These diesel-Powered heaters are Critical for keeping men and Machines operating in weather That can reach 60 below 0.
But for hugh, they're just Another load to be hauled up the Dalton.
Look at that.
Look at them straps.
That don't make sense if they're Strapping a load down to do it Like that.
Oh, that's not on me.
I didn't load the [bleep.]
thing.
Yeah, don't even know where They come from.
They give you that trailer, Let's load it, and away you go.
The position of the Heaters isn't quite right, but With the load count crown on the Line, the polar bear isn't about To let it slow him down.
Well, therein't too many People up there that are happy To see me, but they'll be happy To get the heaters.
I'm always on the attack.
I attack everything I get.
I [bleep.]
attack the hills.
I attack everything.
Back in the yard, Lisa kelly reports to dispatch.
Hey, tim.
Lisa, how we doing? All right.
How are you? Good.
So we got a load for you.
It's a bear cage.
Oh, so is bear cage like "Bear cage" or is "bear cage" Short for something? "Bear cage" is for bear cage.
I've never seen a bear cage Before.
I thought it was just, like, Some cool lingo for something Different.
The bear exclusion Cage is used to fence off Entryways to buildings on the Oil fields and prevent surprise Encounters with bes that can Reach up to nine feet tall and That's the door.
I take it that side goes on the Building.
And then you get toohcome in And out of the arctic-Ness here.
I've never seen anything like This, but it makes sense if They're out on the ice.
You know, you can't have any Permanent structures and then That's where the bears live, so.
Start off Monday morning with no Head.
Oh, wow.
Well, nine-Nine's pretty wide, Actually.
I'm oversized.
Watch out.
In addition to the Oversized cage, tisa's hauling A 25,000-Pound spool of cable.
The unevenly balanced load will Test lisa's skills all the way To prudhoe bay.
I am back on the road going North, which, to me, is the Right direction.
Oh, you like my little tiny Box that hangs over the edge That makes it oversize? I'm always looking for a new Challenge and something new to Learn.
Ray is racing to put some Distance between himself and his Rival.
I could give a [bleep.]
about Alex.
He ought to be praying that he Doesn't kill somebody on the Haul road here.
Earlier this Season Holy mackerel.
Alex plowed into a Row of delineators.
Alex, yeah, that dude's out Of control.
He can't drive a truck.
It's whole different ball game Up here.
Alex may not have A perfect record, but he's got Rookie.
People die out here because They're not particular about What they're doing.
They take too many things for Granted.
Just like this road.
You take it for granted and you Aren't concentrating and then The truck doesn't stay exactly Where you want it on your side Of the road and there's somebody Coming, you're gonna hit 'em.
And otherwise, you could Potentially go in the ditch and Upside down.
Ice cut Copy.
Ray? Did he answer? Ray, do you copy? Prudhoe bay, ray veilleux is in The ditch.
Kendall, kendall, hey.
Kendall, hey.
Hey, we crashed.
We're on top of ice cut.
We went off the road.
I'm in the ditch.
Put my winter gear on.
They always say it's not if you Go in a ditch.
It's when you're gonna go in a Ditch and they're right about That.
I just went in a ditch hard.
[Bleep.]
me.
As a truck begins To skid, inexperienced drivers Will often attempt to Overcorrect and turn out of the Skid in hopes of avoiding the Ditch.
But forcing the wheel against The momentum of the truck could Cause the rig to roll over, Turning a bad situation into a Driver's worst nightmare.
The first person on the scene Is fellow carlile driver Jeremy welton.
Seeing ray unharmed, he snaps A quick photo for the haul road Wall of shame.
At least I didn't flip over.
Smile.
Oh, well, hey, I got a shovel Right there on the back Oh, a shovel? Yeah, right there.
No sympathy, huh? I was gonna throw it out to You, but I'll let you get it Yourself.
Other truckers Continue to arrive And soon they have a plan.
They're gonna try to get us Out.
That'd be really good.
Hell, if we could pull it out, Man, that'd be great.
Ray knows he's Lucky to be alive.
On the dalton, even a momentary Lapse in concentration can be Deadly.
They're a bunch of company Guys here to help and they've All been through this once Before or more.
So I'm gonna let them run the Show.
You're gonna be lead guy.
I never did this [bleep.]
before.
If they can get him Back on the road quickly, ray Might hang on to his job and his Lead in the load count.
We're all hooked up.
We're gonna try tuggin' on you.
So what do you want me to do? Need you to put her in Reverse.
All right.
Start her up, man.
Okay.
Truck started.
That's a good sign and these Guys want to Ray, I'll get you on the Radio in a second.
All right! These guys want to give it a Tug and see what happens.
No.
Ripped that right off.
Watch this.
Boy, that snapped that like Nothing.
Didn't even budge.
Well, they snapped it clean off.
They tried pulling with the Chain and that snapped.
With no quick fix In sight, ray could be stuck for Another day.
You know how rumors go.
He went in the ditch somewhere Around ice cut.
But as word of the Accident spreads down the Dalton, rebuilding his Reputation will take a lot Longer than that.
It had to happen sooner or Later.
You know how bad it is or if He got out? No.
All I know is he went in the Ditch somewhere around ice cut.
Lisa's headed to prudhoe bay With a load that will help Protect workers on the north Slope.
I think he goes, "and a bear Cage," and I said, "a what?" And he's like, "a bear cage.
" Where else do you open your door Slowly to check around and make Sure there's no bears before you Go outside.
Most people don't.
They're just like, "La-Di-Da-Da-Da.
" And I bet it would be different, Like, in the city or other Places, you know, that I Wouldn't even, like, think of, So it's just different.
Life is different.
It's a different mentality up Here.
Bear exclusion Cages have been around since People began working in alaska's North slope.
Since oil exploration began in The 1970s, a dozen people have Been killed by bears in north America.
In recent years, expansion of The oil field, shrinking Habitats, and global warming all Mean human and bear encounters Are on the rise.
It's funny how, like, the new People that come up here, how They don't think the same way I do, and I've been here for And I mean, there are certain Precautions that you take before You do stuff up here, because It's your mentality, and that's How you survive.
Front And I've just been hauling Ass steady here.
Just turning and burning and Hugh's making great Time with his 12th load of the Season.
I call this easy money, Hauling a load like this.
It's a nice, light load that's Got enough weight on there to Give you some traction that you Need.
You don't have to worry about Getting it up the hill.
Been hauling pipe all year long, So it's nice to have a nice, Easy load to come up one day.
I'm behind "philbilly" here, And he's pretty [bleep.]
cautious About everything.
He's pretty heavy, hauling fuel, And I've got a big load, but She's a fairly light one, so I'll probably have to pass him Just to rub his nose in it.
Last year, phil Kromm was hugh's trainer.
Yeah.
I was going too fast.
Yeah, yeah, you bet.
Now hugh decides to Show his old teacher how to run The haul road.
What the hell? I'll stop up here at the Pull-Out.
Back in the yard, Hugh wasn't happy with the way The heaters were strapped down But, in a hurry, he let it Slide.
Now the loose straps are causing Big problems.
Yeah, this dunnage moved a Little bit on the back, but Nothing serious.
It's just, uh, basically so the Tongue don't dig into the bed on The deck.
Hey, phil, how did you manage to See this behind on the back end Of my load? About the time you sacked the [Bleep.]
out of me Hugh and phil Readjust the wooden supports.
Yeah, she's not moving.
The worst of it's over.
Yeah, it'll stay now.
But as hugh gets Ready to hit the road Yeah, it looks like they Parked these two a little close Together here.
I don't know why they would load It like that, but it should Never have been putlike, them Two are loaded right.
They should have left these two That far apart too.
But that's the way she's loaded.
Had to check my load.
Noticed that them two heaters Are, uh, scraping the paint off One another, the way they're Loaded so close.
I don't know why they'd load Them too close like that.
Not my call, anyway.
That's whoever loaded it, I Guess, but it ain't on me Anyway, so I'm not too worried About it.
Next, alex comes to The rescue.
Oh, my god.
Now I've got [bleep.]
alex.
Prudhoe bay He's in there pretty good.
Alex pulls up on Ray's accident.
Heard a little bit of Commotion on the radio and Heard it was ray who was in the Ditch.
Let's go have a look.
Oh, it's [bleep.]
.
Oh, my god.
Now I've got [bleep.]
alex.
That's the way it goes, you Know? The first attempt To tow ray's rig out went Nowhere.
Before they can try again, ray's Got to dig his truck out of the Snow.
It's a lot of snow.
It's like, where do you start? I'm gonna get fired.
I'm used to this.
I've been in the ditch lots.
A good time will be had by all.
At least once a winter, a guy's Got to dig himself out or Somebody else.
I've shoveled myself lots.
I didn't even know it was you When you came pulling up.
You know, I always wondered when This day was gonna come.
When I hung up the mic, I looked Up and I hung it, and I looked Down, and I already caught the Edge, not allowed to go Straight.
After two hours I hope everybody's impressed When the see the hole we dug.
Ray, alex, and the Truckers have shoveled all the Way around the 50-Foot rig.
Like they say, it's not if You go in the ditch, it's when You go in a ditch.
Yeah, they saywhat'd they Say? What did george just say? That's what they say.
That you're either in the Ditch or you're going in the Ditch.
There are two kinds of guys out There.
It's not if, it's when.
But digging around The truck Yeah, one step closer.
A little bit at a time.
Is just the Beginning.
We're only digging around the Outside.
We've got to dig out everything Underneath the tractor.
So the diffs and the engine and Everything's dragging.
It's all packed underneath, see? That's the hard digging.
It's sort of, I guess, Similar to an avalanche.
In a couple of minutes, all that Snow can settle, and it just Itit gets just about as bad as Ice, and it's real hard to get You out of there.
The engine is Especially challenging.
You can't get in there with a Shovel, and it's too risky to Damage stuff.
Little wires and little hoses, And so you've got to do it all With your hands.
That [bleep.]
is frozen in there.
I'm cleaning out the radiator Right now so the fan can spin.
After four Backbreaking hours My snow bank's getting too High for me.
Ray's rig is nearly Free.
I'm really working up a Sweat.
My left foot's a little numb, But I think if I keepkeep Moving, it should either fall Off or thaw out.
This is dalton highway survival.
But for a man with A history of heart problems, Each shovelful comes at a price.
Here you go.
There you go.
Help me out.
Whoa.
I put a coke and a water over There with the ice, if you want Them.
First my hands got cold, And now my toemy foot's cold.
I'm soaking wet.
Once the snow is Cleared, they'll try again to Pull ray's rig and his career From the ditch.
Well, he's gonna pull from Here, using his landing gear off The side and trying to pull it Out.
And he's gonna pull from the Back with it anchored, so Hopefully, between the two of Them, they can get it rolling.
This time, ray will Be hitched to two trucks.
Everybody's gonna pull nice And easy, and we're gonna see What happens, see if she moves.
All right, get in the truck.
Here we go.
All right over there, ray? Yep.
Here we go.
All that took was two trucks, Eight chains, and two hours of Digging.
As the rescue team Departs, alex stays behind to Help remove the last remains of Snow from ray's engine.
Thanks, alex.
You're very welcome.
Appreciate it.
Most work I've done for a Long time.
Yeah, me too.
I don't like shoveling that Much, but I don't like it at all.
I always knew I'd go in a Ditch one day.
Everybody does.
But Well, this is your day.
You picked a nice day to do it.
Yeah, it could have been in a Blower at night.
That's right.
Thank you.
Yeah, you're very welcome.
Good-Bye.
That had to be one of the best Examples of teamwork I ever Seen was a bunch of us that dug Ray's truck out of the ditch, And I was happy I was a part of It just for that reason.
And ray's in a better mood now.
Well, that's another good thing.
Any opportunity that I could Have to, you know, not get Somebody upset or angry at me Or, you know, any opportunity I could take to make amends, I'm Happy to do it.
I mean, whylife's too short For everybody.
Why be, uh, you know, why have People being upset with you? You know, I don't like people Being upset with me.
Yeah, as far as alex goes, I gotta admit, I mean, you know, He cowboyed up.
He got in the ditch with three Or four other carlile guys and He started shoveling.
We were all in there, shoveling Together.
He was a team player right There, and that was pretty good Of him, and I was getting pretty Hard on him there for a while, So I'll let up too.
I mean, he started it, though.
But, you know, I'll let it go, And if he wants to wipe a clean Slate and we can start all over Again, I'm good with that.
Let bygones be bygones and Two hours later Hugh rowland makes It to prudhoe in record time.
Every time I see this yard, That means a load is complete.
Just like money in the bank.
But on the way up, One of the heaters has been Damaged.
I just drop my load, take my Paperwork in there, and they'll Figure it out.
Probably the customer will say, "Well, this one's scratched.
" How's it going, billy? Uh, you're coming right back, Right? Yeah, I'll be back tomorrow.
I look forward to you pulling The same load.
You've got one week left, do You? Yeah, seven more days.
Seven more days.
Then I'm back to the wife.
Sit around the pool with a Pina colada, first couple of Days.
That's right.
Okay, we'll see you Wednesday.
Thanks.
Thank you, have a good trip.
Yep.
Before anyone Checks his load Hugh's headed south With load number 12, but it's Not long before the yard Supervisor notices a problem.
I'm inspecting a load that Hugh brought up, 'cause one of The loader operators brought to My attention that, uh, there's Some damaged freight on there.
Loose.
That one's a little loose.
This chain here, holding it to The trailer should be tight.
You know, thatthat's way Loose.
Great, we got damage.
See, this trailer, due to the Loose chains and the load not Being checked, rubbed into the Exit point to the heater, so now It's rubbed some of the paint Off of one of the doors.
It could have chalked the tires With more dunnage.
It could be a disaster if Something breaks loose, comes Off the trailer.
It might fall onto the road and Hit an oncoming car or I thought hugh was an Experienced trucker.
What hugh didn't do on his way Up the road, my suspicions is, You're supposed to stop every Two hours and check your load.
I don't think he did.
I mean, once he saw that this is So close up here, this isn't Good.
I mean, if the customer wants To, uh, make a claim on the Paint, we're gonna have to pay For it, and in turn, hugh's Gonna have to pay for it.
That's how you do it.
Coming up, ray owns Up to his mistake.
So what do you think, uh, the Bosses are gonna say? And hugh denies making one.
I'll tell 'em to stuff it up Their ass if they're trying to Blame me for it.
Coldfoot, lisa is struggling To keep her bear cage strapped Down.
Looks like I got a tail Dragging there.
Strap 'em up.
Pull over here and tuck it back In, put her back where it Belongs.
Yeah.
Damn.
It cut itself on this right Here.
There was nothing protecting it From rubbing on that bolt and Sawing itself in half, so Yeah, when I had my load lights On, I just noticed the tail end, And I was just gonna tuck it Back in, and then when I walked Back there it was halfway Through, so Well, there's only two straps on It.
There's one in the front, One in the back.
So if I lose the one in the Back, I got one strap holding It.
And it's light enough, but it's Not secure enough.
With one strap Damaged, the oversized cage Could easily be knocked loose And come crashing onto the road.
Just hoping I can throw that High.
I'm debating how to do this.
I have an idea.
I just had a brainstorm.
Why is that so stiff? It's frozen.
All right, that's as tight as That one's going for me.
Okay, it looks like it's good.
We'll see how she holds.
Hopefully it's cushioning it Against the bolt that's putting It in half there.
So I think I'm gonna keep an eye On this load.
Just five miles Down the road The straps keep falling off.
I'm dragging that [bleep.]
strap Again.
I'm dragging that strap again, So I am gonna have to get out And fix it.
It just doesn't want to stay Together.
It's one of those Pain-In-The-Butt loads.
Like, I don't know what I could! Do to make this stuff stay.
I'm about ready to bungee this Thing up.
I hope that holds.
Fighting subzero Temperatures and broken straps, Lisa has no choice but to get Back on the road and hope she Can deliver before disaster Strikes.
Find a place to put this Thing.
R has arrived In coldfoot.
Yeah, I went in the ditch.
I look up and I was like, That's when it sinks in.
Yeah.
"I ain't on the road no More.
" But rumors of his Crash arrived hours before.
You got photos of it? Oh, we got tons of photos.
Guys are driving by with their Cameras.
"Stand there and smile.
" Well, the only reason it's Laughter now is because you Didn't get hurt.
Yeah.
And, you know, the truck's Not hurt, and you're not hurt.
That's the only reason we can Laugh about it now.
Yeah.
Is that that 888? That's the number right There.
Any issues.
No [bleep.]
? Yeah.
That's how you do it, huh? That's how I do it.
Used to you'd call anchorage.
Get anchorage to transfer you.
Ray man's up.
Hi, hey, this is Ray veilleux.
Everybody's fine, everything's Fine.
Just bent the bumper a little Bit and broke a moose light off, And that's about it.
So what do I have to do now? Got to take a u.
A.
When I get In? All right, that ain't a problem.
Oh.
Then I gotta go have a meeting? Really? So that's the new policy? Really? Well, it's not like you're Putting it in the ditch on Purpose, you kno[? Yeah.
Well, I didn't damage the truck Or anything like that.
Didn't even have to get A wrecker.
It didn't cost anything.
All right.
Yeah, bye.
Tomorrow I got to get in there Around noontime or so and take A urinalysis.
And then after that I gotta meet With tim and a couple other Bosses in the office, and They're gonna review my going Off the road.
So who knows what happens with That? Either I get fired or they say, "Well, get used to it 'cause You're gonna go off the road A lot.
" Everybody does, but we'll see What happens tomorrow, you know? I'll deal with it tomorrow.
Back on the road, Lisa kelly is still fighting to Keep her load on the trailer.
What's going on here? Shoot.
Here we go again.
Why does that strap keep coming Loose on me? And falling out? When towing bear cages, you must Stop every 50 feet.
Is this thing moving? Is that what's going on? I think it is moving.
I don't remember it being on This morning like that, do you? Yeah, look how much that slid Off again.
That's how much it's moved.
Now I've figured out why.
It's already kinda being Top-Heavy, you know, 'cause The straps come straight down It and under rather than, like, Out or at angles or anything To hold it.
So it's already so tall and There's so muchit's so long That it's got a lot more play in It, so we want to make sure it's Good.
It's just that it's so light And it's sitting on ice.
It's just sliding everywhere.
Trying to devise something Different.
Lisa's determined To solve the problem and get The load to prudhoe unharmed.
Chains handle more than Straps do.
I could use four chains, Four binders, just run it up Through, back down.
I'm hoping I'm getting it good Enough now that it won't move Anymore.
I don't want to do a half-Assed Job.
I mean, it is 14 below.
But if I can just fix it, Hopefully.
Coming up A showdown in fairbanks.
How fast were you going? I'm guessing probably, like, Early the next Morning, lisa is preparing to Face the toughest hills on the Haul road.
Well, yeah, they're as tight As they go, but the chains Aren't tight, so I gotta back 'Em off and get another link.
If the chains don't Hold, the bear cage could break Free, throwing her load off Balance and sending her truck Into the ditch.
And the bear cage is being A pain in the butt.
I got it chained really good.
I got confidence that it's gonna Hold.
But lisa's struggle With her load can't compare to Ray's bad day.
What's up, alex? Oh, nice, nice.
Dig a big hole there? Well, you probably won't be Able to see the bottom unless You've got a pair of Binoculars.
Yeah, is everybody okay? You're funny.
Have a good one.
Lisa knows what Ray's going through.
She's had her share of rumors And insults.
I understand how hard it is To drive on this road.
He's doing the best as he can To fit in.
He's got a lot to learn.
There's some things he doesn't Know, but he's trying.
Because it's kind of one of Those sticky situations where It's hard to ask for help 'c'c'e People make fun of you, but then If you don't ask for help, then People will make fun of you.
So it's kind of both ways.
Finally, lisa pulls Her load into prudhoe bay.
All season, lisa's been working To gain respect on the haul Road.
This load was nothing but Trouble, and lisa's proved she Was up to the challenge.
Yeah, the chainsthe chains Did good.
They held it down.
That's the waythat's the way It's done.
At the other end of The dalton, hugh rowland's been Called in to answer for his Damaged load.
Hey, boss.
Hugh, how we doing? Not bad.
You? I'm doing okay.
I needed to talk to you about That load of heaters you took Up.
I guess billy talked to you in Prudhoe already? Nope.
Oh.
I guess two of the heaters, They must have moved on the Trailer.
So, you know, they got the Exhaust ports on them.
Yeah, the two on the front, I think it was, they moved, And the one, the exhaust ports Rubbed on the door of the other One.
Scratched it? Eh, yeah, rubbed it pretty Good.
He took some pictures and sent Them up to me.
Well, they were tight.
They were tight all the time.
It's a matter of checking the Load and making sure the chains Stay tight.
Always.
I checked, like, at hilltop.
Alive and good all the way up, So no problem.
It's all better.
Yeah, if you notice something Like that, you know, if you got Any questions before you pull Out of the yard, we can always But, no, it was good.
I mean, it was just from the Trailer flexing.
It can do that.
Yeah.
Yeah, whenever in doubt, we can Fix that before you take off.
Right.
Oh, for sure, yeah.
Okay? Okay, that's all good then.
All right.
Okay, thanks.
Yeah.
Like I said, it's no concern Of mine.
I mean, my load was strapped And tight all the way up there.
It's just too close together A matter of being too close Together and flexing going down The road.
So whoever loaded it, it's on Them, so that's basically what Happens.
Hugh got off easy With dispatch.
But a damaged load is no small Problem.
No, we called on hugh, and he Didn't do it right.
But he chose just to neglect it And go on his way.
It's unacceptable.
And now the Carlile brass will be keeping A close eye on hugh.
Hugh acted like it wasn't A big deal.
It's a huge deal.
Now he's gonna have to pay for That.
Just outside of Town, ray veilleux is headed In to take a drug test.
Well, I'm headed into Fairbanks right now.
And gonna drop off the trailer In the yard.
I got to pee in a cup.
That's the easy part.
And go drop off my paperwork At dispatch and go meet the Bosses.
See what happens.
I'll try to walk out of there With my job, hopefully, so And if I lose my job, then I'll Be knocking at people's doors Looking for a job, So that's the way it goes.
One moment of Distraction could cost him Everything.
Come in.
Hey.
How you doing, man? You need to see me? Uh, yes.
Have a seat.
So sounds like we had an Incident up there, huh? Yep.
Where at? Right on top of ice cut, Mile marker 325.
Coming south? Yep.
What happened? I was heading south, and I Went and called out "ice cut" On the c.
B.
Ice cut southbound.
Put the mic up.
It didn't hook.
Did it again, didn't hook.
So then I was likeI looked up.
