Law & Order: Organized Crime (2021) s03e13 Episode Script

Punch Drunk

In the nation's largest city,
the vicious and violent
members of the underworld
are hunted by the detectives
of the Organized Crime Control Bureau.
These are their stories.
I didn't shoot your partner.
Eamonn Murphy did.
I took this police academy
ring off his finger.
I'm Rika Harold.
You work for the DA's office?
I had a lot of crossover
with your unit in the past,
and now with Eamonn Murphy.
He has basically shot, stabbed,
and stolen his way up to being a boss.
He runs his criminal
operation out of local bars,
using them as drop-offs
for drugs, gambling.
Our job is to get him with the crew.
Try and turn someone.
His number two is Seamus O'Meara.
So you want to use my bar?
You did great work tonight, Jet.
Thank you.
I didn't hate it.
I had a thought about you last night.
You did, did you?
Yeah, I thought, she's
not who she says she is.
You're hiding from me.
What am I hiding?
Who you really are.
Give me your hands.
This dinner with O'Meara is
a pretty big step up for you.
I want to make sure you're ready.
I've gone undercover before
to get info on a mark.
When we've gone undercover
before, it's to make a deal.
This is to cultivate
an emotional relationship.
And if you want him to believe
it, you have to believe it.
And the only way you do that
is by keeping your emotions in check.
You're an artist.
These are the hands
of somebody who creates.
You a painter?
Mostly digital art.
Yeah.
What about you?
What are you hiding from me?
Me?
I don't hide from anyone.
Close your eyes.
Come on. Close your eyes.
This is who I am.
We just need you
to keep O'Meara occupied
until the Morellos show up.
We have our interaction hopefully,
and that will lead Murphy
to our doorstep.
Yo, Chief.
Can we get, uh, two Cape Cods?
Let's get some drinks over here.
What if things get out of hand?
That's what we're counting on.
What's going on?
Whoa. Look at this.
I didn't realize they
let donkeys in here.
Seamus.
It's all right. Don't worry.
Hey, buddy, you want me
to buy you a drink
because I know you probably
can't afford your own.
You know whose bar this is?
Yeah, it's, uh
it's our bar.
Everything all right here?
Yeah, everything's fine.
Just, uh, get your donkey
out of my face.
What the?
You okay? Come sit down.
No. Look, look, look,
I got to go now, all right?
Promise I'm gonna make this up to you.
Where are you going?
Work.
That went pretty well.
- Let's go.
- I'm fine.
Get some ice.
Get some ice.
- My guys did good.
- Mm-hmm.
You looked pretty tough yourself.
Well, they wouldn't be the first idiots
I've thrown out of a bar.
Yeah, I could have
guessed that about you.
So how much time you think the DA
will give him off for this?
Two bozos from the Morello mafia
we busted on a misdemeanor
who did you a favor?
- Mm-hmm.
- It's not my call.
But, uh, if they help you
take down Murphy,
I'm guessing a lesser charge.
I appreciate your help in setting it up.
Oh, it was your idea.
Just glad I could help.
Well, any time I can return the favor
- Oh, there will be a time.
- Mm.
You'll just let me know
if this works out
with Murphy, all right?
Would I be gloating
if I said it already has?
No. Seriously?
Let's just say he'll be
knocking on my door
this afternoon.
Finally.
We're freezing our asses off out here.
There a magic word or something?
Come in.
I like what you did with the place.
I'm not sold on the new name, though.
Jack, stay.
You see that?
Like a statue.
Jack always does what I tell him.
I expect my crew to do the same.
So when Teddy calls
and says you're not
paying tribute this month,
I figure we have a conversation.
All right, Jack, eat up.
Just saved you a trip to the vet.
Take it off your bill.
Or I could add it to yours.
I pay for protection.
Where was it last night when
the Morellos wanted to riot?
You got some balls on you.
Maybe I feed 'em to Jack.
You could try.
You want the kind of protection
that keeps the Morellos
from walking in here,
bring me in as a partner.
I don't want a partner.
I want protection.
50% of the house.
Let's go, Jack.
But I need you
to show your face in here.
Let the neighborhood know
who's in charge.
If you agree to that, we got a deal.
I want the cameras gone.
And I want the names and socials
of everyone in this place,
even the dishwashers.
They'll be on your table tomorrow night.
No.
You'll bring them to me personally,
along with $20k for this opportunity.
Sound fair?
Fair enough. Where do I find you?
Figure it out, tough guy.
Come on, Jack.
That Murphy is not
stepping foot in that bar
until he gets backgrounds on everyone.
You can make that happen?
How thorough do you want them?
Like Cambridge Analytica thorough.
- Mm.
- What's your plan, Stabler?
I'd like to hear from O'Meara
after he left last night.
That would let me know how to proceed.
You're up.
Hey, baby.
I haven't heard from you.
Is everything okay?
I'm good, yeah.
What happened after
you left the bar last night?
Just business.
Are you gonna be at the bar tonight?
I want to see you.
I can't.
Well, where will you be?
I'll come to you.
You don't want to do that.
Yes, I do. I'm worried about you.
Don't be.
Seamus, you're hiding from me.
If you really want me
to see who you are,
you can't shut me out like this.
You know what? You're right, all right?
I'll pick you up at 8:00.
And then you can see what I'm all about.
Turn up Jet's mic.
I want to know what's
happening in there.
You ever been to Santa Fe?
New Mexico?
No.
I went there once when I was a kid.
The mountains there are just crazy.
You know, even the air, it's just
it's different.
If we went there, you could paint.
I could get you a studio.
And we could run it together.
Is that what you want?
What's he doing here?
I didn't know you were coming.
That why you brought your girlfriend?
Nice to see you again.
I like your ring.
Not mine originally,
but I think I wear it well.
Is that a police academy ring?
You're very observant.
That's Jennings' ring. It has to be.
We need to be patient.
Next time, you leave
your girlfriend at home.
Okay, now who is this one?
The man stepping off
the helicopter last night
is James "Goliath" Kenneally,
one of Ireland's great
bareknuckle boxing champs.
What's he doing here?
And why such a grand entrance?
Well, we evidently
miscalculated the level of heat
that's been simmering
between the Morellos
and the Murphy gang,
and our manufactured dispute
has brought them
to the brink of open warfare.
So Murphy, being old-school,
has proposed settling the
dispute the old-fashioned way.
With bareknuckle boxing?
It has been a way to settle disputes
in Murphy's world for a very long time.
And the Morellos are
actually buying into this?
Well, what would you rather have:
two boxers busting each other's
heads open or a body count?
So yeah.
- It's Seamus.
- Go.
Have they decided on a location yet?
We're going to help them decide that.
So you're going to ask Thurman
about extra backup?
Not to push the agenda
and make the night more complicated,
but we got the guy
who bought for Murphy's crew
the other night at Rikers.
Maybe it's a good opportunity
to get Murphy
in the middle of a drug deal.
We're already in the deep end.
You guys try to persuade him.
I'll make a call.
Keep this under the radar.
- Where are you going?
- To set up a boxing match.
Seamus wants to meet.
He's picking me up at 6:00.
Hey, I need you to look at something.
Last night, the ring Murphy was wearing,
did it look like that?
Exactly like that.
Are you sure?
Positive.
Sarge, do you need me to
I need you to stay focused.
- Murphy has Jennings' ring.
- Hello, Ayanna.
The one that was taken from
him the day of the murder.
My UC saw it on Murphy's hand
the other night.
What are you trying to tell me?
I know you've had your doubts
about my motives to pursuing Murphy,
and I'm letting you know
that my instincts were right.
I never questioned your instincts.
It's your judgment I'm worried about.
We're setting up a sting to nail Murphy.
We need extra bodies
just in case it gets ugly.
In my judgment.
Look, I can't give you extra manpower
- You're putting lives at risk.
- You didn't let me finish.
I won't give you extra manpower
when IAB is opening
an investigation into you.
Why is IA
You went to them.
Hmm, you know, it just
never made sense to me
that you turned down this job.
But now, I think
I understand.
You're just like your friend,
Detective Stabler.
You need to do things your own way,
and you knew it wouldn't be
easy to go off the reservation
in a position of such high authority.
Let me tell you something.
I chose to keep my job
because I love my team,
and I trust them
much more than I trust
the politics in this building.
And when it comes to me
solving the murder of my former partner,
no one is gonna stop me.
You want me to buy drugs?
No.
We want you to buy some more drugs.
Same guys as before?
You bought from Murphy's crew.
This time, it's got to
be Murphy himself.
Murphy?
You know the stories about that guy?
About his dog?
I ain't getting anywhere
near that psycho.
Find somebody else.
Guard!
Gustavo.
He's not gonna suspect anything.
It's got to be you.
I want all charges dropped.
- That's up to the DA.
- And us.
If we say we didn't have to beg,
you wanted to serve
the people of New York,
who knows what miracles might happen?
You know, you never told me
what it is you do for a living.
I work.
You sure say that word a lot, don't you?
Yeah.
So what does it mean?
It means I make a living.
I need you to stop the car.
What do you mean "stop the car"?
Just stop the car!
All right, hang on. Hang on. Hang on.
- Is she in trouble?
- She's fine.
She's reeling him in.
I can't do this anymore.
Whoa.
Hey!
Hey, come on. What are you doing?
Hey. Hey.
- What's going on?
- I know what you do.
That guy you beat up at the bar?
He's a Morello.
And I know who Murphy is.
Everyone in this neighborhood does.
What do you want me to say?
The truth.
So this can be what we want it to be.
If I tell you the truth,
I don't want you to leave.
What, are you scared?
I'm more scared that
you won't respect me.
Seamus, I wouldn't be here if
I didn't already respect you.
- Who am I looking at?
- A Morello gang hitman.
Michael Amato.
His brother, Gio, is the one
who we had pick a fight
with O'Meara at the bar.
I think there's a contract out on him.
Who put it out?
Murphy.
Did O'Meara tell you that?
No.
Then what makes you so sure?
How Seamus has been acting.
Please don't force me
to use the expression
"women's intuition".
Well, we could put a tail on O'Meara.
If she's right, and we
get him on attempted,
we have a better chance at flipping him.
He doesn't want to do it.
He doesn't want to do what? The hit?
No, this.
Everything he's a part of.
I see the role he's playing.
I know how this sounds
and I know what you both are thinking,
but a good detective uses
every tool at their disposal,
and I am telling you that what
I feel about Seamus is right.
Okay, if he doesn't do the hit,
how long do you think he's gonna last?
- Let me talk to him.
- Well, with all due respect,
we've already done a lot of talking.
Sarge?
- We got a problem.
- Where's Gustavo?
He got cold feet.
If we don't have a buyer,
we don't have a bust.
That's not our only problem.
Murphy just got here.
And he doesn't know about this.
We didn't have time to call it off.
I know.
You guys get to the back,
and I'll take care of it.
I'm supposed to be meeting someone here.
Where is he?
I, uh I threw him out.
That degenerate got my last
place put under surveillance.
He's just not subtle.
You know, you don't want
that kind of heat in here.
I don't recall you ever
asking me what I want.
I'm trying to make this
the kind of place
where you feel safe doing business.
You know, so that means
I've got to protect
our mutual interests.
We don't have mutual interests yet.
My interests are all that matter.
Let me hear you say it.
Boy.
I think your interests are
all that matter right now,
so I apologize.
And I give you my word,
I'll do everything to make it up to you.
You should certainly try.
What are you gonna do now?
Set up another buy.
With what buyer?
Teddy.
So you are alive.
You don't answer my texts, my calls.
What are you doing here?
You're avoiding me.
I'm not avoiding you.
I have, uh
I have work I need to do.
What work?
Uh
I thought we were gonna
be honest with each other.
Remember?
And you're gonna kill someone?
- Don't ask me that.
- Seamus
Look, you don't know
how this works, all right?
What I have to do, why I have to.
Then tell me.
I have a debt to pay.
I pay the debt, I get out.
If you kill someone for Murphy,
you're not getting out ever.
I don't have a choice.
What about New Mexico?
What about our art gallery?
We can figure all this out.
Just stay with me, please.
You don't know what
you'd be getting yourself into.
I can take care of myself.
You gotta go.
This is your last chance. Go.
Where have you been?
Home.
Getting ready for work.
- Sarge wants to see you.
- Okay.
Jet.
I'm gonna give you one chance
to explain yourself
before I take you off the case.
Explain myself about what?
You had me followed last night?
You were supposed to be
finding out about the hit.
That's all.
He was on his way to do it
when I got there.
I had to stop him.
Find another way.
I didn't sleep with him.
It doesn't matter.
A jury is gonna see those photos,
and they're gonna believe that you did.
Then your testimony is gonna be biased
and this entire case ruined.
So throw them away.
Please, Stabler has done
so much worse than this.
We are not talking
about Detective Stabler.
No, we aren't.
We're talking about me and you.
And you never believed
I was ready for this.
Well, I am,
I have been,
and you need to show me the same respect
you show everyone else in this office.
Oh, the same way you're
showing me respect now?
You're the one who told me to step up,
and that's what I'm doing.
By falling for O'Meara?
I'm not falling for him.
Then why are you still wearing
the necklace he gave you?
I'm taking you off the case
until I can figure out
how to manage this.
That's the end of it.
Giovanni mentioned that you
lost an opportunity recently.
He did, did he?
Look, he can get a little
paranoid with the security,
but that's what makes him
good at his job.
I'd like to make it up to you.
That product you were gonna sell,
let me take that off your hands.
You're gonna buy
$50,000 worth of cocaine?
Yes.
And host your fight at my bar.
I already have a location for the fight.
This dump?
No offense.
It's a nice enough spot for a hangout.
But you want a big crowd?
You want a lot of high rollers?
I can take care of them for you.
I know how to do that.
I want 80% of the profits.
Won't do that.
Good, 'cause if you said yes,
I'd think you were trying
to set me up for something
or even working with the police.
Police?
After what they did to my father?
We'll split the profits 50/50.
You take care of security.
Just so we're clear,
if I find out you're up to anything
other than being generous
See you tomorrow night.
See you tomorrow night.
You took the photos.
Sarge gave the orders.
I had to.
You could have warned me
before I got called into her office.
What good would that have done?
Look, I know it's hard
when you're deep in.
You forget the boundaries, right?
I mean, I've gone through it.
Jet.
You did a good thing.
You may have actually prevented
someone from getting killed,
but Bell's got a job to do too.
She's got to build a case.
You want her to trust you?
Prove to her that you can do your job
and not be a threat to hers.
Okay, I love him.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
How much have you had to drink?
I have not been drinking.
All right. I'm gonna get you some water.
Wait.
Do not throw up on my sofa.
You were right.
I did fall for him.
Seamus is such a wonderful man.
And if you just spent
some time with him
Sit up.
I feel like
he gets me.
He, like, sees me for who I really am.
Do you see me right now?
I see that you're drunk and
you need to drink this water.
Is that really all you see?
Jet
Because that's not me at all right now.
And I'm not in love with Seamus.
What?
- What's going on?
- What's going on
is I came here to show you
that I'm a good actress.
And when it comes to O'Meara,
to doing my job,
I know how to play a part.
I know you think I kissed him
because I liked him,
but the truth is it was
a tactical mistake,
not an emotional one.
Oh, so you admit you made a mistake?
Yes.
And I'm sorry.
I shouldn't have crossed the line.
I just wanted you to be proud of me.
I am proud of you.
What you don't know
is that Eamonn Murphy killed my partner.
It happened years ago,
right when I got out of the academy.
I was around your age, actually.
Jennings was
He was like my mentor.
Anyway, Murphy got this guy,
this career criminal, to take the fall.
But it was Murphy.
I'm so sorry.
The police ring.
That was Jennings'?
Yeah.
Give me one more chance.
I know I don't deserve it,
but I won't let you down this time.
I am so close to turning O'Meara.
You know I can do it.
Let me just try one more time.
Please.
Great crowd, huh?
Listen, you got what you need?
Anything I can get you?
Fine for now. Thank you.
Still nothing from Jet.
Don't worry. She'll be here.
Mm.
That's a Morello.
Jamie, we just had
the head of the Morello
crime family walk in.
You got eyes on Teddy?
He's ready.
- Fighters, ready?
- Oh, yeah.
Let's fight!
That's it.
Okay, send him in.
Teddy's on the move.
Use that jab like I told you. Come on.
Got that money for those souvenirs.
When the fight's over.
Sure. Just wanted you to know.
- That's it!
- Come on!
- Keep that elbow in.
- Come on!
- Good. Good.
- That's it.
What is it?
- Is that
- Michael Amato.
Eamonn Murphy!
Gotta go. Come on.
Come on!
Come on! Hurry up!
All right. Get in the car.
What is going on?
Juliet, get in the damn car
or he's gonna kill you too!
Seamus, what the hell is going on?
All right. That guy back there, right?
That was Michael Amato.
The one Murphy hired you to kill?
I-I thought you were gonna pay him off
and tell him to get lost
so you didn't have to.
I did. I did, and that dumb son of a
Now Eamonn's gonna kill him,
and me, and you,
just to prove a point.
Baby, I'm so sorry. I didn't
mean for this to happen.
I was trying to do the right thing.
Hey. Hey.
You did do the right thing.
You did.
All right, we got to go. Come on.
Wait!
Drop the gun. Get on the ground.
- What?
- My name isn't Juliet.
It's Detective Jet Slootmaekers,
Organized Crime Task Force.
What?
You're not really a cop. Come on.
Drop the gun.
- Drop it!
- All right.
All right.
Hands on your head.
I can't believe you're doing this.
You told me to be honest with you.
I-I was.
All right?
You said you were gonna be honest too.
I was just falling for you.
You were falling for me, weren't you?
Or was that all a lie too?
Jet, where are you? What's going on?
Stop!
No!
Jet, are you there? Hello?
