Lightfields (2013) s01e05 Episode Script

Episode 5

1 Your mother and me have decided it's time for a change.
She's talked to her cousin in Lincolnshire.
A vacant farm waiting for a tenant.
And I spoke to the owner here.
He understands.
So as soon as we can pack, we can go.
Put the past behind us.
We'll miss you.
I'll miss you.
Thank you.
For all you've done.
Luke? - Seen Luke? - No.
Luke? Paul must have taken him.
- He wouldn't.
- Oh, he would.
He could have sneaked in in the night and taken him.
Just give him a call.
- Luke's disappeared.
Paul abducted him.
- We don't know that, Barry.
- He's not picking up.
He wouldn't.
- Calm down.
Yeah, it's Barry.
Call me.
OK, I'm coming.
Ready or not.
Are you in here, Luke? - What are you doing there? - Hiding.
From her.
She was there on the landing.
And she scared me, so I ran.
Oh, Luke.
She's behind you.
Leave him alone! Ah, you found him.
Luke, are you all right? What are you doing in here? Sweetheart, we didn't know where you were.
Let's get you some breakfast.
Who are you shouting at? Oh, Dad.
Your sister died.
Mm.
But she's still here.
I'm going to call Dad and get him to come and pick you up.
What? I'm going to stay but I don't think this is the place for you.
If you're staying, I'm staying.
Right.
We'll both go.
Are you sure? Yeah, you're right.
Oh, I don't know what I was thinking.
Enough is enough, yeah.
Mm.
Well, you don't need to call Dad.
We could just drive back.
Can't we? Oh, I don't feel safe driving all that way.
Right, yeah.
OK.
- I'll see you in a bit, yeah? - Mm-hm.
- Where are you going again? - Lincolnshire.
Do you know Morse Code? We could use it to communicate.
Across the country.
Across the world.
Like spies.
(Taps in Morse Code) So how are the sleeping pills working? Yeah, really good, thanks.
How can I help? It's a bit embarrassing and I feel a complete idiot.
Don't feel an idiot.
I am here to hear your ailments whatever they may be.
I need some more.
Really? You should have plenty.
No, yeah, there were but last night I was taking them at the kitchen sink and I dropped the bottle with the cap off and they all fell in the water and they - Butter fingers.
- (Laughs) All right, let's prescribe some more.
- Did you have any side effects? - No.
- Headaches? - No.
Hallucinations? No.
Hold on tight this time.
(Laughs) Yeah.
Lorna's put a story CD on for him.
Hardly ate his breakfast.
This is not good for him, Dad.
It's not good for me, or Lorna.
We're already stressed enough with all the custody stuff.
So can you please stop talking to her about ghosts? We are not making this up, Barry.
Luke is seeing her.
He thinks he is.
He's not.
He can't be.
Ghosts don't exist.
Oh, come on, Lorna.
Don't do this.
Don't lose it.
People die.
Daughters die.
They don't come back.
This isn't like Tricia, Barry.
Tricia said goodbye.
We said goodbye to her.
Your sister has some sort of unfinished business.
It wasn't until you came to stay that Luke started to see her.
She may be using him to get to me.
OK, let's just say I go along with all this.
But she can't hurt Luke, can she? Lighting matches in his bedroom.
Disappearing from the car.
A fire in the shelter.
I think she wants revenge.
John Mullen in Planning, please.
- Hello? - Hey, it's me.
- Hi, are you OK? - Yeah, I'm fine.
- Clare all right? - Yeah, Clare's fine too.
Don't worry.
But I think you should come and pick her up.
- Really? OK, when, today? - Yeah.
Today.
That'd be great.
- Are you coming too? - No, no, no.
- Just her.
I'm going to stay.
- Look, Viv, I think that All right, we'll talk about it when you get here.
Yeah.
- (Pips) - Got to go.
No more money.
Bye.
Mr Felwood? - Sir? - Can I help you? I, uh I wanted to speak with you, sir.
About your daughter.
Pip.
Run along now.
Who's that? Maybe I should have come to see you sooner, sir.
I was afraid to.
But it's my duty.
As I was the last person to see your daughter alive.
You are right to be afraid.
Yes, sir.
I wanted to say how sorry I am that my meeting with her that evening led That my meeting led to her death.
I wish I hadn't left her there.
I wish I could have I don't know.
walked her home.
- We did it.
- We did.
- Are you OK? - Think you'll marry an English girl? Let me level with you now.
Don't get any ideas about me.
I'm a long way from home.
A long way.
OK? And back home, I have a life.
I have a wife.
(Crash) It's an American airman.
Why did Pip become a fireman? To save people's lives.
Yeah, OK, maybe because his sister died in a fire and he couldn't save her.
And why is Lucy so angry with him? We don't know she is.
That's what Dad says.
Exactly.
That's what he feels.
He feels guilty.
People do feel guilty.
A friend dies in a car crash, you survive.
Your sister dies, you don't.
Survivor's guilt.
I think it's more than that.
You think he started the fire? I think that's why he can never speak about her.
That's why she wants revenge.
Jesus, Lorna, that's crazy.
What can we do? Dad? If you want to tell us more, about the fire, about what happened, then maybe it'd be good to get it off your chest.
And then maybe this haunting, whatever it is, well, maybe it'll stop.
Think about it.
I will.
Dad's going to come and get us this afternoon.
Right.
I have to go and tell Nick.
Of course you do.
Will you be all right? Yeah.
I'm going to start packing.
See you later.
I love you.
We'll be leaving the day after tomorrow.
So your mother can have you back.
Oh, I should have said Yesterday, Harry didn't come to tell us about the letter.
He was here to see you.
Really? To tell you his call-up's come.
He's leaving.
I've got to go.
My dad's coming today and we're going to leave.
Today? Yeah, I know it's a shock.
Yeah, it is a shock.
I thought you said you were staying till the end of August.
Yeah, but my mum's Everything's gotten so I don't really want to go.
Back to where it's at.
- What do you mean? - London.
Where it's all happening.
I'm sorry.
You're going to be hard to forget.
Wait a second.
Nick.
Are you free? I'm sorry I got so upset about the letter.
I was confused.
And you didn't want me to see it.
I didn't want you to see how horrible I was.
I wish you were horrible.
It would make things simpler.
Why? Then I wouldn't be feeling like I'm betraying her.
- You're not betraying her.
- I feel I am.
- By being with you.
- But we're just talking.
And anyway, she'd let you go.
Now I'm leaving tomorrow and it's too late.
I wish the summer were just starting now.
I wish we had it all to come.
It wasn't Dwight.
Albert saw him leave the barn.
- It was an accident.
- Yes.
(Twig snaps) I'm leaving tomorrow.
Lots to do.
I hope to see you.
Before I go.
(Runs water) A life for a life.
(Music plays on tape recorder) (Music stops) Coming, ready or not.
Mum What? Nothing.
Lorna! You must tell us if she comes again.
OK.
Hey! I'm going to miss you.
Mr P-l-P.
I'll miss you too, Miss E-V-E.
You'll make good new friends where you're going.
And you can form a secret club with them.
Even if their names don't spell the same backwards like ours.
Some secrets you can never tell, though.
Even in a secret club.
Do you have a secret like that? You er wanted to see a photograph of Lightfields when I was a child.
- Oh! - Oh! That's her.
That's Lucy.
- Yeah.
- (Vehicle approaching) Oh, shit! That must be the woman who booked yesterday.
Thank you.
(Engine starts) - Hello.
- Hello.
- Welcome to Lightfields.
- Thank you.
Come on in.
"When I was a child, I thought as a child, spoke as a child.
Though now we see through a glass darkly.
But then face to face" Sorry, we're a bit of a (Laughs) You rang yesterday? Spoke to my wife? - Yes.
- Oh, that's my grandson's room.
That's my father's room, and, you, well, you're through here.
Oh Hey.
It's me.
It's Daddy.
You know what we're gonna do? Escape! Come on.
Where are we going, Dad? If If I confess, then maybe she'll stop.
We were only trying to help her.
Me and Vivien.
I I didn't mean to I didn't mean to do her any harm.
I didn't mean to.
(Gasps) Jesus! - Good God! - Barry! Oh! Barry! Barry! - What the hell's happening? - Oh, my God! Where's Luke? Garden.
He's gone.
(Panting) - Feel like a POW? - Yeah.
- Yeah? - What's a POW? Prisoner of war.
I'm sorry.
Have you seen a little boy? My grandson.
- No, I'm sorry.
- Lukey, don't hide.
Sorry.
Sorry.
Mum! Mum! Mum? Mum? No.
(Knocking on door) - You've dropped - I don't know where my mum is.
She's She's taken pills.
She's trying to kill herself.
Listen to me.
Listen to me.
You know the nearest phone box? You run to it.
You ring 999 for an ambulance.
Go on.
I'll find her.
- Luke! - Lukey! Luke! - Lukey, darling! - Luke! - Luke! - Lorna? Yeah? What? - It's Dad.
- What? - He must have seen something.
- I know.
Let's go 100 again.
100.
No, mate, we'll top that - we'll top it.
110.
In you get.
I don't want to go.
- You don't want to go? - With you.
I'm your dad.
You'll do what I say.
(Panting) Lucy.
Lucy! (Fire crackling) (Coughing) Help me.
Help me.
(Coughs) All things bright and beautiful All things bright and All things All things bright and All things (Gasps) I was there.
I saw you die.
(Sobs) And I killed you! No! No! (Sobs) Stay awake.
Stay awake! I just want to get away from everything.
And everyone.
Take you with me and start again.
(Engine starts) - Hello? TOM: Upstairs.
She's here.
She's been sick.
Mum? I'm sorry.
(Exhales heavily) - Cheers.
- Proud of yourself? - Barry.
- Where were you gonna go? - I don't know.
- Oh! - Anywhere.
- Brilliant.
- Barry! - "Barry"? Oh, er, do you want some sugar? Piece of cake? Make yourself at home.
Jesus! LUKE: Don't! - He stole our boy! I'm not your boy, not just yours.
So you've got to share.
I'm sorry I scared you, Luke.
I'm sorry I scared you all.
I scared myself.
I thought I saw this girl in the middle of the road and I slammed on the brakes.
- Girl? - Appeared, out of nowhere.
That'll just be the drink, Paul.
Luke's right.
We've all been too possessive.
Let's not fight over him.
Let's work it out.
Dad, do you want to come see my room? Good idea.
Show him.
He saw Lucy.
- She was stopping them getting away.
- No! She was trying to make them crash - to hurt Luke.
To take her revenge.
I'm sorry to disturb you.
My daughter Clare forwarded me your email.
I'm Vivien Mullen - Vivien Travis I used to be.
Pip? Viv? You know each other? As soon as I saw your email saying Pip was here I knew I had to come and stay again.
You never stayed here, that was Eve.
I rented this house one summer in the '70s.
Tom was still around.
- Do you remember Tom? - I remember everyone.
We never talked about night, did we? No.
We never did.
We were playing hide and seek.
Eight, nine, ten, - 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.
PIP: I hid in the den.
Coming, ready or not! I heard voices coming from the barn.
ALBERT: What have you done? - (Sniffling) No How could you? LUC Y: Forgive me.
- No.
I'm 17, I'm not some little girl.
- Don't come home.
- What do you mean? I don't want to see you ever again.
- Daddy, I'm so sorry.
- You are not my daughter.
(Barn door closes) What are you doing? (Sniffles) - Lucy? - Go away.
Leave me alone! (Sobs) Meet you back here.
PIP: I got some food.
And some milk, and a paraffin lamp, and came back.
I lit the lamp so she wouldn't wake up in the dark.
So, you see, it was my fault.
The lamp must have fallen over, or maybe she knocked it over in her sleep.
That's how the fire started.
That's why she died.
That's why she blames me, why she's still here.
Haunting Luke and haunting me.
- No.
- She wants her revenge.
No, she doesn't.
Believe me, she doesn't.
Your lamp had gone out before the blaze began.
Tom was there.
How did you know where to find me? I guessed.
Because you were there.
I saw you.
I'd gone back to the village to find Eve, but couldn't.
So, I came back to the barn to meet Pip.
It was almost dark.
And as I came to the barn I saw you.
(Fire crackling) And then the barn started burning.
I didn't start the fire.
She wanted me to remember.
It was you.
(Inhales sharply) I didn't mean to.
I was on my way home when I saw Lucy go into the barn.
I had to look.
(Chatter) Why did I go back? It hurt to, but I couldn't help it.
They'd gone.
They'd left it dark and empty.
That's how I felt.
Not even jealous, just lonely.
I didn't know she was there.
If I'd known she was in there I'd never have done it.
If I'd known she was in there I'd have gone through the flames to save her.
I wish I could have.
ALBERT: Lucy! Lucy! (Screams) Lucy! Lucy! Keep away! MARTHA: No! (Wails) No! - Oh, God! - She's gone.
- She's gone.
- (Sobbing) MARTHA: Oh, God! But by then it was too late.
Couldn't admit it.
Couldn't admit I killed her.
And every day since I've been - I've been in hell.
- 30 years.
- You've served your time.
- Huh.
So have you, Mum.
(Gasps) All my life I thought it was my fault.
- And it wasn't.
- No.
She was trying to get your attention, going through Luke.
- To let you know.
- The truth.
(Laughs) (Birdsong) - Have a good journey tomorrow.
- Yes.
I'll write to you.
And you write to me in London.
Promise? Promise.
Look after each other.
We will.
What time do you leave? Six.
So we've got 11 hours.
- What shall we do? - (Both chuckle) That goes - Got it? - Yeah.
Careful.
You're supposed to be taking it easy.
(Pop song on car radio) - OK.
- Thanks.
- OK? - Yes.
(Engine starts) NICK: Hey, wait.
- Write to me.
- Yeah.
Luke must have reminded Lucy of you.
Mm.
What about Eve and Harry? What happened to them? He went away to war, never came back.
And Eve? Is she still alive? No.
When I think of her now, she's the same as when you knew her.
18 again.
Mm.
Still some warmth in the sun.
LUCY: Don't go walking down Lover's Lane With anyone else but me Anyone else but me Anyone else but me
