Losing It With Jillian (2010) s01e08 Episode Script

Alvarez

- Tonight on losing it - Don't eat that.
- There are some serious, dangerous problems Going on in your family.
- Pull! - Your airways close, So you have minutes of suffocation Throughout the night.
- Oh, man.
- Your son is following his dad's lead.
I can't do it.
I can't.
- What the hell is with your family? - She's doing everything that you're not.
It's not a joke, David.
Does it look like a joke? - Huh huh! Hyah! - I am going to make it happen? - Come on! - Aah! - Aah! - Come on out! - I'm learnin' to live livin' to learn startin' to sing my song right or wrong learning to live - America, this week, I'm in Miami lakes, Florida, And I'm about to move in with the Alvarez family.
Dad, David Sr.
, Mom, Carmen, Their daughter, Melissa, And son, little David.
- I'm David Jr.
, and this is my house.
- We're all here pigging out.
We've got rice and pork With fried plantains.
- As a family, we eat really bad.
This is a good one.
- I want more! - I think it's because of our Latin culture.
We're used to eating everything fried Or stuck or battered in some type of grease, So it's not very good for us, And we are just used to it.
- You're gonna make me eat healthy.
- Yeah, right.
Don't eat that.
- We just haven't understood Like how serious it really is.
- There you go.
- Carmen is extremely worried about little David, Because he's already testing his blood sugar At ten years old, due to pre-diabetes.
- If I keep gaining weight, I will get diabetes.
- As a parent, it makes me feel bad That my son has been laughed at at school Because of his weight.
- Big David is in denial.
He thinks that he's fine, That it's not detrimental to his health.
He could have a heart attack, he could have a stroke, And he needs to stop.
Kids learn by example, And for David's sake, I wish he would realize it And change.
- I really want Jillian to help me lose weight, Because I don't want to do this.
I want to throw this away.
- We need to do something about it now Before he becomes diabetic.
This is something that has me so scared.
Half of our family has suffered from something Related to diabetes.
I want to stop it now.
Please, Jillian, come help us.
- There's a lot that we found out about your family, And we are here to help, Because there's some real trouble And problem areas that have to be addressed.
So, Carmen, I'm gonna start with you.
So there's an ideal weight that we come up with.
And for you, the ideal weight we look at is 109.
Let's look at what your actual weight is.
Are you surprised about those numbers? - Yeah, 'cause I thought I was doing something about it.
I guess it's not enough.
- But we're gonna go to David Sr.
We also have an ideal estimated weight, And that should be at about 180.
Let's take a look at where your weight actually is.
One of the things, David, because of your weight Is something called the obstructive sleep apnea, And it's because of being overweight That your airways close, And that means you literally Have seconds and minutes of suffocation, if you will, Throughout the night, And before you work out, we're making recommendations That you actually have a full sleep study Until we solve this, okay? Unless you guys have questions, Do you mind stepping out just for a moment While I talk to your folks? - Bye.
- The last thing we need to do is scare him.
When we look at his fasting Insulin numbers, They are three times normal, just like dad's.
If he were to gain weight, We can actually show you a picture Of what he may look like at his High School graduation.
That's horrible.
I don't want that for him at all.
- He's following his dad's lead.
But it can be changed.
It must be changed.
- Hello.
- Hi, who's this? - Carmen.
- Hi, Carmen.
It's Jillian.
- Jillian who? - Are you serious? "Jillian who?" I'm outside.
- Oh, my God.
I can't believe you're here.
There she was.
It was Jillian, Coming here to help us out.
It was incredible.
- Hi there.
- How are you? - Jillian.
Nice to meet you.
- David.
How are you? Same here.
- I'm like, "oh, my gosh, David, you're dreaming.
" She's gonna kill me.
- So normally, it doesn't go quite like this.
We would normally meet at a fitness location And have our first family workout, But you need to have a sleep apnea test Immediately, And you're not cleared for exercise until you have it.
- He had his sleep apnea test a couple of years ago.
They came and they delivered the machine, And he threw it out.
He didn't want to see himself that way, So he just ignores it.
He could literally die in his sleep.
- So talk to me.
What am I - We - yeah.
- We started this whole process Basically for little David.
In January, we started going to an endocrinologist, And they thought that he was beginning to become diabetic.
- Nine? - Mm-hmm.
- He turns ten this week.
- How do you think a nine-year-old Becomes pre-diabetic? - By the things that he's eating.
- And at nine years old, is he buying that food himself? What about physical activity? - Mmm, not much activity.
I take them sometimes to the park to play tennis.
- Which is called Chase ball for us.
- Why is it called Chase ball? - We never hit it.
- They don't know how to play.
- But it's good.
At least they're running.
They're doing something.
- So we have a long week ahead of us.
Will you show me my room? Let's get this show on the road.
- We're gonna put you in the r.
V.
Outside.
- Show me the r.
V.
So tell me, what do we have an r.
V.
For? - Well, this is sort of like my - Doughnut runs.
- Sort of like my hobby.
- Doughnut runs? I don't believe you.
- Go with us and have a doughnut.
- No, I don't believe I don't believe you'll be having a doughnut In the next five days.
This is my r.
V.
Now, And as long as I'm staying in this thing, The late-night doughnut runs are over.
I want to see, uh, Chase ball.
- And Chase ball begins.
- Aw! I got it.
Ow! Oh! Ooh! I swallowed a bug.
I'm gonna take a break.
- So why do you think you've gotten to the point Where it's like, you know, you have me living in your house? That's kind of an extreme situation.
- His diabetic thing.
It'll slowly eat you up.
- For him to get it together - Mm-hmm.
- You have to.
- You know, I made the mistake.
I've gained the weight.
I gotta lose it.
- Because we can't get you in the mix at the moment, You're stuck on the sidelines, and - I'll enjoy it for today.
- Don't enjoy it.
I want you to hate it.
And while you hate it, I want you to sit here and worry.
- Okay.
- David Sr.
Is looking a little too content Sitting on the sidelines doing nothing.
As soon as this guy gets cleared to work out, I am going to crush him.
- Ah, good.
Packing I see.
David Jr.
Needs a role model.
Clearly, he's following in his father's footsteps.
And since David Sr.
Can't work out Until he has his sleep apnea test, I'm gonna personally drive him there myself To make sure it gets done right this time.
So what do you think we're gonna find out tonight? - That I have sleep apnea.
- How many times do you think You stop breathing in an hour? - Four to five times.
- I think 20 times.
All right.
Try to relax.
It's gonna be all right.
It's the end of my first day here.
This day is pretty much a disaster.
It's not the first time for this guy.
He's already had a sleep apnea test.
He didn't use the machine.
I don't know if he's gonna get cleared to work out, And if he can't work out, I don't think I'm gonna be able to get through to him.
And if I can't get through to him, This is a waste.
A mess.
- Coming up on losing it - Oh, man.
- See where I am, David? It's not a joke, David.
- Man, she's pissed.
- He thinks I'm a character on TV.
- You ready for the results? It's some of the highest numbers I've seen.
- I'm about to begin my second day here.
I'm gonna go pick up David Sr.
From his sleep apnea test.
These test results today are gonna determine How the entire week is gonna go.
I'm hoping for the best right now, 'cause I don't know what else to do.
- So we got some news hot off the press.
You ready for the results? - Yes.
- Okay, there's an index we look at.
A normal number is between zero and five.
Severe is over 30.
Do you have an idea what yours is? - No.
- 64.
It's some of the highest numbers I've seen.
The longest you went with no breathing at all Was 32 seconds.
You might as well be underwater and drowning and dying.
We're in so much trouble That you are gonna immediately as of tonight Have to start using the breathing mask.
Now, Jillian, you're not gonna like this part - Oh, come on.
- Because the exercise workout Is gonna be limited to a heart rate Of no more than 140 beats per minute.
So that's very moderate to mild exercise.
- All right, fine - It's very rare when physicians Advise that you keep a heart rate down.
- You know, your mental resolve has to be that much more, Because your rock bottom moment Is not gonna happen in the gym, So I hope to God it's happening right here.
I hope to God you're really seriously hearing this.
I have to literally, you know, Treat you with kid gloves, Which I'm sure thrills you, But in the long run, it's not good for you.
- It doesn't thrill me.
- I'm shocked, and I'm irritated.
This guy threw out his sleep apnea machine A few years back, And, obviously, it's only gotten much worse since then! It's overwhelmingly selfish of him.
- What, uh What do you see? - All right, keep walking, buddy.
We're right here.
Come here.
- Well, we come to the gym, Because that's what I had planned, And obviously Sandy's gonna be all over this, Monitoring Dave and seeing how he's doing.
- 120 already, so we've gotta really just keep him at 3.
0.
- At zero incline? - Zero.
So pretty much what you see right here Is where we're gonna be right for the whole workout.
- Okay.
David Sr.
Needs these workouts more than anyone, But Carmen is not off the hook here.
So she's gonna do her work in the gym, And I'm hoping that that will light a fire under David Sr.
- Oh, man.
- You see where I am, David? - I can't even look back, honestly.
- Where am I? - Behind Carmen.
- I'm behind Carmen.
Where are you? - Oh, behind Carmen.
- No, dude, you're not behind Carmen.
You know why? Because I'm behind Carmen.
It's not a joke, David.
Does it look like a joke? I've already started to unleash on this guy.
He doesn't care about me.
He thinks I'm a character on TV.
Without the ability to beat the crap out of him, He just thinks it's the funniest thing in the world.
Relax your neck.
Eight.
Seven.
- Heart rate's at 140.
Back on in five seconds.
- Pull! Pull! Way up! - Harder.
Unh! Come on, go.
Unh! That's it.
go.
Lift! You gotta fight, Carmen.
Stay up, stay up, stay up, stay up.
Good.
Back up tall.
Do you hear Carmen screaming? - You're screaming? - She's doing everything that you're not.
- That makes me feel bad enough.
- You don't look like you feel bad.
- I'm trying to get there.
I will get there.
Oh, she's pissed.
pop it.
Pop it.
What? What the hell is with your family? They said your husband, you know, he's dying, He doesn't say a word.
And you get all this information And still don't talk.
What is it? What? - I'm mad.
I'm mad at him.
- Have you told him that? - Maybe not in so many words, but I have.
- If you're not able to talk about it, Things are not gonna get better.
- It's a losing battle.
You're a nag, and you get the blame.
- Have you said, "I am furious with you"? - No, I haven't.
- "you're killing yourself.
" - I haven't told him.
- "and you're killing our son.
" - I haven't told him.
- Okay, well, I think maybe That's one piece of this equation that's missing.
This workout's really frustrating me.
David's like barely walking on that treadmill, And then Carmen is now terrified To verbalize her frustration, Because her whole family jumps on her about being a nag.
The dynamic in this family has to change.
Tonight, the grandparents and the rest of the family Are coming over, And I get to see what these guys are eating firsthand.
- This is the grandmother.
- Nice to meet you.
- Jillian.
- Hi there.
- This is the grandfather.
- Hi.
- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
Re-educating the grandparents about this Looks like it's going to be a challenge.
So that's all oil.
- No, that's not oil.
That's, um, like a syrup.
Like a syrup on top.
- So it's fried bread With syrup and sugar.
Oh, my God, I'm looking at what these guys are eating, And it's like they've got An extremely fatty cut of pork, The white rice is dripping in loads of salt, And the yucca is saturated In heaps of oil.
What is that? - That's the skin.
I'll take it I'll take it off.
- It doesn't get worse than this.
I have a question for you.
Abuela started family night? - Family is everything to us.
- Family is everything to you.
- Yeah.
- So talk to me about how you would feel If you had to bury your son.
And I'm asking you this Because this is a reality that you're facing.
This one has is pre-diabetic.
He could lose his sight before he's 30.
He could lose limbs.
- That's what we eat for a long time.
- But look what it's doing.
Type ii diabetes Happens because the food you're eating is poison.
You guys say the family is everything to you, And you mean it.
But right now, you're in a situation Where you're running the risk of losing Members of your family.
- What can we do? - You can change.
I mean, he's turning ten on Sunday, right? I think that what we should do Is do this whole thing over on Sunday, And do it in a way that's as healthy As can possibly be.
- Well, we got to get it going, we'll get it going.
- Okay, well, you can go be the first person To grab the trash bag then right now.
- Right now? - Now! - What do you want to get rid of? - Beans we can keep, this we can work around, But take the croutons off of there.
This goes.
This is diabetes.
What do you want to do with it? - Throw it away! - You throw it away.
- Aah! - Good.
All right, trash bags.
Here's your peanut butter.
Hydrogenated trans-fats, heart disease.
Gone.
Oh, hydrogenated lard.
No.
Monosodium glutamate, no.
The mustard.
No, no, no.
- Just like tore up the house.
It was like a hurricane.
There was like seven trash bags worth of stuff outside.
- What we gonna eat tonight? - You can have beans and salad right now.
- Beans and salad? - Yep.
Things are moving in the right direction, But at a glacial pace.
I threw the food away.
Will it stay gone? Who knows? David Sr.
Got his sleep apnea mask.
Will he use it? Who knows? Tomorrow, I'm gonna continue to push Carmen, Because if she can't step up and take a leadership role here, That's it.
It's game over.
Coming up on losing it - I don't hear anything.
I just see you suffering And whimpering.
what are you going to do To get me across the room? What do you guys think? You want to see 'em? Yeah! - That's the menu.
Relax your hands.
I have to find a way to get through to Carmen today.
I'm gonna give Carmen a really aggressive workout, So she's willing to confront David Sr.
And do whatever it takes to save her nine-year-old.
- Three.
Really good.
Two more.
Six.
Good job.
Five.
There you go! Good.
Run.
Ten.
- Three.
- Pull it towards you.
Pull! Pull! Up! Down! One more.
- Uh! - Come here.
Pull me across this gym.
Let's go.
I'm David right now.
What do you want to say? - I want to do this thing.
- No, we're not.
What are you gonna say? You want to give up? - No.
- How are you gonna get me across this room? Carmen's 50% of the parenting force In this household.
It's like, lady, put up or shut up.
Don't sit there and beg your husband To take control of it.
You take control of it.
what are you going to do To get me across the room? - Use my voice.
- Let me hear it! I don't hear your voice! I don't hear anything.
I just see you suffering And whimpering.
Say it! - Aah! - I need to hear something from you.
Come on, Carmen.
What the hell are you gonna say to him? - You have to do this.
You're killing David, You're killing us, and you're killing our family.
- Try again.
Why don't you use that strength? Why? - Because it's easier to give up Than to try sometimes.
- Don't try.
Do.
Command it.
- I want to do it.
- Make it happen.
- I'm gonna make it happen.
- I am going - I am going - To make it happen! - To make it happen.
- Louder! - I am going to make it happen! - Look me in the eye and say it again.
- I am going to make it happen! - Then make it happen.
Use your voice and get me across this floor.
- Unh! - What does it mean to you? - Everything! - I said get your ass - Everything! - Across this floor! What does it mean? -Everything! - What does it mean? - Everything! - You gonna quit? - No! - You gonna give up? - No! - Are you gonna give up? - No! - Come on! - No! - Good! That's better! Like that! That's what it's gonna take.
- I am.
- All right.
I made some big changes in the house already, And I broke through to Carmen.
Now I want to sit down with David Jr.
And see how he's processing all of this.
How you feeling? - I feel sad Over what my dad has to do, What's gonna happen to him if he doesn't lose weight.
I feel sad also since my mom, she was crying last night, Because of my dad.
- We can change all this stuff, Find something fun for you to do, Change the food in the house.
You can pick anything in the world That you want your future to be, And it can or it can't include diabetes.
Good things are happening.
When you go to sleep tonight, Just think about that.
Good things are happening right now.
This kid is only nine years old.
You know, and he's going to bed every night Wondering if his dad's gonna wake up in the morning.
If these guys don't get it together, This kid's in serious trouble.
This is cool.
Yesterday in the gym, I finally heard Carmen's voice, And I think she's ready to take on David Sr.
, So I'm gonna get these two out on a boat In the middle of the ocean, And this guy's not gonna be able to run from her.
There's nowhere he can go.
- I'm sick and I'm tired of you taking me for granted, Taking the kids' health for granted, And making everything like a joke And not taking it seriously.
- You've been in a constant nag For the same crap a year already.
- The nagging, David, it's pleading.
And how would you feel if after 18 years, You had a nine-year-old with a diabetes And a husband that could drop dead any second? - That picture alone Should have had you rolling in tears about little David And feeling bad that you haven't done something earlier To save him.
- Look, I may be quiet, Nobody may think I care about anything, But you know what, I have that picture here.
All right? I have that picture in my heart.
Yes, I feel like an ass.
I feel like dying right now, But you know what? I'm not gonna give up.
'cause last night, I felt like crap Sleeping with that machine.
It's the worst thing that could happen to me.
Just look at myself with that mask again.
- I think the real breakthrough moment Is when David admitted That the mask has made him feel worthless.
Of course, you don't want to do this.
You don't get that unhealthy And feel, you know, a strong sense of self-worth.
- I'm mad at myself, you know.
I'm mad at the whole situation.
- But you gotta talk, buddy.
- 'cause, otherwise, I don't know.
- And then it becomes nagging and panic.
They communicated, they opened up.
It's a seven out of ten.
We've been at a one for the past 2 1/2 days, So are they fully on the same page? I'm hoping so.
- Tomorrow is David's tenth birthday.
It's been a real tough wake-up call, And now it's time to say enough is enough.
I might have failed once, But I'm not gonna do it a second time.
As your dad, I don't want you to go through What I'm going through every day.
I want you to sleep with me tonight So you can see how uncomfortable and how bad it is.
You okay with it? - Mm-hmm.
- You want to put it on? Want to try it? - Okay.
- Hold that there.
- Over my nose? - Yeah.
I put the machine on him.
I just couldn't handle the pain Of him wearing that freaking mask there.
It wasn't right.
It wasn't right.
How does it feel? - Bad.
- Feels bad? - It hurts.
- You think I want to do this? - No.
- You think I want you to do it? - No.
- This right now's gonna save my life, And I don't want this to have to save yours.
Okay? It's either do this, or I'm dead.
Okay? So are we good on it? - Uh-huh.
Trying to get to that level that he thinks, You know, "my dad's gonna get out of this.
" 'cause I don't want him to think That he's gonna need it.
- Hyah.
- I'm bringing the two Davids to a karate dojo today, And the whole idea here is I want David Sr.
To be doing active things with David Jr.
- You must be David.
Hi, I'm Tony.
Pleasure to meet you.
- I think that if little Dave has martial arts, It'll focus him.
You know, that helped me a lot when I was his age.
I was getting picked on, And I can honestly say that it saved my life.
He's got all the same kind of issues, And I'm really hoping that this place works out for him.
Harder, harder.
good.
- Huh huh! - That's it.
- Huh! Huh! - I was amazed sitting there looking at him.
He wanted to keep on going.
It means a lot.
As a parent, I have no words to explain how happy I am.
- Hyah! Hyah! hyah! I was nervous going into class, Then as the sensei showed me the moves And showed me how to throw punches, That's when I started loving it.
- Last one.
- Huh! - That's it.
Good job, guys.
Thanks for your hard work.
- I'm gonna stick with karate for a long time.
I love karate.
I love it.
- Oh.
Oh! I want to bring the Alvarez family To the farmers' market Here on Lincoln road in Miami, Because it's beautiful.
So when's the last time you've been out to Lincoln road? - Whoo, long time.
- Never.
- What do you mean, never? It's 20 minutes from your house.
There's people everywhere.
It's social, it's outdoors.
You have to walk back and forth, get some exercise.
It's a fun thing to do as a family.
Oh, it's an adventure.
What are those? You don't know what that is? You have never had an avocado? They're amazing.
Never had them on your sandwich? We could swap out Mayo for avocado.
It tastes ten time better, It has a similar consistency, It will help you grow up like this, As strong as me.
I don't see any lard bubbling our of your seviche.
Is there any lard in your seviche? - What do you mean, lard? - Exactly my point.
Is it good? This food is medicine.
The food you're eating, poison.
So what do we think? - I could get used to it.
We never usually go to the farmers' market, Especially since we're not into the whole vegetable thing.
I really enjoyed it.
I think we have to there a lot more often now.
- My mother would love this.
- And look how beautiful this is.
Come with the whole family.
I love farmers' markets for a million reasons.
It's way cheaper than going to a supermarket.
It's all fresh.
It's a way of making being healthy fun, And you're also teaching your kids What healthy food should look like.
Okay, we've got all kinds of ingredients.
Let's go.
Let's get this party started! - Hey, buddy.
- It's David Jr.
's tenth birthday.
The whole family is here.
We're gonna have fun.
We're gonna celebrate, But in a healthy, responsible way.
Carmen! This is beautiful! - Here we have our pork loin.
- Where's all the lard? - Seasoning no lard.
- No lard? - No lard.
And we have over here our black beans, Your brown rice.
- Beautiful.
- Our boiled yucca.
All healthy and grease-free for once.
- Buddy.
David, let her eat.
- No, it's fine - You ready for presents? - Yeah.
- All right.
- Presents! Yeah! David seemed really excited about karate, And so I want to give him something for his birthday That's gonna encourage him And help him keep going with this.
- Hey, buddy.
- It's a kick shield so you can practice at home.
Now you have your own gear, So when you spar, you won't get hurt.
So you have focus mitts, shin guards.
- This is the best birthday present.
I got this cool gear for karate I can use every single day, Until I break this with all my hard punches.
- Do your kiai! - Huh! - Look at that! Now he has some karate gear And a push in the right direction.
So what's gonna be different this go round? That's gonna be up to David and Carmen.
It's not their job to put in some structure, Set some rules, And keep this little guy focused, So he gets healthy again.
- All right! Coming up on losing it You gotta pull him past that bench right over there.
Come on, guys.
I can't do it.
I can't.
- Come on out! - So the first thing I want to do Is give you a bodybugg.
And we are going to use this religiously for your workouts.
Pop this on the top of your left arm.
This is my last day with these guys, My last hours with this family.
I think dad will do it for himself.
I think mom will do it for herself.
I think the two parents re-learning how to be With little David is gonna be a challenge.
Weight loss is really nothing Except calories in and calories out.
So we watch the calories that we're putting in With the foods that we're eating, And this will give us a really good, solid idea Of how many calories you're burning in our workout.
- Okay.
- All right? Okay, guys, come on over here.
David, come here, have a seat for me.
- Oh, my God.
- Yep.
I'm putting dad in the boat today And I'm making the family Pull him all the way down the beach, Because this has what's been happening.
And the kids made fun of mom and they nag her and they quit, And she's gotta pull them along too, And it's not gonna happen anymore, Because look where everybody is Sick, unhealthy, and falling apart.
You gotta pull him past that bench Right over there.
So I think when everybody gets an idea Of how physically painful this is, Maybe it will stop once and for all.
- Come on! Come on, guys.
- Come on, David! - Dad, how much do you weigh? - Come on, Dave! Come on! - I can't! - Pull! Pull! Pull! - Come on, Dave.
- Pull! - I can't! - Yes, you can! Come on! Go! Let's do it! - David, you can.
Head up.
I can't! I can't do it! I can't! - You already have, honey.
- David, look.
- David! - David.
- David, don't cry.
Come on.
- Look where we started.
- Watch me.
- Lean back.
Use your weight.
Look at me.
Use your weight.
- Okay.
- And when you guys all do this together Try it together, you already did move it.
What you need to understand is That "can't" isn't gonna be an option anymore.
They need you.
