Macgyver s02e21 Episode Script

D.O.A.: MacGyver

Most people come to southern California for the sunshine.
But there are others who burn easily, so they stay in the shadows.
Anthony Braddock was one of them.
Tony Braddock was a professional chemist.
He'd worked himself out of a career with British intelligence and into building bombs for anyone who'd pay him.
Maybe he wasn't the kind of guy you'd want your kids to grow up to be, but one of his bombs got me out of prison in Morocco.
So when he called early on a quiet Sunday afternoon and said he was in trouble, I had to make good on my IOU.
MacGyver? Tony? Where are you? Right here.
I'm sorry for the fright, old man.
Had to make sure you were alone.
Yeah, I'm alone.
Pete Thornton wanted to come.
It wasn't easy keeping him away.
Peter, yes.
He always disapproved of me.
- A keen judge of character.
- Yeah.
According to the organization, Braddock should be in this area.
Jules, check the warehouses here.
- And when I find him? - You'II come and get me.
Braddock is mine.
Tara.
It's been a Iong time.
Guess you haven't changed.
How Iong you been on the run, Tony? Two weeks.
From the West Coast to the East Coast and back again.
I appreciate your coming.
I remember Morocco.
You saved my Iife.
Yes, a Iot of people would have conveniently forgotten.
Have you ever heard of a man with the code name Lancer? No.
I wish I could say the same.
He hired me to do a job.
Naturally I assumed it was Iegitimate scientific research.
Naturally.
Yeah, I seem to have run out.
You wouldn't happen to? No, of course not.
I found him.
But there's another guy with him.
He could be Braddock's contact.
If he is, it'II be the Iast contact he ever makes.
You were talking about a Iegitimate job.
At Lancer's behest and for a Iarge sum of money, I developed an explosive with a remarkable stable molecular structure.
You can mould it Iike plastic and weave it Iike cloth.
It's quite deadly.
It's my crowning achievement, you might say.
What would Lancer want with it? He's going to assassinate some of the highest-ranking officers in your country's elite anti-terrorist brigade.
Omega Force? None other.
One explosion.
Quite effective.
The means of which I'm afraid I've provided.
Well, what's gonna happen, Tony? When? Where? How? There's gonna be a funeral an intelligence Iiaison with the Omega Force, a civilian.
Several of the key officers will be there to pay their respects.
How will the bomb be disguised? Well, it could be anything from a pair of crutches to the American flag.
He'II place it at the gravesite, Ieave and then set it off.
When is this gonna happen, Tony? Tomorrow, 4:00.
Westside Cemetery.
AII right, I'II call Pete, tell him to notify the authorities.
Tell the brass to stay away from the funeral.
And get you some protection.
MacGyver, whither thou goest, I go too.
MacGyver! He's dead.
What about that other guy, MacGyver? We don't know what Braddock told him.
Killing him shouldn't be difficult.
Yeah? I've heard that song before.
Well, if he had a gun, he would've used it.
No gun, huh? Muriatic acid is used to clean algae off ship hulls.
Add ammonia and it reacts kind of interestingly.
And of course we won't mention the smell.
You gotta be careful when you handle chemicals.
Each of these can be fairly deadly.
But if you mix them together, they neutralize each other, and you get instant chemical fog.
The window! Look.
Forget it.
He's out of range.
The trawler's name is Damian.
- Yeah, I can read.
- Yeah.
We gotta trace the registration and find the home port.
BIood.
Looks Iike you hit him.
It's not good enough.
Gotta make sure he's dead.
This is the trawler Damian.
Yankee-Bravo-Delta 4792, calling the San Pedro marine operator.
San Pedro marine operator, go ahead.
Yeah, I'd Iike to place a call to my home in Bristol Harbour.
Damian, your transmission is breaking up.
Please repeat your transmission.
Can you hear me now? Your transmission is still breaking up.
Please repeat.
Go ahead, Damian.
This is the trawler Damian.
Yankee-Bravo-Delta 4792.
Can you hear me now? Okay, Helen, you called the Iocal hospitals and the police and got nothing.
So call MacGyver's place again.
I Ieft another message five minutes ago.
His machine's running out of tape.
I told him not to go on this meet alone.
I also told him to call me by 5:00, and it's past midnight now.
I know.
Get me the police.
They don't Iabel a person missing till he's been gone for 24 hours.
Well, I can still call them, can't I? I mean, that is what they're for, isn't it? Look, I'm sorry, Helen.
It's getting a Iittle Iate.
Why don't you just go on home.
I will if you will.
Okay, you're the boss.
I'm glad somebody around here knows that.
I don't wanna Ieave you here alone.
I'm a big boy.
So is MacGyver.
Call me if you need me.
PIease help me.
Who are you? How did you get on my boat? Come on, answer me.
- I don't know.
- Just stay right where you are.
- I won't hurt you.
- Yeah, I'II make sure of that.
This is the trawler Damian.
Yankee-Bravo-Delta 4792, calling any Coast Guard unit between San Pedro and Bristol Harbour.
Coast Guard, do you read me? Coast Guard, do you read me? Looks Iike we're stuck with each other.
Tara, try to access that file again.
There has to be some way to access that file.
If there is, I don't know it.
The Damian has to be registered with the Department of Fish and Game.
But it's Sunday night.
AII their computer networks are shut down.
- Tomorrow morning-- - Tomorrow's too Iate.
The funeral is at 4:00.
If MacGyver's still alive, he could tip off the world by then.
I'm not in the habit of picking up hitchhikers.
If we hadn't been in the middle of the ocean, I would have tossed you overboard.
Yeah, I'm glad you didn't.
I don't think I could swim that far.
My coffee tastes Iike diesel fuel, but you want a cup? PIease.
Now, how'd you get on my boat? I don't really know.
The Iast thing I remember was I was shot.
Shot? Look, I'm gonna take you to a doctor, and then you're gonna talk to the police, and then you and I are through.
I'm sorry.
I don't mean to cause you trouble.
You'II be okay.
We can get something to eat at Phil's Diner once we get in.
This is all I have.
Oh, don't worry about it.
Phil Iets me run a tab.
I'm Carol Varnay.
I just introduced myself.
It's customary to respond in kind.
What's your name? I don't know.
You don't know your name? I can't remember.
Hey, not bad.
Thanks.
So where are we? Beautiful Bristol Harbour.
Lots of fishing boats, no fish.
I don't know if I've ever been here before.
How's your head? The outside's sore.
The inside's a Iittle empty.
I'm sure glad you came along when you did.
Thank you.
You're the first thing I've Ianded in weeks.
What's the matter? I don't know.
Just remembering something.
Look, Iet me take you to Dr.
Jennings.
He can take a Iook at your head.
No, I'd rather not.
The doctor's gonna ask questions.
I don't have any answers.
Yet.
I just need some time to think.
So you will inform us when you can release information on the man who went into the water? - Yeah.
We'II Iet you know.
- Okay.
- Benson, the Times.
- Yeah.
What do you got, Iieutenant? One murder victim in the warehouse back there.
Took a 9 mm right in the pump.
Any suspects? - Investigation's in progress.
- No suspects? - No.
- Good Iuck to you.
Yeah.
Pete Thornton, Phoenix Foundation.
What have you got? Oh, yeah.
We found some papers from the Foundation - in that Jeep over there-- - Never mind the papers now.
What about MacGyver? Did you find him? Well, we found this jacket with this ID in it.
- It was floating in the harbour.
- That Iooks Iike blood.
We're gonna run a Iab test.
What's the coroner's wagon doing here? It's a guy named Braddock.
He bought it with a 9 mm.
He's dead.
Anything else? We're gonna start dragging the harbour.
AII right.
Let me know if you find anything new, will you? Of course.
Give us a hand over here.
Excuse me, Mr.
Thornton.
Benson from the Times.
Didn't you use to do intelligence work for the DXS? I've done a Iot of things.
What about it? This man MacGyver.
Was he on some sort of intelligence operation? No, he was here to see a friend about a personal matter.
Did he call you after his meeting? I haven't talked to him since yesterday.
Well, is there any reason anyone would wanna kill him? Well, we don't know that he's dead, do we? I mean, we haven't found a body, have we? That's all I have to say.
Well, I'm sorry to intrude, Mr.
Thornton.
I won't bother you again.
This MacGyver has some connection with Peter Thornton.
Thornton used to be a DXS operative.
Has MacGyver contacted him yet? No, but they haven't found his body either.
If he's alive, he may still try to reach Thornton.
Registration on the Damian.
Home port is Bristol Harbour.
Owned by a woman named Carol Varnay.
Jules, get a car.
Go up there, see what you can find out.
We'II meet you at the old Bristol Harbour Cannery.
Well, you sure know your way around boats.
Why do you say that? Way you handle those moorings.
It takes practice.
Figure you either own your own boat or maybe you worked as a deck hand on someone else's.
I don't know.
Maybe I have.
What is it? I don't know.
Everything I'm remembering is filled with explosions and gunfights, and I'm right in the middle of them.
I don't know why.
Jason, what happened to your bike? I promise I was careful.
It just broke again.
This is my nephew Jason.
Jason, this is a friend of mine.
- Hi.
- Hi, Jason.
Listen would you be willing to sacrifice this nameplate if it would get you going again? Sure.
I guess so.
This happen a Iot? Yeah, I think this bike is jinxed.
It's Iike it always breaks at the wrong time.
Things Iike this usually will.
Mine used to come apart every time I had something real important to go to.
Where were you headed? I was on my way to a Little League game and the chain came off.
I didn't get there until the fifth inning.
We Iost.
See, the problem here is the sprocket teeth are all worn down.
What we're gonna do is make a Iittle guide for the chain.
Ought to keep it on track.
And next time you'II get to the game early.
Maybe come up with a win.
There.
That ought to do it.
Just Iike that.
You fixed it! Thanks! That was pretty good.
The way you fixed that bike.
Thanks.
Come on.
Let's get something to eat.
We should be there in another 20 minutes.
We're making good time.
How Iong do you think it took that boat to get there? Bristol Harbour's 52 miles up the coast.
The Damian should have made it back to home port early this morning.
As of two hours ago, Thornton hadn't heard from MacGyver.
There are two possibilities: Either he's alive or he's dead.
If he's dead, they'II bury him.
If not, we'II find him and kill him.
It's that simple.
It's not simple at all.
If MacGyver's passed on his information, this whole thing could blow up in our faces.
Speaking of which, when are we going to pick up the explosive? Oh, it's been here all along.
Woven right into the Iining.
AII I have to do is set the timer.
So how Iong have you Iived here? AII my Iife.
I grew up here with my dad and brother.
A Iot of memories.
We were pretty inseparable.
"Were"? Yeah, you know that storm two years ago? EIeanor? Took them overboard.
Never found them.
I'm sorry.
The Varnays are fishermen.
AIways have been.
So now I've got the Damian and I know I should sell her, but You know what I really want to get into? What? Marine science.
Research.
- Why don't you? - It's not that easy.
There's something about that boat and this place.
It's got a hold on me.
It sounds Iike you're trapped by things you remember.
I'm trapped by things I can't.
Phoenix.
Phoenix.
Arizona? No.
No.
Something's coming back, but I can't get a handle on it.
Has it got something to do with the mythology of the bird rising out of the ashes? No.
No.
Business? An address or something? Could it be a person's name? Somebody you know, a friend? Or maybe it's a symbol.
You know, Iike a sign.
A sign-- A sign maybe where you work? The Phoenix Foundation.
It's in Los Angeles.
Come on, what's the number? Well, call information.
No, it's a special number.
A private one.
I called Sam Taylor in Washington and asked for an update on Anthony Braddock, including all current connections.
And what did he say? That you no Ionger have unlimited security access.
Sam said that? What is he doing, turning bureaucrat on me? Get him on the phone right away.
- Calm down.
- I wanna talk to him! I reminded him of the time you covered his tail in Marseilles.
And that I still had the pictures.
You kept those shots? No, but he doesn't know that.
So Anthony Braddock is tied to someone with the code name Lancer.
Nationality unknown.
No home base.
Well, what does this Lancer do? He kills people.
AII over the world.
Strictly cash on the gravestone.
Sam says they think Lancer is planning a hit.
Could be anytime now.
Could be MacGyver.
That's gotta be the police.
I gave them the private Iine.
Yes? Hello.
Is this the Phoenix Foundation? MacGyver! Where are you? MacGyver, is that you? MacGyver.
Come on, answer! Helen, get on the other line.
- Do you know him? - Oh, he's my ace buddy.
He's Iost his memory.
Well, if he'II come along with me, I'II try and help him find it.
Right this way.
Don't talk, just move.
Talk to me! Talk to me! So who are you? - What do you want with me? - No questions.
Come on, Iet's get out of here.
MacGyver, this is Pete.
You gotta answer me.
Please! You gotta answer me.
MacGyver! Carol, could that guy have been the police? No, if he was the police, he would've said so.
Besides, what do the police want with you? I don't know.
But things are starting to come back to me.
That Phoenix Foundation, that was real.
I gotta have time to think.
- Well, do it at my place.
Come on.
- Wait, wait, wait.
Look.
I don't want to get you in trouble.
If I want your advice, pal, I'II ask for it.
Now come on.
MacGyver was on the telephone when I got there.
Said something about Phoenix Foundation.
Peter Thornton.
What did MacGyver tell him? I didn't give him a chance to say anything.
- That's when I pulled my gun.
- That's why you're an idiot.
Don't call me that.
I'm the one that found Braddock in the first place.
But you Iet MacGyver get away.
- Look, don't you start.
- She's right.
If you don't Iike the way I'm handling things, then pay me off and I'm gone.
But I've got enough on the both of you to put you away until you rot.
So I guess I'm not such an idiot after all.
Of course not, Jules.
I apologize.
You did what you felt you had to do.
Besides, he didn't tell Thornton anything.
The girl said he Iost his memory.
Carol Varnay.
Find her home address.
I'II set the detonator.
So MacGyver has amnesia.
And amnesia is not a permanent condition.
It just has to Iast until the funeral today.
I don't think we can count on that.
Very good, Jules.
Now Thornton knows MacGyver is still alive, and if he had the call traced, he'II be on his way.
If he gets to MacGyver before we do-- Well, we can't Iet that happen, can we? AII right, thank you.
That's great.
That call from MacGyver came from a public phone on the Bristol Harbour pier, I'm going up there.
Call Sam Taylor.
I want the Iatest information he's got on this Lancer character.
- Wait! Take your coat! - Thank you.
No answer? No.
And it's the same number I called before.
Someone was there.
Now, the man on the phone called you MacGyver.
Doesn't that mean anything to you? No, it's just a name.
Well, it's a start.
Now, Iook, all we've gotta do is put the pieces of this puzzle together.
I'm great at puzzles.
Carol, everything I'm remembering is so violent.
For all we know, I could be a criminal.
I don't think you are.
- I could be.
- Do you feel Iike one? No.
But with all these flashes of memory, what if I am? I'II take my chances.
Hi.
Hi.
Did you happen to see a man using that end phone there? I'm not supposed to talk to strangers.
He's a good friend, a really good friend of mine, and he's in trouble.
Well, what's he Iook Iike? Well, he's kind of tall, a Iittle over six feet.
He's got brown hair, Iong in back, brown eyes.
He's a nice guy.
He doesn't dress Iike me.
Kind of casual.
He was here.
I never said.
He made that! How did you know? Well, Iet's just say I recognize the work.
His name is MacGyver.
He can fix anything.
He could fix a computer with a hairpin and a piece of duct tape.
Just Iike he fixed your bike.
Will you help me to help him? Tara, do you have the address of the Varnay house? MacGyver and the girl can both make me.
I want to take care of them now.
Fine, Jules.
The sooner the better.
I thought you wanted MacGyver alive.
- I do.
- Then why did you say that? I have to assume MacGyver told Thornton about our plan.
And Thornton is setting a trap for me at the funeral.
You don't have to go through with it.
I have a contract.
But you have to protect yourself and the organization.
If there is a trap, I can use MacGyver to get Thornton.
And Jules can help me do it.
I keep getting so close to putting everything together, and then nothing happens.
It could be anything from a pair of crutches to the American flag.
- MacGyver? - MacGyver! MacGyver? - He's dead.
- Who? I saw him get shot.
What? What are you talking about? I'm really not sure.
Something about a killing.
Killing? Where? At a cemetery.
The Westside Cemetery.
Who? Who's gonna get killed? I don't know.
But it's gonna happen today.
I'm gonna try that Phoenix Foundation number again.
- Your phone is dead.
- And so are you.
Carol, get out of here! Get the police! Get up! GIad I got here in time.
Are you okay? - Yeah.
- Guess the target was you.
You just saved my Iife.
Who are you? MacGyver, you really don't know who I am? I've Iost my memory.
It's J.
D.
Jonathan Dawkins.
Military intelligence.
I'm your boss.
Don't you remember anything? AII I remember is that there's gonna be a killing at the Westside Cemetery.
I don't know how I know that or why.
Well, that was your assignment.
That's what we sent you in to find out.
Do you know when this is taking place? Sometime today.
That's the Thompkins funeral.
The officers from the Omega Force will be there.
Omega Force? The cemetery's an hour away.
We still have time get there.
I need you to stop the killer.
Any idea who it is? Oh, we've got a suspect.
He's a professional terrorist.
His name's Peter Thornton.
Mobile command post to Omega base.
Omega base, this is Major Dawkins.
We're on our way to the Westside Cemetery.
Set up our perimeter security, but keep it covert.
We don't want our suspect Thornton to cut and run.
I'II remain in contact.
So how Iong have I been with military intelligence? Oh, it'II be five years next month.
We'II get you the best help available.
But first we've gotta stop this assassination.
We've gotta know if your information has been compromised.
Peter Thornton is a member of a terrorist group.
The front is called the Phoenix Foundation.
Phoenix Foundation.
Yeah, I talked to somebody there.
I'm not sure who it was.
Well, that had to have been Thornton.
He's the man who engineered the coup down in San Cortez.
You've been Iooking for him for five years.
And he's been trying to kill you.
MacGyver, if you remember anything, remember this face.
Half an hour.
If I'd found out half an hour earlier I might have been here in time.
What do you think has happened to MacGyver? I'm afraid Lancer has him.
The only information we have on him is that he's planning an assassination.
And we don't know where.
MacGyver said something about a killing.
- He what? - It was all in bits and pieces, but he said it was supposed to happen today at the Westside Cemetery.
Oh, that's gotta be it.
Thank you.
Thank you, Miss Varnay.
Pull it up right here.
Wait for us on the upper service road.
You okay? If anything happens, if Thornton shows up, you know who he is and what he's trying to do.
Don't take any chances.
That's right, Helen, the Westside Cemetery.
And, oh, I need police backup.
What is a man that God might take notice of him? My friends Joe Thompkins was the kind of man God and all of us surely noticed.
And we will miss him more than we can measure.
He was a beloved husband and father, a dear and Ioyal friend.
And though we have come together today to mourn his passing, we rejoice in the triumph of his Iife I'm checking perimeter security.
Keep an eye out for Thornton.
--will return to our Heavenly Father who made it, and that his soul will be forever part of the glory of God's holy kingdom.
But remember, our Lord said, "BIessed are the peacemakers.
" In a world shattered by senseless violence that so tragically often strikes at the innocent, our friend was a peacemaker.
He saw the task.
He accepted it.
He made of his Iife a testament to his country, his service, his people.
He defended flag and country in faraway places, fighting for the right MacGyver! Hold it.
Stay right there.
I know you've got amnesia.
You don't know who I am, do you? You're Peter Thornton.
You're a killer.
Put down the gun.
I wouldn't.
I have a picture in my wallet of the two of us together.
- I want to show it to you.
- I said, don't move.
Right now I know you better than you know yourself.
You don't use guns.
That gun doesn't feel right in your hand.
It can't.
You don't use guns, MacGyver.
You hate them.
That number you called at the Phoenix Foundation.
That was my number.
You were trying to reach me, whether you knew it or not.
I saved your Iife.
You were buried in an avalanche.
And I dug you out.
I saved you.
Somewhere deep inside you've got to know that.
MacGyver, we're coming! Go easy, go easy.
We don't wanna hit him.
Easy.
Take it easy.
Look out, now.
Are you all right? Thanks, Pete.
Pete.
Thank God.
Tony Braddock said there's gonna be a killing.
Did he tell you about Lancer? Lancer's gonna do it at the funeral.
Come on.
Lancer planted an explosive.
- Where? - I don't know.
I'II clear the area.
--will follow me all the days of my Iife, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
AII right, everyone.
- Down.
Down.
- Move out of the area.
You can mould it Iike plastic or weave it like cloth.
Or weave it Iike cloth.
Like cloth.
It's the coat.
The bomb's in the coat.
MacGyver, is that Lancer? - Yeah.
- Is that--? - Yeah! - Well, get rid of it! I am! If you knew this was happening, why didn't you call the police? I did.
Well, I'II be.
Nice to meet you again, Pete.
So you mean the Phoenix Foundation pays you a bonus after every assignment? No, well, they don't exactly pay.
They kind of do things.
They arranged for me to have a scrimmage with a pro hockey team one time and arranged for a scholarship for a Iittle girl.
And they bought some new wheels for a friend of mine.
Is it really for me? Yeah, I'd say it's about the right size.
Thanks, MacGyver.
Check it out.
So you are one of the good guys after all.
Told you.
Oh, you did more than that.
You saved my Iife.
And the Iives of a Iot of other people too.
Thank you.
You made me Iook at my Iife in a whole new way.
Memories are okay to have as Iong as they don't get in the way of dreams.
Am I hearing what I think I'm hearing? Marine science.
Going back to school.
Nights and weekends.
It's gonna take a Iittle Ionger, but I'II do it.
And you'II be invited to graduation.
Well, that's something I won't forget.
MacGyver! Look! Watch this.
