Magnum P.I. (2018) s01e08 Episode Script

Die He Said

- You need to stop.
- What do you mean? I mean you're all over the place.
You have to be methodical if we're gonna find this.
I didn't tell you to wear the thing in the water.
I've swum in this ocean over 100 times with that necklace.
I propose we do a grid search.
Oh, as a former U.
Navy SEAL, I think we should probably do - a spiral search or a jackstay.
- No, no, no.
A grid search will give us greater coverage.
Hey, Kumu! How's it going with the drone? I think I'm getting the hang of it.
Kumu, that is a $2,000 piece of hardware.
Could-could you please be careful? It's all good, Ms.
I got this.
So, uh, what's my reward - if I find your necklace? - What do you want? Let's just say you owe me a favor.
Haven't you already prepaid that debt several times over in the form of bullet wounds, free car rides and the repeated use of my laptop? Those are work favors.
Totally different.
Thomas! Your phone is ringing.
Can you get it for me? So, what do you say? We got a deal? Fine.
I'll owe you a favor.
- Let's get after it.
- Thomas! You should take this.
It's about a job.
I'm sorry, Higgy.
I got to go.
I haven't had a paid job in weeks.
But I promise, I will find your necklace.
Thomas Magnum.
He's over here.
Thank you.
You must be Thomas Magnum.
Thanks for coming on such short notice.
Of course.
Can I buy you a shave ice? Uh, no, I'm-I'm good.
Thank you.
Well, if you don't mind, I'm gonna finish mine while we chat.
Trust me, hospital food sucks.
This happens to be the best meal of the day.
Too bad.
So, how long you been here? Two months.
I've got non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
- I'm sorry to hear that.
- Me, too.
Mine's stage IV.
Doctors say I don't have much time.
That's tough.
I was diagnosed three years ago but took a turn for the worst last month.
Up until then, I thought for sure I was gonna beat this.
There's got to be something else they can try.
There is.
A bone marrow transplant.
Trouble is they can't find a donor.
I'm half-Hawaiian, and only four percent of donors are mixed-race, so not a whole lot of candidates out there.
There is one person I know for sure is a match, and that's my younger brother, Bobby.
Problem is we haven't spoken in eight years.
We had a falling-out after our dad passed away.
Now I can't even find him.
It's like he just dropped off the grid.
- And you want me to track him down.
- Yes.
Even if I tracked him down, would would he be willing to help? Uh, I'm not sure, Mr.
But I'd still like to see him.
Try to make things right between us.
But I'm hoping he says yes.
Bobby's my only chance, Mr.
Without his help, I'm gonna die.
I've been asked to look for a lot of things people, paintings, even a cat.
Usually there's something to go on, some sort of lead.
This was gonna be much more difficult, and not just because there were no leads.
With this case, one life was literally depending on another, a situation I was all too familiar with.
Forget it, Magnum.
Out of the question.
Captain, Lieutenant Brooks needs a surgeon that can do carotid artery repair.
The only one this side of Kabul is Is pinned down in a hostile zone.
I'm sorry, but I'm not gonna lose four guys to save one.
And even if I were inclined, there are airstrikes in progress.
All birds are grounded.
Sir, I went to the academy with Brooks.
I've spent holidays with his family.
I can't sit around and do nothing.
Your loyalty to Brooks is admirable, son.
But I'm your commanding officer, and this is my call.
I'm sorry, but you are to stand down.
Let me guess he said, "Grab whatever gear you need and go get the doc.
" No.
Well, we're going anyway, right? We're the guys who get it done.
What do you think? I think we're about to disobey a direct order.
Something I can do for you? Yes, actually.
Uh, I need to collect on that favor you owe me.
- But you haven't found my necklace yet.
- No, I haven't.
I will.
Think of it as an advance.
An advance? Look, trust me, I'd rather bank this favor for another time, but this is important, and I'm trying to find this guy, and this is all I got.
Name and Social.
I need an address.
This guy's got to be paying bills somewhere.
Look, I'm-I'm gonna find your missing necklace.
Okay? I-I promise.
My word is my bond.
Why are you laughing? I find things all the time.
So, what's the deal with this necklace? I mean, it doesn't look expensive.
Certainly not worth the Herculean effort you're putting in to finding it.
It's got to have some sentimental value.
Am I right? You want to read something, Magnum, why don't you try a book.
Masters has plenty you can peruse.
Perhaps you could even find a short one with some pictures in it to amuse yourself.
I am treating this missing necklace like any other case.
Like any other case, I ask a lot of questions.
Walk me through your morning.
I got up, I went for a swim, and then when I went to take a shower, - I realized it was missing.
- Then what happened? What do you mean, then what happened? Then it was lost.
I'm sorry.
Some people mess up the chronology of things.
What happened next? I threw on another rash guard and a bathing suit, and I got back in the water to look for it.
- Did you get something to eat? - No.
Sure you don't want to write this down? No.
It's all up here.
Steel trap.
There you are.
No physical address, but it appears Mr.
Malua has a P.
box on the North Shore.
Hey, uh something's wrong with the copier.
It's Paper's stuck.
I know that seemed mean, but I may have postponed the onset of carpal tunnel for that guy by, oh, uh for at least a couple days.
Meanwhile, yours truly needed to get into his computer and match Bobby's name with a P.
And 112 looks to be the winner.
Sure, stealing mail is a federal offense, but I need to find Bobby, or his brother will die.
And this lease agreement with a business address is a good place to start.
Looks like it's a grocery store.
The Moku Market.
That's where I'll find Bobby.
Hey, William.
Uh, no, I was just calling to check in.
Hope that's okay.
Of course.
Uh, well, how's it going? Uh, any progress? Maybe.
Yeah, I think I might have a lead.
Well, listen, I-I was thinking, if you don't find my brother in time, uh, I-I'd like for you to show him something.
It's a video.
Uh, it's just some stuff I wanted to get off my chest.
Things I need him to know.
I'll make sure he sees it.
Thank you.
No problem.
We're closed.
Really? 11:00 a.
? We're doing inventory today.
Uh, I'm looking for Bobby Malua.
Bobby's not here.
- Know where I can find him? - No.
All right, call me cynical, but I don't think that guy was telling the truth.
I'm getting tired of watching this, Bobby.
How we gonna make this right? I'm open to suggestions.
Go check it out.
Huh? What you gonna do? - Who the hell are you? - Thomas Magnum.
I'm a private investigator.
Your brother sent me to find you.
William sent you? - Yeah.
- What's he want? - Your marrow.
- My what? Can we talk about this some other place? Okay, so explain this whole marrow thing.
Your brother's got cancer his only hope is a bone marrow transplant, and you're the only match.
Hang on.
Okay, now your turn.
Who the hell are these guys? Meth dealers.
They think I stole their money.
Okay, I stole their money.
But it's complicated.
Of course it is.
Get out.
I'm gonna need a little more than, "It's complicated.
" The guy in charge is Manny.
He runs the ice trade up here.
About eight months ago, he and his guys forced me to use my store to launder their drug money.
Forced you? It's complicat - Hey, don't say it.
- Look I got a wife and a six-year-old.
A boy named Kai.
Manny said he'd hurt them.
I did what I did to keep them safe.
Right up until the time you decided to steal money from those guys.
It wasn't like that.
I was desperate to get out from under, so I staged a robbery.
I figured if Manny realized their money wasn't safe at the store, - he'd take it somewhere else.
- That was your plan? I didn't know what else to do.
I couldn't go to the cops.
So I had a guy who used to work in the stockroom come in with a gun and mask and rob the safe.
Only Manny didn't fall for it.
Whole thing was caught on surveillance cameras.
Thought it looked legit.
What about your son and his mom? Where are they? Off island.
I sent them away.
And you were gonna use the money to join them? How much money are we talking about? $104,000.
Yeah, a guy like Manny is not just gonna forget about that kind of money.
Which is why I have to get off this rock.
Nope, you can't do that.
You have to come with me first.
Look I feel bad for Willie, but I stick around, I'm a dead man.
I've got a family.
Do you think running is gonna solve anything? Guys like this, they're gonna find you eventually.
You only have one move, and that's to give them back the money.
These guys are drug dealers.
I do that, and they might just put a bullet in my head anyhow.
You let me worry about that.
I'm gonna give Manny back his money and try to fix things between you two guys.
But after that, no matter what, you are coming back with me, and you're gonna save your brother.
So where's the money? Where's the guy that has it? What's his name? - Devon.
- Does Manny know about Devon? - No.
- Are you sure? Yeah.
I didn't tell him.
He tried to get it out of me when you showed up.
Okay, where do we find this guy? I was really hoping to never see Manny and his goons again.
But if I'm going to save my client, I first have to save his brother.
I just hope Bobby can hold it together.
I mean, I feel bad for the guy being asked to choose between his brother and his family, having to prioritize one person over another but this wasn't the first time I'd asked someone to make that kind of decision.
Go! Move, move, move! Major Hawthorne.
I'm Lieutenant Thomas Magnum.
I need you to come back to Bagram with us right away.
Can't do it, Lieutenant.
I've got patients here.
Sir, this is a medical emergency.
Look around we got plenty of those here, too.
This situation's critical.
We have a Navy SEAL in need of immediate surgery.
You're the only one downrange that can do the procedure.
These patients need my attention.
I can't leave them.
We'll get another doctor down here to cover for you.
We'll have you back here on the ground in 24 hours.
That is a promise.
Please, sir.
This man's life hangs in the balance.
You're his only hope.
Devon? Looks like Devon left in a hurry.
Bobby? I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that's where the money was hidden.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Voice mail.
That's it.
I got to go.
I'm screwed.
Whoa, what about William? Don't you get it? I stick around, I'm gonna catch a bullet.
Yeah, you leave, your brother dies.
You want that on your conscience? I lost my father.
I know what it's like.
I'm not putting my son through that! Word of advice.
You're gonna run, you stay as far away from your son as possible.
'Cause no matter where you go, these guys are gonna find you.
What happens if your son's there when they do? There's still a way out of this.
How? Let me do what I do.
I'll find Devon, I'll get the money back, and we'll go back to the original plan and give it to Manny.
Devon's gone.
How are you gonna find him? Look, if Devon packed his suitcase, he had the same idea you did.
He's trying to get off the island.
What are you doing? Well, most people hide their password in one of five places.
Really, Devon? Your name spelled backwards? You think you can remember that? Well, looks like he bought a plane ticket.
Is that Devon? No.
It's my wife.
Hey, babe.
Hey, what happened to you? Nothing.
It's okay.
You okay? Yeah.
I was just worried about you.
Our old landlord just called.
He said two sketchy guys came around looking for me.
That's got to be Manny, right? Don't worry about that.
I'm fine.
You're fine.
- Are you sure? - Yeah, yeah.
It's all good.
Where's my guy? You want me to go get him? No, no, no.
Let him play.
Just let me watch him for a minute.
Say hi to Daddy.
Hey, babe, I got to go, okay? When are we gonna see you? Soon.
I'm working on something.
There may still be a way out of all this.
Just stay strong, okay? Whatever you're doing, please be careful.
I will.
I love you.
I love you, too.
Looks like Devon didn't disappoint.
Got a ticket back to the mainland.
Of course he's booked first class.
Bastard's already spending the money.
Plane leaves in an hour.
We can still catch him.
Hey, Rick, it's me.
You still got that friend that works at the TSA? Manny was looking for my wife and kid.
Yeah, you were smart to send them off the island.
Guy like Manny will use anything as leverage, especially family.
I guess it's a good thing he doesn't know about William.
What happened between you and your brother? It wasn't one thing.
We grew up without a mom, and my dad he always favored Willie.
When I was in high school, our dad got sick.
Willie was off at college, so I took care of him.
Put my life on hold for three years.
No matter what I did, it was never good enough.
Why'd you leave the island after your father died? I was angry.
Missed out on college, so I thought I'd travel I don't know see the world.
Instead, I never went anywhere.
I know he thinks I'm a loser.
William? He doesn't think that.
We said some stuff to each other before I left.
He offered me a job, I turned him down, and he was angry about that.
Which is crazy, because I'm the one who made sacrifices when our dad was sick.
I'm the one who deserved to be angry.
I think you're wrong about your brother.
I think he misses you.
In fact, he made a video message he wanted you to see.
Ah, save it, man.
I don't want to see it.
My buddy cleared us to the gate, but the flight's about to board, so we got to hustle.
If Devon's smart, he'll lay low until the last minute.
You go to security check, Rick and I will go to the gate.
- Do you have a picture of Devon? - Yeah.
Okay, send it to me.
If he sees you, he's gonna bolt.
Call me if you see him.
So tell me something how's this guy Devon think he's gonna get all that cash through baggage check? I don't know, but it doesn't matter.
We just got to find him, get the cash and get Bobby to the hospital - so he can save his brother.
- Huh.
Getting one person to save another sounds kind of familiar.
A little bit like Brooks.
I know.
You know, I still think about him.
Me, too.
Been replaying that day in my head.
Get down! Go! Hurry up, boys.
We're under attack.
Come on, Doc.
Follow us.
Stay close.
Go! Go! Go! Come on! Nuzo, Doc's hit.
I got you covered.
Come on.
Get him up.
Gonna get you out of here.
Move it! TC, let's move! Let's go! Let's go! Rick, keep laying fire.
You'll be all right.
We did everything we could, you know? Did we? Come on.
Devon's flight is starting to board.
This is Devon.
Go check with the guy at the gate.
I'm gonna look around.
Hey, Bobby, you see him? Oh, I'm sorry, man.
Bobby can't come to the phone right now.
He's got a gun on him.
But he just told us everything.
I mean, that's just so sad.
That thing with his brother just tugs at the heart strings.
You wouldn't have bothered to call if you were gonna hurt him, so let's talk about what you want.
You're pretty direct, aren't you? All right, Mr.
, this is how it's gonna go down.
We're your new clients now.
You want Bobby and his bone marrow? You're gonna find his partner and our money.
Every last dollar.
You're gonna deliver both to us.
I'll hit you back in two hours and let you know where.
Two hours is not enough time.
Ok, so we know Devon show first flight, so I called up my guy at HPD.
Their plate readers picked up his car about an hour ago.
- Where? - Headed south on Waialua Ranch Road.
- You sure? - Yeah.
Why? I surf that break all the time.
Waialua Ranch Road dead-ends into nothing.
This is hopeless.
Have faith, Ms.
If that necklace of yours is somewhere in the sand, this baby will find it.
Robin Masters paid a lot of money for this little toy.
Do you even know how to use that device? I think so.
I watched a video on YouTube.
Look who it is.
Higgins, I need another advance on that favor.
Uh, "advance" implies future payment.
And as Kumu and I are currently the only ones looking for my necklace No, you don't have to do that.
I said I'm gonna find it.
I'm gonna find it.
But right now I need help.
What is it? I'm looking for a car.
A rust-color 1960s Plymouth.
Last seen in a remote part of Waialua.
Can you get some satellite coverage, see if you can spot it? That's no small favor, Magnum.
Normally I wouldn't ask, but there are literally two people's lives on the line.
Higgins was able to mark Devon's car and drop a pin for us to follow, but Rick was right: the road did lead to nowhere.
Which begs the question: what was Devon doing out here? Looks abandoned.
Check the trunk.
Uh, Thomas? Got something? Yeah, you could say that.
- That's Devon, right? - Yeah.
Rigor hasn't set in.
He was probably killed in the last few hours.
Looks like someone tuned him up pretty good first.
You think he was double-crossed by someone - he came out here to meet? - I don't think so.
He wouldn't drive out here without shoes.
Plus, this looks like an area rug.
I think he was killed inside his apartment.
All right, I can see those wheels turning.
I don't think Devon was running at all.
I think the guy who killed him wanted to make it look that way.
Packed his bag full of clothes, bought a plane ticket with his credit card, make it look like he skipped town.
But why? I mean, who would go through all that trouble? Somebody who wanted the money and didn't want anybody to find out.
It's a blocked number.
Yeah? Find it yet? Yeah, yeah.
I got your money.
All of it? $104,000.
Where do you want it? I'm texting the address right now.
If you're not there in 30 minutes, well, good luck finding another bone marrow donor.
Also, I think it goes without saying Yeah, yeah, I know.
Come alone.
I get the feeling you've handled these kind of trades before.
I have some experience.
Look, I'll be there in 30, but just make sure you, your two boys and Bobby are out in the open.
I don't want to get shot in the back.
30 minutes.
Obviously, you're not going alone.
When this thing goes south and it definitely will when they find out I don't have the money I'm gonna need some backup.
That's close enough.
How you doing, Bobby? He's alive.
Is that my money? It's all right here.
I don't see the guy who stole it.
That's because he's dead.
You're one badass private eye.
Drop the suitcase on the ground, back away.
Let me ask you a question first.
How'd you know we were gonna be at the airport? You didn't have a tail.
I would have picked him up.
So how'd you know we were gonna be there? 'Cause it wasn't you we was looking for.
We took another glance at that surveillance tape.
The guy who robbed the safe, he walked with a limp.
And I know everybody who's ever worked at that store.
Thought maybe it was that guy Devon.
So we went to his place, found a plane ticket.
Now, give me my money.
But you all didn't go together.
Two of you went to Bobby's ex's.
Which one of you went to Devon's? - What does it matter? - This is crazy, Manny.
The guy's stalling.
It was him, wasn't it? You sent him to Devon's.
What the hell's that got to do with anything? He's trying to pull something.
He either has the cash or he don't.
No, he's right.
I don't have the cash.
But I know who does.
Let's smoke this guy.
No, just-just hear me out.
You'll be glad you did.
Talk fast.
You sent him to check on Devon, right? But he saw an opportunity to enrich himself.
So he killed Devon, made it look like he went on the run, and took the money for himself.
He's lying.
You don't have to take my word for it.
Just look at the location history on his phone.
He went to Waialua Ranch Road right after he killed Devon and dropped his car off.
Take out your phone.
- Whoa.
Hey! - Do it! - You gonna believe this guy, Manny? - You heard him! Hey, hey, let me just say one thing.
Rick! Bobby, run! Son of a bitch! You okay, Bobby? I don't think so.
Hang on, Bobby, hang on.
Come on.
TC's two minutes out.
Hang on, Bobby.
We're gonna get you out of here.
Okay, let's go.
We got you, Bobby.
Hang in there, buddy.
All right, come on.
Step up.
Step up.
There you go.
Let's go, TC! Gunshot wound, inbound, five minutes! Hang in there, Bobby.
Hang on, Doc.
We're almost there! Hang on.
- TC! - I can't go any faster! - Come on! - Look at me.
Look at me.
You are not dying today.
You hear me? You are not dying today.
My brother's - My - What was that? My brother's message.
My brother's message.
Hey, bro.
Guess I've looked better, huh? I wanted you to see this in case you decided not to come back or if I couldn't hold on long enough.
I just want to say that I'm sorry.
My biggest regret was not finding you sooner and telling you this.
I was so angry at the way you left, but what I've come to realize is I was just angry at myself, for not appreciating the sacrifice you made, taking care of Dad.
Angry for letting you take that all on, for only thinking about myself.
I just want you to come back.
Not just for the transplant, but because I miss you.
You're my brother.
My family.
And, uh, if I don't see you, I just want you to know that I'm sorry and that I love you.
Save my brother.
Tell him tell him Now, listen to me.
Whatever you want to tell him, you got to tell him yourself.
Bobby, stay with me, buddy.
Bobby! Hang on.
One, two, three.
Get him inside.
Trauma 1.
Let's go.
I take full responsibility for the actions of my team, sir.
I disobeyed your direct orders, so if there's gonna be court-martialing No one's getting court-martialed.
You guys thought you could pull out a win.
The odds were against you from the start.
That doesn't excuse disobeying a direct order, but as far as consequences goes, you're looking at it.
Today is gonna haunt you for a long time.
You know what this whole thing kind of reminds me of? Brooks.
You ever think about what we could have done differently? No.
'Cause I know we gave everything we had.
Just like we did today.
That's all you can ever do.
How things turn out from there that ain't up to us, bro.
How are they? Doc says the marrow transplant seems to have taken.
It's all preliminary, but they're optimistic.
That's great news.
Thank you for finding my brother.
You saved my life.
Hold up.
Who saved your life? Please, you were unconscious for your part.
Bobby, I meant every word in the video.
Every word.
How? I told you, I'm a really good private investigator.
Seriously, how-how did you find it? You wore two rash guards.
The first one when you went out to swim, the second one when you went back in there to look for the necklace.
When you took the first one off It got tangled up inside it.
I found it in the washing machine.
Good thing you didn't put the cycle on, because it definitely would have been gone.
Thank you, Magnum.
You're welcome.
And thank you for the satellite thing.
Oh, uh, one more question.
Did Robin give that to you? Because on the back of the pendant, the inscription says, "Love, R.
" No.
No, it's-it's not from Robin.
That's it? That's all you're gonna give me? Good night, Magnum.
You know, I could find out if I really wanted to.
Good luck with that.
Oh, really? Sounds like a challenge.
And I accept.
Isn't it past your bedtime? Night, Higgins.
Good night, Thomas.
You know, I'm gonna find out who it is.
Trust me.
I'm a really good private investigator, if I haven't told you that already.
