Make It or Break It (2009) s03e06 Episode Script

Listen to the Universe

Previously on Make It or Break It Everyone, meet Otis.
It's a tradition to rub his head for luck.
Hold that girl, y'all.
She stole my phone, man, she stole my phone.
- You used me.
- Welcome to the TC.
I talked to Dr.
Curtis, she told me you have an irregular heartbeat.
You've got to stop her, she can't do this.
You can't let her do this.
I know you're the mole here, Jordan.
- [Kaylie.]
You're the mole? - It was you? I am so sorry.
You need me - Good.
- Thanks.
All that time we thought Jordan was the mole and she wasn't.
Makes you feel a little icky, doesn't it? I never accused her.
To her face.
And neither did you.
We judged her and that makes us jerks.
Damn.
She is fierce.
Like an angry pit bull.
She could easily be a part of the London Five.
Don't you think we need to make things right if we plan to be on the same team as her? OK, you're right.
We should apologize.
Hey, Jordan.
Can we talk? [scoffs.]
About what? About the whole mole thing.
Kaylie and I thought you were the one ratting us out to the coach and, um we're sorry.
Yeah, we're sorry.
Well, it wouldn't be the first time someone misjudged me.
You see? There's no getting through to her.
- She's pretty hard-headed.
- Mm-hm.
What? Right now Lauren is stuck in a hospital bed hating me for all of the wrong reasons.
I would do anything to prove to her that I was just trying to help her, but she won't even see me.
Wait, are you comparing Lauren to Jordan? I'm just saying, maybe you have the wrong idea about her, that's all.
Maybe you and Jordan are still holding on to a grudge from when you were 12.
Payson, I know her, OK? Lauren, you have a particularly rare form of supraventricular tachycardia, a heart rhythm disorder.
The best possible treatment for your case is open heart surgery.
Dr.
Lim is one of the top cardiac surgeons in the country, Lauren.
So, what happens now? I've arranged with the training center officials for you to stay here at the USATC Medical Center.
In four days you will go in for the surgery.
In the meantime, the staff here will monitor your condition and run a necessary battery of tests in preparation for the procedure.
How soon can I get back to training? I mean, I'm an athlete so I should recover quickly, right? You're gonna need several months of serious rest before you resume any normal activities.
Normal activities? I'm sorry, Lauren, but there is no possibility of you returning to training for the 2012 Games.
This can't be happening.
Dad, there's no other option?! I'm afraid not, Lauren.
We have to go with the open heart surgery.
It's for the best.
How could that be for the best? It couldn't be any worse! If my dream is dead, I don't care about getting well! I went by the med center to check in on Lauren and I met her dad.
Total sweetie.
[sighs.]
Poor Lauren, though.
She's having open heart surgery, so she's out.
She has a heart? Funny! I am so lucky to be rooming with you.
I mean, if I was rooming with Kaylie, ugh, I'd never have any fun.
[sarcastic.]
Whee.
I mean, I like Kaylie but she's kind of stuck on herself.
Tell me about it.
She's on top of the ranking board, but it's beginning to eat away at her, I can tell.
She's getting all prissy and up in her head about it.
And, jeez, she really has it out for you.
Everyone thinks so.
Probably because she thinks you're her biggest threat.
You're turning into Jordan the Amazo.
[giggles.]
And Payson, well, let's be honest she's not a threat to anyone.
Um, the bunny and I are going out for some air.
- Oh.
Can I come with? - No.
- Oh.
[nervous chuckle.]
- [door closes.]
[up-tempo music.]
[crowd cheering.]
[Austin.]
I held my iron cross for like an eternity today.
It was awesome.
Feel that.
- [Kaylie.]
Oh, pure iron, baby.
- [Austin grunts.]
And I'm gonna turn that iron into gold in London.
I know you will.
So, we've got two days until Eliminations.
My rings are solid.
I know my coach is gonna want to show that off to the NGO.
The only thing that needs work is my floor but I can have that world class just in time to shine.
I'm getting nervous.
Don't be.
Everything's falling into place just like it did four years ago.
And I'm not the only one who thinks so, a rep from Puma called me today.
What'd they say? We're playing phone tag.
But they wouldn't call me unless they thought I was going to medal in London.
- That's awesome! - [siren approaching.]
What's up with that? What's wrong? Is everybody OK? Everybody's fine.
- Where was the fire, captain? - It's a false alarm.
Looks like a malfunction in the system tripped the sprinklers in that one pod.
Weird.
I was just sitting there, reading and all of a sudden it just started raining.
Inside the room! It's soaked up there.
You got big time water damage, plus someone's gonna have to come in and check the sensors in that pod.
So, you're gonna have to move the girls out.
Excuse me.
Maybe we could move in with Payson and Kaylie.
Good call.
Wendy, you'll move in with Payson Jordan, you'll move in with Kaylie.
You got a problem with that, Randall? No, sir.
I tried to see Lauren, but she wouldn't even let me up.
I guess she's still mad at me.
She's, uh, pretty overwhelmed right now.
You gotta understand what this has cost her.
She's been forced to give up a dream she's had her whole life.
Listen, Mr.
Tanner, I'm so, so sorry.
And I know that Lauren hates me so much right now and Thank you, Payson.
Thank you? You saved my daughter's life.
And I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am.
I know this hasn't been easy for you.
Lauren's only out of the program pending disability.
Are they sure she can't come back to training in time to make the team? When I injured my back, everyone said there was no way I would ever come back to the sport.
I appreciate your concern, but this is different.
Lauren can't possibly recover from this kind of surgery in time for the Olympics.
There has to be another option.
[sighs.]
The only other option is a new, noninvasive procedure with a man named Dr.
Kevin Walker Well, we should call him.
The sooner we talk to him, the sooner I have talked to Dr.
Walker.
Just trust me.
This procedure will not work for Lauren.
- Why? - Because she's an athlete.
Because she's an athlete? Dr.
Walker will not perform his procedure on a professional athlete due to differences in the heart brought on by the stress of competitive training.
But that should just make her healthier.
It makes her different.
Believe me, I wanted him to say that he could help her too but he can't.
That's the way it is.
We have to accept the situation.
- [sighs.]
- Look, I know it's weird, but we can't share a room and never speak.
We don't have to play nice, Kaylie.
It's too exhausting.
OK? We hate one another.
That's the way it is.
[Kaylie.]
Is that a rodent you're bringing in to live with us? It's a rabbit.
Do you have a problem with that, Cruella De Vil? [knocking.]
Hey there, munchkin.
I thought a visit from an old friend might brighten your day.
It's Jojo! Ah, come on, you must remember him, he was your favorite for ever.
Nice try, but an old stuffed sock isn't going to change anything, Dad.
Well, I sort of figured that, so I brought someone else along to lift your spirits.
Hello, Lauren.
Last time we emailed, you were in Florida? I'm still there.
When your dad told me what was going on with you, I came as quick as I could.
Had to come see the pathetic little invalid girl? - You are not an invalid.
- Might as well be.
I know something that can help.
I just I don't feel like praying, Summer.
I just I don't.
I'm sorry, it just I guess you came all this way for nothing.
I hope you don't mind coming down here, I just don't want anyone else to know about this yet.
Oh, it's cool.
I really don't want to be back in the room - with Jordan, anyway.
- [chuckles.]
OK, so, what exactly is it that we're supposed to be looking for? Dr.
Walker is known for his groundbreaking techniques.
He's a total outside-of-the-box thinker.
So, why wouldn't he want to go outside the box and try this procedure on a new kind of patient? But didn't Mr.
Tanner say they tried? Just not hard enough.
He's got to hear it from a gymnast, from someone who knows what it's like to lose everything.
It's just so weird that being an athlete is what's keeping Lauren from being an Olympian.
I think I can convince him to try this procedure on Lauren.
Wait.
But I think I got something.
It's an article.
Um, Dr.
Walker on Medicine and Meditation.
Ah, bingo! It says he goes on an annual retreat around this time of year.
They said he was on vacation when I called his office.
"The full media cleanse Walker indulges in at the retreat enables him to do the work that has made him the top in his field.
" - Well, that's that.
- Why? Dr.
Walker isn't gonna be reading any emails.
It says here they don't allow any form of communication technology in the retreat.
- The retreat is in the hills near Santa Fe.
- Yeah.
That's, like, three and a half hours away.
- It's a sign.
- A sign of what? I have to go there.
I have to find Dr.
Walker.
[rock music.]
First off, your performance since you've been here is beyond what I even thought was possible.
Well, I told you, this is where I belong.
Individually you're outstanding.
But that's not the issue.
This is your profile from our sports psychologist.
"Jordan's largest challenge is in the area of social interaction.
" OK, but if I'm already achieving my goals then why do I need to change anything? Because I'm building a gold medal team.
A lone wolf never wins gold, Jordan.
I put you in the same room with Kaylie because I sense some major tension there.
It's time to work it out and join the pack.
Coach wanted me to pull the iron cross from my routine.
[scoffs.]
I said no way.
You slipped out of it and messed up your shoulder.
You're lucky you don't have a tear.
I just pulled a muscle.
I'm not losing that iron cross.
It's bad enough I slipped off the rings in front of my coach and the whole team.
I nix that move and I look like a wuss.
- [whimpers.]
- Sorry, sorry.
If I adjust my floor routine to reduce impact, I can save my shoulder for the cross.
That's pure Tucker flash, Kaylie, I'm not losing that move.
But you don't want to risk your career on one trick.
Perception is everything, you know that.
When you're the oldest guy on the team, you can't look weak.
OK, that's not even possible.
But I have an idea.
Why dot you come by the women's gym tonight? I can take a look at your floor routine and help you adjust it.
You can figure it out away from your coach and the rest of the team.
Sounds like a plan.
What would I do without you? Luckily, you'll never have to figure that out.
So Coach is letting me out because he thinks I have a Healthy Bar promotional.
So that's the story.
OK, I'll cover for you with the new roomies, but I really wish I was going.
Me too.
I need you here and so does Austin to help with his Eliminations.
'Sup, ladies.
Thank you so much for doing this.
Yeah, I hate the idea of having to go on a roadie with you, Payson.
Sucks.
See you later.
You're right.
We can't live together and not talk to each other.
And you're right.
We can't pretend we're not mad at each other either.
Then I guess we gotta get into it.
I thought we were best friends back at camp.
Then all of a sudden, Coach Keegan started treating you as his pet and you kicked me to the curb.
Leave Keegan out of this.
- Why? Because you know it's true.
- What? I thought I could trust you.
Then Keegan starting treating you like his favorite.
Your gymnastics took off and you left me in the dust because you wanted to keep Keegan for yourself.
- You hurt me, Jordan.
- No, you hurt me.
I hurt you? We had one stupid argument about whether or not you could come with me and the coach to get some ice cream and then, bam, you ran home to Boulder - and never looked back.
- That is not what happened.
Oh, it's not? You had your dad buy you a gym and a coach just so you would never have to see me again.
You didn't even say a word to me after I won Junior Nationals.
- I didn't know you wanted me to.
- Well, I did! Look, I'm not the best at showing people I need them because nobody ever seems to need me.
I never saw it that way.
I should've known you weren't the mole.
You tell it like it is.
You can be a pain in the butt, but you're not a sneak.
That is not your style.
Thanks.
I want you to know that you can trust me.
- Really? - Mm-hm.
Because I need somebody I can trust right now, big time.
Payson went on a road trip with Rigo and I told her I would cover for her until she got back.
They went to find a doctor for Lauren.
But Wendy the blabbermouth can not find out about this.
If she tells Mclntire, Payson could be in big trouble.
I could use a partner in crime.
- [door opens.]
- Hey, roomies.
Look No, I I wouldn't I wouldn't go in there if I were you, 'cause Payson is totally sick.
Yeah.
Yeah, um, she wanted to get plenty of rest so that she'll be better for her Healthy Bar event tomorrow.
Yeah, we're gonna get out of here so she can have some peace and quiet.
[whispering.]
Gotcha.
We should let her get some rest.
- Yeah.
So - Yeah.
- Bye.
- [giggles.]
OK, so, um, I'll just sleep in Payson's bed tonight, under the blanket, so I just won't come out from under the covers until she's gone.
- Thank you.
- Mm-hm.
No biggie.
[Lauren.]
You might as well go back to Miami.
I know I'm no fun to be around.
I'm not going anywhere, Lauren.
But maybe it would be good for you to get out of this room for a bit.
We could go take a walk.
What? So you can trick me into going to the chapel? I don't want to trick you into anything, Lauren but I know you could only benefit by asking God to help you with this.
I'm through asking God for things.
Don't say that.
Why? Why should I bother? I asked for my mom to come back she's gone forever.
I asked for you to marry my dad.
[chuckles.]
That didn't happen.
And I've prayed to be an Olympian since I was six years old and this is how I ended up.
It doesn't work that way, Lauren.
God's not Santa Claus.
I'm tired of praying to a God who never answers.
"No" is an answer too.
Please.
Just leave me alone.
I start my final run with a round-off back handspring, whip into a two-and-a-half twist.
So I'm thinking I can change that to a round-off, one-and-a-half punch front full.
Which will be easier on my shoulder.
What's the difference in DODs? The degree of difficulty is the same.
- Oh.
- But the two-and-a-half is a lot flashier.
But you want to preserve your iron cross, right? Pure Tucker flash.
Strain your shoulder doing the two-and-a-half and you could ruin the best trick you have.
Then there's my answer.
I'll do the one and a half.
All right, Tucker.
Let's see it.
Gold Medalist Austin Tucker takes the floor and the crowd goes wild! Nice.
You're gonna nail it tomorrow.
There's something I want to give you.
To inspire you.
It's a page from my journal.
[Austin.]
"I told Austin I loved him today.
I thought it was going to be scary, but it was wonderful.
Just like him!" I love you too, Kaylie Cruz.
And there's nothing scary about that.
[motorcycle revving.]
So it looks like the retreat is about an hour away.
So in the a.
m.
we get up We go to the camp and find Dr.
Walker.
So, how exactly are you planning on changing his mind? I don't know.
I just think if he's known for pioneering surgical techniques to help people, how can he draw the line at athletes? He has to say yes.
How could anyone say no to you? Ahh, you are freezing.
Here, let me go get you my jacket, it's warmer.
No, no, 'cause then you'll be freezing.
I'll be fine as once I get in the sleeping bag.
Yeah, I was thinking, what if we zipped our two sleeping bags together and then made one big one.
That way we Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a minute, mister.
We're not on a pleasure trip.
We're on a mission of mercy.
Look, I promise to be on my best behavior.
But if it makes you uncomfortable with our shared sleeping arrangements, I understand.
It's not that I don't want to.
It's just that I - I'm a - Oh.
You're a I'm a virgin.
Yeah.
I respect that.
I sort of made this promise to myself a long time ago that I would wait until Till we got married.
Uh, I mean you.
Till you got married? - Uh.
- Not exactly.
I made a promise that I would wait until I won the gold.
Well, I think that's really cool.
That means you take sex seriously.
And I mean, no one takes it seriously anymore.
Sex should be safe and loving and definitely something you both agree on.
And if it makes you more comfortable, I am more than willing to let you have that tent tonight to yourself.
Don't be ridiculous, it's like ice out here.
I would be honored not only to share the tent with you, but also our sleeping bag.
Hm.
[giggles.]
[groans.]
- Morning.
- Morning.
How did you sleep? Perfectly.
But you do snore just a little bit.
So I've been told.
By my roommates, OK? So, ready to get back out on the road, find the miracle man? Yeah, I just don't know what I'm gonna say to him once we find him.
You'll get through to him, I have faith in you.
But I want him to have faith in himself.
That he can do this.
Then, that's what you say.
[Wendy.]
Pay-Pay? Payson, how are you feeling? [groaning.]
Still sick, huh? Too bad you're gonna show up to your Healthy Bar thing totally barfo.
But you'll rock it to the max because you're Payson the Amazo.
[giggles, sighs.]
You're, like, totally going to London.
But Jordan? Totes wacko.
Poor thing, she's definitely gonna flame out.
Let's be honest.
She's just Coach Mclntire's charity case.
Anyway, Pay-Pay, feel better! - Here you go.
- Thanks.
Lauren's in a very dark place, Steve.
She feels like God's turned his back on her.
I hope you told her that wasn't true.
Well, I tried but, she couldn't hear it from me.
But you've shared her Olympic dreams, Steve.
That's why she needs to hear you say it's going to be OK.
I've spent so many years building our lives around her dreams of winning gold.
How do I tell her that doesn't matter anymore? - You nailed it? - Of course.
- Yes! - [laughs.]
My floor was flawless with that one and a half.
Clean and mean from start to finish, and they didn't even ask to see my rings.
Why should they? They know Austin Tucker is King of the Rings.
- And a Puma rep just called - With an offer? They have their eye on a Tucker-Cruz golden couple thing - What? - but I told them I don't mix business with pleasure.
They'll need to take a number anyway.
After London I'll be writing my own ticket.
When does the list go up? I'm ready for an official celebration.
Four p.
m.
sharp.
Oh, OK, I gotta get back to work.
But I'll be waiting for you outside the men's gym.
Bye.
[monitor beeping.]
Jake? What are you doing here? This some horrible nightmare? I heard you were having surgery and I thought you could use some luck.
If that is a giant Barbie in a hospital gown, I will call security.
I'm not in the mood.
Really! You're giving Otis to me.
Not for keeps.
Just one head rub and he's back home with the wrestlers where he belongs.
And you're welcome.
But if a bunch of crazy gymnasts pop out and try to steal him I swear I will take the whole squad down.
Don't call us a squad, we're not cheerleaders.
Take your rub, gym-bot, before I change my mind.
Welcome.
Do you have a reservation? No, I just need to speak to one of your guests.
A Dr.
Walker? I'm sorry, but that is not possible.
Oh, well then he is here! Listen, I know that this is a spiritual place and I promise this will only take a second.
The people who come here make a significant time and financial investment to be protected from the outside world.
But couldn't you just call his room and tell him he has a visitor? First, there are no rooms.
The guests sleep in yurts.
Second, there are no phones on the grounds.
We don't even allow private computers or cell phones on the premises.
And there are no visitors accepted under any circumstances.
She just needs a second.
Even if I could let you in, you couldn't talk to him.
There is no speaking inside this gate.
We get it.
You want silence or whatever.
But we've come so far! I did not come this far to be turned away.
And if he says no, we're gonna burn the place down.
- He is not going to say no.
- I hope you're right.
I know I'm right.
You ready? Aye-aye, Commander Payson.
OK, so just keep your hands on the wall just like I showed you.
Make sure to keep your back flat so you absorb the impact with your thighs.
[ Ben Rector: "You And Me".]
This is insane, you know that? Uh-huh.
Ready.
Set It's been a real long time since I seen you girl It's been a real long time in another world Well I got scars to prove that I don't need you But the heart knows that I always do 'Cause you and me Could never be We're forever leaving You and me You know I love you unconditionally, right? I know, Daddy.
But I want you to be proud of me.
I am proud of you, Lauren.
And nothing's gonna change that.
How is it possible to be proud of me if I lose everything we fought so hard for? You didn't lose anything.
In my book you're becoming a bigger winner than ever.
And you don't need the Olympics to earn my love and respect.
I have always loved you and I always will.
[gasps.]
I just feel like I'm letting you down.
And I know it's not my fault but it just feels like it is.
This is This is nobody's fault.
It's just how life is sometimes.
It It knocks you back on your heels, and you you just gotta keep on fighting.
And I I know we're gonna We're gonna get through this and be the better for it.
I have no doubt about that because we're in this together, honey, just like everything else we've come through.
Hey.
Who are we? Team Tanner.
That's right.
And Team Tanner isn't going anywhere.
We'll just We'll just find a new adventure.
I love you, Dad.
Dr.
Walker? I know you're here for peace and I don't mean to disturb that for you but my friend, Lauren Tanner, desperately needs your help.
She's scheduled for open heart surgery tomorrow, which would ruin her chances of going to the Olympics.
I know you said that she's not a candidate for your procedure, but I also know that you've never tried your procedure on an athlete.
So, how can you be so sure that it won't work? I'm begging you.
Please, please just come examine her.
It would be a life-changer for her.
Please.
You have no idea what you're talking about.
This is uncharted territory.
An athlete's heart is very different from a normal heart.
How can it be that different? The constant stress on the cardio vascular system generally causes an enlarging of the left ventricular wall of the heart.
That means, as an athlete, your friend is at risk for all kinds of complications.
I know you want her to be well, clearly, there's absolutely no guarantee this procedure will work for her.
Then there's no guarantee that it won't work for her.
What's so bad about expanding your pool of candidates? Are you that concerned with ruining your average? 'Cause that doesn't sound very doctor-ly.
My reputation and her life are at stake.
It's just not worth the risk involved.
I'm sorry, but my answer is no.
I read all about you on the Internet and you seemed like such an amazing, amazing man.
And maybe you are.
But I just thought that you would be braver.
Apparently, I have more faith in you than you have in yourself.
[man.]
I'll have to ask you to leave now.
I need you to help me find a way to accept this.
[chuckles, sniffs.]
I can't believe he said no.
But he did.
I'm just lucky I didn't get arrested for trespassing.
You know, when you were inside the retreat, I kept looking at the sign over the entrance.
It said, "In the silence, the universe answers.
" And the universe answered "no".
Maybe the answer is that things don't always work out the way we want them to.
But we have to trust that everything is going to be OK in the end.
I'd like to think that.
It's just It's hard, you know? I stink.
Are you kidding? You're wonderful.
No, I mean like literally.
We've been traveling for over 24 hours, so I gotta go to my room and clean up.
All right, I'll see ya later.
Mm.
- [door opens.]
- He's a good guy.
- [door closes.]
- He's perfect.
So? Last night? Alone in the tent? Anything happen? Yes.
You did the deed!? No.
I fell in love.
He was such a gentleman, it was so romantic.
- I wish we had.
- He still has the tent.
- [laughing.]
- [knocking.]
Mr.
Tanner.
Hey, Payson.
Hi, Kaylie.
I, uh, just came by to see if you were free to come to the med center.
Lauren would really like to see you.
Austin? What happened? I'm out, Kaylie.
What? I I don't I don't believe that.
Believe it.
I'm off the team.
I took your advice and now I'm out.
How could I make the team with a one-and-a-half in that run? - You said it looked great.
- It did.
I swear.
Probably because it's beneath every other guy here.
I came off looking old and pathetic.
And they didn't even ask to see my rings.
All that work protecting my best trick.
They didn't even see it.
So, London? Out.
My chance at a second gold medal? Gone.
I was banking everything on that and now, thanks to you, I've lost everything.
Austin.
Don't say that.
I've only tried to support you.
You've done nothing but drag me down ever since I freaking fell for you and lost myself.
- That's not true.
- Our whole thing, Kaylie.
It's ruined my focus.
Seriously.
It's obviously why I couldn't train hard enough to get to London.
How can you blame this on me? Because I had my life together before you.
But now, I don't even know who I am.
I had major endorsements.
Now, nobody even wants to do business with me unless I can get them a meeting with you.
Guess what? I have no interest in being Mr.
Kaylie Cruz.
[door opens.]
O.
M.
G.
[giggles.]
I was just going over to go see the men's Elimination results.
You know, kinda play cheerleaders for the winners.
- And there they were.
- Who? Austin and Kaylie.
I couldn't help overhearing.
He didn't make the cut and then he totally blamed her.
Isn't that tragic? This is the kind of thing that jacks your focus, big time.
Good thing we don't have any boyfriends to mess with our heads.
Boys are just gold blockers.
[sighs.]
Poor Kaylie, I'm so-o-o-o worried about her.
- She's totally gonna - Stop! You gotta quit talking smack, Wendy.
'Cause pretty soon it's gonna get around that you slam everyone behind their backs and no one's gonna trust you.
No one is going to London alone.
OK? We're all part of a team, so stop acting like a punk and grow up already.
Damn.
Hey.
I wanted to come visit but I know.
I've been a jerk.
No.
No, you're dealing with a lot.
But I took it out on you and that was wrong.
I blamed you unfairly, Pay.
