Nancy Drew (2019) s03e04 Episode Script

The Demon of Piper Beach

1 Nancy, are you all right? Yeah.
Sorry.
I'm just really tired.
Well, if you weren't, I'd be worried.
You came face-to-face with a serial killer yesterday, and you've been here all night giving a statement.
They said that you wanted to talk to me.
I can't stop thinking about the last thing Trott said to me.
I'm a part of something much bigger.
You'll never understand.
"I'm a part of something much bigger".
I mean, that has to mean something.
Don't let him get into your head.
You put a killer behind bars.
You did something extraordinary.
Okay.
Hey, I, um Uh, I was hoping to-to check in with Agent Park? Oh, uh, he's still in Portland doing the transfer paperwork.
Oh.
Um Thank you.
Yes, it is a problem.
A big problem.
Look at this.
How are my customers supposed to eat at that table with a bike there? It's an eyesore, and it's costing me money every minute.
And I know it has something to do with that youth whatever across the street.
I know the owner of the Youth Center.
And as the community liaison, I can talk to him about giving your café a little more Respect? Space.
And don't forget to talk to him about the loitering, as well.
- Yep.
Got it.
- Thank you.
- I'm on it.
I'll see you later.
- Great.
Oh, whee! Something smells amazing.
Ah, ah, ah, ah.
- I have a working lunch.
- A working lunch - that, what, requires your famous pasta primavera? - Yes.
Uh-huh.
- Wait.
- What are ? Are you Are you wearing aftershave? Okay.
Okay, what exactly are you working on? You should be working on the chore wheel.
I believe you have trash duty.
Uh, floors, and they're swept.
Check it.
Now you can tell Nancy that I'm getting better at what she assigned me.
Actually, how about you tell her yourself over at the Youth Center.
It's the grand opening.
Go support Nick, and then you and Nancy can come back at 2:00 p.
m.
or anytime after 2:00.
Hello.
Hello.
Working lunch? Yeah.
- Come in.
Please.
- Okay.
This round, I'm taking my time Taking my time, taking my time, yeah Take charge, yeah, I'm repping my style Repping my style, repping my style, yeah Feel woozy from head to toe Letting everyone know I'm a rebel and a fighter This time, I'm taking my time Taking my time, taking my time, yeah So, hold on You guys good? Uh, you-you you need anything, or ? Unbelievable.
Yeah, I know, I know.
Okay? I'll stop being a helicopter.
It's just, you know, it's first-day nerves.
No.
No, not you.
This.
Is that ? My biological father sending me a random friend request? Yeah, it-it sure is.
But you haven't spoken to him in, what, 17 years? Yeah, which is why I should probably expect a random friend request from, what, Jesse's dad or-or Ted's next? I mean, where does this madness end? Okay, okay.
You want to talk about it? I just did.
My mom sends her regards.
Where is everyone? Did I get the date wrong? Thought today was opening day.
Oh, no.
It is.
Okay, snacks, right? You know, just in case.
I mean, no pressure.
So, hold on Things are moving I know These are solid.
They're kosher, too.
Ooh, it's time to open up The Claw.
- You're driving.
Come on.
- Okay.
- Hey.
- Yeah.
Congrats.
This is great.
Thank you.
Thank you.
- See you.
- Happy opening day! - Thanks.
- Uh, quick question.
Have you considered getting a bike rack out front? There's been a complaint from the owner of the café across the street.
- Jake says he's losing business.
- Oh, wow.
This place looks amazing.
- Thank you.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- What are you doing here? What am I doing? I'm here to support Nick, hang out with you.
You know, spend some time with my daughter outside of the house, right? At least until 2:00 p.
m.
That's specific.
Oh, wow.
Those Ace's mom's cookies? Solid.
- What's up, you guys? Mmm.
- Actually, I do need a little help with their paperwork - if you don't mind.
- No, not at all.
I am in as long as there's caffeine 'cause I've been up since yesterday.
- Hey, Nick? - Yeah.
Um, someone defaced the bathroom with some odd graffiti.
Also, the lights don't work.
- Oh.
- Yeah.
Okay.
Well, I'll clean it up.
And then I'll, uh, have a talk with the kids about, uh, creative outlets, right? Bet I can make it a-a learning opportunity.
- Love it.
Yes.
Yeah.
- Right? Yeah.
Oh.
It's completely shameless.
I don't know.
I think Jake's being a little sensitive.
It's a public sidewalk.
- People can park their bikes.
- Hello? I meant this friend request.
I don't get it.
Why now? This sperm donor has never tried to have a relationship with me before.
Is there any chance that your dad found out - about your upcoming nuptials? - No.
Victoria would never tell him anything, and I haven't posted anything online.
I Oh, the Fan Fan website.
Ted.
Ted blogged about the proposal.
Is nothing sacred anymore? Ooh.
- Can I have one of these? Sure could use a sugar hit.
- Oh.
Oh, you know what? I was gonna drop these off for someone.
But But what? But the chocolate melted.
Yeah.
It's gross.
You don't want to eat them.
Get you a granola bar.
Gross.
We still don't know anything more than what your client has told us: that the tags are codes for time and location of meeting place.
Okay.
And, um You haven't been able to figure out what the meetings are about? Uh, I mean, we think it's drug deals.
Now that your client has gone AWOL after talks of possible immunity I've left Asher a number of messages telling him how detrimental his actions were.
I haven't been able to track him down.
Yet.
Well, I think we found out where he was the night we were supposed to meet.
So, Asher was caught on camera walking into an old cannery, uh, two nights ago.
Problem is he walked in, but he never came out.
Building's empty now.
And this is the - security footage? - Yeah.
It's a-a five-block radius of the cannery, uh, the night he went missing.
Okay.
So, I've been meaning to scan through all of this stuff myself, but now that I've been pulled to the Trott case, - I could really use a second pair of eyes? - Of course.
I can take a look.
- Perfect.
- See if I spot any of Asher's known associates.
Amazing.
Oh, my God.
- Thanks.
- Hmm.
First the lights and now I'm a part of something much bigger.
You'll never understand.
What the hell? What is your problem? You just stole that woman's coffee and threw it at my head.
Oh, no.
I'm, um, I'm so sorry.
I, uh, I don't know how I got here, and I've been sleepwalking.
Look, we all have crazy dreams, but you know what we're not doing? Throwing beverages at people, okay? Leave.
Now.
Sorry.
See? Better than drawing on the bathroom wall, right? I just had my second nightmare of the day.
While seeing that exact image.
First at the station, and then five minutes ago at Jake's Café.
I see it in my dreams, too.
It's scary, but drawing it makes me feel better.
And sorry about painting your bathroom.
Hey, it's all good.
Mistakes happen, huh? Hey, buddy.
How long you been seeing that weird shape? Okay.
It cannot be a coincidence that four people are hallucinating the same thing.
Yeah, in their dreams.
Uh, you know, I was thinking We should call Hannah.
See if she knows anything.
Hello? Uh, you know I've been watching over the Historical Society while Hannah is away.
I can just dash over there and find out everything I can about the silhouette from your nightmares.
You are welcome.
Ace! What are you doing? What is this? That's something I just hallucinated.
Any guesses as to why I'm hallucinating the same thing the Youth Center kids are drawing? Well, it's the same thing I just saw.
Before he went sleepwalking.
Hey.
Kwame and Talia just told me that they started having nightmares about that thing three days ago.
They-they keep calling it the Sandman.
Yeah, Bess said she found something.
She wants us to meet up with her.
Um, Ryan, can you hold down the fort? Appreciate it.
No, wait, I-I don't r Uh, any Who wants more cookies? It's not just happening to Ace and Nancy.
Half dozen accounts are tweeting about sleepwalking in Horseshoe Bay.
Look.
I recognize these names.
Yeah, these guys were a year below me and George.
This girl was in Ace's class, I think.
Uh, so, the-the haunting is escalating.
It went from children's nightmares to To do what? Gain strength? - When it's strong enough, it - It jumps to teens.
New food group.
And now that it's stronger, it's affecting them differently, - making them sleepwalk.
- Into danger.
Has anyone ever seen the silhouette before? Yes.
So, I have here So, the Indigenous artisans drew the image on pottery that they would then fill with sand from Piper Beach.
These-these pots acted as dream catchers.
Piper Beach? Like we do every year at the town carnival? What's this got to do with the town carnival? The carnival has an opening ceremony where families go down to Piper Beach and collect sand.
Yeah.
That you decorate at the arts and crafts booth.
You just make little jars of sand.
I used to dye my sand black.
Almost every kid in Horseshoe Bay has one by their bed.
Except for this year because three days ago, Matthew Burke's corpse stopped the carnival from opening.
Y'all have some crazy rituals.
- Well, just wait till next month.
- What happens next month? You'll see.
Hold on, when-when did the town carnival start? So, I think Yeah, here.
So, in the autumn of 1835, 22 adults from Horseshoe Bay disappeared from their homes in the middle of the night.
And then most of their bodies were found weeks later, washed up onshore.
Old-timey sleepwalking that led to the founding - of the town carnival.
- Okay.
So, all we have to do is get some sand from Piper Beach, make dream catchers, and then we can hand them out - to the locals tomorrow morning.
- I don't know.
Three days ago was a full moon, and we know that, uh, the lunar cycle - plays a huge role in rituals, so - Well, you might be right, but are we supposed to wait until the next full moon to find out? Because people are sleepwalking, and somebody's gonna get into some serious trouble if we don't stop this now, so I'm making the call.
We're going to Piper Beach.
Just Hey.
You made primavera? I did.
What was the occasion? No occasion.
Just Delicious.
- How was your day? - Good.
Boring.
How was your day? Uh, good.
I gave my statement to the D.
A.
this morning about Trott.
I thought I might've missed something, but the D.
A.
said that I was overthinking it.
You? Never.
D.
A.
Jean Rosario.
Yeah.
I heard she was prosecuting Trott.
- Mm.
- You look exhausted.
You should get some rest.
Mm.
If I didn't say so earlier, I am so proud of you.
You created a safe space for kids.
And you know what? - What? - I bet you - those three kids - Mm-hmm.
- are gonna go tell all their friends.
- Mm-hmm.
And then five whole kids - are gonna be at the Youth Center tomorrow.
- Oh, man, five? - Five.
- How will I manage five kids? I mean, I can help you.
Yeah? Sweet wine Ace, what are you doing here? I almost died today.
And, uh, I know that I've had close calls before, but this was different because I'm not afraid anymore.
Not afraid of what? Dying? My body Doing this.
Shakes As you take your bow Unbind these tied hands Watch me hit the ground Crash down, crash down, down Can you feel it now? I'm a part of something much bigger.
You'll never understand.
And then I'll ask, "Does anyone object to this union? Speak now or forever hold your peace".
Why would anyone want to marry you? I didn't even want to stick around to raise you.
Nick is only doing this because you're going to die soon.
Shut up, Dad! Just shut up! The Women in White.
Love blinds No.
Please! No.
No, wait.
Wait! Please! I'm supposed to be here! Please! Like a waterfall Crash down This was all for nothing.
Can you feel it now? Crash down Hey! Someone! Anyone! - Hey, help! Let me out! - Crash down, down Crash down Hey.
Hey.
Oh.
Like a waterfall Did I do this? Can you feel it? Can you feel it? Oh, my God.
Ace? Nick.
Wake up.
Nick! Nick! Oh! Nancy? Everyone answered except for you.
You doused yourself in acetone.
We all tried to get ourselves killed.
It's getting worse.
More people are tweeting about sleepwalking.
Someone's in the hospital.
A broken arm.
H-How are you so awake right now? Adrenaline.
I feel like I could run a marathon.
Ah.
And some of these sleepwalkers are older than we are.
And the sleepwalking events are getting worse.
The Sandman wants to hurt us, which means if we don't stop this soon, every adult in town, whatever their age, is gonna start sleepwalking to their deaths.
Okay.
So, what do we do? Do we keep everybody awake until the next full moon and then do the sand ritual then? For us, coffee, at least.
Anything to stop me from having that nightmare again.
I mean, I-I was just facing the ultimate villain.
Just a random figment of my imagination.
- Hey, what was your, um, dream about? - I, uh hurt somebody.
- What about yours? - Uh I just, uh I think my subconscious was trying to tell me there are instincts that I haven't followed.
About Trott.
Okay, I feel like I saw something in the Women in White's journal a-about a sleep charm.
Maybe-maybe Temperance - could - No.
No.
If you ask Temperance for help, it's gonna be a price.
She only does something if it's gonna benefit her.
Okay.
So, what if it benefits us, too? Yeah, for all we know, Temperance could be behind what's happening.
Uh, well, she's not that bad of a person.
- Oh, please.
You don't even know her.
- Yes, - I do, actually.
- Okay.
I've been visiting Temperance a little bit.
You what? Over the past few days.
Why? She's not your friend, Bess.
Don't let her fool you.
At least Temperance takes me seriously and doesn't dismiss my ideas and opinions.
She's even helping me become a Woman in White.
Those don't exist anymore.
Yeah, Bess, that's like me saying I want to become a Pilgrim.
Like You know what? Forget it.
You know what? You're too busy making the calls to listen to anyone, anyway.
And you lot - Don't know why I even bother.
- Bess.
Okay.
So, all we need to do is figure out George.
Hey.
- and how to stop it.
- Stay with me.
Okay, we need to set alarms on our phones to stay awake.
And we should lock the doors in case we do fall asleep.
I can do you one better.
Dad's a cop.
Well, cool.
What do we think is crucial about Piper Beach with the dream catchers? I mean, there there appear to be a number of, uh, coastal tribes that dealt with sand rituals or-or stories about spirits made out of particles of sand.
I still feel like we're missing something.
What do you think, Ace? I'm part of something much bigger.
I'm part of something much bigger! Okay, just so you all know, you were wrong about Temperance.
She helped me find the sleep charm that Oh, dear.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Hey, Nancy? Nancy, can you hear me? You have to wake up! Oh, yes.
I am so sorry.
I just really need to know what you guys were up to before the handcuffs and the sleeping.
And I won't go through your texts.
Unless No, no, I promise.
I promise.
Okay.
Coastal tribes believed the entity was originally created from particles of sand at Piper Beach.
Hence the name, I suppose.
I'm not done with you yet.
I kicked you out of my car.
I'm not a part of your crimes.
You are now.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, my God.
The Sandman is getting stronger.
Ace, Ace, you need to wake up.
Ace.
Gosh, Ace, please.
Come on, Ryan.
Pick up the phone.
Oh, gosh.
George Li-Yun Fan also leaves behind her loving father, Edwin George Chen.
He was not a loving father! I would've been.
If you had let me.
But now it's too late.
Wait! Wait! What are you doing?! Stop! Stop, I'm not dead! Please! I can't move! I can't breathe! George! George, can you hear me? George, you need to wake up.
Please.
Nick! Kwame? Talia? - Nick! Help us! - Nick! Nick! - Please help us.
- Please! Hey, hang on.
I'm coming! Nick, hurry! We're scared.
Hang on! I'm coming! Bess! Hey.
I got here as soon as I could.
Oh, my God, Nancy.
- Nancy, you got to wake up.
- No, hey, they're trapped in their nightmares.
What the hell is going on here? The more power the Sandman gains, the thinner the veil between the dream world - and the real world becomes.
- What are you saying? If they get hurt or they die in their dreams, - they die in real life, too? - Technically, yes.
But it also means that if we can find a way to kill the Sandman in the dream world and the real world, then we can kill the Sandman forever.
Now, a new friend of mine helped me find this sleep charm, which allows the holder to go into anyone's dream.
I was hoping the group would help me find a way to use this against the Sandman, but they are otherwise occupied.
Okay, but you got me.
You got me.
We can do this, right? You and me? Okay.
Let me think.
Oh, wait.
Okay, Kwame.
Kwame told me that when-when he got attacked in his dream, he thought of a-a flamingo, and it-it appeared in his hand all of a sudden, so he used it as a baseball bat, and he he whacked the Sandman to the sun.
That was actually kind of cool, right? But my point is is that he killed the Sandman in his dream.
But not in the real world.
Although, if I perform the sleep charm and lucid dream, you know, to take control of what is happening in my dream, then I can save our people and manifest a way to kill the Sandman while the veil is still thin and then - and then destroy it forever.
- Yeah.
Wait, you lost me at "lucid".
It's an ancestral skill.
My friend says I'm up to the task.
Okay, so, she wrote down instructions for me.
"Envision it.
See it.
Create it.
Start with belief.
The rest will follow".
Okay.
Take George's crowbar to Piper Beach.
Plant it into the sand next to the twisted driftwood.
I'm gonna send you a photo of it.
It's where we collected the sand for the dream catchers.
Okay.
And the crowbar is gonna do what? Act as a lightning rod.
The Sandman was believed to have been created from the sand at Piper Beach.
Oh, hence the name.
That's tight.
- That's what I said! - Yeah! Anyway, we're gonna turn the Sandman's particles into glass using lightning.
I just wish I wasn't so wired so I could fall asleep.
Oh! Oh, wait.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Here.
Take these.
They're Melatonin gummies.
Yeah, Carson gave them to me.
He was trying to get me to not have late-night video games so I'd do more on my chore wheel, but you know what? I - Can you just go? - Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
For sure.
We got this.
Get on the Bess bus if you want to live, Nancy.
- Come on, Nancy! - Come on, Nancy, get on this bus.
Get on the bus, come on! - Come on! - Come on! Come on! Come on! Has anyone asked Bess how she's doing this? She seems focused.
Best not to disturb her.
Focused or angry? Focused and angry.
She's fangry.
- I can hear you.
- How? It's my dream.
I can do whatever I want.
And know what? You're all really loud whisperers, by the way.
I've been meaning to tell you that for a while, but didn't want to hurt your feelings 'cause I'm a nice person.
- And we love you for it.
- Oh, really? Now that I'm saving all your asses, you all love me.
But do you respect me? - Shouldn't you be - You know, Nancy, you're the hero of Horseshoe Bay.
You caught a freaking serial killer.
But even a hero misjudges sometimes.
Seriously, Bess, the road.
Also, I've been studying and researching and-and learning a lot, and that's why you're all not dead right now.
You're absolutely right.
Can I just Don't touch my wheel.
You people really have no imagination.
I've got this under control.
We're gonna end the Sandman, so buckle up.
- Th-There's no seat belts.
- Fine.
There are now.
Okay, then.
Come on, Bess.
Come on.
Follow me.
Now we lure it.
Not this time.
This is my dream.
Bess! Fix it, Dream Queen! - Come on, Bess! - Oh! - Bess! We're trapped! - Come on, Bess! - You can do it, Bess! Come on, Bess! - Come on, Bess! - Come on, you can do it! - You can do it! - Come on, Bess! Envision it.
See it.
Create it.
Now! Yes, Bess! Ow.
You okay? Does anybody remember where we put the key? Hey, Bess, you have every right to be angry with us.
Okay, I'm not angry.
I'm just disappointed and hurt.
You deserve more from your friends.
Yeah, w-we should have listened to you.
Especially me.
Hey, we're really sorry.
Do you think you can forgive us? Oh, that depends.
Are you all gonna stop underestimating my knowledge of the occult and supernatural and actually take my ideas and opinions seriously? As much as anyone else's, even Nancy's? - Of course.
100%.
- I'll think about it.
And respect my decision to assemble the next generation of Women in White.
I know in the past they stood for some not-so-great things, but at their core, the Women in White are about owning and-and harnessing their power.
That's what I believe my calling is, and that's what I intend to do.
Then that is what we will respect.
I mean, I don't know.
If she starts wearing buckled shoes, I'm playing the Pilgrim card.
- Oh, yada ya.
- Okay.
You're gonna be an amazing Woman in White.
Thank you.
Hey.
Nick, I, um, I forgot to give this back to you.
Why don't you hang on to it.
Kids said they really liked you.
They did? Why? Well, you were great with them.
Attentive, curious, uplifting.
They're thinking of me as a supervisor, but they see you as a peer.
In a good way.
You're from a very different background, but you know what it's like to not have a stable homelife.
These kids could really benefit from spending some time with you.
Maybe that could go both ways? They-they really said that they like me? I'll see you Monday, 9:00 a.
m.
Okay.
Hey, Jesse.
Thank you for taking Ted to her trumpet lesson.
Charlie is still at her sleepover, but Emma's mom said she'll bring her home after lunch.
I told Nick that I was running an errand, but it's something that I want to deal with by myself, so it's your job to sub in at The Claw.
I'll explain later, okay? You got this.
You got this.
All right, George.
Come on, girl.
You got ten years left to live.
It is time to face your demons.
Edwin George Chen.
Can we talk about this friend request? You want to tell me where you were all night? You want to tell me why the primavera you made yesterday was missing your usual measure of garlic? Garlic breath isn't great for business.
Are lunch dates with D.
A.
Rosario good for business? I could smell her perfume.
If you want to date somebody, you don't have to hide it from me.
Not like you could, anyway.
Just like I couldn't hide this from you.
I've been having nightmares about Trott.
He told me he's part of something much bigger, something I would never understand.
So, I've been looking at these articles going back to 2014.
And I just I can't figure it out.
What am I missing? Wh-Wh What is he a part of that I don't understand? Well Why don't we start with what you do understand.
Okay.
Um I know he has three fingers on one hand because of a self-inflicted accident.
I know his license plate number.
I know that he drives a van, which was probably used to transport Dustin Yates' body from the kill site to my car.
Which wouldn't be the first time that he used a van to dump a victim's body.
Look.
His tire tracks were found at every Frozen Heart crime scene.
Except the town carnival.
Trott couldn't have fit his van into the corn maze.
He would have had to carry Matthew Burke's body - into the maze.
- Which wouldn't fit his "in and out" M.
O.
Plus, Matthew Burke's heart was completely removed from his body, and Dustin's chest cavity still had remnants of his heart.
Two different M.
O.
s could mean Two different killers.
Trott said he was a part of something much bigger because he's not the only killer in Horseshoe Bay.
Be careful, please.
- Oh.
Hello.
- Hey.
- Wh-What are you doing here? - Oh.
I called him.
Oh, okay.
Bye.
Bye.
Can we wait Should have this depixelated and enhanced in about 43 seconds, give or take.
How are you not a tech billionaire? Who says I'm not? Finally What exactly are we looking for? Known associates of a client of mine.
D.
A.
thinks he got cold feet and took off before she could get him to turn state's evidence.
He was last seen walking into a cannery.
- The one on Harlowe Street? - Yeah.
Two nights ago.
- Where's your client now? - I wish I knew.
Asher's never gone M.
I.
A.
this long with me before.
I'm hoping this surveillance footage explains his disappearance.
I promised Jean I would take a look, see if I can find any faces or cars that might be able to point her in the right I can explain.
D.
A.
Rosario, Trott killed Dustin Yates but not Matthew Burke.
There has to be another killer.
I know.
Trott has been in custody ever since he was arrested in Portland.
Another murder was just reported with the same M.
O.
- Where did they find the body? - In front of Jake's Café.
