Desperate Measures

1
[tense music playing]
You know what the offer was.
This is the quickest end.
What are you thinking?
The reality of it is,
there's still gonna be a few losers here.
That we want you over here.
And you get to hold your team together.
- Look, here it is. Excuse me.
- The loyalty is not broken.
I am sitting in between
the two final teams.
There's a 50-50 shot to win this thing.
You don't think I know that you're trying
to cut the head off the snake?
I know you're trying
- to take their powerhouse away.
- We're just trying to play the game.
I will not leave
without winning this game.
But Amber, she deserves to win this too.
I think the debate is over.
The offer's here.
Amber and I are solid.
We understand that.
And that's the same thing we have here.
Today is the day, Jill.
- [Jill] I'm not leaving her.
- You're not leaving her?
- I'm not leaving her.
- All right.
Well, fair enough.
We'll see you guys in the end.
I will not be given ultimatums. Uh-uh.
- Okay.
- That's not a negotiation.
You tell me I have
to make a decision by your rules.
- Hey, it's fine. It's good.
- Yeah, it's okay.
I am an equal on this game board,
and you will not treat me
as some submissive little bitch.
- I mean
- [Paul] Good enough. Come on.
Well, the game is now unfriendly.
[Nick] I don't see how anyone
can like Amber that much.
- [Seth] She might be psycho.
- [Nick] She's psycho as [bleep].
[Paul] We had this conversation here.
- She was ready to drop Amber.
- [Nick] Yeah.
[Paul] "I'm coming."
And she knew it leaves Amber out.
"I'm coming."
[Nick] What magical thing
happened over there?
[Paul] I think she was full of shit
the whole time.
Crazy, dude.
[theme music playing]
[Justin] I'm here to play the game.
I'm here to win.
[atmospheric music playing]
So, I saw Paul and Seth.
And they came over and they were like,
"Hey, will you retrieve that arrow?"
And there was this note.
Whoa.
[Jill] And it basically just says,
"Jill, we want you. Let's end this today."
In all caps, underlined.
Money sign plus home.
Mm.
[Amber] They think that
they're still the strongest.
[Jill] They do.
As long as I'm here, obviously,
they can't win, and they know that.
So basically, they're like,
"They can't make it without you."
"You need to leave them,
and we'll end this."
And I lost it. On purpose.
It wasn't an emotional thing.
I did it on purpose.
Yeah.
I'm not paranoid,
but I don't trust people very easily.
I was like, "How dare you ask me
to leave my loyal alliance?"
- Yeah.
- What am I getting out of it?
They're like, "You're gonna get a win."
I was like, "Yeah, and your integrity
stays intact, and I look like shit."
- Yeah.
- I don't think so.
[Justin]
I'm not sure I believe Jill's story.
Is this really the first time she has
talked to Charlie about going over there?
I don't know.
I started to walk off.
They start yelling,
"No, come back. Come back here."
People could tell you one thing
and do another.
- [Amber] They were hoping
- That I would just abandon ship.
- To get an easy win and an easy out.
- Yeah, they're trying to almost cheat.
[Justin] You don't know
which way it's gonna go.
Guess we'll find out.
[Jill] They need more food than we do.
[Justin] They need more?
Three big men versus
a little man and Not literally.
I guess it is literal.
You're little, but not figuratively.
- [Justin] Mm-hmm.
- [Jill] There we go.
And two small women.
We do not need as much food as they do.
[Justin] No. I'm gonna go get a log.
I'll be back and get to work.
Stuff I need to get done today.
[Jill] This encounter
that took place with Charlie
has kind of brought me to a new reality.
I have to
I have to do this the hard way.
[Amber] Jill, this morning
I saw you talking to Charlie.
I got worried.
We've had a plan for three weeks.
And I think that what I just told you
should reveal to you
that I'm willing to put my life
on the line in this game for you.
I don't mean to sound hateful,
it's just from my heart.
I just proved, and I will prove to you.
I am 100%.
Don't [bleep] question my loyalty.
Okay?
Okay. I believe you.
I believe you.
You've always shown me your heart so far.
- [Jill] Stay to the plan.
- [Amber] Stay to the plan.
- [Jill] Stay with the plan.
- [Amber sighs]
[narrator] Across the river,
Charlie Team discusses Jill's decision
to remain with Alpha.
I'm mad at her stubborn ass.
[Seth] You know it was a morale boost
for them to see the flare for Angie.
[Paul]
She was full of shit the whole time.
Yep.
[Paul] The reason she wanted more time,
they were gonna try to scheme.
[Seth] Tell y'all now,
I ain't going nowhere.
- [Nick] Nope, absolutely not.
- [Paul] Me either.
We had a plan to bring Jill to this side
and end this thing.
I mean, we'll wait 'em out.
But I guess, um,
that's not gonna happen now.
[Seth] I mean, if y'all want,
we can reach out to Justin.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Seth] It'd be a slap in the face to her,
and it'd be more manpower for us.
We say, "Hey, we've been
talking to her for two weeks."
"We wanna give you the same offer."
She'd be so mad if we took Justin.
[wind howling]
[narrator] Meanwhile, across the Neka,
as Justin searches upriver
for dry firewood,
at Alpha Camp
[Jill] Wow.
Jill and Amber discover
their supply of fish
Oh man.
is disappearing faster than expected.
[Jill] I've noticed our fish stash,
it's dwindling
more than it should have been.
They're gone.
Don't know where they went.
[tense music plays]
[exhales]
Justin's been kinda
acting squirrelly lately.
Hunger does
some crazy stuff to you, right?
I think that Justin,
how he's been acting recently,
has not been the Justin
that we started this challenge with.
There's been times where he's been
kinda taking more than his share.
It's added to mistrust
between all of us and him.
Last night,
we had already eaten our dinner.
I said, "All of this fish is gonna
go into the game bag outside."
- Didn't get done ending that sentence.
- With the sentence.
He's like
And takes pieces off
and puts it, like, under his lap,
like a kid freaking trying
to sneak candy before dinner.
I'm just worried that this game
has broke Justin.
It was like this.
Yes! I'm like
- [laughs]
- What? What are you doing, bro? Why?
"We can see you!"
He is not the Justin
we started this game with.
Let's divide them up.
You take care of your own shit.
So that way, you're in charge
of your own portion control.
[Amber] Hey! Get outta there!
[narrator] With winter fast approaching,
protecting their food supply
There he is.
is just as important as rationing it.
[Jill] We are being invaded
by a herd of martens.
- [marten chittering]
- [Jill] I see you.
I'm playing this game to win.
- [marten chittering]
- [Jill] You little shit.
For us to make it to the end on this,
we have to protect everything.
[intense music plays]
Missed.
[marten chittering]
It smells like fish.
No wonder he was eating it.
- [chittering]
- [Jill] Hey! Get out of there!
[narrator] The sun sets on the players'
26th day in the wilderness,
once again bringing sub-freezing
temperatures to the island.
At first light at Alpha Camp,
Jill and Amber
embark on their morning forage
as Justin becomes the second player
for whom the recent bounty of fish
has carried unforeseen consequences.
[stomach rumbling]
[Justin grunts]
[grumble]
[farting]
[Justin, grunting] Well
I gotta take a crap.
So this morning, I felt nauseous.
I felt sick.
So, I just laid there, and I'm like,
"Well, maybe it's just temporary."
[Justin grunts]
[exhales]
- [grumble]
- [Justin moans]
Now, I think the salmon,
it's making me sick.
On both ends.
[grunts]
Day by day, each challenge is harder.
At first,
catching all those big coho salmon
after going hungry
for days and days and days,
it was just a huge blessing.
Felt a little sick last night.
That fish oil is causing my digestive
system to get all out of whack.
But now, not only is it starting
to make me sick,
it just hits you. It'll clean you out.
But unfortunately,
the tension is growing in Alpha Camp.
It just seems like something's up.
The girls are out foraging.
I was gonna go with 'em,
but nature was calling.
These girls, I don't know.
There's a lot of close talk
and whispering going on between them two.
I'm not paranoid, but it sounds
like they're talking behind my back.
We had an incident the other night
where they were whispering.
They think I want their fish,
or they're not rationing it enough.
I don't need to dip into theirs.
I don't want any of their stuff.
They feel like they can't trust me?
And I don't get why.
I don't even really want my stash.
[Jill] Just in case he is smart enough
to trail the bank
to listen in on conversations,
maybe we talk a little softer.
[narrator] 1,300 meters upstream
[Amber] I don't trust him with our food.
- I don't trust him at all.
- Nope. I don't trust his word anymore.
I never dreamed
that he would start stealing our food.
In the last week, there's been a lot
of things that have just been little finds
that Justin is not trustworthy.
As silly as this sounds,
last night, he farted.
And we started laughing, and we're like,
"Oh my God, that is rank."
And he goes, "That wasn't me."
Something is telling me
that I should worry about Justin.
So, he farted,
and instead of owning up to it,
he said it was from the day before.
- He goes, "From last night."
- "Trapped in my sleeping bag."
"It's trapped in my sleeping
bag from yesterday."
My gut never lies to me.
But I needed
I needed that ultimate proof.
So, I set him a test.
[Amber] Nothing better be touched
when we get back.
[Jill] I'll know.
I got mine booby trapped.
[Amber] So this morning Jill set a trap.
We went to go
for our little foraging walk.
She set up her bag
where she stashed her rations,
and she showed me the way that she
rolled it up with her gloves and her hat.
And to see if he was gonna
go through her bag.
So far, they've just been little lies
that maybe they don't mean anything.
Maybe he's telling the truth.
This morning, set a deliberate trap.
We'll see.
[tense music playing]
[narrator] Across the Neka
at Charlie Camp,
Seth and Paul prepare
to gather intel on Alpha
as they consider their team's next move.
[Seth] Wanna walk down to the point,
see if we can't find somebody?
[Paul] Let's start some shit.
Let's do it.
- [Paul] We need some intel on those guys.
- [Seth] Mm-hmm.
We made a trip
down to the point this morning,
just to do some observation
of Alpha's Camp
to gather information.
[Paul] Where's Justin?
And maybe, with any luck,
we get a good opportunity
to talk to Justin
about coming over to Charlie Team.
- [Seth] Right there, right there.
- [Paul] Yeah.
[Seth] Think he's trying
to fix their raft.
[narrator] Back at Alpha Camp,
as Charlie looks on,
Jill and Amber discover the tent
and Jill's carefully
arranged bag disturbed.
[Jill] I laid my gloves crisscross.
I'm telling you, a million percent,
I staged that bag.
When we got back,
the way it was folded over
was not even remotely close
to the way that we had left it.
You back me up
and you say, "I saw it too, Justin."
You wouldn't have left it
with it open like that.
This man that I trusted,
like so many others in my life,
has betrayed me.
- [Amber] Wanna wait for him to come up?
- [Jill] No. No.
We set a test for you,
and you failed, buddy.
- Dude.
- [Justin] What?
- [Jill] Can we not even leave camp now?
- Why?
I know you were in my bag.
- I wasn't in your bag.
- Yes, you were.
She had her bag a certain way.
We were out for five [bleep] minutes.
I didn't go through your stuff.
I moved stuff around, yes, but I didn't
go rummaging through any of your shit.
[chuckles]
You're a liar.
- Whatever.
- You're a liar.
They literally both blindsided me,
accusing me of things
that just aren't true.
[Justin] You think
I would go through your stuff?
- Are you kidding me?
- You did. We set it up.
You're accusing me of something
that only exists in your head.
You are looking at me
like as if I'm a threat.
- I'm trying to do every
- [Jill] We're not threatened by you.
- Worried.
- We worry we'll lose our rations
and you're gonna blow the game
for all three of us.
- You think I'm gonna take your food?
- Oh, yeah.
I don't want your food.
I don't even want to eat that fish.
Okay, you want me to tell you something?
I had [chuckles] I had an emergency.
I had to take a serious crap,
and I crapped my pants.
[scoffs]
I had to change my underwear.
They're hanging there.
- Okay.
- [Justin] Right there, look. Look!
Because I had a mother [bleep] accident,
I'm wearing Lee's underwear.
I knocked stuff around,
trying to get to the woods,
so I don't continue to crap my pants.
I was scrambling, and I saw
I knocked your hat and your gloves off.
I put 'em back. I don't know
how they were construed.
[Jill] With my background,
I understand that
you have to make
the most extreme story possible up
to cover your most extreme lies.
We cannot trust you.
- You lie, point-blank, to our face.
- No, I don't.
Did you fart last night?
Yeah. Well, once, yeah.
- Why did you lie about it?
- I didn't lie about it.
Last night you said it wasn't you!
I never said that.
[Amber] Starvation and exhaustion
impacts people differently.
It has been wearing on him.
- [Jill] Your lies do not make sense!
- I'm not lying.
Quit calling me a liar.
I'm not a liar, and I'm not lying.
Yes, I moved sleeping bags around
so I wouldn't make a mess.
- I didn't know how bad it was gonna be.
- Stop using that as your scapegoat.
- [Justin] Not a scapegoat.
- Not what this is about. It is.
[Justin] You are accusing me of stuff
that I'm not doing. It's pissing me off.
- [Seth] Wow.
- Mm.
- [Paul] Definitely a separation there.
- [Seth] Oh, absolutely.
[Amber] A liar and a thief
is a liar and a thief.
It was fine when you were stealing
from other people.
Why would we be so dumb
to think it wouldn't happen to us?
I want to beat Charlie
just as bad as you all.
Infiltrating the camp
and getting sleeping bags
was to take down another team.
No way that my mind has shifted
to do anything harmful
to our team and make it self-implode.
That would be suicidal.
All the stuff that I did to Delta Camp,
infiltrating Camp Delta,
that plan was discussed, thought out
by all of us, but when I came back
with the sleeping bags
and it gets down to freezing temperatures
at night, there's no complaints then.
I'm not going to jeopardize our winning
and our chances of winning this
over some stupid rations.
I promise you.
You swear on Jayla's life?
I swear on my daughter's life.
That's what it means to me out here.
I'm here to play the game.
I'm here to win.
And I don't care whose feelings I hurt.
They wanna manipulate me and try
to push me out, well, so be it then.
I'll play their game.
[Amber] Do you think that
we can continue on with three like this?
I don't know if we have a choice,
as far as my opinion goes.
If that's the way
this game needs to be played,
I need to have
a serious talk with Charlie.
Desperate times, desperate measures.
[suspenseful music playing]
[narrator] As Team Charlie continues
their surveillance on Alpha Camp,
Justin emerges
on the opposite bank of the Neka.
[Justin] Alpha Team was doing well.
We were thriving.
And all of a sudden, it just seemed
like it took a hard turn left.
I don't know if there was
some underlying ploy to get me out
or to push me to quit,
but I see the writing on the wall.
Maybe she wants to narrow it down to two
so they can keep my food. I don't know.
There's definitely
some kind of push or motive.
I'm at a point where enough's enough.
You're not gonna do that shit to me.
I'm not gonna stand for it.
[Seth] What's going on?
[Justin] Good morning.
[Seth] Cold night last night, wasn't it?
[Justin] Yeah, but I got
two sleeping bags, brother.
[Seth] There you go.
[Justin] I'd like
to talk to all you gentlemen.
- Do you guys wanna hear some truth?
- [Nick] Yeah, absolutely.
So, the thing of it is, Jill, she's trying
to manipulate me to push me out.
Amber's right in her shadow.
She can't do anything. She looks up
to Jill, like "You're the Almighty."
Now, they're accusing me
of stealing their food.
Their emotional level is through the roof.
That's the bullshit I'm dealing with.
[Seth] Jill was the only one
we made contact with from your group.
That's why we went after Jill.
After that outburst,
obviously, we were wrong.
And we owe you an apology for that.
We'd like to send you an invite
if you wanna come over.
Complete democracy,
there's no bickering over here.
[Justin] Are you inviting me
to Team Charlie?
Oh my God, you're in the wrong spot.
Come with us. Let's end it.
I'm I'm accepting that.
I'm down to join Team Charlie.
- 'Cause Alpha is dwindling.
- Hell, yeah.
Let's do it today.
I was definitely nervous and uncertain.
I didn't know how they would respond.
I'd been kinda labeled as the villain.
But the outcome
is exactly what I was hoping for.
[Nick] Good choice.
[Seth] Try to cause no drama.
You don't have to. Let 'em guess about it.
- Yep, absolutely.
- [Nick] Sneak out, man.
- Don't make it a big deal.
- Awesome.
- Thank you, guys.
- [Seth] Yeah, brother.
I'll see y'all in a bit,
a little over an hour.
Yep.
[Nick] Best possible move, right there.
- I'm glad this is happening.
- [Seth] Yeah, absolutely.
[narrator]
With Jill and Amber away forging,
Justin has only a brief window
to return to Alpha Camp,
retrieve his gear, and escape unnoticed.
From the very beginning,
I wanted to be loyal to Alpha
until Alpha stopped being loyal to me.
I've tried to comply
and get along with Jill, but I'm over it.
Now the game begins.
At this point, we've been out here
for weeks and weeks.
Everybody's wearing thin.
We're at a point now,
it's move this up a notch.
Let's light a fire underneath it
so we can wrap this up.
So, as I was exiting Alpha Camp,
I decided to perform some sabotage,
and hopefully they'll tap out.
[unsettling music playing]
I'm not one to be pushed around.
I'm not one to be bullied.
Jill and Amber,
I don't even wanna think about them.
I'm not emotional.
It's just the way it is.
I'm ready to win this thing and go home.
I miss my little girl.
And every day I think about her.
I just hope my little one
I hope she knows
that I'm not going home until we win.
That's the commitment I made.
I was looking for a way out,
and there's two ways out.
One is to quit. I'm not a quitter.
The other one was to see
what Charlie had to offer.
I don't feel guilty one bit.
[narrator] After Justin flees Alpha Camp,
Jill and Amber return
to find their shelter ransacked.
[Amber] What an asshole.
[Jill] Wow. We knew not to trust him.
[Amber] [bleep] him.
[bleep] him for [bleep] his maliciousness.
[Jill]
He took the roof off of the shelters.
He has literally lost his mind.
He's just such a [bleep] man. Like, ugh!
I'm frustrated.
- Instead of facing us like a man
- Yeah.
he's going to cut the tarps
- and run away like a coward.
- Yeah.
He does not have
his cognitive state intact anymore.
- No.
- He has literally broken.
I don't feel like I've made
any mistakes so far out here
other than trusting someone
that I shouldn't have trusted.
We spent a month with this guy.
You know, it's not like
he did shit like this as strangers.
We've lived together for a month.
We said we were a family
right here in front of this shelter.
He swore on his five-year-old
daughter's life
and lied to our face.
[Jill] Everything we did to Delta,
everything we did to Bravo,
everything that we contemplated
doing to Charlie,
we were doing as a family.
If that does not tell you
what kind of man Justin is
I really don't think that there's
anything else that I need to say.
[Amber] He definitely
did not leave with his dignity.
But he didn't break us,
and we're gonna keep on going.
Goodbye, Justin.
We'll just make it better
this time, you know?
[Amber] That's right.
[intense music playing]
[Justin] I'm feeling better, hopeful.
I'm feeling relieved already,
though I'm not across the river.
My mind is hopeful after all
that's happened in the last 24 hours.
My mind and my heart
is looking forward to the next evolution.
I'm just gonna take the long route,
walk my happy ass all the way around.
Whatever you gotta do
to get the job done at this point.
But what a beautiful day to do it.
[Seth] What's going on?
Does it get deeper over here?
[Justin] Out in the middle,
it's pretty shallow.
[Seth] Tiptoes, baby, tiptoes.
I'm happy. I'm on a new high right now.
- [Seth] Happy to have you.
- Thank you for having me.
- Yeah.
- Pleasure to be here.
[Seth] So I do wanna look you in the eye.
No funny games, right?
[Justin] No [bleep] funny games, dude.
You have my word and my honor as a man.
- I'm with Charlie.
- [Seth] We don't play games over here.
Game playing's over.
Now, we just kick their asses.
[Amber] We needed to fix the holes anyway.
[narrator] Back at Alpha Camp,
Jill and Amber work
to repair their shelter
before the nighttime temperatures
once again drop below freezing.
[Amber] Every time we do it,
we do it better.
[Jill]
We'll fix the wall for good somehow.
I don't know what with yet.
Justin, the things that he has done,
the betrayal that he committed,
he will have to live with
the rest of his life.
'Cause he is over in Charlie
because Justin spun some big,
you know,
sympathetic pity party lie for 'em,
and they don't know
that he is a pathological liar,
so they believed him.
What Justin did was personal.
He crossed a line.
It's not okay.
So, I made a decision.
I'm gonna send a message to Charlie.
I'll tell 'em the truth because you know
he did not give them honesty.
He doesn't know the meaning of the word.
"Good morning, Charlie boys."
"We sincerely hope
you three are doing well,
but you need to know some facts."
Yes.
"After you accepted Justin onto Charlie,
he stole gear,
destroying and raiding our camp."
"And he has stolen our food too."
How do we wanna finish it?
[Amber] "Is this the game
that you want to play?"
"Are these the rules
that you want to play by?"
"Is this who you want to finish with?"
[Jill] Did you bring an arrow?
[Amber] Yeah, I got a little flag too
that we can attach to it.
I think that's a good message,
and it puts the ball in their court.
Expose the truth.
Their fate
and the rest of the game and how
it's played is in their hands now.
[Jill] Ball in your court, Charlie.
Justin is going to learn
you don't betray your family.
[voice breaking]
You do not do that to your family.
So, I sit here, and I wait for that flare.
Because that's the only thing
he's good for.
[intense music builds]
[closing theme music playing]
