Private Eyes (2015) s02e14 Episode Script

Finding Leroy

1 The answer is no.
I just got out of a relationship, I don't wanna date - anyone right now.
- [Oh, come on!.]
He's a nice guy.
What's the harm in meeting him? He's a cop.
He's not a cop, he's a forensic pathologist.
Good-looking, too.
There is the whole drooling thing, but [You're trying to set me up with a guy who drools over dead bodies?.]
OK, if you're gonna put it that way Hold on, there's someone at the door.
Oh, hey! I'm on the phone with Maz.
- [Who are you talking to?.]
- My UberEATS just arrived.
Why did you tell them you were on the phone with me? [I gotta go, my sushi is getting cold.
.]
I mean warm.
I'll call you later.
- Sila, what's going on? - You have to help me.
But please don't tell Maz about this, we got into a giant, awful fight about me moving in with Jordan and now we're not even talking.
Oh my God, I can't breathe! OK, calm down.
Just tell me what happened.
Somebody took Leroy.
- Ready? - Yep.
Ready? Yep.
Oh, there he is! He's out! Hold on.
Ahh! Over there.
There he goes.
There he is, there he is! I've got him, I've got him! Aha, gotcha! Attaboy, Liam! Alright, here we go.
Here we go.
Look at that.
Ugh! - One live mouse.
- What are we gonna do with him? I don't know, let him go in the back alley or something? Yeah.
Oh, that's my mom.
I gotta go.
Oh, hey! I saw that Phoenix was coming to the Masonic Temple this spring and you'll be back from Italy by then.
Should I grab some tickets? Uh They're going on sale tomorrow and they'll sell out pretty quick.
Cool.
Um, maybe.
I'll let you know, OK? Yeah, of course.
See ya.
- Bye.
- Bye.
Bye, Mr.
Shade.
- Bye, Liam.
- Bye! What was that about? I thought you liked Phoenix.
I don't I don't know.
I'm leaving for Italy in a month.
It feels weird to make plans so far ahead.
Who knows what I'll be interested in by then? Yeah, right.
Gotta meet Angie downtown.
New case.
Um, Grandpa's around here - somewhere.
Will you be OK? - Yeah, go, go.
How you doing there, bud? Man, I love this place.
Our client works here? She's the lead marine biologist and head of research - and conservation, and also - Angie! Oh, thank you so much for coming! You must be Matt Shade.
Hi.
I'm Dr.
Sila Mazhari.
Oh, that's funny.
We know a Mazhari.
- You're related to him, aren't you? - Yes.
She's Maz's sister.
- Ah! Is he here? - No.
I don't want him involved in this.
I usually feel the same way.
So, what's the problem? - Leroy's gone.
- Leroy, your colleague? No.
- Boyfriend? - No.
Leroy is an octopus.
An octopus! - Your text didn't mention that.
- Surprise! - Why would anyone - steal an octopus? - Leroy is more than just an octopus.
He's an Enteroctopus Ibakaan.
- You don't say.
- He was found 3 weeks ago off the shore of North Korea.
I petitioned to have him sent here.
His species is on the brink of extinction.
- How many are left? - Prior to finding Leroy, one.
- One? - A female named Sally.
She's at an aquarium in Australia.
We transported Leroy here for conservation purposes.
I studied his species for my PhD dissertation, but the research that my team and I have uncovered is, like poof! - What kind of research? - Well, through some blood tests, we were able to isolate the nuclear membrane of his DNA and the way the microtubules attach to the chromosomes and - Uh, words we understand.
- Right, um, OK.
Leroy has regenerative capabilities unlike any other creature on Earth.
It takes a starfish up to a year to regenerate a severed arm.
Leroy can regrow a new tentacle in just a few weeks.
Is the Australian aquarium aware of your findings? Sally's on her way here as we speak.
Let me guess: you're hoping for a love connection.
If we can get them to mate, we can bring an entire species back from the dead.
The tank was right there.
The thieves came in through the door - and took it out with them.
- How big was the tank? - At least 300 gallons.
- That's a lot of weight.
It was on wheels.
We were slowly trying to introduce new elements of his habitat to break him in.
Where's his new habitat? Out front.
Tallulah the sea turtle's being shipped off to Puttner Aquarium to make room.
My God, Angie, what am I gonna do? I mean, we were setting him up to have his own YouTube channel.
Sally had one in Australia - that became super popular, so - Calm down.
Don't worry.
If he's out there, we're gonna find him.
Are you sure you don't wanna bring Maz in on this? No, no, no, no, no.
I can't.
If he gets involved, it just becomes a whole thing and the press will find out, and we have to keep this quiet.
- OK.
- Hey, this security camera here, - is it recording? - Yes! Henry, I'm coming your way, if you can cue up the surveillance footage.
[Copy that.
.]
So, what's the story with her and Maz? Oh, he's less than thrilled that his little sister moved in with her boyfriend after only knowing him 3 months.
Jordan's basically her first serious relationship.
- Really? - Yeah, she fast-tracked through school, had two PhDs by the time she was 26.
Boyfriends weren't exactly a priority.
Hey, believe me, I understand where Maz is coming from, but she is an adult.
It's just around the corner.
There's more to it, but I'll tell you later.
This is Henry, one of our security guards.
Henry, these are some friends of mine.
They're gonna help us find Leroy.
- Can you show them the footage? - Such as it is, the thieves hacked our system.
This is all I have.
Can't even make out the plate.
See, he gets his computer and then blackout.
Professional job.
Dr.
Sandoval, what are you doing here? I get notified every time our security alarm goes off.
Henry filled me in.
How could this have happened? We're still trying to figure that out.
Who are you? This is Angie Everett and her partner Matt Shade.
They're private investigators.
You called Pis? Shouldn't we have called the police? I thought it was best if we just kept the theft quiet until we knew more.
Actually, that's smart.
- And you are? - Fred Gusev.
Chairman of the Board of Directors.
I was having dinner with Dr.
Sandoval when she got the call.
Please, sir, can I ask you not to say anything to the board - about this? - It's gonna be apparent on Friday.
- What happens Friday? - There's an event planned.
It's the grand unveiling of Leroy and Sally's new habitat.
This mishap could cost your department funding for next year, Dr.
Mazhari.
That includes your salary.
We were about to save an entire species.
I don't even care about my job right now.
I just wanna get Leroy back safe OK, OK, everyone just take a breath.
The board doesn't meet for 48 hours, if you can track down Leroy - within that time - We will.
I hope so.
This was your project, Dr.
Mazhari.
The board allocated nearly a million dollars to your research, so this lies on your shoulders.
Big promise you made.
I can't let Sila down.
If she doesn't Maz involved in the case, it's up to us to get her out of this.
Yeah, about Maz His dad was a cop, undercover.
He couldn't handle the stress.
- Maz doesn't like to talk about it.
- So what happened? He had a nervous breakdown.
Yeah, he ended up in the hospital.
When he got out, he just left.
Maz was in college at the time.
Sila was 13.
It changed the relationship between them.
He became more of a dad - than a brother.
- Exactly.
Alright, well, let's work the angles.
Why steal an octopus? A very valuable, one-of-a-kind octopus.
What's your motivation? You're an animal activist.
Free Leroy into the wild.
Sila's a conservationist.
Her job is to save animals.
Not to mention they left all the others behind.
You wanna strike a blow against the facility, for some reason, or Sila herself.
Then why not kill the octopus? Why bother removing - the entire tank? - Right.
OK, so let's say I've stolen this incredibly rare, almost extinct octopus and I wanna sell it for a lot of money.
How do you fence a hot octopus? Just so we're clear, this is the last place Sila wanted us to come.
We don't have to tell him who our client is.
Tell me who what client is? Uh your last name is Mazhari.
That's good, Shade.
You're finally learning.
So what brings you two clowns down here so late on a school night? - Exotic animals.
- OK.
I've been on a 15-hour shift.
This is this is going to be great.
What can you tell us about the illegal animal trade in this city? Well, wildlife trafficking is the fourth biggest black market industry after drugs, guns and people.
Brings in 23 billion dollars a year.
Who did you say your client was? - Did you say billion with a B? - Between collectors, poachers, medical companies, there's a long list of people who for some reason get their kicks out of owning exotic animals.
And how exactly does the trade of said wildlife work? Well, let's see.
On a local level, we've got 3 major importer-exporters that we know about.
They sell animals at secret auctions.
- Can't you just shut them down? - It's easier said than done.
They bounce around all over the city.
There is a taskforce who's supposed to deal with this, but if you ask me, the detective in charge is just coasting until retirement.
You didn't get that from me.
- So who's your client? - Thanks, Maz.
Gotta go.
I hear slippers.
- Are you still in your PJs? - I am.
- I had to work late on a case.
- Good morning.
So, um, I was wondering What was with you not wanting to go to that concert - with Liam? - Well, I was thinking 4 months is a long time to do the distance thing, so maybe Liam and I should take a break as in break up.
I see.
But the other part of me doesn't want to lose him, 'cause he's great.
Right.
So what do you think I should do? I think you should dump him.
- Dad! - Honey, I remember when I was your age.
I got called up to play Junior A, had to move across the country.
I broke up with my first girlfriend, Christy.
Turns out to be - the best decision I could've made.
- Really? Yeah.
On my own, I could focus on hockey, I didn't have to share myself with someone who wasn't part of my life anymore.
Yeah, maybe you're right.
Thanks, Dad.
- See you tonight.
- Hey, honey, what are we doing with the? These are the importers Maz told us about? Yeah.
Anica Velic, Andrew Barker, and Fung Ying Chow.
That's gonna take forever to track each one of them down.
Luckily, you won't have to.
I just got off the phone with my uncle's friend's son-in-law's brother who runs an army surplus store on Spadina.
Apparently, they have a special on gas masks right now - Zoe, focus.
- Right.
Uh, according to him, all three importers distribute through a woman named Elodie.
Elodie? She runs a weekly exotic pet auction in various places throughout the city, but rumour has it - there's one today in Chinatown.
- Suspicious timing.
- So how do we find her? - Army surplus guy says to walk along Dundas and approach the men standing on the street.
Men who look like they're waiting for you to walk up to them - I'm not making this up - and say "Elodie", then they'll take you to where the auction's being held.
It's worth a shot.
Should we tell Sila? - Maybe we should wait until - Wait, wait.
Sila? As in, marine biologist, octopus Sila? Shut the front door, she's our client? You can't say anything.
Who would I tell? Just Maz.
That's exactly who you can't tell.
Zoe, promise you will not spill the beans.
OK, look, here's the thing.
I'm, like, really good at keeping secrets and all that from strangers.
But when it comes to my inner circle, truth comes flying out of me like projectile vomit.
Can't you just stay - away from him for a few days? - I totally would, except we're hanging out tonight.
I won't say anything.
I promise.
Ugh, it's been an hour and a half.
I'm ready to buy a pork skewer and call it a day.
No, come on, we can't give up yet.
OK, what about that guy? Hey.
Elodie? Elodie? - You guys looking for Elodie? - Yeah.
Follow me.
The opening bid is $15,000 dollars.
Excellent, we have 15,000.
Now we have 16,000, gentleman with the red tie.
Do we have 17,000? Do we have any movement? 17,000 for a Bengal tiger puppy Excellent! We have 17,000 from the gentleman with the pretty lady.
No, no, no, I was just Now we have 18,000.
- Whew! that was close.
- Excellent! Gentleman raises it to 19,000! - No, no, no, I - Stay still! 19,000 going once, going twice $20,000, gentleman with the sunglasses.
Do we have any movement? Don't even breathe.
Sold! $20,000.
- Elodie? - Oui? My name is Matt Shade.
This is my partner, Angie Everett.
We're not cops.
We're here about a missing octopus.
It was stolen - from Ripley's Aquarium.
- How do you know about the octopus? How do you know about it? It's been on the dark web for the last 12 hours.
Guess our balaclava buddies went looking for a buyer.
- Do you know who ended up with it? - Why would I tell you? Because maybe I'll off some friends at PETA about the little party you're having down here.
Ketura got it.
Of all people.
On y va? Wait, who's Ketura? Ketura Why is that name familiar? Hm.
I'm texting Maz to tell him who's running the underground auctions.
Maybe he knows someone who can track footprints on the dark web.
What's wrong? I knew I recognised that name.
Ketura is a famous underground chef.
Leroy's about to become someone's dinner.
Ketura goes by one name.
Wikipedia says she's a renegade chef who hosts clandestine, exclusive, cutting-edge I think they mean unethical-pop-up feasts around the world.
I remember hearing rumours of her infamous dinners when I had my restaurant.
The more rare and unethical, the higher the price.
Well, the good news is Ketura's famous for only using the freshest of ingredients.
And how is that good news? It means Leroy's probably still alive.
We just need to find out where that dinner's being held.
I may know a guy I can call.
Julian Barrington.
He's a food critic.
Gave my restaurant a scathing review three weeks after it opened.
What did he say? "The meal was reminiscent of Matt Shade's hockey career: sweaty, filled with errors, but mercifully brief.
" Ouch.
Yeah.
Guy had it in for me after I called him a poser - on live TV.
- You really had a way with people back then.
I drive by your old restaurant every now and then.
It's a shoe repair shop now, yet the aroma still reminds me of your place.
Ha, ha, ha! That's funny.
You know, I'm actually thinking of getting back into the restaurant business.
My palate quivers with anticipation.
More of a sideline this time.
Oh, yes, because running a restaurant is a lovely hobby to take up.
I'm thinking of doing it more in a pop-up style, like Ketura.
That's why I'd really like to attend that dinner of hers tonight.
You'll never get into that dinner, it's sold out.
Besides, tickets are $5,000 each.
- $5,000?! - For a once-in-a-lifetime experience? Absolutely.
Luckily, my ticket was comped.
I don't believe you.
Let me see it.
- How mature.
- Seriously.
You're not being flown to restaurant openings anymore.
You've become a little bit What's the word? Passé, in the food critic world.
Here.
See for yourself.
Wow.
Look at that.
1235 Mill Street.
Is that a restaurant? You'll never know.
I'm the closest you'll ever get to that dinner.
Bonsoir, madame.
You're here for? Ketura's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea dinner experience.
Right this way.
Copy that, Ketura.
Name, please.
Dubowski.
Mr.
and Mrs.
The Dubowskis have arrived.
Very well, ma'am.
Tickets, please.
Right away.
If you just take the door on the side of this building downstairs to the underground parking, one of Ketura's assistants will greet you.
Cover, I love it.
Have you been inside the venue? - It's everything you deserve and more.
- Don't we need our tickets? Oh no, I'll process them here.
But you do need a password.
Leroy.
Leroy.
Leroy.
- Have a nice night.
- Enjoy.
How long before they realise? Long enough for us to get in and get out.
What's this for? Oh, I spoke to Sila before we left.
If we find Leroy, - we can lure him into this thing.
- How's he supposed to fit in here? Apparently octopuses don't have bones, so they can fit into really tiny spaces.
Clearly the thieves weren't well-versed in octopus physiology.
Do I really have to carry around a huge man purse? Can't you just own it? An entire species depends on it.
- Hi! - I'm happy to see you too.
Sorry, you scared me.
I thought we were meeting at the restaurant.
Yeah, but I got off work early, so I figured - I'd pick you up.
- Hm, great.
Amazing.
That's so thoughtful.
I am just going to clean up a little bit.
Real quick.
- Why are you being weird? - I'm a weirdo.
Just comes with the territory.
Touché.
What is all this stuff? What are you taking down? - I have to go to the bathroom.
- Isn't the bathroom that way? What's going on here? What aren't you telling me? Nothing.
Come on.
Our client is Sila, your sister.
She made Shade and Angie promise not to tell you and now I just did, so maybe I'm fired.
Sila? What's going on with my sister? Ah! Thank you.
OK, we need to get to the kitchen.
Welcome, everyone.
Please, please.
Take your seats.
Thank you for joining me.
It is my privilege, my honor, to feed you this evening.
I hope you all brought your appetite.
May I present the first course? Fugu, also known as pufferfish.
Delicious on the tongue, but deadly if prepared incorrectly.
You must train for two years before taking a rigorous test in which one third of all applicants fail.
Don't worry, I passed.
And for the main course In our kitchen right now, a truly rare treat.
A species of octopus known for its incredible Now's our chance to get to the kitchen - while she's still talking.
- It can grow a new tentacle in just Uh, - sorry, can I help you? - Oh, just going to the bathroom.
That's the kitchen.
You can't go in there.
Oh, we won't be a minute.
Sorry to spoil your supper, but could everyone please put their hands in the air? Did I stutter? Drop the fork.
Nobody messes with my sister's octopus.
What are you talking about? Turn around, please.
Turn around.
Go! Ketura, you are under arrest for the entrapment and endangerment of a protected marine wildlife.
- Where's the frigging tank? - It's not here.
Uh-oh.
What? Oh Leroy.
- Oh! - Get your own! There's like 5 chips in here and I'm starving.
So, Jules is breaking up with Liam.
What? How come? She wants to make a clean break before Italy, you know, really immerse herself in the culture.
I thought it was a great idea.
- You support this? - Why? No reason.
I mean, Liam's awesome, right, but so is being young and free.
I remember spending time - in France by myself.
- Right, taking in the streets, the museums, the people, without being tethered to someone across the ocean.
More like spending time with Nico, the artist who lived in the Troisième Arrondissement.
Oh, and there was Pascal, that weekend in Montpellier.
Oh God, what have I done? I need to talk to Jules, make sure she's not making any rash decisions.
Not so fast.
You, you're in the bad books.
She made me promise, Maz, and my client has a right to her anonymity.
Not when your clientm is my little sister.
We're not in grade school.
Sila's a grown woman, she can make her own decisions.
Can we talk about that later, please? For now, I just thought you'd like to know that in addition to trafficking in illegal animals, Ketura is also a fraud.
- What are you talking about? - She found out Leroy was stolen through back channels.
She took credit for the theft in order to profit from it.
Wait, so the octopus we found? Not Leroy.
St.
Lawrence Market, 80 bucks.
- And the video? - Some other octopus.
Sally.
It was footage from her webcam.
I'm sorry, you know an octopusnamed Sally with a webcam? OK, you know what, I don't care.
The point is you should've brought me in earlier.
- I get it.
We need to talk to Sila.
- And this time I'll be there.
You just leave your garbage on my desk? - I don't care! - You know, I do happen to be a cop that specializes in break-ins and thefts.
You should've contacted me first.
I didn't want your help.
You cut me out, so I cut you out.
I didn't cut you out, you just don't know how to listen.
- Well, now you sound like Mom.
- Speaking of Mom, did you tell her you moved in with a guy you met on Bumble three months ago? So what? Get over it! Whole life has been devoted to her work; one guy swipes right and it goes right out the window.
What's really the problem, here? Is it the fact that I have a person in my life that's not you or Mom, or is it the fact that I'm in love? Ha, ha, ha! In love? Really? Sila, you just met this guy.
What are you gonna do, - get a house together and have kids? - Gimme one good reason why not.
Because, as everybody knows, you need to flush at least two long-term relationships down the toilet before you can even think about settling down! He asked me to marry him, Kurtis.
That's insanity.
What are you, 18 years old in the 1950s? No.
No, I'm a modern, career-driven woman who's capable of working and being loved at the same time.
Yeah, that's great.
- What are you doing? - What I should've done in the first place: calling Forensics to get down here and scour the crime scene, alright? Modern woman.
Hey, Marty.
Yeah.
Sila Screwing up in all the ways, aren't I? Oh, hey, honey.
- How's Mickey doing? - I think it's a Minnie, and I think she's anxious to get out, so me and Liam are gonna release her in a field after school.
- Oh, so you haven't - Broken up with him? No.
It's harder - than I thought it was gonna be.
- That's understandable, honey.
Liam's a great guy and he's become one of your best friends.
If you're having second thoughts, that's OK.
Long-distance relationships can be rewarding too.
Yesterday you said you thought my decision was very mature.
And it is.
I just wanna make sure that you're following your heart and not being pragmatic for the sake of it.
Oh my God, I actually thought I was making the right decision.
Sweetheart No, Dad, I cannot talk about this any more.
Honey, honey, wait.
Look, forget what I said, OK? This is your decision, not mine.
I shouldn't be offering advice.
But I thought you said You're gonna make the right choice, OK? Just trust yourself.
Because I do.
Thanks, Dad.
- See ya.
- Have a good day at school.
Thank you.
Zoe? Zoe I'm sorry.
I tried to keep my mouth shut.
- I even tried running away from him.
- Don't worry.
We never should've put you in that position.
- So I'm not fired? - Water up a duck's back, kiddo.
OK, that's great, because I did some more digging.
I figured if it wasn't creepy Ketura, then who? May I present Dave O'Brien.
A former security guard at the aquarium.
He was unceremoniously let go of last week, after working there for nearly a decade.
Interesting.
He would've known all about Leroy.
And maybe how to disable the security cameras.
After ten years, maybe you wanted a little revenge.
Nah, you guys got it all wrong.
The aquarium had every right to fire me.
I was a mess - the last year I worked there.
- So no hard feelings? No.
Made me stand up and pay attention.
I even went back to school because of it.
- Where were you two nights ago? - I was right here.
I traded for an evening shift, to audit a class.
You can check with my boss, his office is right in there.
That's OK.
We believe you.
Hey! How'd the thieves get away with it, anyway? I mean, I worked there forever and we never had a robbery.
- Not one.
- They pulled a van up to the loading bay, hacked the security system, broke in, stole a tank.
- Hm! No plates, I guess? - We couldn't make them out.
What about the parking attendant's camera? Parking lot's maintained by a different company.
The attendant got robbed last year, so he stuck a spy cam on top of his booth.
Points right - at the aquarium back door.
- Thanks.
I called and got the footage, no problem.
I hate this parking lot company, by the way.
Nine bucks an hour downtown? I managed to zoom in this much, but Still can't make out anything.
And 20 minutes later The thieves get back in the van - and it speeds away.
- Nope.
- Nada.
- Shoot.
Oh - Hey, Maz.
- [So, this is interesting.
.]
Analysis came back from the lab.
Fingerprints from the back area all match employees of the facility, except for one.
- [Who?.]
- Jordan.
- Jordan who? - [Jordan Gill.
.]
Sila's new boyfriend.
Or should I say fiancé? Take a seat.
I never thought this would be Your how we finally meet.
Hm.
Do you know anything about the octopus that was taken two nights ago? Nope.
I don't know anything about marine life.
- That's really Sila's world.
- Yeah, it is Sila's world.
In fact, it was her entire world until you showed up.
- What? - We found your fingerprints on a tank in the restricted area of the aquarium.
Seems you're in the system because you're a schoolteacher.
What happened? Jealous of Sila's workaholic lifestyle so you decided to sabotage her career? No, no! That couldn't be further from the truth.
Then what were you doing at the aquarium? She she wouldn't return my phone calls, or texts, or emails.
I did the Say Anything move with the boombox, - didn't work either.
- I don't understand.
You two broke up? I thought you were engaged.
No, man.
She said no.
And moved out last weekend.
She just did a 180 on me.
Huh.
Anyways, I slipped past the security guy.
I just wanted to find her - and talk to her.
- That's a little stalkerish.
- Please continue.
- She wasn't there, so I just left a note on a Post-It.
A note on a Post-It, how romantic! And the octopus was still in the tank when you were there? Yeah, stuck on the wall.
- What time was that? - Eight, I think.
- What d'you do after that? - Well, I coach senior boys' basketball at my school, so on Tuesdays we practice 9 to 11.
- Hayworth Tech, right? - Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, that's only 10 minutes from Ripley's.
The theft happened at 8:40, you could totally have still done it.
No, no, I was in traffic.
In traffic? On a weeknight? Alright, why don't you sit tight and we'll, uh, check out your alibi? Are you sure about this? - He seemed pretty genuine.
- Is it such a stretch to assume he wanted some measure of revenge when Sila rejected his proposal? Hey.
I came as soon as I got your text.
What Hey.
Wait, what? You found Jordan's fingerprints at the aquarium? Hang on, Sila, you're not supposed to Sila, it wasn't me.
- Why were you there? - To see you! Sila, I didn't know what else to do.
I I left a note, did you get it? - No, I didn't.
- Sila, talk to me.
You can't just shut people out like this all of a sudden.
I freaked out, OK? I was happy.
And then you asked me to marry you, and the only thing that popped into my head was how upset my family would be.
I couldn't be engaged, I couldn't even be with somebody without my family's approval, and I know it's old-fashioned and it's dumb It's fine.
I'm sorry.
Just forget I asked.
Look, my career is on the line.
Can you just give me some space? I'll give you I'll call you later, we can talk we'll talk later.
Hey, you're free to go.
Hey, just remember, I gassed up after I left Ripley's.
8:45, you can check my credit card.
But thanks for making me look like a criminal in front of the love of my life.
What? - We should get going.
- I'll meet you in the car.
I have to say something.
But it's because I love you and Sila.
Angie, just stay out of it, alright? Focus on the octopus.
That poor girl lost her father when she was 13 years old, but that was OK because she had you.
She didn't need her dad there when she graduated, when she got her driver's license or broke her collarbone, because she had you.
- What's your point? - My point is she grew up, Maz.
You can't keep treating her like she's 13 years old.
You did the right thing back then, but now you gotta let her live her life.
Just be her brother, not her father.
You ready to do this? - I think so.
- I found the perfect spot.
Plenty to eat and lots of places to hide.
You really think she'll survive out there? She'll be fine.
She'll meet new friends in no time.
Um, you must be pretty stoked about Italy.
Yeah, totally.
Probably gonna be busy, with the schoolwork and crazy trips every weekend.
And you'll be across the ocean.
Which is why - Liam - I I think I think we should just transition into being friends before you leave.
What? Jules, I could I could sense something has been off with us for weeks.
I get it.
Can't say I disagree.
OK.
Come on, let's go let our little friend free.
Actually, uh, I'd like to hold on to her a little longer.
OK.
See you at school? - So, wasn't Jordan.
- Poor kid.
Why am I the only one to ever change this? I got it.
I got it.
- Really? - Zoe, cue up the parking lot security footage of the van pulling away from the aquarium.
There.
- The van leaving.
- OK, stop.
Now let me see it pulling in again.
- What are you seeing? - There.
300-gallon tank full of water, - that's nearly 2,500 pounds.
- The van never gets any lower.
The wheel wells would've been closer to the tires.
The tank they took was empty.
Leroy never left the facility.
Which means someone over there is lying to us.
Henry, have any animals left the facility since the theft of Leroy? Just Tallulah, our sea turtle.
She's being transferred to Puttner Aquarium, yeah, I remember Sila told us.
When'd Tallulah's shipment leave? Uh, this afternoon.
The truck picked up the crate at 3PM, headed to the airport.
- Anything else go with it? - Six barrels of seawater.
We send enough of the habitat with the animal to reduce the shock at the other end.
That's weird.
This says 7 barrels were loaded, but we're only sending 6.
Thanks.
OK, thanks.
The shipping company says the driver was asked to make a last-minute stop en route to Pearson.
7273 Orbitor Road.
Etherea Industries.
What's that? According to their website, one of the largest manufacturers of skincare products in Canada.
Their biggest selling product is sequoia serum.
In addition to their retail operations, they have an extensive research and development division.
"We scour the Earth "in search of the most natural sources of cell regeneration.
" Like a nearly-extinct octopus.
- Whoa.
- What? You're not gonna believe who sits on the Etherea Board of Directors.
- Hold up, boys.
- Can I help you? We need you to open that barrel.
- I don't take orders from you.
- I told you I'd get it here.
We have to get the truck back on the road ASAP.
Mr.
Gusev.
Fancy meeting you here.
What are you doing here? Did you find Leroy? I think you found him for us.
- What d'you mean? - Turns out the theft at the aquarium was a bit of a red herring.
A ruse to distract from the real crime: sneaking Leroy out with Tallulah's shipment.
It was a clever plan, actually, hiring thieves to steal an empty tank - after you had already removed Leroy.
- The only problem was you drained the water to make it easier to move the tank.
There's no way that van's carrying 2,500 pounds of water.
This is preposterous.
As preposterous as finding you here at a cosmetics company with a truck full of barrels from the aquarium? Leroy.
Do you have any idea how how valuable a creature like this is? You wanted Leroy dead so you could extract and replicate the nuclear membrane thing.
Imagine a product that doesn't just remove wrinkles, it actually regenerates new skin.
So exploiting people's vanity is worth killing off an entire species? It would take 20 years to repopulate the species.
A discovery like this is worth billions.
Too bad you won't be around to collect.
Leroy?! Oh, thank God! Fred Gusev, you're under arrest for burglary in the third degree.
Get him.
I can't believe this! Let's go.
- Yeah, what's up? - [Well, .]
Sila just called, and Leroy is back in his habitat, safe and sound.
- That's good news.
- [Speaking of, .]
[how is Jules and Liam?.]
I'm about to find out.
Call you tomorrow.
Hey, honey.
- Did you talk to - We ended it.
Or I guess he did.
He did? I know it's for the best, and it's what I wanted, but I really didn't think it was gonna hurt this much.
Like, a lot.
Aw No, don't hug me, I don't wanna cry.
Honey, you just have to let yourself hurt, OK? Just let it out, and one day it won't hurt anymore.
That sounds horrible.
Yeah.
It is.
Thank you all so much for coming.
This is a historic moment at Ripley's.
And with a little help from our friends from Down under I can't do accents.
I don't know why I attempted that.
Um I am honored and privileged to present to you Toronto's newest "it" couple, Leroy and his partner Sally.
With this conjoining, we are hoping to bring an exciting species back into existence.
And to prove to all you cynics out there that love does indeed conquer all.
That was amazing.
You were amazing.
Well, it was all thanks to you guys.
Seriously, you two saved me.
Hey, it's what we do.
Oh, - this is Zoe, our assistant.
- Zoe Zoe? As in Maz's girlfriend? I've been dying to meet you.
Me too.
Intimidated beyond belief, but dying.
We should all hang out sometime.
Uh, where's Kurtis? Haven't seen him.
- Oh.
- I didn't want to cramp your style, - so I watched from the back.
- You made it.
Fantastic.
Of course I made it, come on! I wouldn't miss this.
I also brought a plus-one, I hope that's OK.
- Jordan? - I'm not trying to interfere, I was just hoping to maybe undo some of the damage - I may have done.
- Hm.
Well, thank you.
He's nice, right? Go, go, go.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- I I got your note.
- Oh, OK.
- Um, what is it? - Well, it's an octopus with a boombox.
I'm not good at drawing.
Oh.
Of course it is.
- Good job, big brother.
- Eh.
- You were right.
- Come on, let's get a closer look at these octopuses.
My God, is that a euphemism for something, or do you really wanna look at octopuses? - Guess you'll have to wait and see.
- Oh, my God! We're gonna get kicked out of here! Did you know octopuses have three hearts, - Everett? - No.
Poor them.
Three times the heartbreak.
Or three times the capacity for love.
Ho, ho, ho, ho! Yeah!
