Shooter (2016) s02e01 Episode Script

The Hunting Party

1 Previously on "Shooter" What can I do for you, Captain? Ten days ago, a CIA agent was shot by a sniper.
We believe this is the work of T.
Solotov.
I know that you don't like to talk about this stuff, but what happened to Donnie, I know that it still hurts you.
Donnie, no! [gunshot.]
He died because I trusted my gut.
He died because Solotov shot him.
Whatever you think you know about Solotov, he knows ten times about you.
He's a master sniper.
And that's exactly why I need you, Bob Lee.
The only reason I signed up for any of this is because I thought we were doing something that served a greater purpose.
[dramatic music.]
[speaking native language.]
- It's nothing.
- You framed me for murder.
Whether or not you want to admit it, you need my help.
Yeah, well, I left them in the dirt.
Someday I'm gonna do the same thing to you.
I'm sorry for what I did to you.
Don't let me see you again.
The bigger the conspiracy, the bigger the people involved.
Then we'll expose them all.
All the way to the top.
As high as it goes.
You're the National Security Advisor, right? You advise the president on which foreign leaders to meet with and where? You're a smart one, aren't you? You put the President of the United States in Seattle with the Ukrainian president.
[gunshot.]
My name is Bob Lee Swagger! I did not kill the president! When you go to the store tomorrow, don't forget to pick up some blueberries.
I won't forget.
[panting.]
[tea kettle whistles.]
- I want out.
- No.
I betrayed everything I've believed in for you.
The real problem is about to reveal itself.
Don't send anyone after me.
I won't have to.
Bob Lee Swagger, you are exonerated for the assassination of the Ukrainian president.
What if I want justice? You'll have to settle for freedom.
On behalf of Commander Fleet Marine Forces, Europe, Boeblingen, Germany, we invite to the podium, Gunnery Sergeant Bob Lee Swagger.
ALL: Swagger! [cheers and applause.]
[indistinct chatter.]
[whistles.]
[applause.]
Chesty Puller said, "A Marine doctor is a Navy corpsman, and there's no better in the business.
" For the men of 8113, Senior Chief Petty Officer Kevin Campbell was that corpsman.
Today he receives the Silver Star for bravery and valor when his battalion entered a minefield on March 21st of this year.
When one of the Marines detonated a mine, Doc Campbell didn't hesitate.
For the next five hours, he supervised the care and evacuation of those Marines without regard to his own injuries.
If you ask any Marine, the reason we fought was to make sure we all got to come home, and we fought for the memories of those who didn't.
Doc Campbell, from all the men of the 8113 and the countless Marines you've helped, our sincerest thank you.
[applause.]
I appreciate this honor, and it is an honor, but the real praise goes out to all the strong men and women who continue to fight long after we've come home.
It's those soldiers that we are indebted to, and we remember them every day.
It has been the privilege of my life to serve with you.
Thank you.
- [gunfire.]
- [crowd screaming.]
[gunfire continues.]
[screams.]
Stay down, stay down! [gunfire continues.]
[explosion booms.]
[screams.]
Stay down, stay down.
I'm gonna check the doors! - It's time to move! - Time to move! - Is there a back door? - Yes! That way! Follow me! Follow me! Tio! [whistles.]
[mouthing silently.]
- [gunshot.]
- [man grunts.]
[gasps and gurgles.]
They're all wired! One step at a time.
Follow me.
Keep your heads low, all right? When we hit the street, you turn right and you run.
- Run to where? - Julie, you guys get low, and don't stand till I give you the sign, copy? - Got it! - Tio, take left! - I'm gonna clear the lobby! - Copy! Clear! - He's still moving.
- He's dead.
Man, I'm not risking a twitch detonation.
I'm gonna neutralize his vest.
Jesus.
- Kevin! - [glass shatters.]
[explosion booms.]
[dramatic music.]
[techno dance music playing.]
[indistinct conversations.]
- I said, my German is terrible.
- I know.
You just asked me if I could bake a cake.
No, I meant to ask you that.
[chuckles.]
I'm kidding.
What what do you do for work? Finance.
How long are you in Frankfurt? A couple of weeks, and then I'll be back a lot.
I just got this territory.
[woman sings in German.]
[tense music.]
[men grunting and blows landing.]
[locker door clangs.]
[indistinct chatter.]
[speaking Thai.]
- Hey, babe.
- Hi.
How was the workout? It was fine.
Got you some soup.
You're sweet.
Anything wrong? Nope.
All good.
[hammer banging.]
Hey, Mousy.
Where you off to? - I'm busy, Daddy.
- Hey, what about lunch? You can just wrap it up and put it in the fridge for now.
She only ate the jelly out of her PB&J.
Ah, she'll be fine.
That's what I used to do.
[scoffs.]
You should shower up and get ready.
We're gonna be late.
Baby, we have four hours.
It's an international flight.
I mean, I still don't understand why you have to go all the way to Frankfurt to give him the award, but 'Cause he and his guys are still at Landstuhl.
That's not exactly Paris.
No, it's not, but it is a free trip to Europe.
[scoffs.]
You mean a free trip to see the boys.
We had a long year, Jules.
Without you and Mary and those guys, I don't know what I would have done.
Well, don't forget, we need the extra time at the airport.
You know, you're Bob Lee Swagger.
You have lots of security and people recognizing you.
Maybe we'll get lucky and nobody will notice me.
Yeah, right.
I laid out some suits on the bed.
Let me know which one you want to take, I'll pack it.
I have to wear a suit? Hell, yeah, you have to wear a suit.
You promised me a night without the boys, and I expect to be romanced.
And I'm still holding you to the trip to Paris.
Yes, ma'am.
Hey, mija, slow down.
We've got the whole weekend to run.
Hey, Kiddo, give Estella a break.
- Thank you for doing this.
- Oh, doing what? I've been breaking horses for 25 years.
What's one little girl? Mmm! Bye, my sweet girl.
I love you infinity times infinity.
That means forever.
It sure does.
Don't forget my coins, Daddy.
I won't forget your coins.
This is the worst part.
- Mom.
- I'm gonna miss you so much! Will you make me videos every day with Estella? - Yes.
- Like ten a day? Mom.
BOTH: I love you.
All right, you have all the numbers, right? - Oh, yes.
- Hotel information? I have three copies, so go on, go! We're gonna be fine.
Here, I made this for you.
- Thank you, I appreciate it.
- No, you're so sweet.
Thank you, though.
Bye, honey! MARY: Bye, Mom! Mom! Mommy, wait! Yeah, baby? I made something for you so every time you look at it you remember me.
I'm not gonna forget you.
Are you kidding me? BOTH: I love you.
And we'll miss you.
Okay, run inside.
- Estella's waiting for you.
- Okay.
- I love you, Daddy.
- I love you too, Mouse.
It's gonna be fine.
Better than fine.
We could use a few days.
Germany, here we come.
[engine turns over.]
Estella taught me a new word.
"Aw-veed-is-zanie.
" It means good-bye.
You can use it.
I love you, Mommy and Daddy.
Baby, how many times you gonna watch that? Maybe 100 million.
[chuckles.]
I miss her.
I do too.
[spits in sink.]
But I am glad we did this.
Yeah, me too.
I know the move to Texas was hard, but I promise you, it'll get better.
Look, anywhere we are is home to me.
I think I just thought things would be easier after some time passed.
Baby, the world's gonna move on, trust me.
- Mary does love Texas.
- It's been good for her.
Yeah.
She's already riding better than I was at her age.
Well, she's stubborn; that's half the battle.
Huh, I wonder who she got that from? - You.
- What about you? - I'm not stubborn.
- You're pretty stubborn.
- No, I'm not.
- You're pretty stubborn.
Yes, you are.
Your job is great for our sex life, but not so great for my job.
Tell the senator you had an interdepartmental meeting.
Is that what we're calling this? It sounds better than a nooner.
Gun takes a little getting used to.
Not that it isn't sexy, just slightly emasculating.
You're the man, I'm just a secretary with a badge.
You are a Senior Special Agent with the FBI, and that is a hell of a lot more than a secretary.
At least they moved you to D.
C.
They can't keep you behind a desk forever.
Are you kidding? The FBI invented the desk so that agents would have something to sit behind.
And I didn't ask for this transfer.
Nobody would knowingly want to work for The Office of Personnel Management.
Well, the road to the top is not always straight.
And if they didn't transfer you, you wouldn't have met me.
Excellent point.
[phone buzzes.]
[Harris sighs.]
Dinner Saturday? Um, I thought you had that security thing.
Yeah, I meant after.
[laughs.]
You know, just because we skipped lunch today doesn't mean you don't still have to impress me.
I see.
Okay, thanks.
You're not really gonna eat that, are you? You know, for someone in the intelligence business, you're not very smart.
Get in.
I'll drop you.
I don't mind walking.
I do.
Get in, and leave that.
So how are things at the DMV? Funny, I never heard that one before.
How's the private sector? I heard you gave a speech at Putin's birthday party.
If I only attended the birthday parties of my friends, I'd never leave the house.
- I have a job for you.
- And I've told you, no.
You didn't even ask what it is.
I'm happy at the FBI.
Really, you're happy filing papers at the OPM? You do realize, they won't ever let you in the field again? I can get out anywhere here.
You're radioactive, Nadine.
The FBI doesn't like heroes.
They want bureaucrats.
It's in the name, for Christ's sake.
Okay, what's the job, the one you're offering? I can't tell you unless you say Seriously, I can get out anywhere here.
Okay, I will tell you this.
The people who work for me affect real change, and we don't have to color inside the lines.
You can stay at the FBI.
I'll just have you transferred.
[tense music.]
To do what? One step at a time.
Just think about it, my dear, but not for too long.
Looks fine.
Ah, I should iron it just a little.
- Come on, Jules.
It's the guys.
- They don't care.
It's the guys and their wives, and wives care about those kind of things.
Come on.
I think you're just trying to get me out of my clothes.
I mean, we are in a hotel room alone.
[upbeat music.]
[gasps.]
[overlapping indistinct chatter.]
We do not have to hear this story again.
- Yes, yes, we do.
- Yes, we do.
No, it's not a reunion unless somebody tells the story, right? Exactly.
Someone tell the goddamn story, please.
- It's Dobbs.
Gotta be Dobbs.
- Dobbs.
- Tell the story.
- Dobbs! Dobbs! - Please don't.
- Please, Dobbs.
- Do it.
- Babe, no.
- Okay.
- Yeah! - No.
- [laughter.]
He used to make this big batch of chicken enchiladas, and Wait, wait, wait.
With Afghani chicken, which is technically pigeon.
- Oh! - But he did not care.
He didn't care.
He would have three of those things ten minutes before we went outside the wire.
- At least.
- And you could always tell when the shit was about to fly when Zehnder shit.
No, no! [all groaning and laughing.]
[laughter echoing and fades.]
You guys are not gonna believe this.
You have got to be kidding me.
I saw you go before we left.
I have an active metabolism.
I told you to take Imodium.
- Guys, we're on the job.
- Zehnder, go in your pants.
That's a big negative, Nailer.
Well, I don't think this pile of rocks has any indoor plumbing, - so you're shit out of luck.
- Literally.
- This place is deserted.
- I'm going.
- Deserted don't mean safe.
- Wait till we clear it.
I'm about to clear it.
Will somebody tell me what the hell is going on out there? Zehnder needs the head.
Does he know he's on a mission? The doors are locked.
Who abandons their house and locks the doors? Ahh! Three Talis on the north road.
Move, move, move, move.
[gunfire.]
- Ew! - Unh-uh! - Thanks, Dobbs.
- Zehnder.
I really miss that guy.
Then let's raise our glasses to Kurt Zehnder, Charlie Cartwright, Miguel Fernandez, and all the men fallen of the 8113.
MEN: Always faithful! Always forward! - Oorah! - Oorah! Thank God for Zehnder's weak constitution or else somebody'd be toasting us right now.
Could be.
Unh-uh, not with Bob the Nailer on overwatch.
- You can stop that.
- Oh, no, no, no, no.
This is the most famous sniper in the world.
That's right, that's right.
So much for being invisible, buddy.
Too bad Captain Johnson couldn't be here.
Y'all still keep in touch? Y'all used to be pretty tight.
I haven't seen him since I rotated out.
- Hey, jukebox, dude.
- Jukebox.
- No, no, no.
- [all groaning.]
[camera clicks.]
[phone chimes.]
- Got it.
Wait for it.
- Oh! [Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days" plays.]
- Hey, there, come on.
- I don't want to.
- Nice one, Dobbs! - All right, just for you.
Only for you.
[indistinct chatter.]
The real show is behind us.
Yes.
I had a friend was a big baseball player [together.]
Back in high school yeah This is what I had to live with.
[song continues in distance.]
BOTH: Make you look like a fool, boy - Get him, Swagger! - Hey-o! - No! - Get him, Swagger! He was walking out - This is so fun.
- Yeah, it is funny.
- Yeah.
- Had a few drinks But all we kept talking about What about if we get out of here? Oh, where to, sailor? - Guys, we're out.
- Aww! But we're gonna see you tomorrow, and, I forget, who's getting the Silver Star tomorrow? ALL: Ooh! See you tomorrow, Swagger! - Silver Star! - Silver Star! - All right, man! - Get home safe! [camera clicks.]
[tense music.]
[tense music.]
On behalf of Commander Fleet Marine Forces, Europe, Boeblingen, Germany, we invite to the podium Gunnery Sergeant Bob Lee Swagger.
ALL: Swagger! [cheers and applause.]
[indistinct chatter.]
[whistles.]
It's an honor to be standing up here for Kevin.
We'll even forgive him for joining the Navy.
[audience laughter.]
Doc Campbell, from all the men of the 8113 and the countless Marines you've helped, our sincerest thank you.
[audience applause.]
- Attention to the award.
- The Naval Attaché to the United States Embassy in Berlin and the President of the United States take pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Senior Chief Petty Officer Kevin Campbell.
[applause.]
I appreciate this honor, and it is an honor but the real praise goes out to all the strong men and women who continue to fight long after we've come home.
It's those soldiers that we are indebted to, and we remember them every day.
It has been the privilege of my life to serve with you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
[audience applause.]
[dramatic music.]
[people screaming.]
That was a rifle inside the hotel.
[gunfire and screaming.]
- [screams.]
- Stay down, stay down! [screaming.]
Stay down! I'm gonna check the doors! - [gunshot.]
- No! It's time to move! Time to move! - Is there a back door? - Stay low.
Yes, that way! Follow me, follow me! - Come on, follow me, follow me! - Let's go! Let's go! Stay low! Tio! [whistles.]
[mouthing silently.]
[gasps and gurgles.]
They're all wired! I can't feel my legs.
- It's adrenaline.
- Keep breathing.
- I've never been this scared.
- Look, you got this, okay? One step at a time.
Come on, follow me.
Keep your heads low, all right? When we hit the street, you turn right and you run.
- Run where? - Where they're not shooting.
Julie, you guys get low and don't stand until I give you the sign, copy? - Got it! - Tio, take left! - Copy! - I'm gonna clear the lobby! [tense music.]
There's one more.
Only way I'm getting a clear shot is if I'm in the lobby.
In case he lives, you pull the doors.
They're wood, but they're thick.
That means you're on the wrong side.
- What are you doing? - [gasps.]
Kevin! [gunshots.]
Aah! - You okay? - Yeah.
[sirens wailing.]
- Hey.
- How are you? Got the girls all squared away.
We're just gonna take turns with Kevin's girlfriend 'cause she's in pretty bad shape.
Yeah, but how are you? Messed up.
I mean, I know that this is normal for you.
This isn't normal for me.
Sweetheart, this isn't normal for anyone.
Guy must have helped over a thousand vets.
He literally got them back on their feet.
He deserved better.
We've ID'd the shooters.
- Turkish.
- They're running them now.
Chances are it's gonna come up empty.
What do you mean, "empty"? These assholes work in small cells, very compartmentalized.
I'm sure ISIS will claim credit.
- How's Rodriguez? - Lucky, I guess.
Clipped his shoulder.
They're taking him to the hospital now.
He should be out in a few hours.
When can we get home? Look, I want to see my daughter.
As soon as the airport's open, we'll get you guys out of here.
Okay, when is that gonna be? I mean, I don't really want to be trapped here.
Thank you, Tio.
We can talk about it outside.
Look, I'm sorry.
I just I don't want to feel like I'm trapped here.
- I want to go home.
- I get it, I get it, sweetie.
Just listen to me.
That was bad, and nothing's - gonna prepare you for it.
- Yeah.
But we lived, and we're gonna see Mary again.
You got to hang on to that, baby, 'cause every shit situation I've ever been in, the only thing that kept me going was what I had to be grateful for.
We survived.
[pensive music.]
What happens to him now? He gets sent home under a flag.
- Alone? - Yeah.
That doesn't seem right.
I hate leaving him here.
Look, I'll fly home as soon as I can, okay? You fly home with Kevin, just see if Dobbs can go with you.
I think that'd be a good idea.
- I love you.
- I love you, too.
[tense music.]
- Babe.
- Yeah, yeah? [speaking Mandarin.]
- Go? - Go? - Go go where? - Away from here.
What? What are you talking about? They're cleaning up.
It's not safe for us here anymore.
[sirens wailing.]
[tense music.]
Man, this place is a big, sloppy, wet shit show.
What you got, Gunny? - I got an itch.
- Well, let's scratch it.
Where's your lady? Man, they went back to the hotel, and Tio's up to her ass in RSO paperwork.
She's gonna be here for the next several hours.
Ali, his lady ain't doing so good, so he went with her.
If it wasn't for the beer, Germany would blow.
Colin, I saw a shooter.
A long gun.
He hit Kevin, and then hit the vest to cover it.
- That's not usually their MO.
- These guys usually just go boom.
Well, then how'd that last asshole detonate the vest? I shot him right through the brainstem.
Brother, I want payback just as much as you do, but even if there was a shooter, how are we gonna find him? - Kevin was on the floor.
- [glass shatters.]
I saw the glass break before he went down.
Based on the height of that window, the shot had to come from down that street.
There's got to be 20 possibilities.
Look at this.
I took this right after the attack.
See anything? Top floor no window, no curtains, and now they're back.
Trajectory's right.
He ain't gonna be there.
Yeah, but he might have left something behind.
Let's go.
Danke.
This is it.
Whatever it is, it's creepy.
There's paint chips.
Yeah, he was here.
He hung a screen.
So, 200-plus meters.
Suppressed rifle.
This guy was the backup.
I don't know, man.
Tiny holes and paint chips ain't exactly a smoking gun.
Yeah.
Oh, God damn it.
She must have surprised him.
It's gonna take the police ten seconds to figure out this wasn't a suicide.
Let's not be here when they do.
[gunfire echoing.]
Underneath the bed, all right? - I'm scared.
- Come on.
You can't come out until Mommy comes back for you, okay? Promise me.
Promise.
[gasps.]
[phone rings.]
- Yes? - Mrs.
Swagger, I am sorry to report the airport is still closed.
No flights are available.
Okay, when is it gonna open back up? They do not know.
Why am I approving air transport from Frankfurt? Is this tied to the terrorist attack? Yes, ma'am.
I have friends who are over there.
- They need to get home.
- What friends? - Julie Swagger, ma'am.
- Absolutely not.
- Ma'am, if I can explain - Let me explain.
Howard Utey was tracking to be the director one day.
Now he'll be lucky if he ever gets an office with windows again.
I didn't have a choice with you, Memphis.
You had to go somewhere, and I drew the short straw.
Hey! I did my job.
You got lucky, starting with Bob Lee Swagger landing on a car right in front of you.
Get back to your paperwork.
Let's pick up some supplies and get on the move.
- You okay? - Yeah.
- You sure? - You just seem a little Run! - Stay down, stay down.
- [gunfire.]
[dramatic music.]
Go, go! - You okay? - Yeah.
Keep your head down low.
[people screaming.]
Head down, go! Run.
- I don't know, a belt? - Make a tourniquet.
- I can't feel it.
- That's the shock.
I'm gonna get you someplace safe.
- Okay.
- [groans.]
- All right, come on.
- I'm gonna get you out of here.
Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
[Lin groaning.]
- Gonna tighten it.
- [shouts and groans.]
- You need a doctor.
- Oh, no, no, no, no.
[speaking Mandarin.]
I'll find someone who can help you.
- I'll survive this.
- I promise.
Let's just get some place safe, give me a day or two of rest, and then I'll be good as new, okay? All right? [speaking Mandarin.]
Don't forget it.
Look, we got to go.
Memphis.
I hear you need a better travel agent.
Jesus, how could you possibly know that? Are you bugging my office? Your office is too boring to bug.
What would I learn, how your solitaire game is going? Meet me at the Hay-Adams in 20 minutes.
- You don't have an office? - Take a seat.
I can have Julie Swagger in the air in 90 minutes.
Email these to her.
Tell her to bring them to Ramstein.
There's a C-17 fueling up.
It'll be waiting for her.
U doing this out of the kindness of your heart, or is this you trying to get me to work for you? Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
They're never gonna let you out of that office, Nadine.
You must know that by now.
I did everything right.
They don't care.
But I do.
You really think some fanatic on a long gun's gonna take the time to clean up? Look around here.
They don't give a shit about bodies or evidence.
I can't deal with your bullshit, Swagger.
This is the second time they called me down here for questioning.
You're not in charge, you're not a cop, and what the hell are you doing anyway? You have any idea how deep this shit would be if they caught you there? Those assholes killed Kevin.
And we killed them.
- It sucks - Staff Sergeant.
Okay? But it's over.
- What's up? - [scoffs.]
- Give her a break, man.
- Kevin was killed by a sniper who detonated the vest to cover it up.
From the BKA they found it on one of the attackers.
You were right about one thing, a bunch of terrorists looking to kill some Marines.
- Not some Marines.
- They were after us.
Why? I have no idea, but we better stick together until we do.
[phone buzzes.]
- Hey, where are you? - Well, our flights were all messed up, so I called our guardian angel.
- Memphis? - Yeah.
She somehow got us a military transport, so we're headed there right now and Yusuf is with us.
Do you have any idea when you're coming home? Dobbs and I are gonna go check on Rodriguez at the hospital.
Hopefully we're on a plane tomorrow.
What about Kevin? Not leaving without him.
Well, hurry home, okay? We need you.
I promise I will, baby.
Love you.
Love you too.
Sprechen sie American? What's your deal? They're moving you.
Really? Your place? No, Landstuhl.
[groans.]
Transfer just came.
[indistinct radio chatter.]
Hey, you sure you know where you're going? Sehr gut, ja.
[chuckles.]
"Sehr gut, ja.
" Yeah.
[tense music.]
[gasps and screams.]
[grunting.]
It's a new driver, yeah? Danke.
His phone's going straight to voicemail.
Yeah, the hospital says a transfer order came in.
New driver.
Had all the proper I.
D.
- They can't reach him either.
- Son of a bitch.
We got to call Tio and tell her we need her now.
We don't have any authority here, Swagger.
We don't need authority.
We need information.
Hey.
Well, whoever this is, he's good.
Hospital security sent this to the police.
He never showed his face.
- That's him.
- Jesus.
- No denying it now.
- This wasn't terrorism.
It was murder.
We're being hunted.
