[horse chuffs.]
[theme music playing.]

All right.
You ready to try it again? [Lucky.]
Steady, Spirit.
Steady.
Nice! Just straighten your back leg.
[gasps.]
Whoa! [grunts.]
[chuffs and whinnies.]
-Sorry, boy.
-[bell rings.]
Is that the church bell? But it's Saturday.
Hmm.
Must be a town meeting.
We've got to get to the school.
School? But it's Saturday.
Just come on! How come they don't just ring the school bell? The church bell's louder.
It carries for miles.
[Al.]
Looks like we got a blizzard blowing toward us.
So get the word out to bring in all the cows and horses.
[woman.]
And sheep.
And sheep.
Why isn't the mayor telling us this? Well, that's the other thing.
Seems the mayor is laid up, sick.
Frontier Flu is going around.
[crowd murmuring.]
Ahem! As first daughter of Miradero, I am happy to answer any questions you may have in my father's stead.
I think my horse got it.
This morning his eyes were all crusted and goopy.
Eww.
I meant questions about leadership or fashion, not-- eww.
Horses can't get the flu.
But you should probably see the vet.
Look, folks, Frontier Flu is dangerous, but Doc's got everyone with the symptoms quarantined, so as long as we don't spread it, it'll be gone in a couple of days.
Hey! Where is Doc Wilkins? He's got the flu, too.
[crowd murmuring.]
Everyone, please, listen.
A special train is on its way with enough medicine for a full outbreak.
So until it gets here, let's all just keep calm.
[woman.]
Oh, thank goodness.
And to that end, I shall now sing an inspirational song to help us through this crisis.
When the night is cold And the sky is gray When you're in a terrible fix, oh I've got just the way To brighten your day Snips, where's Abigail? Stay back.
I've got the flu.
No one is supposed to see me.
[neighs.]
Except Boomerang.
He really misses me.
Well, we miss you, too.
-We brought you some cookies.
-Stop! Don't come any closer.
But how can we get these to you? They're your favorites.
[Abigail.]
Snickerdoodles? Oh, I know.
Give them to Boomerang.
He can pass them over to me.
No way! He'd gobble them all up.
Aww, we can trust Boomerang.
He's a noble, honorable horse who only wants what's best for Abigail.
[chuffs.]
Thank you, Boomerang.
Your reward, good sir.
[sneezes.]
[whinnies.]
Ooh, cookies.
[Lucky.]
Well, feel better.
-Bye.
-Bye.
Get ready for a getaway, Señor Carrots.
[Abigail.]
Snips, you can't come in here.
I'm quarantined.
[Snips.]
Oops.
Forgot! [Abigail.]
Hey! Get back here! Can't! You're "quartertined"! -[Señor Carrots brays.]
-Yeah! [crunching.]
Insubordination! [Bianca and Mary Pat.]
Snips! -Get him! -Get the cookies! [gasps.]
Leave me alone! Get back here, Snips! -I will get those cookies! -Come back here! [all laughing.]
You just smile Oh, my brothers and sisters, smile All you misses and misters, smile [Snips.]
Help! Them girls are after me! [sneezes.]
Ack.
They gave me cooties! [Cora.]
Ah, there.
A bowl of my proven restorative.
Chicken soup will set you right in no time.
[knock on door.]
[goose squawks.]
Hi, Lucky.
I heard your father was sick, and I wanted to check on him.
[Cora.]
Lucky, who is it? It's my teacher.
In my house.
Again.
Hello, Kate.
Guess you heard the quarantine didn't work.
Oh, well, half the town is laid out.
Thank you, Snips.
And it's only getting worse.
But I brought you some of my special chicken soup.
[Cora.]
How very thoughtful.
But as you can see, I've got everything under control here.
[Miss Flores.]
Are you sure? I must say, you're looking a little peaked.
I was about to say the same thing, dear.
You're positively green.
-I feel fine.
-As do I.
[sighs.]
[Jim.]
Uh Hey, boy.
[Turo sniffling.]
Hi, Turo! Hey, Lucky.
Glad to see the Frontier Flu didn't get you.
Yeah, I guess I'm immune.
Me too.
-[moans.]
-Turo! You should be home in bed.
But Pru is sick, too.
And so are her parents.
So there's no one else to feed these guys.
There's me! You go home, Turo.
-I'll take care of all the horses.
-You will? Of course.
Now feel better.
And don't worry! [moans.]
[snoring.]
-[chuffs.]
-Huh? [Turo sniffles.]
[door creaks.]
And don't you worry, either.
Your human friends are going to be just fine.
Now, who's hungry? -[horses neigh.]
-[Señor Carrots brays.]
[sighs.]
Oh, Lucky.
No, let me get that.
[Cora coughing.]
Nonsense, you're a guest.
Plus, I know how Jim takes his tea.
[Jim.]
Oh! What time is it? The train with the medicine, it's arriving any minute.
I've got to go meet it.
What? You're too sick to go out! Just got to put on my boots.
Dad, stay here.
I'll go meet the train and get the medicine.
No, I'll stay here, and you go.
[Lucky.]
Be right back! Come on, Spirit.
Miradero's counting on us.
I bet we're the only people in town who aren't sick.
[Lucky.]
Maricela? What are you doing here? As first daughter of Miradero, it's my responsibility to take official receipt of the medicine and deliver it to Dr.
Wilkins.
That's okay.
I promised my dad I'd get it.
You can go.
I'm not going anywhere.
I'm the acting mayor of this town.
I'm in charge.
Well, I'm the acting railroad chief, so I'm in charge.
Ugh.
See here, Lucky Prescott.
I'm taking that shipment as soon as the train gets here.
Not if I beat you to it, you won't.
[Maricela huffs.]
[Lucky grunts.]
[clock ticking.]
-[moans.]
-[birds cawing.]
Huh? [thunder rumbling.]
Lucky, as acting railroad chief, you should be embarrassed! Trains are supposed to run on time.
JP and Sons Railroad always does.
Where are you going? [Lucky.]
Something must be wrong.
I'm riding out to meet the train.
-Not without me, you're not.
-What? You just want to hog all the glory for saving Miradero, but I'm not going to let you.
I'm coming, too.
How? You don't ride.
You hate horses.
I do not hate horses.
I just think they have their proper place.
Or more to the point, I think ladies have their proper place, and it is not astride a horse! Then how are you planning to keep up? [gasps.]
[Maricela.]
Good horse! Go, horse! [Lucky.]
His name is Junipero.
[sighs.]
Well, I wish "Junipedro" would move a little faster.
We'd all be moving faster if you hadn't insisted on coming along.
Oh! I'm the one letting you come along! This is official town business! My dad, aunt and friends all need medicine.
This is not town business.
It's my business.
Well my family's sick, too.
[Maricela.]
What are you doing? [lisping.]
Catching snowflakes! This snow is going to make for a great snowball fight when everyone gets better.
I wouldn't know.
I've never been in a snowball fight.
Seriously? [sighs.]
All the other kids assume I'd hate it, so they never invite me-- -[snowball splats.]
-Oh! Let's play! Ugh! That was horrible! I hate it! [whinnies.]
[sighs.]
Juno! Why are you stopping? -Why are they stopping? -The tunnel! If the train comes while we're in it -Then we can't go through it! -We have to.
What if the train with the medicine is stuck on the other side? Without it, people could die.
But if we go in, we could die.
Oh, I know! If a train is coming, the rails will make a humming noise.
[chuffs.]
[sighs.]
I suppose you must know these sorts of things when your family owns the railroad.
Actually, I read it in a Boxcar Bonnie mystery.
I can't believe I'm trusting my life to something you read in some dumb book.
-Shh! -Don't shush me! [hisses.]
Okay.
Let's do this.
[neighs.]
-Lucky? -Yes? Just making sure you're still there.
It's so dark in here, I can't see where we're going.
It's okay.
All we have to do is follow the tracks.
As long as Spirit and Junipero can feel them, we'll be all right.
-[chuffs.]
-[Maricela gasps.]
-[horses neigh.]
-[Maricela yelps.]
[gasping.]
Hyah! -[horses neigh.]
-[Maricela yelps.]
Whoa, boy! [pants and grunts.]
Oh, no.
[engineer exhales.]
[Maricela.]
Lucky? What's going on? [medicine bottles clinking.]
[Lucky.]
Engineer's hurt.
We've got to get him and the medicine back to Miradero.
Move the cart over.
I'm going to see if there are any passengers.
[grunts.]
[neighing.]
[neighing.]
[gasps.]
[grunting.]
[lock clattering.]
[neighing.]
I get it.
I get it, boy.
[Maricela.]
What's happening? I'll be right back.
[neighs.]
[grunts.]
[grunts.]
Help me! -Me? -Yes! [neighs.]
I know, Spirit! Let's go, Maricela! Get his shoulders! -[Maricela grunts.]
-I'm coming, boy! [grunts.]
You've got to take the engineer and the medicine to Miradero.
What? There's a boxcar full of horses trapped.
And they're gonna freeze in this storm! But-- but I could help you! The engineer's really hurt.
He's got to get to a doctor right away.
Spirit and I will free these horses and be right behind you.
You want me to go back alone? You won't be alone.
You'll be with Junipero.
[neighs.]
We don't have time to argue.
The blizzard is coming.
I can't! Maricela, you are the first daughter of Miradero.
Do your duty.
I'll race to Dr.
Wilkins.
Hee-haw, Junipero! It's okay, Junipero.
Turo needs you.
He's waiting for this medicine.
[neighs.]
-[neighs.]
-[lock clattering.]
[grunting.]
[neighing.]
When the night is cold And the sky is gray When you're in a terrible fix I've got just the way To brighten your day It's the simplest of simplest tricks You just smile [grunting.]
Spirit, come here! We've got to lift the door back on its runner! -[chuffs, neighs.]
-Lift it! -[door clangs.]
-Yeah! We did it! [grunts.]
Round them up, Spirit.
[neighing.]
[horse neighs.]
Get them in a line! [neighing.]
-[chuffing.]
-Okay.
Let's just get us all tied together so no one gets lost.
Okay, boy.
Take us home.
[Maricela.]
It's okay.
We're nearly there.
Good horse.
I'm going to have Cook make a special dinner for you as a reward.
-Do horses like quiche? -[chuffs.]
[gasping.]
Lucky? [gasps.]
Lucky? We're almost there.
Then it's a straight shot home.
[whinnies.]
[neighs.]
You're not scared, are you, fella? [chuffs.]
Me neither.
We'll just follow the tracks, and we can't get lost.
[whinnies.]
We're here! We made it! Dr.
Wilkins! Dr.
Wilkins! Maricela! What are you doing? Is Lucky with you? We went to find the train.
We got the medicine! And there's an injured man.
Maricela, where's Lucky? See, there was a boxcar full of horses.
They were going to freeze.
[gasps.]
[Maricela.]
She's right behind me.
She's right behind me with the horses.
Lucky We had to get the medicine back, and this man needs help.
She made me leave her.
-She told me to go! -It's okay, Maricela.
You did the right thing.
Where are you going? You need medicine.
[Jim.]
I've got to go look for her.
[grunts.]
[Maricela gasps.]
Mr.
Prescott! Dr.
Wilkins! Dr.
Wilkins! Help! [neighs.]
-[horse neighs.]
-[gasps.]
Hold on to this, Spirit.
I'm going to see what happened.
[chuffs.]
[chuffs.]
[gasps.]
Oh, no.
-Easy, boy.
Easy.
-[neighs.]
-[neighs.]
-[grunts.]
-[neighing.]
-[grunting.]
-[grunts.]
-[chuffs.]
There you go.
Don't worry.
We'll be home soon, where there's oats and hay and a nice warm stable.
[Spirit neighing.]
Spirit? -[chuffs.]
-Spirit? Oh, Spirit.
Hyah! Come on, boy.
[neighs.]
What's wrong, boy? [whinnies.]
That's right, boy.
Just follow the tracks.
[neighs.]
Oh, no! Uh We're off the track? We're lost.
[horse neighs.]
We did it! Lucky's dad is okay, and Doc says everyone else will be, too.
And I'm talking to you like you can understand English.
[neighs.]
But I couldn't have done it without you.
-Thank you! -[chuffs.]
Now, come on.
Let's go find Lucky.
[neighs.]
Oh, no! We can't go out there.
There's no way we'll find her, even if we stick to the tracks.
Lucky's not going to be able to see her way back.
Lucky! [neighs.]
-Lucky! -[wind howling.]
Lucky! [panting.]
We've got to find the tracks, Spirit! [whinnies.]
I don't know where we are, boy.
I don't I don't know what to do.
[whinnies.]
[chuffs.]
[bell ringing faintly.]
-What is it? -[chuffs.]
Spirit? [bell ringing distantly.]
The church bell! You can hear it, can't you, Spirit? [neighs.]
We can follow it home.
[grunting.]
[bell continues ringing.]
Keep going, Spirit.
[neighs.]
[bell ringing.]
[panting.]
Lucky, where are you? [grunts.]
[Lucky.]
Maricela! Maricela! [Maricela.]
Lucky? [neighs.]
Lucky, how could you do that to me? I felt so guilty for leaving you there! That's okay.
Because you asked me to, which you had no right to do! -You scared me so much, and-- and -[chuffs.]
And you smell like horses! [laughs.]
I'm happy to see you, too.
