Lucky and the Price of Freedom

1 [horse whinnies.]
[horse chuffs.]
[theme music playing.]
I'm gonna ride I'm riding free So come along, let's go along Come on the journey with me I'm gonna ride I'm riding free As long as I am here with you I feel the spirit within me - Yeah, eh, eh - Yeah, eh, eh, eh - Yeah, eh, eh - Yeah, eh, eh, eh - Yeah, eh, eh - Yeah, eh, eh, eh, eh, eh Ooh, a horse race! With a $500 prize! Not just any horse race.
The Tarrell Circuit.
What's the Tarrell Circuit? Only the most famous horse-racing circuit around.
And our little town has finally gotten big enough to become a stop on it.
[horse neighing.]
Then I guess me and Spirit will be famous, too, 'cause if there's a race, we're gonna win it.
[neighs.]
[Turo.]
I bet you would, Lucky, except maybe not this one.
Professional riders from all over the country race the Tarrell Circuit-- men who earn their living racing.
And we'll leave them all in the dust.
Come on, pals, let's go sign up.
-Whoo-hoo! -Yeah! All right! [horse neighs.]
-Well, hello, girls.
-Hey, Dad.
[Abigail.]
Hi, Mr.
Granger.
What you doing? As the town's largest purveyor of horses, I've been entrusted by the Racing Commission to design the course.
Then Spirit is going to win it for sure! He knows this land better than anyone.
Sign us up.
Well, see, Lucky [sighs.]
There's just one thing.
Ain't no girls allowed to ride.
Besides, that crazy fleabag of yours would be a waste of the entry fee.
[growls.]
[Grayson.]
Hmm.
There you go, Granger.
Be sure to come watch me and Xerxes win, little girl.
-[neighs.]
-Hyah! [chuffs.]
Girls aren't allowed to race? Look, I know you all can ride, and I sure am proud of you, but the thing is, I don't make the rules.
The Tarrell Racing Commission does, and Miradero wants their business.
-So -[Pru.]
Are you kidding? That's not fair! No, it's not, but that's just how it is.
But why? Give me one good reason why girls aren't allowed.
Safety, propriety, tradition.
It's a dumb tradition.
You know Spirit and I are as good as anyone else, so why can't we prove it? Maybe instead of complaining about what you can't do, you should be grateful for what you can.
Why, when I was your age, the very thought of a girl hopping on a horse and gallivanting about like you do was unheard of.
But that was a million years ago.
Oh, honestly, it most certainly was not.
Lucky, there are some things in this world you simply can't change.
One day you'll understand.
You can fight and fight, but the only one you'll hurt is yourself.
You're just one girl.
And for the first time, you're making me wish I was a boy.
[Lucky.]
I think this is gonna work.
You know, the Saddle Club puts on a race for women in the summer.
You could enter that.
Although it's not so much a race as a ride through a rose garden.
With a really nice lunch afterward.
[Lucky.]
No! This is definitely gonna work.
What do you think? Julian's jacket is a little big, but do I look like a boy? Well If I squint really hard and you stay in the shadows, then maybe? Nope, it's gone.
Oh, it's back! [deep voice.]
Hey, now, I'm a big old boy.
[Pru.]
Stop right there.
The way you're walking-- boys don't walk like that.
And when you talk, you still sound like Lucky, not like Boy Lucky.
Bucky? Lucko? Blucky? They'll see it's you from a mile off.
[normal voice.]
So what do I do? You want me to teach you how to act like a boy? Please, Turo.
You're the best of all of us at being a boy.
[Turo.]
Thanks? Just give Lucky some tips.
Uh, okay.
Well boys open the door for girls.
You never open the door for us.
And boys always stand when a lady comes in the room.
[scoffs.]
You never stand when we come in.
You're sitting right now.
[sighs.]
Look, Turo, what I mean is how do boys act around other boys? You know, like spitting.
[spits.]
And scratching.
And swaggering all around.
But I don't swagger or spit or scratch.
At least not in public.
[sighs.]
There's got to be a way to convince people you're a boy.
[horse neighs.]
Maybe you could wear an eye patch? [chuffs, neighs.]
Look, just stay on Spirit, don't talk to anyone and wear this.
Presenting Mr.
Lucky.
-[girls gasp.]
-[horse chuffs.]
Wow! -Courtesy of Junipero.
-[neighs.]
-Brilliant! -Turo, you did it! -Ready to win the race, Spirit? -[neighs.]
-[Abigail.]
Uh-oh.
-What? Spirit-- everyone will recognize him.
Don't worry, Lucky.
We'll disguise him, too.
[neighs, chuffs.]
-[chattering.]
-[horse neighs.]
[horse chuffs.]
[man.]
I'm taking bets until the starting gun goes off.
I'll put 50 on the bay.
Five-to-one the chestnut's the winner.
[Cora.]
Huh? [gasps.]
The chestnut is quite formidable, but I wouldn't discount Mr.
Grayson's Xerxes.
I thought you didn't like horses, Cora.
At a safe remove, I like them very much indeed.
I am a great judge of horse flesh.
I have predicted the outcome of more than one race.
[laughs.]
I don't believe I've ever seen Cora so invigorated.
You should see her play bingo.
[Al.]
Two minutes till post! [sighs.]
Okay this is it.
Turo's gonna bring Spirit over.
Pru and I will make sure your dad doesn't notice you're gone.
Thanks, Abigail.
Hey, Lucky.
[deep voice.]
Yes, ma'am? I'm so proud of you.
[horse neighs.]
[Grayson.]
Nag's looking good.
With the winnings I make today, I'm fixing to buy a few horses.
I'll need new tack for all of them, so-- No.
No, thank you.
[chuckles.]
Business is business.
Not between us.
[chuffs.]
Bah! [chuffs.]
[scoffs.]
[chuffs.]
Come on, Junipero, let's go get Spirit.
Hyuh! Ladies and gentlemen, mares and stallions [laughs.]
I would like to welcome all of you to Miradero's very first Tarrell Overland Horse Race! [cheering.]
Where's Lucky? -With Spirit.
-Right there! Hi, Lucky! Hmm.
[Al.]
I expect all the gentlemen racing today to observe the rules and be good sportsmen.
-[horse chuffs.]
-[Spirit neighs.]
Settle your horse there.
Spirit, what are you doing? Save it for the race.
[chuffs.]
All righty.
Riders, take your places! [both grunt.]
[gasps.]
[gasps.]
-Oh! -Cora? Are you all right? Uh why [stammers.]
Just a moment.
-[Pru gasps.]
-Uh-oh.
Hmm.
[harrumphs.]
One [grunts.]
$100! -Two -On Luck-- On the strange little man with the mustache and the warhorse.
-[Al.]
Three! -[gunshot.]
-[Grayson.]
Hyah! -[horses neigh.]
-[man.]
Let's go! Let's go! -[Grayson.]
Hyah! Hyah! Go, go, go, Mustache Man! Pru? Abigail? Where's Lucky? Uh, right now it looks like she's towards the back of the pack.
But I'm sure she'll move up fast.
I can see where she gets her lustrous mustache.
[man.]
Yeah, come on! Come on! Come on! -[Lucky.]
Hyah, hyah! -[man.]
Let's go! Let's go! Come on! [horse neighs.]
[men shouting.]
Look for an opening, Spirit, or we'll never catch up.
[shouting continues.]
[Spirit neighs.]
Aah! [Lucky.]
Yes! [Grayson.]
Hyah! Ha ha ha! [Lucky.]
Yah! [man.]
Yee-ha! [man.]
Come on! Hyah! [Spirit chuffs.]
[both grunt.]
-[man laughs.]
-[gasps.]
Aah! [gasps.]
[man shouting.]
[grunting.]
-[neighs.]
-Ah, that's okay, boy.
We'll make up the distance.
We just have to get down Taylor's Trail.
Oh, no! [sighs.]
It's okay.
We can do it.
-[Grayson.]
Hyah! -[horse neighs.]
[Grayson cackles.]
-[man shouts.]
-[horse neighs.]
[gasps.]
Hold on.
Ah! Watch out! [Spirit neighs.]
We made it down Taylor's Trail! Whoo-hoo! [Grayson.]
Come on! Come on! [man.]
Yah! [Al.]
There they are! This is a close one, folks.
[crowd murmuring.]
[gasps.]
-Wha-- -Excuse me.
-Thank you.
-[grumbles.]
-Run, Spirit! Run! -Huh? -Give me that! -[Cora grunting.]
-Let go! -You let go! Well, at least tell me what's happening.
-[both scream.]
-[Cora.]
Jim! [Grayson.]
Hyah! Get on, now! Hyah! Hyah! Ha ha ha! Steady, boy, steady.
The trail will open back up.
[man grunting.]
Hyah! Yah! Come on! Come on, let's go! Whoo! Come on, boy! Whoo! [man.]
Huh? -Huh? -[Lucky.]
What's the matter, huh? You've never seen a girl ride a horse before? [grunting.]
[Lucky.]
Hey! [grunts.]
Get back, you scrub! -Get back, you scrub! -Aah! Aah! [grunts.]
[neighs, chuffs.]
-[Xerxes neighs.]
-[Grayson.]
Get on, Xerxes! -Yah! Yah! Yah! -[Spirit neighs.]
[grunts.]
Don't you slow down on me, now.
Come on, let's go! Let's go! Here they come! Oh, but it ain't over yet! Now's our chance.
We'll outrun them in the straightaway.
Come on, Spirit.
Come on, boy! Do your thing! [crowd cheering.]
Go, Lucky! I mean, go, mustachioed stranger.
[Grayson.]
Get on, Xerxes! Yah! Hyah! Hyah! Come on! [cheering.]
[Grayson.]
Don't you slow down on me now.
-Come on, let's go! Let's go! -[Lucky.]
Go! -[all gasping.]
-[man.]
Whoa! [Spirit neighs.]
-[gasps.]
-[crowd cheering.]
[Lucky.]
Whoo-hoo! [cheering continues.]
[Pru.]
Yeah! Yes! We have a winner! [gasps.]
-[Lucky giggles.]
-[Grayson grumbles.]
Wait! That ain't no rider! That's a girl! [all gasp.]
That's right.
Lucky and Spirit.
[all gasp.]
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Now, just hold on there.
Girls can't race! Looks like we can and better than you.
-[laughing.]
-[grumbles.]
I'm afraid he's right.
I'm sorry, Lucky.
You're disqualified.
[gasps.]
I declare the winner of the race to be Harlan Grayson! [applause.]
What you got to say about that, girlie? [Lucky.]
I wasn't racing for the prize.
I did it to prove that girls should be allowed to race and that Spirit is the fastest horse in the world.
-Whoo-hoo! -Yeah! So I hope the officials change the rules so next year Spirit and I can beat you again.
[chuckles.]
I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad you didn't listen to me.
I don't know if I should hug you or punish you.
I'll take the hug.
[Lucky.]
The scariest part was when we were going down Taylor's Trail, but we did it.
[Grayson.]
Excuse me, miss.
-That was some fine riding you did.
-[Spirit chuffs.]
Thank you.
And that is a mighty fine horse.
He sure is.
Well, I'd like to buy him.
He's not for sale, especially not to you.
That right? Not even for $1,000? -[all gasp.]
-[Abigail.]
What? Not for a million! Spirit is a wild horse.
He's free, and that's how he'll stay.
[Spirit chuffs.]
[Grayson grumbles.]
[Lucky.]
We really showed 'em, huh, boy? Everyone said girls can't race.
But with you by my side, there's nothing I can't do.
-[whinnies.]
-[giggles.]
See you tomorrow.
[Spirit neighs.]
[sighs.]
-Hi, buddies.
-[neighs.]
Hey! These are for Spirit.
[whinnies.]
-All right, you can have one.
-[crunches.]
[giggles.]
You too, girl.
[Spirit neighs.]
-[cackles.]
-[Spirit neighs.]
Spirit? -[neighs.]
-[gasps.]
What are you doing? Let him go! [grunts.]
Just hold on there, missy.
-[Lucky grunts.]
-[Spirit neighs.]
That's my horse.
You're crazy, girl.
I just wrangled this wild horse fair and square.
He's mine.
-[grunts.]
-Ow! You little savage! Get off me! [grunts.]
[groans.]
Should've sold him when you had the chance.
Now git! [Spirit neighs.]
[gasps.]
[neighing.]
Don't worry, Spirit.
-I'll go get help.
-[neighs.]
Dad! Aunt Cora! He's stealing Spirit! -What? -[Cora gasps.]
[horse neighs.]
[Spirit neighs.]
Oh, Spirit.
What have they done to you? Whoa there.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa there.
Get away from my horse.
That's my daughter's horse.
Not by law, he ain't.
Now, see here, Grayson! What business are you in, Mr.
Granger? Horse wrangling.
Funny.
So am I.
So you tell me, I got 20 witnesses that heard her say loud and clear that he wasn't her horse, that he's a wild horse.
And at night, he even runs with a wild herd.
So, by law, that makes him fair game.
Don't it, Granger? -That's about right.
-Dad! But that don't make it just.
My daddy was the judge, not me.
I just wrangle horses.
And this one ought to fetch a real pretty penny.
He's mine! -You can't! -You're a horse thief! Ugly words from such little angels.
Ugly lies.
All right, Grayson, I'll give you a fair price, and you'll have had a good morning's work.
Let the horse go.
No.
-I'll give you 1,000.
-No.
Two thousand.
I don't think I want to sell this horse, especially not to you.
And as I see it, right now you're on my property, uninvited, trespassing.
So I would like you to leave.
Come on.
-No! -[Spirit chuffs.]
I'll never let you go.
I'll never let you go! This isn't over! Come on, Lucky.
-[neighs.]
-[Lucky crying.]
-[Lucky screams.]
-[neighs.]
Spirit! -[grunting.]
-[neighing.]
[Lucky.]
Spirit! -[Lucky screams.]
-[neighs.]
[Pru.]
Don't worry, Lucky.
Our dads are talking to the sheriff.
And I know they're gonna get Spirit back for you.
[horse neighs.]
[chuffs.]
Where are you going? I'm going back, and I'm going to bust Spirit out, just like we did for Junipero.
-But, Lucky -Then you really will be a horse thief.
[Lucky.]
I don't care.
Spirit will be back home with his herd, and that's all that matters.
Even if I get in big trouble and never see Spirit again, at least he'll be free.
Lucky, wait! Don't try to stop me! We're not trying to stop you.
We're coming with you.
[chattering.]
[Lucky.]
Spirit's not there! -[horse neighs.]
-Spirit! Lucky, no! -[metal clanks.]
-[chuckles.]
[gasps.]
Stop! Well, well, I thought I'd be seeing you again.
[chuffs.]
[sighs.]
Where's Spirit? [steam hissing.]
[watch ticking.]
[chuffs.]
[whispers.]
Listen carefully now.
-You hear that? -[train horn blows.]
That is the sound of that fine, valuable stallion on his way to the auction house.
[gasps.]
[train horn blows.]
[Lucky.]
Spirit's on the train! -[neighs.]
-Yah! [horn blows.]
Spirit? [Lucky.]
Spirit! Spirit! [neighing.]
[neighs.]
[Lucky.]
Faster, Sorrel! Please! [Spirit neighs.]
[Spirit neighs.]
Spirit! [neighs.]
-[neighs.]
-[grunts.]
Spirit! No! -[horn blows.]
-[neighing.]
