HE EARNED IT.
- RIGHT DOWN HERE.
NEXT UNIT.
LET'S GO.
- ALL RIGHT, FOLKS.
WE'RE GONNA TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THIS UNIT.
- I DON'T THINK THERE'S ANY SURPRISES HERE.
THIS UNIT DOESN'T LOOK TOO BAD, BUT I DON'T SEE A LOT OF PROFIT.
LITTLE DAVE SHOULD HANG ON TO HIS MONEY.
- LET'S SEE WHAT WE GOT.
WELL, THE--THE TIFFANY-STYLE LAMP IS NICE.
I'M A SUCKER FOR THIS STUFF.
I CAN TELL THIS LAMP ISN'T OLD AND IT'S NOT WORTH MUCH, BUT BASED ON ITS STYLE, THERE MAY BE COLLECTIBLES IN HERE.
I'M GONNA JUMP ON THIS ONE.
- REMEMBER, DO NOT GO INSIDE.
FOLKS, WORK YOUR WAY DOWN.
- I LIKE IT ALREADY.
I SEE SOME GOOD HOUSEHOLD ITEMS.
I SEE A LAMP.
I SEE SOME BOXES.
THERE'S A LOT OF STUFF IN THERE THAT WE COULD SELL AT OUR STORE.
- THE GLOVES ARE COMING OFF.
- AND HERE WE GO.
HOW MUCH? WHAT ARE YOU GONNA PAY? SAY.
HOW MUCH? HOW MUCH? HOW MUCH? WHERE? I GOT 100 RIGHT BACK THERE.
I GOT 100 BUCKS.
[auctioneer speaking rapidly.]
NOW 200.
I GOT 150 RIGHT HERE.
HOW ABOUT 200 RIGHT THERE? NOW 250.
I GOT 200.
- WE GOT IT.
WE GOT IT.
- I SEE THIS GUY JUST COME SPRINTING DOWN THE HALL PAST EVERYBODY.
- 300.
HOW ABOUT 350? I GOT 300 BUCKS.
- I DON'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH HIS ARM.
- 325 RIGHT THERE.
I'VE GOT 325.
- RIGHT HERE.
- [speaking rapidly.]
- YEAH? 325? - 400, SIR.
I'VE GOT 375 THERE.
[speaking rapidly.]
AND 400 GOING TWICE.
AND LAST AND FINAL-- - OVER HERE.
I GOT IT HERE.
- YES, YOU DID! YOU JUST BOUGHT IT FOR 375.
BARRY, THANK YOU.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
- WHAT A WONDERFUL WIN.
IN THIS CASE, GREEN BEATS ORANGE.
- RIGHT DOWN HERE! NEXT UNIT.
LET'S GO! - I COULDN'T WAIT TO GET IN THIS LOCKER, SO I STEP AWAY FROM THE AUCTION TO START THE DIG.
WOW.
THIS? BOAT ANCHOR.
WELL, THIS IS ACTUALLY WHAT DID CATCH MY EYE.
AND I KNEW THAT IT WAS A REPRODUCTION WHEN I SAW IT, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY A PRETTY GOOD REPRODUCTION.
LET'S GIVE THIS A SHOT.
STAND BACK.
OH, BOY.
MORE DIRTY LAUNDRY.
THIS ISN'T THE START I HAD PLANNED.
I THINK THE VOICES IN MY HEAD MAY HAVE LED ME DOWN THE GARDEN PATH.
[laughs.]
THESE I DO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE.
ALL RIGHT, I'M GONNA ASK YOU GUYS A QUESTION.
I WANT AN HONEST ANSWER.
WAS DAVID HESTER BORN WITHOUT A HEART? YEP.
YEP! YEP! DAVID HESTER WAS BORN WITHOUT A HEART.
I MIGHT NOT BE FINDING MY MONEY HERE, BUT AT LEAST MY NEW FRIENDS HAVE CONFIRMED MY SUSPICIONS.
WE'RE TAKING THIS WITH ME RIGHT NOW JUST IN CASE I GO DOWN.
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S CALLED, BUT I ACTUALLY DO REMEMBER SEEING ONE OF THESE.
LIKE, IT WAS AT A PARTY IN THE 1970s.
I FORGET IF THE GUY WAS SMOKING OUT OF IT OR PLAYING IT.
HE WAS PLAYING IT.
[bangs.]
YOU KNOW, IT MIGHT HAVE JUST SOUNDED BETTER IN '74.
[chuckles.]
I'M EXCITED ABOUT THIS INSTRUMENT FROM MY PAST.
I GOT TO GET THIS THING LOOKED AT.
- ALL RIGHT! - WHOA! - WHOA! - IS THAT ONE OF THOSE? - OH, WOW.
- WOW.
- YOU KNOW, I SEE A LOT OF FISHING STUFF IN HERE.
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST LOCKER OF THE DAY.
THIS IS NOT GONNA GO CHEAP.
- I TELL YOU WHAT, MAN.
THIS ONE IS CHOCKED FULL OF SOME GREAT, GREAT STUFF.
I MEAN, I SEE A SLOT MACHINE.
PROBABLY 1960s.
THERE'S A LOT OF GREAT STUFF IN THIS UNIT, BUT I'M AN ARMY OF ONE, BASICALLY.
- OKAY, FOLKS.
- I JUST HOPE I HAVE ENOUGH MONEY IN MY POCKET TO GET IT.
- I LIKE IT.
THERE'S A LOT OF NICE-LOOKING COLLECTIBLES IN THERE.
VERY NICE.
- EVERYBODY'S EXCITED ABOUT THIS UNIT.
THIS MIGHT BE MY CHANCE.
- ALL RIGHT, IF YOU'RE READY TO GO, I'M READY TO GO.
AND HERE WE GO ON NUMBER 20.
AND HOW MUCH MONEY? WHAT'S YOUR PLEASURE? WHAT ARE YOU GONNA PAY? SAY AND HOW MUCH? HOW MUCH, DERRICK? $1,000 BILL! I GOT 1,000 THERE.
HOW ABOUT 1,250? [speaking rapidly.]
AND I GOT 1,200.
[speaking rapidly.]
[speaks indistinctly.]
- 2,500! - 2,500.
WANT TO BID 3,000? [auctioneering.]
I'VE GOT 3,500 GOING ONCE.
- YEAH! - 4,000 BUCKS.
I GOT 4,000 HERE.
I GOT 4,000 BUCKS.
[auctioneering.]
I'VE GOT 4,250 GOING TWICE.
LAST AND FINAL CALL.
- HE'S GETTING PRETTY HIGH.
THIS IS ALMOST STARTING TO MAKE ME A LITTLE NERVOUS.
- 4,750, SIR.
[auctioneer speaking rapidly.]
$5,000 GOING ONCE.
I GOT 5,000 BUCKS.
I'VE GOT 5,450 GOING ONCE.
IT MIGHT NOT BE HIM.
WANT TO BID 5,650 WHERE? I GOT 5,550.
LAST AND FINAL CALL AT 5,600.
[speaking rapidly.]
[auctioneering.]
WHERE? SOLD IT YOUR WAY.
DOUBLE DAVE.
- THAT'S LIKE GOING UP TO A BLACKJACK TABLE AND THROWING $5,500 DOWN ON ONE HAND AND JUST STAND THERE AND WATCH THE CARDS FLIP.
- THE AUCTION'S OVER.
WE'RE DONE HERE.
- [bleep.]
DAVE, DUDE.
HE GOT ON MY NERVES TODAY.
- AWW, YOU'RE SAD.
- I AM.
I'M PISSED.
I ALWAYS LEAVE DEPRESSED WHEN WE DON'T BUY A UNIT.
I SAW SOME GREAT UNITS TODAY.
I MEAN, THOSE GUYS ARE PROBABLY GONNA DO REALLY WELL.
WE STUCK TO OUR GAME PLAN AND AT THE END, WE JUST DIDN'T BRING ENOUGH CASH.
- ALL RIGHT.
I JUST SPENT $5,550.
PUT MY ENTIRE LIFE SAVINGS IN IT.
ALL I CAN DO IS HOPE FOR THE BEST.
IT'S RIGHT HERE.
- JUNK.
MISCELLANEOUS.
IT'S ALL GOOD SWAP MEET STUFF.
- THIS IS ALL JUST, YOU KNOW, DOLLAR ITEMS.
- WELL, NOT NECESSARILY.
YOU KNOW, YOU GOT A LOT OF-- YOU KNOW, YOU'VE GOT ALL THESE DVDs.
RIGHT THERE.
THAT'S $50 RIGHT THERE.
THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE YOUR LIVING.
A LOT OF THESE ARE BLU-RAY, SO THAT'S GOOD.
AGAIN, THERE'S ANOTHER IS THAT--THAT'S A ROLEX BOX RIGHT THERE.
THESE ROLEX BOXES ALONE THOUGH, THEY SELL FOR ABOUT 200 BUCKS APIECE JUST FOR THE EMPTY BOX.
- MY DAD'S TRYING TO GIVE ME A LITTLE BIT OF HOPE HERE, BUT IT'S STILL NOT LOOKING VERY GOOD.
- THIS IS ALL GREAT.
ALL THIS, DAVE, SEE? THIS IS THE STUFF THAT'S GONNA ADD UP FOR YOU.
HOLY [bleep.]
.
YOU GOT ALL KINDS OF SPORTS STUFF IN HERE.
ROGER CLEMENS.
- MICHAEL JORDAN.
- MARK MCGWIRE.
THERE'S A WILLIE MAYS CARD.
- SCOTTIE PIPPEN ROOKIE.
- JOHN ELWAY, SIGNED.
THAT BOX THERE, I'D SAY EASILY ANOTHER 300 TO 500 BUCKS RIGHT THERE IN THAT BOX.
- OOH, MORE CARDS.
- MORE CARDS.
THIS LOCKER DEFINITELY TURNED OUT SOME GOOD ITEMS.
HE JUST MIGHT GET HIS MONEY BACK.
I MEAN, LOOK AT THIS.
THESE ARE-- LOOK AT THE PRICE RIGHT HERE.
THEY'RE $129 EACH.
THAT'S $500 WORTH OF POLES RIGHT THERE.
GRAB ME A BLANKET.
BE CAREFUL WITH THESE FISHING POLES.
I DON'T WANT TO MESS ANY OF THIS UP.
THIS ROOM HERE JUST KEEPS GIVING AND GIVING, MAN.
WE'LL SEE WHAT WE GOT HERE.
- NICE TV.
NICE.
- 1,000 BUCKS RIGHT THERE.
BE CAREFUL.
THERE'S SOMETHING UP HERE.
THERE'S SOMETHING UP THERE.
HOLY [bleep.]
.
NOW WE'RE TALKING.
- HOW OLD DO YOU THINK THAT IS? - HOW OLD DO YOU THINK IT IS? YOU TELL ME.
YOU BEEN LOOKING THESE UP FOR ME.
- [sighs.]
AT LEAST 100 YEARS.
- I'D SAY THAT'S CORRECT.
THE REASON YOU CAN TELL IT'S 100 YEARS OLD, OBVIOUSLY, THE BACK OF THE CANVAS HAS A LOT OF AGING.
THE WAY THEY USED TO SPIKE THESE HERE IN THE CORNER GIVES YOU THAT SIGN TOO.
WE CAN LOOK UP THIS ARTIST.
BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THESE ARE CRACKING AND GRAZING A LITTLE BIT.
- HERE'S A LITTLE PUNCTURE THERE.
- WELL, THAT'S OKAY, BECAUSE IF IT'S A GOOD ARTIST, THAT CAN BE REPAIRED.
THIS IS A GOOD LITTLE PAINTING, BUT THE FRAME ALONE I THINK IS WORTH 700 TO 1,000 BUCKS.
- WHOA! WHAT'S THAT ONE? [bleep.]
THERE'S TWO OF 'EM.
- YOU KNOW WHAT? THERE'S TWO SLOT MACHINES IN HERE.
- THAT ONE LOOKS A LOT OLDER.
LET'S GET THIS ONE OUT AND LET'S LOOK AT THAT ONE.
- OKAY.
SLOT MACHINES CAN BE VERY VALUABLE.
THEY CAN RANGE FROM A FEW HUNDRED BUCKS TO TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS.
SO YOU DEFINITELY NEED TO TAKE THESE TO GET APPRAISED.
I'M SHOCKED AT HOW GOOD THIS UNIT'S TURNING OUT TO BE.
DAVE MAY HAVE JUST HIT A HOME RUN ON THESE.
THOSE ARE COOL.
THOSE ARE NICE.
- WOULDN'T YOU RATHER HAVE UNLOADED THIS LOCKER ON A DAY LIKE TODAY? THIS IS THE ONE THAT DAVE DROPPED ON ME.
SOMEHOW I GOT TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET MY MONEY BACK.
- LET'S SEE WHAT'S WORTH ACTUALLY ANYTHING IN HERE.
HONESTLY, I THINK DAVE KIND OF GOT THE BEST OF MY DAD ON THIS ONE.
- SAW THIS THING.
THERE'S A BRAND-SPANKING-NEW FOG MACHINE.
- THERE YOU GO.
- THAT'D BE 40 BUCKS RIGHT THERE.
- YEAH.
- IT IS WHAT I THOUGHT.
THAT'S DEFINITELY, LIKE, A $40 BILL.
- MORE RECORDS? - OH, YEAH.
OKAY, SOME OF THESE RECORDS ARE TWO BUCKS APIECE THAT I'VE SEEN SO FAR.
SOME OF 'EM, YOU'D BE LUCKY TO GET A DOLLAR.
LOOK AT THAT.
THAT'S PROBABLY A 10-- ANOTHER ONE.
THESE ARE GOOD RECORDS.
RIGHT THERE'S ANOTHER 50 BUCKS.
HERE'S ANOTHER 100 CDs, OKAY? DRIVEWAY AND CONCRETE CLEANER.
- EVERY $5 BILL COUNTS.
- EVERY ONE OF THESE IS A $5 BILL, BUD.
I DON'T SEE ANY BIG WOW FACTOR, BUT I DEFINITELY SEE MY MONEY BACK, OKAY? SO WE'RE ALMOST OUT OF HERE, BRANDO.
YEAH! - WHAT'S UP? - GOT SOME KNIVES.
WELL, THAT'S GOOD.
ALL THESE BRASS BEING A COUPLE BUCKS APIECE RIGHT HERE.
IT'S ABOUT 20 BUCKS IN BRASS.
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? I JUST FOUND A DRAWER OF ALL THESE LITTLE KNICKY-KNACK, LIKE, WEIRD THINGS, AND ONE OF THEM'S REAL UNUSUAL.
IT LOOKS LIKE A STRANGE MUSIC BOX OR SOMETHING.
I'M GONNA HAVE TO GET THIS CHECKED OUT.
LET'S CLOSE THIS THING UP.
I THINK WE'RE CLEANED UP.
- I FOUND THIS OBSCURE INSTRUMENT I SAW BEING PLAYED AT A PARTY AGES AGO.
[bangs drum.]
I DON'T REALLY KNOW THE NAME OF IT AND I DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW IT WORKS, BUT I'M GONNA FIND OUT.
THERE THEY ARE.
- HELLO.
- HOW ARE YOU, MAN? I'M BARRY.
- JERRY.
- I BROUGHT IN, UH, SOMETHING I WANTED YOU GUYS TO TAKE A LOOK AT, AND DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE CALLED.
- YEAH, THIS LITTLE INSTRUMENT IS CALLED A WATERPHONE.
IT WAS DEVELOPED AND DESIGNED BY RICHARD A.
WATERS IN THE MID-'70s, WHO PATENTED THIS.
THERE WAS VERY LIMITED OF THESE MADE.
APPROXIMATELY ABOUT 150 OF 'EM.
- WHO PLAYS IT HERE? - UH, HERE, WE'LL TAKE IT OVER TO THE PERCUSSION AREA AND I'LL GIVE YOU A LITTLE DEMONSTRATION.
- YEAH, ALL RIGHT.
GOOD DEAL.
I'M ALREADY STARTING TO GET NOSTALGIC.
- SO THESE WERE MADE BASICALLY AS AN EFFECTS FOR MOTION PICTURES.
[haunting tones.]
IT'S LIKE KIND OF A SCARY-- - YEAH.
- RIGHT BEFORE THE LADY GETS WHACKED - YEAH.
- YOU USUALLY HEAR THIS.
- DO YOU? YEAH.
- PUT A LITTLE WATER IN IT, WHICH SHOULD GIVE YOU A LITTLE MORE WAH-WAH EFFECT.
[warbling haunting tones.]
- YEAH.
HEARING THIS THING BEING PLAYED, IT'S LIKE GOING RIGHT BACK TO THE '70s.
[haunting tones.]
YOU'RE BRINGING BACK SOME FLASHBACKS.
- THIS IS A COPY, UNFORTUNATELY.
[record scratches.]
THIS WAS A COPY MADE BY JACKSON KRALL IN NEW YORK.
THIS IS PROBABLY ON THE MARKET.
WORTH ABOUT $100.
THAT'S $100 OF FUN.
- THEY LAUGHED AT ME, BUT I ENDED UP FINDING SOMETHING UNIQUE AND COOL AND [scoffs.]
THAT'S WHAT I'M HERE FOR.
- I'M HERE AT THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MEDICAL MUSEUM, AND I'M HERE TO GET A SPECIAL DIAGNOSIS.
DR.
WEINSTEIN? - HI.
- I'M DARRELL.
I'M THE ONE THAT SPOKE TO YOU ON THE PHONE.
HOW YOU DOING? - WELL, THANK YOU.
- YOU KNOW, AFTER I FOUND THIS LITTLE MUSIC BOX, I DID SOME RESEARCH.
IT TURNS OUT THAT LITTLE BRASS INSTRUMENT THING I FOUND, IT'S A MEDICAL DEVICE.
WELL, THIS IS WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT.
THIS IS WHAT I FOUND AND - WOW, THAT IS--WOW.
- I'M A LITTLE CURIOUS TO SEE IF THAT IS WHAT WE THINK IT IS.
- IT IS DEFINITELY A BLEEDER.
THEY CALLED THESE SCARIFICATORS.
- I'VE HEARD OF BLEEDERS BEFORE, BUT I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE UP CLOSE.
- THESE WERE MADE ABOUT 150 YEARS AGO.
THE 1850s, 1860s, AND ITS PURPOSE WAS TO DRAW BLOOD.
THE GREEKS BELIEVED THAT THE BODY HAD FOUR DIFFERENT KINDS OF FLUIDS OR HUMORS.
AND IF YOU HAD THESE FLUIDS IMBALANCED, THEN YOU WERE SICK AND THE ONLY WAY YOU COULD GET THEM BACK INTO BALANCE WOULD BE TO GET RID OF THE EXCESS AMOUNT OF ONE OF THEM.
GEORGE WASHINGTON HAD A SERIOUS THROAT INFECTION AND HE DIED BECAUSE HE WAS BLED.
- THIS IS A PIECE OF HISTORY.
- ABSOLUTELY.
- AWESOME.
THIS WAS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING THINGS I'VE EVER FOUND, BUT, YOU KNOW, IT'S TIME TO GET DOWN TO THE BRASS TACKS.
I REALLY GOT TO KNOW WHAT CAN I GET FOR THIS THING? - UH, SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD PROBABLY GO FOR UH FOR ABOUT $500.
- WOW.
I PAID $250 FOR THE LOCKER.
- GOT A GOOD DEAL.
- YOU KNOW, YEAH, I'M HAPPY.
THIS REALLY WORKED OUT BETTER THAN I COULD HAVE HOPED FOR, AND ESPECIALLY WHEN I COULD HAVE REALLY SCREWED MYSELF AT THE AUCTION.
THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SET ALL THIS OUT.
- OH.
- I'M GONNA BE A LITTLE BIT MORE CAREFUL FROM NOW ON.
- WE'RE ON OUR WAY TO SEE MY FRIEND JIM.
SPECIALIZES IN SLOT MACHINES.
HE IS THE EXPERT.
- ALL RIGHT, LET'S SEE WHAT WE GOT.
- SO I'M HOPING THE BEST FOR MY KID.
JIM'S GONNA KNOW THE EXACT VALUE OF HIS MACHINES.
- THIS IS ABOUT A 1960 JENNINGS.
UNFORTUNATELY THIS MACHINE, UH, IS NOT WORTH TOO MUCH MONEY.
IT'S A PLAIN CASE.
YOUR GLASS HAS KIND OF FALLEN IN HERE.
SOME PLASTIC IN IT.
UH, THIS MACHINE IS REALLY ONLY WORTH THE MECHANICAL MECHANISM PARTS.
THE PARTS MAY BE WORTH A COUPLE HUNDRED DOLLARS.
UH, YOU DIDN'T GET A VERY GOOD DEAL ON THIS ONE.
- WELL, WE GOT ONE MORE.
- OH, YEAH.
- SO WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ON THIS ONE? - THIS IS BASICALLY ABOUT A 1933, AND IT'S A WAR EAGLE.
IT'D BE NICE IF YOU HAD A BACK DOOR, BUT YOU DON'T, BUT THAT'S NOT UNCOMMON.
THAT'S HOW IT COMES OUT.
HEY, IT EVEN ALMOST RUNS.
THIS IS A NICE ORIGINAL MACHINE.
A MACHINE LIKE THIS IN THIS CONDITION IS PROBABLY WORTH ABOUT $700.
IF YOU PUT ABOUT 1,500 IN IT, YOU KNOW, I WOULD SAY YOU COULD GET ANYWHERES BETWEEN $3,000 AND $3,500.
- LITTLE DAVE HAS A BIG DECISION TO MAKE.
WELL, WHAT DO YOU THINK, DAVE? - WHY DON'T WE GO AHEAD AND DO THAT? - LET'S DO IT.
- ALL RIGHT, YOU GOT A DEAL.
- PERFECT.
- YOU KNOW, I'M REAL PROUD OF JUNIOR.
HE'S GONNA GET THE SLOT MACHINE RESTORED, AND I THINK HE'S GONNA MAKE A GOOD PROFIT ON THIS UNIT.
narrator: AT THE END OF THE DAY, DAVE JR.
RACKED UP A $1,900 PROFIT.
DARRELL SHEETS BANKED 547 BUCKS ON HIS MEDICAL BLEEDER.
JARROD AND BRANDI LEFT WITH THEIR AUCTION BUDGET INTACT.
AND BARRY WEISS PAID 275 FOR A TRIP BACK TO THE '70s.
AND SPEAKING OF BLEEDERS - YOU LIKE YOUR LIFE, RIGHT? - THAT'S RIGHT.
- YOU SEE HOW BIG I AM? IF THERE'S ANY PAIN, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A-- AM I COMPLAINING A LOT, REUBEN, OR AM I PRETTY NORMAL? - AH, YOU'RE PRETTY NORMAL, MAN.
- JUST LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU PUT IT IN.
THAT WAY I'M NOT ALL FREAKED OUT.
- IT'S DONE.
- WHAT? I NEVER GAVE BLOOD BEFORE.
I DIDN'T KNOW YOU GET LIGHT-HEADED AND BUZZED.
I DON'T KNOW.
I'M NOT SURE IF I LIKED IT OR NOT.
I KNOW IT WAS FREE.
IT WAS A FREE HIGH.
I DIDN'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT.
