The Waterfront Story

Stop it! You know, you kind of remind me of my second husband.
You and Frank used to come here a lot? Seems like a million years ago.
CLIFF: She knows everything.
I'll handle it.
DAVID: Frank's death was no accident.
Hey, help! Help! NARRATOR: Dr.
David Banner.
Physician.
Scientist.
Searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have.
Then an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry.
And now, when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.
The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter.
Mr.
McGee, don't make me angry.
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
The creature is wanted for a murder he didn't commit.
David Banner is believed to be dead.
And he must let the world think that he is dead, until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him.
(GROWLING) MAN 1: Good grief.
MAN 2: Where'd he come from? MAN 2: Let's get out of here.
MAN 1: Well, what about the shipment? MAN 2: Forget it.
Come on.
(SHIP'S HORN SOUNDING) McGEE: I understand you saw the creature yourself.
NIGHTWATCHMAN: Not only saw it, it saved my life.
See, these guys were trying to steal a shipment and I ran to see what was going on.
How many were there? There were two.
These two guys had me down, when this other guy shows up to help me.
Nice-Iooking guy, dark hair.
Then they start to beat him up, and all of a sudden, I don't know where he came from, but there was this great big green guy.
Green? Green.
All right I want to talk to everybody around here who saw the creature.
A bunch of fairy tales, I tell you! Green giants.
First off, Sarah, nobody asked you.
Second of all, Sam Woods ain't the kind to make up fairy tales.
Sam Woods just about lives in a rye bottle.
Well, better late than never.
It's a wonder Sam didn't see a UFO with his green man.
Sarah, is Josie here yet? Nope, but you best be getting started.
Ain't much time till we open.
Yeah, well, that's what I want to talk to her about.
Something's come up.
I have to leave.
Leave? Yes.
You only just got here a couple weeks ago.
Sarah, I know that, but it's It's really important.
Look, I appreciate everything that Josie's done for me.
The job, a place to stay.
But I And what about all the things you done for Josie? Well, she's done all that for herself.
David, you're the first person who's been able to drag her out of her shell since Frank died.
Now, I'm not saying you should make a big commitment or anything, but that girl really thinks a lot about you.
Sarah, believe me, I don't want to go, but I Well, then, we can stop talking about it and get busy, can't we? Sarah, will you just Now, I know you'll make the right decision.
I know you will.
You've got a head on your shoulders, David.
Now, the keg has to be changed and the trash has to go out.
And Vic here's too lazy to do it all by his Ionesome.
Now get moving.
Sarah, I got me a bad back.
You know I got a bad back! I know.
I know.
(EXCLAIMING IN ANNOYANCE) Hey, you got police trouble? VIC: There's the boss.
Better get to work.
Thanks, Cliff.
Josie, if there's anything you need, let me know.
Don't worry.
I'm feeling a lot stronger lately.
CLIFF: Wouldn't have anything to do with your new bartender, would it? Look, you have a big union election to win, and I have a saloon to open, so Yeah, yeah.
Will I have your endorsement? Josie, it's important.
I got to open.
I'll see you in Frank's office in an hour, okay? I was worried about you last night.
I had on my best going-to-the-movies dress and everything.
Is something wrong? No, no, Josie, nothing's wrong.
As a matter of fact, I Well, I ran into an old friend of mine last night and he's from New Orleans.
He offered me a job.
You could have called.
Well, I couldn't.
You see, this friend and I, we had a bit of an incident down on the docks.
You're going to take the job in New Orleans? I don't know.
Did you ever have fish for breakfast? No, I can't say that It's wonderful when it's freshly caught.
Yeah, well, Josie The ocean at dawn is the best.
It's all gray and misty.
Yeah.
It's like a Chinese painting.
Josie, look How about tomorrow morning? Okay.
Well, what can we do for you, Your Highness? Where is your lovely boss, Sarah? Now, quit mauling me and I'll get her! Okay.
Hey, Victor! How's it going, amigo? Okay, Mr.
Kelly.
How's it going for you? You gonna get your old job back? Uh-huh.
This time next week, I'll be back in the saddle again, Vic.
What can I do for you, Mr.
Kelly? Josie, will you quit with that "Mr.
Kelly" stuff? You've known me for what, five years? And I've always been crazy about you and Frank, and you know that.
Okay, Okay.
So Frank beat me in the last election.
Big deal.
Am I supposed to stop liking him or his wife? Look, I'm not like that, Josie.
I didn't even get upset when Cliff McConnell left me to go to work for Frank.
And Frank, a good president for the union.
I'm not gonna give you the endorsement.
Oh, why not, Josie? What have you got against me, anyway? Why don't you two bozos get out of here? She don't wanna talk and we don't wanna listen! Hey, you shut up, you Oh, I'm sorry, it slipped.
Why, you Cool it, Marty.
Cool it.
Josie, all I want is your endorsement.
You may not like me personally, but you know I'm the best man for the union.
The union.
If it wasn't for the union Frank would still be alive.
Frank's death was an accident.
Why? Because you say it was? (SIGHING) Josie, I have no intention of losing the election to McConnell.
Marty.
Forget it.
CUSTOMER: Hey, Sarah, you gonna stand there all day and let my beer get flat? Vic! Vic! Cliff wants me to meet him down at the local.
It's It's Frank's old office.
Would you like to go with me? Might as well go.
You're useless around here today.
We're off.
Sarah, tomorrow I'll work twice as hard.
Vic! Vic! JOSIE: It's hard to believe my endorsement's so important to everybody.
Well, Kelly obviously thinks so.
Mmm-hmm.
I don't know.
Maybe the backing of an ex-president's wife could swing an election.
(LAUGHING) Maybe.
I know that Cliff agrees with you.
Cliff? What about Cliff? He seems like a pretty good candidate.
Oh, he is.
It's just that after Frank's accident, I just don't want to get mixed up in any of it.
Uh-huh.
Josie, there's There's talk around the dock that Frank's death was not an accident.
Well, the police did a full investigation.
And Cliff even hired a private investigator.
But nothing.
But the two of you must have felt that somebody had a motive.
Well, Frank mentioned that he was investigating dock thefts.
Really? Keep any records? Cliff and I looked through everything.
But it always came down to the same thing.
Frank's dead.
What does it matter? What's the matter? My sock slipped down the boot.
JOSIE: David! Cliff! Cliff? Cliff? Oh, my God! All right, easy now.
Yeah.
Be careful.
I think that you ought to have a doctor check that out right away.
I don't believe this.
What happened? I don't know.
Three men came through that door and started tearing this place apart.
Before I could get up to stop them, the lights went out.
We saw them.
Did you recognize anybody? No.
They wore masks.
I have a good idea who sent them, though.
This is Kelly's way of telling me to drop out of the election.
Mr.
Kelly gets around, doesn't he? CLIFF: What do you mean? He was at the pub earlier.
He still wants my endorsement.
Well, you have to hand it to him.
Especially when he knows you're going to endorse me.
You are, aren't you? Cliff I need it more than ever now.
Josie, we can't let him intimidate us.
We have to strike back.
Your endorsement would show him that this kind of power play didn't work.
I can't.
I just don't want to be involved in any of it! It's not possible, Josie.
You're Frank's wife.
Mr.
McConnell, I think you have made your point.
And I also think that we should get you to a doctor right away.
You are sure the fish are biting this early in the morning? I thought you said you were an angler.
Oh, no, no.
Wrangler.
Wrangler.
A cop-out, pure and simple.
More a case of mistaken semantics, I think.
It's been a long time since I've been fishing.
I forgot how chilly it can get.
You and Frank used to come here a lot? Seems like a million years ago.
And then, it's as if we were here together, yesterday.
It's the worst kind of déjà vu.
Yes, it's strange, and a little scary.
Yes, it is.
But it gets better.
And it's something you can handle on your own.
I've been leaning a little too hard? How about a couple of more minutes? (SOBBING) We got We got a bite.
(REEL SPINNING) Fish! Fish! Fish! We got a bite! Oh, good.
He's coming.
Oh, we caught it! (EXCLAIMING) You know what? You were right.
All right, all right, give us a kiss, love.
I guess you have to cook it first.
I think so.
Josie, I want to talk to you for a minute in private.
You can talk to us from there and you can talk to both of us.
Josie, I just wanted to let you know that I'm planning some changes when I'm elected.
A fund for widows of elected officers.
That's a rotten way to make a bribe.
Damn it, Josie.
This is important to every man in 696.
It's important to me.
Yes, I know.
I saw what your associates did to Cliff.
What the hell are you talking about? Did you really think you could scare him out of the race? Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
I've been very civil about all this.
I've steered clear of the old days.
Mr.
Kelly Goodbye, Mr.
Kelly.
Let's go.
MARTY: Come on, you turkeys, we only got half an hour.
Guy, check berth 219.
Mr.
Hammond! Mr.
Hammond! That's the last of it.
What about my money? Later.
We got to get this stuff out of here before anybody realizes it's gone.
You'll be paid when the Orient Princess finishes loading.
Listen, there's not one single customs stamp on this stuff.
I'm the one that is taking all the risk, and you're saying wait? You want out? Fine.
I got five wildcatters waiting to take your place.
Now, what's it gonna be? (TELEPHONE RINGING) Yeah.
Everything's fine.
Yeah, yeah.
The Orient's on schedule.
Don't worry.
How'd you make out with Josie? I'll handle it.
She'll come around.
MAN 1: "Beautiful explorer's tale of terror!" MAN 2: Oh, not that.
"Hulk spotted in Texas" I told you they were going to put it in the paper this week.
See, there's Sam's name right there.
Hey, that guy McGee spelled it wrong.
Here come more refills, David.
I already saw you coming.
Quiet night.
No complaints here.
SARAH: Hey, watch it, fella! MAN: Excuse me, Sarah.
Sorry, I'm sorry.
Hey, what the hell is this? That looks like a dead fish to me.
That bartender's really got a sense of humor.
He got to you.
(ALL LAUGHING) He got me.
Now I'II Now, hold it! What are you doing to her? Don't do that! Stop! SARAH: Don't! Stop it! Vic! Stop! Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! Marty! (ALL CLAMORING) (ALL SHOUTING) (HULK GROWLING) There it is! Just like Sam said! Come on! Let's go! Let's get out of here! Stop! Stop! Let's get out of here! No! (SCREAMING) Hit him! Use a chair! (MAN SCREAMING) (SCREAMING) Throw them at him! Crazy! No, get away! God! MAN: Look out! Get out of the way! They've gone.
Mister, can you understand me? It's all right now.
You better get going.
The police are coming.
You hear the sirens? Oh, I know you didn't start it, but you're sure to catch full blame if the cops catch you here.
You know, you kind of remind me of my second husband.
The strong, silent type.
Only talked when he had something to say.
Except he wasn't usually green.
Oh, you look just about as confused about all this as I am.
Come on.
Oh, fish guts, we're blocked! Hey, not bad! You're kind of handy to have around.
Our bartender should be back here somewhere.
David! Hey, David! (SIREN WAILING) Just keep quiet and they'll never know you're here.
(STUTTERING) Now, don't you worry.
I'll be back.
You just stay put.
And please try not to break anything.
You left a big enough mess in there.
What happened in here? (STUTTERING) I'm not sure.
It was sort of like this Japanese movie I saw once.
(MOANING) Everything was all right and there was this beer and this dead fish and then this This green man came in from the kitchen! Green man? Yeah.
Now, the longer you all stand here jawing, the further away he's going to get.
Okay.
Let's go.
SARAH: David, you ought to see what I got in the back room.
David? What happened to him? He's getting as bad as Vic.
(KNOCKING ON DOOR) Are you still in there? Hello? You won't hurt me, now, will you? What are you doing in there? Oh, this doggone lock! They've gone.
Where are you? It looks like a total loss.
Why, give us a few days and we'll have this place looking great.
CLIFF: It looks a lot worse than it is.
Sure, honey.
Once we get our so-called help back, we'll tackle this mess and have you back in business in no time.
Cliff.
You can have my endorsement.
I'll sign whatever you want, I'll talk to people for you, I'll shake a thousand hands.
Anything to keep Kelly from heading up the union.
That's great.
That's great! And that's it? What more do you want, mister? Do you think that I'm glad to give it to you, Cliff.
I could invent something like that? What can I say, Josie? You know how much this means to me.
Thank you.
Mrs.
Larkin, I'd like a word with you.
About that bartender you mentioned Ain't nobody seen him since last night.
Well Why don't you go in and help Sarah, okay? Here's a phone number where I can be reached.
Would you call me there when he comes back? It could be worth your while.
There'll be a lot of publicity.
I don't think much of your newspaper, Mr.
McGee.
You ain't gonna believe this.
Not a chip on it.
Well, if there's one unbroken glass there has got to be others.
Sarah, I'm going to pilfer my savings, contact the insurance company.
We are going to open this place by the end of the week.
Are you kidding, honey? Sure, we're gonna reopen Sarah, we are going to do it.
I got a feeling somebody I know and love's standing on her own two feet.
That's right.
I'm not gonna be leaning on anyone from now on.
Well, that's the best news I've heard all day.
David, I'm glad you're all right.
Well, I'm fine, I think.
You had us all worried sick.
What happened to you last night? Well, once I got thrown out the bar doors, I was knocked out.
I can't remember.
You didn't see it? You didn't see the Jolly Green Giant? No, I didn't.
Was anyone hurt? SARAH: No, everybody came out okay.
A few bumps and bruises.
I got hurt.
My back.
Oh, yeah, I know all about your back.
I swear I know Well, at least we won't be seeing Marty Hammond and his friends for a while.
Look, Josie, I've saved up a little money.
I'd like you to have it to pay for some of this.
Oh, the insurance company will cover it.
Besides, you don't have to pay.
You were one of the victims, remember? Yes, well, I didn't do very much to stop it, did I? From what Sarah says, there wasn't much you could do.
I'm just glad you're here.
We can certainly use the help.
What's the matter? The job I told you about.
New Orleans? Yes.
Well, at least you waited until I was tough enough to take it.
You're sure? This is just what I needed.
Just enough to get me really angry.
I'm going to endorse Cliff.
Then he can't miss.
You sure you have to go? Yes.
It isn't every day I meet such a good fisherman who can stand my kind of cooking.
Look, you take that job in New Orleans, and if you don't write me I'm gonna come looking for you.
Then I won't write.
You got some pay coming.
No, no.
Believe me, please.
I have enough.
Keep it.
Okay.
Goodbye, Josie.
I'm not going to take goodbye from you, Mr.
Barton.
"I'll be seeing you" is much better.
Then I'll be seeing you.
(CHUCKLING) Goodbye, Sarah.
Vic, you take care of your back.
Drifters.
No matter how good they seem, they always end up leaving you in the lurch.
David isn't like that.
Come on, let's get to work.
Come on, we got to get all this stuff loaded.
Let's move it.
Come on, you guys, move it! Get the lead out.
How's it going? Okay.
Marty, can I see you for a minute? Listen, last night did the trick.
I got her endorsement.
MARTY: Well, It's about time.
Now all you gotta do is win the election.
Yeah.
I'll be glad when it's over.
There's been too much violence.
What are you griping about? There's only been a few little accidents.
I've had my fill of your little accidents.
Was Frank a little accident? Come off it, McConnell.
Would you rather have him around to blow the whistle on us? Well, I still think you went too far.
You were right there with me, McConnell.
You and me.
I got a ship to unload now.
(BAROQUE MUSIC PLAYING ON STEREO) (MUSIC ABRUPTLY STOPS) FRANK: The following information constitutes the results of two years' intensive investigation.
And should be sufficient evidence to implicate Frank.
A group of individuals responsible for a large-scale black-market operation on the docks.

Cargo included stereos and TVsets.
Estimated value of shipment $75,000.

Union member 7543 Oh, Cliff! Good Lord.
This is what we've been looking for all this time! Yes.
Yes.
Yes, it is.
Sarah, is Josie here? Thought you left.
What's wrong? Forget your severance pay? Frank's death was no accident.
Marty Hammond killed him and Cliff was in on it.
What? Yeah.
Now, do you know where Josie is? Well, she's down at Frank's office.
She wanted to be alone.
Do you have the number? Let's Let's take it down to the police station.
Okay.
Come on.
(TELEPHONE RINGING) Hello.
DAVID: Cliff? Yes.
Who is this? This is David Barton.
Is Josie there? Please, Cliff, come on.
No, she's not here.
Sorry.
Who was it? Cliff said she wasn't there and I heard her in the background.
I've got to get over there right away.
Can I borrow your car? I need the keys.
My car's just a clunker.
That's all right.
Be careful.
Oh! Call the police and tell them to get down to the local union right away.
The secretary's boyfriend.
I guess she's in trouble now.
What else could I do? Lie? Josie.
Hey, watch it! (CAR HORNS HONKING) What is it? What's wrong? Not a thing.
Well, this This makes everything all right.
I just want to get my records on these shipping dates and then we'll be in business.
Why did we stop? It's Marty Hammond.
We better get out of here.
Cliff! Oh, my God! Why? (YELLING) Why? Nothing was supposed to happen to Frank.
We were trying to scare him away.
It just got out of hand.
He gave you everything! No, he didn't give me everything.
I was over my head in gambling debts and That stock market.
I went to him.
I ask him for help.
He turned me down.
He wanted my resignation.
Josie.
Let go of me! Help! Help! Help! Had to bring her.
She knows everything.
What if someone finds her? Don't worry.
This stuff won't be loaded till tomorrow.
No one will come in here.
She'll be long gone by then.
(GRUNTING) David, it was Cliff.
Yeah, I know.
Be ready to leave in an hour.
Real good.
I got a little package I want you to take along.
What kind of package? A friend of ours.
She's into long-distance swimming.
Wait a second.
Look, we've got no choice.
Not if we want to keep this operation going.
Understand? We've got to get out of here.
Turned off.
Come on.
They're coming.
Hurry! That's the bartender.
They're getting away.
They've got nowhere to go.
To the right! You're not going to get out of here.
Make it easy on yourself.
(GUN FIRING) You idiot! You'll have every dockworker in here! Josie! Josie! Hold it right there, Mr.
Bartender.
Well, if it isn't the man who was going to change things on the docks.
Shouldn't you be carrying the gun, Cliff? Shut up.
Just shut up! MARTY: Try it.
Wait a minute.
I didn't figure on this.
Get them in there.
Move them.
Both of them.
Come on, let's get her up here.
Easy.
I'll take her.
Hold it.
Open the door.
Okay, let's get in, come on.
Come on! Hold it! This has gone too far.
Get outside and move the dock crane up close.
Move it! Get them down to the bottom of the hold.
Quick! We'll take care of it.
Help! Set her down on number three hold.
No! Help! CLIFF: What is it? MARTY: It's that thing from the bar again.
MAN: What's he doing up there? MARTY: That's Josie he's got up there.
MAN 1: What's he doing with her? Where did he come from? MAN 1: Stay back! Stay away! What the heck is that thing? MAN 2: I don't believe it.
Get him.
He's trying to hurt Josie.
Get him.
Come on! He ain't gonna hurt Josie.
MAN 1: Yo, let go of him.
(SCREAMING) MAN: Come on! (BOTH SCREAMING) (TIRES SCREECHING) Come on, let's go! It won't move.
What do you mean it won't move? He's holding it.
What? He's holding it? He's holding it.
MAN: Marty! Marty! Are you all right? Somebody help get this door open.
(SIRENS WAILING) MAN 1: Get out of his way! MAN 2: Don't worry.
MAN 3: Man, that sucker's big! MAN 4: What is that thing? What happened? It's okay, lady.
You're safe.
OFFICER: It's all over now.
(JOSIE MOANING) She's all right.
Mrs.
Larkin, could I get a statement from you? MAN 1: Where did he go? The place is a mess and she wants to reopen on Friday.
I'll call you back later.
You better be careful with that back, Vic.
Yes, ma'am.
So what happened? (EXCLAIMING) Tony Kelly! I still can't believe about Cliff, though.
Sarah, I think I need a drink.
I got something better for you.
Outside.
He's just leaving.
JOSIE: David! David! You're really leaving this time? Josie, I have to.
I've stayed too long already.
What kind of trouble are you in? Is there anything I can help you with? No.
If there was, I'd ask.
Believe me.
Bribery won't work this time, will it? No one for Josie to lean on.
Except Josie.
I'll miss you.
You be good to yourself.
