The Incredible Hulk (1978) s02e03 Episode Script

The Antowuk Horror

You're not gonna let that creature scare you off? Harlan, we got a problem.
(GRUNTING) You're not serious, are you, about trying to hunt that creature down? No, I'm not gonna try.
I'm doing it.
Where's Dad? BRAD: That thing, it got him.
(ALL SCREAMING) I'll get that man-eater that took your father and I'll kill him! It's a hoax.
The whole thing is a hoax.
Dad, Dad! NARRATOR: Dr.
David Banner, physician, scientist.
Searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have.
Then, an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry.
And now, when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.
(ROARS) The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter.
Mr.
McGee, don't make me angry.
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
The creature is wanted for a murder he didn't commit.
David Banner is believed to be dead.
And he must let the world think that he is dead until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him.
(ROARS) (TRUCK DOOR OPENING) You're an amateur, Jack, my boy.
(SNICKERING) That creature of yours will never come back again.
Animals never return to where they've been shot at, I guarantee you.
Why, I shot a big rogue elephant once Hendricks, I told you before, I can't use you.
Now it's been three weeks.
Now, that Hulk of yours has gone up into the mountains somewhere to hole up.
Now, I know animals and I guarantee it.
Well, your guarantees don't make it so, Buck.
Not anymore.
The answer is still no.
But listen, Jack, together we could bag this thing.
Look, Buck, my expense account is stretched pretty far as it is, but I don't want a handout.
I want a job.
I'm a hunter, not a charity case.
"Buck Hendricks.
Big Game Hunter, "Extraordinaire.
" Remember? I gave you plenty of good copy in my time.
Listen, Jack, if we shoot this Hulk creature of yours, it'll be just like it used to be.
You'll have a great story, and I'll be right back on the lecture circuit! Do you hear yourself? Five years ago, you wouldn't have even considered shooting something that's worth more alive than it is dead.
Now, Buck, forget it.
Just go home.
That's my home! Well, I'm sorry about that.
I really am sorry, but I can't help you.
All right, McGee, all right.
I'll beat you to the punch.
I'll get to your monster first and I'll kill it! It will show itself again.
The big ones always do.
And Buck Hendricks will be there.
Guarantee it.
That's a good way to get lockjaw, you know, wrapping a cut in that dirty thing.
Well, it's only a temporary bandage, Samantha.
Temporary, huh? Yeah.
By the time you got around to putting a real dressing on, there'd be about a zillion infectious bugs running around inside of you.
Don't you know anything about first aid? I know a little bit, yeah.
Are you going to just stand there and bleed to death, David? No.
Well, you're certainly home early from school.
Mr.
Wilkins let us go for the afternoon.
Hardly anyone left for him to teach in this town.
This might hurt.
Well, I'm ready whenever you are, Dr.
Bates.
(MIMICS GROANING) Now, that's better.
Better? Tommy Porter and his folks left today.
That's five families this month.
(BRAD LAUGHING) Dad's fishing party didn't show, huh? Uh-huh.
What's that? Microscope.
Oh, really.
May I? Hey, now that is some piece of equipment.
Mr.
Wilkins let me borrow it for my project.
I'm going to classify the bacteria in Sun Lake and Big deal, huh? Not much sense in being good at something with nobody around.
Well, I'm glad you're back early because you can help me straighten out the shop.
Who's going to notice? All our customers? It's a waste of time.
Really? Ready? I win and we go fishing, okay? All right, you got a deal.
Start counting.
One, two, three.
(EXCLAIMS) Scissors cut paper.
(SIGHING) It's still a waste of time.
BRAD: And everyone of those girls believing your story about an avalanche closing the main ski lift.
Now that's funny.
You know, I got a good mind to call that big shot, so-called fisherman again.
No use wasting your breath on those gray flannel types.
Besides, it's time we faced the facts.
Our little town of Antowuk is kaput.
Finished.
I say that this town's got what it takes to boom again, that's what I say.
Now you just tell me what it is that Aspen or Squaw Valley, one of those places have that we don't have right here.
Huh? What? People, for one thing.
Oh, that's cute, Brad.
People, that's real cute.
Antowuk just isn't the in place to go anymore.
We got great fishing up at the lakes, we got a terrific ski resort.
Yeah.
My ski resort is operating in the deepest shade of red.
Now you've done your best, Harlan, we all have.
The newspaper ads, the travel agents in Salt Lake, down in L.
A.
, Denver.
But nothing works! People have simply forgotten about Antowuk.
No.
Now, I'm closing my place and getting out.
And if you weren't such a dreamer, you'd do the same thing.
Brad, it's my place.
Do you understand? I can't quit.
I can't quit now.
Or ever.
Well, we're almost finished and then I'm going to take you fishing.
Really? Mmm-hmm.
(CASH REGISTER DINGS) Hi, Dad.
How come you're not in school? Mr.
Wilkins let us go early.
Where's the rest of the beer? Over there.
What's going on here? We're cleaning up a bit.
Everything's divided into sections.
Hardware's on this side, the sporting goods are over here Barton, just hold it! Now you see, Sam? He comes here, he's looking for work.
He's flat broke, we're about ready for the bankruptcy court.
I still give him a job.
He says he'll work for his room and his board.
But him, I say he's educated.
Knows it all.
Wants to change things.
Leave him alone, Dad.
David's just trying to help.
Sam, you hear yourself, huh? I mean, anybody would think that he was your father and I was the hired hand.
You know, if your mother was still alive to see No, I'm sorry.
Sorry.
Come on, Miss Bates.
Your mom would be real proud of you.
You're a real woman.
You're all grown up.
You take care of me just fine.
Sam I said I was sorry.
I have to get your lunch ready.
What're you doing now, huh? I was just finishing up.
Why don't you do that? Finish up, huh? You could rearrange everything.
Turn the whole place upside down, huh? Give us a new look.
And while you're at it, I I got just the place for you to start.
Barton, do you still work here or not? Barton? That's what I figured you'd decide.
HARLAN: I want you to pull everything out of this room, starting with the big boxes over there.
Then I want you to scrub the room.
And then I want you to inventory all this gear.
(SIGHING) You're the boss.
That's right.
I'm the boss.
What's the matter? You worried? I mean, a smart guy like you, huh? You're always spouting off about education to Sam.
Now's your chance to show her how an educated man can take a tough job like this, you see, and can make it simple.
Look, I'm not trying to interfere with you and Samantha Sam is none of your business.
You just You just get cracking.
Go on.
You know, Barton, I think I got you figured.
I mean, someone like you doesn't come hiking all the way up here for their health, now do they? Or was it the law? Jealous husband? Something worse? Too tough for you, David? You want to quit? Guys like you, you make a habit of running away.
I know your kind.
Do you? Yeah.
Big shots, huh? Can't stand having someone tell them what to do.
They have little tantrums, Davy.
Why don't you let loose on me and just get it out of your system? You're here just in time to see college boy here take me on, hand to hand.
(BRAD LAUGHING) That I want to see.
Come on, you're gonna take a punch at me, or not? You won't lose your job, not if you win.
You hear me? Hey! Whoa, whoa.
Let's get something to eat.
Come on, Harlan.
I'll be back to make sure you do it right, huh? Don't forget the boxes.
BRAD: (LAUGHING) Harlan, you're too much.
(SCREAMS) (GROWLING) What was that? You just stay right here.
David's in there, Dad.
David's in there! Harlan, we got a problem.
Look at the size of that thing! (GROWLING) Just hold your ground.
I mean, there's two of us.
That ain't gonna be enough.
Look out, here he comes.
Get out of here! (SCREAMS) (SAMANTHA SCREAMS) What about David? Anyone see David? MAN 1: Must have been big! MAN 2: Look at the damage.
WOMAN: Tore the whole place up! Bad! David! Hey, David, I thought for sure that whatever-it-was got you.
You got out just in time.
Are you all right? DAVID: What's going on? SAMANTHA: They've got a meeting going on in there.
You know how adults are.
You're not gonna let that creature scare you off? You're not gonna leave, are you? Was there much damage? Yes, a lot.
CLAIRE: I don't know, Harlan.
As newspaper editor, I'd love to spread this story all over the place.
But being mayor, too, it puts me in a bad spot.
I don't wanna start a panic.
Claire I mean, Your Honor, I don't want to sound disrespectful, but you're nuts.
You see, there's not enough people left in this town to panic! Now, this creature is exactly what Antowuk needs.
It's a tourist draw that won't stop! It's better than a Bigfoot! I mean, even while it was tearing this place apart I was thinking this thing is the answer to our prayers, the answer! I don't particularly take to the idea of my district being overrun by a lot of weirdos out looking for some kind of monster.
Yeah, they're weirdos, agreed.
But weirdos with money in their pockets, not to mention, the nationwide news coverage we're gonna get.
Right, huh? Now, think about this, the headline.
"A Resort Community Battles Mountain Monster.
" And the story that follows "Mayor Claire Murphy and Sheriff Chuck Colton's "quick reactions in organizing Antowuk's defenses "saves serious loss of life and property, et cetera, so on.
" And we can call the thing "The Antowuk Horror!" Now that will put this town right back on the map.
I guarantee it.
Huh? CLAIRE: Well, listen, we surely don't have a thing to lose.
Okay, Harlan, come on, let's give it a try.
Oh, that's my girl! Look, we'll play this thing high and wide.
Now when Brad and me track this thing down Track? Now hold on, Harlan, just a minute.
I'm the sheriff here.
Any tracking to be done, I should be the one to lead the parade.
Well, what you should be is right here in town, protecting life and property, and handling all those reporters that are gonna be coming in to take pictures of things.
Well You know, we'll bag this monster and then we'll stuff him.
And then the people And then the people will stay to ski, hunt and fish.
COLTON: And buy.
Sure they'll come to buy everything and anything Antowuk can offer.
I'll get down to my office and I'll contact the wire services.
Young fella, I'll want to take a statement from you a little later.
You keep yourself handy.
HARLAN: Hey, Barton, you must be faster on your feet than I thought.
I'm sorry about what happened to your place.
It's not as bad as it looks.
It shouldn't take you long to square it away.
I'll help you, David.
Sam, I think I need you right now.
Would you go fix me some sandwiches? Look, you're not serious, are you, about trying to hunt that creature down? No, I'm not gonna try.
I'm doing it.
What about Samantha? Sam will be just fine.
She's been alone before while I was out in those hills.
She'll be just fine.
Besides, if you're so worried about her, why don't you Why don't you stay here at the store and look after her? Sam won't mind that.
She seems to like you, well enough.
Why don't you go on back to work? Here, let me help you.
I don't really want you to hurt yourself.
You know, I I tried it in the city.
Down where you came from, it's no luck.
I don't fit in.
Maybe you didn't give it enough time.
No.
No, I gave.
It's me.
I don't belong anywhere but right here.
And if we can put Antowuk back on its feet, it'll be a good place for Sam to grow up.
A real place.
Hey, you ready to go, Harlan? Yeah, Brad, I'll be right there.
Glad to see you're still kicking.
Thanks.
You You take care of yourself, huh? Bye, Dad.
Thank you.
BRAD: Help, help! Somebody, help! Sheriff, get the sheriff! Brad, what is it? What happened? What's the matter, Brad? Where's Dad? Brad, where is Harlan? Out there.
That thing, it got him.
CLAIRE: It got who? Harlan? It got Harlan? We tracked it this far before dark.
Look at the size of this print! It took us by surprise.
We tried to fight, but it was too big.
It grabbed Harlan.
Went off through here.
Look, I understand why you're doing this, but What're you talking about? But there's more than just yourselves to think about.
Yeah, this is no place for her.
It's her father that's missing, if he's missing.
Are you saying I lied about all this? That we I'm just saying it's a hoax.
The whole thing is a hoax.
Where do you get off accusing us of such a thing? Samantha's father is out there somewhere.
He may be alive or not.
I don't know.
But I do know saying he's a cheat and a liar, and me, too, is pretty low.
And laying that kind of stuff on Samantha is gonna be even lower.
It would be if I was wrong.
Now how come you're so sure of yourself, Barton? Besides us, a dozen other people in town saw that thing.
Or do you have some kind of inside line on this creature? A lot of tracks back there, leading up toward the rocks.
Samantha, we found this.
You know, Samantha, your daddy's mighty good in the woods.
He really knows what he's doing.
So don't you start giving up hope.
The sheriff's right, Sam.
We'll find him.
Oh, Harlan's probably got that big thing thrown and hogtied by now.
He'll be a real hero.
Not if he's hurt, he won't be.
MAN ON RADIO: And now before we close out today's news, an item from Antowuk, Utah.
It seems the good people of Antowuk have a monster on their hands.
So far no one's been hurt but a Mr.
Harlan Bates has been reported missing, supposedly captured by the creature.
COLTON: Now this This creature, this monster or whatever it is, it came right through here.
I didn't see it myself, but there's one thing sure.
It's big.
It's real big.
We hear you've got casts of the creature's footprint, Sheriff.
Sheriff Colton? The casts? The casts.
Oh, the cast.
I'm sorry.
My God! MAN: Oh, wow! Hey, there's Mayor Murphy.
Hey, Mayor, Mayor.
Everything humanly possible is being done to find Mr.
Bates.
Sheriff Colton is organizing a search party and the Civil Air Patrol is also assisting.
(REPORTERS CLAMORING) There'll be a press conference at 8:00, gentlemen, 8:00.
Well, front window's boarded up.
Samantha, about your father, I don't think that (DOOR CLOSING) More souvenir hunters.
Just some gear for the search party.
Hey, wait a minute.
BRAD: No time, Barton.
I guess Dad was right.
They just keep coming in.
Listen, Samantha, If you know something I don't know Dinner is now being served, Mr.
Barton.
Nothing fancy.
Hamburgers, macaroni, and green beans.
(DOG BARKING) There you are, you naughty little dog.
(GROWLING) (SCREAMING) (GROWLING) MAN 1: It's headed this way! Run! Everybody run! MAN 2: What is it? Over there, behind the wagon.
He's over there.
Watch out! MAN 3: Somebody get the sheriff.
(ALL SCREAMING) Samantha, stay here! GIRL: Mommy! Where's my mommy? MAN 4: Hey, watch it, watch it.
It's over there.
There it is.
He's heading for Main Street.
Hold your fire! MAN 5: Keep moving! Keep moving! Samantha, I told you Samantha, come with me.
MAN 6: Come on, move! Run! You'll get trampled.
WOMAN: Hold on to my hand! (GUN CLICKS) Are you all right? Did he hurt you? You were closer to it than anybody.
How big was it? (GROWLING) Harlan, don't! (LAUGHING) Man, you look weird.
You should have seen you.
The charcoal is what does it.
Listen, how are things in town? How's it going? Confused.
What? But none of the tourists are leaving.
More coming in and staying.
All right! They seem to really like it here.
I think Antowuk's been rediscovered.
And those newspaper guys Yeah? They're very happy, Harlan.
Very happy.
Yeah, the morning editions are gonna be coming out pretty soon.
L.
A.
, San Francisco, all over the country.
And Antowuk is gonna be on every front page! Every one! Sam, what about Sam? You did tell her, didn't you? Yeah.
I told her.
That's great, great.
And you brought the gear? Yeah.
But do you really think we need all this stuff? I mean, last night was pretty effective.
No, no.
Last night was kid's stuff.
You ain't seen nothing yet.
Come on.
Come on! Come on.
All right, you wouldn't talk to me last night, but you've got to talk to me now.
Are you going to let me in on it, Samantha? Rabbit's blood.
Different structure.
Mr.
Wilkins would be proud of me.
Samantha.
It's just for publicity, what he's doing, David.
It's for the town.
No.
No.
No, not anymore.
You saw what happened last night.
Someone could've been hurt.
Dad won't hurt anybody.
He could be hurt.
There are police in town now.
There are men with guns.
If you know where he is, you have to tell me, Samantha.
Dad can take care of himself.
You don't know him like me.
I can't let him down.
Ever since Mom died he's been I can't spoil it for him.
Now, look, honey, don't you cry.
I'm going to get that horror thing for you.
Yes, sir, I'll get that man-eater that took your father and I'll kill him! I guarantee it! I think that's enough, all right? Oh, these amateurs they just wanna capture it, but I'm going to kill that thing.
You're not going to kill anything.
Now, come on, Samantha.
Now don't you worry, honey, I'm going to track it down.
And I'll kill it! SAMANTHA: When Mom was alive, when we were all together, Dad used to take us to a mountain that was nearly always covered with clouds at the top.
He called it Sky Mountain.
He might be there.
How do I find him? I'll show you.
No, Samantha.
Why? What's wrong? You're going to have to tell me.
It's gonna be tough enough talking to your father without having you along.
Oh, no, you don't! Not if I can help it.
Samantha, will you please try to understand? If you want to help him, you have to do as I say.
Please.
You follow along the canyon to just beyond that long ridge out there.
Uh-huh.
You'll see it then.
It's only five or six miles from here.
Thank you.
There, that ought to do it.
Just twist this knob and Just like I turned over old Colton's jeep.
But I'm gonna be leading that whole search party right up that trail, and with the path booby-trapped Brad, nobody is going to get hurt.
Now look, you just bring them right along that safe trail I marked over there.
By then I'll let them see me and the show can begin.
Brad, nothing is gained without a little risk, just a little one? All right, get going.
And I'll see you later.
(RUSTLING) Somebody's coming! Spotted it.
Just up ahead! A couple of miles from here.
All right, let's move.
Harlan! Harlan Bates! (GROWLING) Knock it off, Harlan! It's me, David! Harlan, I'm coming up there! Damn it, Harlan! You know, you just wrecked a lot of hard work.
I suppose it doesn't matter that I was almost killed in the process? It would've served you right, Barton! Now why don't you just get out of here before you foul up everything? No, I'm not going anywhere until you go with me.
Harlan, that so-called posse back there is out for blood.
And there's a professional hunter who would just love to kill you.
I can take care of myself! Well, what about Samantha? She doesn't want a dead father, Harlan.
I think you said enough.
As a matter of fact, you've said too much.
Now get out of here! Hey! Up here! Everybody, up here! (GRUNTING) You're fired, Barton.
Yeah, he asked for that anyway.
(GROWLING) HENDRICKS: Son of a gun.
Two of them! (GROWLING) Dad, Dad! (SCREAMING) SAMANTHA: Dad, help me, hurry! Dad, hurry, help! Dad? Dad, hurry up.
Just hold on.
Honey, I'll get you out, just hold on.
Dad, help! Dad help! Dad! Come on, try and grab hold, Sam.
Come on, come on.
Try, huh? A little more.
(GRUNTS) SAMANTHA: Dad, I can't hold on! Dad! HARLAN: Try and grab hold, Sam.
Come on.
Come on, honey, try.
A little more.
I got you, Sam! Now the other hand, come on.
You're gonna be okay, just hang on.
Okay, baby, I'm gonna get you.
Come on.
(GROWLS) Come on, honey, try.
You're gonna be just fine.
You're gonna be okay, hang on.
There, on the cliff! That's it! Move it! (GROWLING) Now go on! Get it over with! There it is! McGEE: Don't shoot, you'll hit the old man.
MAN 1: He is green! MAN 2: We need a cannon to get it! It's the biggest thing I've ever seen! No one's gonna believe this.
It's a hoax.
The whole thing's a hoax.
What hoax? Oh, well, yeah, this guy maybe, but what about that thing we saw down there? You call that a hoax? That was no hoax.
And that old guy down there, he stood right up to it.
I'm getting an interview.
McGEE: Wait a minute! That man's an employee of The National Register! Harlan Well, we almost got away with it.
What're you talking about? This whole town's got itself a transfusion.
Harlan, we're back in business.
David.
What about David? He was just up here trying to make me understand what I was doing.
I think we'd better find him.
I got some apologizing to do.
To both of you.
Come on.
SAMANTHA: David! David, wait! Boy, some people just take off without a goodbye or anything.
I left you a note right in your microscope box.
Sure, a note.
"I'm sorry I can't be here to say goodbye in person.
" Some friend you turned out to be.
I don't know what I ever saw in you to begin with.
You're right, Samantha, I know that.
But, believe me, I have to move on.
I'm just being selfish.
What are the stakes this time? I win, and you stay.
Okay? Okay.
Paper covers rock.
You win.
Two out of three? Come on.
Can't blame me for trying.
Hey, folks, this the way to Antowuk, where the monster's hanging out? Straight ahead.
That's where the monster is, Antowuk.
Well, you be good to yourself.
Be safe.
