The Irregulars (2021) s01e04 Episode Script

Chapter Four: Both the Needle and the Knife

[wind blowing]
[rumbling]
[bells chiming]
[man] It's time, gentlemen.
[indistinct chatter]
[clanking]
[Cambridge grunts]
[groans]
[dogs barking]
Every animal has a unique skin map,
a way in which the dermis attaches
to the muscle and bone beneath.
You can't flay a pig
the same way you'd flay a man.
[splashes]
But the real skill is not in
how you remove the skin,
but in how you piece it back together.
That's where it becomes…
[grunting]
[panting]
an art form.
[policeman] Oi! You! What are you doing?
Oh, God.
[Dave groans]
[policeman] Don't make this difficult.
[woman groaning]
[policeman] What?
Please just leave me alone.
I don't have no money.
I don't have nothing.
[opening theme music playing]
[bells toll]
[birds chirping]
[clanking]
Every time I come here, there's rubbish.
Who litters in a friggin' graveyard?
Are you sure this is her?
I know it sounds stupid to say,
but I just want to spend an hour with her.
Just have a cup of tea
and a little chat. Just say hello.
It's not stupid at all.
I have a theory, Jessica.
Based on the Sherlock grimoire.
I think Alice was gifted like you.
An Ipsissimus, even.
I think perhaps Sherlock and Watson
used her for her powers,
just as Watson is using you for yours.
Uh, listen to this.
"A had to be restrained
once again this evening."
"Delirium and horror have taken her."
"Refusing to take part
in tomorrow's experiments."
"Bloodletting ceremony
must take place regardless."
No wonder she went mad
if she went through all that.
What if Sherlock and Watson
were responsible for her death?
[whimpers] What if they killed her?
Those bastards.
-We have to go and speak to Dr. Watson.
-No.
Jess, the bastard we need to speak to
is Sherlock Holmes.
He's the key to all of this.
The Rip, Mum, everything.
Watson wants to speak to us
about a job later. That's our chance.
[hoofs beating]
[indistinct chatter]
You're not on your own, Beatrice.
You must remember that.
[horse neighing]
You're very different
to anyone I've ever met.
What do you mean?
You have… something about you.
-Like a smell?
-[chuckles] No. Like a quality.
I don't know what it is…
but I really like it.
Well, when you think of it, let me know.
I'll be sure to.
And I'm not saying
you don't smell, by the way.
I'm just saying that that's not the thing.
You know, I was thinking of kissing you,
but now I'm not gonna.
Well, uh…
I suppose I have to kiss you, then.
I meant it when I said
you're not on your own.
[bell tolling]
[exhales]
I better be going.
I have a thing I need to attend.
You're just gonna disappear off again?
-Right now?
-Beatrice, I--
Come back when it suits you?
-It's not like that.
-It is like that, literally.
I really thought that you weren't…
-Just forget it.
-I'll be back tonight.
Here on this bridge, 10:00 p.m.
It doesn't matter, honestly.
Have a nice day.
I'm not a dabbler, Bea.
I promise I'll be back.
[sighs]
[exhales sharply]
[whimpering]
[gasps]
[breathing heavily]
[rumbling]
[birds chirping]
[chuckles] It works. I got out.
[both chuckle]
-Thank you.
-The pleasure's all mine.
I met a group of people
who told me I was an Ipsissimus.
Well, some people call us that.
So, you're one, too.
That's how our minds can meet like this.
Being an Ipsissimus can be a lonely path.
A lot of people want
to take advantage of you.
People you consider your friends,
they can treat you differently, too.
Can make you feel like
something of a freak.
Definitely.
Which is why I hate myself
for what I'm about to ask of you.
From what you told me,
I feel these monsters,
they see something of the Rip
when they get their power.
Now, if you can dive deeper
-into their mind…
-No. Please.
-…you might see that location.
-[intense ringing]
The Tooth Fairy went into my head,
into my past, and… No.
I'm so sorry,
but I have to ask you to do more.
[continues indistinctly]
[breathing heavily]
[horse neighing]
Don't mention Mum. Don't mention Mycroft.
Don't mention anything
you don't have to. Got it?
The murder took place
in an alleyway next to a public house
called the Saggar's Arms in Harrow.
We have numerous witnesses
who say the assailant was a man
named David Oliver.
He removed the face of the victim,
one Paul Cambridge.
Why don't the police
just arrest David Oliver?
David Oliver was found dead ten days ago.
He also had his face flayed
from his skull.
So, the murderer was found murdered
ten days before the murder?
Correct. It's disturbing
and makes no sense.
-Naturally they've asked for our help.
-Naturally.
Unlike the other cases, this one
hasn't been fully handed over to us.
It's being led by an inspector
from Scotland Yard named Lestrade.
He was in charge
of the investigation when it began,
and it seems he's reluctant
to be removed from it.
So, why are we involved at all?
Lestrade has requested Jessica join him
in case he needs use of her abilities.
That is all. Report back to me
when you have anything.
I'm sorry, are you waiting
for me to say "please"?
Well, we just felt like
now would be a good time
for us to meet your business partner.
Seeing as we're doing
so much work for you both.
My business partner is unavailable.
Unavailable how?
He's working in his room
and doesn't wish to be disturbed.
Sherlock Holmes.
-That's his name, isn't it?
-He's unavailable.
[Dr. Watson] Stop!
[panting]
[Dr. Watson] Stop!
Do not…
Why did you lie about him being here?
Get out.
Because you knew I'd look for him
if he were anywhere else.
Get out of his room!
-You have no idea where he is.
-You stay away from him!
I'm gonna find him.
I'm gonna find out everything.
Everything you've been hiding from us.
[panting] This is where you
and your friends sit.
Here.
You go anywhere near Sherlock,
I will crush every single one of you.
[panting]
[indistinct chatter]
Inspector Lestrade?
John Watson sent us.
You.
You're the girl with the, uh…
abilities?
You two can go.
Whoa, whoa. We go where she goes, mate.
Keep them out of my way.
When did you grow a pair?
I don't like him.
What do you think?
[Billy] Oh, I don't like anyone.
I don't even like you guys, really.
What is it you want me to do?
Do you have any leads, or, uh…
Let's get something straight.
You're here for one reason.
Because someone told me you were warped
in a way that might be useful to me.
I don't like people like you.
People who have been touched
by dark magic.
Once you have served your purpose,
I will send you back to whatever
unholy den it is you came from.
What do we do now?
We could take a look around
at the crime scene?
-Is that a thing?
-[landlord] What the hell is this?
You think people want to come
to my pub with you lot outside?
[policeman] Calm down, sir.
[landlord] I want you lot gone!
Well, go on, shift your ass.
Some of us have got a business to run.
[indistinct chatter]
[growling]
[laughs]
[all laughing]
[chuckles]
[Clara] Hey!
[chuckles nervously] All right.
[midwife] What's troubling you, my dear?
I've got sickness and headaches
and pain lower down.
I think I'm with child.
[screams]
[gasping]
Jess? Are you okay?
That's the guy. That's the killer.
But he's not…
He's a girl. She's the murderer.
[indistinct chatter]
This is it. This is the pub.
The three men
took her upstairs over there.
[door slams]
The man I bumped into outside
was one of them.
Only… it wasn't him. It was her.
I think she's using their faces
to become them.
To get revenge on them.
-I think that's her power.
-A demon walks amongst us.
She must be found and dealt with.
I told you lot to do one.
Are you trying to put me out of business?
The two men who were killed in this area,
we think they drank here.
Dave Oliver and Paul Cambridge.
Yeah. They're regulars.
Good friends of mine. Good men.
Do you remember them taking a girl
upstairs here with a third man?
That doesn't happen here.
You're lying.
They paid you to use one of your rooms.
I did no such thing. I'm a family man.
This is my home.
My wife and kids live upstairs.
This is a respectable establishment.
If she snuck upstairs with someone,
she's probably a whore.
She isn't a prostitute.
I think she's a seamstress or a weaver.
She had needle marks in her hands.
There's a girl down the way
who comes in here like that.
Her dad owns the weird place
on the corner. The taxidermy shop.
[Mrs. Hudson] You know, George,
if you're ever struggling like this again,
we can always find
an alternative means of payment.
[George] Uh…
[Mrs. Hudson] Off you go.
Mrs. Hudson?
Well, shit in your hat and punch it.
And they say miracles never happen.
Come to cough up your back rent at last?
I was about to send
the Cartwrights round to see you.
Since I'm here,
I wondered if you might help me.
I'm looking for a man
who lives at one of your properties.
221B Baker Street. Sherlock Holmes.
I own three dozen properties
in this neighborhood.
What makes you think I'd know this guy?
[scoffs]
Because you make it your business
to know everything about everyone.
All you need know about Sherlock Holmes
is he's a drug addict and a bum.
Back when he was clean,
do you remember him hanging around
with this woman?
[Mrs. Hudson] Christ,
I remember her, all right.
Amount of complaints
I got from the tenants
about screaming, crying, carrying on.
God knows what they did to her in there.
Where can I find him?
His usual haunt's the Phoenix
in Limehouse.
Piece of advice,
stay well away from it.
You get yourself killed,
your rent's still due
at the end of the month.
[Daimler] Your weekly
breakfast with your mother
has been cancelled, Your Highness.
You are over an hour late.
And what with your sister's birthday,
Her Majesty has a full day
of appointments.
[sighs]
Was she angry?
I've been with Louise.
We lost track of time, and I--
I know you have been absenting yourself
from the palace.
Your mother suspects as much, too,
but I managed to convince her,
for your sake,
that you would never be so foolish.
Thank you.
Her Majesty has worked hard
to keep your image from the public.
I pray I'm making myself understood.
[indistinct chatter]
[women laughing]
-[Eleanor] Last time…
-Who are they?
The children of Lord and Lady Yorke.
They'll be attending
her birthday soiree tonight.
Of course, you are not yet of age…
which is why I took it upon myself
to get you permission to attend.
What?
I was once your age, sir.
I understand the needs of a young man.
If sir can't pursue recreation,
perhaps we could bring
a little recreation to sir.
[door creaks]
[door closes]
Can I help?
I'm from Scotland Yard.
I'm looking for your daughter, Mr. Dixon.
Clara?
-I'm not her dad.
-Where is she?
I don't know. She sleeps downstairs.
Comes and goes as she pleases.
Listen, we don't go down there anymore.
This? This is the worst place we've been.
[Jessie] They're all
made up like families.
Hmm…
Uh…
[gasps]
Guys.
That's the guy I bumped into outside.
[Daimler] Make no mistake, sir,
your time leaving the palace is over.
So, we must find a way
to help you enjoy yourself.
And it's important you look your best
as many people will be excited
to finally lay eyes on you.
[women laughing]
[indistinct chatter]
Uh, why do you get to debut at 17,
and I had to wait until I was 18?
I suppose I'm just more mature than you.
[chuckles]
Happy birthday, sister.
I'm actually thrilled for you.
Our lives have been, well,
restrictive to say the least.
Especially yours.
Now that you're a little bit older,
there's fun to be had, Leopold.
Lots of fun.
My, oh, my. It never ceases to amaze me
how dull rich boys can be.
[chuckles]
Eleanor Margot.
[hesitating] Leopold.
Oh, I know who you are, Your Highness.
Now, why would they hide someone like you
away from view?
The girls and I were told
that you were frail and sickly. [chuckles]
You don't look frail or sickly to me.
Come.
I'm picking up for someone.
Excuse me.
Do you know someone called Sherlock?
Sherlock Holmes?
[Dr. Watson] Don't pretend like
you don't know who I'm talking about.
I've been in here before.
I've taken him from here a dozen times.
Hey! He's the police!
This guy's police!
[man] Run! This way!
[man] Just get out!
This one's asking questions, too.
This girl.
Shit.
[man] Hey! Hey!
[indistinct shouting]
[man 1] No! Not here.
Hey! Search down here!
-[man 2] Hurry up! Get down there!
-[man 1] Disappeared!
What happened to this?
[man 2] Go on downstairs.
Hmm?
It amuses me you think you can best me.
I am better educated, more wealthy,
and stronger than you are.
Tell me, what quality is it
you think you have
that I don't possess in greater abundance?
[breathing heavily]
[Taxidermist] She's always
been an unusual girl.
Me and my wife took her in.
She had no family, nowhere to go.
I tried to train her up in the trade.
She was talented.
She had a way with the skin.
But, well…
[Lestrade] I see. You had no idea.
I don't know.
For all we know, he could be her.
For all I know, you could be her.
[scoffs] If I was her,
how would I know that you once
shat your pants at Smithfield market, eh?
I was unwell, you prick.
[objects clattering]
Move or I'll gut you.
I mean it!
I don't think you will.
I don't think you're like that.
I saw what those men did to you.
What are you?
Clara, I understand
why you wanted to hurt them.
No, you don't.
They took everything from me.
[Spike] Jess?
-[grunts]
-[Jessie screams]
[Spike] Jess!
Spike, it's her. Quick!
[machines rumbling]
Who was she, Jessie? A man or a girl?
-A girl.
-[Lestrade] She was a girl.
She could be anyone now. She's gone.
What the hell did you say to her?
What the hell were you doing down there?
You let her go, didn't you?
Why would I let her go?
Because you're the same as her.
You're both monstrosities. Abominations.
You better shut your mouth!
Well, am I wrong? Look at her.
Is she normal?
If I had my way,
people like you would be eradicated.
[spits]
So, I said, Disraeli and the Tories?
Biggest criminals of them all.
[all laugh]
I'm sorry. Excuse me.
My friends adore you. [chuckles]
You do seem a little on edge,
Your Highness.
Perhaps I could help with that.
-[hesitating] I don't do that--
-Leopold.
It's time to have some fun.
I'll look after you.
Wouldn't you like to be looked after,
Your Highness?
Come.
[shudders]
Were you the girl looking for Sherlock?
Maybe.
I know where he is.
Let's get you out of here.
[Bea] Why are you helping me?
Just because we're users
doesn't mean we're bastards.
Everyone down here is just trying
to numb the pain of something.
Grief. Heartbreak.
[door closes]
Life in general.
If Sherlock's anywhere,
he'll be at Nooks Keep.
The hostel in Southwark.
That's where he uses sometimes.
Thank you so much.
Lestrade was right, Spike. I'm not normal.
[chuckles nervously]
-I've been saying that for years.
-Don't.
Why would you listen
to a twat like Lestrade?
Because this thing has changed me.
It's turned me into something else.
I don't know who I am anymore.
I don't even remember who I used to be.
Look at you, Spike.
Look how you're behaving around me.
Trying to protect me all the time.
I'm protective of you because…
you're special, Jessie.
Don't.
You've always been special.
All this stuff hasn't changed that.
Hasn't changed anything.
[Billy] Guys.
I've left word at 221B
about how you managed
to let a demon escape
onto the streets of London.
You're not a very good detective, are you?
Everything is black and white to you.
Angels and demons.
People aren't like that.
But you don't take the time
to understand people.
You don't put yourself in their shoes,
under their skin.
And how exactly would that help
to find a girl who can become anyone?
She may be able to change her appearance,
but she can't change who she is.
And I know who she is now.
She said to me in the basement
that the men took everything from her.
Me and my wife took her in.
She had no family.
[Jessie] They're all
made up like families.
She meant family.
That's what this is about.
That's what she's always wanted.
I've got the sickness and headaches
and pain lower down.
I think I'm with child.
I want to keep it if I am.
[midwife] You're not. You won't ever be.
You've got syphilis.
[Jessie] They gave her syphilis.
Took away her ability
to have a family of her own.
This isn't just about revenge.
She's gonna steal one of their families.
But none of the men who were killed
have families.
There must be someone
who she blames who does.
Someone who played a part in it.
I'm a family man.
This is a respectable establishment.
The landlord.
You all stay here. I mean it.
You're done with this case.
Tonight, I strike a blow against Satan.
Tonight, he loses
one of his foot soldiers.
[gasps] Jesus Christ, John!
[breathing heavily]
[landlord] Drink?
You've heard about Dave and Paul?
[groans]
[sighs]
[Taylor] They think it's one of the girls
you let us take upstairs is doing it.
The weird one from the taxidermist's.
One of us gave her syphilis.
You think that's why
she's going after you?
Maybe.
Maybe all she wanted
was a family of her own.
Somewhere where
she didn't feel as strange.
Maybe that's what we stole from her.
Paul, Dave, me.
And you.
I…
I've watched you let men
take women upstairs every night.
[voice warping] Sit… down.
You took from me everything that I had.
Everything I was.
[in Clara's voice] And now I'm no one.
[breath trembling]
It's easy pretending to be someone else
when you've been stripped away to nothing.
It wasn't me. I didn't do anything to you.
I didn't give you syph--
You enabled them!
That makes you just as guilty.
Don't worry.
I'm gonna be a much better you
than you ever were.
I'm looking for someone. Sherlock Holmes.
He sometimes stays here.
I have to speak to him.
Tell him it's urgent.
[Dr. Watson] Dear Beatrice,
congratulations.
Today you learnt that a lie can be bought
rather cheaply from a drug addict.
I told you that
there is not one quality you possess
that I do not possess more of
in greater abundance.
Consider our arrangement over.
You will never step foot in 221B again.
You will never speak to Sherlock Holmes.
You played, and you lost.
The game is over.
I'm sorry, Mum. I tried.
[echoed laughter]
Goodbye.
[breath trembling]
[groaning]
[gasping]
Supper's on the stove.
What's got into you?
Hello, my little ones.
Hello, my precious lovelies.
Hmm.
[kisses]
[kisses]
[bones cracking]
[exhales]
[indistinct chatter]
[woman chuckling]
[voices echoing]
[exhales] Look at the flames.
[chuckles] They're dancing
around like constellations.
[Eleanor chuckles] All right, Wordsworth.
[Leopold] Yes.
I could run away and write poetry.
[chuckles]
Would you like me to write you a poem?
[Eleanor] No.
I think you should take me somewhere
more private, Your Highness.
[indistinct chatter]
[bell tolling]
[voices echoing]
[woman vomiting and gagging]
What?
Um, shouldn't we help her? [chuckles]
[breathes heavily]
Why? She's just an attention-seeker.
She can look after herself.
I look after me.
Come on.
[hesitates] I'm sorry.
I… I don't want this.
You don't have it.
What are you talking about?
You don't have what she has.
Leopold.
[sighs]
[groans]
[objects crashing]
-[gasps softly]
-[thudding]
-[Lestrade] I know you're in here, demon!
-[shuddering]
[Lestrade] It's over! Get down here now!
[breathing heavily]
Watch the children.
[breathing heavily]
Your mother told me
you were too stubborn to listen.
I begged her to let me
give you one more chance.
In this place, it is I who have been
your biggest advocate.
I pushed back against doctors,
against my superiors,
to give you the most normal life I could.
And this is how you repay me.
I don't belong here-- [sniffles]
If you had been born to any other family
you simply would not be.
It is your privilege
that has kept you alive.
You wish for what you call a normal life,
but you are not normal.
And will never be so.
[panting]
-[sniffles] Goodbye, Daimler.
-You'll kill yourself!
[gasps]
[grunts]
[Daimler] Guards! [breathing heavily]
[door slams open]
[Lestrade] Thank God you're here.
She killed him. She killed the landlord.
She is him. She took his skin,
she took his face!
-Calm down. Which way did she go?
-Into the park, out the back.
[Billy] Come on!
[panting]
[gasps]
[door opens]
-[all panting]
-[Spike] Careful.
[Lestrade] She ran into the trees there!
[panting] You guys go ahead.
Find her before Lestrade does.
I'll try and slow him down.
[grunts]
[breathing heavily]
[Lestrade] Mind how you tread. Careful.
[cracking]
[birds screeching]
Why didn't you chase her into the woods?
I wanted to go back
and see if the wife was okay.
She was distressed. Sobbing. Poor woman.
-[Jessie gasps]
-[Lestrade] All right?
What was the plan?
Wander around for a bit,
and then slip off into the night
when no one was watching?
What gave me away?
You were too nice to me.
Let me see you again.
[shudders] The real you.
[moaning in pain]
[Clara grunts]
[gasping]
[shudders]
If we hadn't found you,
-you would never have changed back again.
-[bones cracking]
You'd have stayed as him.
I hate the real me.
I'm stuck as me.
What do you do
when the real you doesn't fit?
When the real you's a freak?
Honestly, I don't know.
[whimpers]
Maybe you've just got
to keep going until…
you find a way
to be friends with yourself.
[scoffs] How long does that take?
I don't know.
I wish I knew.
[Clara] I didn't want
to kill the policeman.
[sobbing] He was gonna hurt me.
If you were to overpower me now,
and take this gun,
if you escaped, would you kill again?
There's no one else to kill.
[Billy] Jess!
-[Spike] Jess!
-[Billy] Jessie!
I need something from you.
I need to see how you got your powers.
Give me the strength.
Give me the power…
to hurt those who've hurt me.
[hisses]
[buzzing]
[gasps]
[shuddering]
[gasps]
[Spike] Jessie!
[Billy] Jess!
[Spike] Jess!
You should try and overpower me now.
Thank you.
[shudders]
[Jessie] Yeah, and I told you,
she ran off into the woods.
An inspector from Scotland Yard's
had his face removed
and we were at the crime scene.
Someone's gonna get in hot shit for this.
-We need to get our stories straight.
-My story is straight.
All right. If that's the story,
then that's the story.
But I'm having a pint.
Mother of God, we've earned a pint.
[gasps]
Leo? Are you all right, mate?
[breathing heavily] She's compassionate.
What?
Beatrice.
The quality she has, it's…
it's compassion.
[thunder rumbling]
[Mrs. Hudson] I take it
you didn't find him, then.
You're better off without the likes
of Sherlock in your life, I tell ya.
Druggies are all the same.
Thieving, lying scum who would pimp
their own grandma for a score.
They're not scum.
Some of them might lie and cheat,
but they're just people.
People like you and me.
People who are just trying
to block out the pain of something.
Like grief or heartbreak.
Ha! Heartbreak. Christ,
you're even more naive than you look.
Wait. The lady I asked you about earlier,
the one who knew Sherlock,
how long after she left the scene
did he go off the rails?
I don't know, it was ages ago.
About the same time, I would have thought.
They were together. Oh, my God.
Idiot.
[Jessie] I did what you said.
-[birds chirping]
-I went into one of their minds again.
[Linen Man] And what did you see?
I saw the dark thing from my nightmares.
The thing from the tunnels.
I think they're linked.
I think the things I dream about
have something to do with the Rip.
What if the nightmares
are the key to everything?
What if the location of the Rip has been
in my head this whole time?
We're getting closer. I can feel it.
I need to show you something.
This is where I really am.
On a ship on the Atlantic.
I set out after we first met.
-For London.
-What?
I didn't want to tell you
in case I scared you,
but I'm almost there.
