The Job (2013) s01e02 Episode Script

Cosmopolitan

More than 12 million Americans are actively looking for jobs.
I'm fresh out of college.
I'm hungry.
I'm ready to work.
But with so many candidates applying for each job opening, the odds are stacked against them, and the employer has all the power.
In the last year alone, I've been on over 70 interviews.
You can send out 1,000 resumes.

I noticed that you're conversational in Spanish.
Uh, quiero es traba trabajar.
If a candidate makes a good impression, they'll find themselves in a once-in-a-lifetime dilemma, because waiting in the wings are three other highly desirable companies who want to pounce And snatch up a candidate with a job offer of their own.
There's no way you're gonna get this job.
I'm officially offering you a position.
For the first time, The Job candidate can choose The Job they want.
I'm gonna personally take you under my wing.
If I offered you a job right now, would you say yes? Tonight, on The Job, our candidates are interviewing with the biggest women's magazine in the world: Cosmopolitan.
Cosmopolitan is the west point of magazines.
Every day I have more resumes in my inbox than I do carbs for breakfast.
Cosmopolitan delivers the latest news on relationships, sex, fashion, beauty.
Tonight, The Job we are offering is an editorial assistant position.
A good editorial assistant is absolutely essential to the mix of Cosmopolitan.
It is the vodka in the cocktail.
An editorial assistant position is really a dream position.

Only one of these five highly qualified candidates can win their dream job.

When my competition looks at me, they're probably thinking, "what is grandma doing here?" But they certainly can't rule me out.
Or will another company try to lure them away? The nerve-wracking, nail-biting interview of their lives starts now.
This is The Job.
Good evening, everyone, I am Lisa ling, and welcome to The Job.
All over the country, getting a great job has never been harder, and nowhere is that truer than here in New York City, the global business capital for finance, fashion, and media.
But tonight, we are going to be part of the solution.
In this city, where more than 350 magazines are published, five highly qualified candidates from all kinds of backgrounds, from all across the country, will interview for their dream job at Cosmopolitan, the best-selling monthly magazine in America and the biggest women's magazine in the world.
Please welcome, from Cosmopolitan, executive editor Joyce Chang Senior editor Jessica knoll And in the middle, a giant in the magazine business, editor-in-chief joanna coles.
Thank you all so much for being here.
Lisa, my mission is to find the brightest and best women or men across America to work for America's best magazine.
Joyce, what qualities are you looking for in an editorial assistant at Cosmo? We're looking for a team player, and someone with great creative energy, and who has a great eye.
Again, huge opportunity.
You guys want to meet the candidates? First off, from white hall, Maryland, rachele trainor.
I am rachele trainor.
I'm from white hall, Maryland, and I grew up on a dairy goat farm there.
I kind of found my love for fashion when I was 11 or 12, and I went to school for it out in Denver, Colorado.
I landed an internship at Marie Claire magazine.
While working there for only a short period of time, my mom became ry ill, so I decided to go home and be with her.
Now that everything is okay, I've been looking for work, and to get to a magazine like Cosmo would really make me realize that this is why my road has led me to where I am.
Up next, from Washington, D.
C.
, please welcome Carlos bell.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Carlos bell, and I'm from Washington, D.
C.
, but I currently live in New York.
At a very early age, I'd always been interested in art, so when I found this discovery that fashion could be art, like, I needed to get an internship.
I had my first internship at gq magazine.
I didn't have enough money to move to New York, so I stayed in D.
C.
for two more weeks and commuted back and forth via bus.
From gq, I went to teen vogue and Elle.
Throughout my career, you know, I've done a lot of internships, and I think I strategically placed myself in a arena where I could take a editorial position, so, you know, I would just love to work for Cosmo.
[Cheers and applause our third candidate, from Kansas City, Missouri, Brenda clevenger.
Hi, I'm Brenda clevenger from Kansas City.
I've been an entrepreneur for 25 years.
I went to college to become a journalist.
My first job was at the Jones store, writing fashion copy about men's underwear.
I moved back to Kansas City and delved into fashion and started blogging for midlife women, and have poured my heart and soul into that, and this would be a phenomenal extension.
Next up, diandra barnwell from Albuquerque, new Mexico.
I'm diandra barnwell, and I'm from Albuquerque, new Mexico.
I just recently graduated from the fashion institute of design and merchandising.
I was fortunate enough, when I was younger, to grow up in Europe.
That experience really ignited my passion for fashion, art, and all things culture.
You don't have to come from a big city.
You don't have to come from a lot of money.
But if you're willing to sacrifice, take a risk, and stand up for who you are, dreams do come true, and today is the beginning of mine.
And finally, from Chicago, Illinois, Kristina leng.
Hi, everyone.
My name's Kristina leng.
I'm 26 years old, from Chicago, Illinois.
I'm an ex-division one college ice hockey player/ fashion design major.
Over the last few years, I have seriously struggled on finding my path in life.
Currently, I'm working as a bartender, server, promotional model, and stylist just to get by, and I'm just very thankful to be here, competing for this amazing position.
So these final five were selected from thousands of applicants, and tonight, they will compete for their dream job at Cosmopolitan.
Now, just like in the real world, there's competition for great talent, and it's time to reveal a secret that we've been keeping from our candidates.
We've invited three guest companies to The Job tonight to observe our candidates.
Later in the show, these three additional companies will have the chance to pounce on the candidate that they themselves would like to hire.
We have archetypeme, whowhatwear.
Com, and fashionista.
They're all from the fashion and media industries, and they're all looking for their next great employee.
Thank you all so much for being here.
So now, let's get down to business, and what better way to give Cosmo a chance to evaluate our candidates than to have them make a trial run of the actual job they'll be doing at Cosmo.
Let's see what happened when we we sent them to work with Jessica and Joyce for one day at Cosmo.
Just a few months ago, I was sitting in school.
I was taking my finals, getting ready for graduation.
And now, I'm here in the Cosmo offices.
I need to be pinched, 'cause I feel like I'm dreaming.
Hi.
Welcome to Cosmo.
Today, your assignment is going to be something that a real editorial assistant here at the magazine would do.
What your assignment is, you're going to be hitting the streets for our "what's on your mind?" Page.
You can talk to as many people as you want and ask them what's on their mind.
You'll have professional photographers supplied to you.
So you'll come back, you'll pick your favorite picture, and then, you'll have some time to write copy and captions for that picture.
It's a cut-throat business, the magazine business.
Based on your work today, one of you will be eliminated.
Elimination is so nerve-wracking to me.
I had no idea that, you know, somebody would be eliminated after this assignment.
Like, hopefully, it's not me.
You know, I'm gonna try my best, so Good luck, and we can't wait to see what you bring us.
Thank you.
The other candidates, they better look out, because I have Helen gurley brown's DNA, and I need to get on the street, and I need to work it.
I need to do what I'm all about, and that is asking people questions, getting really great answers, and writing it.
You're gonna have to bear with me.
I'm in my power heels.
No, that's totally fine.
Joyce and Jessica want us to hit the streets of New York and interview random individuals on the street about what's on their mind, whether it be fashion, beauty, health, anything.
How are you? Are you busy? Because I would love to talk to you about fashion.
So what are you doing right now? I'm a dancer at ailey school.
Okay, so tell us about your look.
You look cool.
You look-yeah, you absolutely look cool.
Thank you.
Would you mind if we took a couple photos of you? Maybe box out the door.
The door there you go.
- That's awesome.
- Chin up a little bit.
Yeah.
Okay, I have a couple of questions.
What how do you feel about dating younger men? - Sh I have.
- Cool.
Oh, you have? Yeah.
What makes it different, you know, when they're younger? Is the sex better? Yeah, yeah.
Oh, the sex is better? Perfect.
Do they last longer? Pretty much like toys, yeah.
Okay.
Let's get a picture of you.
Joyce and I are about to hit the streets and see how the candidates are doing, and I'm excited to see what they're up to.
So how would you describe yourself? I think I look for things that I can change up over time, but that I think Oh, great.
Good.
- She zeroed in.
- Yes.
She's our girl.
I like her bag.
- Yeah.
- I like that she's got a look.
Interestingly enough, I think she is art directing the shot.
I think the Cosmo editors are gonna like the uniqueness of having a lovely 25-year-old with gentlemen that didn't know her posing with her, and say, "hey, here's a girl that went the extra mile, and she's the one.
" She's bringing a guy into the story.
This is now creepy.
See, now, she has her professors lurking around, leering at her.
The student.
Um, this is not a Cosmo shoot.
You're looking good, Alison.
When Joyce and Jessica walked up, it excited me that they'd seen the poor taste and people that Brenda, you know, picked.
A little bit closer.
Right here.
At the end of the day, this is a magazine.
You have to be able to edit the best choices, and I don't think that Brenda knows how to do that.
Okay, when we come back, our three guest companies, they are closely watching our candidates, waiting to jump on one of them and make a job offer of their own.
That's next on The Job.
Keep moving, and don't be afraid to move sidewards.
People talk about the career ladder, but I think of it as more of a jungle gym.
And don't be afraid to take a cut in salary.
I've done that twice, and both times, it paid off in the long run.
Welcome back to The Job, where five very eager candidates have just set out on The Job interview of a lifetime.
Now, before the break, you saw the candidates pounding the pavement in search of inspiration.
Will they crack under pressure or deliver the goods? Let's see how it all turned out.
You guys, go left.
Our assignment today is to hit the streets and talk to as many people as we want.
We take a picture of them, and we're gonna write a little caption about it for the "what's on your mind?" Part of the magazine.
What are you listening to? Without you by Usher.
- Really? - Yeah.
Okay.
Where are you going? I'm going to Alvin ailey dance theater right now.
- Oh, so you're a dancer? - Yeah, hip-hop dancer.
- Oh, cool.
- Yeah.
Tell us what's going on here.
I want to know.
Um, well, we're dancers.
This is wonderful.
You guys are amazing.
- Awesome.
- Awesome.
What do you do? Uh, I have a store.
- Ooh! What kind of store? - Vintage store.
Oh, I love yeah, so you own it already.
So we're gonna take a couple of pictures.
Seriously, like, I want to die right now.
Yes, I love it! Great energy.
Yes! Look at the camera for some.
Yeah.
Do like this.
Like, "ooh, I'm curious.
" So cute! And he's also paying attention to the shot.
- That's great.
- Yeah.
This should be really interesting.
We only get to pick one? When the photos came out on the table, I picked out mine, everyone sorted through and found theirs, and I was kinda surprised that I had a pretty big stack to sort through.
Even though I loved all of them, I had to pick one.
"Dance Balance" Um That's a good one.
"Hearing the beats of Usher "allows the city streets to disappear.
The hip-hop dancer showcases his love for music.
" "Allison.
Men hovering.
Bring me home the jewels.
" "The beat on the street.
Meet candi.
This vintage store owner is in her mid-30s.
" I am definitely not a writer.
You know, I can talk for days, weeks, years, decades, but to put all that into 30, you know, words, it's impossible.
I really hope they like this.
Okay, joanna, I can't wait to hear how you and your team thought our candidates did.
Now, remember, one of our candidates will be eliminated based on how they handled this assignment.
Well, I think you all discovered it's not quite as easy as it looks, is it? No.
We put all your pictures into a layout.
- Now, diandra, darling,- Let's get the grammar right.
Let's get the spelling right.
You've got two words in your caption spelt wrong.
You have the word "aesthetics" wrong and you have the word "synchronization" wrong.
We are a magazine.
Spelling matters.
Jessica, what did you feel about Kristina's picture of the dancer? You know, I like that you posed her.
I like that you got her looking very confident.
In terms of the caption that you wrote, "chalk full of attitude," it should say "chock full of attitude.
" Not "chalk" like chalk on a you know, chalkboard.
Joyce, you actually watched Brenda sort of stage directing this or art directing it.
It was one of the best girls that we saw of the day, it was one of the best shots, and then, it went so wrong.
I had fallen off the Cosmo radar.
Um, I'm not a regular subscriber anymore, since I'm 50.
I understand that, but The Job is at Cosmo - Mm-hmm.
- So what I would have expected is for you to bother to go to the newsstand, sit down, and read that most recent issue cover to cover.
What about rachele's shot? The language is really off.
It's just very flowery - Mm-hmm.
- And that's just so not the tone of Cosmopolitan, and that is a huge part of The Job as an editor is, like, you've got to be able to pick up that tone.
Right, so that brings us to Carlos.
I liked the way you handled the people that you came across on the street, and I am thrilled, Carlos, because we are going to use this image in an upcoming issue of Cosmo.
Thank you! Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Joanna, after this first test, who will be out of the running for The Job at Cosmo? I mean, you all bring great positives in this situation.
Diandra, you just can't hand in an assignment, or a letter, or a memo at any job with misspellings.
Kristina, um, "chalk full" doesn't make sense, and you know what would happen if we ran that in the magazine? We would get hundreds of emails from people pointing it out.
I mean, people would just laugh at us and think we were fools.
Brenda, I thought you were very sympathetic to the people you stopped, even though I know you felt anxious about doing it, and I loved the way you referenced Helen gurley brown in your letter.
But for me, it's a deal-breaker that you didn't read the magazine before you came to do the assignment, and I feel that we can't offer you an office at Cosmo at this moment.
- Appreciate it.
- Well, good luck.
- Good luck, Brenda.
- Okay.
Thank you so much, Brenda.
Appreciate you being here Bye.
And good luck.
Okay, that means the four of you, rachele, Carlos, diandra, and Kristina are still in the running to become an editorial assistant at Cosmopolitan.
And when we come back, it's going to get a lot harder.
Our candidates are going to be intensely evaluated in the form of a quiz to prove how much they know about Cosmo.
And later in the show, our three guest companies will have the chance to jump on a candidate that they themselves would like to hire.
That's next on The Job.
Gen "y" is notorious for acting too familia with superiors.
Don't sign your emails "a" instead of "Alison.
" Don't use cutesy language or emoticons.
You're talking to your employer, not a friend.
Better to err on the side of being too formal than too casual.
Welcome back to The Job, where our four remaining candidates, rachele, Carlos, diandra, and Kristina, are competing for their dream job at Cosmo in front of the magazine industry's biggest editors.
Also with us tonight are three guest companies.
They're closely watching our candidates, waiting to jump on one of them, possibly, and make a job offer of their own.
Now, before you go on any job interview, you have to do your homework, and now, we're gonna find out if our candidates have done theirs.
In a rapid-fire round, our panel will grill you on the essential knowledge you need if you want to make it at Cosmo.
So candidates, take a deep breath Exhale.
Joanna, let the quiz begin.
If you come to work at a magazine like Cosmopolitan, you need to be on top of celebrity news, and I need to know that you are thoroughly engaged, immersed, bathed in popular culture.
Kristina.
Your three questions start now.
Before she took over as editor at Cosmo, Helen gurley brown wrote a landmark 1962 best seller that urged women to be financially independent and to enjoy sex.
What was the title? Sex and the single girl.
What avatar actress became the first-ever cover girl of the new Cosmopolitan for latinas? Nunez.
A "chignon" is a classic style of what? India? Thank you.
Rachele.
Our "practice safe sun" campaign helps inform women about how to protect themselves against what disease? Skin cancer.
A recent summer footwear trend is about a style of sandal inspired by ancient Rome and typically featuring multiple leather straps.
What style is it? The gladiator sandal.
What actor divorced Scarlett Johansson in 2011 only to marry Blake lively one year later? I don't know.
Thank you.
Carlos.
Named for an island in the mediterranean, what style of slim pants are cropped at the mid-calf and often feature a small notch on the outside bottom hem? I'm gonna have to say cargo.
Dina and Michael are the spotlight-loving parents of what flame-haired actress? Julia Roberts? The Cosmopolitan collection, the magazine's first-ever fashion line, is sold at the 600-plus stores of what major U.
S.
retailer? - Um, I'm not sure.
- Thank you.
Diandra.
What is the name of the page or section of the magazine that lists the staff and their positions at the periodical? It is called the index.
What animal term refers to the short, tapered heel of a shoe, which is usually under 11/2 inches tl? It's called a kitten heel.
In 1972, which actor famously posed nude on a bear rug as the centerfold of a very controversial and popular issue of Cosmopolitan? The actor was Burt Reynolds.
Thank you.
Joanna, how did the candidates do? Carlos, you got precisely zero.
I mean, really, have you ever heard, Carlos, of a mediterranean island called "cargo"? Kristina, you were asked what a chignon is.
It's a style of hair.
Rachele, I was disappointed that you didn't even guess.
Fake it till you make it.
My mind just went blank, and that's why I said I don't know.
Diandra, you so confidently answered "index," I actually believed you for a second Before I realized it was actually "masthead.
" It was masthead.
I feel like I heard the question wrong.
Okay, but that makes me nervous.
Are you going to hear questions wrong in the office? No, absolutely not.
Okay, it's now time to find out who's moving forward and who didn't pass the test.
So I will turn this over to our Cosmopolitan panel.
I think it's important that everybody make a strong impression, and I feel like I haven't gotten a sense of Kristina's presence as much as I have some of the others.
Carlos, it's really surprising to me that you would come back with an answer like Julia Roberts.
I mean, that, to me, is like 20 years ago, maybe that would have been the answer.
Okay.
So it's between Kristina and Carlos.
Kristina got more questions right than Carlos, but I don't doubt Carlos' passion for fashion.
I do slightly doubt yours, Kristina.
I'm sorry, but we're not going to offer you a desk at Cosmo this time.
- Okay.
- Thank you.
Thank you so much for this opportunity.
Whew, that was a very, very close round, but congratulations to the three of you.
You are all one step closer to getting The Job at Cosmo.
And now, one of you is about to become the front-runner.
Joanna, Joyce, and Jessica, you have the opportunity to protect either rachele, Carlos, or diandra in case one of our three guest companies archetypeme, who what wear, or fashionista would like to make them a job offer of their own.
So, joanna, please write down the candidate who, if you had to make the hiring decision right now, you would declare and protect as your front-runner, and seal it in the envelope.
So, candidates, again, this is not a guarantee that you will get The Job, but right now, one of you has been identified as the front-runner for The Job at Cosmo.
When we come back, the pressure builds on our final three candidates, and one of them may be forced to choose between a possible job at Cosmo, or a guaranteed job at one of our guest companies.
That's coming up on The Job.
You got lucky with this one.
Go easy on self-promotion.
Nobody likes a braggart in the office.
And you need your colleagues to help you do your best.
And put your energy into your work.
Don't get sucked into the black hole of office politics.
Welcome back to The Job in New York.
I'm Lisa ling.
Now, before the break, joanna, Joyce, and Jessica, we asked you to write down the name of one of the candidates to protect in case one of our three guest companies would like to make them a job offer of their own.
We'll find out the identity of the front-runner in a bit.
So, Cosmo panel, what would you say is the most important quality that you're looking to see in rachele, Carlos, and diandra? At Cosmo, we're a very tight, well-oiled machine, and we're looking for someone who dots all their "I"s and crosses all their "t" s, literally.
This is a magazine, and it's really important to know it from the cover to the inside to the very last page.
You have to understand what Cosmo is about.
So tell us about the challenge.
With this challenge, you're going to look at a Cosmo cover, and there is one thing wrong with this cover.
It's a deliberate mistake.
So your job is to identify what's wrong with the cover.
Okay, let's start seeing some of the covers.
Rachele, take a go at the first one.
Now, there's something wrong with this cover.
What do you think it would be? Any thoughts? Um "50 ways to pay for college"? Excellent.
Exactly the right answer.
We have many ideas for how to pay for college, but we would never put it up in that top, left-hand position.
That is always reserved for love, relationships, and sex material because that's the key part of Cosmo.
Well done.
Well observed.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Let's go to diandra, and let's look at our next cover.
What strikes you as odd about this picture? - The lipstick? - Correct.
Other magazines put products on the cover, but it's just not part of our iconic look.
We are all about the fierce, fun, and fearless woman and all the information and fun stuff you're gonna get inside the magazine.
All right, Carlos, you're up.
Now, there's something wrong with this cover.
What do you think it would be? Wow.
Um I want to say the "naughty" part.
No, it's not that.
It's something much more obvious than that, and you're gonna kick yourself.
Let me ask diandra and rachele first, actually.
- Oh, I know.
- Go on.
It's the wrong person name with the celebrity.
Correct.
Very nice work.
I thought those were pretty difficult.
And I'm sure that challenge has given the bosses at Cosmo a lot to think about.
But things are now going to get even more interesting.
Archetypeme, who what wear, and fashionista, do you have an offer to make to any of our candidates? If you do, press the button in front of you.
Okay, eunice, from archetypeme, an innovative website that re-defines the concept of search in creating your own personal style, to which candidate would you like to make an offer? Well, there was one candidate, in particular, that stood out to us, mainly because their background.
So the one candidate in particular that we'd love to make an offer to is diandra.
Wow.
Diandra, you have a big decision to make.
You have a guaranteed job offer from archetypeme, and it's not certain that you are going to get The Job at Cosmopolitan.
And I saw you getting a little bit emotional.
Yes.
Tell me what you're feeling right now.
I'm feeling very anxious, a little overwhelmed because I know I have a big decision to make.
And it's gonna be hard because I came here with the clear intention of interviewing for Cosmopolitan.
And now, with this great offer, it's a little bit overwhelming.
Okay.
So, joanna, have any thoughts? So of course, the minute someone else is interested in you, I immediately want to re-assess.
That's right, it's not certain that you are going to get The Job at Cosmopolitan.
You have this guaranteed job offer from archetypeme.
But I understand why they're interested in diandra.
You have great poise.
Well, now I think everybody is curious about the name that Cosmopolitan put in the envelope earlier on the show.
Joanna, well us who your front-runner is inside the envelope.
Just to make the decision a little bit more difficult.
Yeah, I think so.
Okay, diandra, think hard, think long.
We're gonna give you a couple of minutes, but then we're gonna need your answer when we come back.
Interview etiquette.
Do not waltz into an interview with your latte in hand.
This is not a chat with a peer over coffee.
This is an interview.
Same goes for your water bottle; Loud, jangly bracelets; Sunglasses on your head; And really strong perfume.
Welcome back to The Job.
Now, before the break, diandra was presented with a major career opportunity at one of tonight's guest companies, archetypeme.
Joanna, do you have any idea what you would have done if you had a guaranteed job offer on the table at 22 years old? I'm a firm believer that you have to really ask yourself the hard questions and go for what you actually want, and if you don't get it, then to find something else.
But archetypeme is a guaranteed offer, and I'm not in the position to do that yet.
And you're up against two really good candidates.
So, diandra, are you going to accept The Job at archetypeme or hold out for the possible job at Cosmo? In the end, I'm so thankful to get any recognition from archetypeme, but my loyalty lies with Cosmopolitan.
Okay.
Well, eunice, thank you so much for making the offer.
And, diandra, you are now still in the running for the editorial assistant job at Cosmo.
Joanna, it's time for you to let us know which two of these candidates will stay on the stage and be in contention for The Job at Cosmo.
Well, this is a really difficult decision.
Rachele, I know that you've had to make hard personal decisions in your life, which have impacted your ability to pursue a career as fast as you might have done.
Mmhmm.
Um And I am thrilled, Carlos, that I'm able to use your picture in a forthcoming issue of Cosmopolitan.
That said, I see your future as a fashion stylist, and so we're not going to offer you an office at Cosmo right now.
So I wish you luck in that area.
Thank you.
Well, you'll be seeing your photograph in the pages of Cosmo soon.
Thank you so much for being part of this, and good luck.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So it's all come down to rachele and diandra.
Only one of them can win their dream job at Cosmo.
Now, anyone who's ever been through a highly competitive job interview process knows that, ultimately, you have to face some very difficult questions.
This is the final interview.
Take it away with our first question.
So, diandra, let's start with you.
If I go to your Facebook page, will I find anything that might make me question hiring you? Actually, joanna, no.
I'm very proud of being a young woman, and that often comes along with the territory of having fun.
You want to go out with your friends and your girlfriends, but at the same time, I do have family on Facebook.
I'm very conscious of who I am and who I represent.
And I feel that it's always important to maintain myself at a certain caliber.
And it's always the highest caliber possible.
So no, I don't think so.
So no topless photos? Absolutely not.
Rachele, what about you? I actually am one in a million.
I don't have Facebook and I don't have Twitter.
Are you up to speed on social media then? That makes you sound a bit of a dinosaur.
No.
I am up to date.
I, uh, do pinterest and other social media.
I just don't do Facebook.
Okay, thank you both.
My question is a tough question.
What do you bring to this job that the person standing next to you can't? I'll start with you, diandra.
As far as what I bring to this job, it's just me, and it's the versatility that comes along with me and my background.
Yes, I've worked in fashion.
I've had various positions, whether it was fashion production assistant or fashion stylist.
I'm a fashion writer on the side.
I've also done different production work, and I feel that my diversity and my versatility, not only in my background, but in my personal life, is what's gonna make me stand out and set me apart.
Okay, I like the way we heard you speak like that.
It felt to me like you dropped the prom queen facade, and suddenly, we got to this real passion and this sense of you.
Rachele.
When being different than diandra, um, I have been able to dabble in a couple of different areas of fashion, starting at Marie Claire.
And, um Do you remember me from when you were at Marie Claire? - Yes, I do.
And - I guess I'm trying to figure out why I don't remember you.
II kinda just put my head down and worked, and don't take this wrong you're intimidating.
So I guess I never thought to have the guts to walk in and be, like, "hi, joanna, I'm rachele, and, um" So let me ask you something.
You were offered the chance of a full-time position at Marie Claire.
You were two weeks off graduating, and you didn't talk to anybody about how that could work for you? Yes, timing was bad then because I was just getting into my career at that point.
My mother became ill with a brain tumor and something going on with her heart.
So it wasn't just the flu, where it was, like, "I have to run home.
" It was a little more serious than that.
Well, well done for making a decision that put your family first.
I think a lot of young women wouldn't have had the strength of character to do that, and it feels like you made the right decision for you.
Thank you.
So let me ask you a question.
This job this opportunity Yes.
Uh, relies on someone living in New York.
Are you both prepared to leave the life that you obviously have behind, and start afresh, alone, in New York City? I'll be honest with you, joanna.
This would be, absolutely, the biggest risk that I've taken thus far.
It's not the biggest risk.
You just turned down a job.
Second-biggest risk.
Excuse me.
You're right.
Lapse of judgment.
But there's a quote, I think it's neale Donald walsch, that said, "life begins at the end of your comfort zone," and that is what I'm doing today.
Well, very nicely put.
Very nicely put.
Rachele.
When I got out of college, I moved to New York, so I have lived here.
I will be here in a second.
When you live in New York, it gets in your blood, and you can't leave.
You have to come back.
I want to be here.
Lisa, I find this an incredibly difficult decision.
I think we have two exceptional young women who've had to make all sorts of decisions earlier in their life than perhaps most people do.
And I actually feel quite humble to have met you both.
And this is a tricky very tricky decision.
Well, that is the end of the interview.
Let's give them a round of applause, everyone.
We're only a few minutes away from finding out which of these two very talented candidates will be offered The Job at Cosmo.
The offer is next.
Welcome back to The Job, where tonight, rachele and diandra have just completed the final interview in this grueling process to win their dream job at Cosmo.
Joanna, who is going to be coming to work for you at Cosmo? Well, Lisa, I actually feel a little nauseous.
What I found interesting about this process and I wish we could put everybody that we hire through this process is that, um, you really watch someone under pressure, and you have a roller coaster of feelings about them.
Diandra, you took a huge risk turning down a guaranteed, fully paid job at archetypeme.
Rachele, you took a huge risk going back to finish your college degree and then having to leave the workplace to go and look after an ill parent.
So what does it come down to? Oh, God, hold my hand.
Yeah.
Please.
Thank you.
This is a really, really hard decision.
Oh, my goodness, they're even they're even holding hands.
That makes it even worse.
I feel like I'm going to cry.
And I never cry.
I haven't cried since 1983.
Um Uh the person that we are going to offer the desk and the full-time job at Cosmo to is Diandra.
Oh, my God.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you so much.
Diandra, is there anything you would like to say to your new bosses at Cosmo? Oh, my gosh.
I just want to say thank you so much.
I cannot thank you enough for taking a chance on a 22-year-old fresh out of college, and this means the world to me, and I promise I will not let you down.
Thank you so much.
All right, I hope so.
Rachele, it's important to me that you can take something positive from this.
Do you feel you can? Absolutely.
I cannot thank you enough for just looking at my resume and giving me the chance to present myself to you guys.
Well, that was very graciously put, so we're going to offer you three months' paid employment at Cosmo to get yourself another opportunity and to try to take another chance in New York.
To give me the opportunity to find my way back to I mean you, joanna.
I cannot thank you enough.
I-I mean, really.
