The Last Ship (2014) s04e08 Episode Script

Lazaretto

1 [SPEAKING GREEK.]
[SPEAKING GREEK.]
You know Troy started a war over an apple? Dad, are you gonna talk to me? - Take it.
- [SPEAKS GREEK.]
- [CHUCKLES.]
- [TRADITIONAL MUSIC PLAYING.]
What are you going back to that den of wolves for? [CHUCKLES.]
I was born in the States, Dad.
- It's a good job.
- You got a good job here with me.
Your place is with me.
We're pushing the boundaries of science, of what is possible.
You wanna go back there and do some staid, non-credited, - boring government job, Christos? - Dad, I-I wanna go home.
Christos, your home is here.
You're going to graduate and you're gonna stay here, with me, where you belong, in my lab, in our lab.
Don't turn your back on me, son.
We're gonna do great things, you and me.
[CHUCKLES.]
VELLEK: Thing of beauty.
Perfezione.
FLETCHER: The Rust is completely gone.
That is truly something, Dr.
Vellek.
"Something," Fletcher? In 24 hours, I wiped out the Red Rust, and in its place, I created, sui generis, a completely new species of plant.
A healthy plant.
It's not "something," Fletcher.
This is the transformation of history.
It's Galileo.
Einstein, even.
It's beautiful, Father.
Thank you, Lucia.
Very soon, your country will eat again as kings.
I'm relieved.
'Cause of what I've done here, me and my son.
It was you, Dad.
It was always you.
Father, we need to talk about the American ship.
- What about it? - They'll be coming after us.
So what? It's one ship.
Stavros commands an entire fleet.
Surely you can take care of one United States Navy ship, Admiral? Of course, il dottore.
The problem's è finite.
Finito.
I'm not even gonna get angry at my middle son, Giorgio, who can't seem to take one step without putting his foot in a pile of dung.
Look [GLASSES CLATTER.]
This is our beginning and the end of anyone who stands in our way.
Capisce? Good.
[DRAWERS OPEN, CLOSE.]
Giorgio, where's Demetrius? Otherwise occupied.
And since when is Stavros an admiral? A reward from my father.
Apparently, he earned it.
Your father's quite harsh with you, isn't he? I risked my life for him.
That American bitch nearly blew my head off.
The one from the ship with the long black hair and the serious attitude? You know Sasha.
Yeah, but the old man doesn't give a rat's ass.
All he cares about are is hippie mind control drugs.
Mind control drugs? What are you talking about? Leave me alone, Fletcher.
I am not in the mood.
[ASCENDING FOOTSTEPS.]
Vellek wants to feed the world on his terms and neutralize anyone who tries to oppose him.
Same as every tyrant in history.
He's just come up with a novel plan.
That's why the world still needs people with "level nine" aggression.
You think that's a good thing? If only to fight fire with fire.
Think about it.
Without your aggression, would you have been able to do what it took to bring home the cure? Your dark side saved humanity.
At the cost of my own.
Tom, if you weren't who you are, none of us would be here right now.
MEYLAN: And that's if we can find him at all.
SLATTERY: Captain.
Based on Vellek's communication with Giorgio's mansion, and with the top speed of a Hydra class destroyer, this is now our area of uncertainty.
That's at least 250 nautical miles.
Even with the helo and the RHIB, we can't cover that much water.
Giorgio make contact with anyone besides the lab? - [BEEP.]
- Yes, sir.
He made at least a dozen calls to the same location over the past few weeks, on land.
Where? The island of Kleos.
Mean anything to you? Giorgio never mentioned it.
Kleos.
It was an ancient Lazaretto, a quarantine/prison during the Black Death.
The Italians reopened it at the height of the Red Flu to try to stop the spreading.
Obviously, no one survived.
Land of the dead.
Wonderful.
[INHALES DEEPLY.]
What's Vellek using it for? Traffic data suggests a relay station, probably to mask communications to and from his ship.
With Giorgio's mansion compromised, it may be the only way for Vellek to get secure comms.
We can tap into that satellite signal, use the communications log to find that ship.
You'd have to do it from the source, sir.
The island itself.
Kleos is about a hundred miles from our PIM.
We could be there in three hours.
That's away from our area of uncertainty.
If it doesn't work, we'll lose Vellek for good.
But if it does, we'll have a constant feed into his comms in real time.
We'll know exactly where he is.
Set course for Kleos.
Cooper, assemble a team.
This room's off-limits.
On whose orders? We are radio silent.
No calls in or out.
I need to speak with England, make arrangements for them to take possession of the cured seeds.
No need.
Those arrangements have already been made.
Well, if it's all the same with you, I'd like to hear that for myself.
Fine.
I'll take it up with Demetrius.
It will do you no good.
I'm in charge now.
[WEAPONS CLICKING, INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
[GUN COCKS.]
[KEYBOARD CLACKING, COMPUTER CHIRPING.]
Captain's in combat.
- RHIB is 15 mikes out, sir.
- Very well.
We do this right, Vellek will never even know we were there.
[KNOCK ON DOOR.]
Demetrius, are you in there? It's James Fletcher.
[KNOCKS ON DOOR.]
Demetrius, can I come in? I cannot let anyone inside.
[DOOR RATTLES.]
[LOWERED VOICE.]
Demetrius, let me in.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
What's happened to you? They did something to me.
Dr.
Vellek he drugged me.
Because you challenged him? And now you can't? Mind control.
Stand up.
Please don't do that.
[SLAP.]
That's it? You're not gonna hit me back? I just hit you in the face.
Demetrius, what's the Doctor's plan? Now that he's cured this Red Rust, what's What's this drug have to do with it? He promised me, Greece would eat.
No one would challenge us.
Because of the drug? I didn't know anything about the drug until now.
He said I was the first test case.
Now he knows it works.
Yes.
Demetrius, you were a proud man.
You were a ruler of people.
[EXHALES SHARPLY.]
He's taken that from you.
Doesn't that make you angry? I know I should be angry but I-I can't be.
I'd rather be dead.
Sit down.
If something were to happen to the Doctor's test case, he'd have to re-evaluate his science.
[CLICK.]
And that would buy me some time time I sorely need to get out of the mess I've created.
Don't worry, Demetrius.
You don't need to get angry.
[GRUNTS.]
Open.
Close.
Swallow.
[MUFFLED GRUNTING.]
[FEET SHUFFLE, CHAIR RATTLES.]
[GASPS, GRUNTING.]
I'll get angry for you.
[BREATHING HEAVILY.]
[DOOR OPENS.]
[DOOR CLOSES.]
[COUGHING.]
You okay, Master Chief? [WHISPERS.]
I'm fine.
[COUGHING.]
[HACKING COUGH.]
[PANTING.]
[CLEARS THROAT.]
I got eyes on target.
Cobra copies.
We're in position.
Tiger's on station.
We've got one hell of a welcoming party.
I hold sat dish at the southeast tower.
JETER: We'll find the comms room at the end of that cable.
Now we just gotta find a quiet way in.
Nathan James, Vulture Team.
We are on station, preparing to infiltrate target.
Copy that, Vulture Team.
TAO, give us a sitrep.
No sign of surface or air contacts, sir.
All quiet on our end, Vulture.
You are cleared to move in.
Copy that, Mother.
[BIRD CALLS.]
- [MEN SHOUTING IN DISTANCE.]
- Green.
[SHOUTING CONTINUES.]
Those look like fighters.
[MAN SHOUTS INDISTINCTLY.]
Those Giorgio's guys? This must be where he trains them.
Well, there's at least 40 of 'em.
Possibly armed.
So much for sneaking in the back door.
[MAN SHOUTS IN GREEK.]
So we go in through the front.
His fighters are from all over the region.
Who's gonna notice five more? Five? There are seven of us.
Looks like it's "boys only.
" All teams, rendezvous on my whiskey.
[MEN CONTINUE SHOUTING IN GREEK.]
[SHOUTING CONTINUES.]
Cooper, the fighters are approaching your position.
- [STATIC.]
- Copy that.
[MAN SHOUTS IN GREEK.]
[PANTING.]
[MAN SPEAKING IN GREEK.]
- Vulture is set.
- Roger.
- Showtime.
- [GUNSHOT.]
Ohh! [SHOUTING IN GREEK.]
Everyone, inside now! Come on! Inside! Go! [MEN SPEAKING IN GREEK.]
- [STATIC.]
- Nathan James, they're in.
Copy that.
[MEN SPEAKING GREEK.]
"Boys only.
" Aneurysm? Well, there's no sign of hemorrhaging.
Perhaps it's something genetic or chronic or pre-existing.
Pallor's normal.
Means death was sudden.
Heart attack? Could be a heart attack.
Autopsy will tell us that.
GIORGIO: Could it have something to do with the science, Dad? No, Giorgio, it could not have had anything to do with the science.
I could go down to the prison, pick up more fighters for you to experiment on.
It is too late for that, Giorgio.
And please do not discuss things that you do not understand.
Christos and I will get to the bottom of this.
Of course.
Why would you need either one of us when you have your golden child in here to help you? - You're an asshole, Giorgio.
- Perfect Christos.
Do not speak to your brother in that tone of voice.
You understand me? What do you wanna do in the meantime, Father? - Meantime? What are you talking about? - It's no use going to the drop site if you're not ready, especially with the Americans after us.
We need to change course, go somewhere else until you figure out what happened.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Nothing changes.
Do you hear me? Nothing.
We're not going to stop.
We're not gonna change course.
And we're not going to slow down.
I'm going to find out what killed this man.
And I can tell you right now it was not my science.
And I'm going to prove that.
[SAW BUZZING.]
[SHOUTING IN GREEK.]
[GRUNTS.]
MAN: Let's go! Did you see that? That guy could've crushed him.
[MEN SHOUTING IN GREEK.]
I'm pretty sure we just snuck into a prison.
- 40 prisoners, 6 guards, 9 guns.
- Come on.
Doesn't add up.
These aren't the fighters Vellek's going to experiment on.
[MEN SPEAKING GREEK.]
These are the ones he's already dosed.
They've got no fight in 'em.
That's about right.
I've seen Vellek's tapes.
So it means we gotta play nice if we want to blend in.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
What is it? I've seen that guy from the tapes.
[SPEAKS GREEK.]
His name is Ares.
He fought Captain Chandler.
Everyone inside! Maybe we should have a little chat with Ares, get some answers.
You read my mind.
Burk, Miller, get Master Chief to the comms room, - tap that satellite.
- Yes, sir.
We'll get you on the way out.
Good luck.
- DANNY: Good luck.
- MAN: Come on.
Move it.
- One more.
- Good.
No, no.
- Come on.
- No more.
Thank you.
[CHUCKLES.]
To our baby brother.
We're gonna miss you.
[INHALES SHARPLY.]
- [GLASSES CLINK.]
- Cheers.
- Thank you.
- Cheers.
[PIANO PLAYING JAZZ.]
So where are you even gonna live? I don't know yet.
They, uh, set you up with housing once you get there.
And it's well known the government always keeps its promises.
- Father, you swore no fighting.
- Not fighting, Lucia, darling.
Just, uh, stating the obvious.
I want Christos to be fully aware with whom he's climbing into bed.
I know you're upset, Dad, but not all government scientists are bad.
Not all are bad? I mean, you're talking about the people who shunned Dad, who betrayed him, who drove him out of his own country.
The proverbial repetition of history Mendel, Boltzmann, Copernicus all ostracized, all criticized for ideas that would later on change the world.
And they were all betrayed.
Look, I feel terrible about leaving when you need me, but this is something that I Hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on a second.
Is that what you think this is about? Me needing you? - Father.
- The kid grows up and disappoints his father.
That's a story as old as time.
But don't think for one second that I need you.
Christos [CHRISTOS SIGHS DEEPLY.]
Love you.
Take a look right under there.
Look at that tissue.
I have.
There's nothing going on.
But I will find out what killed this dude, I promise you.
You will? - Giorgio.
- What? - Is everything okay? - I don't know, man.
But we're still on schedule, right? For my seeds? Yes.
England will get their delivery as promised.
Good, because if there's a problem, if your father's doing something dangerous, we can deal with it.
We're in this together, you and I.
- Are we? - Of course.
No, I can't help you.
My old man he's gonna do what he's gonna do.
[GUN CLACKING.]
Danny and Wolf have gone off script.
They're still in the courtyard.
The rest of them made it inside.
And it looks as though Green has found a new friend.
Ares.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
Who are you? A friend of Tom Chandler.
I think you know him as Hercules.
Hercules.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS CONTINUE.]
Is he like me now? No.
He got out in time.
Good.
That's good.
Hey, what's going on in here? [SPEAKING GREEK.]
What, you don't speak Greek? I said move! I'm going.
Got to get inside, tough guy.
Got to eat your lunch so you can stay big and strong! [SPEAKING GREEK.]
You're not supposed to be here.
I'm going to the cafeteria.
Then you're not even on the right floor, idiot.
Come on.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
[SWITCH CLICKS, WHIRRING.]
Nathan James, Vulture, this is Cobra.
We've made it into the control room.
Copy that, Cobra.
We hear you loud and clear.
- Standing by for uplink.
- BURK: Roger.
Will advise.
How long will it take to tap into the satellite signal? Depends on the level of encryption.
I'd say around 20 minutes.
Once we uplink, the ship can start processing the communications log.
- But first, we gotta find that satellite.
- [COMPUTER CHIRPING.]
Why are you following me? Because I have questions, Ares.
The drugs they're giving you, how long do they last? I don't know.
I can't fight.
I want to, but I can't.
On your feet, animal.
[MEN SPEAKING GREEK.]
I don't know how I missed you, the biggest guy in the room.
I bet everyone was afraid of you, huh? Look at tough guy now.
Just big dumb animal.
Am I wrong? - [ELECTRICITY ZAPS.]
- Aah! [GRUNTS.]
[GROANS.]
[INHALING SHARPLY.]
- Does it hurt? - [GRUNTS.]
Do you want to hit me? Get up.
Up.
Come on! [BREATHING DEEPLY.]
- Again.
- [CONTINUES BREATHING DEEPLY.]
I want to see how angry you can get.
Where should I hit you next? Here or here? Here.
[SPEAKING GREEK.]
[SPEAKS GREEK.]
A man shouldn't drink alone.
You get used to it.
You know you're gonna be a hero in England, right? Oh, goodie.
Just what I've always wanted.
I can guarantee you, I won't be the one taking the bows.
That's for the old man.
Il maestro.
Doesn't seem fair, does it? You do all the dirty work, and your dad gets all the glory.
My dad likes to say, "Not only is life not fair, "no one ever promised it would be.
You make your own fate.
" Well, I hope he appreciates what you've done.
[GLASSES CLINK.]
He's not thinking that clearly right now.
Of course.
He's got a lot on his plate.
Curing the Red Rust, abolishing world hunger mind control.
Who said anything about mind control? You did.
Did I? No.
The mind stays the same.
It's the behavior that changes.
That's what makes the torture that much greater.
Imagine knowing what you want [HUFFS.]
and not being able to fight for it.
Well Giorgio, listen to me.
Your father's already proven he can cure the world of Red Rust.
He can feed everyone.
Talk about a more perfect world.
That's a legacy.
But if he's got other designs, dangerous designs, then he goes from a hero to a monster like that.
If you really want to protect him and his legacy, protect him from himself.
Good talk, 007.
Found it.
[SHOUTS IN GREEK, GRUNTS.]
[GRUNTING.]
[BONES CRUNCH.]
I don't think you need to do that.
You know I could hurt you.
Yes.
Right.
So you're gonna get the hell outta here and you're gonna keep your mouth shut, or I promise, I will hurt you.
[CHIRPING.]
Nathan James, we've cracked the satellite signal.
Sending you its ID and coordinates for uplink.
We're on it, Cobra.
Stand by for confirmation.
I see no sign of hemorrhage.
I see no sign of genetic deficiency.
We've done the blood tests.
Have to start on the heart.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
What do you want, Giorgio? We're working.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
What do you want? [EXHALES DEEPLY.]
I was thinking you cured the Red Rust.
Why don't we go home for a little while, until things cool off? Then you can ship out the product.
The world can wait.
Are you suggesting that we just give up, Giorgio? Is that what you're doing? Because if you're suggesting that we just give up, why don't you have the balls to say exactly what you mean? Dad, it's not giving up.
- It is a safe move.
- [SCALPEL THUDS.]
You know, Giorgio, you leave me speechless.
- And now compound your innate ignorance - [INHALES SHARPLY.]
with weakness.
I have no words for what you are.
Get out.
Let's go back to work, Christos.
[INHALES SHARPLY.]
How often are you injected? Only once.
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
[TRAYS CLATTER.]
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS CONTINUE.]
Ares, if they only injected you once, how are they keeping all of you like this? Ares, is the drug in the food? No.
The drug is the food.
[MAN SPEAKS GREEK.]
[TRAYS CLATTER.]
[UTENSILS CLINKING.]
You again.
It's not that big a ship.
It's not that small either.
I can't fight my father.
He's too strong.
No, Giorgio, you're not fighting him.
You're protecting him.
[MEN SPEAKING GREEK.]
What would I have to do? Just let me call England.
They'll send scientists to safeguard the cure.
We'll take your father in, get him the help that he needs, that he deserves.
He'll still be known as the man that fed the world.
It's too late.
We're almost to Malta.
- Malta? What - You can't stop him.
What's Malta? Is that is that the drop site, Giorgio? - What's the plan? - Look, man, don't worry about it, okay? A deal's a deal.
My old man will get your people the cure, as promised.
The rest is What? Giorgio, what's the rest? World domination? Turning your enemies into sheep? You don't understand him.
No one does.
That's 'cause he's insane.
Let me help you.
It doesn't have to play out like this.
I'm starting to dislike you, Commander.
[COMPUTER CHIRPS.]
Sir, we have decryption.
- The ship's coordinates.
- Yes, sir.
And the older ones match those from Giorgio's mansion.
Gotcha, asshole.
Cobra, we have confirmation.
- Copy that.
- [SWITCH CLICKS.]
All right.
Nice work, Master Chief.
Let's get the hell out of here.
[MAN SPEAKING GREEK.]
Hey, tough guy.
What's wrong? You don't like bread? You don't like rice? Everyone likes rice.
Eat.
Now.
Stand up.
Stand up! [MEN SPEAKING GREEK.]
Hey! [SPEAKS GREEK.]
[GRUNTING.]
- [CRUNCH.]
- [GRUNTS.]
[LABORED BREATHING.]
- We gotta go.
Can you walk? - [COUGHING.]
I said, eat! [ALARM BLARING.]
That doesn't sound good.
[ALARM CONTINUES BLARING.]
[GRUNTING.]
Who's the tough guy now, vlaka? Ares, come on.
- [ELECTRICITY ZAPS.]
- Aah! [GRUNTS.]
[GRUNTING.]
[TRAY CLANGS AND CLATTERS.]
- [MAN SHOUTS IN GREEK.]
- Hey! Come on! You can be free! [MAN SHOUTS IN GREEK.]
Tell Hercules to keep fighting.
[GUNSHOTS.]
[THUD.]
- [STATIC.]
- Nathan James, we're blown.
Request immediate extract.
Copy that, Vulture.
Sunshine's heading your way.
[MEN SHOUTING IN GREEK.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
- DANNY: Is he hit? - No, but he's hurt.
[ALARM CONTINUES BLARING.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
[MEN SHOUT IN GREEK.]
[GUNFIRE.]
- Uhh! - [GUNFIRE CONTINUES.]
[MEN SHOUTING IN GREEK.]
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS IN DISTANCE.]
Mate, I need to use that radio.
I already told you, you're not allowed.
[GRUNTING.]
- [GRUNTS.]
- [BONES CRUNCH, BODY THUDS.]
So Vellek isn't just injecting the fighters with Nostos, he's baking it right into their food.
It appears so, sir.
So that's why he wanted the seeds.
He cures the Red Rust, mixes in the Nostos to create food that'll pacify his enemies.
It's the perfect weapon.
People eating it won't even know.
Well, even if they did, what choice would they have? - They either eat it or starve.
- Jesus.
Your work paid off.
We narrowed down our search area.
But now Vellek knows we're coming.
He always knew.
Sir, we're getting an incoming transmission.
- Broadcast the call.
- Aye, sir.
I say again, Nathan James, this is Commander James Fletcher.
- You were right - Can we triangulate that signal? No, sir.
It's coming from satellite untraceable.
A biological weapon, something to do with behavior control.
I'm not sure exactly how he's planning on using it, but we're in a warship headed to Malta.
I say again, we're headed to Malta.
You must stop him.
You're the only ones who can.
I know this doesn't make things right.
You must believe me, I only did this to serve my country.
Sasha, I'm so sorry I hurt you.
I hope even if you don't forgive me, that you'll understand.
I never meant to hurt [STATIC HISSING.]
What happened? [CLICK.]
Come on.
We lost the signal.
Malta.
That sounds about right.
[DOOR OPENS.]
- Giorgio - Who were you talking to? - I know you have your doubts - [DOOR CLOSES.]
but we have to do something.
We have to stop your father.
He's gone mad.
We can make things right.
Does anyone else know you're here? Did you get through to anyone? No.
I couldn't get a signal.
Okay.
Okay.
Just hang on.
[DOOR OPENS.]
[SIGHS.]
You really think you could turn my own son against me, man? Huh? You don't get it.
We're family.
Whatever the crap between us, his blood is my blood.
And you're a punk, Fletcher.
A con man.
Matter of fact, a two-bit con man.
I found this buried deep in the tissue in the esophagus of Demetrius.
Your little poison pill.
I mean, who in the hell do you think you're dealing with here, Fletcher?! My science was perfect! My mind's like a knife! You can't play me.
[SIGHS DEEPLY.]
I'm just so disappointed in you.
I invited you on my ship.
I feed you.
I was gonna feed your entire country.
[LAUGHING.]
[CONTINUES LAUGHING.]
You're a lunatic.
No, no, no, Fletcher.
A lunatic is the mind that refuses to evolve.
Lunacy is this world, here and now, doing the same thing over and over, going down the same street, falling in the same manhole, and expecting different results.
The sad cycle of failure.
But I'm gonna change all that.
I'll ask you one more time.
Who did you call? It doesn't matter, son.
They're not gonna stop us now.
So now what? Are you gonna kill me? No, man.
I don't kill you.
I abhor violence.
[SIGHS.]
Giorgio, listen.
I understand why you told him.
I do.
But we can fix this.
You and me together, we can make things right [GUNSHOT.]
[WAVES CRASHING.]
The guy who caused all our problems may have just solved them.
Or maybe this is another trick.
Either way, we'll handle it.
But my guess is you were always right about him.
Well, if that's the truth, it probably cost him his life.
[POT THUDS.]
[MUFFLED SHOUTING.]
[GRUNTS.]
- [EXHALES.]
- [GLASSES CLATTER.]
[SIGHS.]
[SIGHS HEAVILY.]
Hey, Dad.
Christos, I was worried about you.
What are you worried about? The Nostos blended seamlessly with the Red Rust cure.
No need for injections.
- One plant now contains it all.
- Huh.
- You really did it.
- I did it, didn't I? It's gonna be a bumper crop.
The secret was in just one base pair on the fourth DNA strand of Elaeis virilis, our beautiful palm seed.
Come and look at it.
It's magnificent.
- Come on, come on.
- [CHUCKLES.]
- [SIGHS.]
- Okay, it's just one - one switch, A to G.
- [WHISPERS.]
Whoa.
No, look, look, look, look.
It's one switch, A to G, on that one base pair.
That's it.
That's it.
Nothing more complicated than that.
But I-I-I-I'm making it so complicated.
I mean, I can't believe I'm making it so complicated.
It's like a schoolboy could have figured this out.
And yet it got by me.
It got by you.
It's magnificent.
Semplice.
[SPEAKS ITALIAN.]
You are the most magnificent son.
Love you.
Love you, love you, love you, love you more than olives, and I really love olives.
Let me look.
God.
It's magnificent, huh?
