The Long Road Home (2017) s01e03 Episode Script

Into the Unknown

1 NARRATOR: Previously on The Long Road Home.
EDDIE: Ambush! SHANE: Son of a bitch! ERIC: Everybody remount! Chen.
(INAUDIBLE).
Hey, hey! BEN: Freeze! LUPITA: We just heard something happened in Sadr City.
LEANN: It is just a peacekeeping mission.
GINA: LeAnn, what if something did happen? Sgt.
Chen is dead, sir.
This was a well-planned ambush.
Somebody tipped the enemy off to our movements.
And it's usually the interpreters.
DYLAN: This is city-wide, sir.
There's no one else right now.
Just us.
TROY: I sent them to the Sadr Bureau.
GARY: You let that go, brother.
Let me lead Rescue 1, they're my guys.
I'll take Rescue 2.
I'll be 15 minutes behind you.
We'll get them home, brother.
I'm sorry, brother.
(BABY CRYING) - Maybe he's still hungry.
- He's not.
Are you packing your uniform or wearing it? Uh, wearing one, packing, too.
- Hey, shh, shh, shh.
- What am I forgetting? Um, my music? I put it all on your iPod.
Maybe he has colic.
- What is colic, anyway? - Nobody knows.
How long has he been crying? Shh, shh, shh, shh.
I don't know.
I think if it's longer than three hours, it might be colic.
Oh, you need warm socks.
Weather Channel says it can down to the low 50s in the desert at night.
Warm socks.
Any of you guys been there before? Uh, one or two.
Desert Storm, no action.
At least you've all been working and training together.
Shh, shh, shh.
But they're not the ones in charge.
- Okay, okay.
- I am, - no warm socks.
- Oh, you know what? Here take him.
They must be in the dryer.
Oh, okay.
You okay? Yeah, it's just the stitches still pinching a little bit.
Timing of this really sucks.
Hey, don't worry about us.
We're gonna be fine.
Just worry about yourself, okay? You know, in the ancient times, when men went to war, their wives went with them.
- Oh, yeah? I'll go.
- Uh-hmm.
- Oh, yeah? - Yeah, if I'm the one in charge.
Will that be any different from now? I'll get your socks.
Oh, my God, he's really looking at you.
He really is, isn't he? Yeah, that's not supposed to happen for another six weeks.
But of course, he's the smartest most beautiful boy in the whole wide world just like his daddy.
I'm gonna miss so much in a year.
I wouldn't get to see his first smile or any of that.
Oh, God, don't you start because if you start, I'll start.
We're gonna be a mess.
(BABY FLATULENCE) Oh.
Oh, okay.
At least we know it's not colic yet.
Uh, no, no, I'll do it, I'll do it.
Gives me a chance to collect one of those memories I'm gonna miss.
Hey, buddy, hi.
Daddy's on poop duty.
(BABY CRYING) Oh, it's all right.
It's all right now.
It's all right.
Gorgonzola.
- Thank you.
- Let me put him down.
All this going on and he's still asleep.
Yeah, it's because he didn't sleep last night.
You think he looks like me or Gina? I think all babies look like hairless cats.
- They do not, Dex.
- How's the little guy? You think he looks like me or Troy? Oh, God.
Thank God he looks like you.
- Hey, you know Dexter Jordan? - Yeah, of course.
Heard you won't be joining us in the sand box.
Wish I was.
Jordan's our new Rear Detachment Commander.
Yeah, Aimee told me.
She signed up for Care Team rotation on base.
- Gina, too.
- Uh-hmm.
Hey, you mind if I steal your husband for a sec? No way, you get him for a full year.
I only have a few more minutes with him.
Come here.
You and I should talk FRG plans for a couple of minutes.
Well, I guess if you're all ganging up on me.
Okay, but bring him back.
- You got it.
- And soon.
Well, you got a handle on all this yet? How's my game face? Like Custer at his Last Stand.
Two columns on the way to reinforce him, why the hell didn't he wait? Standing orders.
Assault through the ambush.
Yeah, maybe he didn't want his men to see him hesitate.
First thing you learn in Ranger School, doubt leads to indecision.
- Leads to breakdown in morale.
- It's a slippery slope.
Amen.
Just remember, you can only fight one war at a time.
You know, Troy and I haven't been apart longer than two weeks since we've been married? All this must feel really unfair.
Right now, I'm just kind of numb.
How are you feeling working with the Family Readiness Group? Okay.
Sometimes I feel like all these social events sort of keep us from thinking about what's really on our minds.
Take care over there.
We'll talk soon.
Uh-hmm, hey, Dexter, can you just run over his foot with your car or something? Nothing too serious, just so he doesn't have to go.
Battalion, mount up! All units board to transport.
Okay, this is happening.
How are we gonna do this? Okay well, first I'm gonna give you the best kiss of your life.
You've given me lots of those.
But this one will be really awesome.
It better.
And then what? Then we both walk away and we don't look back.
- I don't think I can do that.
- Me, either.
(BABY CRYING) I love you, Merrick.
Okay, well - I love you.
- I love you.
See you, gorgeous.
CLAY: Anyone miss being in one of those things? I don't.
Hot as hell.
SETH: I miss the awesome sound system.
Captain got ours wired up for heavy metal and they stick us in these damn Humvees, right, sir? I can't see a damn thing past him! I can't see shit, either, sir.
We need real eyes on the situations.
Pull around the Bradleys.
They'll need to cover us from the rear.
Yes, sir.
Comanche White Four and White Five, this is Comanche Six, we're moving to the head of the convoy, over.
SOLDIER (OVER RADIO): Roger, Comanche Six.
They're all leaving.
MAN (OVER INTERCOM): All Warrior Blues report to the staging area.
I'll say again, all Warrior Blues report to the staging area.
ROBERT: I don't understand.
Where is she? ISRAEL: Just call her when we get back.
What if we don't get back? What are you talking about, man? You're good, all right? Just stay close to me.
Maybe she's been in an accident.
Dude.
Oh, hey, I don't know, maybe she's just out partying, all right? Okay, I can't listen to this.
See you guys on the truck.
Don't pay attention to that fool, come on.
He don't get it because he don't know Tracie.
He don't get what we have.
My whole life I've been trying to find a woman like her.
Finally I did.
As soon as I'm back, we're having kids.
Ain't nothing better than being a dad.
Lancer Two, Comanche Six, Rescue 1 has crossed Alpha on Copper.
Some smoke in the air, but negative enemy contact, over.
Lancer Two, solid copy.
Will advise Lancer Six, over.
Col.
Volesky still in the staging area? Yes sir, he's on with the Red Platoon.
Copy.
Red One, how are you holding out, brother, over? Lancer Six, enemy seems to have backed off a bit, but they just burned our abandoned Victors on Delta, over.
Can they still be used as a landmark, over? I hope so.
Lancer Six, my inventory says we spent about a third of our combat load on the initial ambush.
If the enemy comes back in full force, we will not be able to hold them off for long.
Any sense of a rescue ETA, over? I'd say at most 30 minutes.
Red One, we still need your exact location in the maze.
Can you signal an extraction point, over? We'll figure something out, over.
Lancer Six out.
All right, any ideas? Flares, sir? That'll work.
You think it's Chen's? What should I do with it? He wouldn't want it to go to waste.
Well then, take it then, Sergeant.
- Hey, I didn't mean it like that.
- Enough, cover your sectors.
Coleman, any luck? Negative sir, I ain't got shit.
All right, maybe someone on the roof grabbed them.
JACKSON: Where the hell are these hostiles? Where's our QRF? You know we have to pay them for collateral damage? Humvee ran over this Iraqi kid.
Family got, like, two grand.
How do they put a value on that? Two grand for a kid What's a grandma go for? Probably not much.
A couple hundred? I got a feeling payday's over.
JONATHAN: Well, we're still paying.
Just not with cash.
Hey, I'm sick of hearing about it! How we screwed this up or the bad shit that we've done.
Just shut the fuck up already! Jesus, Jackson.
Chillax, dude.
What do you think, Jassim? JASSIM: It's not for me to say.
You must feel some kind of way about it.
Go on, man, you can say it.
It's a free country, now.
Say it.
I work for you, do I not? Jassim, I thought I told you to stay downstairs with the family.
- Sorry, yes, I'll go.
- Come on.
Listen up.
Rescue's on its way, it shouldn't be much longer.
Thank God.
We need a way to signal them, all right.
When we stripped the Humvees, did anybody grab a flare pack? Oh, oh, I did, sir.
Hey, I, I'm, I know I got one.
Shit, I can't find it.
I must have dropped it.
Yeah, you rained that shit all over the street.
Riddell, do you know where it is? You're with me.
Okay.
Sergeant, what did I tell you about Jassim? - I'm clear on it, sir.
- Are you sure? Yes, sir.
Sgt.
Bourquin is in charge.
Riddell, come on, let's head.
- Smoke's getting heavier.
- We must be getting closer.
Three more blocks to Delta, sir.
Burning debris ahead.
All Comanche Whites, Comanche Six.
Debris ahead, reduce speed.
Stand ready for contact, over.
Anyone got a visual on the rest of the convoy? Weibley! Hostiles? - No, sir.
- Negative.
That's Route Bravo.
We can go that way.
Sir, that's exactly what the enemy wants us to do.
Why the hell else would they block the road? It's a trap.
We go back around, we lose an hour.
What do you wanna do, Captain? Sir, we have to proceed.
Back and around, right, Captain? We have visual on convoy, Captain.
Lancer Six, this is Comanche Six.
Comanche Six, do you suspect a trap, over? Bravo is a long way around, could just be a delaying tactic, over.
Comanche Six, it doesn't sound like you have a choice.
Is that your assessment, over? Brother Denomy, is that your assessment, over? Roger.
That's my assessment, over.
I agree, take Route Bravo.
You make contact, assault through.
We'll follow the same corridor in, over.
Roger that, over.
All Comanche Whites, Comanche Six.
Follow us on to Bravo, over.
(SPEAKING IN ARABIC).
(SPEAKING IN ARABIC).
All Warrior Elements, listen up.
I know a lot of these vehicles still do not have radios, so I need you to maintain visual contact with the convoy at all times once we're in the city.
Now we will follow Captain Denomy's corridor in, make a route adjustment at Bravo.
Once we are near that target area, you be ready to cordon on my order.
Gentlemen, at all times, be aware.
This is a skilled and highly-prepared enemy who has coordinated a city-wide attack.
They've successfully pinned down one of our platoons and repelled a force of four Abrams tanks.
So I say let's be ready for anything.
Shoot them in the face! (INAUDIBLE).
AHMED: You scared, Sgt.
Butler? Hell no, I ain't scared.
You scared, Cason? Hell, no.
ROBERT: Give me my helmet.
I was starting to get worried.
Everybody on board? Yeah, still got no radios, though.
Come on, we're Oscar Mike.
I'll, uh, ride in the back with men.
Don't mess around, get in.
No, I'm good, thanks, Miranda.
Hey, I ain't nervous either, man.
I grew up in Juarez.
I'll ride with you guys.
No more room up front, Sergeant? Somebody's got to keep you fools alive.
Hey, I thought we were just running security.
That's the plan, man.
You know, PFC Young, I know what it's like to be in a war zone.
But I pray to God we don't find one tonight.
Moving out! Nothing yet, huh? ALEX: Nope.
- You wanna email Daddy? - Can I? Okay, what do you wanna say? Say I miss him very much and I love him very, very much, and I want him to be very, very, very careful.
- Very careful.
- Put what I said.
- I am.
- But just like I said.
- I did.
- No, you didn't.
When did you learn how to read? - I can't read.
- I know.
I want to send it now, now, now.
Put your finger on that key, give it a press.
You just sent it all the way to Iraq.
(CELL PHONE RINGING) Leann Volesky.
Hey, Dexter.
Oh, no.
Can they get them out? No, I understand.
Yes, yes, I will.
(DOORBELL) DYLAN (OVER RADIO): What's your present position, over? TROY: Still on Bravo.
Slowed down by a shit-ton of debris.
We just crossed Route Delaware, so I estimate two klicks to the target area.
Any update on the tanks, over? The Crusaders still need to complete CASEVAC and rearm, so you guys remain the spearhead.
Stay alert.
Lancer Six and Rescue Two are inbound, over.
GINA: I'm sorry, Leann, it is such a mess in here.
- No, no.
- Coffee? Please, Dexter Jordan just found out that a platoon's been attacked.
There's one fatality in the unit.
No, no, no, no, not Troy, not Troy or Gary.
The casualty's below the rank of Captain.
Okay.
That's all that Dexter could tell me until the next of kin are notified.
Is the platoon safe? Not yet, um, they've launched a rescue.
That means Troy will be involved.
Gary, too.
Dexter said he will, um, he'll call and let us know when we it's time to start readying the Care Teams.
Uh-hmm, yeah, I have, um, I have the list right here.
God how am I gonna do this, Leann, comfort the families and help them? I can't.
I'm sorry, um, oh God, I'm having a meltdown, I'm not normally like this.
You just had a baby, Gina, and surgery, it's okay.
It's okay, don't you beat yourself up.
Come on now.
Maybe I shouldn't have volunteered.
I felt like I had to, because of Troy's rank.
That sounds so selfish.
- Not at all.
- Thank you.
You know why I volunteered, originally? It was just to stay sane while Gary was away.
Over the years, I've counseled families through divorce, and depression, and drugs, but never anything like this.
So we're both in it for the first time.
I would say that is comforting but it really isn't.
Everyone says, "You're the other woman when you marry a soldier.
You got to accept that he's really married to the Army.
" But it was never like that with us.
Troy know how you felt about volunteering? He really thought the fighting was over.
We all did.
So, listen, guys, oh, shit.
Lancer Two, Comanche Six, we're about to have contact.
Shit! (GUNFIRE) (GUNFIRE) All Comanche Whites, Comanche Six, we have contact, assault through the ambush, over.
(GUNFIRE) DENOMY (OVER RADIO): Lancer Two, Comanche Six, Rescue 1 is in contact.
Repeat, Rescue 1 is in contact, over.
Copy, Comanche Six.
Lancer Six's current position? Nearing entry into the city.
Last known location is Route Aeros near Silver.
- Advise him of contact.
- Yes, sir.
(DISTANT EXPLOSIONS) SHANE: That's got to be our rescue team.
Cover me.
Go.
(GAGGING) Jesus Christ, they're fucking babies, shit.
JONATHAN: God, it's messed up.
Almost the same age as mine.
I'm never having kids, not after this.
How could I bring kids into a world where this, this shit happens all the time, huh? Shit.
(SPEAKING IN ARABIC).
(SPEAKING IN ARABIC).
We didn't do this.
This was not us, okay? We did not do this.
Okay? Riddell, she doesn't understand a word you're saying.
Not us, this is not us.
Your own, your own people.
All right, we got to go, come on.
(SPEAKING IN ARABIC).
It should be over here, sir.
Right there.
Get to it, go.
Okay, sir (DISTANT EXPLOSIONS) - you hear that? - Focus up, Riddell.
We need those flares, time now, come on.
Yeah, yeah, all right.
Oh God sir, oh my God.
Oh, I swear I saw them fall right here.
- You got them? - Yeah.
Fantastic, come on, let's get the hell out of here.
(SPEAKING IN ARABIC).
DERRICK: Sergeant B.
Sorry, he's asking if the women can eat.
They're hungry, they didn't No, no one moves.
Let them eat.
But the men stay tied up.
(GUNFIRE) All Comanche Whites, keep punching through, over.
Why aren't the Bradleys firing? White Four and Five, Comanche Six, go hot on the main guns, target the enemy positions at 11:00 and 1:00.
Comanche Six, this is White Four.
We cannot identify targets.
We do not have a line of sight, over.
SOLDIER (OVER RADIO): Comanche Six, this is White Five.
Same deal, cannot risk fire without blue on blue, over.
(PAINFUL GRUNT) I fear no evil, fort thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
I fear no evil, movement.
BEN: I don't see anything.
Cease fire.
Congratulations, you killed the laundry.
That's not funny.
A third of our ammo is gone.
We have no idea how long we'll be up here.
Rescue has to get here, right? Yeah, and we were on a routine shit sucking mission and now look at us.
Hey, watch what you shoot.
STEPHEN: Sir, did you hear the good news? I won't have to worry about putting the toilet seat down all the time anymore! I got word from Leslie last night, we're having a boy.
GARY: All Warrior Elements, Lancer Six, we are approaching city proper.
Everyone be on alert, over.
(DISTANT EXPLOSIONS, GUNFIRE) You doing all right? Listen up.
You all hear the fighting ahead.
As I said before, you got one job, cover your sector.
Confirm your target and fire and do it again.
No matter what happens, you don't turn, you cover your sector.
Oh, yeah, I seen that; I seen that look.
New blood about to pop his first cap.
You into this, huh? - It's not like that.
- Oh, yeah? What's it like? We all got this warrior muscle, right? We've been training it, we've been perfecting it.
This is our chance to use it, use it righteous.
That's what it's meant for.
- That's some deep shit, homie.
- Young's an idealist.
Yeah, bro, you're an idealist.
Maybe, what's wrong with that? I just ain't never tried it.
Come on, man.
Hey, what did I say earlier? If I see it again, I'm gonna throw over the side, you understand? Yes, Staff Sergeant.
If you wanna survive, you'll maintain situational awareness at all times.
All right, get these seats up, asses on the ground.
Security out, pick up your sectors.
(GUNFIRE, EXPLOSIONS) That's Bravo, sir.
How are we supposed to turn? GARY: All Warrior Elements, this is Lancer Six, be advised that Route Bravo is blocked.
Proceed down Copper and be ready for contact, over.
Proceed straight.
Roger, sir.
No, no, no, no, no, don't do that.
- What is it, Hayhurst? - I got a kid with an AK.
Put the gun down kid.
Don't do it.
No, damn it.
What happened? (SCREAMS) Don't do it, come on, don't.
We got the flares.
You got to be kidding me, again? (GUNSHOT) I just killed three generations of one family.
Sergeant B, we got the flares, we got to set them up.
Where's the LT? He's on the radio.
Captain Denomy's convoy's been ambushed, they're stuck in the shit.
What about the other convoy? Unknown.
Who else we even got left at War Eagle? CHAPLAIN: Not very much, is it? I don't know what I expected but not this one.
Father Pena.
- David Mathias.
- Nice to meet you.
Please don't tell me we're it.
No, doctors from the outgoing battalion are returning to help.
Where do you keep the blood supply? Well, there isn't one.
- What? - And very limited power.
Everything's still under construction.
- You're kidding me.
- I wish I was.
Well, without a blood supply, we can't do intensive surgeries, all we can hope is to stabilize for medevac.
Right, we can set up initial triage here, overflow in this area here.
Soldier, I need you to get whatever Humvees are left, circle this area here, okay? We're gonna need those headlights.
- Yes, sir.
- You've done this before.
I'm a pediatrician and up until a couple of days ago I was looking after the soldiers' children.
God bless you, doc.
(GUNFIRE) - Step on it, Weibley! - I'm trying, sir! (SCREAMING) - I'm okay - Can you shoot, God dammit, can you shoot? Yes, get us out of here! The hell's it look I'm doing, sir? Assault through, that's the damn order.
It's wrong.
It's the wrong choice.
We have to abort and regroup.
Sir! TROY: Everyone okay? - Yes, sir.
- Yes, yeah.
(ENGINE STALLS) It's dead, sir.
Okay, I need everyone to Are you sure I can't help? The more I move around the quicker I heal, thank you.
At first they said, "You're already five centimeters.
" So we think the baby's coming soon but then everything just stopped.
Before I know it they cut me open.
The worse part about it was I didn't get to see him for what felt like an eternity, that everything was just still.
- Are you all right, sir? - I'm okay.
Get your weapon and light the shitheads up.
Do it.
White Four, Comanche Six, White Four, come in! White Four, do you copy? Shit.
SOLDIER (OVER RADIO): Comanche Six, White Four, over.
White Four, we are down, we're abandoning the vehicle, I need you at our position now, Comanche Six out.
I can't drink any more coffee.
I'm gonna make us some tea.
Sounds good.
You know that whatever Dexter Jordan tells us, we can't share it until formal notifications have been made to the next of kin.
What about the other members in the FRG? Can we tell them? No, and they're gonna be asking.
So get ready for that.
You know, before he left, Troy's at an ancient times wives went to war with their husbands.
I guess we still do that in a way.
(CELL PHONE RINGS) This is Gina, uh-hmm, she's right here, we've been waiting for your call.
And Troy and Gary? Okay, we'll get started.
Dex says there's a serious combat going on in Sadr City.
As far as he knows, Troy and Gary are still okay but it's pretty bad and it's gonna get worse.
They are expecting casualties so we need to get our Care Teams together.
Okay, okay, let's split up that list and start making calls.
Let's go, everyone out now.
Weibley, if you don't move your ass I'll leave you right here.
Weibley.
I'm sorry, sir.
(GUNFIRE) We got to move, let's move this way.
(EXPLOSION) (GUNFIRE) Thank you, sir.
(GUNFIRE) Fuck, hey, hey, I'm on fire, I'm on fire.
I'm good, I'm good.
(GUNFIRE) - I'm hit.
- Cason! (GUNFIRE) Hiller.
Keep going.
(PAINFUL SCREAMS) (GUNSHOT) (MUSIC PLAYS THROUGH CREDITS)
