The Long Road Home (2017) s01e04 Episode Script

In the Valley of Death

1 Previously on The Long Road Home We take 2 convoys in: Rescue 1 will make contact with the platoon and extract.
I'll take Rescue 2, I'll be 15 minutes behind you.
Come on, we're Oscar-Mike.
MILTENBERGER: I'll, uh, ride in the back with the men.
Oh, don't mess around, get in.
No, I'm good.
Thanks, Miranda.
LEANN: Apparently, there's some chatter about an attack going on in Sadr City.
He'll be fine, they will all be fine.
LUPITA: How can you know? SHANE: Lancer 6, we spent about a third of our combat load on the initial ambush.
If the enemy comes back, we will not be able to hold them off for long.
TROY: Lancer 2, Comanche 6, we're about to have contact.
Taylor.
I have a rendezvous with Death at some disputed barricade.
When spring comes back with rustling shade and apple-blossoms fill the air, I have a rendezvous with Death.
When spring brings back blue days and fair.
Custom-molded? Uh, you're making that up, Corporal.
Well, almost all parts in Soviet-made anti-aircraft guns until the '70's.
And get this: nothing was standard so each of these fit only the gun for which it was made.
The factories only made a set number of parts.
You ran out, you ran out.
Now this stuff is just rustin' junk all over Eastern Europe.
The Russians supposed to be telling us that? Well, I guess no more than we're supposed to be out there drinking with them.
Uh, so wait.
What would have happened if the Russians would have run out of parts during the actual war? I guess they would have surrendered.
Corporal, we should have known about this years ago.
(SIGHS).
Man, it is peaceful here.
Man, it's hard to believe anybody would wanna kill people when it's so peaceful.
Uh well, they did, no one even knows how many.
Now the survivors can't stop murdering the perps.
I say let the people get their payback.
- I mean, why not? - Because when does that end? When everyone here's dead? It sure saves us a trip.
Oh, come on, man, you're too young to be that cynical.
You see that flag on your shoulder? You know what that means to the people here? It means for the first time in a long time, they can walk outside and see a soldier not be afraid.
That their kids can sleep safely at night.
That for the first time since the war, the world makes sense again.
There's a future.
You're a true believer, Corporal.
Corporal! Bogey approaching.
Oh, you know the drill, just tell them to turn around, there's no vehicles through here.
It's a woman.
Ma'am , this road's closed.
Ma'am, you speak English? There's no passage through here.
It's dangerous, you got to turn back.
Get an interpreter on the horn.
Everyone relax.
Corporal.
Ma'am, you need help are you hurt? Ma'am, what's wrong? What's she carrying? (THUNDER) (INAUDIBLE MUMBLING).
BELINDA: Robert, you were dreaming.
Yeah, it's all right, it's all right.
Was it the same dream, was it her? Go back to sleep Bel, I'm fine.
God knows 'twere better to be deep.
Pillowed in silk and scented down, where love throbs out in blissful sleep.
But I've a rendezvous with Death at midnight in some flaming town.
When Spring trips north again this year.
Please, just talk to me.
Nothing left to say, all right? I've said everything, okay? I'm sorry, I'm sorry, here.
- I don't need that.
Don't need that.
- Come on, I need to know I need to know you're safe, please.
I don't wanna fight, okay? I wanna remember your face like this.
It's not fair.
All the plans we made.
I love you, Robert, but this, I can't, I can't.
Yes, you can.
I love you, Belinda forever.
That our convoy or Rescue 1 in contact? Probably both, just cover your sector.
(DISTANT GUNFIRE) - Fire's heavy, get ready.
- I got a bad feeling, man.
ISRAEL: Just stay close.
You'll be all right, man.
RAFAEL: Here we go, my mans, right into the shit.
We need to move him.
Hiller, get him off that seat so we can get this vehicle going or the whole convoy's gonna get trapped.
Yes, sir.
All Warrior Elements, this is Lancer 6: abort your approach, Route Copper is blocked.
I repeat, abort your approach.
(GUNFIRE) REGINALD: The hell? All Warrior Blues, Blue 5, why are we stopping? We're in a kill zone, over.
AHMED: Sergeant, there's a vehicle down at the head of the convoy.
- Get us around.
- Yes, sir.
(GUNFIRE) (PAINFUL GRUNT) How you doin', Spicer? CLAY: Me? You're the one that's all messed up.
SETH: We can't hold them off much longer, sir.
(GUNFIRE) (EXPLOSION) Let's go, let's go, let's move.
Let's go, what the! There you go, come on Gumby.
Sir, you're wounded.
It's fine, Lieutenant, Spicer patched me up.
All Comanche Whites, Comanche Six: all elements regroup on Route Aeros for casualty assessment and evac, over! Stop truck.
Abort, back up, back up! Holy shit.
That's right, I'm a G, you can't touch me.
I'm good, I'm good.
(GUNFIRE) Warrior Blue 1, Lancer 6, do you copy? We are trapped in a mobile.
Blue 1, do you copy? Lancer 6, we're trying.
The convoy is blocking us, over.
It's no use Colonel.
Red 1, Rescue 1 has aborted for casualty collection, over.
Comanche 6, how bad is it, over? Everybody will live, don't worry about us, over.
And Colonel Volesky, Rescue 2, over? Still in heavy contact, taking casualties.
That's the fire you're hearing, over.
They may still get through.
If not, I just need you to hold down the fort a little longer.
Can you do that for me, over.
Roger that, over.
Comanche 6 out.
(GUNFIRE) I'm cold, lock one ammo.
I'm out of ammo too, sir.
We clear, everyone good? - Yeah.
- Garza, I'm wet, I'm wet.
Bad news, homie.
You either pissed your pants or your canteen didn't make it.
I told you we'd be fine.
I think you just saved our lives, Sergeant.
We ain't out of nothing yet.
Let's move.
All Warrior Elements, Lancer 6, follow us out.
Any vehicles still battle-able and without urgent casualties, regroup with Comanche 6 on Route Aeros.
Everyone else, evac to War Eagle, over.
He was having a baby boy.
Sir? He was having a baby boy.
Hang in there, Cason.
We did well, didn't we, Sergeant? Yeah, we did well.
You ain't afraid, right? Hell, no, I ain't afraid.
Well, I ain't afraid either, Sergeant.
Tell Allison I wasn't afraid.
ERIC: We weren't Al-Sadr's real target.
We were bait.
Like when assholes set off a little bomb and wait for the first responders to detonate the real one.
They ambushed us to draw out the rescues and mow them down.
Now they're going to come for us for real.
We're just rats in their maze.
Our guys are on the way back, Sergeant.
Yeah, they better get here quick.
It's going to be dark within the hour.
And we got no night vision gear.
Oh, no.
It's an almost full moon tonight, right? That will provide us some light.
Hey, we just got to hold on a little longer.
That's it.
Yeah, right.
Sergeant, they'll be here.
How the hell's anyone supposed to navigate with this stupid thing.
Oh, shit, Sergeant.
Pull over, pull over.
Why are we stopping, Miranda? Engine's been hit.
Everybody off the truck and set up a perimeter.
Roger that, sir.
Told you I had a bad feeling.
as you can see the flood waters have finally receeded amidst all this debris - Belinda.
- Mom, what's the matter? CNN just said there was an ambush in Baghdad.
Four soldiers dead.
What? They said Sadr City.
Isn't that where Robert is? - Where is it? - It was just on.
Maybe somebody else has it.
No, how can be there nothing on? What'd they say, an ambush? Four soldiers dead, what else? I don't know, I just came to get you.
And you're sure they said Sadr City? I think so, yes.
Oh, God.
MILTENBERGER: What do you think? Radiator tank's cracked.
I can seal it but we're going to have to refill it, or we're not going far.
ALFONSO: Of course we don't have a radio.
So now what, we walk home? We're safest here now.
So you can fix it, you just need a coolant, is that right? Water would do.
Water, okay, hey, gather up your canteens.
Bring them over.
No, that ain't enough.
THOMAS: All right, there's got to be water somewhere, right? One of these buildings has to have it.
Hardly anyone here has running water, but you got a point.
What are you thinking? There's got to be a public spigot or something in the area.
You guys wait with the truck, all right? No, you can't go out alone.
It's no use risking more lives.
No, I volunteer, Sergeant.
You need someone to watch your six.
RAFAEL: Yeah, I'm coming too.
We can't fix the truck, we're just sitting ducks out here.
Yeah, all right.
Grab the canteens, let's go.
We need help right now.
(PAINFUL SCREAMS) Get him out, let's go.
You should sit down.
I'll check your injuries in a moment.
GARY: It's not my blood.
What can I do to help, Captain? Please hold this sir.
Are you ready, Specialist? - Is it bad? - Hey, you're going to be okay.
Well, get him sedated.
We'll suture right here.
Sergeant Butler.
We got this, sir.
REGINALD: Sir? I'm sorry about Cason.
I know you two were close.
Thank you, sir.
Did all the badly injured make it back? We're missing a truck, sir.
Miltenberger's.
- What happened? - No one knows.
He was the last vehicle.
Must have gotten stranded.
We can't raise him? He's got no radio.
Thank you, son.
Mom, we rode all the way down to the pier and.
Mom, what's wrong? Come sit down, both of you.
There was a news story.
Not about dad? - Yes.
- No, we don't know.
- What did it say? - Shh, this must be it.
REPORTER (OVER RADIO): Sadr City section of Baghdad.
One Iraqi has reportedly been killed and many wounded.
Iraqis are said to be fighting with rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47 rifles.
Two US Humvees have been set on fire.
Meantime, the cleric whose supporters have staged these protests, has issued a statement calling on his followers to end their demonstration but urging them to "Terrorize the enemy.
" That's it? Mom, there was nothing about Americans dying.
Dads all right, right? Mama? Your daddy is okay, of course, he is.
Gannon, Jacee, go set the table for lunch; you all must be hungry.
- But grandma.
- No, go on now, go on.
What is the matter with you? You are scaring them.
He tried to tell me but I didn't believe him.
Tell you what? Robert knew he would die over there.
He knew it.
Are you sure this is the way Sergeant? Just keep your eyes on your sectors.
I swear its all that guy knows how to say.
So what made you sign up for this, man? Felt like it was either going to be this or jail.
I'm seriously starting to rethink that right about now.
What is it Sergeant? Damn.
What now? This is good, this has got to be water.
Okay, here we go, hand me the canteen.
CLAY: Sir, we got everyone ready to go out, you ready? TROY: I'm not coming back with you.
You got two gunshot wounds, you've lost blood.
I have a plan I wanna try.
(LOUD CLANG) Martin, up across, Young, you push forward.
(CHEWING) Let's go.
And then we go all the way around to route Silver, and take that to Delta, and then attack south.
We keep the Bradleys in front and hopefully we'll have the crusader tanks back in the fight by the time we reach the target area.
What do you think, over? Major Six, Brother Troy that's a solid plan.
But before you launch, I need you to try to find Miltenberger.
He's got an almost full platoon on an unarmored LMTV.
We can't risk having two units stranded in an enemy-controlled city, over.
- Roger that sir, over.
- Godspeed brother, six out.
(INAUDIBLE CHATTER) (PAINFUL SCREAMS) - CNN is saying 4 dead.
- Who are the wounded? They said at least 40.
We want their names.
LEANN: If everyone could just, just please quiet down.
I'm sorry, we don't have any information and I have to tell you that even if we did, I couldn't reveal names until all of the next of kin have been located.
Understand that these rules are in place for a reason.
We all know information spreads quickly, especially wrong information.
So, as hard as it is right now We want the names of the wounded.
GINA: Everyone, we are all anxious.
I am anxious, and so is Leann.
Our husbands are in this too, and we don't know anything about them either.
I had Merrick right before this deployment started.
And Troy had just a few days with him before he had to go.
We all have things that make this so hard, each of us, different things.
I promise, as soon as we're able, we will contact you.
So please, go home so we can reach you and hopefully, with good news.
Hey, hey don't spread wrong information? You were the one who told us we had nothing to worry about.
I know and I'm sorry.
You said we were family, that you were here for us.
I am here for you, we both are.
Then help us, tell us something, anything.
- I can't.
- You're just a liar.
Come on, Lupita.
Come on.
Everyone's just upset.
It's all right.
If it helps them to be angry with me, if that takes away even just a little bit of her pain, I'll gladly take it.
ISRAEL: It's crazy, but you know what I keep thinking about? Hmm? When I was 16, my dad used to make me stay up and wait for my sisters, and they go on dates.
I was the only boy and he had to work night, so that's how it went, man.
I used to scare the shit out of them when they got home.
Like, God, they used to get so mad at me.
You know what else I've been thinking about? It's what we should do when we get out of here, man.
Yeah? Yeah, I always wanted to open up a guitar shop.
- Guitar shop? You even play? - Yeah.
I'll learn shit.
Why not, man? We'll just hang out and play some awesome tunes.
We could get my dad involved, you know, like make it a whole little family business.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, I mean that, I never had a brother before you, so Movement.
RAFAEL: Whoa, whoa, whoa, don't shoot us, dogs.
We got cold drinks.
MILTENBERGER: How's the coolant tank? DRIVER: It should hold.
MIRANDA: Back on Copper, when you ordered us to stop and back up, how did you spot those guys? I couldn't see shit.
Just lucky, I guess.
I guess we'll know soon.
Yeah.
That book won't stop no bullets, you know.
Yeah, I know.
Let me guess, a Bible? - Nah, just poems.
- Porn? You got - Poems, like poetry.
Poetry.
- Pornetry? Poetry.
Well, why would anybody carry poetry around, bro? It'd be better if it was some ass, for real.
Hey look, it's Alan Seeger.
The, the American poet, joined the French Foreign Legion to, uh, fight the Germans in World War I.
All right, I dig that.
Go ahead, let me hear the one you like.
Go ahead, bro.
All right, uh "I have a rendezvous with death and some disputed barricade, when spring comes back with rustling shade and apple-blossoms fill the air.
I have a rendezvous with death, when spring brings back blue days and fair.
" That's the one you like? Okay, you're twisted Young, officially.
It's dark, I know it's got a note of hope in it, though.
Did Seeger come back from war? ERIC: Where the hell are they, what are they waiting for? SHANE: I do not know.
You know, I keep seeing Chen's face in my head.
Not like, not like in the courtyard but, you know, on the, on the plane on the way over here.
Just, he's was just so peaceful.
I mean, I don't know how, but, I don't know.
I guess I just, um, I guess I hope that's how he is now, you know.
Or singing.
The man loved to sing.
I keep trying to remember the last thing that he and I said to each other.
It was right before we rolled out and I walked past your Humvee and he was making fun of Fisk's shave job.
And I said something.
I can't remember.
What the hell was it, why can't I remember? (PAINFUL GRUNT) You all right, Jackson? Yeah, I just got to pee real bad.
Jesus, just go, I'll watch your sector.
They got me in the fucking face.
SHANE: Anybody see where it's coming from? Fuck.
Okay, I'm pressing now.
I'm pressing now.
Oh, shit.
MINA: Hey, Shaggy? Um, yeah? Who's driving? Rello.
Mommy, let's do that again.
Yeah, that was fun, huh and what else are we going to do? Ice cream.
And somebody's gonna write Daddy, right? Amber Aguero.
ROY (OVER PHONE): Amber, it's Roy.
Hi, it's grandpa ranger Roy.
Go, go, go, wash your hands.
Hey Roy, what's up? ROY (OVER PHONE): No one's contacted you? No.
ROY (OVER PHONE): There's been an attack in Iraq.
You sure no one's tried to call you? Um, no, no, I don't think so.
ROY (OVER PHONE): Well, maybe we shouldn't worry yet.
Roy, what's happening? ROY (OVER PHONE): Platoon was ambushed in Sadr City.
Four dead, at least forty wounded.
Battle still going on.
No one's called you, though.
That's good, it's probably not his unit.
No, it is, it's his unit.
It's his platoon.
ROY (OVER PHONE): How do you know that? I just feel it, it's him.
Roy, I have to call you back.
Honey, hey.
Daddy's gonna die and it's all my fault.
Sorry.
- No, sweetie.
No, no.
- Daddy's been hurt? Something may have happened with Daddy's unit but Daddy is such a good soldier.
He knows how to take care of himself, yeah? So we don't have to worry.
Daddy's gonna call us really soon, okay? It's gonna be okay.
SHANE: Conserve your shots.
Fire only at confirmed targets.
Talk to me, doc.
How is he? They shot me in the fucking mouth.
Hey, no, they didn't, mate.
You just got nicked in the lip by a fragment, okay? It bleeds but you're gonna be fine, all right? Your hand's gonna be fine, too.
Work with me.
- Bourquin.
How's Hayhurst? - Yeah? I got an exit wound.
Do you feel your arm, Sergeant? Yeah, it's okay.
Ah, shit.
What? Sir, I think the bullet dislocated his shoulder.
Take him downstairs.
No, no, I can, I can use my offhand to fire.
You sure, man? Yes, yes.
Sergeant, you okay? I can't breathe.
Doc, you sure he wasn't hit elsewhere? I can't, I can't, I can't breathe.
- Doc, you're sure? Are you sure? - I'm sure.
I'm gonna check on Hayhurst.
I'm sure.
I can't breathe.
Okay, Sergeant Jackson, listen to me.
Listen to the sound of my voice.
You are having a panic attack, you understand? You are fine, okay? I need you to breathe for me.
Slow, deep breaths.
Okay, control it, that's all you need.
Just slow and deep but one.
Give me one, one in.
Come on, in, in.
Slow, there you go, there you go.
Give me one more, there you go, see? I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't.
Listen to me, that's not here right now, okay? Right now, it's just me and you.
I need you to listen to me, okay? Jackson, I need you to breathe for me, okay? Just breathe.
Just breathe.
There you go, all right, see that? Look at that, better? I need to be relieved.
I cannot do that, Sergeant, I cannot do that.
Right now, I need every man and every bullet on this roof, you understand? All right look, I get it.
It is hard, all right? And it is fucking scary.
And when you get back to base, you could cry, you can break down, you can ask to be reassigned, whatever you need, okay? Look at me.
Listen to me, okay? But right now, on this roof, my responsibility is for the safety of all of these men, okay? Every one.
And I need you here with me.
You understand? I need you, you can do this.
Please, sir, I, I can't, I can't.
Switch with Perry, send him up here.
Come on, go.
You go, you watch the family.
Jesus, Sergeant.
You all right? LT wants us to trade places.
Sergeant, are you.
Sit down, sit down, sit down, you all stay right there.
SETH: Sir, I don't wanna sound pessimistic but how are we supposed to rescue two platoons with just this? Swope, Volesky on the phone? - Yes, sir.
- Grenade! (GUNFIRE) You okay, sir? Listen, hey, are you okay? Can you hear me, sir? Sir, can you hear me? Why on Earth would Robert think he was gonna die? He had a premonition.
He dreamed it.
It was something that had happened in Kosovo.
A woman had come to his checkpoint.
Her baby had been taken during the war and found in a mass grave outside of town.
She wandered all over the area carrying the body, beside herself.
MILTENBERGER: Ma'am, let me help you.
Ma'am, you can't go over there.
Ma'am, stop walking.
Don't take another step.
Ma'am, ma'am, stop.
Don't take another step, ma'am.
Let me help you.
Ma'am, stop walking please.
Ma'am, please let me help you.
Stop, please stop walking, let me help you.
(SPEAKS ALBANIAN).
Ma'am, stop.
He later found out what her last words were.
It's too late.
That dream doesn't mean anything.
That's what I told him, but Robert was sure.
Villagers in Kosovo had told him that a gathering of ravens was an omen of death.
He thought that would be his sign in Iraq, too.
(ENGINE SPUTTERS) What the fuck? Movement! - Unarmed.
- Let them pass.
"It may be he shall take my hand and lead me into his dark land and close my eyes and quench my breath.
It may be I shall pass him still.
But I've a rendezvous with Death at midnight in some flaming town.
And I to my pledged word am true.
I shall not fail that rendezvous.
