The Voice US (2011) s14e09 Episode Script

The Battles, Part 3

1 - Bang bang, there goes your heart - DALY: Tonight KELLY: The battles are when we see what these artists are capable of.
DALY: Week two of the battles begins! KELLY: And they're so good, and they're so eclectic.
- I'm excited.
- DALY: Helping to create some of the greatest battles in "Voice" history will be platinum-selling pop sensation Shawn Mendes, Grammy Award-nominated singer and songwriter Julia Michaels, country-music legend Trace Adkins, and chart-topping pop star and Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld.
So good! I find you both incredibly inspiring.
I'm gonna be singing a Kelly Clarkson song - in front of Kelly Clarkson.
- In front of Kelly, yes.
That's, like, intimidating.
Tom Petty is hallowed ground.
Don't do me like that I just might love you, baby Don't do me like that - I love this show.
- Whoo! It's got such a soul and a beating heart.
- Whoo! - Oh, my gosh! I love y'all! You guys both delivered an actual perfect performance.
Thank you.
DALY: With the knockouts looming The winner DALY: every decision This is the hardest show ever.
will be impactful and every steal Bang, bang, into the room What?! That is a steal! crucial.
You're not leaving here.
The epic Season 14 battles continue Yes! Kelly! - Whoo! - right now! Bang, bang, bang, bang I'm ready to steal what's ready to be stolen.
Ahh.
But what I actually think is that I'm gonna gift you all with many steals.
Oh, will we be so blessed - as to have the steals from Alicia Keys? - Yeah.
I'm sad about losing on my team.
But I am excited about stealing somebody from y'all's team and then beating you with them.
[Laughs] Like, literally, like, picking up the person and beating beating us with a human being? No.
Don't listen to him.
That's not true.
I might cry, so whatever.
You are not going to have a good time.
I'm emotional.
Let's get these battles popping.
Let's start the battles? Here we go.
DALY: Let's meet tonight's first battle pairing from Team Blake.
KALEB: My name's Kaleb Lee.
My mom had me when she was 18 years old.
My biological father I've never met, and now I have three beautiful kids.
Adopting a child was important to me 'cause I couldn't keep that benefit from a child out there that didn't have an opportunity to have a father.
Took almost a year and a half, but we got a phone call.
They said, "He's 11 months old, and and here's his his his name was Johander.
" I am so excited about doing music with my family around.
Well, I'm what I am I run a marketing company, and the last time I pursued music was about eight years ago.
[Cheers and applause] Kaleb, I have one more thing to say.
And don't you wanna fall asleep with me tonight? His wife is right there! [Laughter] Your voice reminds me of the Texas red-dirt-type country music.
Stand out on country radio.
- I pick Blake.
- All right! PRYOR: All right, Kaleb.
I would compare Kaleb's voice to a '66 Cadillac El Dorado.
It's nice and smooth, so this battle's gonna be a challenge for me.
Oh, boy.
Only a few years ago, I was playing music all the time.
Four or five nights a week, traveling.
But then I put music on the back burner to work construction.
To be where I'm sitting right now, it's, uh, mind-boggling.
I don't need no doctor [Laughs] Come on, Pryor! Pryor is just an incredible guitar player, incredible performer.
A four-chair turn, and I gotta go up against that.
The way that you make that guitar sound is absolutely unique.
Dude, you are an incredible vocalist.
It sounds like you smoked a pack of cigarettes and drank a bottle of whiskey right before you got onstage, man.
It's not true, Mom.
It's not true.
It's not true.
[Laughter] I'm gonna pick Blake.
I'm sorry.
Yes! Yes! That's awesome.
That is awesome.
[Cheers and applause] [Both laugh] I love you, buddy.
I love you, too, man.
Caleb's a very close, personal friend of mine.
We were roommates.
He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
Thanks for coming to be my mentor.
You know, you were my mentor when I first came into the business.
I don't recall.
You're the guy I would always call and have questions.
Do you remember? Some of it.
You do? You didn't make a very big impression on me.
[Laughter] - What's up, boys? - What's up? This is my friend, Trace Adkins.
- Yeah! - How you doing, sir? He's bigger than he looks.
KALEB: Seeing Trace Adkins, four Grammy nominations, three ACM awards, sitting next to Blake was really cool.
I mean, that's two country superstars, and they're there to hear you sing.
Hillbilly bone in the house now.
Mm-hmm.
[Laughter] So, I feel like Pryor, he's got a rock edge, some blues in there.
And then, obviously, you're a country singer.
Tom Petty always lands in the in the middle there.
I gave Kaleb and Pryor "Don't Do Me Like That.
" Then he said, "You better watch your step Or you're gonna get hurt yourself" This song is a challenge for both of these artists, though, when it comes down to performing it because everybody loves Tom Petty.
This is hallowed ground, is Tom Petty.
It's hard to take liberties with a song like this, so just hit it.
What if I love you, baby? Don't do me like that BLAKE: Kaleb's a great country vocalist, and he's got that ability to make you really pay attention to the lyrics.
Baby, you know you better watch your step Or you're gonna get hurt yourself TRACE: Pryor has a voice that gets your attention.
Got a lot of soul, and you hear that, and you look up, see where that's coming from.
- That's good.
- [Laughs] Kaleb, when you do "Don't do me like that," and then you're trailing off of the word That I know what that is.
That's just You're throwing in a country lick in there.
I don't think you need to do that.
And, Pryor, if it goes to 10, you're on 11 the whole time.
Maybe there's a way to to let it breathe There is.
a little bit more vocally than to just stay there the whole time.
I'd rather hear you sing the melody.
He's right about the melody.
At least At least visit it.
I've always come out of the gates going full blast.
I want to be raspy.
I want to be loud.
Girl, you better watch your step But if I want to win this battle, I have to sing more melodically.
Cut you down to size TRACE: It's tough to take a song like that and then be in a competition like this.
What if I need you, baby? Better them than me.
- Better? - Yeah.
That's actually incredible.
It's almost like y'all are doing it like it's a duet, and it's cool, you know.
Mm-hmm.
And so go out there and have fun, but still be reverent and do it as a tribute.
- For sure.
- Cool.
I'll see you guys at stage rehearsal, but you won't see him anymore, if you're lucky.
[Laughter] PRYOR: Babe, you better watch your step Or you're gonna get hurt yourself Someone's gonna tell you lies BLAKE: Being able to step into these rehearsals and see what's going on behind the scenes is very helpful.
Don't do me like that 'Cause it gives us just that one last-minute opportunity to give them that little edge they might need before they go into the battle.
Whoo! - Yeah.
- Wow.
Man, here on Team Blake, we don't get many battles like that.
- [Laughs] - That's, like, whoa! I get to have one of those kind of battles.
Coming into rehearsal today, you know, everybody's got the butterflies.
Good to see you, buddy.
What's happening? But Blake being there felt really good.
You guys are both injecting the right amount of dynamic.
For you, it's pulling back on the reins a little bit - I gotcha.
- in the in your verse, you know? But But then you let 'em go, and you had to do the opposite.
You had to just Push the gas a little harder.
And you're both doing it.
It's so good.
To have Blake there to appreciate and see that hard work, that's really encouraging for me.
It makes me even more excited about the battle.
Although, you didn't bring your guitar.
Where's your guitar at? I'm not playing in front of either one of you two guys.
[Laughter] I don't want to look like I need lessons.
I just might love you, baby Kaleb and Pryor are blowing my mind right now.
Someone is saying Love can't last that long For a couple of guys who's kind of put music on the back burner, something has built up inside of them, and it's all coming out on this stage right now.
Baby, baby Oh, oh Something special's gonna happen with this battle.
[Cheers and applause] KALEB: I gave music up 10 years ago, started running a business and have three kids and a wife.
DALY: Kaleb Lee! KALEB: For me, what "The Voice" represents is the spark that music gives me that that's been lost.
PRYOR: I started this journey when I was 3 years old, playing the guitar and singing.
It's been 33 years.
It's all leading up to right now.
DALY: Pryor Baird! PRYOR: This is one of the biggest moments of my life.
I'm gonna go out there and kick some ass.
[Laughs] Yeah! Whoo! The battle starts now.
I was talking with a friend of mine Said a woman had hurt his pride Told him that she loved him so And turned around and let him go Then he said, "You better watch your step Or you're gonna get hurt yourself Someone's gonna tell you lies Cut you down to size" Don't do me like that Don't do me like that What if I love you, baby? Don't do me like that Don't do me like that Don't do me like that Someday I might need you, baby Don't do me like that Oh, listen, baby, can you see Baby, you would bury me If you was in the public eye Givin' someone else a try Girl, you better, you know, watch your step Or you're gonna get hurt yourself Someone's gonna tell you lies Cut you down to size Don't do me like that Don't do me like that What if I need you, baby? Don't do me like that Don't do me like that Don't do me like that I just might love you, baby Don't do me like that 'Cause somewhere deep down inside Someone is saying Oh, love doesn't last that long, yeah I've had this feeling inside Night and day And now I can't take it no more Yeah Listen, honey, can you see Baby, you would bury me If you were in the public eye Givin' someone else a try Oh, girl, you better watch your step Or you're gonna get hurt yourself Someone's gonna tell you lies Cut you down to size Don't do me like that Don't do me like that What if I love you, baby? Don't, don't, don't, no Don't do me like that Don't do me like that I just might need you, baby Don't do me like that Don't do me like that Don't do me like that Baby, baby, baby Oh, oh, oh, ohhh [Cheers and applause] - That was good! - Whoo! - That was real good.
- Yes-uh! KELLY: Y'all both have such cool tones.
It's amazing how y'all can go with that raspy, like, cool, almost Aerosmith kind of thing with Pryor.
But then you come in here.
Kaleb, you've got that, too.
That was a really evenly matched battle.
That was a solid battle.
Each of you brought each other's A-game out.
You know, good job on pairing them for that, but bad job because, like, wow, you're gonna have to get rid of one.
[Laughter] But if I had to pick one, Pryor, you're an obvious, like, huge talent, could go tour right now, make a record, and you'd be a hugely successful artist.
There is something about you, Kaleb, that I think you might be a dark horse.
Thank you so much.
[Cheers and applause] Man, I just That was so fun.
And y'all really just had this vibrant energy with you both.
That was just crazy, and y'all both owned it.
Um [Sighs] I would go with Kaleb.
Thank you.
Thank you.
[Cheers and applause] Hello, gentlemen.
- Hello, sir.
- Hello, sir.
Pryor, look, you're a beastly man.
In the blinds, I, like, bordered on poor taste as far as how much I fought for you.
[Laughter] I'm sorry.
So, like, however, Kaleb, I don't want to take away anything from you because there's a certain subtlety to what you do that I think is really special.
I don't want subtlety to ever be lost.
I think there's an artist in you, but for this one, I'm I'm with Pryor.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
DALY: Thank you, Coaches! All right, Blake.
It all comes down to you.
Before you tell us your final selection, give us your thoughts.
Both of these guys, in their 30s, had taken music and put it aside, and and it's shocking because to hear how talented both of you are, it's like it sounds to me like you're still playing at a bar somewhere every single night.
And I want to say thanks to both of you for coming here to "The Voice" and letting us experience that.
Thank you.
You know, Kaleb, dude, man, you stepped up to it.
Wow, like Thank you.
Thanks.
shocking.
Unbelievable.
And, Pryor, you come back out here, and it's like, "Oh, crap.
This guy's for real.
He brought it again like he did in the blinds.
" And I have to make a decision, and this is absolutely, without question, the suckiest part of this job for me.
Blake, who is the winner of this battle? Uh The winner of this battle is Pryor.
[Cheers and applause] Pryor, congratulations! You're moving on to the knockouts, representing Team Blake Shelton.
I'm heartbroken over Kaleb and Pryor's battle.
Good job.
Sir, thank you very much.
Both of those guys could win this show, but there's nobody else that sounds like Pryor, a-and I think that's probably why I ended up going with him.
Thank you.
PRYOR: I'm just excited to stay on with Blake and continue forward on his team.
I've been dreaming about this since I was 3 years old, and now I get to live it out.
And it just gets better every single day.
Coaches, let me remind you, Caleb is available to steal.
Caleb, anything you want to say to your coach? Blake, I I'm so thankful for this opportunity.
It's reminded me of why I did it before.
- Yeah.
- So, thank you.
- Thank you for the opportunity.
- Yeah.
Give it up for Kaleb Lee, ladies and gentlemen! What?! Look at that! Look at that! Hell, yeah! That's what I'm talking about! That's a steal! Kelly Clarkson! KELLY: I have been a big fan of his since the blind auditions.
I think he's got great potential and doing a lot of really cool things vocally.
I had to get him on my team.
I think that you're spectacular.
Thank you.
And I love that I have a country singer like you.
- Thank you so much.
- Kaleb, Team KC.
Don't worry about it.
Two K's, hey! [Laughs] KALEB: Kelly saw it from my blinds.
She was the other one to turn.
I'm super, super thankful.
I've liked him since his family and his kids came out here.
Really? Yeah.
Everybody loves him already.
He's such a good dude.
Even in the blinds, I remember that.
Yeah.
Oh, I love it! - Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
- He is killer.
- He'll be in the finale.
- Still to come Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door - DALY: uplifting performances - Whoa! Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars - Whoo-hoo-hoo! - I love y'all! [Whoosh] DALY: inspire our coaches to steal.
And I'm ecstatic! Just thank you for making me feel something.
It didn't feel like a battle.
This felt like an incredible Grammy performance.
And they're both so cute.
This is not "The Dating Game.
" It's "The Voice.
" What are you talking about? This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
Let's check in on Adam's first battle pairing of the night.
MIA: As someone who has always struggled with self-confidence, people telling me, "You can't sing because you don't wear a size 2," for a long time, I let that kind of take me away from what I loved.
I was once that girl that didn't have the strength to even stand up in front of my family and sing.
I shouldn't have let people tear me down.
I shouldn't have let people tell me that I can't do anything that I want to do.
I am so blessed to be here.
I have watched the show since Season 1.
It's a dream come true.
I remember being onstage at the blind audition and, like, walking up there and knowing that no one was gonna see what I looked like.
So we'll piss off the neighbors That's Mia! I'm being paired up with Mia? Be in the bed all day Bed all day, bed all day GENESIS: Mia has a really, like, rich tone to her voice.
It's just so, like, raw, but, at the same time, soulful.
It's a paradise And it's intimidating, but I'm also very excited.
Oh, my God.
You are gonna be the best one-chair turn of the season, maybe ever.
Whoo, thank you.
GENESIS: My parents were born in Cuba, so I'm first-generation Cuban American.
They gave up their music careers to give me a better life.
[Voice breaking] They've given up so much for me so I can be here.
Sorry.
I hope you're somewhere praying [Laughing] Oh, my God.
I knew it! I knew it was gonna be Genesis.
I have chills listening to her sing right now.
Genesis has a voice that is so powerful.
She is just this little itty-bitty thing, but, like, when she opens her mouth, it is [Chuckles] like, incredible.
I'm nervous.
She can sing.
Oh, my God.
[Cheers and applause] Julia Michaels, everybody.
Let's give her a round of applause.
- You're mega-talented.
- Thanks, man.
- And now you're stuck with me.
- I'm stuck.
That's fine.
It's okay.
- There are worse.
- You know.
There are worse people to be stuck with.
Not many, but [Laughs] Ladies! - Oh, my gosh, hi! - [Laughs] - Nice to meet you.
- We're so excited.
Julia Michaels is one of the most incredible songwriters of our generation.
She's written songs for Justin Bieber and Kelly Clarkson.
I mean, we're singing a Kelly song.
This is kind of just like a perfect fit.
What are you singing today? Um, we're gonna sing "Because Of You" by Kelly Clarkson.
I'm very concerned 'cause I'm gonna be singing a Kelly Clarkson song - in front of Kelly Clarkson.
- In front of Kelly, yes.
That's, like, intimidating.
I will not make the same mistakes ADAM: Genesis and Mia are doing "Because Of You" a very classic Kelly Clarkson song.
It's never easy to do that in front of the artist.
It's a tough challenge, but they're both gonna do amazing.
I never stray too far from the sidewalk JULIA: I like Mia's deep tone, which I feel like you don't really hear often.
Because of you, I learned to play on the safe side ADAM: Genesis can pierce through a band, and she has a really strong tone.
They have unique voices.
I don't think that one is necessarily better than the other.
They're both great singers.
But everyone around me because of you I am afraid Amazing.
- Whoo! - Thank you.
This is a straightforward pop song, and I want to just kind of start there.
You guys should be singing back and forth because I need to hear everything you guys can do.
So it's more important, I think, for you guys and even for me.
Just stand out individually, yeah.
Totally.
It's good to interact a little Yeah.
but this is a very independent thing for both of you.
Because of you, I don't know how They both had these really intense, soulful vibratos and I think it's really special and really unique.
I'm ashamed of my life, and now it's empty That was 100 times better.
- I agree.
- That felt so much better.
But it seems like you're chewing on your jaw a lot when you're doing a vibrato.
It hurts watching you because I don't want you - to hurt yourself.
- [Laughs] For real, like, you can you can damage yourself that way.
Okay.
And it's not something I want you to be self-conscious of, but I do think you can create the same sound - Right.
- without hurting your jaw.
I think sometimes when I, like, get a little nervous, - I tend to, like - Over.
- It gets a little bit - Yeah, gotta keep the jaw loose.
MIA: If I want to win this battle, I really just have to stay loose.
Not just the singing technicality, but in general.
This battle is about staying in your element.
Figure out a way to make it your own.
- Mm-hmm.
- Yeah.
You guys are doing a lot of the original ad-libs and runs that she does.
Put yourself in it and actually feel it.
I think that's one of the things that makes an artist.
JULIA: They both sang the song too on the nose, and this is the place to make it your own, especially if you're about to perform that song in front of Kelly Clarkson.
You do need to inject yourselves into it.
What you shouldn't do is stray too far away from it.
- Completely.
- Just strike the balance, and I think that will also tell me a lot of what I need to know moving forward.
In order to make this song my own, I'm going to have to find that perfect emotion for the song.
If I don't put my heart and soul into this song, I could be going home.
I'm pumped, you guys.
If I'm We're good here.
- Sounds great.
- Me too.
ADAM: This might be the hardest battle for me to decide.
They're both really different, and they both have their stuff to work on, but they're both equally capable of taking this battle.
GENESIS: Because of you, I learned to play On the safe side so I don't get hurt Because of you, I find it hard to trust Not only me, but everyone around me Because of you Whoo! So, there's always variables that are gonna take place.
And it seems like you guys are both thinkers.
The best advice I can offer you is you have to rise above whatever variables exist.
It'll be a roomful of people.
You're gonna be more nervous.
You're singing in front of her.
I know.
[Chuckles] Don't worry so much about the technical.
Loosen up, loosen up.
I-It was a little tight.
Yeah.
Like, it's just another day.
Just singing to Kelly Clarkson.
It's no big deal.
I never stray too far from the sidewalk This does boil down to confidence and who will break through on this song.
As long as you have the the humanity and the emotion, t-that's all I really care about.
- Thank you.
- My girls.
- Thank you so much.
- Very proud of you.
I think Kelly's gonna love it.
DALY: Put yourself in our coaches' chairs.
Get the "Voice" official app.
Play along and build your own "Voice" team.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back.
I know that.
[Imitating piano riff] [Chuckles] These people are about to sing "Because Of You.
" My song.
DALY: Two talented artists enter now from Team Adam.
Genesis Diaz! [Cheers and applause] Come on, Genesis! Versus Mia Boostrom! [Cheers and applause] Whoo! Whoo-o-o! The battle starts now.
Mm, mm, mm I will not make the same mistakes that you did I will not let myself cause my heart so much misery I will not break the way you did You fell so hard I learned the hard way to never let it get that far Because of you I never stray too far from the sidewalk Because of you I learned to play on the safe side So I don't get hurt Because of you, I find it hard to trust Not only me, but everyone around me Because of you I am afraid I watched you die I heard you cry every night in your sleep Yes! And now I cry in the middle of the night For the same damn thing Because of you I never stray too far from the sidewalk Because of you I learned to play on the safe side So I don't get hurt Because of you, I tried my hardest Just to forget everything Because of you I don't know how to let anyone else in Because of you, I'm ashamed of my life And now it's empty Because of you, I am afraid Because of you Pretty.
Because of you Oo-o-oh [Cheers and applause] Thank you.
Whoo! Man, Adam, talk about handing them a hard song - and in front of the artist.
- No presh.
I was looking at Genesis.
She's, like, "There's Kelly right there.
Oh, my God.
" Yeah.
I gotta say, you guys are both great singers, and hearing your performance of that song makes me realize how hard that song, vocally, like, - oh, my God.
That's a beast.
- There's no breath.
Yeah, that is a beast, you know.
I felt like Mia had the more complete performance overall, so I would probably go with with Mia.
[Applause] Mia, you do come off a bit more earthy.
And, Genesis, you are more like a lioness, and and so I actually thought that this song suited Genesis better, in my opinion.
[Cheers and applause] I loved hearing y'all sing it.
I thought it was really cool.
I mean, I've been singing it for years now.
Not too many, 'cause I'm still young.
[Laughter] But, um, I'm just saying.
But, um, I wrote that when I was 16, and it's it's very wordy because even when I write, I talk this much.
It's very It's all wordy.
[Laughs] Genesis, you're a pistol.
You're, like, ready for, like, Pat Benatar.
Yes.
Like, you're like It's, like, she's ready to go.
And I did think this song was probably best suited for Mia.
Thank you.
You have these low ends that I would die for.
But I was really blessed just to hear both of you do it.
It's very much a compliment.
DALY: Thank you, Coaches! Adam, you got the final decision.
- Give us some thoughts.
- Genesis I love how almost out of control you are.
Mm.
That's exciting because you may not be as in control as Mia.
You have so much excellence when it comes to technical singing.
But it's kind of like, what you both have is what I love.
It is kind of a stalemate.
You know what I mean? 'Cause I-I do think that you're both so different, and you have so much to add as a vocalist, as a performer.
Um Tough one here, Adam, obviously.
You can only pick one.
Who is the winner of this battle? [Humming "Jeopardy!" theme] [Laughter] The winner of this battle is Mia.
I have to go with Mia.
[Cheers and applause] DALY: Mia, congratulations! ADAM: Mia's got an incredible vibrato.
She's got a really great technique.
Her tone is so rich.
Mia just has the vocal chops that I need to have on my team.
Come here, both of you.
That was so hard because you both made me so proud.
You both have to know that, okay? MIA: The fact that Adam believes in me enough to make me the best performer that I could ever be, it means so much to me.
Thank you.
Coaches, let me remind you, Genesis is available to steal.
Genesis, anything you'd like to say to your coach? [Voice breaking] I just want to thank you, Adam, for everything that you, um, told me.
- Can I tell you something? - Yeah.
You can't stop doing this.
You're 19 years old.
Everyone is gonna love you.
You just have to keep doing this.
DALY: Give it up for Genesis Diaz, everybody! [Cheers and applause] I love this girl, like I know.
I don't know.
I just feel like the rock tinge - You're gonna love what she's doing.
- is a little more what I want.
ALICIA: I still have both steals left, but I didn't steal Genesis because I thought that her voice was not as warm as a voice of that I would want to have on my team.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
JUSTIN: I'm about to take the stage for my battle, and I am anxious and excited.
DALY: Entering now from Team Kelly, Justin Kilgore! JUSTIN: And I'm ready to have this moment onstage with Molly.
It's gonna be emotional.
DALY: Versus Molly Stevens! MOLLY: I'm so excited to be paired with Justin.
He's someone that I've grown to really love.
You know, I've got a very similar story, and we connect outside of music.
I come from a small southern town, and being Southern Baptist, it wasn't easy coming out to my parents.
But I'm grateful that we've been able to work through some differences and love one another as family.
Heavenly day People only believe, if you're country on this show, that Blake can help you, but that is not true.
I have had no help from Blake, and I have been successful in country music.
[Laughs] I'm just saying.
- I pick Kelly! - Yeah! Ugh! Molly Stevens.
Something that I can learn from Molly is to be comfortable in my own skin, 'cause I feel like she's at that point.
She's been where I've been.
Coming from a little town, I definitely stuck out.
I knew that I was gay from a very young age, and I loved cheerleading, and that was not a thing for guys at my school.
During college, I did country music for a little bit, and it really didn't work out for me.
It just wasn't authentic.
I wasn't myself.
I wasn't out.
So this means so much to me, being here and being myself.
[Voice breaking] But I'm kind of scared to death.
Tomorrow I definitely didn't expect a four-chair turn at all.
KELLY: Blocked.
Blocked.
Blocked.
What made you go for country music? Reba McEntire I was obsessed with her.
Do y'all know Reba McEntire? This is gonna be pathetic if you do not pick [Thud] What? Oh, I heard that.
But I'm j That was the Lord saying, "Pick Kelly.
" [Laughter] - Kelly Clarkson.
- Yes! JUSTIN: I'm really excited to be on Team Kelly.
She breeds confidence, and she's comfortable in her own skin, and so I feel like that that's something I could definitely learn from her.
[Laughs] Like we didn't know that.
Absolutely.
Justin and I are both in the country music genre, and that hasn't always been easy, and I've been able to share experience, strength, and hope with him.
- Come on, country.
- [Laughs] Being gay's just a tiny bit of who we are.
[Both laugh] HAILEE: You have to imagine, like, this has got to be so hard for them, 'cause this is an opportunity to show what you've got.
It's kind of terrifying for them a bit because they're singing for us, but at the same time Sure.
I think it's kind of comforting 'cause I make them feel confident, like, with the advice 'cause we want them to sound amazing.
Right.
But I always try and go with constructive criticism.
- Amazing.
- I'm very excited.
I am, too.
Hey! - Hello.
- What's up, Molly? MOLLY: When I saw Kelly and Hailee Steinfeld, I was star struck.
Don't be shy.
Where you going? I don't know.
Hailee has been so successful in the movie industry and in music, and so what an advantage to help us with, like, emotionally telling the story of our song.
I chose the song "Burning House" because no matter if you're singing Americana, folk, rock, country, those genres all lend to storytelling.
That's right.
Y'all are really good at that.
I've been sleepwalking Beautiful.
HAILEE: They both were just so cool.
Molly's voice is so captivating.
She has this ability to make you hang on to every single word she's saying.
In this burnin' house KELLY: Justin has this solid, old-school country voice that I love, but he's got this incredible kind of soulful R&B thing, too.
Like, I don't know why I said R&B.
[Chuckles] Burnin' house Whoo! In this burnin' house Damn.
Wow.
Girlfriend, you have one of the coolest tones - I've ever heard.
- Thank you.
You also have this amazing, like, raspy quality Rasp.
- that's, like, so good.
- Thank you.
I don't know if I'm hearing you stretch much.
I'm hearing her all over the place 'cause she's going low to high.
I've been sleepwalkin' It's the same.
It's just, like, jumping up.
Is that too high for you, though, in this key? It's It's high.
Yeah.
It's pushing? I mean, I'll try it, but it's that's Ohh, that's pushing.
I've been sleepwalkin' Wanderin' all night Tryin' to take what's lost and broke And make it right - See? - Beautiful.
Whoo! You're like, "Oh, that's really high for me," and then you just, like, nail it.
Aww.
There are not country males doing that.
JUSTIN: That sing like that.
Yeah.
HAILEE: Your voice is incredible, and have the confidence in that and knowing that.
If anything, work on feeling like this is your story, and it's your song, and for these two minutes, it's it's it's you.
Not believing in myself is a problem, especially at this point of the competition.
I need to get it together.
Flames are gettin' bigger now Yes! In this burnin' house JUSTIN: The burning house that I'm in at the moment is being okay with who I am and not caring about what someone's gonna say about that.
You get very introspective.
I do that, too.
A lot of singers do.
Mm-hmm.
So just make sure you look out at some point.
Right.
- A-And even if it's not out, at him.
- Right.
Like, you're acting.
You're not in love.
We get it.
- Right, right.
- But just, you know, act it out.
- No, we're not in love.
- [Laughs] We have, like, a similar story, so I think that that's what we're kind of connecting on.
Yeah.
Wait.
What do you mean? We just need to keep on Oh, we're both gay, and we're both, you know Both gay.
Yeah.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Oh.
So, this song is like Like, you picking it was is actually, like - And putting us together was, like, amazing.
- it's been really special, 'cause we've both kind of been in these broken places.
A lot of people struggle with that and being open and ho - especially in country music.
- Right.
Exactly.
Yeah.
- Yeah, absolutely.
- They struggle with being open.
I wish I said this before you guys had said that, 'cause I really feel something in your voices, but I find you both incredibly inspiring, and I-I felt it.
Maybe that's why you're great storytellers, too.
You just struggled so much having to Ohh! Yeah, there's there's a background.
- Yeah.
- I feel it.
- I love it.
- It's awesome.
MAN: Five, four, three I had a dream about a burnin' house God, it's so cool.
The winner of this battle needs to connect, especially after they shared with me their story and how this song really means something to them.
I want them to be believable singing this message.
You both have this thing where you're rigid.
Like, just don't Mm.
You do the thing that Blake does.
That's right.
I'm gonna call Blake out right now.
Every time Blake's on stage, when he's hitting a note, his head hits it with him.
He's, like, doing this.
You do that, too.
- Don't! You got it.
- Okay.
This is a bold moment.
That's right.
Y'all told me you connected in a certain way.
- This is a very big moment for y'all.
- Yeah.
That's right.
It's just such a beautiful, intimate song.
Burnin' house Stand up! KELLY: Really, it's just the body language of making sure they own it and the confidence and just being comfortable in their skin on stage.
That's really what I'm wanting.
Yes! You guys.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to night three of the battles.
[Cheers and applause] Whoo! Let the battle begin.
I had a dream about a burnin' house You were stuck inside, I couldn't get you out I laid beside you, and I pulled you close And the two of us went up in smoke Love isn't all that it seems I did you wrong I'll stay here with you until this dream is gone I've been sleepwalkin' I've been wanderin' all night Tryin' to take what's lost and broke And make it right Whoo! I've been sleepwalkin' Too close to the fire But it's the only place that I can hold you tight In this burnin' house The flames are gettin' bigger now In this burnin' house And I can hold onto you somehow In this burnin' house Oh, but I don't wanna wake up In this burnin' house I've been sleepwalkin' I've been wanderin' all night Tryin' to take what's lost and broke And make it right I've been sleepwalkin' Too close to the fire But it's the only place that I can hold you tight In this burnin' house In this burnin' house In this burnin' house [Cheers and applause] What are you gonna do? [Cheers and applause] Whoo! ALICIA: Justin and Molly, there was a real tenderness between y'all.
That was beautiful.
I think you can just see the friendship.
I really appreciated hearing, Molly, your twang.
And, Justin WOMAN: Whoo! you have [chuckles] You got fans.
Whoo-hoo! And, um, you have a-a warmth and a passion.
This a tough one for me, Kelly.
- I'm not sure.
- I know.
I think I would lean toward Molly.
That's how I feel right now.
[Cheers and applause] Every once in a while, I'm made to feel this way because of a performance that I'm watching, and it's that, man I love this show.
It's got such a soul - and a beating heart - It does.
and and I think that the rest of them don't.
Your feelings are real.
Your emotions are real.
- Yeah.
- That's a beautiful thing.
And I will always want to be a part of that, so just thank you for making me feel something.
That was That was a really very nice moment.
[Applause] And I love the fact that you guys have a connection.
Yeah, that was nice.
A kinship there that's very real, as well.
Selfishly, like, Justin, I was such a huge fan of yours.
I would probably go with Justin, but no one sings like Molly.
Right.
You know when it's you.
Congratulations to the both of you guys.
Yeah.
[Cheers and applause] So, I turned my chair for both of y'all.
And neither one of them picked you.
[Chuckles] [Laughs maniacally] Man, with that laugh and that hair, you really looked like the Heat Miser just then.
[Laughter] [Laughs maniacally] And then you had the Justin, your voice probably fit a little better into this song 'cause you go into your softer part of your voice, and your presence was was really big and and wide and deep.
Molly, it was crazy to hear her go from that hard-edge voice she has into that falsetto sound.
It was, like That still has rasp.
such a new, crazy s-sound that I'm not used to hearing, and and I was very impressed by that.
I would probably go with Molly.
Time for the big moment, but first, Kelly, tell us what you thought about the battle.
Your voices are completely different, but you both are so emotional.
It sounds vulnerable, and it just sounds real raw.
And, Molly, you have this crazy-cool Indigo Girls, like, Melissa Etheridge, Patty Griffin just greatness.
And, Justin, you have this untapped well that I think is just w-waiting to just burst out.
The time has come, if you're ready.
This is the hardest show ever.
Oh, my God.
Who is the winner of this battle? I-I don't know, Carson.
[Chuckles] Oh.
You're both so good.
Um I'm gonna go with my gut.
The winner of this battle is Justin.
[Cheers and applause] Justin, congratulations! You're moving on to the knockouts, representing Team Kelly Clarkson.
JUSTIN: I'm happy to continue on with this journey, and I am extremely excited to be working with Kelly for the knockouts.
Let me remind you, Molly's available to steal.
Molly, anything you want to say to your coach? Oh, Kelly, you're awesome.
Thank you so much.
You're so rad.
I-I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you, so thank you.
This is the worst part.
Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Molly Stevens! Thank you.
Thank you.
Molly, I love you.
KELLY: I not only love Molly as a singer.
I love her as a person.
That was really hard for me.
But Justin has that storyteller voice, but he also has this sweet falsetto that is very cool for a big male country singer.
DALY: Coming up This is Shawn.
our coaches and their superstar advisers prepare the artists for battle.
Yeah I don't get enough of you until the very end.
SHAWN: He's got an insane belt.
I think that's what you guys got to access.
Take me into your loving arms DALY: We got a steal! This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
Halfway through the battles.
Blake, how hard is it to watch these people that you've put together go at it from your team? It's fun to watch them sing together and know that they worked hard at it, and then at the end of the performance, you're like, "One of you has to go home.
" - It's terrible.
- How about you, Kelly? Is it hard to make a decision between two members of your own team? Yes, this is my first time doing the show, and I have a very eclectic team.
Like, they're all different, but it's hard.
But emotionally, because you're like mother hen.
I get devastated.
Looks like you got a little teary.
I did.
It is bad Well, and I think 'cause I've been one.
- And genuine.
- They're invested.
True.
Well, have fun in the battles, guys.
- Thank you.
- We'll see you out there.
All right.
DALY: Now Adam's next artists are about to find out who they'll be battling.
MIYA: In New York, I come from a family of law enforcement.
I used to work for NYPD as a police cadet, and I left that job because I wanted to sing.
Recently, I've been grinding with a funk band and just being a struggling New York City artist.
'Cause we got the kind of love In the blinds, I sang "Issues" by Julia Michaels.
Yeah My heart was, basically, coming out of my chest.
You happen to be doing a song by an artist that I just worked with who I think is an absolute genius.
I thought you were really amazing and you had all the control in the world.
I'm extra, extra appreciative of Adam, and he heard something special.
That's changed my life.
I smell sex and candy here Aah! [Laughs] Drew's voice, it's really melodic.
He has a great tone.
It has that soft rock type of feel.
Yeah! [Laughs] Well, I smell sex and candy I hope I can keep up with this guy.
He's really, really great.
Mama, this must be My dream DREW: Before "The Voice," I did have some success with a viral video of me playing guitar to a dog.
To date, the video has shy of 14 million views.
And then from there, I got hit up by a producer to record some music, so I ended up coming to L.
A.
Been here for three years now.
It's definitely a grind trying to make a name for yourself here, so I work as a bartender.
You sing the lights out without even really trying.
Immediately, you connect.
I see you as not potentially just the winner, but way far beyond.
I pick Adam.
Being here has allowed me to step out from behind the bar and onto a better stage.
I really want to show Adam that he made a really good decision and we can go far together.
- Aah! - Miya! [Both laugh] Miya She's an absolute powerhouse.
Her tone's super soulful.
For a female vocalist, she's got a very low voice.
To To go up against that is is gonna be a challenge.
Aah! Hello! [Laughs] I saw Julia Michaels! I was like, "Oh, my God, the girl who wrote the song and sang the song that I auditioned with is here before me.
We're all in plaid.
She's written for a ton of artists.
She's the perfect mentor that we could ask for.
Thank you so much for for feeling connected to that song enough to want to sing it.
Ah, thank you.
[Laughs] I know this is a pairing you may not have seen coming.
Yeah, like, what made you, like, pair us together? There's rock 'n' roll in both of you.
There's There's an edge to the both of you.
When you think about the song "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," it's a classic.
You know, it made sense.
It's really funny, actually.
The first time I ever sang in a band was with my buddies in the garage.
We recorded this song.
Wow.
Mama, take this badge off of me ADAM: I think that Drew has the kind of voice that can be on the radio.
Also has the kind of voice that could've been around 30 years ago.
I think it's very timeless.
That long black cloud is comin' down Down, down, down What makes Miya special is her range.
Door JULIA: The fact that she can go from the bottom of a range all the way to the top was really cool.
Yeah Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door ADAM: I want to change a little bit of the arrangement.
Dylan's version is Dylan's version.
Like, the Guns N' Roses version was really popular and that had a lot more energy.
'Cause, you know, Axl did some really cool melodic variations that were a little more exciting.
[Vocalizes] Like, there was more pizzazz.
Maybe just unleash it, go crazy, 'cause it does need energy.
For Miya, I just feel like I don't get enough of you until the very end.
Mm.
You have such a beautiful range and a beautiful tone up there, but I wanted to hear it the whole time.
Yeah.
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door JULIA: Drew and Miya I think it's gonna take them both trying to make it as unique as possible.
This one's gonna be a tough one to decide for Adam, 'cause they're both so different.
It's nice that you guys have your own identities within the song.
- The genius speaks.
- [Laughs] [As Axl Rose] Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door - Okay, could you - Whoa, whoa He does this.
Hey, hey, yeah MAN: Here we go.
Four, three I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's Door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Yeah ADAM: This is definitely a song that's gonna boil down to the performance and the urgency of it.
Every time they did it, it was better and better.
Actually, the most growth, I think, in this this duo than than anyone.
The end of that first chorus 'cause you end the first chorus.
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Yeah, okay, so Door Extend it Give me something there that's like a nice, powerful note, but not like a crazy run.
Okay.
When you go to falsetto, if you're gonna use it, do it purposefully so it sounds like you're not chickening out of a of a note.
Make it count.
Yeah, like, have it be a cho a choice.
It's a task to take this song and to turn it into something vibrant.
You guys rock.
I don't want Miya to have less power.
I don't want Drew to try to have too much power 'cause that's just not who they are.
If they can function and operate together and use their strength to lift each other, then it's gonna be perfect.
I'm so beyond happy.
But I have no clue who's gonna win this one.
[Cheers and applause] DALY: Which Team Adam vocalist will win this battle? Drew Cole! DREW: I moved to L.
A.
to play music, and I don't want to be a bartender the rest of my life.
When I hit the stage today, I'm gonna keep in mind that we're singing for our lives.
DALY: Miya Bass! [Cheers and applause] MIYA: I'm a struggling and starving New York artist.
This is literally my life and literally my dream.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back.
[Cheers and applause] Okay, pinky! The battle starts now.
Ooooh Ooooh Mama, take this badge off of me Mm I can't use it anymore It's gettin' dark, too dark to see Yeah! Mm I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door Hey! Yeah, yeah, yeah Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Yeah Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Mama, put my guns in the ground Yeah.
Ooh I can't shoot them Shoot them anymore, yeah That long black cloud is comin' down Comin' down Yes! I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's Door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Yeah, yeah Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Ohhh Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Ohhh I feel like I'm knockin' on heaven's door Ooooh [Cheers and applause] ALICIA: Nice! That was nice.
Yeah.
Hey! BLAKE: Didn't feel like a battle.
This felt like an incredible Grammy-ish type performance, you know? Thank you.
It did.
Whatever's happening to you right now, how emotional that must've been, you put all of that into your performance, too.
[Cheers and applause] Drew, I thought that was an obviously choice for you and musically and how you made it work.
And, Miya, your vision for it, how creative you were with the melody, but still honored the original, you guys both did incredible, but what Miya did, I'd probably be voting for her.
Aww, thank you, Blake.
Drew, I think that you're stellar.
You have one of those voices that's a storyteller vibe.
I love that.
Thank you.
And the freedom in how you perform, Miya, it's inspiring.
I am seriously regretting that I didn't turn for you in the blinds because I feel like I really [chuckles] screwed up.
It's funny, uh three of you screwed up, 'cause I was the only person that turned around for Miya - I know.
I just feel like that song - which is shocking! You all should be ashamed of yourselves.
I know.
It's on us.
It's on us.
ALICIA: Well, Drew and Miya I thought that was just beautiful to see two different interpretations of one timeless song.
So that was fantastic.
I agree with Blake.
I think, Drew, this definitely fit in your wheelhouse, and that was great to just see, but, Miya, this was totally your zone.
Million percent.
Yes, agreed.
Like, owned.
Good job, Miya.
[Laughs] Doesn't really matter what I think.
It only matters what your coach thinks.
I value all of your opinions, minus Blake.
[Laughter] [Cheers and applause] All right, Coaches.
Adam.
The two of you kind of encapsulate all that I love about music.
The style, who you are as vocalists, what you're able to both do together.
This is your wheelhouse, both of you.
Like, to me, the best collaborations and the best things are the ones that feel the most natural.
So, like, congratulations on making this, really, a special moment and making me very proud.
[Cheers and applause] Adam, the time has come.
Who is the winner of this battle? You both did an 11 out of 10 here.
[Applause] I'm gonna make my choice based on strictly a good feeling that I have.
There's just something about this person that makes me feel like I need to be connected to them and continue on.
The winner of this battle is Drew.
Drew Cole moves on to the knockouts.
Congratulations.
[Cheers and applause] Drew's voice It's contemporary and it's modern, but it also feels old-school, too.
Great job.
Great job.
ADAM: His taste is similar to mine, so I think we're just gonna work together really, really well.
ALICIA: Yeah! Coaches, let me remind you that Miya is available to steal.
Miya, anything you want to say to your coach? [Voice breaking] Thank you so much for everything, and it was because of you, when you turned your chair for me that I made it this far.
So thank you.
Thank you to everybody.
[Cheers and applause] That is a steal! Oh! Stolen.
Amazing.
Alicia Keys steals Miya! And Miya's stunned! [Laughs] Miya, congratulations.
Thank you so much.
I've been waiting and I've been waiting and I've been waiting, and then here you come, with this magnificent queenliness from Queens.
Hey! Okay? There's an edge in you that we can explore all kinds of, like, places that would be unexpected, and it's totally unlike anything that I have right now on my team.
Aww.
And I'm ecstatic! - Thank you so much! Oh, my God.
- Yeah! Oh.
Look what we did.
Look what we did.
It was phenomenal working with Adam.
He's amazing.
He's brilliant.
And now I'm super excited to work with Alicia now.
- So happy for you.
- Thank you.
- Yes.
- Thank you, guys.
- See you in a minute.
- So good.
DALY: Congratulations, Miya Bass, stolen by Alicia Keys! I think I can take her to just another stratosphere.
I think I think you you just have to go super out, like Yeah, we can go other way.
super the other way.
Other direction.
Yeah, don't don't give her any standard It's not R&B.
It's, like, total, like Rock 'n' roll.
opposite.
I love it.
That's the vibe.
That's actually what worked - That's what works for her best just now.
- with this.
Yeah.
So, that was amazing.
Please go that direction with her.
That's what we're gonna do.
DALY: Coming up I got no DALY: showstopping performances Place your head on my beating heart DALY: lead to impossible decisions.
I love both of you guys.
I just got to make a gut decision.
That was really electric, really alive.
I would be stealing you if you were up for grabs.
[Cheers and applause] Whoo! This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
So, how's Alicia's team? 'Cause mine's pretty strong.
I think she thinks she has a stronger team.
Oh, look who's here.
Alicia Keys.
You guys talking about me again? Talking trash.
You talking about how amazing my team is? I've got the show won already, actually.
I take young talent and coach them into the winner's circle.
It just sounds like this to me.
[Stammering] Actually, oftentime he speaks, I think he's out of breath.
- Are you out of breath? - Yeah, it's like Sasquatch.
Yeah, when you came in here, it took my breath away.
Breathless.
Yeah.
See that, kids at home? I'm coaching you right now.
DALY: Let's meet Blake's battle pairing Jordan Kirkdorffer and Wilkes.
Hey.
Let's do it.
Here we go.
Well, this is gonna be something else.
- Yeah, it's gonna be a blast.
- [Laughs] - I was a little surprised.
- That's what I was, too.
I thought I was gonna be paired with a girl.
WOMAN: Morning, Jordan.
JORDAN: Even though I love my job as an accountant, music is my passion, and it's something that's always driven me.
I sing now, and I sing at church, but to be able to do that on a big stage like "The Voice," that's just a crazy thought.
Even though And I don't tell you all the time When I saw that Blake turned You're different, and you're special.
I'm gonna pick Blake.
my confidence just skyrocketed.
I feel like hopefully I can use that in the battle rounds and hopefully further.
WILKES: I've been working in music for 17 years and the past few years as a country songwriter.
But before "The Voice," I was a stay-at-home dad.
I have a 7-year-old daughter named Linley.
CHELSEY: My husband, he does everything.
I mean, he changed her first diaper in the hospital.
[Chuckles] [Laughter] With one headlight Feels good to be here.
Feels surreal, but no denying how amazing it was.
There's a wide-open lane for somebody that sounds like you on my team.
I'm a fan.
I'm gonna pick Blake.
Yes! Because of my country roots, I could see myself easily connecting with Blake.
- [Sighs] - Yeah! Hey! You gotta meet my friend Trace Adkins.
Hi, Trace.
There's Trace Adkins, huge country music singer.
- Wilkes, how are you? - Yes, sir.
JORDAN: He is what country music is.
For me growing up, he was that timeless voice for country music.
Jordan and Wilkes are gonna be singing "Nobody To Blame" by Chris Stapleton.
She broke all my fishin' rods Put my guns in hock Threw my clothes out in the yard This song has a kind of a rock edge to it, so this is definitely in Wilkes' wheelhouse.
And I got nobody to blame Jordan really fits in with what we hear in in country music today on the radio.
He sounds like the new generation.
But me Cool.
Jordan, I don't want you to try to become what Chris is, and I hear you trying to put in a growl here and there, and I think there's got to be a way for you to own this song with your sound, so - Yeah.
- I want you to be you.
- Yeah.
- "Got nobody to blame but me.
" The first time you sang that, you hit a lick right there that that was you.
- Okay.
- That was your lick.
To me, that line was my favorite line that you sang.
The hardest thing for me is finding my voice in this song and not trying to outsing Wilkes or hit the notes that he's hitting.
And I got no Wilkes has been doing this for a while, and he's got that kind of confidence that doesn't have to try too hard.
- What was that note? - I know.
[Chuckling] God! - That was incredible.
- High five.
Wilkes, this is in your wheelhouse, but I wouldn't get that comfortable with it.
I would continue to work on it, because I've seen this so many times, where somebody has a song that they nail it in this part of the show, and the other person has to work on it harder, but they end up working on it so much, - they're incredible.
- Yeah.
Being a songwriter, I've known about Stapleton for a while.
I know his lane of music, but Jordan's voice is real smooth, and he doesn't jump all over the place.
So I'm definitely gonna need to bring my absolute best.
Me Country music has to keep re-inventing itself, and the way it does that is people like you bringing in your ideas.
Then sometimes it's the right time for something to happen, like Chris Stapleton.
I've been listening to Chris Stapleton sing for 15 years, and only in the last three or four years has the rest of the world discovered him.
Well, cool, you guys.
I'll see you at the stage rehearsal.
Wilkes is very conversational, and that's something that you can't teach people.
And Jordan, he's got a really good range, good control.
I thought that would be the toughest call for Blake, because it doesn't seem to be a clear winner between those two.
Well done.
That's a tough one.
- I don't envy you that.
- Yeah.
Two good guys, two good singers.
You're getting a hug.
One hug.
Thank you.
All right, then.
God.
Stop! [Laughs] I know right where Whoo! I went wrong BLAKE: Our vocal coach has been working on this show since day one.
It's so cool having her here.
Turned my life into this I got to say, since band rehearsal, Wilkes is definitely in his wheelhouse.
He's only gotten better, but Jordan has really taken those extra few steps to make this work for his lane in country music.
Wow.
When you guys do it together, you had control, - but your "nobody to blame" - Mm-hmm.
- the stand-alone one - That The very end? kind of got away from you a little bit.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- I would just watch that.
From our rehearsal to now, to step into that lane that's not really your lane - Mm-hmm.
- good job of doing that.
- Thank you.
- And you're doing, by the way, a good job of not making it seem like, "This is what I do.
" You know what I mean? - Yeah.
- It's You're invested in it.
Even though you're asleep right now I am.
when you're performing, you're really in.
Yeah.
I only wake up when after the after the count-off.
- When you hear music.
- It's one, two, three, four, and I go [Strums guitar] [Laughs] I got no It's definitely gonna be a tough decision for me.
This is one of the ones where one of these other coaches could end up stealing one of my better artists out of this battle.
- Ya fixed it.
- That felt really good.
I don't know what you did, but it works.
- That was good.
- Thanks, Blake.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles at Universal Studios Hollywood.
[Cheers and applause] This battle starts right now.
She took down the photograph Of our wedding day Ripped it down the middle Then threw my half away And I got nobody to blame but me Oh, I got nobody to blame but me She broke all my fishin' rods Put my guns in hock And threw my clothes out in the yard And changed out all the locks And I got nobody to blame but me I got nobody to blame but me Whoo! I got nobody to blame But me [Cheers and applause] Whoo! They did it! Whoa! Oh, my gosh! I love y'all! Thank you.
Jordan, your style is so on point.
You're moving around the stage.
Wilkes, you're, like, way more low key, like, "I'm gonna make you come to me.
" You know, you just stand there, like, "I got this.
" It's, like, so cool.
You have this, like that kind of cool vibe, and if I were gonna have to pick one [Sighs] - Um, I don't know, man.
- That's no help.
You're in breach of your contract right now.
I know.
I know.
I just realized this wasn't Kelly's battle.
I know! I'm so excited for you! [Laughter] You're not even on my team.
[Cheers and applause] That was really electric, really alive.
Jordan, I loved your energy.
Your voice was more pure, more sweet, but definitely powerful.
Wilkes was a little more husky, more raw, which I, personally, gravitate to.
So, I would choose Wilkes for this one, but I really thought that - both of you guys had a your own lane.
- KELLY: So cool.
Well, thanks for at least doing your job, Alicia.
- Oh, my God! - Thank you.
Here's the thing, Jordan, is that Wilkes is one of my favorites in the competition.
It's kind of a combination of all the stuff you do, man your presence, just the way you do it, how you do it.
I'm just a huge fan of this guy, but you're a fantastic singer, too, Jordan.
Thanks, Adam.
[Cheers and applause] DALY: Thank you, Coaches.
Blake, you got the final decision.
What'd you think? If I had the ability to express myself the way that Kelly does, I I would do it.
I just You'd have a heart attack.
[Laughter] Great job.
You guys worked your butts off on that, and I'm glad that this year, we got a chance to get behind the scenes and watch you guys rehearse in here.
That was a new experience, and I got to see a couple last-minute things that we talked about with you, Jordan, which by the way, man, you nailed it tonight, man.
- Thank you.
- I mean, you nailed it.
It was so good.
JORDAN: Appreciate it.
The energy that that you bring to the stage, it's unbelievable.
And, Wilkes the same kind of energy.
He just uses it in a different way.
And in fact, we joked Like, right now, I'm not sure if he's awake right now.
I'm definitely asleep right now.
Like, literally.
I don't hear a word you're saying.
[Laughter] But then when the music starts, like, all of a sudden, he comes alive.
It's crazy.
You guys both delivered a perfect performance.
That's all we wanted.
[Cheers and applause] Another five.
Yeah.
[Chuckles] And they're both so cute.
They're cute, too.
This is not "The Dating Game.
" It's "The Voice.
" What are you talking about? I'm so sad.
I wish I had a steal.
I'm excited.
I don't care.
Blake, who is the winner of this battle? I love both of you guys.
I just got to make a gut decision here, what fits in my team.
Uh The winner of this battle is Wilkes.
Wilkes, congratulations.
You're moving on to the knockouts, representing Team Blake Shelton.
Wilkes has that "rough around the edges" type thing that's hard to come by, and I want a chance to work with somebody that has that sound.
DALY: Coaches, let me remind you, Jordan's available to steal.
Jordan, anything you'd like to say to your coach? Blake, you pushed me and challenged me, and I can't thank you enough for that, so thank you.
- Yes, sir.
- DALY: Give it up for Jordan Kirkdorffer, - ladies and gentlemen! - Good job, man! So good.
ALICIA: Jordan has a great voice, but something about me is looking for a female artist this time.
When I hear it, I'm gonna know it, and I'm gonna push it.
He's cute.
They were so cute.
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door DALY: Stream tonight's battle songs only on Apple Music Don't do me like that DALY: or buy them on iTunes.
Baby, baby, baby Oh, oh, oh, ohhh This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the battles.
Let's check in on Alicia and her adviser, Shawn Mendes.
I love these artists, man.
They're really interesting and have different vibes.
Yeah, and they're young.
We got a couple of young ones, too.
Super young.
And they have different worlds inside of them, so I'm excited for you to help me just help bring the best out of them.
Sounds perfect.
Let's do it.
- How are you? - Good.
- How you feeling? - I'm excited.
JACLYN: I'm battling Britton.
He has such a powerful voice, and just competing with that is kind of scary.
- I'm nervous, too.
- [Laughs] Yeah, well, that's that's natural.
But a good nervous.
Like, I'm grateful that it's me and you.
BRITTON: Jaclyn has a really unique voice, and she's one of my good friends.
I'm terrified.
I'm excited.
And I can't deal with more than one emotion at one time, so I'm freaking out.
I'd like to think I'm a fun guy.
Anything I can do to make people laugh, I just do.
Sanford's a very sports-oriented town.
I'm kind of on the outside of everything 'cause I don't play sports.
Music gave me the sense of belonging that I didn't feel like I had.
I've been saved So, it means the world to me to have a shot like "The Voice.
" By a woman Aw, man, I got so blocked.
You are so intense.
I go on emotion.
And I'd love to help you really bring that out for people to be moved.
Damn, you're good.
- I pick Alicia! - Yeah! BRITTON: I'm a huge Alicia fan, so it's gonna be absolutely mind-blowing getting to work with her.
I'm homeschooled, so I got to graduate early.
I really wanted to focus on music more, and my community is very supportive.
When I wanted to make an EP with a crowd-funding platform, we were able to get all the money we needed, so I want to make my community proud.
Take my hand Take my whole life, too While you were singing, I pictured myself, riding a unicorn, that the kind that has, like, wings.
That's the vibe I was trying to give.
It's really special that you just showed everybody that you can be simple and pure.
JACLYN: Alicia enchanted me with the way she spoke.
- Alicia.
- All right! I'm so excited to work with Alicia.
I'm just looking forward to soaking up everything I can.
[Applause] - Hi.
- Hello.
Jaclyn, Britton.
This is Shawn.
How are you? Nice to meet you.
How you doing? JACLYN: Alicia brought in Shawn Mendes.
My best friend is gonna be so upset.
She wants to marry him, basically.
[Laughs] SHAWN: I know you guys are the youngest, so I can imagine being in your position right now, like, a little nerve-racking, but remember, we're singers, too, and we know what it's like to be behind the mike, so just do your thing and have fun.
That's a nice start.
Look at you.
- Yeah.
- You're just all good.
When your legs don't work like they used to ALICIA: Britton and Jaclyn are doing "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran 'cause I felt like they both had unique styles and that this singer/songwriter vibe would really fit them both well.
- And, darling, I will - Yeah! Britton has this wisdom in his voice that's really honest, and when you hear him sing, it's just pure singing.
Baby, my heart Jaclyn has a very beautiful style, too.
Hers is more pure, but there's something about that simplicity and purity that is really honest.
Jaclyn, be conscious that we can understand what you're saying.
Okay.
Especially the line about "My heart could still fall as hard at 23.
" Okay.
I never even knew that's what he said, actually.
[Laughs] You did a couple of these, like, little high falsetto breaky things.
It's so cool and unique a-and kind of, like, let that shine.
Darling, I Just, like, kind of fall.
- It might feel really nice.
- Yeah.
Baby, my heart could still fall SHAWN: Jaclyn had this beautiful tone up in that falsetto, but she was scared to do it.
If Jaclyn accesses what's special about her, I think she's a monster, in a good way.
[Chuckles] If you think about what's going on and smile - Oh, yeah, I'm crazy nervous.
- No, no, it's cool.
No, no.
I know.
I'm the same way.
It, for some reason, makes your whole body calm down.
Yeah.
And you just feel a lot more comfortable, and and it kind of flows out of you.
They were like, "Just smile and it'll come out," and I was like And when you switch to that melody - Mm-hmm.
- I know you feel like you can't reach it, but you can.
I would suggest pushing down in your belly area.
Baby, now I really need to just drill the song in my head so I can get confidence in myself.
So, that's a pretty high register, and he's got an insane belt.
I think that's what you guys got to access.
I think it just gives you guys a chance to have your own moment.
- Mm-hmm.
- And that's nice.
When you guys smiled at each other, magic.
Yeah, that was that was magic.
Gonna have everybody hoping you guys are dating.
[Laughter] MAN: All right, guys, we'll do one more fast.
Stand by.
[Indistinct chatter] Show me the positions you're in in for me, please.
JACLYN: I'm really excited to show Alicia what we're capable of.
I'm also nervous just because there's a lot at stake.
Britton has a very powerful voice, and I just have to remember to shine in my moments and let him shine in his moments.
MAN: Here we go.
So, wish me luck.
So, honey, now Britton and Jaclyn, I think it feels really, really in the right place.
Jaclyn, she's comfortable with her voice and her style and where she is, and I think she's really owning it.
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars ALICIA: Britton also sounds great, and they really complement each other well because they're different.
I mean, I think the point of this is very intimate and very stripped back, and that it should feel organic.
I'm gonna make this decision by who makes it their own and who is really ready for the next step.
It's gonna be beautiful.
- Thank you.
- This works really well.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back.
[Cheers and applause] Which young Team Alicia pop vocalist will win this battle? Will it be an 18-year-old from North Carolina? Britton Buchanan! BRITTON: It's the day of the battle, and I'm trying to breathe, just trying to remain chill.
Come on, Britton! I just need to sing like I've never sung before to prove to Alicia that I need to be on her team.
DALY: Or the 16-year-old from California? Jaclyn Lovey! JACLYN: I'm 16, and I worked extra hard just so I could graduate and pursue music.
This is such a huge chance for me to continue as a singer, which is what I want to be.
Whoo! Come on, Jaclyn! That's a cute outfit.
This battle begins right now.
When your legs don't work like they used to before - And I can't sweep you off of your feet - Wow, he's cute.
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love? Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks? 'Cause, darling, I will Yes! Be loving you till we're 70 Yay! And, baby, my heart Could still fall as hard at 23 I'm thinking 'bout how People fall in love in mysterious ways Maybe just a touch of a hand Me, I fall in love with you every single day I just wanna tell you I am So, honey, now Take me into your loving arms Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars Place your head on my beating heart Yeah! I'm thinking out loud Baby, now Take me into your loving arms, baby Whoo! Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars Oh, darlin' Place your head on my beating heart Yeah! I'm thinking out loud, baby We found love right where we are Oh, baby We found love right where we are [Cheers and applause] Whoo! Whoo! - Yeah! - Hi, guys.
- Hi.
- Hey.
All right, look, Tweedledum over there, literally, he blocked me from obtaining you, young Britton.
Thank you very much.
- Thank you, guys.
- That's Thank you.
It's awesome.
Because I wanted to do what was right for this young man.
Which was not And his career! Which was not get him on your team.
And look at this match made in heaven now.
A match made in heaven by a man sent from Hell.
[Laughter] It's like trying to keep your kid from dating somebody that you know is bad news, right? I took one for the team for you, Britton.
[Laughter] Someday, you'll thank me.
You're just a badass dude, and I'm so sad I didn't get a chance to work with you.
I blame Blake entirely.
Jaclyn, that was, like, the sweetest thing.
- Mm-hmm.
- It was so genuine.
You are a revelation to me, as well, because you really have something special.
So, it was a great performance.
It was really awesome.
Both you guys did a great job.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you so much.
[Cheers and applause] Let me just say to both of you, your singing and your performance and your stage presence is timeless.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you.
You can't go wrong either way.
Britton, I think that you're an insane vocalist.
Thank you.
But I think we're really underestimating Jaclyn.
You have this incredible Kacey Musgraves meets Eva Cassidy, like Thank you so much.
A little bit of, like, singer/songwriter country, but it's got this really classic sound about you, too, that's, like, effortless, angelic falsetto.
And if I had a steal, I would be stealing you, if you were up for grabs.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I appreciate it.
DALY: Thank you, Coaches.
Alicia, give us some thoughts.
I am so proud of both of you.
Britton, you're only 18 years old, but you have such a lived-in voice.
Thank you.
I think that's what is something that's just so powerful.
You were far better than ever any rehearsal today.
Thank you.
Thanks.
Which means that under pressure, you become even better.
And, Jaclyn, I am a fan of your voice.
- Thank you.
- You make people feel that there's a sweetness in the world that sometimes, I think, we forget actually exists.
And you look stunning.
She looks like Julia Roberts' daughter.
Wow.
They say that about me, too, Jaclyn.
[Laughter] It's hard.
It's so hard.
It's my cross to bear.
It's fine.
I love you.
You, as a 16-year-old, completely own who you are.
I loved it with all my heart, so congratulations both.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Who is the winner of this battle? The winner of this battle is Britton.
Britton, congratulations.
You're moving on to the knockouts, representing Alicia Keys.
ALICIA: I had to go with Britton because he has this special thing.
He's only 18, and he has all that up in him.
Can you imagine two years from now? It's ridiculous.
We're gonna kill them.
- Thank you.
- Awesome.
He is a force to be reckoned with.
Don't forget Britton.
Yeah! This is just so surreal to me right now.
It's crazy.
[Sighs] Coaches, let me remind you, Jaclyn is available to steal.
Jaclyn, anything you'd like to say to your coach? I just wanted to thank you so much.
You've taught me so many things, and I'm just thankful for the opportunity.
Thank you.
Give it up for Jaclyn Lovey, everybody! Jaclyn! [Cheers and applause] We've got a steal! That's crazy.
I'm so happy for her.
DALY: Blake Shelton! [Laughs] You're not leaving here, Jaclyn.
She does remind me of, like, a young Cher, and what I mean by that is the workhorse up there, the person that was singing all that upper stuff.
Jaclyn is freakin' awesome.
I do, too.
There's no way she's going home.
Thank you so much.
[Cheers and applause] DALY: Give it up for Jaclyn Lovey, now in the knockouts, representing Team Blake Shelton! I am so excited.
I'm freaking out.
I don't even I don't even know what to feel.
I You're so good, girl.
Thank you.
I am so grateful that he gave me the chance.
I can't believe you're on my team! I'm so excited to be on Team Blake.
[Laughs] Yee-haw! Oh, the country's coming out.
Are you okay? Do you need a drink of water? Yeah, I'll be fine.
[Laughs]
