Top Shot (2010) s04e09 Episode Script

The Longest Shot

Previously on "Top Shot" You guys ran away from a challenge today.
Turmoil on the blue team leads to bad blood Most of these guns I have mastered them.
We're all confident.
He takes it above that he's cocky.
While red team unity results in winning Red team wins! We just really got whomped.
I looked to my left expecting will to man up.
He doesn't.
The two people that I was thinking was you and Greg.
I strongly disagree with the way the blue team meeting went today.
Greg is voted into the elimination challenge for the third time.
But he survives, sending Terry home.
I was like, "wow, he's done it again.
" There are shots that changed history feats of legendary skill and extreme precision.
Now 16 of today's best marksmen have been chosen.
They come from all over the country and from all walks of life.
Amateurs and professionals, military, recreation, and exhibition shooters.
Each shows the timeless skills of a true marksman not just with one weapon, with any weapon.
They will compete in a series of challenges until only one remains, to claim the $100,000 prize and the title of "Top Shot.
" welcome back! Greg's $2,000 bonus! I've been sent to elimination three times now.
If I keep going, I'm gonna do the best I can to come back to this house every time.
You earned your way back once again.
All right.
- Chee.
- Yes? Mm.
Mm.
Chee's a nice guy.
We are very good friends.
We talk a lot.
You're so funny.
It's nice to feel comfortable and enjoy that company.
We get along very good.
Gaby's just a very kind person.
I think that I'm more attracted to that kindness than anything else.
Gaby is definitely someone I could be more than friends with, perhaps in another place or another time.
Oh, my God.
We're walking up to the practice session, and we see a big, giant rifle.
Good morning, marksmen.
Good morning.
The field is down to eight.
Five from the red team and three from the blue.
Congratulations.
You've all made it to the individual portion of this competition.
Yes! That's what I'm talking about.
And a special shout-out to Gaby, our first female ever to make it this far on "Top Shot.
" Congratulations.
This is an honor.
You know, making women and girls proud.
It's a very nice achievement for me definitely.
I know you've been waiting for these.
You earned them, man.
Yeah.
That feels good.
We're going to green shirts, and I'm thinking I'm excited.
This is sexy.
And if I leave here, it's gonna be because of my own performance or non-performance.
And that's what I'm really looking forward to.
On "Top Shot," those green jerseys mean one thing the entire ball game just changed starting right now.
And it begins with the longest-range rifle you will fire in this competition, or just about anywhere else for that matter The accuracy international ax .
338 sniper rifle.
This is the cruise missile of firearms, built for covering long distances and taking the enemy by surprise.
It fires the devastating .
338 Lapua Magnum cartridge, which, due to its accuracy and high performance, many consider to be the finest ever.
That gun sure is sexy, so I want to get behind it.
That's a good-looking ride, isn't it? Yes, it is.
The accuracy international .
338 Lapua is an iconic figure.
The gun's actually got the world record for longest confirmed kill in a theater of combat.
To help you with this weapon, we're bringing back two former "Top Shot" contestants.
Both have demonstrated very impressive long-range-shooting skills.
Kelly Bachand and George Reinas.
Good morning, fellas good morning, Colby.
What's up, big George? What's happening? Hi, Kelly.
How's it going? Welcome back.
Thanks.
Kelly Bachand is the youngest person and the first american to win the long-range rifle canadian national championship.
Big George is a certified military, civilian, and SWAT sniper instructor, former air force sniper, and holds several national sniper titles.
I know George Reinas personally.
We were stationed together in Kuwait for six months.
I was happy to see him.
For practice, you'll be shooting at a 20-inch target Have fun.
I'll see you guys at the individual challenge tomorrow.
Thank you.
Just lay right into it.
Get as straight as you possibly can.
Looking good.
George went all over the fundamentals with me about staying low to the ground, really only having two points of contact to the weapon.
Kelly got more into the wind.
Try to see if you can see some of the mirage out there.
Yes.
And try to decide what direction it's going, okay? Okay.
It's looking to me right to left.
Wind is essentially invisible, but you can observe its behavior in mirage in heat waves that move across the ground or through the air.
You can also see wind as it moves vegetation, flags, and the bullet.
Send it.
Dead center for elevation.
You're about four inches to the left.
I don't have any practice with this style of shooting.
We got a good hit.
Dead center.
And I was hitting my target, and Kelly and George they had me dialed in.
We've got a 3:00 to 9:00 mirage right now going at about five Miles per hour.
Okay.
Sounds like you might have done this before.
I actually shoot in competition at 1,000-yard ranges with orange sights.
But I haven't shot a lot of scope guns.
Nice and slow squeeze to the rear.
All right.
Perfect.
That's a pretty good first shot.
Chris' first shot without any wind call from me was almost exactly dead center.
So, watching Chris, I quickly decided that, you know, he's kind of a natural at this.
Back it off.
Let's go.
Dead center? Dead center.
We got a winner.
I've never shot a rifle like this.
And I have never shot 750 yards.
Work it.
Work it.
Let's go.
Gaby had little to no long-range experience.
Send it.
One more again.
But she did one thing really great.
I think she was probably the best out of everyone at doing this was staying consistent.
I'll bet you that was about a three-inch group.
Money.
Gaby goes up there and she's able to hit 3 shots within 3 inches of each other at 750 yards, which is damn near perfect.
Who wants to know who shot the closest groups? We do know.
It's been a pleasure shooting with you.
Good luck tomorrow.
Thank you very much.
Thanks, guys.
Where's the target? All the way out there that little white square.
Oh, wow.
We see the platform and the gun's resting on the sand bags.
And then out in the distance we see this target, and it is way out there.
It looks like I'm shooting in California, and that target's in Nevada.
I mean, it is so far out there, you can barely make it out.
Good morning, marksmen.
Good morning.
Good morning, Colby.
Throughout the individual portion of this competition, you are gonna have to perform feats of marksmanship that will truly set you above and beyond even the most skilled shooters in the world.
And there is one test we use to see who has what it takes to be Top Shot the long shot.
You've done it at 1,000 yards with a stationary target.
We've shot at a moving target So, what is the twist gonna be this season? How about a target set out at 1,500 yards? Yes.
Holy smokes.
Yes.
I can't believe that that's really what they expect us to do today.
It'll be a significant challenge.
You heard me right That is nearly one mile.
As if you guys needed any more pressure, the first individual challenge is also going to be an elimination challenge.
Whoever comes in last is headed home right now.
Oh, snap.
It's shoot now or go home.
I'm just thinking in my mind, "this is gonna get ugly.
" there is a 30-inch target.
On my signal, the clock begins ticking.
You'll each have to hit the target within 10 minutes or 20 rounds, whichever comes first.
You hit the target, the clock stops, that's your time.
Finish in the top four, you're safe and you're moving on.
Finish five through seven, and you're eligible to be sent to the elimination challenge.
And if you finish last, you are headed home.
Wow.
We drew names randomly to see who was gonna start things off.
Gary, you're the man.
Step up to the firing line.
I've been the anchor several times, but I've never gone first.
I am definitely nervous about that.
You know, all eyes are gonna be on me, and I'm gonna set the tone for this entire competition.
The rest of you guys, so that this isn't unfair, we're gonna have you step away from the course until it is your turn to shoot.
Coming up on "Top Shot" Go! It's a race.
I am going as fast as I can.
Wow.
That was quick.
That's it! Gary, to stay in the competition, you're gonna have to make the longest shot ever in the history of "Top Shot" Remember, the first four shooters with the fastest times stay to shoot another day.
Shooters five through seven are eligible for the elimination challenge, and the shooter with the slowest time is out of the competition.
Go! Every shot I had, I could see the dust clouds behind it.
A little left.
So, I just kept dialing in, racking round after round in that chamber until I was closer and closer and closer.
That does it! Nice shot.
Gary, you took out your target in 1 minute, 12 1/2 seconds.
Take a spot on the left side of the bench over there.
Good shooting.
I was thrilled.
And I was really happy to set myself on that bench at the number-one spot.
All right, let's bring in our second shooter, Chris Cheng.
Go! I see that the wind is going left to right, and so I aim left and dead level with the target.
Chris sends his first round downrange.
I am high and to the right, so I need to drop down and I need to go even farther left.
And I'm already aiming off of the target.
Chris missing on his first shot.
Chris is on his second shot, walking it in.
Right side.
That hit it! Good job, Chris.
Chris, you hit the target in 2 minutes, 3.
3 seconds.
It puts you in second place.
Have a seat over there by Gary.
At this point, I'm not feeling too confident about my time and whether it's really gonna hold up.
Good job.
And now I'm in the hot seat and sweating it out.
William is our next shooter.
Go! William taking some time to get his first shot off.
I look at the mirage at about 500 yards, I look at the mirage about 800 yards, and then I go all the way down to 1,500 yards.
Looks like I see a left-to-right wind.
William's first shot is a miss.
I'm thinking, "I can't be last.
"I want to be able to fight all the way to the end, so I'm gonna make this shot.
" That's it! Good job, William.
Wow.
William, it took you to take out your target.
That puts you in second place.
Good job, buddy.
Nice work.
Thank you.
All right, Augie's the next shooter.
The last time that we had an immediate elimination, it was with a rifle, and I came in first with that.
Get them, augie.
All right, augie.
That gives me confidence going into this challenge, but it's a completely different weapon system.
And it's also 1,300 yards further, so, I mean, I'm gonna have to make a good shot.
Go! Augie very quick on the accuracy international.
Second shot misses for augie.
That's it! Whoo! Damn right, baby! That's 1,500 yards.
Wow.
That was quick.
Very fast, augie Puts you in first place.
I keep getting pushed back and pushed back, and I'm getting really concerned at this point.
Greg, take your position on the shooting platform.
Get them, Greg.
Littlejohn's had some mixed performance throughout the competition.
Go! I'm kind of hoping maybe Littlejohn, with the pressure, that maybe I'll be saved from the hot seat.
Misses on his first shot.
Second shot is a miss.
It's a race.
I am going as fast as I can to hit this target.
That hits it! Eight shots.
And finally, on my eighth shot, I center-punched it.
Greg, you hit your target in 1 minute, 22.
5 seconds.
Good enough for third place.
Nice shooting.
Yeah, buddy.
So, Chris, what this means at this point, you are no longer safe.
So, based on how these last three shooters perform, you will either be eligible for nomination to compete in the elimination challenge, or you'll be sent home.
All right.
I'm hoping another shooter does worse than I do because I do not want to be eliminated today.
Gaby is up.
Well, it's definitely not an easy shot.
Go! I'm gonna apply what I learned yesterday and do my best.
But I must hit the target.
Four shots downrange.
Gaby still hasn't hit the target.
About the fifth shot, I see that I didn't hit my target yet.
I'm, like, kind of feel frustrated.
Gabby shooting high, then starts shooting right.
It was taking me time to try to figure it out how many inches, how many feet I have to move my point of aim, you know, to hit the target.
That hits it! Gaby relieved.
Oh, my God.
That was the best.
The best feeling.
Well, Gaby, you got it done in 2 minutes, 22 seconds.
That puts you in last place, okay? Take a spot over there by Chris.
We got two more shooters left.
I was able to relax a little bit.
I'm now really anxious for Gaby, though, because I don't want her to go home either.
Kyle's the next shooter.
Go! Based on the flag that's downrange, I see the wind is blowing from 5:00 to 11:00, so I did my best guess and I pressed off that first shot.
Nothing happened.
As embarrassed as I was, knowing I had just cost myself a good deal of time, I just racked the action as fast as I could, got back down into the gun, picked up the same sight picture.
After I fired the third shot, I felt like I was getting really close.
Send it.
That hits it! Four shots downrange, and Kyle connects.
Kyle, you hit your target in 1 minute, 35 seconds.
Puts you in fifth place.
Okay.
I felt great that I had hit the thing at all.
That was the best shot I'd ever made in my life.
Time for our final shooter, Chee kwan.
Good luck, Chee.
Good luck, buddy.
Thanks, bud.
Thank you.
Chee comes up to shoot, but to my side is Gaby.
And she is in the hot seat.
And Chee and Gaby have become really good friends throughout this competition.
And I like them both, but one of them's going home.
Go! Chee hits it on his third shot! After hitting the target, I was pretty excited because that was the first exploding target I've ever got a chance to shoot at.
So, definitely watching it go kaboom was very awesome for me.
Chee turns around.
He's got a big, beaming look on his face.
He's feeling great about his performance, as he should.
He's a great marksman.
And then Colby gives him the news.
Chee, impressive with the .
338 today.
You hit your target in 55.
4 seconds good enough for second place.
Take your spot over there in between augie and Gary.
And I was about to crack a joke at augie 'cause this is the second time he's bean me at something like this.
You beat me again, Mr.
augie? Nice.
Very nice.
Very nice, brother.
Then, you know, I see Gaby at the very end and I realized what that means.
Augie, Chee, Gary, and Greg, congratulations.
All four of you guys are safe.
You are moving on in this competition.
Gaby.
I really hate to be the one saying this, but you came in last, which means you have fired your last shot.
You've been eliminated from "top shot.
" Take a few minutes, say goodbye to these guys before you head out.
What it boils down to, is, you know, I shot, pretty much, Gaby out of this competition, I'm saying goodbye to everybody.
You got the green shirt.
The last person that said bye was Chee.
I'm sorry.
When we hugged, I didn't say anything just because I wanted him to keep focused.
And it's not gonna be easy, but I know he can do it.
I love you guys.
Hold your head high.
I love you.
Good luck.
The hardest thing of going home now it's probably left things unfinished.
That's life.
Certain things go how you want them to go.
And others just not.
Coming up on "Top Shot" Me and Chris.
It is what it is.
"I see exactly where we are.
" What comes around goes around.
Closest to the bull's-eye is safe.
Nice.
After Gaby left, that left only seven people in this lineup.
Only three of us will be eligible to go to nomination for elimination.
It's obvious in my mind that the two worst performers should be the two who go to elimination.
If we just look at today's challenge, it's me and Chris.
I was thinking, "well, I think we should have a little bit more conversation about this.
" Me and Chris.
I'll shoot yours.
You shoot mine.
The rest of you guys can work it out.
But these conversations have a mind of their own sometimes.
And so, it was a very quick conversation, and that was that.
It is what it is.
Welcome back to the nomination range, fellas.
Chris, Kyle, William, you are the only three eligible.
And two of you will be competing in the elimination challenge.
So, William, now that we're in the individual stage of this competition, there's no longer a team and a team's performance that you can hide behind.
As a shooter, does that help you? As for me personally, Colby, I think it helps me.
I think that if I can just kind of be middle of the road and perform, you know, adequately, I think that the best shooters are gonna come to the top and make it to the end of this thing.
When will made his "middle of the road" comment, that definitely hit a nerve with me.
I don't think that's the right attitude of a winner and of a Top Shot.
Gary, you gunning for middle of the road? I'm gunning for Top Shot.
All right.
Let's get started.
Gary, you'll be the first to vote.
One vote for Kyle.
William, you're up.
Nice shot.
Chee, you're next.
Augie, your turn.
Two votes for Kyle.
Two votes Chris.
Come on up, Chris.
I'm looking around because I'm wondering if everybody else is seeing what I'm seeing.
I don't think that went over very well with William.
I don't want anyone in this competition to want to skate by through the middle.
Each of us can make our own decisions, and I'm not worried about what anyone else thinks about me changing my vote.
It is what it is, and I stand behind it.
Two votes for Kyle.
Two votes for Chris.
One vote for William.
Greg, it's your turn.
I shot will's target strictly on revenge.
He threw me under the bus and sent me to the elimination against Terry.
I returned the favor.
When he fired the shot, it was like, "okay, I see exactly where we are.
" I know exactly how we're gonna be playing this game.
And what comes around goes around.
William, Kyle, Chris, you each have two votes.
Kyle, it's your turn.
Kyle, you and William have two votes.
Chris, you have three.
That means you will be in the elimination challenge.
William, Kyle, here's how we're gonna break the tie.
I'll call you up one at a time.
There will be one target behind me.
Closest to the bull's-eye is safe.
Nice.
Nice.
It's gonna be a shoot-off.
It couldn't be any more perfect.
That's what we came here to do on "Top Shot.
" William, you'll go first.
I know William's extremely good at this.
His forte is shooting bull's-eyes.
This is gonna be a great shoot.
I'm feeling pretty good.
I know I'm gonna shoot the center of the target.
I've done it every single time.
I just want to try to put it as center as I possibly can.
Will went up there and he shot just over the bull's-eye.
And I'm thinking, "aha.
That's just enough room for Kyle to beat that shot.
" Kyle, it's all up to you.
Fire when ready.
He got it.
Nice shot.
Nice shot.
Dead center! It was a beautiful shot.
I think Kyle has out-performed will throughout the entire competition, and that single shot proves the point.
William, you'll be going against Chris tomorrow in the elimination challenge.
You guys can all head back to the house.
I'll see you tomorrow.
At the end of the day, whoever is the best shot is gonna win this thing.
That's what I'm gonna focus on make sure that I'm on-target and the one walking back into the house.
Yeah, I've got to fight my way back.
And the game is definitely changing.
You know, I'll be back.
I don't care how well they do.
Their names are on the chopping block, and you can take that to the bank.
Coming up on "Top Shot" The Henry rifle.
Go! I've never shot a lever-action rifle before.
My goal is to win, and I expect to win.
We are all tied up! William and Chris, welcome to practice for the elimination challenge.
We're about to find out which one of you has the skills to continue in this competition.
In this practice for the elimination challenge, you're gonna be firing a weapon from the civil war the 1860 Henry rifle.
Very nice.
I've seen one before, but I've never actually touched one.
I've never fired a lever-action rifle before, so I'm pretty excited about it.
The Henry rifle was a breakthrough, lever-action repeating rifle.
It could fire jackrabbit quick in trained hands.
The confederates were taken completely off guard by this newfangled 16-shooter.
Rebel troops called the Henry "that damned yankee rifle that they load on Sunday and shoot all week.
" Kelly Bachand and George Reinas return to help you work with this weapon.
Good morning, fellas.
Good morning, Colby.
You're gonna practice separately.
Chris, you're up first.
William, you can head back to the house.
You'll practice later.
Good luck, fellas.
I've never shot a lever-action rifle before.
It is a really solid rifle.
It's got a significant amount of weight to it.
Nice.
Nice.
Very nice.
One thing I'm seeing that you might want to get used to is stop breaking off the weapon system so much and coming off of it.
Shoot, work the action, stay on it, shoot.
So, just try to replicate everything the same.
The shooters need to be consistent.
If you're not doing the same thing over and over again, you cannot get expected and repeatable accuracy.
Okay, you brought your face off the stock on that one.
Yeah, I was looking don't worry about that, okay? There's already gonna be enough pressure on you.
That's something he's gonna need to work on as the challenge comes up.
Thanks again, guys.
A pleasure.
Yeah, brother.
Good luck.
Cheers.
I'm feeling pretty good, and I'll do really well in today's challenge.
Now, choosing a grip's gonna be one of the biggest things.
I see you messing with it.
If you go close in underneath the block see if that works for you.
I already see some good things, too.
You're getting a good cheek weld.
It's what you're gonna need.
Practice seems to be doing really well.
I'm doing pretty good at this point.
That's good shooting right there.
That's what we want to see.
All right.
William is a strong shooter.
I don't think he even missed any targets.
Yep, best of luck to you.
Thanks, guys.
I appreciate it.
See you.
I walked away from the practice feeling very confident.
The gun was kind of built for me before its time, I guess.
Since the start of the competition, it's been no secret that I have zero military, zero law-enforcement background.
I'm a self-taught, I.
T.
Geek.
I started shooting firearms when I was 6 years old, and my father took me to the range.
So, for about the next 20 years, you know, I was shooting maybe only once or twice a year.
And it wasn't until "Top Shot" season one I went from being a gun owner of one to a gun owner of eight guns.
And, you know, I definitely have "Top Shot" to thank for that.
I actually didn't really start shooting until I actually came into the marine corps.
Immediately after boot camp, I tried out for this base team, and I did very well.
The next thing you know, you know, I'm one of the top guys on the shooting team.
From there, the competitions and the accolades just continued to grow.
I truly don't believe that Chris can beat me in a gunfight.
I expect to win.
When I step on the line, I expect to win.
Welcome to the "Top Shot" elimination challenge, fellas.
Chris and William, which one of you guys has what it takes to continue in this competition? We're about to find out.
Let's see if you can fire the Henry rifle as fast as those union soldiers.
This is a head-to-head challenge.
You each have a set of five, metal, knock-down targets Each target consists of a metal bull's-eye and two outer rings.
You've got to hit the outer ring the inner ring And the bull's-eye, but you can hit them in any order.
The first shooter to knock down all the targets wins.
All right, guys.
Head up to the firing line.
Let's do this.
Let's go, guys.
I'm feeling really confident, and I fully expect to win and come back to the house tonight.
It's gonna take a little bit of speed.
It's gonna take a little bit of accuracy.
That's gonna play right into my strong suit.
My goal is to win.
It's what I came here to do, and I think that I will win.
Coming up on "Top Shot" Go! I'm sending round after round downrange.
He could not hit sand.
Ohh, man! Ohh, and he's out! All right.
It's time for the elimination challenge.
As a bonus, the winner's also gonna get a $2,000 gift card to use at bass pro shops.
Chris, you'll be shooting at the blue targets, and, William, you'll be shooting at the orange.
Marksmen, ready Set Go! Chris taking out targets on the left side of the course.
William's working on the right side.
William hits with his first shot.
Chris misses on his first two shots.
Chris takes down two of his targets.
We're tied up.
Will takes out his first set of orange targets.
Hits that largest target.
Chris still trying to take out the bull's-eye on his first set of targets.
William takes out the middle ring on his second target.
I'm sending round after round downrange, and just nothing is going down.
Chris finally hits his first blue bull's-eye.
William has already cleared his second set of targets.
I look over, and it looks like I'm in a pretty good, commanding lead.
I don't want to give Chris a chance.
I want to be aggressive, and I want to drive these plates in.
William moving on to his third set of bull's-eye rings and takes out another orange target.
And now he has to reload.
Chris is back up on the course.
Chris missing a couple of times.
I see Chris having problems.
Will's just up there he's just rifling through them, and Chris could not hit sand.
I mean, it was horrible.
Now he hits that big ring.
William has eight targets hit.
Chris has five targets.
Chris takes it out.
He now has six targets down.
Having to reload.
William has nine targets down.
William takes down his 10th ring.
And his 11th ring.
Chris has got to pick up the pace here.
At this point, I'm thinking, "wow, I'm in trouble.
I'm in big, big trouble.
" William having to reload.
Chris back on the course.
Takes out two targets in a row.
Chris Cheng! Now he's getting some good hits.
But now he has to reload.
William back on the range.
He's on his last group.
He has three targets left.
I fire a shot.
I rack the action, and then when I'm going to close the action Aah! my finger hits the trigger and I fire one bang.
And I do it again.
And I'm saying, "hey, you're going way too fast.
Slow down.
" Chris trying to hurry through this reload and catch up.
William has two targets left.
Can William close it out with the rounds he has left? Chris takes out a couple of targets.
Oh, here it comes.
He's catching up.
He's catching up.
He's catching up.
He was going through the rounds like crazy.
Chris now only one target behind William! William's having to reload! Can Chris take the lead here? William fumbling with his ammo! We are all tied up with two targets left! Chris has one target remaining! Ohh, and he's out! Ohh, man! Now he's having to go for the reload! William's back on the course and loaded up! William now with one target left! We're tied up with one bull's-eye target left! Who's gonna be the first one to take it out? Yeah! That's it! Cease fire! Cease fire! Holy smokes, that was close! I am just I'm on cloud nine right now.
That was an incredible shoot-out.
Chris, congratulations.
You win the challenge.
Nice job.
You're still in this thing.
What an incredible feeling that I came back from behind, and I'm still in the competition.
William, you have fired your last shot.
You've been eliminated from "Top Shot.
" Take a moment and say goodbye to these guys before you head out.
Thanks.
Good job.
A pleasure.
Nice shooting.
