Uh I'm not sure yet. Uh
I'm Staff Sergeant Gomez.
Ricky Sudder.
I'm just just
looking for information.
You thinking about enlisting?
Yeah. Well, maybe.
Well, why don't you follow
me so we can find out
if you're a man worthy of wearing
a Marine Corps uniform? Come on.
[PREACHER] Wait until you see this.
Okay, you ready?
- Yeah.
- All right.
A-ha. Yeah?
- Whoa! Awesome!
- Check it out.
[PREACHER GROANS AND SIGHS]
[CHUCKLES] Hey?
- What's that?
- Spookiest ghost stories ever.
- Mua-ha-ha-ha!
- [CHRISTOPHER GIGGLES]
[PREACHER LAUGHS]
We're having s'mores?
Oh yeah, you bet. As soon
as we get the fire started.
Can we stay up late?
Late as you want.
- Can we go fishing in the morning?
- Well, I don't see why not.
[CHUCKLING]
[PREACHER SIGHS]
Hey, listen, buddy.
You know, I'm sorry I couldn't
let you go to that sleepover.
But your mom asked me to keep
you safe. I care about you.
- So that is what I'm gonna do.
- [SIGHS]
It's just everyone thinks
I'm weird, except for Owen.
I don't think you're weird.
- Connie doesn't think you're weird.
- That doesn't count.
You guys are grown-ups.
You have to be nice to me.
I'm nice to you because I like you.
You're a cool kid.
And if the other kids can't see
that, well, that is their loss.
[PREACHER INHALES SHARPLY] Hm.
You know what?
I don't actually hate it here.
Yeah, I know.
[PREACHER CHUCKLES]
Hmm.
- Thanks for the campout, Preach.
- You're welcome.
So, you wanna help me
get that fire started?
- [LAUGHS] Heck yeah.
- Yeah? Good.
You get the crackers, chocolate.
I'll get the marshmallows.
Lilly?
- What are you doing here?
- It's Hope.
She's on the phone.
She couldn't reach you.
Hello!
Hello?
Can you hear me?
Yeah, nice.
Nice and golden brown.
- Gonna put mine in there.
- I'll cross mine on.
There we go. Let's see. There we go.
- You took my fire.
- I took your flame.
- [BOTH] Oh.
- Oh, there we go. Look at that.
Burnt to the core. Now, that's a s'more.
- That one's perfect.
- That's good.
I want that. Can I get that?
[JACK] Hey.
[MEL] Hey.
I saw Preacher and Christopher's
campout, and I got inspired.
Here you go.
- Thanks.
- Mm-hmm.
How was the rest of your day?
A little unexpected.
Did something happen?
Did Charmaine tell you she was
planning on moving to Oregon?
[SIGHS HEAVILY]
Yeah.
Yeah, she told me that
she was thinking about it.
Why didn't you tell me?
You were in the hospital,
and the only thing I was
focused on at the time was you.
And after I was released?
I didn't wanna upset you
while you were recovering.
And after that?
After that, you told me that
Charmaine was gonna live
with Todd in Clear River,
so it just seemed like a non-issue.
Yeah, but let's just say she had moved.
I would've been completely blindsided.
But she didn't move, and
so, if I had told you,
then you would've been
upset for no reason.
Is that what you would've wanted?
Yes.
Oh.
I will always wanna know the truth,
whether you think it's
gonna upset me or not.
Jack, I'm really sorry.
No. It's okay. I mean
it was a bit of a shock. [SCOFFS]
Are we okay?
Yeah.
100%.
So are we gonna have a real campout?
[LAUGHS] What is a real campout?
Sleeping under the stars.
A-ha, see, I have a
no-sleeping-on-the-ground policy.
What, even on a night
as gorgeous as this?
I ask you, why would I sleep outside
when I can just enjoy the view
and then sleep in my own bed?
The faint sound of the
river lulling us to sleep.
[MEL] Hmm.
Our bodies keeping each other warm.
Oh, okay.
I I think I can do that.
- Maybe?
- Maybe.
[JACK] Mm.
[PHONE RINGING]
[SIGHS]
Sorry, I gotta
That's okay.
Hey, Mike, what's up?
[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]
Got it.
- What is it?
- They got him.
Jimmy's in custody.
[SIGHS HEAVILY]
