What About Brian (2006) s02e05 Episode Script

What About Angelo's Ashes…

Previously on "What about Brian" Hi.
I'm Summer.
Hi, Summer.
Oh, my God.
I am so sorry.
Are you okay? How about dinner? It may be time to consider that your marriage is over.
Tomorrow morning you start looking for a place to live.
You can't deny you had feelings.
It was sex.
You knew that.
What the hell is going on? Leviathan's going in a different direction.
Said you were gonna take care of it, that there was nothing to worry about.
It's nothing that you did.
You can buy your game back for the bargain price of $75,000.
Dave and I need an investor.
Come to work for me here.
That's not what I'm asking for.
Can I cash in my CDs, my I.
R.
A.
? It's the game.
Someone's grabbing it.
They uploaded it to a free gaming site.
I gave Suzanne the password.
It was not my dad's! It was every penny I had and then some! Angelo's coming home? Oh, my God.
Is that the surprise? Pull over, pull over.
What's going on? That was the police calling from Angelo's phone.
Is he okay? He's dead.
There's this Italian restaurant.
It's a chain.
You you know the one.
There's one on la Cieneg Lots of salads.
Lots of bread.
Anyway, they had this commercial with a big Italian family eating dinner, and they're just having a great time.
You know, they're passing the bread and eating the pasta and laughing.
And it's, like, the greatest meal ever.
There's just such a warm, happy feeling of family.
It's heartwarming.
Every time I see one of those commercials, I I can't help but think about Angelo, because He hated those commercials, man.
You should have seen his face every time they came on.
He'd start screaming at the TV in Italian.
I guess, he didn't think it was a real picture of family, or it was offensive to him in some way screaming at the TV, it made him feel better.
I'm gonna miss that.
And it's funny.
When when tragedy happens, you you swear to yourself that things are gonna be different, that you're gonna appreciate life more, "sneeze the day," as Angelo would say.
And you do for about a week, and then you go back to normal life, because you have to.
Well, do me a favor.
Don't do that.
Remember this feeling that you have right now, how short life is, how fragile and unfair and use it to inspire yourself.
I think that's what Angelo would do, and I know that's what he'd want us to do.
And if you ever see one of those commercials, turn off your TV and think of our friend.
Thanks.
I love you.
Someone should go up there.
Good job.
You don't have to do this, Nic.
If you're not ready, people will understand.
No, it's okay.
I I want to do it.
Dave's right.
Angelo did hate those commercials, but it had nothing to do with this picture of a family.
The truth is that he auditioned for one and was rejected.
I didn't know what to say, so I wrote a list of things that I loved about Angelo, so here goes.
His smile.
His laugh.
His eyes.
He had The most beautiful eyes.
His innocence.
He still couldn't believe that he really lived in California, this boy from a small town in Italy.
He went to the beach the first day he got here.
He loved the Santa Monica pier and the ferris wheel.
Angelo was just a big kid who loved soccer and cartoons and me.
So don't feel sorry for me, because Angelo and I enjoyed every moment we had together.
I can honestly say that I have no regrets.
And even though it's hard knowing that he'll never get to see his daughter, it's comforting knowing that he'll always live on in her.
I love you, honey.
If you walk out that door this whole world just keeps spinning 'round spinning 'round like it did the day you She is such an amazing woman.
I don't know if I could be that strong.
It seems so strange that he's gone.
I know.
This is the first person our age I've known who's died.
It's actually my first funeral.
You're lucky.
I think I'm actually going on double digits.
It's kind of creepy.
All I keep thinking about is that Angelo died in freak one-car accident a month after I walked away from getting hit by a semi.
What was he doing in Naples? Weren't they shooting the movie in Rome? Maybe he was on vacation.
I wonder if he knew what was happening.
You know, if he had time to think about things.
How's Nic doing? Better than the rest of us.
She's a rock.
Well, I don't think she should be alone this week, so I've worked out a schedule of who should sleep over when.
We can all take shifts.
Deena, I have you, on for tonight.
Seriously, you've got to get rid of that girl.
She's insane.
I know, I will.
I swear.
Hey, guys.
Oh, no, none for me.
Thanks.
I've been meaning to ask you.
You been able to find the dough you needed to buy back your game? No, no, not yet, but we're gonna be okay.
Okay? We're gonna be great.
Got a lot of irons in the fire, that sort of thing.
Well, I'm wishing you the best.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Oh, boy.
I should, probably get some more trash.
Okay, Brian, we both know what's going on.
It's enough.
It's time.
Time for what? It's time for you to grow up a little.
Come on, dad.
Are you really about to lecture me now, today, the day of Angelo's funeral? That's the point.
Your sister's husband just died.
I just wish that you'd see the big picture for a change.
Thanks for the advice.
- I'm your father.
- Yeah, biologically.
Don't try and act like my friend.
It's too late for that.
I can't change the past, son, but I can help you with your future.
I offered you a job.
The job still stands.
I gotta go.
Do me a favor.
Look after your sister.
I'm worried about her.
She's going through a rough time.
She'll be fine.
Nicole's pretty tough.
I know she's tough, but I'm worried about her.
- I'm worried she might fall into - Fall into what? Come on.
We both know your mother's mental health history.
Yeah, yeah, we do know mom's history, and we all know whose fault it was, too.
Hang in there.
Thanks.
I'm just gonna go home and get some stuff, and then I'll be back to spend the night.
- You really don't have to.
- I know.
I want to.
Why don't I give you a ride home we'll switch cars in the morning.
That's fine.
- Okay, I'm just gonna get my coat.
- I'll get it.
Listen, Karen, I'm really sorry, because this is terrible timing, but I think I should tell you before we get too serious, and this day has really made me think about things.
I just don't think it's gonna work out You and me, us.
I was gonna say the same thing.
You were? Yeah.
You know, after hearing how much Ange and Nic loved each other, I realized that we're forcing it, Brian.
It's like we have to work too hard.
We get together.
We break up.
We get back together, you know? It's like one of those seesaws.
No, never mind.
It's just It's not how it should be, you know? It's not natural.
yeah, sure.
But I'm glad we're on the same page.
Yeah.
And I hope we can be friends.
Okay.
I'll call you tomorrow, okay? You have got to break up with her.
I think I just did.
Deena's waiting.
Dave? You okay? Bri, what did the urn look like that, Angelo was resting in the wall? I think it was red, about a foot high.
Yeah, kind of like this one? - Oh, no.
- Oh, yes.
Well, well, that can't be the same one.
What do you think, it's a coincidence? People keep extra urns laying around the house? - Oh, man, this is bad.
- Yeah, and I saw the funeral guy put it in the wall and close it.
- He did.
He definitely did.
- He definitely did, which means that your sister went back there, right, somehow, and she got the ashes of her dead husband.
she got the ashes of her dead husband.
and she put 'em in her own closet.
No, I'm sure there's an explanation.
I mean, you make it sound crazy when you put it like that.
Really, you think? How would you put it that doesn't sound so crazy? Look, we cannot tell her.
She obviously doesn't want us to know.
You think I'm gonna say something? What am I gonna say, Brian? "Hey, Nic.
You seen Angelo lately?" Nice! Too bad we can't shoot Suzanne instead.
We should tape her face on there.
Damn.
We should sue her.
How? We have no proof and no money for a lawsuit even if we did want to sue.
We barely have money for a latte.
I apologize again, you know, for being with her, not telling you, the whole mess.
No, it's over.
And if anyone knows how a woman can screw you up, it's me.
All right, you know what? We're down.
We're down, but we're not out, right? Come on, let's hear it, go.
I'm standing right here.
- Hear what? - The plan to save Zap Monkey, man.
You know, the irons in the big fire, everything you were talking about at Nicole's.
Actually, it's, "iron" singular.
I may have exaggerated a little to shut my dad up.
I didn't want to hear him tell me I need to grow up again.
Yeah, we're as grown up as he is.
Sorta.
All right, what's the iron? Come on.
You remember that game we started before "vision state," - the one with the gorilla? - "Evolution Revolution"? - Yeah, I love that game.
- Good, 'cause it's our last chance, and we're pitching it to K.
C.
Gaming.
- I already made the appointment.
- you are a genius! Oh, god, I love you! That's the way to go! We go in there, we sell that game, we get some money.
That's the plan.
That's the plan.
I'll do some sketches.
I think I got bunch of 'em laying around anyway.
That's great! We're gonna need a complete list of all of Angelo's assets real estate, stock, bonds.
savings accounts.
His credit cards need to be cancelled, and you need to file a tax return for him.
Does he have a will? Not that I know of.
I mean, why would he? So how you doing, really? It's still hard to get used to, 'cause I wasn't seeing him every day.
I mean, he would send me an e-mail every morning, and sometimes that was our only contact, so I guess it just hasn't sunk in.
I know.
It's I mean, I feel guilty even talking about this with you, but I'm having a hard time with this.
Everyone is.
I mean, I don't know how you stood up there and gave that speech.
Well, to be honest, neither do I.
I-I guess I was kinda numb, but I The thing I kept telling myself was, "Angelo had a great life.
" He really did.
He was happy.
He got married.
We were starting a family.
He finally got a part in a movie.
I mean, he really did do everything he wanted to do.
How many people can say that? Yeah.
Yeah, you're right.
He even started playing golf with you guys.
That's right.
You bought him that lame hat he always wore.
I thought it looked kind of cute on him.
I wish I knew where that thing was.
Anyway, he wore it just to bug you.
He knew how much you guys hated it.
Well, he was right.
They're finally down.
Is it me, or are kid books getting longer? What's up with that? It used to be the little cute bunny.
You'd pet his fuzzy ears, the end, and now it's like the bunny's got to go to the store, and he's got to buy food, and he's got to cook dinner.
And the bunny's got parents and siblings and cousins, and they all want their own stories, and it just never ends.
and I'm exhausted.
Thanks for letting me read to the girls.
What are we gonna do? I don't know, Deen.
Because I can't stop thinking about what you said at the funeral, and, I just know Mommy! Mommy! - You're up.
- Okay.
In a second, okay? You know, what you said, your eulogy Dave, it was so beautiful, and you were right.
You know, life is short, and we should live it while we can.
Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing.
But this, this isn't life.
It's just limbo.
So what are you saying? Angelo's death has really shaken everyone up, but it hasn't changed the way we felt before it happened.
I think we should talk to a lawyer.
I guess you're right.
Okay, I know you guys didn't come down here just to chat with me, and I got a meeting in 10 minutes, so Well, we've been, having issues in our marriage.
Yeah? and we want to explore our options.
Your options? Yeah, we're splitting up, so we thought we should talk to a lawyer.
Wait, you're thinking about getting a divorce? Look, if you want to explore it, you're gonna have to say it, people.
Yes, Jimmy.
A divorce, we're thinking about getting a divorce.
Well, I don't think you should be thinking about getting a divorce.
What? It's serious.
I mean, are you 100% sure about this? I mean, you've really thought this through? Yes, that's all we've done, is thought about it and talked about it, and we went to therapy.
We've argued.
We're sure.
We just want to know what we have to do.
If you're really considering this, there are steps that need to be taken and things you need to understand.
I mean, even if we file today, there's a minimum of 6 months before anything becomes finalized.
It's a sort of a cooling-off period to make sure this isn't a heat-of-the-moment thing.
Well, there's a lot of legalities and paperwork to deal with, so you should probably consider getting separate lawyers.
Yeah, we can work through all that.
I know you believe that right now, but things change.
Well, we won't let that happen.
Here it is.
Angelo's stupid hat.
I don't know.
I think it's kind of cute.
Yeah, well, you're the only one besides Nicole.
I stole this from him so we'd never have to see him wear it again.
Well, it's really sweet of you to find it for her.
What is that? Your high school yearbook.
- Yeah, no, no.
Don't look at that.
- No way, man.
I want to see your picture.
Look how cute you were.
Yeah, come on, let's go.
This is embarrassing.
Not until I'm done.
You made me come here before lunch.
I'm gonna take my time.
Isn't that your friend Brian? Yeah.
That's his senior page.
Nice goals for the future "get a sports car, get married, write a book, meet Sharon Stone.
" - I wonder how he's doing on those.
- 0 for 4, actually.
Here's your senior page.
"Go to Alaska, run a marathon, throw out the first pitch at Wrigley field.
" Yeah, okay, that's enough.
What? It's adorable.
It's depressing, actually.
Can we just go? Sure.
All right.
It's called "evolution revolution.
" You hear it all the time.
Survival of the fittest, right? Well, here's your chance to prove it, to prove that you're the fittest.
I mean, this is a game Darwin would love.
From the dawn of man to current day, you actually begin the game as a chimp, and your goal is to get to today, to evolve.
You've got to survive climate changes, predators, other dominant species.
You have to learn how to walk upright, to make fire, to use tools.
It's like "Survivor" but millions of years ago.
I mean, maybe we could even get Jeff Probst to do the voice.
And the, the higher the level, the more difficult it gets.
All you want is for your species to survive.
Yeah, obviously, we haven't worked it all out yet.
I mean, look how long it took Darwin.
That's right.
It took him a while.
- Don't you knock? - Don't bother.
You don't have to hide it, Nic.
I already saw it here the other day.
You went into my closet? Why is it here? How is it here? After the funeral, I changed my mind.
I couldn't stand the idea of Angelo being put in that wall.
It was just so wrong, so I I went back, and I convinced them to open it back up for me, and I took the urn.
So what, you're just gonna keep it in your room all the time? Maybe.
I have no idea what I'm gonna do.
You're kidding, right? Can we not have this conversation right now? Hey, Nic, listen you should really take it back.
I mean, it sounds like something mom would do.
I'm not crazy, Brian.
I know that.
That's not what I meant.
I just think you should put the ashes where they belong.
It'll be good for you.
How do you know what would be good for me? Did your husband die recently? Look, I get it.
You're upset.
I just think you'd feel better if you'd just you know what would make me feel better? If everybody would just leave me alone.
- You don't mean that.
- Yes, I do! I'm not an invalid.
I don't need 24-hour nursing care.
No one's saying that you do, but clearly, - you have some stuff going on.
- Shut up, Brian.
Just shut up.
You don't know anything about this.
You don't know what it's like to lose somebody you love.
You don't even know what it's like to love somebody at all.
And don't talk about Marjorie, because that was some dumb fantasy you had in your head, so you wouldn't have to grow up, you wouldn't have to take responsibility for anything, because you knew it would never happen, so you could stay poor, immature Brian.
This has nothing to do with Marjorie or me.
I'm just trying to help.
Then leave me alone.
Go! Go, fellas! Go, fellas! Go, go, go, go, go! What are you doing here? Is something wrong? No, nothing's wrong.
I just wanted to pick up the girls.
I thought I'd take 'em out for ice cream or something.
We have a playdate.
Really Maybe you should just check with me in the future before you show up.
I didn't know I needed to check with you before I saw my kids, but I guess that's what divorce is about, right? Why don't we just go inside, huh? They're probably waiting for us.
So can we consider this me checking in? I'd like to pick up after school, spend the afternoons with the girls.
Well, that's not really gonna work for us, Dave.
I mean, the girls and I have a schedule, too.
If you want to help out, why don't you try stopping by in the mornings? 'Cause I can't do that, especially not now, since I'm hustling for work.
I take it the pitch didn't go so great.
Here we go.
No.
You know what? Don't worry about it.
Well, we're gonna have to figure something else out.
Yeah, we are gonna have to figure something else out, or our lawyers will.
You know, I think Jimmy's right.
I think we should get separate lawyers.
Come on now, baby, I know where you're headed with this.
No, I don't want you to make a big deal.
Yeah, I am telling the truth.
Let me call you back.
Adam just walked in.
No, I don't want to No, I don't All right, fine.
I love your hot body.
Bye.
That's, your mother? That's funny stuff.
You want to play racquetball at lunch Wednesday? I can't.
We can play Friday instead.
Do you think they're ever gonna announce these partnerships? Because it's kind of driving me crazy.
I'd like to I'd like to know already.
- When? - Last night.
Are you serious? You got it, didn't you? I did.
Who else? Just me and Richardson.
I'm sorry, man.
No, don't apologize.
It's good.
You you deserved it.
You earned it.
But Richardson over me? I'd really like to know what they're thinking.
- You want to know, really? - Yeah.
Okay, well, the truth is, they had their concerns.
I mean, you were in a bar fight.
You were in jail.
From their perspective, not exactly partner material right there.
And, you know, they just they just want to make sure you're back on track, you know, that you're stable, after the whole Marjorie leaving-you-at-the-altar thing.
Remember, man, there's still slots later in the year, you know? Yeah, yeah, sure.
Yeah, I'm gonna go.
How's Nic? She freaked out on me when I told her I knew about the ashes.
Well, you have to cut her a little bit of slack.
I know, I know.
You know, Deena and I are talking about a divorce.
What? Don't say anything to anybody, though, okay? No, no, of course not, man.
You all right? I don't know, Brian.
I really don't know anymore.
I'm just so confused about everything, man my marriage and work.
You know, I know this is probably a stupid question, but you hear from the guys at KC? I actually did.
They called this morning.
What? Wait, you didn't tell me? Well, do they want to buy the game? No, they don't, they don't want to buy the game.
They hated it.
But they did offer me a job.
When you say "me," you mean not us.
Yeah, me.
And I took it.
- You took it? - Yeah, I took it.
I had to take it, Brian.
Yeah, well, what about this? - What about us? - Dude, this is done.
We can't pay the rent.
We had to let everybody go.
We're in debt.
I've got a family to support, Bri.
So that's it.
You know, we just clean it out and pretend Zap Monkey never happened.
It wasn't my plan I wasn't planning on losing my wife.
I wasn't planning on losing my job.
But I gotta do this.
It's time for me to grow up.
Yeah, I know.
I get it.
I totally do.
It's just - I thought we were partners.
- We are partners.
We'll always be partners.
We're just not gonna work together.
Well, I'm glad you changed your mind.
I bet you've still got your real estate license.
Well, you made me get it the summer I turned 18.
You told me I'd thank you for it one day.
I'm still waiting for that "thank you.
" Anyway, I really think that this is the best move for you right now.
Now obviously I need a job, and I need the money, and I appreciate what you're offering.
That's why I took you up on it.
But I'm only here until I figure out what the next step is.
So So you said something to me on the day of the funeral.
Now I let it slide, because we were there for Nicole, but I want to talk about it now.
I want to talk about your mother.
I don't want to talk about that.
You said that I was responsible for her mental health.
Dad see, you have a picture in your mind, son, of what went on back then, but it's the wrong picture.
- You were 10 years old.
- I was 8.
That's the point.
You were a child.
You had no idea what was going on then.
You don't remember, or you choose not to remember, but your mother was having those episodes ever since you were a baby.
She was very ill long before I left.
It had something to do with her chemical makeup, but you can't hold me responsible for that.
You think that makes it okay, that you left someone who had those kind of problems? What should I have done? Put yourself in my place for a change.
What would you do if you were married to a woman that you you couldn't get through to, you couldn't communicate with? I had my life to live.
Sure, there are other women to marry and leave, right.
Maybe we should just stick to business.
Go easy now go easy now later on in the road I'm gonna lay my body down We'll meet along the way, I know How did you know I was here? Just had a feeling.
You remember after dad left? Mom just walked around pretending that everything was fine, that nothing was gonna change.
And then one day she was watching "general hospital," and then something just snapped.
She was never the same after that.
She started painting more and talking less.
That's not gonna happen to you, Nic.
Do you know this is the first time that I've really cried? Just seeing that little piece of paper with his name on that wall, it just hit me.
It really hit me.
I'm not ready to let go.
I'm not, Bri.
Everybody thinks I'm so strong, but I can't even let go of this stupid urn.
Then don't, okay? You don't have to.
Yeah, you were right.
What am I gonna do, walk around with it everywhere I go? People are gonna start to think I'm nuts.
Start to think? Stop.
I'm serious.
So am I.
You don't have to do anything you don't want to.
I'm so sorry about what I said last night.
That was so mean.
You've been so great.
I'm sorry.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
Meet along the way, I know You were right.
Maybe I do need to grow up a little.
So your friend Nicole how's she doing? Great.
Totally recovered.
How do think she's doing? I'm sorry.
It's just that Angelo and the partnership it's just freaking me out.
Angelo died, and he did all these things in his life.
And I saw that stupid yearbook and my list, and it got me thinking, and I just I don't I don't know.
Adam, - stop.
- Stop what? Stop eating? Stop being the "poor me, my friend died and I didn't get my promotion" guy.
Okay, and what am I supposed to be? The "whoopee! My friend died, and I didn't get the promotion" guy? Look, when I saw that picture of you in the yearbook, I felt like I knew everything about you.
That's depressing.
The golden boy smart, funny, a good athlete.
You know, but sometimes it's easier to be the geek or the guy under the radar.
The golden boys they're set up to fail.
What are you talking about? You can never measure up to what you were supposed to be.
It's impossible.
Is this supposed to be cheering me up? Just get rid of that picture you have in your head and live a little.
Well, I wouldn't know how to do that.
Just get back to the things you wrote in the yearbook the marathon, Alaska.
That kid had bigger things on his mind than making partner.
Yeah, well, that kid is gone, okay? I barely remember him.
Here you go.
It's too bad.
Listen If you find him, you know, the marathon kid, give me a call.
I think I might like him.
Dinner's here.
- You okay? - Yeah, fine.
I am.
I think you should look at this before we eat.
It's from Italy.
It's from Angelo.
I know.
He must have sent it last week or something.
"For my little bambino!" Nicole, what's going on? Nothing.
I've just been having these pains all day, but I'm sure it's I-It's normal.
- We're going to the hospital.
- Okay.
I'll get your bags.
It's all gonna be fine.
I promise.
You don't know that, Brian.
No, I do.
I actually went to medical school while I was gone those 6 months.
Mrs.
Varzi? Good news.
Everything looks fine.
What you had are called preterm contractions.
It's not uncommon for a woman your age.
They can be brought on by stress.
Now you will need to take it easy for a little while, because women your age are also at a higher risk for preterm labor, and that's something we definitely don't want, but other than that, you're great, and so is the baby.
Any questions? So that's all? We can go? That's all.
We'll get a nurse in here to unhook you, and you should see your O.
B.
Next week.
Thank you, doctor.
Did he really have to say "a woman" my "age" twice? He doesn't even look like he has his driver's license yet.
- Is everything all right? - We were worried.
She's fine.
Preterm contractions.
I had those with Larissa.
You remember that? Remember it? You kicked me all night while you had 'em.
The point is we're relieved that you're fine.
- And the baby, too.
- Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you for everything, and not just for tonight but for everything, 'cause I know I could not get through this time without you.
So if I flip out, don't listen to anything I say and don't go anywhere, because I love you all.
This has made me realize that we're all we have the people we love.
okay, that's it.
Come on, everyone out.
Preggers gotta get dressed.
Let's go.
All right, preggers.
We'll see you later.
Yeah? About the other day - Congrats on the job.
- Thanks, buddy.
We're cool, right? You and me? Always.
By the way, don't make any plans for tomorrow night.
I'm taking you somewhere.
You know what? For once, let the little brother take care of the big sister.
Crazy few days? Yeah.
I'm glad you were around for it.
Me, too.
Just so you know, well, you can pick up the girls from school whenever you want.
Thanks.
I appreciate that, but actually, I was thinking I'd help you out in the mornings.
I'm only gonna have a few afternoons after school anyway, so Zap Monkey's done, but, I get offered a job.
Really? Yeah.
That's great, and I am sorry about the company, but I knew someone would snatch you up.
You're really good at what you do.
I should probably get going.
Yeah.
The new day dawns And I am practicing my purpose once again It is fresh and it is fruitful if I win but if I lose come here.
ooh, I don't know Can I stay? I'll be tired but I will turn and I will go Only guessing 'til I get there then I'll know Oh, I will know And all the children walking home past the factories Can see the light that's shining in my window As I write this song to you And all the cars running fast along the interstate Can feel the love that radiates Illuminating what I know is true And all will be well Even after all the promises you've broken to yourself All will be well You can ask me how but only time will tell And all the children walking home past the factories Can see the light so I was looking through my yearbook again.
And, I thought if I'm gonna run that marathon, I'm gonna need a I'm gonna need a partner to train with me.
Illuminating what I know is true And all will be well Even after all the promises you've broken to yourself All will be well You can ask me how but only time will tell You got to keep it up And don't give up And chase your dreams and you will find All in time And all the children walking home past the factories Can see the light that's shining in my window As I write this song to you And all the cars running fast along the interstate Can feel the love that radiates Illuminating what I know is true And all will be well Even after all the promises you've broken to yourself All will be well You can ask me how but only time will tell All will be well Even after all the promises you've broken to yourself All will be well You can ask me how but only time will tell You can ask me how but only time will tell
