- And tonight - Everything was better in the '70s! it's '70s night on "Wizard Wars.
" - Sonny Bono! - Sonny Bono.
Will one of the challenger teams win Ha! .
.
or will the Wizards do the victory dance? Thank you guys very much! Find out next! Hi, everyone, I'm Ellen Fox and welcome to "Wizard Wars.
" Here's how it goes down.
Magic's top minds meet on our stage to stretch their skills by creating routines with everyday objects.
So let's get to it and meet our judges.
Please welcome Penn & Teller, Christen Gerhart, and Jason Latimer.
Now let's meet tonight's challengers.
First, he's performed for Brad Pitt and Al Pacino and has wowed audiences as far away as China.
From St.
Louis, it's Joel Meyers.
I've been doing magic 18 years.
I always feel like I can make magic with any objects.
My favorite trick to do is anything that really involves somebody in the show.
I think my approach to "Wizard Wars" is kind of instilled in me because of the way I was approaching magic my whole life.
It's gonna give me a real edge.
Joining Joel is another comedy magician who has released a two-hour DVD of his patented creations.
From Royal Oak, Michigan, it's Nathan Kranzo.
What makes me stand out as a magician is I love being challenged.
Every time I'm faced with a challenge, I usually do something good because when you're forced to create quickly, a lot of times you come up with the best stuff.
I'm here to win.
I'm here to take it all.
Taking on the Midwestern men of magic are two of California's best conjurers, starting with a creator whose specialty is combining effects with a touch of danger.
He's so good, it's scary.
It's Chris Oberle.
In the magic community, I'm known for close-up magic.
When I perform magic, the audience reactions can be gasps, they can freak out, run away.
It's definitely a good feeling when you fool somebody.
Joining Chris is an award-winning stage illusionist who has toured with the Greatest Show on Earth.
Say hello to Alex Ramon.
I'm known for my large illusion show and being a part of big multi-million-dollar productions.
And on "Wizard Wars," you have to make magic with normal objects that you can find at the grocery store.
And it makes it very challenging.
Now here are the rules for the challenger round.
Each team will be given the same three everyday items to use at least once during an original routine.
A guitar, jumbo-sized dominos, and a tutu.
You will be judged on three criteria creativity, deception, and showmanship.
Northern California's Alex Ramon and Chris Oberle are the first to perform.
And they've already put their routine together, so let's see what they're planning on.
Tutus.
Tu that's the first thing you want to talk about? - No no.
- You can wear it.
I was thinking, 'cause that's all you.
No, I don't - There's no way - Pink's not really my color.
- Guitar and dominos.
- Dominos.
All right, so, like, if we vanish them.
Like, if we take a domino, make it vanish, right? - And then the five-four comes out of the guitar.
- Nice.
That'll be awesome.
See if that guitar fits in here.
- There's no way.
It's impossible.
- Yeah.
Well, here's a smaller guitar.
It might be easier using a smaller guitar.
Look.
That's interesting.
I mean, attention where we throw it.
It's important to note there are no camera tricks on "Wizard Wars.
" Chris and Alex, show us what you've got.
We're going to show you something that you've never seen before.
And will never see again.
Sawing a magician in half.
With a tutu.
Chris, are you ready? Ready.
Here we go.
This is embarrassing! Yeah! Come on! You see that? - My name is Chris Oberle.
- My name is Alex Ramon.
And we have a confession to make.
We hid something in here.
Now we're not going to tell you what it is or where it is.
And we'll get back to that later.
That's right.
Right now we'd like to act out for you a major problem that every single magician experiences.
It happens every time we meet new people and it goes something like this.
Scene.
Hi, my name is Alex Ramon.
I'm a magician.
Oh, you're a musician.
Nice! What do you play? No, I'm a magician.
Well, can you play that guitar? Eventually you just go along with it.
Uh, yeah, but I'd rather play my guitar.
Snap! Do that again.
I wasn't really watching.
I usually don't do requests.
But in this case, we'll do it again.
Oh, man! - Yeah.
- That was awesome.
So when we found out that we had dominos, it was really easy for us to figure out what we were gonna to do with them, because we have no social lives and we play dominos all the time.
Speak for yourself.
I have a social life.
But I still play dominos.
And as a magician, we can make dominos appear whenever we want and need.
And we need some right now.
Thank you.
It's raining dominos.
Chris is going to take this bowl of dominos into the audience.
And we'll have this lovely young lady right here - What is your name? - Liz.
- Liz, I would like you to name any domino - Any one.
Please name it out loud.
One-four.
One-four.
- Got it? - Perfect.
One-four.
Okay, now what I want you to do is I want you to take this domino and I want you to write your name real big across the back of that domino.
After you do that, write your phone number on there, too.
Just joking.
Okay, the thing is magic is a visual art.
But think about it.
Have you ever really heard magic? What does magic sound like? Magic sounds like this.
Really? Thank you.
Go ahead, continue.
So tonight, I'm gonna give you all the opportunity to see and hear magic for the very first time.
So watch closely, but listen very carefully.
Wait wait wait wait! Shh, listen! Listen listen listen listen.
Shh.
Wait.
- Oh! - Did you hear that? That was the sound of magic.
Sometimes magic sounds like a domino falling into a guitar.
- Literally.
- Liz, stand up.
Join us onstage.
Careful going up these stairs.
This guitar has been here this guitar has been here since before you signed a domino.
Pick up the guitar and shake it.
Shake it, go ahead.
There's something inside.
Now look in there.
Is there a domino inside? - This is - This is the hardest part.
- Yeah.
- Oh, yeah.
- Right there? - Now I'm going to cut the guitar strings.
Okay, I want you to take this a stick with sticky stuff on it.
I want you to take your domino out.
Good.
Show the audience.
With her name on it, that she picked.
Right there, right there.
Wait wait, there's more.
Remember we said magic is a visual art.
The question always arises, "How did you do that?" How did the domino get inside the guitar? But see, that's the wrong question.
The real question is where did the domino get inside the guitar? Because this guitar - is actually completely solid.
- Solid.
This is solid wood.
There is no way in or out.
Completely solid.
Knock on it, hit it.
- Ah! - Go ahead.
You're going to take this, pass it around, make sure the judges see it.
But I'm going to tell you what we hid.
We hid a domino prediction.
And that prediction is to an outcome of a game.
This game will be played by two of our judges.
And we're requesting that Penn & Teller play this game.
So we have two colored dominos inside this.
Which one do you want? - I'll take black.
- Black.
So I want you to take the black dominos.
Now Penn selected black, and that means Teller, you will make the first move.
Guys, remember, this is quick-play dominos.
So grab a domino, Teller.
Start you off.
Uh, uh, uh, I have to go somewhere else.
- It's intense, it's intense.
- It is.
- And keep going.
- A double.
- Six sideways.
- Exactly.
- And there you go.
- Finish the game! The last two numbers that you guys played - Your last number here is? - A two.
- And the last number there is? - A three.
- Three.
- So now we will tell you where - our hidden domino is.
- Please.
Remember, the last numbers you have in your game - is two-three.
- Two-three.
The hidden domino is underneath the table, Teller.
Right where you are.
Reach underneath the table.
It's been there this entire time.
Hold up the domino.
Hold it up high.
Does it match two-three? Hold it high! That's two-three! It matches.
Perfect.
Chris and Alex, everybody! All right, well, let's find out what the judges thought of your performance.
Penn & Teller? We loved the pulling the guitars out.
Seeing a fairly full-sized guitar produced, and a couple of them seemed really nice.
And I like I liked the disrespect for the guitar.
I liked that very very much.
It kind of brought back the Who and the Clash.
Probably would have like it more if you smashed it, but you can't get what you want, can you? I did want to see the tutus come back again in another magical way, not just to be worn.
But it was fun that you got to you involved really everyone.
Um, the double guitar production was awesome.
I kind of expected you to pull one out.
And then when you went back in to do the second one, 'cause everyone as a magician, everyone always asks you, "Do it again.
" And I thought that was kind of fun to bring that in.
We've all had that experience, everyone in the room is like, "Oh, I've been there.
" And you did it again.
That was kind of fun.
And we just kind of fell into this scene, right there with you.
And the "Scene," it was great.
I really enjoyed your acting and your performance of it.
So really wonderful job.
I loved how you came out and just grabbed the audience right away.
Everybody was just like, "All right, we're going to saw somebody in half with a tutu," and everybody's like, "What's that gonna look like? That's amazing.
" And then I do love the proof of using the stick to grab the domino out, 'cause that proved it was hollow at one time.
So when it became solid, that's when it became a trick.
- Good job, guys.
- Thank you.
We'll see if Joel and Nathan can top this performance when we return.
I'm Justin Flom, and I'm going to show you a magic trick using a knife and a napkin.
Roll up the knife into the napkin.
You can actually change it into a spoon.
Not only that, I'm going to show you how to do this.
So get a napkin, get some silverware, and you'll be able to fool your friends.
Stick around.
Welcome back to "Wizard Wars.
" Joel and Nathan already put their routine together, so let's take a look at how they did it.
Here's a domino idea.
Tell me what you think about this.
- Okay.
- So we've got domino, give it a little shake.
Oh, that's sweet.
Dude, we got lots of stuff in here, man.
- There is lots of stuff.
- Check this out, dude.
How quickly can you solve a Rubik's Cube? - I take the stickers off.
- You do? Without cheating.
Check it out.
I'll give it a couple more little twists.
Nice.
Oh, there's a guitar case! Dude, we can do something with the guitar case.
We can do something with the guitar - Yeah, we can make a guitar appear.
- That's a good idea.
Let's make sure it actually fits in the case.
It fits! Okay, so I think we can do something with if there was like oh, there's a flap here.
Oh, there's, like, extra strings and guitar picks.
- Cool.
- We can do something with the guitar picks.
Joel and Nathan, the stage is yours.
What up! My name is Joel Meyers.
I'm Nathan Kranzo.
And tonight we're going to tell you a little bit - about our past.
- That's right.
We didn't always want to be magicians.
True story originally we wanted to be musicians.
Rock stars.
So tonight we get to live that dream for you guys tonight.
You might have noticed the guitar we'll get to that in a second.
But first, the one prop that every rock star needs.
Girls! Dominos.
So we'll take some of these dominos we got double fives.
Got a few dominos here.
Yep, they're all different.
They come that way so we can tell them apart.
Too much All right, we'll dump the dominos just a few of these into the tray, the bag.
And reach in and grab a random domino.
- And we've got the - That is not a domino.
That's a guitar pick.
That is a guitar they're all guitar picks! Except for one.
- Missed one.
- Kind of missed one.
It's okay.
I think maybe it's a sign.
- It's a double two.
- Double two.
You mean a tutu? Funny thing about this.
I probably could have been a rock star if I didn't meet that crazy dancer chick who totally broke my heart.
Sometimes I still think about her and the way that she smelled.
That's normal.
This is kind of disgusting.
I don't want you guys to see this, So I'm going to save you a little bit of grossness.
But if you want to watch, look directly at Joel's mouth.
If you want to see some magic.
He's going to eat the tutu faster than you've ever seen.
Watch as he slowly eats the tutu and it becomes faster and faster.
It will be sucked into his mouth.
As he continues to chew, the tutu will be sucked in, smaller and smaller, until there's just a few inches left, sticking out of his mouth.
One more chew, into his mouth, through his esophagus and on his person.
What? That's right combat boots and a tutu.
Well, the irony of us wanting to be musicians is that we were given a guitar for "Wizard Wars.
" - Yeah! - So Check it out.
Over here we've got a guitar case.
Inside the guitar case, we have a guitar.
Inside the strings of the guitar, we have a guitar pick.
Check it out.
- Inside is the guitar.
Here's where it gets crazy.
- Can you see okay? - Can you see this? - Here's where it gets crazy.
Check it out.
Guitar pick.
- Nathan? - Nathan will take that pick, he will place it into his palm, he'll make it vanish and make it reappear behind my ear, just like your uncle used to do, like a boss.
He's going to make it vanish again, make it reappear behind his knee.
He must have a trick knee.
He'll make it disappear one more time, make it reappear someplace nobody knows, behind his nose, in his nose.
That's disgusting.
Now he's going to come out into the audience and pick a person.
Literally.
You, miss, please pick a place on Nate's person.
- Anyplace.
- But be nice.
- Yeah, preferably a pocket.
The left pocket.
- This one? Nate once again will put the pick in his palm, make it disappear, make it reappear inside his left pocket.
- He's got one also in his - The left back pocket? Okay.
- The back pocket, yeah.
- The right pocket? Cool.
No, he's doesn't okay.
I've got them everywhere, just in case.
That was really good, dude.
That was good.
He's got some in his shoe.
They're every it would have worked no matter what.
Everywhere but the left pocket! The anti-prediction.
Here's a really crazy part.
Nate is going to approach Penn with the pick.
He's going to ask Penn - to put his penmanship on that pick - Excuse me.
- using a pen.
- Excuse me, sorry.
Is that your toe or luggage? Sorry, okay.
- So take the pen.
- Here's a pen.
Hey, can we get a camera over here, please? That would be great, get a camera right there.
Put your penmanship on Go ahead and put your penmanship there, Penn.
- Okay.
- Perfect.
And then, Teller, you're going to sign the other side.
Here's where it gets crazy.
- Thanks so much, guys.
- Watch Nate's hand.
He's going to keep that pick in full view the entire time.
Nothing funny, nothing in his hands.
He's got that pick.
Here's where it gets crazy.
Keep that pick up.
I'm gonna take the pick very slowly, very fairly, right here.
I'm gonna take the pick and put it back into the strings of the guitar.
Here's where it gets crazy.
Check this out.
Into the strings of the guitar, right here.
Check it out.
Now wouldn't it be amazing if whenever we close this guitar case, that pick vanished completely? Wouldn't that be amazing? Wait, can we do that? No, but that would be amazing.
There's got to be a way to do that.
Penn & Teller could do it, for sure.
They could probably do it.
They're super awesome.
We're going to try it anyways.
- Here we go.
- Here we go, ready? - One, two, three! - Three! Check it out! The guitar has completely vanished.
And inside are the dominos! In the back of the room, the cameraman is holding a guitar case.
Check it out! Put the guitar case in front of Christen, sir! Christen, slide the guitar case over to Penn & Teller.
Penn & Teller, if you could open up that case yourself.
We're not going to come close to it.
- Okay.
- Four latches, four latches.
Inside the case there is a guitar.
And to prove that it's the same guitar, - there is a pick.
- In here is a guitar pick.
Would you please take out that pick, Penn? Is that your initials on one side? On one side, it says "Penn Jillette" And on the other side? Teller, is that your signature? And on the other side is an ampersand that Teller drew.
- Yes! - That's rock and roll! Thank you guys for letting us live our dreams! Whoo! - Thanks so much, you guys.
- Thank you, guys! Let's find out what the judges thought of your performance.
Christen? I think you guys have really fun personalities.
And I loved that you picked this kind of rock-star feel, 'cause it definitely matches your guys' aesthetic.
And I think that's really cool.
I liked the pick appearance.
Actually, I thought that was really fun.
I loved that tutu the eating it was I would never have expected to do that.
But I feel like it could have come back around, or been used again, because you guys used the picks a lot and you used the guitar a lot and you used the dominos a lot.
You could have brought that tutu back around, but overall I thought it was really fun, and I really enjoyed your performance.
Well, guys, I loved the creativity part of it, with I mean, a tutu.
I mean, who saw eating a tutu as an effect? And I agree with you that it almost we wanted to see it come back, maybe inside the guitar or something like that.
Especially 'cause it looks so good on you.
Right.
And I also liked the use of the picks.
It was almost like a playing-card type of thing, something you can sign.
Just outside-the-box thinking is what I love.
And thank you very much.
The guitar vanish looked nice.
The pick getting back here was really deceptive.
And yet, we had to talk about it before we really realized how deceptive it was.
And that troubled us a little bit.
We both loved the eating the tutu.
Uh, that is a real a real change-up, and looked it looked really nice, it looked really funny.
It was really tangential to the other stuff.
We liked that too.
Thank you.
We'll find out who will be advancing to take on the Wizards when we come back.
Coming up right after the break Time to show you how you can take a knife and change it into a spoon.
So get a napkin, get some silverware, and you'll be able to fool your friends.
Stick around.
Justin Flom here.
Earlier, I showed you how you can take a knife and change it into a spoon.
And the secret, pull back the curtain.
You'll see the spoon is already underneath the napkin.
Your friends don't know about this.
Lay the napkin out over the spoon.
When you set the knife down, you're going to grab everything, including the secret spoon, and roll it up.
Wait for these corners to switch places, and now you pull on the new corners, and it will reveal the spoon.
If you're a Wizard, you can take it a step further.
You can change the spoon into a fork.
Two teams of challengers just created magical performances using the same three everyday objects.
Penn & Teller, the judges, have had a chance to evaluate both performances.
It's time to announce a winner.
Who's it going to be? You know, this is the first time I think, when doing this show, that we went back and forth.
We actually decided one winner and then went back and decided a different winner, and then had to argue a little bit.
Um, what we decided to do was to go with the last trick.
'Cause what you leave people with, what you finish with, seems really important.
And the pick trick where the pick ended up back here was a pretty good trick and kind of, sort of fooled us.
And Teller said something that I'm afraid I'm going to blame the whole thing on Teller Teller said he didn't know how to play dominos, but he knew how that last trick was done.
So just by a squeaker in deception, in a very very close race, it goes to Nathan and Joel.
Very good.
Nicely done! Nathan and Joel, you will face two of our Wizards in the Wizard war.
If you beat them, you get $10,000.
But before we talk Wizards, let's talk rules.
Each team must use the same four objects associated with the 1970s at least once in a routine.
A beanbag chair, fuzzy dice, 8-track tapes, and a leisure suit.
Tonight's Wizards are Gregory and Shimshi.
We've got a workshop and a magic shop upstairs that has everything you need to turn these items into world-class magic.
So off you go! While the teams work on their acts, Justin has a brand-new piece of magic that he'd like to perform for us.
Thank you! Thank you very much.
I'm Justin Flom, one of the Wizards.
Uh, plastic wrap.
I hate plastic wrap.
It's hard to tear, it sticks to things that you don't want it to, it sticks to itself.
It sticks to everything except what you need it to stick to your plate of pizza.
So what we're going to do is I wanted to create a piece of magic using plastic wrap.
And Billy's going to help me out.
Billy, can you come up onstage? Give her a big round of applause.
We'll give Billy the plastic wrap.
We got a little cabinet up onstage with a curtain and a pole that Billy now gets to wrap me to.
- So, Billy, come on around.
- All right.
Let me get yeah, I'll take a whole bunch.
- You gonna take that? - Yeah.
- And go ahead.
- Nice and tight.
- Wrap me tight.
- There we go.
Excellent, this will be good.
This is perfect and weird.
And I'm also getting really dizzy.
- More? - Slow down, keep going.
- Here we go.
- A couple more, I think we can do.
This is also a redneck girdle.
- It's it's good.
- Like that? And can you tear it? Yeah? Is that it's hard.
Very good.
Okay.
And, uh Yeah, be gentle.
- That's that's good.
- Don't be jealous.
And that's his phone.
- That that's my phone.
- That's what that is.
It's on vibrate.
Okay, now, Billy, you're going to be with me in the cabinet here.
Uh, but what I need you to do is I need you to grab that curtain and you're going to close that curtain for me.
And you want me in the cabinet with you? I know it's awkward.
- Just yeah.
- Okay.
Just so you know, that there's nothing going on between me and Justin.
Yeah.
So go ahead and close that curtain This is strictly a working relationship.
- That's right.
- Okay? Close the curtain.
Very good.
Hang on, I'm gonna just adjust that a little bit right there.
I think I should that's good right there.
Give it up for Billy! Billy Kidd! - And I'm Justin.
- Let's hear it for Billy and Justin! The challengers are working hard on their routines, so let's check in on how they're doing.
I think you should try on this jacket, for sure.
I think that looks like a Kranzo jacket right there.
That's, like, made out of straight polyester.
You look good.
What do you think? He looks good.
Look at him! It's "cash-mere.
" Cash-mere? But the pockets are cool.
We've got two pockets on the outside.
We got a pocket on the inside.
So we can do something with the 8-track tapes, maybe make the 8-track tapes disappear? That wha? That's cool.
Oh, we've got some moustaches.
I "moustache" you a question.
We could add this to the leisure suit.
And maybe we cut all this and cut a piece off? And then that turns into this? What if we took this and opened this up and then basically took had someone from the audience pull out several handfuls and put them in a paper bag? - Mm-hmm.
- And then we snap our fingers, do some type of magic dance or wave a magic wand or something - Magic dance? - zip this back up, and now they open up the bag - and the bag is full of candy.
- Dude, I like that! That's pretty sweet.
Yeah.
Coming up You guys remember the cool fuzzy dice, right? the challengers put on their '70s-theme best.
- Sonny Bono! - Sonny Bono.
Welcome back.
It's time for the main event, the Wizard War.
There's $10,000 with your names on it, if you can out-trick the Wizards using the same four everyday objects a beanbag chair, fuzzy dice, 8-track tapes and a leisure suit.
All right, challengers, the stage is yours.
Hey, guys, I'm Joel Meyers.
- I'm Nathan Kranzo.
- And we are gonna show you how everything was better in the '70s.
Yeah, you guys remember the cool fuzzy dice, right? Yeah, a little string.
Nate's going to take some scissors, he's going to cut the string right off of these fuzzy dice, just like that.
Whoa, look at that.
Check it out, with a little bit of magic.
Yeah.
Now Joel is going to go into the audience and find a random person.
You look random.
What's your name? - Yoko.
- Yoko.
You're like a celebrity waiting to happen.
Yoko, check it out.
Got some fuzzy dice here.
You are going to roll these dice.
You can take it by the string, however you want to do it.
Just do it your most clever way.
Go ahead.
Roll the dice! Yeah, that's good.
- All right, so what do we have? Six, eight, nine.
- What do we got? We've got 12 classic hits from yesteryear.
- Yep.
- All the good ones.
We've got Elton John, David Bowie.
All the good guys.
James Brown.
You get the idea.
So I will count down to the ninth 8-track cassette.
Here we go one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
It lands on Sonny Bono.
Check it out.
Here's the crazy part, guys.
Over here we have a prediction.
- Here we go.
- So here it is, check it out, our prediction.
- Sonny Bono! - Sonny Bono.
Yeah! In the flesh.
Kind of.
The hair, the glasses.
the moustache, the leisure suit, - the cool sleeve - Sleeve tattoos.
Well, not only is Sonny here tonight, but he's wearing the indestructible leisure suit of "Wizard Wars.
" See, I'm gonna just, like, pull a thread off of the suit here.
Just like this.
Check this out.
Nate's going to cut a button off and I'm going to put that button in my mouth.
Check it out.
Watch the button go directly into Joel's mouth.
He will swallow the button, he will show his mouth empty.
Watch closely as the string is lowered into his mouth.
If this works, Joel should be able to secure that button back onto the string in just a few seconds.
We've got a button! Check it out! That is intense.
Look at that! Nate, go on, take the button off, bro! Nate's going to take the button.
Keep your eyes on the button.
If you watch closely, on the count of three, something very astonishing will happen with this button.
Watch.
One, two, three.
What? It's attached too! Check that out! That is actually attached.
Look at that! Nothing like a leisure suit to remind you of the elegance of the '70s.
You know what else was better in the '70s? The furniture.
'70s' furniture was so great.
Yeah, beanbag chair.
Check it out.
Beanbag chairs were awesome.
- What is your name, sir? - Sky.
Sky, if you don't mind helping us, we'll - do you have - Sky, you have a cell phone on you, man? - Yeah.
- That would be great.
We'll get it right back to you.
Don't worry, Sky.
We're just gonna take the cell phone.
We're going to place the cell phone into the bag.
- Into the brown paper bag.
- Here's where it gets crazy.
Check it out.
I'm going to take that cell phone and I'm going to cause it to vanish right before your very eyes.
I'm going to slowly fold up the bag so you can't miss a thing, one bit at a time, just like this.
Here's where it gets crazy, man.
Mazel tov! It's gone! It has reappeared in the inner jacket pocket of the leisure suit.
Check it out.
Nathan, reach in there, bro.
Inside the inner jacket pocket is your cell phone! - Whoo! - Yes! You have the new "Wizard Wars" app? You do now.
$75.
99.
You're welcome.
Check it out.
You can keep your phone, but we need you to do one more thing.
I need you to would you grab a couple of handfuls of this - Yeah, grab a couple handfuls.
- green bally stuff? And just drop it in the paper bag for me? Grab four or five handfuls? Be a little bit overzealous.
Do a lot with the balls.
Let's give a big round of applause for Sky.
Did a great job.
Thank you so much.
Now it's time to shake up this stuffing.
And we'll close it up.
And maybe we need a better magic word this time? Check it out, guys.
In the place of the stuffing, there is now candy! Check this out, you guys! In the beanbag chair there's taffies and candy! Literally, there's tons of it in the beanbag chair.
Look at this.
The stuffing has changed into candy! - There's candy everywhere.
- Look under your seat.
- There's candy! - Everything was better in the '70s! - Thank you! - Thank you! Let's find out what the judges thought of this performance.
I liked that you used pieces of the leisure suit.
The button was a little small, but I liked that you took it off and you ate it and you pulled it back out.
I thought that was very fun.
You guys have an awesome presence.
And I really like watching you guys perform because you guys have such fun personalities.
I kind of want to be one of your spectators next time because you guys really interact well with them, and overall, awesome, awesome, awesome.
- Thank you guys.
- Thank you.
I like the energy you guys bring to the stage.
But I think the creativity on this routine compared to last routine, uh, was a little bit lower than I was expecting.
Because there was no real reason for the candy.
With all due respect, sir, candy never needs a justification.
Heck yeah! There's also a principle in magic that I think we saw demonstrated here, which is what's often abbreviated as the too-perfect principle.
When you're doing the prediction, there has to be a couple different ways it could be done, or you lead people right back to the truth.
I'm referring, of course, to the Sonny Bono prediction in that, once you have that draped and back there, and you've given us the reveal, you've also given us automatically arrows to the method because there's only one.
I love seeing seeing beanbag chairs ripped apart.
During the '70s, which I was alive during, all you ever wanted to do was knife beanbag chairs.
Uh, and you never ever need a justification for candy.
We'll see the Wizards' routine when we get back.
Coming up I'm missing something, so let me try this.
There is one thing.
Ho! That is so '70s.
the Wizards go back in time.
Tell me, how do I look now, huh? Welcome back to "Wizard Wars.
" Our Wizards already built a routine using '70s-themed items, so let's see how they're planning on getting funky on the challengers.
All right, well, first things first.
I want to get into the leisure suit.
I want to feel the '70s.
Those are pajamas.
I know, I know, I'm missing something, - so let me try this.
- There is one thing.
I'm going with you on this.
Ho! - That is so '70s.
- Thank you, appreciate it.
We're bringing theater into this.
We'll create a whole world of the '70s.
Okay, I like that.
So you're going to sketch and I'll use a what do you call it? - A - Computer.
- Oh, did I go back too far? - Yeah.
Come see this.
Tell me what you think.
So what if all this is, like, Mylar? Right? And you're, like, in a '70s world, - and I'm like in 2015.
- Oh, I like this.
- Right? - So it's a different millennium.
I'm here.
So picture this.
Here's the Mylar.
It's like this wide, all the way down to the ground.
- Okay.
- So that's the portal.
- Right.
- So if I took something and I put it through the portal, that would change.
- I like that.
- Give me some skin.
- You don't - Is that how? It's been too long.
I don't know.
All right, Wizards, take it away.
Welcome to the '70s.
Ladies and gentlemen, Gregory Wilson! Yay! I feel so embarrassed.
No no no, this is this is not the '70s.
This is just a portal to the '70s.
And that's where this comes from.
It's not exactly the '70s, though.
It's not the '70s? How about if I go back, I don't know, just a little bit further like this watch.
Don't look away.
What are those over there? Hey, an 8-track tape! You want to know what this thing is? You can actually get eight songs on one track.
Isn't that crazy? I know, it's amazing.
- That's amazing.
- Eight.
That is incredible.
That is crazy.
I'm going to show you what we're going to do today, though.
- Okay, what do you got? - Today you can take eight 8-tracks.
- You can take eight 8-tracks - See what happens.
on one device.
You can have so many songs there.
Okay, I don't buy this.
Let's go back Dude! No, seriously, you know what? This makes me feel like a game-show host.
I say that we're going to try the portal - Should I do the portal again? - I think so.
Go back to the '70s? Game-show host? - I think so.
- Ready for the game-show host? I'll come over here like this.
Tell me, how do I look now? Let's play the match game! Let's play it, ladies and gentlemen.
- Sir, what is your name? - Jeff.
Jeff.
Do you mind coming over here to the stage? - Sure.
- Yes? Actually, why don't you just sit on this beanbag - we have for you? - You're the eyes and the ears for the audience.
Here's what we're going to do I'm going to give you one of the dice.
And let's let's get some more dice.
We're gonna throw 'em.
Everybody catch 'em.
Are you guys ready? - Random as possible.
- Yeah? Here we go.
That's not right.
Go ahead, throw it - Throw it over your head.
- He cheated.
- Okay.
- All right, we'll go this way.
- What is your number? - Six.
Number six.
Throw it to me.
All right.
And your number? - Four.
- Four! Throw it to me, please.
All right.
And okay, number three.
- All right, and? - Three.
Three again, all right.
Go ahead.
And what about you? Two.
Number two, and the final number is? - Six.
- Six! - The final number is six.
- Six fuzzy dice from the '70s.
We got six, three, three, three we meant that.
two, six.
It's a match! Amazing! Isn't that amazing? - Do you guys want to know what the match was? - Yeah! It's the amount of hair I've lost since the '70s! Wow, look at that! Touch it.
Sir, could you please stand up for me? Yes? And come over here for me.
Um, yeah.
Could you read out those numbers for me out loud one more time? - Six, three - No, you have to do it like a game-show host.
Six, three, three, three, two, six! Now we're going to tell you what the real match was.
- Are you guys ready? - Yeah! That number is the exact number of beans inside the bag.
Do I have to open it up? There it is.
Count it! Count it! - Count it, count! - No, no, no, no, no! We don't want to do that, we don't want to do that.
Will you just rip off the tag the tag? - Okay, hold on.
- Yep.
Oh, look at this.
You're going to love this.
What look at that, right there.
"Do not remove under penalty of law.
" It's a little late for that.
- Okay, how about this one here? - Actually, this is the right tag.
'Cause it says "refills" on it.
Can you see that? Yeah? Can you guys see this? Can you read it out loud for me? - Right here, like this.
- Six? Just read that out loud.
"633326.
" Six, three, three, three, two, six! It's a match! All right, let's put this over here.
Actually, I'm the only one who kind of feels like I'm not matching.
- You want to do that match? - I do.
I want to do the match.
I don't know about this blue shirt.
Should I get off the stage? Watch? - Okay, watch for the match.
- No, no, no, wait.
- I want to try something.
- Okay.
Can I try the portal? - You're gonna try the portal? - I am.
- I'm gonna try the portal.
- I'm gonna stand here.
- You guys watch him.
- All right.
- Actually - Go for the match! Watch for it, watch for it! - Go for the full match.
- I'm feeling it.
I'm feeling it, I'm feeling it.
All right, here we go.
Whoo-hoo! Thank you guys very much! Let's find out what the judges thought of that performance, starting with Christen.
The change that you did, Greg, from the record to the 8-track, I loved.
I loved the portal idea.
Loved how you guys used it.
I would have like to see you arrive at the reveal of the numbers a little bit faster.
Overall, I really enjoyed kind of the package of the routine itself and how everything kind of flowed into the next trick very nicely.
And I love the leisure suits on you guys.
I want one.
I want to all do this together.
I mean, putting these routines together in a short amount of time is really really difficult.
And so that's why I like to look at creative ties.
And I really liked the tie of the dice to the beanbag.
I actually I mean, that's a really hard leap to think about, like, what would a number do with a beanbag? My favorite part about it was your showmanship is so dead-on.
And so thank you very much for a great show.
I liked the portal idea.
I liked the predictions are being done with the dice and paid off in the beanbag chair.
And you both look glorious in those purple outfits.
Thank you, thank you.
We'll find out who won the Wizard War when we come back.
Okay, it's time.
Which team is the winner of tonight's Wizard War? Penn & Teller? We saw, I think, the hardest competition we've had on this show.
Really really hard objects.
And we saw people struggling to make those objects into magic.
When it all comes down to seeing people work that hard and struggling, it turns out that as far as showmanship and being able to think on your feet and onstage kind of wins out in the end.
And we see the Wizards here win a very difficult competition.
Congratulations, Wizards.
Thank you, Joel and Nathan.
Thank you, judges.
Good night from "Wizard Wars"!
