Others in attendance-- assorted friends, business associates and local dignitaries, and our own esteemed Sheriff, Matthew Donner.
And finally, Mr.
Tyler Creed-- An enigma of sorts.
Either your garden variety of real estate magnet/ladies' man or your just plain sociopath.
( Reciting prayer in foreign language ) Amen.
( Howling ) ( other wolves join the howling ) That's different.
(Music plays) Thank you very much.
Break out the shark repellant.
There's blood in the water.
Tell you what, sweetie, why don't you take those to the kitchen.
I gotta show the colors.
No disrespect to Will Cates, he was a good man, for his time.
But then again, so was Herbert Hoover.
Excuse me, Ty, could I have a word with you? - In a second.
- Now.
Everybody knows you go for a run, all bets are off.
"Hunting accident" huh? They happen.
Then I don't suppose you don't object coming down to the station for a gunpowder residue test.
Not at all.
If you don't object to a positive result.
I shoot traps with Buddy Hooks every Tuesday and Thursday.
You can check it out.
- Drink? - NO.
Cancer would've eaten him up in a month or two.
Who would go to all that trouble to cap him? Gee, I don't know, Ty, you tell me.
Who do you think would? (Music plays) Nobody comes instantly to mind.
I hope neither of you mind me saying you have such beautiful hands.
- Suki is a hand model.
- Oh, is that so? And you? - I'm a regular model.
- Oh.
And I am a seven thousand year old high school biology teacher.
- ( laughing ) - Laughter-- Finally.
Even at a funeral.
Just stare into the void and moon it.
V.
? Matt .
Sorry-- Do you want some time to yourself? NO.
NO.
I don't mind.
I just couldn't breathe in there.
They're all asking how I'm doing, but they don't really want to know-- not really.
I know how it is.
That's right you do, don't you? It was a long time ago.
Still So, how are you-- Really? I can't sleep at night.
I keep forgetting simple words for things like "coat" and "chair" and my shoes hurt, and I'm afraid I'm going to start screaming and I may never stop.
You? Oh, I deal with it like I usually do.
Throw myself into the job.
( laughing ) This was not an accident.
I know.
And it's not going to stop with Willard.
I'm afraid not.
You should be really proud.
Your Dad was an amazing guy.
And everyone in town liked him.
Right.
They wouldn't be here if they didn't respect him.
Respect? Give me a break.
Phonies, every last one of them.
Look at them.
Eating his food, drinking his whisky.
Take Malachai the clown wasn't fit to carry my Dad's briefcase.
Makes me want to puke.
Sons of bitches.
Any one of them could've pulled the trigger.
It's a .
36 caliber.
Colt-Navy.
Model 1851.
You say somebody was killed with this? Yeah.
Colt-Navy.
I've got one very similar to that.
Take a feel.
That's a big surprise cause he'd be the first person probably killed with a Colt-Navy in about a century.
Lucky guy- Not particularly.
'Cause that is one nasty round.
( Buzzer ringing ) You know anybody up my way that might own one? I seem to remember one fellow.
Yeah, did some business with.
Hang on.
This man had a decent collection.
Mostly pace-Civil War sidearms.
Ahh, yeah.
He's gotta Navy.
What's his name? Cates .
Willard Cates.
(Music plays) I was heading out and I thought I'd offer my condolences.
I don't think I'll ever get used to it.
You look like you're holding up.
Managing.
Under the circumstances.
Yes .
Circumstances.
One might call them Tragic? Brutal.
No doubt.
But at least it's over.
He's not in pain anymore.
That's true.
And whoever did this I'm sure believed they had his best interest at heart.
One might even call it an act of Mercy.
Why not? You gave a thoughtful service.
Thank you.
Will always loved the 93rd Psalm.
"Forever in memory alive.
" Please, if there's anything I can do-- I'll let you know.
-- To ease the burden of your grief.
( Panting ) (Music plays) Luke, my boy.
We're in dire need of ice.
Hey, Molly-- Is this thing working? Molly: Yeah-- It's just quiet.
Phone hasn't rung all night.
Kind of creepy.
It's the calm before the storm.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
( Horn honking ) Yeah, it looks like we got another 502.
Highway Nine and Rimview Road.
It's Miranda.
Jeez, not again.
(Music plays) Matt! Matt, it's not Miranda.
She's here in her cell.
Matt, are you there? Matt, return to your unit-- Do you hear me? Miranda, please-- how many times do we have to go through this? ( Gunshots ) (Music plays) They say you enter the sweat lodge to cleanse your soul, and to ask the Great Spirit for a special intention.
But, I guess if I ask for anything else, I'd come off as pretty greedy, huh? ( laughing ) So, are you girls ready for a little dip in the lake? ( Whispering ) She's embarrassed to say that she doesn't have her bathing suit.
Suki is fine just the way she is.
( Speaking foreign language ) Japanese love poem-- 12th century.
( Doorbell ringing ) Oh, attention earthlings, the pizza has landed.
Keep my seat warm.
Hi.]
( Imitating fanfare ) (Music plays) (moans) You got three entrance wounds, two exits.
You're still sporting' a slug, chief.
Can you get it out? What, are you out of your mind? I'm wide open to suggestions.
Hold this .
This ain't cutting' it.
Matt! Matt! You can't tell anybody I'm here.
If they find out, they'll send somebody back to finish the job.
Sophia, you gotta protect Sophia.
- Protect her.
- Lift your arm.
Ruby: Luke? Luke, is that you? Ruby.
Who would've thought? What? It's a lot easier to talk to dad when he's dead.
( laughing ) Bang.
Bang.
Bang.
Three shots-- AC? .
45 Caliber.
Close Range.
Probably close enough to singe his shirt.
Donner's .
38 never even clears his holster.
How do you know? Have you seen him at the range? If he'd gotten off a round, the shooter would be dead.
So Donner goes down over here.
He's unconscious or just maybe playing possum until the shooter takes off.
Then he drags himself back to his unit.
His bleeding.
.
.
he's got a radio Why doesn't he just call in a 1033? I don't know.
Maybe the shooter came back? Maybe he Finished Donner in his unit? That doesn't track.
Look at he rubber this guy burned.
NO.
When the shooter took off, he was gone for good.
Donner must've driven himself away.
Alright, get me an APB out on both vehicles.
Call the hospitals, Troopers, Search and Rescue.
Start checking the highways for any broken guardrails, any evidence a vehicle went over the side.
If only I'd been on patrol, he'd still be NO.
It's just a setup, Molly, you know that.
This wasn't about shooting a cop, this was about shooting Matt Donner.
( Phone rings ) Excuse me.
Kanin.
Man: Hi-- Remember me? Earl Buttrey? Yeah.
I saw your flyer at a Texaco off Route Five.
Boy she's got your motor running.
Where is Ruby Cates? Closer than you think.
But that's not our immediate problem.
Our immediate problem? Sophia Donner is in grave danger.
You have to take her someplace safe-- Now.
What are you Do not tell anyone where you've taken her.
There's no one you can trust.
Not in Wolf Lake.
- Who is this? - Goodbye, Mr.
Kanin.
So, what's it like? Living in the city? Planning on digging a tunnel? Or are you just going to jump right over the wire? As far as places to go where you can just just lose yourself in I don't think that places like that exist for people like us anymore.
So what are we going to do? I mean, are we screwed? I don't know.
( Wolf howling ) Okay, joke, okay? It has to be new, it has to be dirty and it has to be cruel.
Okay I gotta joke for you.
Ruby Cates and Tyler Creed grow old together.
(Music plays) You should be safe here for the time being.
If you were ever tempted to tell me what you know now's the time.
Alright, I'll tell you what I think.
I think there's a cult or something operating up here.
They hide behind the church on the Hill, but they've got a secret, or a plan of some kind, and they'll do anything to protect that.
I think they're violent.
I think they keep people here against their will, and they scare the hell out of everybody else.
And I think your dad was on to them.
Alright, then what? Sophia, your father is out there somewhere with three bullets in his gut and he's in danger.
Please, help me to help him.
Sophia, come on, damn it to hell! I need a place to start.
A foothold, anything Believe me, nothing I know will help you.
What is it with you people? You know how to use one of these? Why am I not surprised? That's me.
Otherwise, do not open that door.
Not for anybody.
(Music plays) ( shattering ) What the hell were you thinking? You know, Tyler, you're the one who's always going on about taking initiative.
I thought you'd be psyched.
Psyched? You tried to cap the sheriff.
How stupid is that? Yeah, well He was out of the game, Buddy.
In a self-imposed exile.
And what if he survived this little error in judgment, you think about that? He goes straight from zero to the Wrath of Khan.
Damn it! I was a click away from being the top man on the Hill, and you pulled this crap.
It was point-blank.
I don't think Donner's gonna be a problem.
Anytime your quarry takes that many hits, gets up and drives away, it's a problem! I'm not involved in this.
- I know.
- You gotta clean it up.
I will.
I had big plans for you, Buddy.
You were gonna be the new me.
We track the daughter.
She leads us to papa.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
Marie Marie.
(Music plays) Matt! Matt! Matt! Listen, you said you're open to suggestions.
I'm wide open.
Okay, you gotta make the change.
It'll accelerate the healing process.
I can't.
I made a promise to Marie.
I made a promise to Marie.
Sherman: Matt Matt! Shut up and listen! I ain't got time to argue.
You're losing a lot of blood and I can't stop it.
Yes, you can, and you know It doesn't work that way.
And you call yourself a friend? (Music plays) So what are the odds Miranda's got fire insurance? How are we going to process this? We're not-- It's a waste of time.
That's why he torched it.
Another dead end.
Not really.
It tells us this guy's not dumb.
(Music plays) But then again - Say "cheese.
" - What? They're taking our picture.
( Chuckling changes to coughing ) I missed the joke.
YOU are.
The Great Sherman Blackstone I've been hearing about since I was a kid.
Dumb card tricks better not ball you've got up your sleeve (Music plays) Here I am.
As ordered.
The nervous swain awaiting an answer.
Non-verbal mode, huh? My mind reading skills are a little rusty.
First my father and not Matt Donner.
How many more? Hey, those aren't on me.
Save it.
I know who's next on your list, and if anything happens to him.
If he has a motorcycle accident.
If his car is run off the road if he is hit by a meteor What? You're gonna chop up my liver with egg and onion? It's a start.
I love John Kanin and I will always love John Kanin.
No matter whose bed I have to sleep in, Tyler.
I'll take that as a yes.
It' showtime.
Molly: This sucks.
Looks better than most.
Freakin' banks recycle the hell out of these things.
There.
- It's useless.
- Can't they enhance it? Only in Oliver Stone movies.
Alright, call the DMV.
I want a run on all late model four-by-four's two-tone, lighter colors, blue maybe That's Donald Reese's truck.
- What? - Donald Reese.
You kill my car, you son of a bitch, I'll kick your ass.
How do you know? See the primer-patch in his quarter panel? - Mm-hm.
- My El Camino.
(Music plays) ( rattling ) ( gun cocking ) Is this about the C-minus I gave you on the midterms? (Music plays) Dad? Aw, Sherman, you son of a bitch.
Well, somebody's gotta try to talk some sense into you.
Baby, I'm sorry, I didn't want this.
At least your safe.
I'm going to be okay.
- No you're not.
- Sure.
I just need some rest.
Dad, Sherman told me everything.
Aw Please, you have to do it.
- Honey, I can't.
- No, no, please.
You have to do it right now.
It's what mom would want.
I'm gonna be alright.
I'm going to be alright.
Hang on.
Tell me she's going to be fine.
Tell me she's just going to be a normal little girl.
You'll be fine.
And protect her.
- Dad! I'll try Promise me you'll protect her from this insanity.
I'll try.
Dad, dad, please, Daddy! Please don't go! Please don't.
NO.
( Crying ) (Music plays) ( phone ringing ) Yeah.
Man: Time to clean up your mess.
- You found 'em? - Yeah, I found him.
He's at the teacher's house.
Kid too.
Pretty girl.
Breaks your heart, doesn't it? ( Dog barking ) (Music plays) John: It's him.
Find some cover-- Watch the back.
Get down! ( Gun firing ) ( gun firing ) What do we do? He's got a Bolt action.
He's only got four rounds, then he has gonna reload.
I'm charging him! ( Gun firing ) It's too far-- You'll never make it! Alright, cove me.
On three - One, two, three! ( Gunshots ) (Music plays) ( gun firing ) Don't-- don't do it.
Drop it, pal.
Listen to me, drop your weapon.
Drop it! Don't do it.
( Gunshots ) woman: Matthew.
Marie.
You always were so pigheaded.
Soph Soph, wake up.
- It's your mom.
- Don't wake her.
She's so beautiful.
Why are you doing this to her? I'm not doing anything to her.
I'm doing it for her.
Don't lie to me.
For sixteen years, not a day, and not a minute has gone by that I don't want to run again.
Why are you afraid? I'm afraid that once I started to run, I'll never be able to stop.
And I'd lose her.
We'd lose her.
What the hell You win.
As usual.
You can do this.
(Music plays) t gasping ) ( groaning ) You're dad's going to be just fine now.
(Music plays) One cannot truly love, or accept love, unless one comes ultimately to love one's self.
Tyler Creed, entrepreneur, visionary man of the world.
Let's not keep your sister waiting.
I know about you and my mother.
Are you going to alert the media? What have we got here? A hundred and sixty-pounds of coiled teenage fury? You're not going to tear up my family anymore.
The last thing your mother needs today is a kid not thinking too clearly, trying to clean up a mess that's isn't there.
Do I have what it takes to finish what I started? Gotta ask that question before you throw down on a guy.
I'll remember that for next time.
Let's get to it.
This is nuts.
There's an agenda in this clan that's bigger than both of us.
It can't be stopped.
Your mother and your sister understand that.
Like your father understood it.
My father would've ripped your throat out.
This isn't about mom-- no.
This is about the old man.
There's your pain.
There's the payback you're looking for.
Can't blame you.
I'm not the man you're looking for, but he's out of there.
Hunt him down.
Make him your first kill.
Caribou chili and uh moose mousse .
Ass end of the day.
You're hungry, I hope.
What? Nothing.
You just look kinda puzzled, like you got a whole bunch of questions.
I know better than that.
The sheriff's blood is all over the road, but he says he was on an overnighter in Tahoe.
Which means I just shot a guy for no apparent reason.
Other than the fact that he was trying to shoot me for no apparent reason.
Oh, and don't forget about Willard Cates.
Dead by blunderedbuss.
Let me see, that' makes my prime suspects, um Davy Crockett or Captain Hook.
So me-- Nah.
I don't have any questions.
Where is everybody? ( "Wedding March" playing ) Our prayers have been answered.
Since my father is no long with us, I've chosen Matt Donner to give the invocation.
It's been a long time since I stepped inside this church but Ruby asked me to come here tonight.
It is her hope that this wedding marks the end of the violence.
It is her hope, it is my mission.
It stops here, everybody.
After tonight, I don't make any distinction between those who live on and off the Hill.
Between those who believe, because of their birthright, they're above the law and those who we call criminals.
If the way is wrong, said Heraclitus, the way must change.
And it will.
It will change.
(Music plays) man: We are gathered here today to witness a sacred union.
A marriage, which is a celebration of love, joy and devotion between two souls.
Into this holiest state, these two persons present come now to be joined.
If any man can show just cause why they may not lawfully be joined together, let him now speak or else hereafter forever hold his peace.
Ruby Cates, will thee have this man to be thy wedded husband? To live together after God's ordinance in the holiest state of matrimony? Will thee obey him, and serve him, love honor and keep him in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others keep thee only onto him so long as you both shall live? Ruby: I do.
Man: Stay tuned for scenes from our next episode.
