Chapter 3: The Giantslayer

[uplifting opening theme music playing]
[wind howling]
[gentle music playing]
[magic chimes]
[sighing]
[menacing music playing]
[ghostly voices] Hilda.
No. Stay away from me.
[music intensifies]
- [loud bang]
- [screams]
[sighs, grunts]
Oh no.
[Astrid] You know, that charm
was to protect you here in Tofoten.
Now you're home,
you don't really need to replace it.
[Hilda] I know.
But somehow,
I'd just feel safer if I had it.
I've been having these dreams.
Dreams?
It's nothing.
Do you think you can make me a new one?
You know I'd love to.
Though, by the time
I'm able to source the correct wood,
it might be simpler for you
to get it yourself.
Myself? Where did it come from?
It's a cutting from the Faratok Tree
Mm-hmm.
an ancient ash
deep in the Forest of Nott.
[gentle mystical music playing]
Whoa.
There you are.
- Didn't know you were looking for me.
- Wood Man.
Oh, I I wasn't, really.
I've been looking for this.
[grunts]
[grunting]
Ancient trees, huh?
Doesn't say anything about me.
Should it?
Let's just say, I'm a kind
of caretaker of these woods.
Trees this old
need someone looking out for them.
They do? How come?
You wouldn't believe
the way people treat them.
Hacking and sawing off branches
just for keepsakes, magic wands, charms.
- [chuckles nervously]
- [chirping]
[growling]
And don't get me started on these guys.
They wreak havoc on the bark.
That's why I'm patching all these holes.
Mind holding this for a second?
Uh, sure.
[growling, barking]
[grunts]
Twig, get back here!
[barking]
Twig!
Eh
[sighs] I should probably follow her.
I wouldn't want anything
to happen to my hammer.
[grunts]
Twig.
[sighs]
What the?
[mysterious music playing]
Twig.
- Twig?
- [whimpers]
[growling]
Twig!
[barking]
[sighs] Twig, come back here.
[growling]
[gasps]
Have you got the fire going?
Wood stacks, coming right up.
What is this?
[goat bleating]
[folk medieval music playing]
[growls]
[whimpers]
[whimpers]
Careful, Twig.
Unless this is a very convincing
historical reenactment,
I think we might somehow be in the past.
- When's it gonna end?
- Mm.
That's half a groat. Thanks.
To be on the safe side, we should try
really hard not to change anything.
I've messed with the timeline before,
and that got really scary really fast.
[woman]will meet today?
Oi! Watch it!
Oh. Sorry. [sighs]
[gasps] Look at this house. I don't think
they've built them like this since
- [loud bang]
- [people screaming]
[gasps]
[menacing music playing]
[Hilda] Since the time of giants.
[man] Oh no.
If it isn't bad enough
that she destroyed our home,
it's too cold to sort through the rubble.
Are you two okay?
No, we're not.
That was all we had.
[sighs] If it weren't for the Giantslayer,
we wouldn't have any hope.
Who's the Giantslayer?
You haven't heard of the Giantslayer?
He's only the best thing
that's ever happened to us.
Getting the giants, one by one.
Just last week,
he caught that one's brother.
The dumb thing's probably
searching all over trying to find him.
Hm.
[panting, grunts]
Where'd she go? [screams]
[gasps]
- [panting]
- [barks]
[gasps]
[mystical music playing]
[gasps]
[heavy footsteps]
Whoa.
Well, you don't see that every day.
Wood Man. You followed us.
Well, I was worried.
- You have still got my hammer, right?
- [gasps]
You know it's rude to stare.
Sorry. It's just,
I've never seen so many giants.
Not from around here, are you?
Well, I kind of am, but not really.
It's a bit complicated. My name's Hilda.
I heard your brother's in trouble.
Having a hard time tracking him down?
[sighs] No, I know where he is.
See for yourself.
He isn't well hidden,
but I fear it's a trap.
They're using him
to try to capture more of us.
That's terrible.
All over the world,
things like this are happening.
There are whispers
we may not stay here much longer.
[Hilda grunts]
I'm sorry. I wish there was
something I could do to help.
There is nothing you could do.
You are just a little girl.
How did this happen?
How did we travel through time?
The roots of the Faratok Tree run deep.
I mean, really deep.
Traversing time and dimension.
We're certainly in the past,
but it's more accurate to say
we're in a sort of alternate universe.
Alternate universe?
[gasps] So if we change something here,
it won't affect our own timeline?
That's right. Consequence-free.
Excellent.
Wait. That doesn't mean
Curse this big mouth of mine.
[medieval music playing]
Hey, you.
[grunting]
You have to set this giant free.
Can't you see he's in distress?
[yawns]
Or at least very bored.
We're only cutting this one free
after the Giantslayer's put an end to him.
Well, I'd like to give
this Giantslayer a piece of my mind.
[stomping]
Does someone wish
to address the Giantslayer?
[swallows]
Halvor, you have a visitor.
[growls]
[snorts]
You're the Giantslayer?
I am.
[grunting]
Aye! Behold my captive.
Huh.
Come. Walk with me.
[snorts]
Okay.
This giant is merely the beginning.
I'm at work on something much greater,
an attack that will defeat
our enemies once and for all.
When the giants come
to rescue their friend, we strike.
Have you tried talking to the giants?
I wasn't put on this earth to talk.
My destiny is to slay.
And how many giants have you slain?
Officially, none yet.
But this one soon.
I just need him as bait.
Once the other giants
fall into my trap, then we slay. Ya!
[gasps]
[mystical music playing]
[heavy footsteps]
[music continues to play]
[sighs]
So, did you negotiate a peace treaty?
Convince the villagers
to lay down their arms?
Not exactly.
To think this might be their last night.
Before they leave this world forever.
That would certainly be something to see.
Well, we should probably
get back to the tree now and
No, we have a chance here
to actually change things for the better.
We can do something.
We have to do something.
[intriguing music playing]
- Mm.
- What are you so jittery about?
I'm just a little concerned about
how these villagers might react
to a small wooden man
with a floating head.
Oh.
[snoring]
- We need to cut through that rope.
- I don't have my scissors.
Or my hammer, for that matter.
[sighs]
[snoring]
That'll do it.
[grunting]
[snoring]
[grunts]
Huh?
Demon!
No. Wood Man.
[barking]
Whoa!
Oh no. We're giving him an itch.
There is a demon in our midst!
- [man] Monster! Tree devil!
- [woman] Demon!
Now, listen.
I'm not looking for any trouble.
I'm just here for [clicks fingers]
Are any of you fans of the jazz guitar?
[muffled] That would be a "no," then.
Hey, leave him alone! Huh?
[shouts]
Can you hold off scratching
for just a second? I'm trying to free
[screams, grunts]
[man] The giants are here!
- [man 1] Let's go!
- [man 2] Go! Run!
[man 4] Hurry. They're here! Hurry.
[grunts softly]
[whimpers]
Oh.
[whimpering]
- [distant stomping]
- [gasps] Oh no.
[panting]
I'm too late.
[menacing music playing]
- Charge!
- [soldiers cheer]
[upbeat adventurous music playing]
[clanking]
Fire the catapults!
[shouting]
Please stop!
[grunts]
It doesn't have to be like this.
I can talk to them for you.
You'll be crushed. Look.
They're just defending themselves.
Whose side are you on?
What?
[men shouting]
Argh!
Fall back! Fall back!
[shouting]
[man] Get out of the way!
Oh no.
Please! Give us a second chance!
[grunts]
Come on.
[whimpers]
[grunts, shouts]
[gasps, sighs]
[grunts] Excuse me.
You again.
I know your people are planning to leave,
but it doesn't need to be this way.
You can stay, make peace with the humans.
They tried to kill me.
The Giantslayer has taken my brother.
He is not interested in peace.
What if I stop the Giantslayer?
He hasn't harmed your brother yet.
I don't think he's as bad as he seems.
Trust me.
[sighs]
It's not only me
you would have to convince.
Then help me talk to the others.
Please. I have to try.
[man] We can't stay here.
- [Gertl] But they just don't understand.
- [Aldinn] Everyone, please.
We can argue all day,
but one thing is clear.
The world has gotten too small for us.
He is right. It simply isn't ours anymore.
[heavy footsteps approaching]
[Jadarrokk] Then it is settled. We leave.
It is the only way.
It isn't!
[Hilda] There's a better way
to sort all this out.
[Einarr] What's that sound?
They can't hear me.
Do you mind speaking for me?
All humans do not feel
the same way about us.
This little one says we should try
to make peace with the villagers.
She says it will take time,
but it's worth it.
[Aldinn] Hm.
The decision has been made.
In the end, what will be will be.
Not all of us are happy about it,
but it must be done.
Hmm.
We can change this. I can speak to
the Giantslayer. I can make him see.
Oh, little one, we're not leaving
because of one giant slayer.
You'd have to change hearts
all across the world.
[footsteps receding]
[indistinct chatter]
[pants] Wood Man?
What are you doing up there?
Just hanging around,
getting to know the locals.
Ah!
[snorting]
You let him go this instant!
You wish for me to free the demon?
Why must you insist on helping monsters?
He's not a monster.
[whimpering]
He's my friend.
More like an old acquaintance.
If he's your friend,
then you are my enemy.
- [gasps]
- [both grunting]
- [swords clanking]
- [both grunting]
[growls]
- [Hilda grunts]
- [growls]
[growling]
[both grunting]
[grunting]
[grunts]
Ah!
- [both grunt]
- Ah!
[whimpers, growls]
[growling]
[snorts]
[grunting]
You don't have to do this.
Silence, monster lover. [grunts]
[gasps]
- [grunts]
- [growls]
- [both grunting]
- [swords clank]
Ah!
This is not my day.
[grunts] Ah!
You've got the giants all wrong.
I have nothing wrong.
They destroyed my home.
Then we have
more in common than you think.
Riveting conversation,
but you might want to speed it up.
[woman screams] Watch out! It's on fire!
[adventurous music continues]
[both grunting]
A giant stepped on my house too.
It was hard at first,
but I made the best of it.
But what happens the next time
a giant attacks? And the next time?
They're not attacking. They can't help it.
[screams, grunts]
- [music stops]
- [sword swishes]
[sighs]
[panting]
They took everything from me.
Everything.
Oh.
It was an accident.
No one steps on a house by accident.
[sighs] We do it every day.
We don't even realize.
Maybe you do, but I would notice
if I did that kind of damage.
Really? Did you mean to do all of this?
[dramatic music plays]
[sighs]
[goat beats]
[girl sobbing]
[all gasp]
If you just give the giants a chance,
you could live together in peace.
You can even help each other.
Uh Hilda?
My toes are beginning to tingle.
- [dramatic music playing]
- [grunts]
I don't mean
to overburden you with concerns,
but our way home is on fire too.
Oh!
Hm.
I don't know what to do. We need water.
[barking]
[sighs] It's not enough. [grunting]
[gasps]
[sighs]
Huh?
[menacing music playing]
[Hilda] You!
Thank you. How did you escape?
Halvor, the Giant Freer.
Has a nice ring to it, don't you think?
Thanks.
I know this doesn't make up
for what I've done,
but do you think you could help me
put out some of these fires?
[roars]
[blowing]
[snorts]
I strongly suggest
that we get back to the tree.
[gasps]
No, it's still happening.
Hilda!
[panting]
[grunts] Come on.
[mystical music playing]
Please. You don't have to go.
[Hilda] Whoa! [grunts]
We can still change things.
It doesn't have to end like this.
[screams]
[grunts, pants]
[roars, blows]
- [Halvor] Concentrate on the houses.
- All right.
Get everyone to safety.
Hey! Wait!
[music fades]
[music resumes]
[grunts]
[Hilda] Please, you have to help me.
No one is listening.
[Einarr] Most giants already gone.
- Goodbye, little one.
- [Hilda screams]
Wait! I'm still on you!
[grunts]
[screams]
[screaming]
[sighs] That was close. [chuckles]
Uh We may have a bigger problem.
[screams]
[grunts]
[grunting, panting]
[grunts, gasps]
[growls]
[grunts]
[dramatic music playing]
Ah. There you are.
[both grunt]
[screams]
[both grunt]
[panting]
[panting]
- [music fades]
- [growls]
[scream]
[both grunt]
[Hilda] It's gone.
I thought what we did in the past
wouldn't affect the present.
This tree must have been
some kind of pan-dimensional constant.
One set of roots reaching down
through countless realities.
Or maybe I was just thinking of
a different ancient magical tree.
[Hilda] I failed.
I had my chance to change things,
but I was too small.
I wouldn't be so sure.
Those giants made up their mind
about leaving a long time ago.
But they won't forget you,
and neither will that Giantslayer.
What are you saying?
That maybe we did make a difference?
I'm saying change takes time,
and we're not always around
to see the outcomes of our good deeds.
I'm sorry about the tree, Wood Man.
[Wood Man] Well, my job
just got a lot easier.
But it's not the end.
Just time for a fresh start.
Maybe I'll plant it
a little closer to home this time,
where there are
fewer vandals to worry about.
Before you take that away with you,
could I maybe,
possibly break a little piece off?
[head creaking]
[gentle intriguing music playing]
[barks gently]
Hm.
[menacing music playing]
[music fades]
[upbeat ending theme music playing]
