THE FILMING OF THIS EPISODE
WAS ANNOUNCED IN ADVANCE.
THOSE WHO APPEAR IN THE FOOTAGE HAVE
GIVEN THEIR CONSENT TO BEING FILMED
[light jazzy music playing]
GERMAN BATHHOUSE
GERMAN MIXED-GENDER BATHHOUSE
GERMAN SPORTS CLUB
GERMAN NATURIST SPORTS CLUB
A SAUNA IN BERLIN
GERMANY
[Si-kyung] Are we really going to
a public bath in Germany?
-I hardly even go to them back home.
-[laughs]
But here I am going to one in Germany.
So the one we're going to is very famous.
The public baths here usually don't have
separate locker rooms for men and women.
[Dong-youp] I heard that even the showers
at the gyms are shared.
As for us
I suggested we should all be naked
like everyone else,
but the cameraman said
he could never do that.
And the cameras are heavy and cold.
-And to carry them while naked
-They could hurt their shoulders.
-Of course.
-They could get cold too.
We understand, camera guy.
You can keep your clothes on.
-[in English] Hello.
-[employee] Hello.
Uh Okay, this is our first time here, so
[employee] Uh, we're just an average spa.
Like we find everywhere in Germany.
And we have mixed genders here.
Everywhere in this house.
MIXED-GENDER BATHS
MIXED-GENDER SAUNAS
MIXED-GENDER LOCKER ROOMS
-So it's all together?
-[employee] Yes.
So it's not something weird?
[employee] No. Not in Germany.
Ah, okay.
[employee] The number on these bracelets
is your locker number.
Why is mine 69?
I'm not sure.
Because, maybe it's your locker number.
[both laugh]
Okay.
-[laughs]
-[employee] Maybe it's your lucky number.
[Si-kyung] It is, it is.
[in Korean] Mine is 66.
-Mine is 69.
-Yours is 69.
You jealous? Wanna trade?
[employee in English]
There are your towels,
and enjoy your stay.
-[both] Thank you.
-[employee] You're welcome.
[in Korean] So all the spas
in Germany are like this.
Ooh.
They don't have separate entrances
for men and women like we do.
Look at this sign.
[Si-kyung in English] "Men and women."
[in Korean] Should we get changed?
[gasps] My goodness.
Oh, my.
[soft jazz music playing]
[Si-kyung gasps] My goodness. Oh, my.
Goodness.
Goodness.
Where's 69?
He gave us lockers
right next to other people.
[Si-kyung] Couldn't he have put us
farther away?
So awkward.
[Si-kyung] This was unexpected.
Uh
[comical music playing]
You know what I'm thinking?
We should try to be natural.
-Of course.
-We're obviously embarrassed,
but if we try too hard to act natural,
we'll look even more awkward.
[Dong-youp] I mean
Come on, Director.
I want to be naked.
Why can't we just
Oh, because of the mics?
Fine, whatever.
-Being a celebrity is rough, huh?
-[both laugh]
You know how we wear mics all the time?
But if we wore nothing but our mics,
it'd be like wearing a tie while naked.
-Or just socks.
-[Dong-youp] Right.
-Or even just a belt.
-[laughs]
I've never been so thankful
for these mics.
Saved by the mic.
This could have been the end of my career.
Everyone seems so comfortable.
[upbeat funky music playing]
Gosh, look over there.
[Dong-youp] They must get
a lot of couples.
[Si-kyung] I think it's nice.
[Dong-youp] Most of them seem
like couples.
[Si-kyung] I love the open-air baths.
[Dong-youp] Hello.
-[Si-kyung] Hello.
-[in English] Hello.
[Dong-youp in Korean] We're from Korea.
-[in English] We're from Korea.
-You're from Korea?
We're from Berlin.
My name is Jannes.
[Si-kyung] Jannes.
-Lilli is my name.
-[Si-kyung] Lilli.
[in Korean] I see.
[Si-kyung] We're very fascinated because
we don't have mixed-gender baths in Korea.
-Is this common in Germany?
-[in German] Yes, it is.
It's common for men and women
to visit the sauna together.
[in Korean] Oh.
[in German] Why do people
in Korea find it strange
for men and women to bathe together?
Are the baths separated? What is it like?
[in Korean] Ours are separated.
They have separate entrances.
[Si-kyung] Men go to one side,
and women go to the other.
[in German] But why?
[in Korean] Why, you ask?
[Dong-youp] That's a good question.
She's right. Why do we do that?
[all laugh]
[in German] Do you hope
it will change in the future?
[in Korean] Yes.
[laughs]
[Si-kyung] But the thing is,
we're used to it being that way.
How do you know each other?
Are you dating?
[in German] Jannes and I are just friends.
Our relationship is platonic.
[in Korean] Really? You're not dating?
[in German] No. It's not like that at all.
I actually have a boyfriend,
but I left him at home.
[Jannes] I also have a girl I like,
but she didn't come.
[exclaims, laughs]
[Dong-youp in Korean]
I'm surprised they're not dating.
JUST FRIENDS
So they're just bath buddies.
JUST BATH BUDDIES
So if you told your girlfriend
you were going to the sauna with Lilli
[Dong-youp] How would she react?
[in German] She wouldn't care.
I'd also be okay with her
going to a sauna with her male friends.
My boyfriend just told me
to have a good time.
-[in Korean] How are they so confident?
-[laughs]
[in German] Do you think you'd be too
embarrassed to go to a sauna with a woman?
[in Korean] I'd be embarrassed
and flustered.
[indistinct chatter]
Hello.
Hello.
[Si-kyung] Do a lot of couples
come here on dates?
Is it a common date spot?
Is it similar to going to the movies?
[in German] Yes, pretty much.
Personally, I think saunas
make a great first date.
It's one way you can tell
that they're open-minded.
Plus, you can check out
the other person a little.
-[in Korean] You sure can.
-For sure.
But what if you visit a sauna
with someone you love
and your little guy downstairs
He might react
to seeing that person naked.
[in German] I don't get it.
Could you elaborate?
[in Korean] We're in Germany.
Just ask him if he ever gets an erection.
When you're in a sauna with your lover,
you may end up getting an erection.
[in German] It would be embarrassing
to get an erection in public,
but I'm only human and I have desires.
It's a natural physical reaction.
But you should never
approach someone in that state.
Or show it off.
Another important thing is
that you should never
sexually objectify anyone in that state.
[Jannes] Just because someone is naked
doesn't mean you can
sexually objectify them.
Being nude is a natural thing.
You have to understand that first.
Nudity isn't always sexual.
[in Korean] Where we come from,
we think nudity is sexual and sexy.
But you're telling us
that isn't always the case.
[Dong-youp] It's just human bodies.
We're wearing robes because of our mics.
Are you offended at all
that we're wearing robes?
[in German] I was wondering
when you were going to take them off.
[laughs]
[in Korean] We had no choice but to wear
these because of our microphones.
[in German] I would've said the same
in your shoes.
[in Korean] But what if you went
to a sauna
and saw your friend's girlfriend,
a friend of your parents,
or your teacher from school?
Wouldn't that be a little awkward?
[in German] I've run into my friend's mom
at a sauna before.
-[gasps]
-I just gave her a light hug and said hi.
[Jannes] It didn't feel uncomfortable.
It's only awkward if you make it awkward.
If you treat it like it's not a big deal,
you'd be able to interact
as you would in any other situation.
[Dong-youp in Korean]
You ran into your friend's mom?
We're not used to it,
but it's very natural to the people here.
Goodness me.
[in German] What's important is
our own freedom to be nude,
not seeing other people's naked bodies.
[Jannes] It feels liberating to be nude.
It helps you focus on yourself
and the way you feel when you're nude.
There's no pressure
on your body whatsoever,
so you feel that much lighter.
What's important is how you feel.
[Dong-youp in Korean]
We can't even imagine
men and women being in the sauna together.
-That's right.
-It's difficult to imagine.
[Dong-youp] But I think
I'm starting to understand
what it means to look at someone
purely as another human being.
This is a culture they grew up with,
so it's completely natural to them.
-But not for us.
-Right.
Let's say I went to
a sauna with your wife.
I'm just saying.
It's just an example.
Imagine my mom ran into you at the sauna
and told me how nice it was
to see you again.
-[Si-kyung] I mean
-[laughs]
-It's a bit weird.
-It is.
-But I guess that's a cultural difference.
-Right.
[Si-kyung] It really hits home
when we use examples.
[Dong-youp] Definitely.
BERLIN
[Dong-youp] Someone offered to give us
a proper look
at the life of naturists in Germany.
[Si-kyung] "A proper look"?
BERLIN
NATURIST SPORTS CLUB
[Si-kyung] So this place is
[exclaims in surprise]
This is a
naturist sports club.
Right, a naturist sports club.
It feels totally different
from the space outside the gate.
-I feel like we're in the Garden of Eden.
-Exactly.
[exclaims in surprise]
-I saw a lot of elderly folks entering.
-Yeah.
-They were coming and going.
-To play sports.
My gosh!
My gosh!
[laughs]
[laughs]
[Si-kyung] They're gone now.
Here they come again.
Gosh.
[both sigh]
Should we try running too?
I suddenly miss my late mother.
Imagine how much I miss mine.
She's still alive.
-[Dong-youp] Gosh.
-My goodness.
JASMIN
NATURIS
It's cold out. We should rush over.
-[in English] Hello.
-[Si-kyung] Hello.
[in Korean] It's so cold. Are you okay?
[in German] It had been quite warm,
but it sure is cold today.
I do this so that my body can remember
how important it is
to be exposed to the cold.
It helps with blood circulation
and strengthens your immune system.
There was this trend that started
during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many naturist groups in Berlin
started taking ice baths in lakes
while doing breathing exercises.
[Jasmin] It's good for your health.
[in Korean] Can you tell us
a bit about this place?
[in German] We're currently in
a FKK sports club in Berlin.
GERMAN FOR "FREE BODY CULTURE"
A MOVEMENT THAT PROMOTES NATURISM
[Jasmin] There are other FKK sports clubs
in other cities around Germany.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY
136 FKK SPORTS CLUBS IN ALL OF GERMANY
The FKK movement
first started in the 20th century.
[Jasmin] It was around the time
of the Industrial Revolution.
The cities became noisier and dirtier
as they became more densely populated.
Seeing this made people long for nature.
They went off into the wilderness,
like lakes and forests.
[Dong-youp] Oh.
[Jasmin] Soon, some beaches and lakes
became exclusively FKK,
and FKK sports clubs came into existence.
[Dong-youp in Korean]
So it's got quite a history.
[Jasmin in German] Yes.
I made a booking at a FKK sports club
with some other naturists today.
VFK CLUB BERLIN (1922): BERLIN'S
2ND-OLDEST NATURIST SPORTS CLUB
[in Korean] This club has been around
for over 100 years.
What?
-[laughs]
-Wow.
[Jasmin in German]
Yes, that's what it looks like.
-[Dong-youp in Korean] Uh
-[Si-kyung] Is this for real?
I've never seen anything like this.
But I mean
[Si-kyung] They do look very happy,
don't you think?
[upbeat funky music playing]
[water splashing]
[Si-kyung] Wow, I mean
[in German] There's a trampoline
over there. Should we go over there?
[Dong-youp in Korean] Sure.
[Si-kyung] Goodness.
Hello
-Could we have a
-Gosh.
Whoo!
-[Jasmin laughs]
-[claps]
[Dawid whoops]
Do you have a minute to chat?
[in German] Of course.
[in Korean]
Could you introduce yourselves?
[in German] I'm Dawid.
I'm from Poland.
I've lived in Berlin for 15 years now.
I'm a nude photographer.
-[in Korean] He's a photographer.
-I see.
[Si-kyung] How long have you been
a naturist?
[in German] I've been living as a naturist
for the past 13 years.
I went to a park
in my second year in Berlin.
[Dawid] I thought it was just
a regular park,
but I ran into a bunch of naked people.
It was a strange feeling.
It made me question
how open-minded I really was.
[both exclaim in understanding]
So I went back to that park later
and took off my clothes, which felt great.
I felt free and comfortable.
[in Korean] What's Poland like
compared to Germany?
Are Polish people open-minded too?
[in German] We have FKK there too,
but it's a very small community.
It's not as liberal as it is here.
[Dawid] In Poland,
people think nudity in public is sexual.
I'd say it's frowned upon.
[in Korean] Would you say this culture
is more common in Berlin?
[in German] Yes. It's much more liberal.
There are even parks, forests,
and lakes where we can be nude.
[Dawid] Not to mention sports clubs
like this one.
FREILICHTPARK (FREE LIGHT PARK)
THE WORLD'S FIRST NATURIST PARK
THAT OPENED IN 1903
A FIELD OF GRASS IN HALENSEE, BERLIN
TIERGARTEN, BERLIN
[in Korean] What are some of
the benefits of FKK?
[in German] The best thing about it is
the freedom.
You can be free from the rules
of social convention.
[in Korean] Is it like
a sense of liberation?
Everyone here does seem
to be very comfortable.
[Dawid in German] Of course.
You should try
taking your clothes off too.
[in Korean] No, thanks.
I have a career to hold onto.
-[laughs]
-[in German] Fair enough.
-[in Korean] I'm sorry.
-[both laugh]
What kind of activities
can you participate in here?
[in German] Well, there's swimming.
NAKED SWIMMING
[Dawid] Jogging.
NAKED JOGGING
[Dawid] Badminton.
NAKED BADMINTON
[Dawid] Table tennis.
NAKED TABLE TENNIS
There will be a yoga class soon.
NAKED YOGA
[Jasmin] Would you like to join us later?
-[Dong-youp in Korean] Yes, we'll stop by.
-[Si-kyung] Sure, we'll be there.
INDOOR SPORTS CENTER
[in German] This is a naturist's paradise.
[chuckles]
[upbeat synth music playing]
[Dawid] We have aerobics,
table tennis
A lot of different activities
are available here.
[laughs]
FIRST INDOOR ACTIVITY
NAKED YOGA
-[Dong-youp in English] Hi.
-[Si-kyung] Hello.
[exhales]
[comical music playing]
[Danielle] You can have
your hands on the knees,
and we'll go ahead and just start
by making some circles.
Really find yourself with deep breath.
So inhaling fully.
[Danielle] Exhaling fully.
And exhale.
It might be uncomfortable at first.
Your body will start to warm up,
start to open.
Making sure you breathe fully.
Do one more posture together.
Today, we'll also
do some partner exercises.
Come side-by-side with your partner.
We're gonna move into tree pose.
If you want to wrap your arm
around their waist,
coming close by, you can do that.
If it feels too close, you can also just
be hand-to-hand with the person.
-[in Korean] This far?
-[in English] That's perfectly okay.
We'll take the other leg,
bringing it up for your tree.
[Danielle] Take a moment to ground.
And then inhale as you extend that arm up
towards the sky.
Take a deep breath and full breath out.
It will help to focus on just one point.
Focus on one point, take one more breath.
You can come back to the center.
You can go ahead and ground
that outer foot down.
You can release the hands.
You can take a moment
to thank your partner
-for sharing that exercise.
-[in Korean] Good work.
[in English] With that, we say, "Namaste."
Namaste.
[Si-kyung] Can you say hi, please?
My name is Danielle.
And I'm from California.
There's a lot of focus and emphasis
on what you look like, and, uh
[Si-kyung] Yeah.
[Danielle] Then when I moved to Berlin,
I found that
FKK culture was so strong here.
And I really was drawn
and attracted to that.
Um, it's really given me the space
to feel more comfortable in my body
and also feel more comfortable
and compassionate
with other people
and other people's bodies as well.
Yeah, since then, I've been hosting
events like this,
naked yoga, teaching naked yoga.
Is it popular?
I think, over the years,
it's getting more and more popular.
When I was doing it
about ten years ago, not so much.
[Danielle] What's really been
important to me
in doing all of the naked events
which I'm doing is
that it's separated from sexuality.
Because I see widely spread beliefs
that nudism is connected to sex.
-Yeah.
-[Danielle] And I basically usually say
the guideline, "Don't do anything
at the party that you wouldn't want
your grandmother to see you doing."
-Okay.
-[Danielle] Yeah.
If somebody has a kinky grandmother?
Well, kinky grandma,
we still have our guidelines, yeah.
I'd say no explicit
Some people do have kinky grandmas,
especially in Berlin.
Uh, okay.
SECOND INDOOR ACTIVITY
NAKED TABLE TENNIS
-Hello.
-Hello.
[Si-kyung] It's nice to meet you.
[in German] My name is
Antje Nikola Mönning.
I'm an actress, musician,
and writer for WTP International.
I am known for appearing naked
on stage, in movies, and in music videos.
My name is Ulrich Thomas Wolfstädter.
I'm a philosopher.
I'm always naked
as long as the circumstances allow it.
Oh.
This is the second-oldest
FKK Club in Berlin.
Germany has 136 of these clubs
where 30,000 members
can engage in activities
or just relax while naked.
Around ten million people
have experienced the FKK culture.
That's about one-eighth
of Germany's population.
Oh.
So quite a lot of people
have experienced this.
[in German] Of course.
Being naked is wonderful,
and it feels great.
It's absolutely amazing.
Would you like to play?
-[in Korean] You mean a doubles match?
-[in German] Yes.
-[in Korean] Sure.
-Are you any good?
I'm all right.
[in German] Good.
Let's see how good you are.
[in Korean] I've never played table tennis
against a couple of naked people.
[in German] Bet you've never played
against naked people.
[upbeat funky music playing]
-Oh!
-[chuckles]
[in Korean] Crap, my bad.
[laughs]
Right. You could have gotten that one.
-The clothes get in the way.
-[Dong-youp laughs]
That's why you need to play it nude.
This is making me want to
take off my clothes.
[in German] I told you.
Everything's better when naked.
[in Korean] We can't win
with our clothes on.
-Should we try again with our clothes off?
-[both laugh]
[in German] Go ahead. Take them off.
[in Korean] We have no choice
because we have to wear the mics here.
It's a lame excuse.
[laughs]
What are the benefits
of not wearing your clothes?
[in German] Personally,
I think it feels very liberating.
You simply have to try it yourself.
Everything feels different
when the air touches your skin.
It feels especially good
when it touches my penis and my butt.
It makes me so happy.
It really gets me going.
Just do what I do.
I do everything naked at home.
[Ulrich] It's so comfortable.
[in Korean] What does your family think?
It wouldn't be easy to do
unless your family accepts it.
[in German] My wife strongly opposed it
when I first became a naturist.
But after many conversations,
she came to understand why I do what I do.
And after further discussion,
I can now be naked at home
even when my wife brings her friends home
or even her parents.
[Ulrich] It's very wonderful
and liberating.
[in Korean] What do
your in-laws think about it?
[in German] They were uncomfortable
and didn't know where to look at first.
But they eventually came around.
They came to accept it
and told me to do as I wanted.
There hasn't been an issue since then.
I cook, garden, read,
and drink coffee while naked.
It's just wonderful,
and it's become a way of life for me.
[in Korean] But hot oil can splatter
on you while cooking.
[Si-kyung] What do you do then?
[both laugh]
[in German] Even if I get oil on my skin,
it's only a little bit.
It's not a problem.
I just stand like this.
Check it out.
I'm going to flip it.
[exclaims]
Ta-da. No problem.
I didn't get any oil on me.
All is good.
[in Korean] I think it's in their culture
to respect other people's life choices
as long as they do no harm to anyone else.
[in German] Honestly,
that is our goal and our dream.
There was a discourse
that came up recently
about women
not being able to swim topless.
Many women and their supporters
came together and protested.
[Antje] They got on their bikes topless,
shouting,
[in English] "No nipple is free
until all nipples are free."
[in German] As a result,
as of 2023, several cities in Germany,
including Berlin,
now allow people
of all genders to be topless.
Even at public swimming pools.
BERLIN'S SWIMMING POOLS
HAVE LIBERATED WOMEN'S BREASTS:
WOMEN CAN NOW SWIM TOPLESS
BERLIN'S PUBLIC POOLS
ANNOUNCE NEW REGULATIONS:
WOMEN ALLOWED TO SWIM TOPLESS
[in Korean] I don't know
if some people do it privately,
but in Korea, we've never seen
such a thing happen in public.
This is all new to us,
so I think the viewers will be fascinated.
[in German] Being nude feels
very natural to me.
We were all born nude,
so there's no reason to be ashamed.
[Antje] I believe that our bare bodies
are also a part of our wardrobe.
Everything we can do while clothed
can also be done naked.
[tense music playing]
-[in Korean] What?
-[woman in German] Follow me.
[Si-kyung in Korean]
This is driving me nuts.
[woman in German]
I am your queen for the day.
Are you ready, my slaves?
[Dong-youp in Korean] Yes, my queen.
-[smacks]
-[Dong-youp yelps]
-[in English] Louder!
-[Si-kyung in Korean] Yes, my queen!
[woman in English]
Perhaps you could be a good slave.
[loud slapping]
[Dong-youp in Korean]
Stop it! I'm serious!
