The Glades s02e12 Episode Script

Shine

And the endless summer is here to stay I'm never leaving this tropical bay where every sunrise Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! Whoo-hoo! Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! Whoo! Whoo-whoo! The next crazy, old man who grabs me is getting my foot up his ass.
Tell me about it.
One of them also asked me if I knew "The Sun Also Rises.
" What the hell kind of question is that? What are they even celebrating? Some dude named Hemingway.
It's his birthday.
I heard one of them say he's like 112.
Is that even possible? Apparently.
Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! Thanks.
Whoo-hoo! Live my life in this tropical bay where every sunrise Brandy? Brandy! What's wrong? Victim's name is Gordon Adams.
- White hair? - Dyed white hair.
Kind of looks like, um, uh -- oh, you know, uh -- - Ernest Hemingway? - Wow.
I was gonna say Colonel Sanders.
But, okay, Hemingway.
But unlike Hemingway, this wasn't a suicide.
The entrance wound from the bullet is on the back of his head, and there's no stippling, so it wasn't at close range.
Both legs were broken, but after he was killed.
Actually, there's not much to see.
There's no bruising or hemorrhaging, which is how I knew the fractures were postmortem.
Normally, you'd only make this kind of discovery in autopsy, but I was able to palpate the legs.
Of course, you can read all of this in my report, so why bother listening when you have more interesting bodies to look at? Uh, what? - Hey, Carlos.
- Hey.
What? What -- what? No, uh -- no, nothing.
Just you look really nice today.
I mean, not that you don't look nice every dayjust today.
I never wonder why he's single.
Uh, thank you.
So, who am I testing for gunshot residue? Good question.
Um -- No, I mean how many kits am I gonna need? Another good question.
Yeah.
Actually, there was, uh, one Captain, two waitresses, and 30 patrons.
You couldn't narrow it down any? He hasn't canvassed the witnesses yet.
Yet, yet.
I'm gonna talk to these two -- what are those two? Pirates.
Their names are Brandy and Sherry.
- Brandy? - They looked official, so I asked.
Did the victim get in a fight or an argument with anyone? It's a booze cruise.
They were all fighting and arguing and arm-wrestling.
Well, anyone specific that the victim got into a fight or an argument or arm-wrestle with? - You mean like a name? - Or a description.
- White hair, white beard.
- You mean like the victim? Exactly like the victim.
They all look like the victim.
In case you were wondering For whom the bell tolls.
It tolls for me.
Yeah.
That's far enough, sir.
Hey, Detective, this gonna take much longer? It'll take as long as it takes, Captain Frank.
'Cause I'm right in the middle of Hemingway Fest, and I got charters all week.
Yeah.
What is it with you guys and Hemingway? Ernest Hemingway was the greatest man's man to ever live.
Oh.
He wrote like a man, drank like a man, chased tail like a man.
So every year for the last, I don't know, 33 years, Hemingway Fest celebrates his life.
Oh, yeah? How? By, uh, hosting a booze cruise? No, booze cruise was all my idea.
But Hemingway Fest does host a short-story competition, where the contestants are judged by their clothing, how well they speak.
- Wow.
Sounds manly.
What about the bathing-suit competition? I'll tell you what, there'll be some drinking and some arm-wrestling and a look-alike contest, of course.
Of course.
Hence the victim, Gordon Adams.
Did you know him? No.
Wasn't signed up for the booze cruise.
He wasn't even on the boat.
No.
He was underneath it, being dragged by you.
Thought she was running a little slow.
Little slow.
Yeah, a little extra weight, like a dead body.
And what are these? Gas tanks? Ford's fill 'er up.
That you? Yeah.
I own a gas station.
Also own a deep-sea fishing boat and some land.
I'm just a small businessman trying to make a living, Detective.
But this here -- she's my big moneymaker.
Well, you can go a long way with these gas tanks on this here.
I told you, I got charters booked all week.
I don't really care where you're going, Frank, just where you been.
If you're asking for a course map, I don't have one.
Well, then, I'm asking you to draw a map.
The sooner you do that, the sooner you get your boat back.
- Want to do me again? - Thanks, no.
Once was enough.
Wow.
Does that ever really work for you? You know what? This guy will provide paper and coloring-in pencils.
Go for your life.
Sorry you had to deal with that.
Uh, how'd it go? Well, all the papa Hemingways agreed to let me test them, but there wasn't any GSR on their hands from shooting a gun, neither on the pirate wenches or Captain Crunch.
Oh, and here I was afraid that it'd be a complete waste of your time.
No.
I did get a couple marriage proposals out of it.
That, I'm not surprised.
I kind of have to go.
I have a shift at the hospital.
Hey, you want to grab a drink later? - Maybe.
- Uh, what's that? It's just something I was leaning on to write.
That's Gordon Adams.
Are you sure it's not just another Hemingway? No, not according to the caption.
"Gordon Adams, arm-wrestling champion, celebrates his victory while his new bride, Shelby, looks on.
" - If looks could kill - And maybe they did.
You got time for one more GSR test? I promise, it'll be easier.
Huh.
Never noticed that before.
- Third-row seating? - Uh, yeah.
Uh, comes in handy when I have to pick up Jeff from soccer practice and, surprise, he's invited half the team back to the house.
Oh, there's our girl.
Here you go.
That'll be $20.
Hi, hi.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Nice doggy.
Good dog.
Just, uh, you want to put your dog on a leash there? Come on, Beau.
Sit.
Can I help y'all with something? Yeah.
You, uh -- you Shelby Adams, married to Gordon Adams? I've seen a lot of jealous husbands with guns before.
But never with a badge.
That's a first.
- No, no, we're not -- - He's not my husband.
No, we're not, no.
Yeah, well, you look like Gordon's type -- female and breathing.
- Unlike your husband.
- That is -- What? I'm Uh, Mrs.
Adams, we're very sorry, but your husband was found murdered this morning.
Thank you for letting me know.
Thank you for verifying a motive.
I didn't kill Gordon.
I didn't like him running around on me, but if I wanted to get rid of him, I would just file for divorce.
- Where were you last night? - Here.
We live behind the bait shop.
- So you were alone? - No.
I was with Beau.
Okay.
Where can I find this Beau? Beau's the dog.
Oh, Beau your angry dog.
All right, well, you know, your husband was shot in the head and then dumped in, uh, water somewhere around here.
Boat picked up his body.
Just went straight past here.
You -- anything to say about that? Say you want an answer, you better ask me a question.
Yeah, Carlos, just hang on a sec.
- Can I see your hands? -You see them.
They're right here.
No.
She wants to test for gunshot residue.
That's so we can test if you've shot a gun -- - Yeah, I know what it is.
- Really? Yeah.
I also know she needs a warrant for that.
I know my rights.
- [ Snaps fingers Come on, Beau.
- Bye, Beau.
She definitely could have killed him.
Or, if she didn't, you'd think she'd want to help us find out whoever did.
I know this is hard for you to believe, but not everyone likes cops.
Well, especially when they have something to hide.
Yeah, Carlos? All right.
I'll be right there -- oh, that is if Callie can drop me off on the way to the hospital.
- Get in.
- Thank you.
Determining time of death is always tricky.
But when the body's in water, it's almost impossible.
So we have no idea when Gordon was killed.
Around 10:00 p.
m.
last night.
His pocket watch stopped when he hit the water.
What kind of 26-year-old wears a pocket watch? The kind of 26-year-old who would dye his hair to look like Ernest Hemingway.
Oh, right.
- I wouldn't do that if I was you.
- What? To figure out the caliber of the bullet, I had to collect all the fractured bones and reconstruct his skull.
Ah.
And? - And the bullet is a .
380.
- Or a nine-millimeter.
It's, uh, close in size.
Anything you can tell me for sure? Gordon may not have looked exactly like Hemingway, but he sure had his liver.
The guy was a big drinker.
He had cirrhosis, early stages, and hepatorenal syndrome, which is a dysfunction of the kidney.
At 26? Yeah, he must have consumed including the day he died.
His blood-alcohol level at the time of death was off the charts.
- Off the charts like what, .
28? - Try .
48.
Phew! And that's a lot of mojitos.
It wasn't your run-of-the-mill rum coursing through his veins.
The percentage of alcohol was much higher, like 120-proof.
- What, like grain alcohol? - Hmm.
More like ethanol, as in [sniffs.]
gas.
Phew.
Like Frank's Fill 'er Up? - Daniel? - Yeah.
I need you to find out the address for Frank Ford's gas station and anything on his business, his dive boat, and his property.
Want me to e-mail it to your phone? No.
Put it in a file.
Meet me in my car.
Got it.
Your car.
Wait, your car? Just don't forget to fasten your seatbelt.
I'm sorry, that man is too damn handsome for his own good.
Does Callie know? Does Callie know what? What are you two whispering about over there? - Dr.
Avery's back.
- Ben's back? Just started today.
Good.
We need a strong man around here.
Well, she'd know about that.
Sorry.
I've never been in a stakeout before.
It's not a stakeout, if anyone asks.
Technically you're undercover.
Undercover? Really? Okay.
Wait.
Shouldn't I have a gun? What, so you can shoot yourself in the foot? Or, worse, shoot me in the foot? Look.
Here.
- $20? - Yeah.
See that guy over there? Yeah.
Well, unfortunately, he's seen me, too, so I need you to go up to him and ask for A can of premium to go.
Just like that.
Just keep it simple.
- A can of premium to go.
- Yeah.
Okay.
Let's do this.
Oh, wait.
Don't I need, uh, a gas can? Well, if this court transcript is correct, he'll give you one.
Thank you, sir.
Excuse me, sir? Wonder if, uh, you could help me with something.
You lost? No.
Um, a can of premium to go? You want a can of premium, huh? Yeah.
That's right.
- Wait right there.
- Thanks.
Oh.
Great.
Use it in good health.
Detective.
You done with my boat? Not as long as you keep lying to me.
Two weeks ago, Gordon was arrested for assaulting someone.
That someone happened to be you.
Uh, what was the trouble between you two? - Wasn't no trouble.
- No trouble? Oh, like when you got caught bootlegging moonshine five years ago in South Carolina? See, uh, before Gordon was shot, he was drinking a pretty powerful alcohol, more than 120-proof.
Alcohol that pure can be only one of two things, either ethanol gas or moonshine.
Daniel, why don't you pour me a cup? Oh, um, I don't know that's the best idea.
I wouldn't drink that if I were you.
Well, chemically speaking, ethanol and moonshine are the same, right? That's true, but by law, you're supposed to denature ethanol or lace it with poison to keep people from drinking it.
Well, that didn't stop Frank from serving it to Gordon, now did it? Daniel, hit me.
So, uh, you got him drunk, then put a bullet in his head? That's not true.
Which part, putting a bullet in his head or getting him drunk? - Both.
- Well, we'll see about that.
Detective Okay.
What do you want me to do? You want me to call an ambulance, call 911? I can do that.
JustDaniel! - I'm CPR-certified, okay? - I'm fine.
Bet that put some hair on your chest.
Well, not as bad as what I'm about to put on you.
Frank Ford, you're under arrest.
For what? Selling moonshine? Better.
Suspicion of murder.
Hands, please.
I mean first, you make out like you don't even know the guy.
Now you're saying that you and Gordon Adams were friends, even after he assaulted you.
So we had a fight? I didn't even press charges.
In fact, I went out of my way to keep his ass out of jail.
Maybe you wanted to keep his ass out of jail so you could kill him.
Why would I do that? Well, I don't know.
Maybe it had something to do with why Gordon assaulted you in the first place.
- I don't even remember.
- Yeah.
I believe that like I believe your alibi about being alone on the boat.
And, frankly, Frank, you look to me like the guy that was voted most likely to murder someone.
I don't have to sit here and be insulted by you.
Actually, Frank, you kind of do.
Sit down.
Last I checked, making moonshine was illegal.
You don't have to tell me.
My family's been making 'shine since before the whiskey rebellion.
And that right there, that ain't even 'shine.
Oh, really? 'Cause our hydrometer says it's 120-proof.
Phew! Yeah.
It's called Rottweiler.
I get it from a fully licensed distillery, a guy named Andrew Bailey.
All right, if it's legal, why are you trying to make out that it isn't? Everybody knows moonshine tastes better when it's illegal, and it definitely sells better.
Makes people feel good when they think they're breaking the law.
Oh, well, then, murdering Gordon Adams must have made you feel pretty damn good.
I didn't kill Gordon Adams! Go talk to Andrew.
He'll tell you.
Oh, you know I will.
Moonshine? No, man, I don't sell that stuff in my bar.
'Cause Frank Ford said you had some.
- You know Frank Ford, do you now? - I do.
You ever tasted real 'shine before? Yeah.
Damn near blew my doors off.
All my hooch is strictly Catdaddy.
My great grandpappy taught it to his son.
He taught my daddy.
My old man passed it down to me.
- You got Rottweiler? - Fighting kind.
Excellent choice.
Now, this right here is the shit.
Grandpappy Drew used to say it tastes like the devil's tears, 'cause that's what comes out when Satan cries.
Really? So, did, uh, grandpappy Drew say that when he was toasting you graduating from Tulane? Summa cum laude with a degree in marketing and a rap sheet for possession of an illegal substance.
Got knocked down to 36 months' probation, huh? How'd you know that? Because I know where you live, who you call, what you sell, yadda, yadda, yadda.
So this whole hipster, Catdaddy routine is just really just a front to sell hooch, right? Got me, bro.
But I'm also guessing that you know that this stuff is not really illegal.
I'm a licensed distiller of Rottweiler unaged whiskey.
Now, if I wasn't licensed, the very same recipe for the very same hooch would be illegal.
And better marketing.
Yeah.
I know how that works.
What I don't know is what was going on between your friend Frank Ford and my murder victim, Gordon Adams.
Yo, I'll -- I'll tell you everything.
Just do me a solid.
Grab me by the arm and yank me over to the side.
What? You know how much more business I'll get if people think this stuff is illegal.
My pleasure.
All right! All right, look, all booze-cruise captains are talking about what happened, okay? It's crazy.
He was a good guy.
When he first came to Florida, you know, he used to hang out here a lot.
Then he, you know, hooked up with that banshee.
Shelby.
Her fish-and-tackle shop's not far from here.
Yeah, I-I swear I'll never understand why Gordon went and married her.
She's always complaining about something.
Something or someone? Yo, it's no secret she doesn't like me or my bar, especially since she runs that skanky nip house.
- Nip house? - Yeah.
Yo, she sells moonshine out of an illegal backroom bar inside the store.
And that rotgut she peddles will make you go blind for reals, man.
You never reported it.
Out of respect for Gordon.
But his crazy, bitch wife -- that's who you should bust.
Yeah, you'd like that, wouldn't you? Make things a lot easier for you.
Tell you what, you got any more tips on how I should do my job, make things easier for you.
Call me.
Hey, can you -- - Callie.
- Ben.
- Uh, how are you? - I'm good.
How are you? - I'm great, I'm great.
Thank you.
- Good.
- What are we doing? - I don't know.
- Hi.
- Hi.
You know, I've been having these, uh -- these little mini reunions all day.
But I have to tell you, this was the one that I was waiting for.
- Oh, please.
- Oh, yeah, you -- You look fantastic, by the way.
No, I don't, but thank you.
I've been on my feet all day.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
I've got to rush off for a meeting with the board.
But I would really love to get together with you sometime.
Yeah.
That sounds great.
Oh.
I heard you got divorced.
Get off my property, Detective.
- Your making moonshine, Shelby? - That what Andrew Bailey told you? He's been gunning for me for years.
Uh, that's funny.
He says it's the other way around.
He's just a wannabe.
He wants to move down here and live the life.
Messed everything up.
Wants to tell the locals what they should do, how they should live.
Kind of like you, Detective.
You're not from around here.
Chicago.
Yeah.
I can always tell.
Gordon wasn't from around here either.
You took to him.
It was easy to take to Gordon.
It was pinning him down that was so damn hard.
You're drunk, aren't you? Stinking.
That's for you, Gordon.
You rest in peace, you son of a bitch.
I swear I didn't mean for it to happen like this.
You blame yourself? Of course I do.
I need to stop talking.
Well, I'm a good listener.
Why are you so upset, Shelby? I'm not upset.
I'm angry.
Upset.
I'm drunk.
Hey, don't let me stop you.
Hell, I'll join you for one.
Why don't we go back inside? The hell you will.
You can tell Andrew Bailey that he can go to hell.
Just get off my land.
Sorry.
Mom's not home.
Oh, 'cause I saw the Kia in the driveway.
No.
It's just, um, uh, I left some notes from an interview in there, I think.
You took notes? I've been known to take notes.
I'm just kidding.
Come on in.
Uh, yeah, mom said she found something in her car that she thought might be yours.
Huh.
Yeah.
So, uh - Where is your mom? - She went running, so Running? From what? - Um I didn't know she ran.
- Uh, yeah.
She went with a friend.
They used to run together.
- A friend? - Yeah.
Some lady she used to work with.
- Right.
Well, that's nice for your mom.
- Yeah.
How, uh -- h-how are you? What do you mean? Well, you know, how -- how are you feeling? I'd be even better if people stopped asking me how I was feeling.
Got it.
Well, this doesn't really look like notes.
More like a half-off pitcher of beer and a half-dozen oysters coupon for Smiling Jimmys.
- Yeah.
That actually might be mine.
- Yeah, probably.
Andrew, what's up? Detective, Shelby's here at my place! She's going crazy! All right.
I'll be right there.
All right.
Sorry.
I'll -- I'll ask mom.
Maybe she's seen it.
- Seen what? - Oh, right.
The notes.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Okay, cool.
- All right, later.
- Later.
Hey, Shelby, do not light that.
Okay, look, I'm sorry for all the things I said about you.
No, no, no, stop! You're losing it, you crazy bitch! Shelby, Shelby, do not do it.
Shelby, just take that rag off.
- Hey, Shelby, Shelby, don't.
- No, no, no, no, no! Don't do it.
- What did you do, you crazy bitch?! - Call the fire department.
What the Yeah I have an emergency.
My, uh, bar is on fire.
Watch your head.
- Daniel.
- Detective.
Here.
Make sure that gets back to the evidence lab.
- Why? To test for accelerant? - Well, it's probably moonshine, but -- you know what? Just test it.
Uhone more thing.
Andrew Bailey called me on this cellphone number.
Find out everything you can about it.
- You got it? - I got it.
- You got it? - I'm getting it.
Good.
Who says I don't have a way with animals? Let's see what Shelby's hiding.
Cracked corn and Mason jars -- two things used to make moonshine.
There's no still.
There's one here.
This place certainly looks like it can be an illegal nip house Not that I've ever been in one.
No.
Also a good place to murder a cheating ex-husband.
She could have shot Gordon here and then dragged him down to the water there.
Yeah, but a bullet to the head -- there would be a lot of blood.
Yeah.
Give me a hand.
Something tells me that stain's not from whiskey.
- Someone's definitely bled out here.
- And Shelby tried to hide it.
I can run a Teichmann test on the hemoglobin.
Let's see if it's Gordon.
Hey, Jim, it's, uh, Callie.
Um, Jeff told me that you came by last night.
Um, I looked in the Kia, didn't find any notes.
Uhit sounded kind of important, so I hope you find them or you found them.
Uh, anyway, I'll talk to you later.
Okay, bye.
Hey.
Hey.
I'm sorry, but I just completely mauled your civil liberties, and took a look at your floor schedule.
I was thinking, since you aren't working later, maybe we can grab some dinner or something.
Yeah.
Um, I would love to.
But I was actually thinking about picking up another shift.
Were you actually thinking about it, or are you actually going to pick up another shift? - I - Look, Callie, I just -- I just really think that we need to get together and talk.
Yeah.
No, I do, too.
Umyou know, it's just work and things.
Sure.
Uh, how's Jennifer? Uh, Jennifer's fine.
Uh, still loving Scottsdale.
I'm still not married to her, which actually would be illegal, since she just got remarried, so I-I didn't know.
Callie, this doesn't have to be weird.
I think we should just get together and catch up.
That's all.
I think you're right, yeah.
Absolutely.
- Great.
Then I'll put something together.
- Okay.
- All right.
I'll see you.
- Okay.
- Bye.
- Bye.
Manus told me to tell you Shelby posted bail for the attempted arson charge.
- What about the bloodstain? Can we hold her for Gordon's murder? That much blood probably is from a murder -- just not Gordon's.
Turns out the blood is between I think it might be from a relative of one of the people in this photo, one of the Mackays.
And Shelby's maiden name is Mackay, and the Mackays are a legendary moonshine family in Florida, best known for making this.
- Lightning Queen? - Mm-hmm.
Premium moonshine.
It's the Coca-Cola of hooch.
Recipe's been in the Mackay family since way before prohibition, when you didn't need to be a licensed distillery and moonshine was legal.
Didn't hit on this at first because we were working off Shelby Adams, not Shelby Mackay, not to mention the last time a Mackay was caught making moonshine was 1975.
So the Mackays didn't stop making moonshine.
They just stopped getting caught.
Same goes for their biggest rival, the Fords, as in Frank Ford.
Conveniently, Frank didn't mention his history with Shelby.
Especially since their families are like the Hatfields and the McCoys.
Huh.
It all started when Frank Ford's great-great-grandfather was killed during a moonshine explosion.
According to a local legend, the Fords suspected the Mackays of tampering with their still.
There's been bad blood between these two families for decades.
And bad blood between Gordon and Frank over the last two weeks.
- So Frank murdered Gordon after all? - Were is Frank? Oh, we had to release his glass-bottom boat.
He said he had chartered cruises.
My guess is that he's doing what the Mackays and the Fords do best -- making moonshine.
For that, he needs water and plenty of space.
Frank has both.
He owns all the land where he moors his boats.
This is Frank's boat, but all those gas tanks are gone.
Found a bunch of empty hundred-pound bags of cracked corn and wheat -- that's a lot of moonshine.
He's making it somewhere.
My guess is out there.
- Vámanos.
- Yes, let's.
Phew! These things are massive.
There's the boiler and the thumper.
It looks like there were five flake stands.
Huh.
Frank could have easily made 5,000 gallons of moonshine with this still.
You know these things are still warm? He must have just made a batch.
It looks like somebody wasn't too happy about that.
And we just missed them.
All this overgrowth is matted down, and these branches are all broken.
There's dry blood on these leaves, too.
You know, Gordon must have been shot here, dragged down to the water there.
Which means Yeah.
Shell casing.
Here.
Nine-millimeter.
I'll get this back to the lab.
So either our investigation has Frank destroying his own still to cover his tracks, or someone else busted it up.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
What are you doing? - I'm going after him.
- Not with me in the car you're not.
Just stop complaining like a little girl and do something useful, like call for backup.
- Uh, backup, backup.
- You don't just say, "backup"! You say who we are, who we're chasing.
Did you get your badge out of a cereal packet? Come on, man.
What do you say? I'm a coroner.
I'm not a detective.
You know what? I'm trying to concentrate on driving right now.
Yeah.
We're on a pursuit.
We're -- we're -- it's a blue car.
We got you, 20.
Two units on the way.
This is where you exit the vehicle, Frank.
Hope you're not waiting for me to get the door for you.
I was able to get a sample of the moonshine from Frank's still and compare it to the moonshine Shelby used to set Andrew's bar on fire.
- They're both the same.
- Huh? Yeah.
Why else would Shelby destroy Frank's still unless she found out he had stolen the family recipe of Lightning Queen? Yeah, but that recipe has been in the Mackay family for generations.
How did Frank Ford get his hands on it? Maybe he got his hands on the guy who married into it.
Gordon? Why would he betray his wife like that? Oh, he's betraying her for sleeping around.
Yeah, well, that's different.
If you tell Marisol I said that, I'll deny it.
Gordon was motivated by cold, hard cash.
pedigree, illegal moonshine like Lightning Queen can sell for $1.
2 million.
Yeah, but Gordon knew that Shelby would only make small batches to sell to her local customers on the cheap.
So Gordon went behind Shelby's back, gave Frank the recipe for Lightning Queen.
But then his conscience got the better of him.
He realized he'd made a mistake, tried to get Frank to stop making Lightning Queen.
Frank refused, and so he assaulted him.
So once Frank knew the recipe for Lightning Queen, he didn't need Gordon anymore, so Frank killed Gordon? Hmm.
Maybe.
Yes, Gordon told me that he gave Frank Ford the recipe for Lightning Queen.
Gordon betrayed you, and he betrayed the Mackay family.
- But I didn't kill him.
- Because you loved him.
- Gordon loved me, too.
- Hmm.
Seems like it.
He did.
Got tired of hearing Frank Ford say what devils we Mackays were.
He was trying to stick up for me.
'Cause he promised he'd change? He did.
He changed.
He stopped drinking.
He was trying to give our marriage a real shot.
Well, a couple shots of whiskey anyway, and a shot in the head.
You know he was pickled drunk when he was killed, Shelby? People make mistakes, all right, but Gordon loved me.
I don't know why you can't see that.
You ever been in love, Detective? I'm talking head over heels, knots in your stomach, whole body aches kind of love? Yeah, you know what, I'm not buying the whole "Love conquers all" defense, Shelby.
- So what happens now? - Now I go and find Frank.
But until I do, you're not going anywhere.
Detective, here are the records from that phone number Andrew called you on.
Good.
I'm gonna need that file on Frank Ford, as well.
There's a partial print on a nine-millimeter shell casing that's being analyzed now.
Think that might be the nail in the coffin for Shelby.
Or Frank.
I mean, they both look good for it, and we are dealing with hillbilly justice.
It's in Frank's DNA to want to screw over Shelby just because she's a Mackay, and everyone knows that Shelby hates those booze cruises.
So what does Frank do? Make sure he runs booze cruises to Andrew's bar next door.
Yeah.
I guess the ultimate screw you to Shelby would be to sell the Mackay family moonshine.
And Frank wouldn't let a little thing like Gordon's guilt get in the way.
So you think Frank is out there, bootlegging Lightning Queen out of his car? Well, not 500 gallons of it.
I think he's rum-running it in his boat.
All the evidence we collected on Frank Ford.
Aha.
I mean, we could notify the Coast Guard and get a BOLO out there, but Frank could be in the middle of the Atlantic by now.
Not if he wants to sell that Lightning Queen.
And, also, the subpoena you requested just came in.
Excellent.
Welcome.
Hey.
Callie.
Oh.
No, sorry.
After you.
- I just need her for a quick second.
- Sure.
So, I was wondering if we were still good for tonight? - Uh, yeah.
Sure, we're good.
- Great.
I'll shoot you an e-mail with all the info.
- I went with Italian, if that's okay.
- Italian's great.
Great.
I know how much you love Italian, so -- Yeah.
Well, uh, she's all yours.
- Thank you.
- Okay.
That's just a work thing.
Okay.
Uh, well, so is this -- uh, the subpoena.
Great.
Thanks.
Um, these are Gordon's first treatments.
Uh, four times admitted to E.
R.
in the first year he was living here.
Yeah.
Alcohol poisoning, blackouts.
Gordon was a regular.
He was flagged for alcohol dependence and then asked if he wanted to be part of a study on reversing the side effects of hepatorenal syndrome.
Uh, kidney dysfunction.
- Very good! - Thank you.
But Gordon declined to be part of the study.
Well, yeah, of course.
They would have wanted him to stop drinking.
Right, and then a few weeks later, Gordon walks in, all on his own, and asks if there's still space in the study, signs a participant agreement.
But he kept drinking.
Right, but he also signed an abstinence agreement, so I think that he meant to.
Honestly, if you ask me, the only reason why people make huge lifestyle changes like that are for loved ones.
So maybe Shelby was right.
Gordon was in love with her.
Daniel.
Great.
Send me the GPS coordinates on my phone.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
How did you find me? Simple math, took the amount of gas you could have on the boat minus the distance it took you to get to a gas station before you ran out, equals me arresting you here.
Arresting me for what this time? If all these tanks are filled with gas, why did you stop? I was just about to fill them up.
What, are they empty? Yeah.
That's why I stopped.
Sure about that, Frank? Yeah.
Good.
No, no, no, no! You knew the real money was in illegal moonshine, didn't you? And what, with the Lightning Queen being the best hooch going around, you stole the recipe from Shelby.
- I didn't steal it.
Okay, sorry.
You got Gordon to steal the recipe from Shelby for you.
You can't prove that.
Are you saying that the hooch I just tasted out of your tanks wasn't the Lightning Queen? All right, then what was it? Was it, uh Blue John, Radiator, Stump Hole? Yeah.
Got this list from your boat, Frank.
First I thought it was just the names of different types of moonshines, but now I know that they're bars on the Intercoastal Waterway, places where you had a deal to sell Lightning Queen.
You're rum-running.
Okay, so I'm rum-running.
But I didn't kill Gordon.
I swear I didn't.
Okay, but according to this text, maybe you didn't, but I think we both have an idea who did, don't we? Radiator, Blue John -- these are all bars.
So what? I'm a bar owner.
I know other bars.
Big deal.
Yeah, but selling Lightning Queen was a big deal, right? You had the contacts.
Frank had the boat.
But you needed that recipe.
I mean, Shelby -- she hated you the first time she set eyes on you, right? So you needed someone to win her over.
That's why you called Gordon.
Believe me, I had nothing to do with Gordon marrying Shelby.
Wait.
What is this? They're phone records from the cell that you called me the night that Shelby tried to burn the bar down.
Turns out you've been in contact for a full four months with Gordon before he even came down here.
Yeah.
Gordon came into town.
He was visiting.
He wanted to check out Florida before he moved here.
I gave him my number, said we should talk.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
You had his cell number from the time you were treasurer at Delta Mu Phi.
Isn't that the fraternity that you and Gordon joined while you were at Tulane together? And where Gordon had a reputation of bedding any coed that he wanted, which fit pretty well into your plans, wanting to make millions off the Lightning Queen so you could get old Gordo to knock boots with Shelby, get the recipe.
But one thing you hadn't counted on was that he might fall in love with her.
Gordon wasn't in love with Shelby, and that's why she killed him.
No, but he did fall in love with her.
So you got Gordon to meet you, uh, out at Frank's where you got him drunk on Rottweiler moonshine.
But you -- you still couldn't convince him to go through with the plan, could you? So you put a bullet in the back of his head.
This is crazy, man.
I-I don't know anything about the Lightning Queen or a 5,000-gallon still.
I-I've never even seen it.
Really? 'Cause we found a shell casing there by the still.
Had a partial print on it -- well, that's partially true.
It wasn't really a partial print.
It was a full print.
It was your full print.
Oh, hey.
Hey, hey, hey.
Don't look so glum.
Hey, just think what being arrested for murder will do to drive up sales, huh? Attaboy.
It's okay, everyone.
I'm pretty sure the drinks are on the house.
When Gordon came in for the study, he was tested, and he was clean, so we know he was making an effort.
He really did love you.
Thank you.
It means a lot to hear that.
So, what can I get you folks? So, this is the kind of place that I think it is right? It is.
Thought you'd like to try some honest-to-goodness moonshine.
And what makes you think that I haven't? Good point.
Uh, there are different types of liquor -- uh, sippin', spittin', and sellin'.
There's also courtin' and kissin' and -- and what about the leavin' kind? I was gonna say loving.
Sorry.
Maybe some other time.
Oh, you got that work thing? - Yeah.
- Right.
Oh.
Um, okay.
- Okay.
- Well So I'm drinking alone, huh? Mm-hmm.
Bottoms up.
Call Daniel and get you a ride home, okay? Will do.
I'm so sorry I'm late.
I had this thing.
Really, it's all right.
I'm good.
And I am way underdressed.
Thank you.
You look fantastic.
- Thank you.
- Sure.
I'm just glad that we got a chance to actually talk outside of the hospital.
I mean, it's not that half sentences and pregnant pauses weren't working for me.
But, uh, to be frank, I would be a little disappointed if it wasn't awkward.
Yeah, no.
It has beenawkward.
Um, and a little confusing.
I don't -- you know, I don't know why you're here.
I thought you loved Atlanta.
I do love Atlanta, and Atlanta General's an amazing facility.
I mean, not -- not that there's anything wrong with Palm Glade.
But to be completely honest, the only thing I miss about working here is you.
Ben Okay, just hear me out.
Okay.
Look, I-I know that what you've been going through lately has been rough, and I know that divorce, even when it's your decision, is -- is tough on everybody.
I mean, it can -- it can really wring somebody out.
There's a lot of change coming at you at once, some of which you don't even see coming.
And, uh, even though it may seem counterintuitive to -- to -- to face one big thing with -- with another big challenge, I really think -- Ben, seriously, it is great to see you, but I have so much going on in my life right now.
I'm closing the hospital down, Cal.
You're -- what? Corporate wants to shut down Palm Glade Regional.
That's what I'm doing here.
Okay, um, when? Does -- does anybody else know about this? You're the only person I've told.
And if all goes according to plan, the doors will be shut for good in about six weeks.
Okay.
And so what happens to everyone? Well, for a lot of people, it means finding a new job.
But that's what I wanted to talk to you about.
There's a job for you at Atlanta memorial.
Atlanta Memorial, in Atlanta.
Associate Director of Nursing Services.
You'd be heading up the nurses and their support staff.
It's better money.
It's better benefits.
And since it's a full teaching hospital, you get a full ride to finish up your medical degree.
A full ride? But in, like, a full ride? Yeah, as in free tuition.
I don't -- I don't -- I don't know what to say.
Well, the good news is that you don't have to say anything tonight.
Shall we?
